ततः समुत्थितः काल्यमास्थाय स्यन्दनोत्तमम् ।
प्रययौ भरतः शीघ्रं रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥१॥

1. Then, having risen early in the morning, Bharata quickly set out, mounting his excellent chariot, driven by his strong desire to see Rama.
अग्रतः प्रययुस्तस्य सर्वे मन्त्रिपुरोधसः ।
अधिरुह्य हयैर्युक्तान् रथान् सूर्यरथोपमान् ॥२॥
2. agrataḥ prayayustasya sarve mantripurodhasaḥ ,
adhiruhya hayairyuktān rathān sūryarathopamān.

2. In front of him, all his ministers and chief priests proceeded, having mounted chariots drawn by horses and resembling the sun's chariot.
नवनागसहस्राणि कल्पितानि यथाविधि ।
अन्वयुर्भरतं यान्तमिक्ष्वाकु कुलनन्दनम् ॥३॥
3. navanāgasahasrāṇi kalpitāni yathāvidhi ,
anvayurbharataṃ yāntamikṣvāku kulanandanam.

3. Nine thousand elephants, duly prepared, followed Bharata, the delight of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, as he proceeded.
षष्ठी रथसहस्राणि धन्विनो विविधायुधाः ।
अन्वयुर्भरतं यान्तं राजपुत्रं यशस्विनम् ॥४॥
4. ṣaṣṭhī rathasahasrāṇi dhanvino vividhāyudhāḥ ,
anvayurbharataṃ yāntaṃ rājaputraṃ yaśasvinam.

4. Sixty thousand chariots, along with archers equipped with various weapons, followed Bharata, the glorious prince, as he proceeded.
शतं सहस्राण्यश्वानां समारूढानि राघवम् ।
अन्वयुर्भरतं यान्तं राजपुत्रं यशस्विनम् ॥५॥
5. śataṃ sahasrāṇyaśvānāṃ samārūḍhāni rāghavam ,
anvayurbharataṃ yāntaṃ rājaputraṃ yaśasvinam.

5. A hundred thousand mounted horses followed Bharata, the glorious prince, as he went towards Rāghava.
कैकेयी च सुमित्रा च कौसल्या च यशस्विनी ।
रामानयनसंहृष्टा ययुर्यानेन भास्वता ॥६॥
6. kaikeyī ca sumitrā ca kausalyā ca yaśasvinī ,
rāmānayanasaṃhṛṣṭā yayuryānena bhāsvatā.

rāma-ānayana-saṃhṛṣṭāḥ yayuḥ yānena bhāsvatā
6. kaikeyī ca sumitrā ca yaśasvinī kausalyā ca

