तेषां समुपविष्टानां सर्वेषां दीनचेतसाम् ।
उवाच वाक्यं काकुत्स्थो मुखेन परिशुष्यता ॥१॥

1. Kakutstha (Rama) spoke to all of them, who were seated and despondent, his mouth parched as he spoke.
सर्वे शृणुत भद्रं वो मा कुरुध्वं मनो ऽन्यथा ।
पौराणां मम सीतायां यादृशी वर्तते कथा ॥२॥
2. sarve śṛṇuta bhadraṃ vo mā kurudhvaṃ mano'nyathā ,
paurāṇāṃ mama sītāyāṃ yādṛśī vartate kathā.
2. sarve śṛṇuta bhadram vaḥ mā kurudhvam manaḥ
anyathā paurāṇām mama sītāyām yādṛśī vartate kathā
2. sarve śṛṇuta vaḥ bhadram manaḥ anyathā mā kurudhvam

2. All of you listen; may good fortune be yours. Do not let your minds dwell on anything else. (I will tell you) the kind of talk that exists among the citizens concerning my Sītā.
पौरापवादः सुमहांस्तथा जनपदस्य च ।
वर्तते मयि बीभत्सः स मे मर्माणि कृन्तति ॥३॥
3. paurāpavādaḥ sumahāṃstathā janapadasya ca ,
vartate mayi bībhatsaḥ sa me marmāṇi kṛntati.

3. A very great and hateful public censure, both from the citizens and from the people of the country, is directed at me. That censure pierces my vital parts.
अहं किल कुले जात इक्ष्वाकूणां महात्मनाम् ।
सीतां पापसमाचारामानयेयं कथं पुरे ॥४॥
4. ahaṃ kila kule jāta ikṣvākūṇāṃ mahātmanām ,
sītāṃ pāpasamācārāmānayeyaṃ kathaṃ pure.
4. aham kila kule jātaḥ ikṣvākūṇām mahātmanām
sītām pāpasamācārām ānayeyam katham pure
4. aham kila mahātmanām ikṣvākūṇām kule jātaḥ
sītām pāpasamācārām katham pure ānayeyam
4. I am said to be born in the noble family of the great-souled Ikṣvākus. How, then, can I bring Sītā, who is of wicked conduct, back into the city?
जानासि हि यथा सौम्य दण्डके विजने वने ।
रावणेन हृता सीता स च विध्वंसितो मया ॥५॥
5. jānāsi hi yathā saumya daṇḍake vijane vane ,
rāvaṇena hṛtā sītā sa ca vidhvaṃsito mayā.
5. jānāsi hi yathā saumya daṇḍake vijane vane
rāvaṇena hṛtā sītā saḥ ca vidhvamsitaḥ mayā
5. saumya hi jānāsi yathā vijane daṇḍake vane sītā rāvaṇena hṛtā,
ca saḥ mayā vidhvamsitaḥ
5. You certainly know, O gentle one, how Sītā was abducted by Rāvaṇa in the solitary Daṇḍaka forest, and how I subsequently destroyed him.
प्रत्यक्षं तव सौमित्रे देवानां हव्यवाहनः ।
अपापां मैथिलीमाह वायुश्चाकाशगोचरः ॥६॥
6. pratyakṣaṃ tava saumitre devānāṃ havyavāhanaḥ ,
apāpāṃ maithilīmāha vāyuścākāśagocaraḥ.
6. pratyakṣam tava saumitre devānām havyavāhanaḥ
apāpām maithilīm āha vāyuḥ ca ākāśagocaraḥ
6. saumitre tava pratyakṣam devānām havyavāhanaḥ
ca ākāśagocaraḥ vāyuḥ maithilīm apāpām āha
6. O son of Sumitrā (Saumitra), in your very presence, Agni, the bearer of offerings for the gods, declared Sītā (Maithilī) to be pure; and Vāyu, who moves through the sky, also affirmed this.
चन्द्रादित्यौ च शंसेते सुराणां संनिधौ पुरा ।
ऋषीणां चैव सर्वेषामपापां जनकात्मजाम् ॥७॥
7. candrādityau ca śaṃsete surāṇāṃ saṃnidhau purā ,
ṛṣīṇāṃ caiva sarveṣāmapāpāṃ janakātmajām.
