तथा तु विलपन्तीं तां कौसल्यां राममातरम् ।
उवाच लक्ष्मणो दीनस्तत् कालसदृशं वचः ॥१॥

1. Then, the dejected Lakṣmaṇa spoke words befitting the moment to Kausalyā, Rama's mother, who was lamenting in such a manner.
न रोचते ममाप्येतदार्ये यद् राघवो वनम् ।
त्यक्त्वा राज्यश्रियं गच्छेत् स्त्रिया वाक्यवशं गतः ॥२॥
2. na rocate mamāpyetadārye yad rāghavo vanam ,
tyaktvā rājyaśriyaṃ gacchet striyā vākyavaśaṃ gataḥ.
2. na rocate mama api etat ārye yat rāghavaḥ vanam
tyaktvā rājyaśriyam gacchet striyā vākyavaśam gataḥ

2. O noble lady, it is also not pleasing to me that Rāghava should go to the forest, abandoning the splendor of the kingdom, having fallen under the sway of a woman's words.
विपरीतश्च वृद्धश्च विषयैश्च प्रधर्षितः ।
नृपः किमिव न ब्रूयाच्चोद्यमानः समन्मथः ॥३॥
3. viparītaśca vṛddhaśca viṣayaiśca pradharṣitaḥ ,
nṛpaḥ kimiva na brūyāccodyamānaḥ samanmathaḥ.
3. viparītaḥ ca vṛddhaḥ ca viṣayaiḥ ca pradharṣitaḥ
nṛpaḥ kim iva na brūyāt codyamānaḥ samanmathaḥ

3. What would a king not say, when he is confused, aged, overpowered by sensual desires, tormented by passion, and being urged?
नास्यापराधं पश्यामि नापि दोषं तथा विधम् ।
येन निर्वास्यते राष्ट्राद्वनवासाय राघवः ॥४॥
4. nāsyāparādhaṃ paśyāmi nāpi doṣaṃ tathā vidham ,
yena nirvāsyate rāṣṭrādvanavāsāya rāghavaḥ.
4. na asya aparādham paśyāmi na api doṣam tathā
vidham yena nirvāsyate rāṣṭrāt vanavāsāya rāghavaḥ
4. aham asya aparādham tathā vidham doṣam api na
paśyāmi yena rāghavaḥ rāṣṭrāt vanavāsāya nirvāsyate
4. I do not see any offense committed by him, nor any fault of such a nature, by which Rama (Rāghava) would be exiled from the kingdom to dwell in the forest.
न तं पश्याम्यहं लोके परोक्षमपि यो नरः ।
अमित्रो ऽपि निरस्तो ऽपि यो ऽस्य दोषमुदाहरेत् ॥५॥
5. na taṃ paśyāmyahaṃ loke parokṣamapi yo naraḥ ,
amitro'pi nirasto'pi yo'sya doṣamudāharet.
5. na tam paśyāmi aham loke parokṣam api yaḥ naraḥ
amitraḥ api nirastaḥ api yaḥ asya doṣam udāharet
5. aham loke tam naram na paśyāmi yaḥ parokṣam api
amitraḥ api nirastaḥ api asya doṣam udāharet
5. I do not see any man in the world, not even indirectly, who, even if he were an enemy or rejected, would speak ill of him.
देवकल्पमृजुं दान्तं रिपूणामपि वत्सलम् ।
अवेक्षमाणः को धर्मं त्यजेत् पुत्रमकारणात् ॥६॥
6. devakalpamṛjuṃ dāntaṃ ripūṇāmapi vatsalam ,
avekṣamāṇaḥ ko dharmaṃ tyajet putramakāraṇāt.
6. deva-kalpam ṛjum dāntam ripūṇām api vatsalam
avekṣamāṇaḥ kaḥ dharmam tyajet putram akāraṇāt
6. kaḥ dharmam avekṣamāṇaḥ ripūṇām api vatsalam

6. Who, considering the natural law (dharma), would abandon a son who is god-like, honest, self-controlled, and affectionate even towards his enemies, without any cause?
