श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्य वायुसूनोर्महात्मनः ।
उवाचात्महितं वाक्यं सीता सुरसुतोपमा ॥१॥
1. śrutvā tu vacanaṃ tasya vāyusūnormahātmanaḥ ,

1. Having heard the words of that magnanimous son of Vayu, Sītā, who resembled a daughter of the gods, spoke words beneficial to her own self (ātman).
त्वां दृष्ट्वा प्रियवक्तारं संप्रहृष्यामि वानर ।
अर्धसंजातसस्येव वृष्टिं प्राप्य वसुंधरा ॥२॥
2. tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā priyavaktāraṃ saṃprahṛṣyāmi vānara ,
ardhasaṃjātasasyeva vṛṣṭiṃ prāpya vasuṃdharā.
2. tvām dṛṣṭvā priyavaktāram samprahṛṣyāmi vānara
ardhasaṃjātasasyā iva vṛṣṭim prāpya vasundharā
2. vānara priyavaktāram tvām dṛṣṭvā aham samprahṛṣyāmi
ardhasaṃjātasasyā vasundharā vṛṣṭim prāpya iva
2. O monkey, having seen you, a speaker of pleasing words, I greatly rejoice, just as the earth rejoices upon receiving rain when its crops are half-grown.
यथा तं पुरुषव्याघ्रं गात्रैः शोकाभिकर्शितैः ।
संस्पृशेयं सकामाहं तथा कुरु दयां मयि ॥३॥
3. yathā taṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ gātraiḥ śokābhikarśitaiḥ ,
saṃspṛśeyaṃ sakāmāhaṃ tathā kuru dayāṃ mayi.
3. yathā tam puruṣavyāghram gātraiḥ śokābhikarśitaiḥ
saṃspṛśeyam sakāmā aham tathā kuru dayām mayi
3. mayi dayām kuru tathā aham sakāmā śokābhikarśitaiḥ
gātraiḥ tam puruṣavyāghram yathā saṃspṛśeyam
3. Have mercy on me so that I, full of yearning, may touch that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) with my limbs, which are emaciated by sorrow.
अभिज्ञानं च रामस्य दत्तं हरिगणोत्तम ।
क्षिप्तामीषिकां काकस्य कोपादेकाक्षिशातनीम् ॥४॥
4. abhijñānaṃ ca rāmasya dattaṃ harigaṇottama ,
kṣiptāmīṣikāṃ kākasya kopādekākṣiśātanīm.
4. abhijñānam ca rāmasya dattam harigaṇottama
kṣiptām īṣikām kākasya kopāt ekākṣiśātanīm
4. ca harigaṇottama rāmasya dattam abhijñānam

4. And, O best of the monkey hosts, the token (abhijñāna) given by Rama is this: the blade of grass thrown in anger that blinded one eye of the crow.
मनःशिलायास्तिकलो गण्डपार्श्वे निवेशितः ।
त्वया प्रनष्टे तिलके तं किल स्मर्तुमर्हसि ॥५॥
5. manaḥśilāyāstikalo gaṇḍapārśve niveśitaḥ ,
tvayā pranaṣṭe tilake taṃ kila smartumarhasi.
5. manaḥśilāyāḥ tilakaḥ gaṇḍapārśve niveśitaḥ
tvayā pranaṣṭe tilake tam kila smartum arhasi
5. tvayā gaṇḍapārśve manaḥśilāyāḥ tilakaḥ niveśitaḥ

5. You should certainly remember that mark (tilaka) made of red arsenic (manaḥśilā) placed by you on my cheek, when the original mark had faded.
स वीर्यवान् कथं सीतां हृतां समनुमन्यसे ।
वसन्तीं रक्षसां मध्ये महेन्द्रवरुणोपम ॥६॥
6. sa vīryavān kathaṃ sītāṃ hṛtāṃ samanumanyase ,
vasantīṃ rakṣasāṃ madhye mahendravaruṇopama.
