तस्यालयवरिष्ठस्य मध्ये विपुलमायतम् ।
ददर्श भवनश्रेष्ठं हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ॥१॥
1. tasyālayavariṣṭhasya madhye vipulamāyatam ,

1. Hanumān, the son of Māruta (Vāyu), saw a large, spacious, and most excellent building within that best of dwellings.
अर्धयोजनविस्तीर्णमायतं योजनं हि तत् ।
भवनं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य बहुप्रासादसंकुलम् ॥२॥
2. ardhayojanavistīrṇamāyataṃ yojanaṃ hi tat ,
bhavanaṃ rākṣasendrasya bahuprāsādasaṃkulam.

2. That palace of the king of rākṣasas (demons) was indeed half a yojana wide and a full yojana long, and it was filled with many mansions.
मार्गमाणस्तु वैदेहीं सीतामायतलोचनाम् ।
सर्वतः परिचक्राम हनूमानरिसूदनः ॥३॥
3. mārgamāṇastu vaidehīṃ sītāmāyatalocanām ,
sarvataḥ paricakrāma hanūmānarisūdanaḥ.
3. mārgamāṇaḥ tu vaidehīm sītām āyatilocanām
sarvataḥ paricakrāma hanumān arisūdanaḥ

3. And Hanumān, the slayer of enemies, searching for Sītā (Vaidehī), who had beautiful long eyes, wandered all around (the palace).
चतुर्विषाणैर्द्विरदैस्त्रिविषाणैस्तथैव च ।
परिक्षिप्तमसंबाधं रक्ष्यमाणमुदायुधैः ॥४॥
4. caturviṣāṇairdviradaistriviṣāṇaistathaiva ca ,
parikṣiptamasaṃbādhaṃ rakṣyamāṇamudāyudhaiḥ.

4. (The dwelling was) surrounded by four-tusked elephants, and also by three-tusked (elephants), it was unobstructed and guarded by warriors with upraised weapons.
राक्षसीभिश्च पत्नीभी रावणस्य निवेशनम् ।
आहृताभिश्च विक्रम्य राजकन्याभिरावृतम् ॥५॥
5. rākṣasībhiśca patnībhī rāvaṇasya niveśanam ,
āhṛtābhiśca vikramya rājakanyābhirāvṛtam.

5. And Rāvaṇa's dwelling was surrounded by female rākṣasas (demons), his wives, and also by royal princesses brought there by force (after conquest).
तन्नक्रमकराकीर्णं तिमिंगिलझषाकुलम् ।
वायुवेगसमाधूतं पन्नगैरिव सागरम् ॥६॥
6. tannakramakarākīrṇaṃ timiṃgilajhaṣākulam ,
vāyuvegasamādhūtaṃ pannagairiva sāgaram.
6. tat nakramakarākīrṇam timingilajhaṣākulam
vāyuvegasamādhūtam pannagaiḥ iva sāgaram

6. That (city or palace) was like an ocean, teeming with crocodiles and makaras, agitated by great whales and fish, and disturbed by the force of wind, as an ocean is by its serpents.
या हि वैश्वरणे लक्ष्मीर्या चेन्द्रे हरिवाहने ।
सा रावणगृहे सर्वा नित्यमेवानपायिनी ॥७॥
7. yā hi vaiśvaraṇe lakṣmīryā cendre harivāhane ,
sā rāvaṇagṛhe sarvā nityamevānapāyinī.
7. yā hi vaiśvaraṇe lakṣmīḥ yā ca indre harivāhane
sā rāvaṇagṛhe sarvā nityam eva anapāyinī
7. yā lakṣmīḥ hi vaiśvaraṇe yā ca harivāhane

7. The prosperity (lakṣmī) that is found with Kubera and that which is with Indra, the rider of golden horses – all that prosperity is present in Rāvaṇa's house, constant and unfailing.
या च राज्ञः कुबेरस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य च ।
तादृशी तद्विशिष्टा वा ऋद्धी रक्षो गृहेष्विह ॥८॥
8. yā ca rājñaḥ kuberasya yamasya varuṇasya ca ,
tādṛśī tadviśiṣṭā vā ṛddhī rakṣo gṛheṣviha.
8. yā ca rājñaḥ kuberasya yamasya varuṇasya ca
tādṛśī tat viśiṣṭā vā ṛddhī rakṣaḥ gṛheṣu iha
8. yā ṛddhī ca rājñaḥ kuberasya yamasya varuṇasya
ca tādṛśī vā tat viśiṣṭā iha rakṣaḥ gṛheṣu
8. And the prosperity that belongs to King Kubera, and to Yama, and to Varuṇa – prosperity of that very kind, or even superior to it, is found here in the dwellings of the rākṣasas.
तस्य हर्म्यस्य मध्यस्थं वेश्म चान्यत् सुनिर्मितम् ।
बहुनिर्यूह संकीर्णं ददर्श पवनात्मजः ॥९॥
9. tasya harmyasya madhyasthaṃ veśma cānyat sunirmitam ,
bahuniryūha saṃkīrṇaṃ dadarśa pavanātmajaḥ.