तदिदं वचनं राज्ञः पुनर्बाल्यमुपेयुषः ।
पुत्रः को हृदये कुर्याद् राजवृत्तमनुस्मरन् ॥७॥
7. tadidaṃ vacanaṃ rājñaḥ punarbālyamupeyuṣaḥ ,
putraḥ ko hṛdaye kuryād rājavṛttamanusmaran.
7. tat idam vacanam rājñaḥ punaḥ bālyam upeyuṣaḥ
putraḥ kaḥ hṛdaye kuryāt rāja-vṛttam anusmaran
7. rāja-vṛttam anusmaran kaḥ putraḥ punaḥ bālyam
upeyuṣaḥ rājñaḥ tat idam vacanam hṛdaye kuryāt
7. What son, remembering the conduct (vṛtta) of kings, would accept in his heart this command of a king who has reverted to childishness?
यावदेव न जानाति कश्चिदर्थमिमं नरः ।
तावदेव मया सार्धमात्मस्थं कुरु शासनम् ॥८॥
8. yāvadeva na jānāti kaścidarthamimaṃ naraḥ ,
tāvadeva mayā sārdhamātmasthaṃ kuru śāsanam.
8. yāvat eva na jānāti kaścit artham imam naraḥ
tāvat eva mayā sārdham ātmastham kuru śāsanam
8. kascit narah imam artham yāvat eva na jānāti,
tāvat eva mayā sārdham ātmastham śāsanam kuru.
8. As long as any person does not understand this situation, so long, establish your rule (śāsana) with resolute conviction (ātman-stha) by my side.
मया पार्श्वे सधनुषा तव गुप्तस्य राघव ।
कः समर्थो ऽधिकं कर्तुं कृतान्तस्येव तिष्ठतः ॥९॥
9. mayā pārśve sadhanuṣā tava guptasya rāghava ,
kaḥ samartho'dhikaṃ kartuṃ kṛtāntasyeva tiṣṭhataḥ.
9. mayā pārśve sadhanuṣā tava guptasya rāghava kaḥ
samarthaḥ adhikam kartum kṛtāntasya iva tiṣṭhataḥ
9. rāghava,
sadhanuṣā mayā pārśve guptasya tava adhikam kartum kaḥ samarthaḥ kṛtāntasya iva tiṣṭhataḥ.
9. O Raghava, who is capable of doing more [harm] to you, who are protected by me standing at your side with a bow, just as one cannot do more [harm] to the very Lord of Death (Kṛtānta) himself when he stands?
निर्मनुष्यामिमां सर्वामयोध्यां मनुजर्षभ ।
करिष्यामि शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्यदि स्थास्यति विप्रिये ॥१०॥
10. nirmanuṣyāmimāṃ sarvāmayodhyāṃ manujarṣabha ,
kariṣyāmi śaraistīkṣṇairyadi sthāsyati vipriye.
10. nirmanuṣyām imām sarvām ayodhyām manujarṣabha
kariṣyāmi śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ yadi sthāsyati vipriye
10. manujarṣabha,
yadi vipriye sthāsyati,
imām sarvām ayodhyām tīkṣṇaiḥ śaraiḥ nirmanuṣyām kariṣyāmi.
10. O best among men, I will render this entire Ayodhya devoid of people (nirmanuṣyam) with my sharp arrows, if it persists in this adverse situation.
भरतस्याथ पक्ष्यो वा यो वास्य हितमिच्छति ।
सर्वानेतान् वधिष्यामि मृदुर्हि परिभूयते ॥११॥
11. bharatasyātha pakṣyo vā yo vāsya hitamicchati ,
sarvānetān vadhiṣyāmi mṛdurhi paribhūyate.
11. bharatasya atha pakṣyaḥ vā yaḥ vā asya hitam
icchati sarvān etān vadhiṣyāmi mṛduḥ hi paribhūyate
11. atha bharatasya pakṣyaḥ vā,
yaḥ vā asya hitam icchati,
etān sarvān vadhiṣyāmi,
hi mṛduḥ paribhūyate.
11. I will kill all those who are partisans of Bharata or who desire his welfare, for a gentle person is indeed easily subdued.
