तं तु रामः समाश्वास्य भ्रातरं गुरुवत्सलम् ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा प्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे ॥१॥
1. taṃ tu rāmaḥ samāśvāsya bhrātaraṃ guruvatsalam ,
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā praṣṭuṃ samupacakrame.

1. Rama, having first consoled that brother who was devoted to his elders (guru), then began to question him, accompanied by his brother Lakshmana.
किमेतदिच्छेयमहं श्रोतुं प्रव्याहृतं त्वया ।
यस्मात्त्वमागतो देशमिमं चीरजटाजिनी ॥२॥
2. kimetadiccheyamahaṃ śrotuṃ pravyāhṛtaṃ tvayā ,
yasmāttvamāgato deśamimaṃ cīrajaṭājinī.
2. kim etat iccheyam aham śrotum pravyāhṛtam tvayā
yasmāt tvam āgataḥ deśam imam cīra-jaṭā-ajinī
2. aham kim etat tvayā pravyāhṛtam śrotum iccheyam
yasmāt tvam cīra-jaṭā-ajinī imam deśam āgataḥ
2. I wish to hear from you what this is, what has been uttered by you, and for what reason you have come to this region, dressed in bark garments and matted locks.
यन्निमित्तमिमं देशं कृष्णाजिनजटाधरः ।
हित्वा राज्यं प्रविष्टस्त्वं तत् सर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥३॥
3. yannimittamimaṃ deśaṃ kṛṣṇājinajaṭādharaḥ ,
hitvā rājyaṃ praviṣṭastvaṃ tat sarvaṃ vaktumarhasi.
3. yat nimittam imam deśam kṛṣṇa-ajina-jaṭā-dharaḥ
hitvā rājyam praviṣṭaḥ tvam tat sarvam vaktum arhasi
3. kṛṣṇa-ajina-jaṭā-dharaḥ tvam yat nimittam rājyam
hitvā imam deśam praviṣṭaḥ tat sarvam vaktum arhasi
3. You, who bear a black deerskin and matted locks, should narrate completely the reason for which you have abandoned your kingdom and entered this region.
इत्युक्तः केकयीपुत्रः काकुत्स्थेन महात्मना ।
प्रगृह्य बलवद्भूयः प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. ityuktaḥ kekayīputraḥ kākutsthena mahātmanā ,
pragṛhya balavadbhūyaḥ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt.
4. iti uktaḥ kaikeyi-putraḥ kākutsthena mahā-ātmanā
pragṛhya balavat bhūyaḥ prāñjaliḥ vākyam abravīt
4. iti mahā-ātmanā kākutsthena uktaḥ kaikeyi-putraḥ
balavat bhūyaḥ pragṛhya prāñjaliḥ vākyam abravīt
4. Thus addressed by the great-souled (mahātman) Kakutstha (Rama), the son of Kaikeyī (Bharata), again clasping his hands firmly in supplication, spoke the following words.
आर्यं तातः परित्यज्य कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ।
गतः स्वर्गं महाबाहुः पुत्रशोकाभिपीडितः ॥५॥
5. āryaṃ tātaḥ parityajya kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ,
gataḥ svargaṃ mahābāhuḥ putraśokābhipīḍitaḥ.
5. āryam tātaḥ parityajya kṛtvā karma su-duṣkaram
gataḥ svargam mahā-bāhuḥ putra-śoka-abhipīḍitaḥ
5. putra-śoka-abhipīḍitaḥ mahā-bāhuḥ tātaḥ āryam
parityajya su-duṣkaram karma kṛtvā svargam gataḥ
5. Our father, the mighty-armed (mahābāhu), afflicted by grief for his son, having abandoned the noble one (ārya) and performed a very difficult deed (karma), has departed for heaven.
स्त्रिया नियुक्तः कैकेय्या मम मात्रा परंतप ।
चकार सुमहत् पापमिदमात्मयशोहरम् ॥६॥
6. striyā niyuktaḥ kaikeyyā mama mātrā paraṃtapa ,
cakāra sumahat pāpamidamātmayaśoharam.

cakāra sumahat pāpam idam ātmayśoharam
6. parantapa mama mātrā kaikeyyā striyā niyuktaḥ

6. O tormentor of foes, compelled by my mother Kaikeyī, that woman, [my father] committed this very great sin, which destroys her own fame (ātman-yaśas).
सा राज्यफलमप्राप्य विधवा शोककर्शिता ।
पतिष्यति महाघोरे निरये जननी मम ॥७॥
7. sā rājyaphalamaprāpya vidhavā śokakarśitā ,
patiṣyati mahāghore niraye jananī mama.