9. The son of the wind (pavanātmaja) also saw another well-constructed mansion situated in the center of that palace, crowded with many pinnacles.
ब्रह्मणो ऽर्थे कृतं दिव्यं दिवि यद्विश्वकर्मणा ।
विमानं पुष्पकं नाम सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् ॥१०॥
10. brahmaṇo'rthe kṛtaṃ divyaṃ divi yadviśvakarmaṇā ,
vimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ nāma sarvaratnavibhūṣitam.
10. brahmaṇaḥ arthe kṛtam divyam divi yat viśvakarmaṇā
vimānam puṣpakam nāma sarvaratnavibhūṣitam
10. yat puṣpakam nāma vimānam brahmaṇaḥ arthe divi
viśvakarmaṇā divyam kṛtam sarvaratnavibhūṣitam
10. The celestial chariot named Puṣpaka, which was divinely crafted in the heavens by Viśvakarmā for the sake of Brahmā, was adorned with all kinds of jewels.
परेण तपसा लेभे यत् कुबेरः पितामहात् ।
कुबेरमोजसा जित्वा लेभे तद् राक्षसेश्वरः ॥११॥
11. pareṇa tapasā lebhe yat kuberaḥ pitāmahāt ,
kuberamojasā jitvā lebhe tad rākṣaseśvaraḥ.

kuberam ojasā jitvā lebhe tat rākṣaseśvaraḥ
11. yat kuberaḥ pareṇa tapasā pitāmahāt lebhe,

11. That which Kubera obtained from the great-grandfather (Brahmā) through immense asceticism (tapas), that same chariot the lord of rākṣasas obtained, having conquered Kubera by his might.
ईहा मृगसमायुक्तैः कार्यस्वरहिरण्मयैः ।
सुकृतैराचितं स्तम्भैः प्रदीप्तमिव च श्रिया ॥१२॥
12. īhā mṛgasamāyuktaiḥ kāryasvarahiraṇmayaiḥ ,
sukṛtairācitaṃ stambhaiḥ pradīptamiva ca śriyā.

12. It was filled with well-crafted columns adorned with figures of imaginary animals and golden images, and it shone as if ablaze with splendor.
मेरुमन्दरसंकाशैरुल्लिखद्भिरिवाम्बरम् ।
कूटागारैः शुभाकारैः सर्वतः समलंकृतम् ॥१३॥
13. merumandarasaṃkāśairullikhadbhirivāmbaram ,
kūṭāgāraiḥ śubhākāraiḥ sarvataḥ samalaṃkṛtam.
13. merumandarasamkāśaiḥ ullikhadbhiḥ iva ambaram
kūṭāgāraiḥ śubhākāraiḥ sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtam
13. [तत् विमानम्] sarvataḥ merumandarasamkāśaiḥ ambaram iva

13. It was adorned everywhere with multi-storied pavilions of beautiful form, resembling Mount Meru and Mandara, as if scratching the sky.
ज्वलनार्कप्रतीकाशं सुकृतं विश्वकर्मणा ।
हेमसोपानसंयुक्तं चारुप्रवरवेदिकम् ॥१४॥
14. jvalanārkapratīkāśaṃ sukṛtaṃ viśvakarmaṇā ,
hemasopānasaṃyuktaṃ cārupravaravedikam.

14. It was radiant like fire and the sun, skillfully crafted by Viśvakarmā, adorned with golden steps and featuring splendid, beautiful altars.
जालवातायनैर्युक्तं काञ्चनैः स्थाटिकैरपि ।
इन्द्रनीलमहानीलमणिप्रवरवेदिकम् ।
विमानं पुष्पकं दिव्यमारुरोह महाकपिः ॥१५॥
15. jālavātāyanairyuktaṃ kāñcanaiḥ sthāṭikairapi ,
indranīlamahānīlamaṇipravaravedikam ,
vimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ divyamāruroha mahākapiḥ.