त्वया चैव मया चैव कृत्वा वैरमनुत्तमम् ।
कस्य शक्तिः श्रियं दातुं भरतायारिशासन ॥१२॥
12. tvayā caiva mayā caiva kṛtvā vairamanuttamam ,
kasya śaktiḥ śriyaṃ dātuṃ bharatāyāriśāsana.
12. tvayā ca eva mayā ca eva kṛtvā vairam anuttamam
kasya śaktiḥ śriyam dātum bharatāya ariśāsana
12. ariśāsana tvayā ca eva mayā ca eva anuttamam
vairam kṛtvā bharatāya śriyam dātum kasya śaktiḥ
12. Indeed, after you and I have created unparalleled enmity, who possesses the power (śakti) to bestow prosperity (śrī) upon Bharata, O subduer of foes?
अनुरक्तो ऽस्मि भावेन भ्रातरं देवि तत्त्वतः ।
सत्येन धनुषा चैव दत्तेनेष्टेन ते शपे ॥१३॥
13. anurakto'smi bhāvena bhrātaraṃ devi tattvataḥ ,
satyena dhanuṣā caiva datteneṣṭena te śape.
13. anuraktaḥ asmi bhāvena bhrātaram devi tattvataḥ
satyena dhanuṣā ca eva dattena iṣṭena te śape
13. devi asmi tattvataḥ bhāvena bhrātaram anuraktaḥ
te satyena dhanuṣā ca eva dattena iṣṭena śape
13. O goddess, I am truly devoted to my brother with genuine affection. I swear to you by truth, by my bow, and by what has been given (dāna) and by what has been ritually offered.
दीप्तमग्निमरण्यं वा यदि रामः प्रवेक्ष्यते ।
प्रविष्टं तत्र मां देवि त्वं पूर्वमवधारय ॥१४॥
14. dīptamagnimaraṇyaṃ vā yadi rāmaḥ pravekṣyate ,
praviṣṭaṃ tatra māṃ devi tvaṃ pūrvamavadhāraya.
14. dīptam agnim araṇyam vā yadi rāmaḥ pravekṣyate
praviṣṭam tatra mām devi tvam pūrvam avadhāraya
14. devi yadi rāmaḥ dīptam agnim vā araṇyam pravekṣyate
tvam mām tatra pūrvam praviṣṭam avadhāraya
14. O goddess (devī), if Rama is to enter a blazing fire or a forest, then you must consider me to have entered there first.
हरामि वीर्याद्दुःखं ते तमः सूर्य इवोदितः ।
देवी पश्यतु मे वीर्यं राघवश्चैव पश्यतु ॥१५॥
15. harāmi vīryādduḥkhaṃ te tamaḥ sūrya ivoditaḥ ,
devī paśyatu me vīryaṃ rāghavaścaiva paśyatu.
15. harāmi vīryāt duḥkham te tamaḥ sūryaḥ iva uditaḥ
devī paśyatu me vīryam rāghavaḥ ca eva paśyatu
15. uditaḥ sūryaḥ tamaḥ iva aham vīryāt te duḥkham harāmi
devī me vīryam paśyatu rāghavaḥ ca eva paśyatu
15. I remove your sorrow by my valor, just as the risen sun removes darkness. Let the goddess (devī) see my valor, and let Rāghava (Rama) also see it.
एतत्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणस्य महात्मनः ।
उवाच रामं कौसल्या रुदन्ती शोकलालसा ॥१६॥
16. etattu vacanaṃ śrutvā lakṣmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ ,
uvāca rāmaṃ kausalyā rudantī śokalālasā.
16. etat tu vacanam śrutvā lakṣmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ
uvāca rāmam kausalyā rudantī śokalālasā
16. kausalyā rudantī śokalālasā mahātmanaḥ
lakṣmaṇasya etat vacanam śrutvā rāmam uvāca
16. Having heard these words of the great-souled (mahātman) Lakshmana, Kausalya, weeping and overcome with sorrow, spoke to Rama.
भ्रातुस्ते वदतः पुत्र लक्ष्मणस्य श्रुतं त्वया ।
यदत्रानन्तरं तत्त्वं कुरुष्व यदि रोचते ॥१७॥
17. bhrātuste vadataḥ putra lakṣmaṇasya śrutaṃ tvayā ,
yadatrānantaraṃ tattvaṃ kuruṣva yadi rocate.