6. saḥ vīryavān katham sītām hṛtām samanumanyase
vasantīm rakṣasām madhye mahendravaruṇopama
6. mahendravaruṇopama saḥ vīryavān katham hṛtām
rakṣasām madhye vasantīm sītām samanumanyase
6. O you who are comparable to the great Indra and Varuna, how can you, being so valiant, tolerate Sita, who has been abducted and is now dwelling among the Rākṣasas?
एष चूडामणिर्दिव्यो मया सुपरिरक्षितः ।
एतं दृष्ट्वा प्रहृष्यामि व्यसने त्वामिवानघ ॥७॥
7. eṣa cūḍāmaṇirdivyo mayā suparirakṣitaḥ ,
etaṃ dṛṣṭvā prahṛṣyāmi vyasane tvāmivānagha.
7. eṣaḥ cūḍāmaṇiḥ divyaḥ mayā suparirakṣitaḥ etam
dṛṣṭvā prahṛṣyāmi vyasane tvām iva anagha
7. anagha mayā eṣaḥ divyaḥ cūḍāmaṇiḥ suparirakṣitaḥ
etam dṛṣṭvā vyasane tvām iva aham prahṛṣyāmi
7. O sinless one (anagha), this divine crest-jewel has been very carefully protected by me. Seeing this, I greatly rejoice in my distress, just as I would rejoice seeing you (Rāma).
एष निर्यातितः श्रीमान्मया ते वारिसंभवः ।
अतः परं न शक्ष्यामि जीवितुं शोकलालसा ॥८॥
8. eṣa niryātitaḥ śrīmānmayā te vārisaṃbhavaḥ ,
ataḥ paraṃ na śakṣyāmi jīvituṃ śokalālasā.
8. eṣaḥ niryātitaḥ śrīmān mayā te vārisambhavaḥ
ataḥ param na śakṣyāmi jīvitum śokalālasā
8. mayā te eṣaḥ śrīmān vārisambhavaḥ niryātitaḥ
ataḥ param śokalālasā aham jīvitum na śakṣyāmi
8. This glorious, water-born (vārisambhava) jewel has been sent by me to you. Henceforth, I, filled with longing and sorrow, will not be able to sustain my life.
असह्यानि च दुःखानि वाचश्च हृदयच्छिदः ।
राक्षसीनां सुघोराणां त्वत्कृते मर्षयाम्यहम् ॥९॥
9. asahyāni ca duḥkhāni vācaśca hṛdayacchidaḥ ,
rākṣasīnāṃ sughorāṇāṃ tvatkṛte marṣayāmyaham.
9. asahyāni ca duḥkhāni vācaḥ ca hṛdayacchidaḥ
rākṣasīnām sughorāṇām tvatkṛte marṣayāmi aham
9. aham rākṣasīnām sughorāṇām asahyāni duḥkhāni
ca hṛdayacchidaḥ vācaḥ ca tvatkṛte marṣayāmi
9. I endure the unbearable sufferings and the heart-rending words of the exceedingly dreadful rākṣasīs, all for your sake.
धारयिष्यामि मासं तु जीवितं शत्रुसूदन ।
मासादूर्ध्वं न जीविष्ये त्वया हीना नृपात्मज ॥१०॥
10. dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṃ tu jīvitaṃ śatrusūdana ,
māsādūrdhvaṃ na jīviṣye tvayā hīnā nṛpātmaja.
10. dhārayiṣyāmi māsam tu jīvitam śatrusūdana
māsāt ūrdhvam na jīviṣye tvayā hīnā nṛpātmaja
10. śatrusūdana nṛpātmaja tu aham jīvitam māsam
dhārayiṣyāmi māsāt ūrdhvam tvayā hīnā na jīviṣye
10. Indeed, I will sustain my life for only one month, O destroyer of foes (śatrusūdana). After this month, I will not live, separated from you, O son of the king (nṛpātmaja).
