एवमुक्ता वसिष्ठेन शबला शत्रुसूदन ।
विदधे कामधुक्कामान्यस्य यस्य यथेप्सितम् ॥१॥
1. evamuktā vasiṣṭhena śabalā śatrusūdana ,

1. O destroyer of enemies (śatrusūdana), Śabalā, the wish-fulfilling cow (Kāmadhuk), thus spoken to by Vasiṣṭha, fulfilled whatever desires each person had wished for.
इक्षून्मधूंस्तथा लाजान्मैरेयांश्च वरासवान् ।
पानानि च महार्हाणि भक्ष्यांश्चोच्चावचांस्तथा ॥२॥
2. ikṣūnmadhūṃstathā lājānmaireyāṃśca varāsavān ,
pānāni ca mahārhāṇi bhakṣyāṃścoccāvacāṃstathā.

2. She produced sugarcanes, honey, and parched grain; also Maireya wines and superior distilled drinks; and costly beverages, as well as various kinds of edibles.
उष्णाढ्यस्यौदनस्यापि राशयः पर्वतोपमाः ।
मृष्टान्नानि च सूपाश्च दधिकुल्यास्तथैव च ॥३॥
3. uṣṇāḍhyasyaudanasyāpi rāśayaḥ parvatopamāḥ ,
mṛṣṭānnāni ca sūpāśca dadhikulyāstathaiva ca.
3. uṣṇāḍhyasya odanasya api rāśayaḥ parvatopamāḥ
mṛṣṭānnāni ca sūpāḥ ca dadhikulyāḥ tathā eva ca

3. Even mountains of hot, abundant rice were present. There were also delicious foods, various soups, and streams of curd.
नानास्वादुरसानां च षाडवानां तथैव च ।
भाजनानि सुपूर्णानि गौडानि च सहस्रशः ॥४॥
4. nānāsvādurasānāṃ ca ṣāḍavānāṃ tathaiva ca ,
bhājanāni supūrṇāni gauḍāni ca sahasraśaḥ.

4. There were also thousands of well-filled vessels containing various sweet and flavorful juices, rich six-flavored dishes (ṣāḍava), and sweet jaggery preparations (gauḍa).
सर्वमासीत् सुसंतुष्टं हृष्टपुष्टजनाकुलम् ।
विश्वामित्रबलं राम वसिष्ठेनाभितर्पितम् ॥५॥
5. sarvamāsīt susaṃtuṣṭaṃ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulam ,
viśvāmitrabalaṃ rāma vasiṣṭhenābhitarpitam.
5. sarvam āsīt susantuṣṭam hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulam
viśvāmitrabalam rāma vasiṣṭhena abhitarpitam

5. O Rāma, Viśvāmitra's entire army, having been sumptuously fed by Vasiṣṭha, was completely satisfied and filled with joyful and well-nourished people.
विश्वामित्रो ऽपि राजर्षिर्हृष्टपुष्टस्तदाभवत् ।
सान्तः पुरवरो राजा सब्राह्मणपुरोहितः ॥६॥
6. viśvāmitro'pi rājarṣirhṛṣṭapuṣṭastadābhavat ,
sāntaḥ puravaro rājā sabrāhmaṇapurohitaḥ.
6. viśvāmitraḥ api rājarṣiḥ hṛṣṭapuṣṭaḥ tadā
abhavat sāntaḥpuravaraḥ rājā sabrāhmaṇapurohitaḥ
6. tadā viśvāmitraḥ rājarṣiḥ api sāntaḥpuravaraḥ
rājā sabrāhmaṇapurohitaḥ hṛṣṭapuṣṭaḥ abhavat
6. Then, even the royal sage (rājarṣi) Viśvāmitra himself became delighted and well-nourished, along with the king, his chief queen (sāntaḥpuravara), and his Brahmins and priests (sabrāhmaṇapurohita).
सामात्यो मन्त्रिसहितः सभृत्यः पूजितस्तदा ।
युक्तः परेण हर्षेण वसिष्ठमिदमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. sāmātyo mantrisahitaḥ sabhṛtyaḥ pūjitastadā ,
yuktaḥ pareṇa harṣeṇa vasiṣṭhamidamabravīt.
7. sāmātyaḥ mantrisahitaḥ sabhṛtyaḥ pūjitaḥ tadā
yuktaḥ pareṇa harṣeṇa vasiṣṭham idam abravīt
7. tadā sāmātyaḥ mantrisahitaḥ sabhṛtyaḥ pūjitaḥ
pareṇa harṣeṇa yuktaḥ idam vasiṣṭham abravīt
7. Then, honored and accompanied by his ministers, counselors, and servants, and filled with supreme joy, he spoke this to Vasiṣṭha.