17. bhrātuḥ te vadataḥ putra lakṣmaṇasya śrutam tvayā
yat atra anantaram tattvam kuruṣva yadi rocate
17. putra tvayā te bhrātuḥ lakṣmaṇasya vadataḥ śrutam
yat atra anantaram tattvam yadi rocate kuruṣva
17. O son, you have heard your brother Lakshmana speaking. If it pleases you, then take whatever proper course of action is appropriate here.
न चाधर्म्यं वचः श्रुत्वा सपत्न्या मम भाषितम् ।
विहाय शोकसंतप्तां गन्तुमर्हसि मामितः ॥१८॥
18. na cādharmyaṃ vacaḥ śrutvā sapatnyā mama bhāṣitam ,
vihāya śokasaṃtaptāṃ gantumarhasi māmitaḥ.
18. na ca adharmyam vacaḥ śrutvā sapatnyā mama bhāṣitam
vihāya śokasaṃtaptām gantum arhasi mām itaḥ
18. ca tvam mama sapatnyā bhāṣitam adharmyam vacaḥ śrutvā
śokasaṃtaptām mām vihāya itaḥ gantum na arhasi
18. Moreover, having heard the unrighteous (adharma) words spoken by my co-wife, you ought not to leave me, who is scorched by sorrow, and depart from here.
धर्मज्ञ यदि धर्मिष्ठो धर्मं चरितुमिच्छसि ।
शुश्रूष मामिहस्थस्त्वं चर धर्ममनुत्तमम् ॥१९॥
19. dharmajña yadi dharmiṣṭho dharmaṃ caritumicchasi ,
śuśrūṣa māmihasthastvaṃ cara dharmamanuttamam.
19. dharmajña yadi dharmiṣṭhaḥ dharmam caritum icchasi
śuśrūṣa mām ihasthaḥ tvam cara dharmam anuttamam
19. dharmajña yadi tvam dharmiṣṭhaḥ dharmam caritum icchasi
tadā ihasthaḥ tvam mām śuśrūṣa ca anuttamam dharmam cara
19. O knower of what is right (dharma)! If you, being most righteous, wish to practice your duty, then you, staying right here, should serve me and practice the supreme duty (dharma).
शुश्रूषुर्जननीं पुत्र स्वगृहे नियतो वसन् ।
परेण तपसा युक्तः काश्यपस्त्रिदिवं गतः ॥२०॥
20. śuśrūṣurjananīṃ putra svagṛhe niyato vasan ,
pareṇa tapasā yuktaḥ kāśyapastridivaṃ gataḥ.
20. śuśrūṣuḥ jananīm putra svagṛhe niyataḥ vasan
pareṇa tapasā yuktaḥ kāśyapaḥ tridivam gataḥ
20. putra kāśyapaḥ jananīm śuśrūṣuḥ svagṛhe niyataḥ
vasan pareṇa tapasā yuktaḥ tridivam gataḥ
20. O son, a descendant of Kaśyapa, diligently serving his mother and residing in his own home, endowed with supreme austerity (tapas), went to heaven.
यथैव राजा पूज्यस्ते गौरवेण तथा ह्यहम् ।
त्वां नाहमनुजानामि न गन्तव्यमितो वनम् ॥२१॥
21. yathaiva rājā pūjyaste gauraveṇa tathā hyaham ,
tvāṃ nāhamanujānāmi na gantavyamito vanam.
21. yathā eva rājā pūjyaḥ te gauraveṇa tathā hi aham
tvām na aham anujānāmi na gantavyam itaḥ vanam
21. yathā eva rājā gauraveṇa te pūjyaḥ tathā hi aham
aham tvām na anujānāmi itaḥ vanam na gantavyam
21. Just as the king is to be honored by you with reverence, so too should I be. I do not permit you; the forest should not be gone to from here.
त्वद्वियोगान्न मे कार्यं जीवितेन सुखेन वा ।
त्वया सह मम श्रेयस्तृणानामपि भक्षणम् ॥२२॥
22. tvadviyogānna me kāryaṃ jīvitena sukhena vā ,
tvayā saha mama śreyastṛṇānāmapi bhakṣaṇam.