7. sā rājyaphalam aprāpya vidhavā śokakarśitā
patiṣyati mahāghore niraye jananī mama
7. mama jananī sā rājyaphalam aprāpya vidhavā
śokakarśitā mahāghore niraye patiṣyati
7. My mother, not having obtained the fruit of kingship, widowed and emaciated by grief, will fall into a terribly dreadful hell (niraya).
तस्य मे दासभूतस्य प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
अभिषिञ्चस्व चाद्यैव राज्येन मघवानिव ॥८॥
8. tasya me dāsabhūtasya prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ,
abhiṣiñcasva cādyaiva rājyena maghavāniva.
8. tasya me dāsabhūtasya prasādam kartum arhasi
abhiṣiñcasva ca adya eva rājyena maghavān iva
8. tasya me dāsabhūtasya prasādam kartum arhasi
ca adya eva rājyena maghavān iva abhiṣiñcasva
8. You ought to show favor to me, who has become your servant. And anoint yourself with the kingdom today itself, like Maghavan (Indra).
इमाः प्रकृतयः सर्वा विधवा मातुरश्च याः ।
त्वत् सकाशमनुप्राप्ताः प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥९॥
9. imāḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvā vidhavā māturaśca yāḥ ,
tvat sakāśamanuprāptāḥ prasādaṃ kartumarhasi.
9. imāḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ vidhavāḥ māturaḥ ca yāḥ
tvat sakāśam anuprāptāḥ prasādam kartum arhasi
9. imāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ ca yāḥ vidhavāḥ māturaḥ
tvat sakāśam anuprāptāḥ prasādam kartum arhasi
9. All these subjects, and those who are widowed mothers, have arrived in your presence. You ought to show them favor.
तदानुपूर्व्या युक्तं च युक्तं चात्मनि मानद ।
राज्यं प्राप्नुहि धर्मेण सकामान् सुहृदः कुरु ॥१०॥
10. tadānupūrvyā yuktaṃ ca yuktaṃ cātmani mānada ,
rājyaṃ prāpnuhi dharmeṇa sakāmān suhṛdaḥ kuru.
10. tadā ānupūrvyā yuktam ca yuktam ca ātmani mānada
rājyam prāpnuhi dharmeṇa sakāmān suhṛdaḥ kuru
10. mānada tadā ānupūrvyā yuktam ca ātmani ca yuktam
rājyam dharmeṇa prāpnuhi sakāmān suhṛdaḥ kuru
10. O respected one, then, obtain this kingdom, which is in due order and fitting for your own self (ātman). Rule in accordance with natural law (dharma), and fulfill the desires of your friends.
भवत्वविधवा भूमिः समग्रा पतिना त्वया ।
शशिना विमलेनेव शारदी रजनी यथा ॥११॥
11. bhavatvavidhavā bhūmiḥ samagrā patinā tvayā ,
śaśinā vimaleneva śāradī rajanī yathā.
11. bhavatu avidhavā bhūmiḥ samagrā patinā tvayā
śaśinā vimalena iva śāradī rajanī yathā
11. yathā vimalena śaśinā śāradī rajanī iva,
(tathā) bhūmiḥ tvayā patinā samagrā avidhavā bhavatu
11. May this entire land (bhūmi) not be widowed, but be complete with you as its husband, just as an autumnal night is made radiant by a spotless moon.
एभिश्च सचिवैः सार्धं शिरसा याचितो मया ।
भ्रातुः शिष्यस्य दासस्य प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. ebhiśca sacivaiḥ sārdhaṃ śirasā yācito mayā ,
bhrātuḥ śiṣyasya dāsasya prasādaṃ kartumarhasi.
12. ebhiḥ ca sacivaiḥ sārdham śirasā yācitaḥ mayā
bhrātuḥ śiṣyasya dāsasya prasādam kartum arhasi
12. ca ebhiḥ sacivaiḥ sārdham mayā śirasā yācitaḥ (tvam)
bhrātuḥ śiṣyasya dāsasya prasādam kartum arhasi
12. And, having been implored by me with bowed head, together with these ministers, you ought to show favor to your brother, disciple, and servant.
तदिदं शाश्वतं पित्र्यं सर्वं सचिवमण्डलम् ।
पूजितं पुरुषव्याघ्र नातिक्रमितुमुत्सहे ॥१३॥
13. tadidaṃ śāśvataṃ pitryaṃ sarvaṃ sacivamaṇḍalam ,
pūjitaṃ puruṣavyāghra nātikramitumutsahe.