7. candrādityau ca śaṃsete surāṇām saṃnidhau purā
ṛṣīṇām ca eva sarveṣām apāpām janakātmajām
7. purā surāṇām ṛṣīṇām sarveṣām ca eva saṃnidhau

7. Formerly, in the presence of the gods and all the sages, the moon and the sun themselves declared Janaka's daughter (Sītā) to be without fault.
एवं शुद्धसमाचारा देवगन्धर्वसंनिधौ ।
लङ्काद्वीपे महेन्द्रेण मम हस्ते निवेशिता ॥८॥
8. evaṃ śuddhasamācārā devagandharvasaṃnidhau ,
laṅkādvīpe mahendreṇa mama haste niveśitā.

8. In this manner, pure in her conduct, she was placed into my hand by Mahendra (Indra) on the island of Laṅkā, in the presence of the gods and gandharvas.
अन्तरात्मा च मे वेत्ति सीतां शुद्धां यशस्विनीम् ।
ततो गृहीत्वा वैदेहीमयोध्यामहमागतः ॥९॥
9. antarātmā ca me vetti sītāṃ śuddhāṃ yaśasvinīm ,
tato gṛhītvā vaidehīmayodhyāmahamāgataḥ.
9. antarātmā ca me vetti sītām śuddhām yaśasvinīm
tataḥ gṛhītvā vaidehīm ayodhyām aham āgataḥ
9. ca me antarātmā sītām śuddhām yaśasvinīm vetti
tataḥ vaidehīm gṛhītvā aham ayodhyām āgataḥ
9. And my inner self (antarātman) truly knows Sītā to be pure and glorious. Having then taken Vaidehī (Sītā), I came to Ayodhyā.
अयं तु मे महान् वादः शोकश्च हृदि वर्तते ।
पौरापवादः सुमहांस्तथा जनपदस्य च ॥१०॥
10. ayaṃ tu me mahān vādaḥ śokaśca hṛdi vartate ,
paurāpavādaḥ sumahāṃstathā janapadasya ca.
10. ayam tu me mahān vādaḥ śokaḥ ca hṛdi vartate
paurāpavādaḥ sumahān tathā janapadasya ca
10. ayam tu me mahān vādaḥ ca śokaḥ hṛdi vartate
paurāpavādaḥ sumahān tathā janapadasya ca
10. But this great reproach and sorrow resides in my heart; it is a very great public criticism from the citizens and also from the common people.
अकीर्तिर्यस्य गीयेत लोके भूतस्य कस्य चित् ।
पतत्येवाधमांल् लोकान्यावच्छब्दः स कीर्त्यते ॥११॥
11. akīrtiryasya gīyeta loke bhūtasya kasya cit ,
patatyevādhamāṃl lokānyāvacchabdaḥ sa kīrtyate.
11. akīrtiḥ yasya gīyeta loke bhūtasya kasya cit
patati eva adhamān lokān yāvat śabdaḥ saḥ kīrtyate
11. yasya kasya cit bhūtasya akīrtiḥ loke gīyeta saḥ
eva yāvat śabdaḥ kīrtyate adhamān lokān patati
11. If the infamy of any being is sung about in the world, that being certainly falls to the lower realms as long as that (infamous) name is mentioned.
अकीर्तिर्निन्द्यते दैवैः कीर्तिर्देवेषु पूज्यते ।
कीर्त्यर्थं च समारम्भः सर्व एव महात्मनाम् ॥१२॥
12. akīrtirnindyate daivaiḥ kīrtirdeveṣu pūjyate ,
kīrtyarthaṃ ca samārambhaḥ sarva eva mahātmanām.
12. akīrtiḥ nindyate daivaiḥ kīrtiḥ deveṣu pūjyate
kīrtyartham ca samārambhaḥ sarvaḥ eva mahātmanām
12. akīrtiḥ daivaiḥ nindyate kīrtiḥ deveṣu pūjyate
ca mahātmanām sarvaḥ eva samārambhaḥ kīrtyartham
12. Infamy is condemned by the gods, while fame is revered among the gods. Indeed, all undertakings of great souls (mahātman) are for the sake of renown.