घोरो राक्षसराजो ऽयं दृष्टिश्च न सुखा मयि ।
त्वां च श्रुत्वा विपद्यन्तं न जीवेयमहं क्षणम् ॥११॥
11. ghoro rākṣasarājo'yaṃ dṛṣṭiśca na sukhā mayi ,
tvāṃ ca śrutvā vipadyantaṃ na jīveyamahaṃ kṣaṇam.
11. ghoraḥ rākṣasarājaḥ ayam dṛṣṭiḥ ca na sukhā mayi
tvām ca śrutvā vipadyantam na jīveyam aham kṣaṇam
11. ayam ghoraḥ rākṣasarājaḥ (asti).
ca mayi dṛṣṭiḥ na sukhā (asti).
ca tvām vipadyantam śrutvā aham kṣaṇam na jīveyam.
11. This king of rākṣasas is terrifying, and his gaze upon me is not favorable. If I were to hear that you have perished, I would not live for even a moment.
वैदेह्या वचनं श्रुत्वा करुणं साश्रुभाषितम् ।
अथाब्रवीन्महातेजा हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः ॥१२॥
12. vaidehyā vacanaṃ śrutvā karuṇaṃ sāśrubhāṣitam ,
athābravīnmahātejā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.
12. vaidehyāḥ vacanam śrutvā karuṇam sāśrubhāṣitam
atha abravīt mahātejāḥ hanumān mārutātmajaḥ
12. vaidehyāḥ karuṇam sāśrubhāṣitam vacanam śrutvā,
atha mahātejāḥ mārutātmajaḥ hanumān abravīt.
12. Having heard Vaidehi's (Sītā's) piteous and tear-filled words, then Hanumān, the greatly powerful son of Maruta, spoke.
त्वच्छोकविमुखो रामो देवि सत्येन ते शपे ।
रामे शोकाभिभूते तु लक्ष्मणः परितप्यते ॥१३॥
13. tvacchokavimukho rāmo devi satyena te śape ,
rāme śokābhibhūte tu lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyate.
13. tvat śokavimukhaḥ rāmaḥ devi satyena te śape
rāme śokābhibhūte tu lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyate
13. devi,
rāmaḥ tvat śokavimukhaḥ (asti iti) satyena te śape.
tu rāme śokābhibhūte (sati),
lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyate.
13. O goddess, Rāma is distressed by your sorrow; I swear this to you by truth. But when Rāma himself is overcome by grief, Lakṣmaṇa suffers intensely.
दृष्टा कथं चिद्भवती न कालः परिशोचितुम् ।
इमं मुहूर्तं दुःखानामन्तं द्रक्ष्यसि भामिनि ॥१४॥
14. dṛṣṭā kathaṃ cidbhavatī na kālaḥ pariśocitum ,
imaṃ muhūrtaṃ duḥkhānāmantaṃ drakṣyasi bhāmini.
14. dṛṣṭā katham cit bhavatī na kālaḥ pariśocitum
imam muhūrtam duḥkhānām antam drakṣyasi bhāmini
14. bhāmini,
bhavatī katham cit dṛṣṭā (asti).
(ataḥ) pariśocitum kālaḥ na.
imam muhūrtam duḥkhānām antam drakṣyasi.
14. Since you have been found, even with difficulty, it is no longer the time to lament. O beautiful lady, within this very moment, you will see the end of your sorrows.
ताव् उभौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ राजपुत्रावनिन्दितौ ।
त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहौ लङ्कां भस्मीकरिष्यतः ॥१५॥
15. tāv ubhau puruṣavyāghrau rājaputrāvaninditau ,
tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhau laṅkāṃ bhasmīkariṣyataḥ.
15. tau ubhau puruṣavyāghrau rājaputrau aninditau
tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhau laṅkām bhasmīkariṣyataḥ
15. tau ubhau aninditau puruṣavyāghrau rājaputrau
tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhau laṅkām bhasmīkariṣyataḥ
15. Those two irreproachable princes, who are like tigers among men, their enthusiasm now stirred by seeing you, will reduce Lanka to ashes.