6. Kaikeyī, Sumitrā, and the glorious Kausalyā, overjoyed at the bringing back of Rāma, went by a shining vehicle.
प्रयाताश्चार्यसंघाता रामं द्रष्टुं सलक्ष्मणम् ।
तस्यैव च कथाश्चित्राः कुर्वाणा हृष्टमानसाः ॥७॥
7. prayātāścāryasaṃghātā rāmaṃ draṣṭuṃ salakṣmaṇam ,
tasyaiva ca kathāścitrāḥ kurvāṇā hṛṣṭamānasāḥ.
7. prayātāḥ ca ārya-saṃghātāḥ rāmam draṣṭum sa-lakṣmaṇam
tasya eva ca kathāḥ citrāḥ kurvāṇāḥ hṛṣṭa-mānasāḥ
7. ca ārya-saṃghātāḥ rāmam sa-lakṣmaṇam draṣṭum prayātāḥ
ca tasya eva citrāḥ kathāḥ kurvāṇāḥ hṛṣṭa-mānasāḥ
7. And crowds of noble people set out to see Rāma with Lakṣmaṇa, narrating various wonderful stories about him with joyful hearts.
मेघश्यामं महाबाहुं स्थिरसत्त्वं दृढव्रतम् ।
कदा द्रक्ष्यामहे रामं जगतः शोकनाशनम् ॥८॥
8. meghaśyāmaṃ mahābāhuṃ sthirasattvaṃ dṛḍhavratam ,
kadā drakṣyāmahe rāmaṃ jagataḥ śokanāśanam.
8. megha-śyāmam mahā-bāhum sthira-sattvam dṛḍha-vratam
kadā drakṣyāmahe rāmam jagataḥ śoka-nāśanam
8. kadā drakṣyāmahe rāmam megha-śyāmam mahā-bāhum
sthira-sattvam dṛḍha-vratam jagataḥ śoka-nāśanam
8. When shall we see Rāma, who is dark like a cloud, mighty-armed, resolute in nature, firm in his vows, and the destroyer of the world's sorrow?
दृष्ट एव हि नः शोकमपनेष्यति राघवः ।
तमः सर्वस्य लोकस्य समुद्यन्निव भास्करः ॥९॥
9. dṛṣṭa eva hi naḥ śokamapaneṣyati rāghavaḥ ,
tamaḥ sarvasya lokasya samudyanniva bhāskaraḥ.
9. dṛṣṭaḥ eva hi naḥ śokam apaneṣyati rāghavaḥ
tamaḥ sarvasya lokasya samudyān iva bhāskaraḥ
9. rāghavaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ eva hi naḥ śokam apaneṣyati,
samudyān bhāskaraḥ sarvasya lokasya tamaḥ iva
9. Indeed, as soon as Rāghava is seen, he will remove our sorrow, just as the rising sun dispels the darkness of the entire world.
इत्येवं कथयन्तस्ते संप्रहृष्टाः कथाः शुभाः ।
परिष्वजानाश्चान्योन्यं ययुर्नागरिकास्तदा ॥१०॥
10. ityevaṃ kathayantaste saṃprahṛṣṭāḥ kathāḥ śubhāḥ ,
pariṣvajānāścānyonyaṃ yayurnāgarikāstadā.
10. iti evam kathayantaḥ te samprahṛṣṭāḥ kathāḥ śubhāḥ
pariṣvajānāḥ ca anyonyam yayuḥ nāgarikāḥ tadā
10. te nāgarikāḥ iti evam śubhāḥ kathāḥ kathayantaḥ
samprahṛṣṭāḥ ca anyonyam pariṣvajānāḥ tadā yayuḥ
10. Thus conversing, filled with great joy, the citizens exchanged auspicious tales, and embracing each other, they then proceeded on their way.
ये च तत्रापरे सर्वे संमता ये च नैगमाः ।
रामं प्रति ययुर्हृष्टाः सर्वाः प्रकृतयस्तदा ॥११॥
11. ye ca tatrāpare sarve saṃmatā ye ca naigamāḥ ,
rāmaṃ prati yayurhṛṣṭāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayastadā.
11. ye ca tatra apare sarve saṃmatāḥ ye ca naigamāḥ
rāmam prati yayuḥ hṛṣṭāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ tadā
11. ca ye apare tatra sarve saṃmatāḥ ye ca naigamāḥ,
sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ hṛṣṭāḥ tadā rāmam prati yayuḥ
11. And all the other respected people there, and the merchants – indeed, all the citizens (prakṛti) – then went, delighted, towards Rāma.
मणि काराश्च ये के चित् कुम्भकाराश्च शोभनाः ।
सूत्रकर्मकृतश्चैव ये च शस्त्रोपजीविनः ॥१२॥
12. maṇi kārāśca ye ke cit kumbhakārāśca śobhanāḥ ,
sūtrakarmakṛtaścaiva ye ca śastropajīvinaḥ.
12. maṇi kārāḥ ca ye ke cit kumbha kārāḥ ca śobhanāḥ
sūtra karma kṛtaḥ ca eva ye ca śastra upajīvinaḥ
12. ye ca ke cit maṇi kārāḥ ca śobhanāḥ kumbha kārāḥ
ca eva sūtra karma kṛtaḥ ca ye śastra upajīvinaḥ
12. And whoever were jewelers, and the excellent potters; and also those who work with thread, and those who subsist by weapons.
मायूरकाः क्राकचिका रोचका वेधकास्तथा ।
दन्तकाराः सुधाकारास्तथा गन्धोपजीविनः ॥१३॥
13. māyūrakāḥ krākacikā rocakā vedhakāstathā ,
dantakārāḥ sudhākārāstathā gandhopajīvinaḥ.
13. māyūrakāḥ krākacikāḥ rocakāḥ vedhakāḥ tathā
dantakārāḥ sudhākārāḥ tathā gandhopajīvinaḥ
13. māyūrakāḥ krākacikāḥ rocakāḥ vedhakāḥ tathā