22. tvat viyogāt na me kāryam jīvitena sukhena vā
tvayā saha mama śreyaḥ tṛṇānām api bhakṣaṇam
22. tvat viyogāt me jīvitena vā sukhena kāryam na
tvayā saha tṛṇānām api bhakṣaṇam mama śreyaḥ
22. Because of separation from you, I have no need for life or happiness. For me, even eating grass in your company is better.
यदि त्वं यास्यसि वनं त्यक्त्वा मां शोकलालसाम् ।
अहं प्रायमिहासिष्ये न हि शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥२३॥
23. yadi tvaṃ yāsyasi vanaṃ tyaktvā māṃ śokalālasām ,
ahaṃ prāyamihāsiṣye na hi śakṣyāmi jīvitum.
23. yadi tvam yāsyasi vanam tyaktvā mām śokalālasām
aham prāyam iha āsiṣye na hi śakṣyāmi jīvitum
23. yadi tvam mām śokalālasām tyaktvā vanam yāsyasi
aham iha prāyam āsiṣye hi na jīvitum śakṣyāmi
23. If you go to the forest, abandoning me who is overwhelmed with grief, I will sit down for a fast to death here, for I will surely not be able to live.
ततस्त्वं प्राप्स्यसे पुत्र निरयं लोकविश्रुतम् ।
ब्रह्महत्यामिवाधर्मात् समुद्रः सरितां पतिः ॥२४॥
24. tatastvaṃ prāpsyase putra nirayaṃ lokaviśrutam ,
brahmahatyāmivādharmāt samudraḥ saritāṃ patiḥ.
24. tataḥ tvam prāpsyase putra nirayam lokaviśrutam
brahmahatyām iva adharmāt samudraḥ saritām patiḥ
24. putra tataḥ tvam lokaviśrutam nirayam prāpsyase
adharmāt brahmahatyām iva samudraḥ saritām patiḥ
24. Then, O son, you will obtain a hell widely known, stemming from your unrighteousness (adharma) and comparable to the sin of brahminicide. This will be as inevitable as the ocean being the lord of all rivers.
विलपन्तीं तथा दीनां कौसल्यां जननीं ततः ।
उवाच रामो धर्मात्मा वचनं धर्मसंहितम् ॥२५॥
25. vilapantīṃ tathā dīnāṃ kausalyāṃ jananīṃ tataḥ ,
uvāca rāmo dharmātmā vacanaṃ dharmasaṃhitam.
25. vilapantīm tathā dīnām kausalyām jananīm tataḥ
uvāca rāmaḥ dharmātmā vacanam dharmasaṃhitam
25. tataḥ dharmātmā rāmaḥ vilapantīm tathā dīnām
jananīm kausalyām dharmasaṃhitam vacanam uvāca
25. Then, the righteous-souled (dharmātman) Rama spoke words imbued with (dharma) to his mother Kaushalya, who was lamenting and distressed.
नास्ति शक्तिः पितुर्वाक्यं समतिक्रमितुं मम ।
प्रसादये त्वां शिरसा गन्तुमिच्छाम्यहं वनम् ॥२६॥
26. nāsti śaktiḥ piturvākyaṃ samatikramituṃ mama ,
prasādaye tvāṃ śirasā gantumicchāmyahaṃ vanam.
26. na asti śaktiḥ pituḥ vākyam samatikramitum mama
prasādaye tvām śirasā gantum icchāmi aham vanam
26. mama pituḥ vākyam samatikramitum śaktiḥ na asti
śirasā tvām prasādaye aham vanam gantum icchāmi
26. I do not possess the ability (śakti) to transgress my father's command. I implore you by bowing my head; I desire to go to the forest.
ऋषिणा च पितुर्वाक्यं कुर्वता व्रतचारिणा ।
गौर्हता जानता धर्मं कण्डुनापि विपश्चिता ॥२७॥
27. ṛṣiṇā ca piturvākyaṃ kurvatā vratacāriṇā ,
gaurhatā jānatā dharmaṃ kaṇḍunāpi vipaścitā.