अप्यहं जीवितं जह्यां युष्मान् वा पुरुषर्षभाः ।
अपवादभयाद्भीतः किं पुनर्जनकात्मजाम् ॥१३॥
13. apyahaṃ jīvitaṃ jahyāṃ yuṣmān vā puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
apavādabhayādbhītaḥ kiṃ punarjanakātmajām.
13. api aham jīvitam jahyām yuṣmān vā puruṣarṣabhāḥ
apavādabhayāt bhītaḥ kim punaḥ janakātmajām
13. puruṣarṣabhāḥ api aham apavādabhayāt bhītaḥ
jīvitam vā yuṣmān jahyām kim punaḥ janakātmajām
13. O best of men, I, fearful of public criticism, would even give up my life or abandon you. How much more then (would I abandon) Janaka's daughter (Sītā)?
तस्माद्भवन्तः पश्यन्तु पतितं शोकसागरे ।
न हि पश्याम्यहं भूयः किं चिद्दुःखमतो ऽधिकम् ॥१४॥
14. tasmādbhavantaḥ paśyantu patitaṃ śokasāgare ,
na hi paśyāmyahaṃ bhūyaḥ kiṃ cidduḥkhamato'dhikam.
14. tasmāt bhavantaḥ paśyantu patitam śokasāgare na hi
paśyāmi aham bhūyaḥ kim cit duḥkham ataḥ adhikam
14. tasmāt bhavantaḥ śokasāgare patitam paśyantu hi
aham ataḥ adhikam kim cit duḥkham bhūyaḥ na paśyāmi
14. Therefore, please see me, fallen into this ocean of sorrow. Indeed, I do not foresee any suffering greater than this ever again.
श्वस्त्वं प्रभाते सौमित्रे सुमन्त्राधिष्ठितं रथम् ।
आरुह्य सीतामारोप्य विषयान्ते समुत्सृज ॥१५॥
15. śvastvaṃ prabhāte saumitre sumantrādhiṣṭhitaṃ ratham ,
āruhya sītāmāropya viṣayānte samutsṛja.
15. śvas tvam prabhāte saumitre sumantra-adhiṣṭhitam
ratham āruhya sītām āropya viṣaya-ante samutsṛja
15. saumitre tvam śvas prabhāte sumantra-adhiṣṭhitam
ratham āruhya sītām āropya viṣaya-ante samutsṛja
15. Tomorrow morning, Lakṣmaṇa, you are to mount the chariot driven by Sumantra, take Sītā aboard, and then abandon her at the kingdom's frontier.
गङ्गायास्तु परे पारे वाल्मीकेः सुमहात्मनः ।
आश्रमो दिव्यसंकाशस्तमसातीरमाश्रितः ॥१६॥
16. gaṅgāyāstu pare pāre vālmīkeḥ sumahātmanaḥ ,
āśramo divyasaṃkāśastamasātīramāśritaḥ.
16. gaṅgāyāḥ tu pare pāre vālmīkeḥ su-mahā-ātmanaḥ
āśramaḥ divya-saṃkāśaḥ tamasā-tīram āśritaḥ
16. vālmīkeḥ su-mahā-ātmanaḥ divya-saṃkāśaḥ āśramaḥ
gaṅgāyāḥ tu pare pāre tamasā-tīram āśritaḥ
16. On the far bank of the Gaṅgā, the hermitage (āśrama) of the noble-souled Vālmīki, appearing divinely radiant, is located on the bank of the Tamasā river.
तत्रैनां विजने कक्षे विसृज्य रघुनन्दन ।
शीघ्रमागच्छ सौमित्रे कुरुष्व वचनं मम ॥१७॥
17. tatraināṃ vijane kakṣe visṛjya raghunandana ,
śīghramāgaccha saumitre kuruṣva vacanaṃ mama.