पूजितो ऽहं त्वया ब्रह्मन्पूजार्हेण सुसत्कृतः ।
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि वाक्यं वाक्यविशारद ॥८॥
8. pūjito'haṃ tvayā brahmanpūjārheṇa susatkṛtaḥ ,
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi vākyaṃ vākyaviśārada.
8. pūjitaḥ aham tvayā brahman pūjārheṇa susatkṛtaḥ
śrūyatām abhidhāsyāmi vākyam vākyaviśārada
8. brahman vākyaviśārada pūjārheṇa tvayā aham
pūjitaḥ susatkṛtaḥ śrūyatām vākyam abhidhāsyāmi
8. O Brahmin, O expert in speech, I have been greatly honored and well-treated by you, who are yourself worthy of honor. Listen; I will speak my words (vākyam).
गवां शतसहस्रेण दीयतां शबला मम ।
रत्नं हि भगवन्नेतद् रत्नहारी च पार्थिवः ।
तस्मान्मे शबलां देहि ममैषा धर्मतो द्विज ॥९॥
9. gavāṃ śatasahasreṇa dīyatāṃ śabalā mama ,
ratnaṃ hi bhagavannetad ratnahārī ca pārthivaḥ ,
tasmānme śabalāṃ dehi mamaiṣā dharmato dvija.
9. gavām śatasahasreṇa dīyatām śabalā
mama ratnam hi bhagavan etat
ratnahārī ca pārthivaḥ tasmāt me
śabalām dehi mama eṣā dharmataḥ dvija
9. bhagavan dvija,
gavām śatasahasreṇa mama śabalā dīyatām.
etat hi ratnam,
ca pārthivaḥ ratnahārī.
tasmāt śabalām me dehi.
eṣā dharmataḥ mama.
9. Let Shabalā be given to me in exchange for a hundred thousand cows. Indeed, O venerable one, this is a jewel, and a king is by his intrinsic nature (dharma) a collector of jewels. Therefore, give Shabalā to me. O twice-born (dvija), by natural law (dharma), she is mine.
एवमुक्तस्तु भगवान् वसिष्ठो मुनिसत्तमः ।
विश्वामित्रेण धर्मात्मा प्रत्युवाच महीपतिम् ॥१०॥
10. evamuktastu bhagavān vasiṣṭho munisattamaḥ ,
viśvāmitreṇa dharmātmā pratyuvāca mahīpatim.
10. evam uktaḥ tu bhagavān vasiṣṭhaḥ munisattamaḥ
viśvāmitreṇa dharmātmā pratyuvāca mahīpatim
10. tu evam viśvāmitreṇa uktaḥ bhagavān dharmātmā
munisattamaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ mahīpatim pratyuvāca
10. But the venerable Vasiṣṭha, the best among sages, a righteous soul (dharmātmā), thus addressed by Viśvāmitra, replied to the king.
नाहं शतसहस्रेण नापि कोटिशतैर्गवाम् ।
राजन्दास्यामि शबलां राशिभी रजतस्य वा ॥११॥
11. nāhaṃ śatasahasreṇa nāpi koṭiśatairgavām ,
rājandāsyāmi śabalāṃ rāśibhī rajatasya vā.
11. na aham śatasahasreṇa na api koṭiśataiḥ gavām
rājan dāsyāmi śabalām rāśibhiḥ rajatasya vā
11. rājan,
aham śatasahasreṇa gavām na api koṭiśataiḥ vā rajatasya rāśibhiḥ śabalām na dāsyāmi
11. O King, I will not give Shabala away for a hundred thousand (cows), nor even for hundreds of millions of cows, or for heaps of silver.
न परित्यागमर्हेयं मत्सकाशादरिंदम ।
शाश्वती शबला मह्यं कीर्तिरात्मवतो यथा ॥१२॥
12. na parityāgamarheyaṃ matsakāśādariṃdama ,
śāśvatī śabalā mahyaṃ kīrtirātmavato yathā.
12. na parityāgam arheyam matsakāśāt ariṃdama
śāśvatī śabalā mahyam kīrtiḥ ātmavataḥ yathā
12. ariṃdama,
iyam matsakāśāt parityāgam na arheyam.
śabalā mahyam ātmavataḥ śāśvatī kīrtiḥ yathā (asti).
12. O subduer of enemies, she is not fit to be relinquished by me. Shabala is to me like the eternal glory (kīrti) of a self-controlled person (ātman).
अस्यां हव्यं च कव्यं च प्राणयात्रा तथैव च ।
आयत्तमग्निहोत्रं च बलिर्होमस्तथैव च ॥१३॥
13. asyāṃ havyaṃ ca kavyaṃ ca prāṇayātrā tathaiva ca ,
āyattamagnihotraṃ ca balirhomastathaiva ca.