हत्वा तु समरे क्रूरं रावणं सह बान्धवम् ।
राघवौ त्वां विशालाक्षि स्वां पुरीं प्रापयिष्यतः ॥१६॥
16. hatvā tu samare krūraṃ rāvaṇaṃ saha bāndhavam ,
rāghavau tvāṃ viśālākṣi svāṃ purīṃ prāpayiṣyataḥ.
16. hatvā tu samare krūram rāvaṇam saha bāndhavam
rāghavau tvām viśālākṣi svām purīm prāpayiṣyataḥ
16. viśālākṣi,
rāghavau tu samare krūram rāvaṇam saha bāndhavam hatvā tvām svām purīm prāpayiṣyataḥ
16. Indeed, having killed the cruel Ravana along with his kinsmen in battle, O wide-eyed one, the two Raghavas will bring you to their own city.
यत्तु रामो विजानीयादभिज्ञानमनिन्दिते ।
प्रीतिसंजननं तस्य भूयस्त्वं दातुमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. yattu rāmo vijānīyādabhijñānamanindite ,
prītisaṃjananaṃ tasya bhūyastvaṃ dātumarhasi.
17. yat tu rāmaḥ vijānīyāt abhijñānam anindite
prītisañjananam tasya bhūyaḥ tvam dātum arhasi
17. anindite,
tvam tu bhūyaḥ abhijñānam dātum arhasi,
yat rāmaḥ vijānīyāt (ca) tasya prītisañjananam (bhavet)
17. O blameless one, you should also give some further token of recognition that Rama would know and which would generate affection for him.
साब्रवीद्दत्तमेवेह मयाभिज्ञानमुत्तमम् ।
एतदेव हि रामस्य दृष्ट्वा मत्केशभूषणम् ।
श्रद्धेयं हनुमन् वाक्यं तव वीर भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. sābravīddattameveha mayābhijñānamuttamam ,
etadeva hi rāmasya dṛṣṭvā matkeśabhūṣaṇam ,
śraddheyaṃ hanuman vākyaṃ tava vīra bhaviṣyati.
18. sā abravīt dattam eva iha mayā
abhijñānam uttamam etat eva hi rāmasya
dṛṣṭvā matkeśabhūṣaṇam śraddheyam
hanuman vākyam tava vīra bhaviṣyati
18. sā abravīt,
"iha mayā uttamam abhijñānam dattam eva.
etat eva hi matkeśabhūṣaṇam rāmasya dṛṣṭvā,
hanuman vīra,
tava vākyam śraddheyam bhaviṣyati.
"
18. She said, "Indeed, an excellent token of recognition has been given by me here. Having seen this very hair ornament of mine, O hero Hanuman, your words will become trustworthy to Rama."
स तं मणिवरं गृह्य श्रीमान्प्लवगसत्तमः ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवीं गमनायोपचक्रमे ॥१९॥
19. sa taṃ maṇivaraṃ gṛhya śrīmānplavagasattamaḥ ,
praṇamya śirasā devīṃ gamanāyopacakrame.
19. saḥ tam maṇivaram gṛhya śrīmān plavagasattamaḥ
praṇamya śirasā devīm gamanāya upacakrame
19. śrīmān plavagasattamaḥ saḥ tam maṇivaram gṛhya
devīm śirasā praṇamya gamanāya upacakrame
19. That glorious best of monkeys (Hanuman), having taken that excellent jewel and having bowed his head to the goddess (Sita), began his departure.
तमुत्पातकृतोत्साहमवेक्ष्य हरिपुंगवम् ।
वर्धमानं महावेगमुवाच जनकात्मजा ।
अश्रुपूर्णमुखी दीना बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥२०॥
20. tamutpātakṛtotsāhamavekṣya haripuṃgavam ,
vardhamānaṃ mahāvegamuvāca janakātmajā ,
aśrupūrṇamukhī dīnā bāṣpagadgadayā girā.