27. ṛṣiṇā ca pituḥ vākyam kurvatā vratacāriṇā gauḥ
hatā jānatā dharmam kaṇḍunā api vipaścitā
27. ca ṛṣiṇā vratacāriṇā vipaścitā kaṇḍunā api
pituḥ vākyam kurvatā dharmam jānatā gauḥ hatā
27. And by the sage Kaṇḍu, who was wise (vipaścit) and observed his vows (vratacārin), a cow was killed while he was carrying out his father's command, even though he knew (dharma).
अस्माकं च कुले पूर्वं सगरस्याज्ञया पितुः ।
खनद्भिः सागरैर्भूतिमवाप्तः सुमहान् वधः ॥२८॥
28. asmākaṃ ca kule pūrvaṃ sagarasyājñayā pituḥ ,
khanadbhiḥ sāgarairbhūtimavāptaḥ sumahān vadhaḥ.
28. asmākam ca kule pūrvam sagarasya ājñayā pituḥ
khanadbhiḥ sāgaraiḥ bhūtim avāptaḥ sumahān vadhaḥ
28. pūrvam asmākam kule ca pituḥ sagarasya ājñayā
khanadbhiḥ sāgaraiḥ sumahān vadhaḥ bhūtim avāptaḥ
28. And previously, in our lineage, a very great destruction occurred, caused by the sons of Sagara who were digging at the command of their father Sagara.
जामदग्न्येन रामेण रेणुका जननी स्वयम् ।
कृत्ता परशुनारण्ये पितुर्वचनकारिणा ॥२९॥
29. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa reṇukā jananī svayam ,
kṛttā paraśunāraṇye piturvacanakāriṇā.
29. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa reṇukā jananī svayam
kṛttā paraśunā araṇye pituḥ vacanakāriṇā
29. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa pituḥ vacanakāriṇā
svayam jananī reṇukā araṇye paraśunā kṛttā
29. Renuka, his own mother, was killed by Rama, the son of Jamadagni, in the forest with an axe, as he was obedient to his father's command.
न खल्वेतन्मयैकेन क्रियते पितृशासनम् ।
पूर्वैरयमभिप्रेतो गतो मार्गो ऽनुगम्यते ॥३०॥
30. na khalvetanmayaikena kriyate pitṛśāsanam ,
pūrvairayamabhipreto gato mārgo'nugamyate.
30. na khalu etat mayā ekena kriyate pitṛśāsanam
pūrvaiḥ ayam abhipretaḥ gataḥ mārgaḥ anugamyate
30. khalu etat pitṛśāsanam mayā ekena na kriyate
pūrvaiḥ abhipretaḥ gataḥ ayam mārgaḥ anugamyate
30. Indeed, this command of the father (pitṛśāsanam) is not being carried out by me alone. This path, which was desired and followed by previous generations, is (now) being pursued.
तदेतत्तु मया कार्यं क्रियते भुवि नान्यथा ।
पितुर्हि वचनं कुर्वन्न कश्चिन्नाम हीयते ॥३१॥
31. tadetattu mayā kāryaṃ kriyate bhuvi nānyathā ,
piturhi vacanaṃ kurvanna kaścinnāma hīyate.
31. tat etat tu mayā kāryam kriyate bhuvi na anyathā
pituḥ hi vacanam kurvan na kaścit nāma hīyate
31. tat etat kāryam tu mayā bhuvi na anyathā kriyate
hi pituḥ vacanam kurvan kaścit nāma na hīyate
31. Therefore, this task is indeed being carried out by me on earth, and not in any other way. For, truly, no one who performs the word (command) of their father is ever diminished or suffers loss.
तामेवमुक्त्वा जननीं लक्ष्मणं पुनरब्रवीत् ।
तव लक्ष्मण जानामि मयि स्नेहमनुत्तमम् ।
अभिप्रायमविज्ञाय सत्यस्य च शमस्य च ॥३२॥
32. tāmevamuktvā jananīṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ punarabravīt ,
tava lakṣmaṇa jānāmi mayi snehamanuttamam ,
abhiprāyamavijñāya satyasya ca śamasya ca.