13. tat idam śāśvatam pitryam sarvam sacivamaṇḍalam
pūjitam puruṣavyāghra na atikramitum utsahe
13. puruṣavyāghra (aham) idam tat śāśvatam pitryam
sarvam sacivamaṇḍalam pūjitam na atikramitum utsahe
13. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), I do not dare to disregard this entire assembly of ministers, which is eternal, ancestral, and revered.
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुः सबाष्पः केकयीसुतः ।
रामस्य शिरसा पादौ जग्राह भरतः पुनः ॥१४॥
14. evamuktvā mahābāhuḥ sabāṣpaḥ kekayīsutaḥ ,
rāmasya śirasā pādau jagrāha bharataḥ punaḥ.
14. evam uktvā mahābāhuḥ sa-bāṣpaḥ kaikeyī-sutaḥ
rāmasya śirasā pādau jagrāha bharataḥ punaḥ
14. evam uktvā mahābāhuḥ sa-bāṣpaḥ kaikeyī-sutaḥ
bharataḥ punaḥ rāmasya pādau śirasā jagrāha
14. Having spoken thus, Bharata, the mighty-armed son of Kaikeyī, tearfully grasped Rama's feet with his head once again.
तं मत्तमिव मातङ्गं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः ।
भ्रातरं भरतं रामः परिष्वज्येदमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. taṃ mattamiva mātaṅgaṃ niḥśvasantaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ,
bhrātaraṃ bharataṃ rāmaḥ pariṣvajyedamabravīt.
15. tam mattam iva mātaṅgam niḥśvasantam punaḥ punaḥ
bhrātaram bharatam rāmaḥ pariṣvajya idam abravīt
15. rāmaḥ mattam mātaṅgam iva punaḥ punaḥ niḥśvasantam
tam bhrātaram bharatam pariṣvajya idam abravīt
15. Rama embraced his brother Bharata, who was sighing repeatedly like a frenzied elephant, and then said this.
कुलीनः सत्त्वसंपन्नस्तेजस्वी चरितव्रतः ।
राज्यहेतोः कथं पापमाचरेत्त्वद्विधो जनः ॥१६॥
16. kulīnaḥ sattvasaṃpannastejasvī caritavrataḥ ,
rājyahetoḥ kathaṃ pāpamācarettvadvidho janaḥ.
16. kulīnaḥ sattva-sampannaḥ tejasvī carita-vrataḥ
rājya-hetoḥ katham pāpam ācaret tvad-vidhaḥ janaḥ
16. kulīnaḥ sattva-sampannaḥ tejasvī carita-vrataḥ
tvad-vidhaḥ janaḥ rājya-hetoḥ pāpam katham ācaret
16. How could a person like you - noble-born, endowed with strength (sattva), radiant, and observant of vows - commit such a sin for the sake of a kingdom?
न दोषं त्वयि पश्यामि सूक्ष्ममप्यरि सूदन ।
न चापि जननीं बाल्यात्त्वं विगर्हितुमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. na doṣaṃ tvayi paśyāmi sūkṣmamapyari sūdana ,
na cāpi jananīṃ bālyāttvaṃ vigarhitumarhasi.
17. na doṣam tvayi paśyāmi sūkṣmam api ari-sūdana
na ca api jananīm bālyāt tvam vigarhitum arhasi
17. ari-sūdana,
aham tvayi sūkṣmam api doṣam na paśyāmi.
tvam ca bālyāt api jananīm vigarhitum na arhasi.
17. O destroyer of enemies, I see no fault, not even a subtle one, in you. Nor should you blame your mother (Kaikeyī), even if it were due to her immaturity or ignorance (bālyāt).
यावत् पितरि धर्मज्ञ गौरवं लोकसत्कृते ।
तावद्धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठ जनन्यामपि गौरवम् ॥१८॥
18. yāvat pitari dharmajña gauravaṃ lokasatkṛte ,
tāvaddharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭha jananyāmapi gauravam.
18. yāvat pitari dharmajña gauravam lokasatpute
tāvat dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭha jananyām api gauravam
18. dharmajña śreṣṭha yāvat gauravam pitari
lokasatpute tāvat jananyām api gauravam
18. O knower of righteousness (dharma), just as there is reverence for the father, who is honored by the world, similarly, O best among those who uphold righteousness (dharma), there is also reverence for the mother.