13. Peacock keepers, sawyers, dyers, and piercers; ivory workers, plasterers, and also perfumers.
सुवर्णकाराः प्रख्यातास्तथा कम्बलधावकाः ।
स्नापकाच्छादका वैद्या धूपकाः शौण्डिकास्तथा ॥१४॥
14. suvarṇakārāḥ prakhyātāstathā kambaladhāvakāḥ ,
snāpakācchādakā vaidyā dhūpakāḥ śauṇḍikāstathā.

snāpakācchādakāḥ vaidyāḥ dhūpakāḥ śauṇḍikāḥ tathā

14. Famous goldsmiths, and also blanket washers; bath attendants and clothiers, physicians, incense makers, and liquor sellers.
रजकास्तुन्नवायाश्च ग्रामघोषमहत्तराः ।
शैलूषाश्च सह स्त्रीभिर्यान्ति कैवर्तकास्तथा ॥१५॥
15. rajakāstunnavāyāśca grāmaghoṣamahattarāḥ ,
śailūṣāśca saha strībhiryānti kaivartakāstathā.
15. rajakāḥ tunnāvāyāḥ ca grāmaghoṣamahattarāḥ
śailūṣāḥ ca saha strībhiḥ yānti kaivartakāḥ tathā
15. rajakāḥ tunnāvāyāḥ ca grāmaghoṣamahattarāḥ
śailūṣāḥ ca strībhiḥ saha kaivartakāḥ tathā yānti
15. Washermen, tailors, and the prominent figures from villages and cowherd communities; actors, along with women, and also fishermen, are going.
समाहिता वेदविदो ब्राह्मणा वृत्तसंमताः ।
गोरथैर्भरतं यान्तमनुजग्मुः सहस्रशः ॥१६॥
16. samāhitā vedavido brāhmaṇā vṛttasaṃmatāḥ ,
gorathairbharataṃ yāntamanujagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ.
16. samāhitāḥ vedavidaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ vṛttasaṃmatāḥ
gorathaiḥ bharatam yāntam anujagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ
16. sahasraśaḥ samāhitāḥ vedavidaḥ vṛttasaṃmatāḥ
brāhmaṇāḥ gorathaiḥ yāntam bharatam anujagmuḥ
16. Thousands of composed Brahmins, knowledgeable in the Vedas and esteemed for their virtuous conduct, followed Bharata as he traveled by bullock carts.
सुवेषाः शुद्धवसनास्ताम्रमृष्टानुलेपनाः ।
सर्वे ते विविधैर्यानैः शनैर्भरतमन्वयुः ॥१७॥
17. suveṣāḥ śuddhavasanāstāmramṛṣṭānulepanāḥ ,
sarve te vividhairyānaiḥ śanairbharatamanvayuḥ.
17. suveṣāḥ śuddhavasanāḥ tāmramṛṣṭānulepanāḥ sarve
te vividhaiḥ yānaiḥ śanaiḥ bharatam anvayuḥ
17. sarve te suveṣāḥ śuddhavasanāḥ tāmramṛṣṭānulepanāḥ
vividhaiḥ yānaiḥ śanaiḥ bharatam anvayuḥ
17. All of them, well-dressed, in clean garments, and adorned with polished, copper-colored unguents, slowly followed Bharata in their various conveyances.
प्रहृष्टमुदिता सेना सान्वयात् कैकयीसुतम् ।
व्यवतिष्ठत सा सेना भरतस्यानुयायिनी ॥१८॥
18. prahṛṣṭamuditā senā sānvayāt kaikayīsutam ,
vyavatiṣṭhata sā senā bharatasyānuyāyinī.
18. prahrṛṣṭamuditā senā sā anvayāt kaikeyīsutam
vyavatiṣṭhata sā senā bharatasya anuyāyinī
18. prahrṛṣṭamuditā senā kaikeyīsutam anvayāt
sā senā bharatasya anuyāyinī vyavatiṣṭhata
18. The army, full of joy and delight, followed Kaikeyi's son (Bharata). That army positioned itself as Bharata's retinue.
निरीक्ष्यानुगतां सेनां तां च गङ्गां शिवोदकाम् ।