32. tām evam uktvā jananīm lakṣmaṇam
punaḥ abravīt tava lakṣmaṇa jānāmi
mayi sneham anuttamam abhiprāyam
avijñāya satyasya ca śamasya ca
32. tām jananīm evam uktvā punaḥ
lakṣmaṇam abravīt lakṣmaṇa tava mayi
anuttamam sneham jānāmi satyasya
ca śamasya ca abhiprāyam avijñāya
32. Having thus spoken to his mother, he spoke again to Lakshmana: "O Lakshmana, I know your unparalleled affection for me. (But you spoke) without understanding the true intention (abhiprāyam) of truth (satya) and peace (śama)."
धर्मो हि परमो लोके धर्मे सत्यं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
धर्मसंश्रितमेतच्च पितुर्वचनमुत्तमम् ॥३३॥
33. dharmo hi paramo loke dharme satyaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ,
dharmasaṃśritametacca piturvacanamuttamam.
33. dharmaḥ hi paramaḥ loke dharme satyam pratiṣṭhitam
dharmasaṃśritam etat ca pituḥ vacanam uttamam
33. hi loke dharmaḥ paramaḥ dharme satyam pratiṣṭhitam
ca etat pituḥ uttamam vacanam dharmasaṃśritam
33. Indeed, natural law (dharma) is supreme in the world; truth (satya) is founded upon natural law (dharma). Moreover, this excellent instruction of the father is also firmly based on natural law (dharma).
संश्रुत्य च पितुर्वाक्यं मातुर्वा ब्राह्मणस्य वा ।
न कर्तव्यं वृथा वीर धर्ममाश्रित्य तिष्ठता ॥३४॥
34. saṃśrutya ca piturvākyaṃ māturvā brāhmaṇasya vā ,
na kartavyaṃ vṛthā vīra dharmamāśritya tiṣṭhatā.
34. saṃśrutya ca pituḥ vākyam mātuḥ vā brāhmaṇasya vā
na kartavyam vṛthā vīra dharmam āśritya tiṣṭhatā
34. ca pituḥ vā mātuḥ vā brāhmaṇasya vā vākyam saṃśrutya
vīra dharmam āśritya tiṣṭhatā vṛthā na kartavyam
34. And after promising to obey the word of one's father, or mother, or a Brahmin, O hero, one who abides by natural law (dharma) should not make it fruitless (by breaking that promise).
सो ऽहं न शक्ष्यामि पितुर्नियोगमतिवर्तितुम् ।
पितुर्हि वचनाद्वीर कैकेय्याहं प्रचोदितः ॥३५॥
35. so'haṃ na śakṣyāmi piturniyogamativartitum ,
piturhi vacanādvīra kaikeyyāhaṃ pracoditaḥ.
35. saḥ aham na śakṣyāmi pituḥ niyogam ativartitum
pituḥ hi vacanāt vīra kaikeyīyā aham pracoditaḥ
35. saḥ aham pituḥ niyogam ativartitum na śakṣyāmi
hi vīra aham pituḥ vacanāt kaikeyīyā pracoditaḥ
35. Therefore, I will not be able to transgress my father's command. For, O hero, it is by my father's word (vacana) that I have been impelled by Kaikeyi.
तदेनां विसृजानार्यां क्षत्रधर्माश्रितां मतिम् ।
धर्ममाश्रय मा तैक्ष्ण्यं मद्बुद्धिरनुगम्यताम् ॥३६॥
36. tadenāṃ visṛjānāryāṃ kṣatradharmāśritāṃ matim ,
dharmamāśraya mā taikṣṇyaṃ madbuddhiranugamyatām.
36. tad enām visṛja anāryām kṣatradharmāśritām matim |
dharmam āśraya mā taikṣṇyam madbuddhiḥ anugamyatām
36. tad enām kṣatradharmāśritām anāryām matim visṛja
dharmam āśraya taikṣṇyam mā madbuddhiḥ anugamyatām
36. Therefore, abandon this ignoble thought (mati) that is based on the natural law (dharma) of a warrior. Embrace true natural law (dharma); do not resort to harshness. Let my intellect guide you.
तमेवमुक्त्वा सौहार्दाद्भ्रातरं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
उवाच भूयः कौसल्यां प्राञ्जलिः शिरसानतः ॥३७॥
37. tamevamuktvā sauhārdādbhrātaraṃ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ,
uvāca bhūyaḥ kausalyāṃ prāñjaliḥ śirasānataḥ.