एताभ्यां धर्मशीलाभ्यां वनं गच्छेति राघव ।
माता पितृभ्यामुक्तो ऽहं कथमन्यत् समाचरे ॥१९॥
19. etābhyāṃ dharmaśīlābhyāṃ vanaṃ gaccheti rāghava ,
mātā pitṛbhyāmukto'haṃ kathamanyat samācare.
19. etābhyām dharmaśīlābhyām vanam gaccha iti rāghava
mātā pitṛbhyām uktaḥ aham katham anyat samācare
19. rāghava aham etābhyām dharmaśīlābhyām mātā pitṛbhyām
vanam gaccha iti uktaḥ katham anyat samācare
19. O Rāghava, I have been instructed by my mother and father, both of whom are devoted to righteousness (dharma), 'Go to the forest.' How can I act differently?
त्वया राज्यमयोध्यायां प्राप्तव्यं लोकसत्कृतम् ।
वस्तव्यं दण्डकारण्ये मया वल्कलवाससा ॥२०॥
20. tvayā rājyamayodhyāyāṃ prāptavyaṃ lokasatkṛtam ,
vastavyaṃ daṇḍakāraṇye mayā valkalavāsasā.
20. tvayā rājyam ayodhyāyām prāptavyam lokasatputam
vastavyam daṇḍakāraṇye mayā valkalavāsasā
20. tvayā lokasatputam rājyam ayodhyāyām prāptavyam
mayā valkalavāsasā daṇḍakāraṇye vastavyam
20. The kingdom, which is revered by the people, is to be obtained by you in Ayodhyā. I, wearing bark garments, must reside in the Daṇḍaka forest.
एवं कृत्वा महाराजो विभागं लोकसंनिधौ ।
व्यादिश्य च महातेजा दिवं दशरथो गतः ॥२१॥
21. evaṃ kṛtvā mahārājo vibhāgaṃ lokasaṃnidhau ,
vyādiśya ca mahātejā divaṃ daśaratho gataḥ.
21. evam kṛtvā mahārājaḥ vibhāgam lokasaṃnidhau
vyādiśya ca mahātejāḥ divam daśarathaḥ gataḥ
21. evam lokasaṃnidhau vibhāgam kṛtvā ca vyādiśya
mahātejāḥ mahārājaḥ daśarathaḥ divam gataḥ
21. Having thus made an apportionment in the presence of the people and having given his instructions, the great King Daśaratha, who was immensely glorious, departed to heaven.
स च प्रमाणं धर्मात्मा राजा लोकगुरुस्तव ।
पित्रा दत्तं यथाभागमुपभोक्तुं त्वमर्हसि ॥२२॥
22. sa ca pramāṇaṃ dharmātmā rājā lokagurustava ,
pitrā dattaṃ yathābhāgamupabhoktuṃ tvamarhasi.
22. saḥ ca pramāṇam dharmātmā rājā lokaguruḥ tava
pitrā dattam yathābhāgam upabhoktum tvam arhasi
22. And that king, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness, your teacher (guru) to the people, is the authority. You ought to enjoy your share as given by your father.
चतुर्दश समाः सौम्य दण्डकारण्यमाश्रितः ।
उपभोक्ष्ये त्वहं दत्तं भागं पित्रा महात्मना ॥२३॥
23. caturdaśa samāḥ saumya daṇḍakāraṇyamāśritaḥ ,
upabhokṣye tvahaṃ dattaṃ bhāgaṃ pitrā mahātmanā.
23. caturdaśa samāḥ saumya daṇḍakāraṇyam āśritaḥ
upabhokṣye tu aham dattam bhāgam pitrā mahātmanā
23. O gentle one, having taken refuge in the Daṇḍaka forest for fourteen years, I shall indeed enjoy the share given by my great-souled father.
यदब्रवीन्मां नरलोकसत्कृतः पिता महात्मा विबुधाधिपोपमः ।
तदेव मन्ये परमात्मनो हितं न सर्वलोकेश्वरभावमव्ययम् ॥२४॥
24. yadabravīnmāṃ naralokasatkṛtaḥ pitā mahātmā vibudhādhipopamaḥ ,
tadeva manye paramātmano hitaṃ na sarvalokeśvarabhāvamavyayam.
24. yat abravīt mām naralokasatkṛtaḥ
pitā mahātmā vibudhādhipopamaḥ
tat eva manye paramātmanaḥ hitam
na sarvalokeśvarabhāvam avyayam
24. What my great-souled father, honored by people and comparable to the lord of gods, said to me - that alone I consider beneficial for the supreme Self (paramātman), and not the imperishable state of being the lord of all worlds.