17. tatra enām vijane kakṣe visṛjya raghu-nandana
śīghram āgaccha saumitre kuruṣva vacanam mama
17. raghu-nandana saumitre tatra vijane kakṣe enām
visṛjya śīghram āgaccha mama vacanam kuruṣva
17. There, Lakṣmaṇa, in a solitary area, having left her, return quickly, O son of Sumitrā; obey my command.
न चास्मि प्रतिवक्तव्यः सीतां प्रति कथं चन ।
अप्रीतिः परमा मह्यं भवेत्तु प्रतिवारिते ॥१८॥
18. na cāsmi prativaktavyaḥ sītāṃ prati kathaṃ cana ,
aprītiḥ paramā mahyaṃ bhavettu prativārite.
18. na ca asmi prativaktavyaḥ sītām prati katham
cana aprītiḥ paramā mahyam bhavet tu prativārite
18. sītām prati katham cana na ca asmi prativaktavyaḥ
prativārite tu mahyam paramā aprītiḥ bhavet
18. And I am not to be questioned in any way concerning Sītā. Great displeasure would arise for me if my command were to be opposed.
शापिताश्च मया यूयं भुजाभ्यां जीवितेन च ।
ये मां वाक्यान्तरे ब्रूयुरनुनेतुं कथं चन ॥१९॥
19. śāpitāśca mayā yūyaṃ bhujābhyāṃ jīvitena ca ,
ye māṃ vākyāntare brūyuranunetuṃ kathaṃ cana.
19. śāpitāḥ ca mayā yūyam bhujābhyām jīvitena ca |
ye mām vākyāntare brūyuḥ anunetum katham cana
19. mayā yūyam bhujābhyām jīvitena ca śāpitāḥ ca
ye mām vākyāntare anunetum katham cana brūyuḥ
19. I have put you all under oath by my arms and by my life: if anyone were to speak to me again, attempting to persuade me otherwise, it shall not happen by any means.
मानयन्तु भवन्तो मां यदि मच्छासने स्थिताः ।
इतो ऽद्य नीयतां सीता कुरुष्व वचनं मम ॥२०॥
20. mānayantu bhavanto māṃ yadi macchāsane sthitāḥ ,
ito'dya nīyatāṃ sītā kuruṣva vacanaṃ mama.
20. mānayantu bhavantaḥ mām yadi matśāsane sthitāḥ
| itaḥ adya nīyatām sītā kuruṣva vacanam mama
20. yadi bhavantaḥ matśāsane sthitāḥ mām mānayantu
adya itaḥ sītā nīyatām mama vacanam kuruṣva
20. If you truly abide by my command, then honor me. Let Sita be taken from here today. Fulfill my word.
पूर्वमुक्तो ऽहमनया गङ्गातीरे महाश्रमान् ।
पश्येयमिति तस्याश्च कामः संवर्त्यतामयम् ॥२१॥
21. pūrvamukto'hamanayā gaṅgātīre mahāśramān ,
paśyeyamiti tasyāśca kāmaḥ saṃvartyatāmayam.
21. pūrvam uktaḥ aham anayā gaṅgātīre mahāśramān |
paśyeyam iti tasyāḥ ca kāmaḥ saṃvartyatām ayam
21. anayā pūrvam aham uktaḥ,
"gaṅgātīre mahāśramān paśyeyam" iti tasyāḥ ayam kāmaḥ ca saṃvartyatām
21. She previously told me, 'I wish to see the great hermitages on the bank of the Ganga.' So, let this desire of hers be fulfilled.
एवमुक्त्वा तु काकुत्स्थो बाष्पेण पिहितेक्षणः ।
प्रविवेश स धर्मात्मा भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥२२॥
22. evamuktvā tu kākutstho bāṣpeṇa pihitekṣaṇaḥ ,
praviveśa sa dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ.
22. evam uktvā tu kākutsthaḥ bāṣpeṇa pihitekṣaṇaḥ |
praviveśa saḥ dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ
22. kākutsthaḥ tu evam uktvā,
bāṣpeṇa pihitekṣaṇaḥ,
saḥ dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ praviveśa
22. Having spoken thus, Rama, the descendant of Kakutstha, whose eyes were veiled by tears, that individual of righteous (dharma) disposition, entered, accompanied by his brothers.