20. tam utpātakṛtotsāham avekṣya
haripuṅgavam vardhamānam mahāvegam
uvāca janakātmajā aśrupūrṇamukhī
dīnā bāṣpagadgadayā girā
20. aśrupūrṇamukhī dīnā janakātmajā
tam utpātakṛtotsāham vardhamānam
mahāvegam haripuṅgavam
avekṣya bāṣpagadgadayā girā uvāca
20. Seeing that best of monkeys, whose enthusiasm was aroused for the great leap, growing immensely and with great speed, Janaka's daughter (Sita), with a face full of tears, distressed and with a voice choked with sobs, spoke.
हनूमन् सिंहसंकाशौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
सुग्रीवं च सहामात्यं सर्वान्ब्रूया अनामयम् ॥२१॥
21. hanūman siṃhasaṃkāśau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
sugrīvaṃ ca sahāmātyaṃ sarvānbrūyā anāmayam.
21. hanūman siṃhasaṃkāśau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau
sugrīvam ca sahāmātyam sarvān brūyāḥ anāmayam
21. hanūman siṃhasaṃkāśau rāmalakṣmaṇau bhrātarau
ca sahāmātyam sugrīvam sarvān anāmayam brūyāḥ
21. "O Hanuman, you should convey my well-being to the two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, who are like lions, and also to Sugriva along with his ministers."
यथा च स महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः ।
अस्माद्दुःखाम्बुसंरोधात्तत् समाधातुमर्हसि ॥२२॥
22. yathā ca sa mahābāhurmāṃ tārayati rāghavaḥ ,
asmādduḥkhāmbusaṃrodhāttat samādhātumarhasi.
22. yathā ca saḥ mahābāhuḥ mām tārayati rāghavaḥ
asmāt duḥkhāmbusaṃrodhāt tat samādhātum arhasi
22. yathā ca saḥ mahābāhuḥ rāghavaḥ mām asmāt duḥkhāmbusaṃrodhāt tārayati,
tat samādhātum arhasi
22. "And how that mighty-armed Rama (Rāghava) will deliver me from this confinement in the ocean of sorrow - you ought to arrange that."
इमं च तीव्रं मम शोकवेगं रक्षोभिरेभिः परिभर्त्सनं च ।
ब्रूयास्तु रामस्य गतः समीपं शिवश्च ते ऽध्वास्तु हरिप्रवीर ॥२३॥
23. imaṃ ca tīvraṃ mama śokavegaṃ rakṣobhirebhiḥ paribhartsanaṃ ca ,
brūyāstu rāmasya gataḥ samīpaṃ śivaśca te'dhvāstu haripravīra.
23. imam ca tīvram mama śokavegam
rakṣobhiḥ ebhiḥ paribhartasanam ca
brūyāḥ tu rāmasya gataḥ samīpam
śivaḥ ca te adhvā astu haripravīra
23. haripravīra tvam mama imam tīvram
śokavegam ebhiḥ rakṣobhiḥ ca
paribhartasanam rāmasya samīpam gataḥ
tu brūyāḥ te adhvā ca śivaḥ astu
23. O chief of monkeys, having gone near Rāma, you must tell him about this intense surge of my grief and the constant threats from these demonesses. May your path be auspicious.
स राजपुत्र्या प्रतिवेदितार्थः कपिः कृतार्थः परिहृष्टचेताः ।
तदल्पशेषं प्रसमीक्ष्य कार्यं दिशं ह्युदीचीं मनसा जगाम ॥२४॥
24. sa rājaputryā prativeditārthaḥ kapiḥ kṛtārthaḥ parihṛṣṭacetāḥ ,
tadalpaśeṣaṃ prasamīkṣya kāryaṃ diśaṃ hyudīcīṃ manasā jagāma.

kapiḥ kṛtārthaḥ parihṛṣṭacetāḥ
tat alpaśeṣam prasamīkṣya kāryam
diśam hi udīcīm manasā jagāma

hi manasā udīcīm diśam jagāma
24. That monkey, whose purpose had been made known by the princess, felt his task accomplished and his mind greatly gladdened. Having fully considered that little work remained, he indeed set his mind towards the northern direction.