37. tam evam uktvā sauhārdāt bhrātaram lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ
| uvāca bhūyaḥ kausalyām prāñjaliḥ śirasā anataḥ
37. lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ tam bhrātaram evam sauhārdāt uktvā
bhūyaḥ kausalyām uvāca (saḥ) prāñjaliḥ śirasā anataḥ
37. Having thus spoken to his brother (Bharata) out of affection, Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama) then spoke again to Kausalya, his head bowed and hands folded in reverence.
अनुमन्यस्व मां देवि गमिष्यन्तमितो वनम् ।
शापितासि मम प्राणैः कुरु स्वस्त्ययनानि मे ।
तीर्णप्रतिज्ञश्च वनात् पुनरेष्याम्यहं पुरीम् ॥३८॥
38. anumanyasva māṃ devi gamiṣyantamito vanam ,
śāpitāsi mama prāṇaiḥ kuru svastyayanāni me ,
tīrṇapratijñaśca vanāt punareṣyāmyahaṃ purīm.
38. anumanyasva mām devi gamiṣyantam itaḥ
vanam | śāpitā asi mama prāṇaiḥ
kuru svastyayanāni me | tīrṇapratijñaḥ
ca vanāt punaḥ eṣyāmi aham purīm
38. devi itaḥ vanam gamiṣyantam mām
anumanyasva mama prāṇaiḥ śāpitā asi
me svastyayanāni kuru ca tīrṇapratijñaḥ
aham vanāt punaḥ purīm eṣyāmi
38. O Goddess, permit me, who is departing from here for the forest. I enjoin you by my life (prāṇa) to perform auspicious rites for me. And having fulfilled my vow, I shall return from the forest to the city.
यशो ह्यहं केवलराज्यकारणान्न पृष्ठतः कर्तुमलं महोदयम् ।
अदीर्घकाले न तु देवि जीविते वृणे ऽवरामद्य महीमधर्मतः ॥३९॥
39. yaśo hyahaṃ kevalarājyakāraṇānna pṛṣṭhataḥ kartumalaṃ mahodayam ,
adīrghakāle na tu devi jīvite vṛṇe'varāmadya mahīmadharmataḥ.
39. yaśaḥ hi aham kevalarājyakāraṇāt
na pṛṣṭhataḥ kartum alam mahodayam
| adīrghakāle na tu devi jīvite
vṛṇe avarām adya mahīm adharmataḥ
39. devi hi aham kevalarājyakāraṇāt
mahodayam yaśaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ kartum
na alam tu adīrghakāle jīvite
adya adharmataḥ avarām mahīm na vṛṇe
39. Indeed, I am not capable of abandoning great glory (yaśaḥ) for the sake of mere kingship. But, O Goddess, I will not choose an inferior kingdom today through unrighteousness (adharma) in this short life (jīvita).
प्रसादयन्नरवृषभः स मातरं पराक्रमाज्जिगमिषुरेव दण्डकान् ।
अथानुजं भृशमनुशास्य दर्शनं चकार तां हृदि जननीं प्रदक्षिणम् ॥४०॥
40. prasādayannaravṛṣabhaḥ sa mātaraṃ parākramājjigamiṣureva daṇḍakān ,
athānujaṃ bhṛśamanuśāsya darśanaṃ cakāra tāṃ hṛdi jananīṃ pradakṣiṇam.
40. prasādayan naravṛṣabhaḥ saḥ mātaram
parākramāt jigamiṣuḥ eva daṇḍakān
atha anujam bhṛśam anuśāsya darśanam
cakāra tām hṛdi jananīm pradakṣiṇam
40. saḥ naravṛṣabhaḥ mātaram prasādayan
parākramāt daṇḍakān jigamiṣuḥ eva
atha anujam bhṛśam anuśāsya tām
jananīm hṛdi darśanam pradakṣiṇam cakāra
40. He, the foremost among men, while appeasing his mother and being resolute in his desire to go to the Daṇḍaka forest with courage, then, after thoroughly instructing his younger brother, mentally circumambulated his mother (as a mark of respect) in his heart.