भरतः सचिवान् सर्वानब्रवीद्वाक्यकोविदः ॥१९॥
19. nirīkṣyānugatāṃ senāṃ tāṃ ca gaṅgāṃ śivodakām ,
bharataḥ sacivān sarvānabravīdvākyakovidaḥ.
19. nirīkṣya anugatām senām tām ca gaṅgām śivodakām
bharataḥ sacivān sarvān abravīt vākyakovidaḥ
19. vākyakovidaḥ bharataḥ anugatām senām tām ca
śivodakām gaṅgām nirīkṣya sarvān sacivān abravīt
19. Having observed the accompanying army and the Ganga river with its auspicious waters, Bharata, skilled in eloquence, addressed all his ministers.
निवेशयत मे सैन्यमभिप्रायेण सर्वशः ।
विश्रान्तः प्रतरिष्यामः श्व इदानीं महानदीम् ॥२०॥
20. niveśayata me sainyamabhiprāyeṇa sarvaśaḥ ,
viśrāntaḥ pratariṣyāmaḥ śva idānīṃ mahānadīm.
20. niveśayata me sainyam abhiprāyeṇa sarvaśaḥ
viśrāntaḥ pratariṣyāmaḥ śvaḥ idānīm mahānadīm
20. sarvaśaḥ abhiprāyeṇa me sainyam niveśayata
viśrāntaḥ śvaḥ idānīm mahānadīm pratariṣyāmaḥ
20. Encamp my army thoroughly as per my instruction. After we have rested, we shall cross the great river tomorrow.
दातुं च तावदिच्छामि स्वर्गतस्य महीपतेः ।
और्ध्वदेह निमित्तार्थमवतीर्योदकं नदीम् ॥२१॥
21. dātuṃ ca tāvadicchāmi svargatasya mahīpateḥ ,
aurdhvadeha nimittārthamavatīryodakaṃ nadīm.
21. dātum ca tāvat icchāmi svargatasya mahīpateḥ
aurdhvadeha nimittārtham avatīrya udakam nadīm
21. ca tāvat nadīm avatīrya udakam svargatasya
mahīpateḥ aurdhvadeha nimittārtham dātum icchāmi
21. And indeed, I wish to descend to the river and offer water for the purpose of the post-mortem rites (aurdhvadeha) of the deceased king.
तस्यैवं ब्रुवतो ऽमात्यास्तथेत्युक्त्वा समाहिताः ।
न्यवेशयंस्तांश्छन्देन स्वेन स्वेन पृथक्पृथक् ॥२२॥
22. tasyaivaṃ bruvato'mātyāstathetyuktvā samāhitāḥ ,
nyaveśayaṃstāṃśchandena svena svena pṛthakpṛthak.
22. tasya evam bruvataḥ amātyāḥ tathā iti uktvā samāhitāḥ
nyaveśayan tān chandena svena svena pṛthak pṛthak
22. tasya evam bruvataḥ samāhitāḥ amātyāḥ tathā iti uktvā
tān svena svena chandena pṛthak pṛthak nyaveśayan
22. To him speaking thus, his attentive ministers, having agreed by saying 'So be it', settled them separately, each according to their own preference.
निवेश्य गङ्गामनु तां महानदीं चमूं विधानैः परिबर्ह शोभिनीम् ।
उवास रामस्य तदा महात्मनो विचिन्तयानो भरतो निवर्तनम् ॥२३॥
23. niveśya gaṅgāmanu tāṃ mahānadīṃ camūṃ vidhānaiḥ paribarha śobhinīm ,
uvāsa rāmasya tadā mahātmano vicintayāno bharato nivartanam.
23. niveśya gaṅgām anu tām mahānadīm
camūm vidhānaiḥ paribarha śobhinīm
uvāsa rāmasya tadā mahātmanaḥ
vicintayānaḥ bharataḥ nivartanam

rāmasya nivartanam vicintayānaḥ uvāsa
23. After encamping the army, which was splendid with its provisions and arrangements, along that great river Ganga, the great-souled (mahātman) Bharata then stayed there, contemplating Rama's return.