13. asyām havyam ca kavyam ca prāṇayātrā tathā eva ca
āyattam agnihotram ca baliḥ homaḥ tathā eva ca
13. asyām havyam ca kavyam ca tathā eva ca prāṇayātrā āyattam.
agnihotram ca baliḥ ca homaḥ ca tathā eva (asyām) (āyattam).
13. Upon her depend both the oblations for the gods and for the ancestors, as well as the sustenance of life (prāṇayātrā). The Agnihotra (fire sacrifice), offerings (bali), and fire rituals (homa) also similarly depend on her.
स्वाहाकारवषट्कारौ विद्याश्च विविधास्तथा ।
आयत्तमत्र राजर्षे सर्वमेतन्न संशयः ॥१४॥
14. svāhākāravaṣaṭkārau vidyāśca vividhāstathā ,
āyattamatra rājarṣe sarvametanna saṃśayaḥ.
14. svāhākāravaṣaṭkārau vidyāḥ ca vividhāḥ tathā
āyattam atra rājarṣe sarvam etat na saṃśayaḥ
14. rājarṣe,
svāhākāravaṣaṭkārau ca vividhāḥ vidyāḥ ca tathā etat sarvam atra āyattam.
saṃśayaḥ na (asti).
14. O royal sage, the recitations of Svāhā and Vaṣaṭ, and similarly various types of knowledge (vidyā), all these things are dependent on her here. There is no doubt (saṃśaya) about this.
सर्व स्वमेतत् सत्येन मम तुष्टिकरी सदा ।
कारणैर्बहुभी राजन्न दास्ये शबलां तव ॥१५॥
15. sarva svametat satyena mama tuṣṭikarī sadā ,
kāraṇairbahubhī rājanna dāsye śabalāṃ tava.
15. sarvam svam etat satyena mama tuṣṭikarī sadā
kāraṇaiḥ bahubhī rājan na dāsye śabalām tava
15. rājan etat sarvam svam satyena sadā mama tuṣṭikarī (asti).
bahubhī kāraṇaiḥ tava śabalām na dāsye.
15. This entire possession (sva) truly always brings me satisfaction. O King, I will not give Śabalā to you for many reasons.
वसिष्ठेनैवमुक्तस्तु विश्वामित्रो ऽब्रवीत्ततः ।
संरब्धतरमत्यर्थं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥१६॥
16. vasiṣṭhenaivamuktastu viśvāmitro'bravīttataḥ ,
saṃrabdhataramatyarthaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
16. vasiṣṭhena evam uktaḥ tu viśvāmitraḥ abravīt tataḥ
saṃrabdhataram atyartham vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
16. vasiṣṭhena evam uktaḥ tu,
atyartham saṃrabdhataram vākyaviśāradaḥ viśvāmitraḥ tataḥ vākyam abravīt.
16. After Vasiṣṭha was thus addressed, Viśvāmitra, who was exceedingly enraged and an expert in speech, then spoke these words.
हैरण्यकक्ष्याग्रैवेयान् सुवर्णाङ्कुशभूषितान् ।
ददामि कुञ्जराणां ते सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥१७॥
17. hairaṇyakakṣyāgraiveyān suvarṇāṅkuśabhūṣitān ,
dadāmi kuñjarāṇāṃ te sahasrāṇi caturdaśa.
17. hairaṇyakakṣyāgraiveyān suvarṇāṅkuśabhūṣitān
dadāmi kuñjarāṇām te sahasrāṇi caturdaśa
17. (aham) te hairaṇyakakṣyāgraiveyān suvarṇāṅkuśabhūṣitān kuñjarāṇām caturdaśa sahasrāṇi dadāmi.
17. I shall give you fourteen thousand elephants that have golden girths and necklaces, and are adorned with golden goads.
हैरण्यानां रथानां च श्वेताश्वानां चतुर्युजाम् ।
ददामि ते शतान्यष्टौ किङ्किणीकविभूषितान् ॥१८॥
18. hairaṇyānāṃ rathānāṃ ca śvetāśvānāṃ caturyujām ,
dadāmi te śatānyaṣṭau kiṅkiṇīkavibhūṣitān.
18. hairaṇyānām rathānām ca śvetāśvānām caturyujām
dadāmi te śatāni aṣṭau kiṅkiṇīkavibhūṣitān
18. (aham) te ca hairaṇyānām rathānām,
śvetāśvānām caturyujām,
kiṅkiṇīkavibhūṣitān aṣṭau śatāni dadāmi.
18. And I give you eight hundred golden chariots, each yoked with four white horses and adorned with small bells.
हयानां देशजातानां कुलजानां महौजसाम् ।
सहस्रमेकं दश च ददामि तव सुव्रत ॥१९॥
19. hayānāṃ deśajātānāṃ kulajānāṃ mahaujasām ,
sahasramekaṃ daśa ca dadāmi tava suvrata.
19. hayānām deśajātānām kulajānām mahaujasām
sahasram ekam daśa ca dadāmi tava suvrata
19. suvrata tava deśajātānām kulajānām mahaujasām
hayānām ekam sahasram daśa ca dadāmi
19. O virtuous one, I will give you one thousand and ten horses, all native-born, of noble lineage, and possessing great vigor.
नानावर्णविभक्तानां वयःस्थानां तथैव च ।
ददाम्येकां गवां कोटिं शबला दीयतां मम ॥२०॥
20. nānāvarṇavibhaktānāṃ vayaḥsthānāṃ tathaiva ca ,
dadāmyekāṃ gavāṃ koṭiṃ śabalā dīyatāṃ mama.
20. nānāvarṇavibhaktānām vayaḥsthānām tathā eva ca
dadāmi ekām gavām koṭim śabalā dīyatām mama
20. nānāvarṇavibhaktānām tathā eva ca vayaḥsthānām
gavām ekām koṭim dadāmi śabalā mama dīyatām
20. I will give you a crore of cows (koṭi), categorized by various colors and of suitable age. Let Śabalā be given to me.
एवमुक्तस्तु भगवान् विश्वामित्रेण धीमता ।
न दास्यामीति शबलां प्राह राजन् कथं चन ॥२१॥
21. evamuktastu bhagavān viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā ,
na dāsyāmīti śabalāṃ prāha rājan kathaṃ cana.
21. evam uktaḥ tu bhagavān viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā na
dāsyāmi iti śabalām prāha rājan katham cana
21. tu dhīmatā viśvāmitreṇa evam uktaḥ bhagavān
rājan śabalām katham cana na dāsyāmi iti prāha
21. However, the venerable Vasiṣṭha, thus addressed by the intelligent Viśvāmitra, said, 'O king, I will by no means give up Śabalā.'
एतदेव हि मे रत्नमेतदेव हि मे धनम् ।
एतदेव हि सर्वस्वमेतदेव हि जीवितम् ॥२२॥
22. etadeva hi me ratnametadeva hi me dhanam ,
etadeva hi sarvasvametadeva hi jīvitam.
22. etat eva hi me ratnam etat eva hi me dhanam
etat eva hi sarvasvam etat eva hi jīvitam
22. hi etat eva me ratnam hi etat eva me dhanam
hi etat eva sarvasvam hi etat eva jīvitam
22. Indeed, this alone is my gem; this alone is my wealth. Indeed, this alone is my whole possession; this alone is my very life.
दर्शश्च पूर्णमासश्च यज्ञाश्चैवाप्तदक्षिणाः ।
एतदेव हि मे राजन् विविधाश्च क्रियास्तथा ॥२३॥
23. darśaśca pūrṇamāsaśca yajñāścaivāptadakṣiṇāḥ ,
etadeva hi me rājan vividhāśca kriyāstathā.
23. darśaḥ ca pūrṇamāsaḥ ca yajñāḥ ca eva āptadakṣiṇāḥ
etad eva hi me rājan vividhāḥ ca kriyāḥ tathā
23. rājan darśaḥ ca pūrṇamāsaḥ ca āptadakṣiṇāḥ yajñāḥ
ca eva etad vividhāḥ kriyāḥ ca hi me tathā
23. O King, both the new moon (darśa) and full moon (pūrṇamāsa) Vedic rituals (yajña), and indeed other rituals (yajña) for which the sacrificial fees (dakṣiṇā) have been duly received - these, as well as various other actions (kriyā), are certainly mine.
अदोमूलाः क्रियाः सर्वा मम राजन्न संशयः ।
बहूनां किं प्रलापेन न दास्ये कामदोहिनीम् ॥२४॥
24. adomūlāḥ kriyāḥ sarvā mama rājanna saṃśayaḥ ,
bahūnāṃ kiṃ pralāpena na dāsye kāmadohinīm.
24. adomūlāḥ kriyāḥ sarvāḥ mama rājan na saṃśayaḥ
bahūnām kim pralāpena na dāsye kāmadohinīm
24. rājan sarvāḥ kriyāḥ adomūlāḥ mama na saṃśayaḥ
bahūnām pralāpena kim na dāsye kāmadohinīm
24. O King, all these actions (kriyā) have that as their source; there is no doubt. What is the use of much talk? I will not give the wish-fulfilling (kāmadohinī) cow.