15. It was equipped with netted windows, both golden and crystal, and featured splendid altars adorned with sapphires and great sapphires. The great monkey then ascended that divine aerial chariot, the Puṣpaka.
तत्रस्थः स तदा गन्धं पानभक्ष्यान्नसंभवम् ।
दिव्यं संमूर्छितं जिघ्रन् रूपवन्तमिवानिलम् ॥१६॥
16. tatrasthaḥ sa tadā gandhaṃ pānabhakṣyānnasaṃbhavam ,
divyaṃ saṃmūrchitaṃ jighran rūpavantamivānilam.
16. tatrasthaḥ sa tadā gandham pānabhakṣyānnasaṃbhavam
divyam saṃmūrchitam jighran rūpavantam iva anilam
16. saḥ tatrasthaḥ tadā pānabhakṣyānnasaṃbhavam divyam

16. Being there, he then smelled a divine, intensely diffused fragrance arising from drinks, eatables, and food, perceiving it as if it were air endowed with a visible form.
स गन्धस्तं महासत्त्वं बन्धुर्बन्धुमिवोत्तमम् ।
इत एहीत्युवाचेव तत्र यत्र स रावणः ॥१७॥
17. sa gandhastaṃ mahāsattvaṃ bandhurbandhumivottamam ,
ita ehītyuvāceva tatra yatra sa rāvaṇaḥ.
17. saḥ gandhaḥ tam mahāsattvam bandhuḥ bandhum iva
uttamam itaḥ ehi iti uvāca iva tatra yatra saḥ rāvaṇaḥ
17. saḥ gandhaḥ bandhuḥ uttamam bandhum iva itaḥ ehi iti
iva uvāca tam mahāsattvam tatra yatra saḥ rāvaṇaḥ
17. That fragrance, like an excellent friend guiding another friend, seemed to say, 'Come here!' and drew that great being (Hanuman) to the place where Rāvaṇa was.
ततस्तां प्रस्थितः शालां ददर्श महतीं शुभाम् ।
रावणस्य मनःकान्तां कान्तामिव वरस्त्रियम् ॥१८॥
18. tatastāṃ prasthitaḥ śālāṃ dadarśa mahatīṃ śubhām ,
rāvaṇasya manaḥkāntāṃ kāntāmiva varastriyam.
18. tataḥ tām prasthitaḥ śālām dadarśa mahatīm śubhām
| rāvaṇasya manaḥ-kāntām kāntām iva vara-striyam
18. tataḥ prasthitaḥ tām mahatīm śubhām rāvaṇasya

18. Having set out from there, he saw that great, beautiful hall, which was as beloved to Rāvaṇa's heart as an excellent, charming woman.
मणिसोपानविकृतां हेमजालविराजिताम् ।
स्फाटिकैरावृततलां दन्तान्तरितरूपिकाम् ॥१९॥
19. maṇisopānavikṛtāṃ hemajālavirājitām ,
sphāṭikairāvṛtatalāṃ dantāntaritarūpikām.
19. maṇi-sopāna-vikṛtām hema-jāla-virājitām |
sphāṭikaiḥ āvṛtta-talām danta-antarita-rūpikām
19. maṇi-sopāna-vikṛtām hema-jāla-virājitām

19. It was adorned with stairs made of jewels, splendid with golden trellises, its floor covered with crystals, and its figures inlaid with ivory.
मुक्ताभिश्च प्रवालैश्च रूप्यचामीकरैरपि ।
विभूषितां मणिस्तम्भैः सुबहुस्तम्भभूषिताम् ॥२०॥
20. muktābhiśca pravālaiśca rūpyacāmīkarairapi ,
vibhūṣitāṃ maṇistambhaiḥ subahustambhabhūṣitām.
20. muktābhiḥ ca pravālaiḥ ca rūpya-cāmīkaraiḥ api |
vibhūṣitām maṇi-stambhaiḥ su-bahu-stambha-bhūṣitām
20. muktābhiḥ ca pravālaiḥ ca rūpya-cāmīkaraiḥ api
maṇi-stambhaiḥ su-bahu-stambha-bhūṣitām vibhūṣitām
20. It was also adorned with pearls and corals, with silver and gold, embellished with jeweled pillars, and further decorated with a great many pillars.
समैरृजुभिरत्युच्चैः समन्तात् सुविभूषितैः ।
स्तम्भैः पक्षैरिवात्युच्चैर्दिवं संप्रस्थितामिव ॥२१॥
21. samairṛjubhiratyuccaiḥ samantāt suvibhūṣitaiḥ ,
stambhaiḥ pakṣairivātyuccairdivaṃ saṃprasthitāmiva.
21. samaiḥ ṛjubhiḥ ati-uccaiḥ samantāt su-vibhūṣitaiḥ |
stambhaiḥ pakṣaiḥ iva ati-uccaiḥ divam samprasthitām iva

stambhaiḥ ati-uccaiḥ pakṣaiḥ iva divam samprasthitām iva
21. It was splendidly adorned on all sides with straight, perfectly even, and exceedingly tall pillars, which, like very tall wings, seemed to have risen up to the sky.
महत्या कुथयास्त्रीणं पृथिवीलक्षणाङ्कया ।
पृथिवीमिव विस्तीर्णां सराष्ट्रगृहमालिनीम् ॥२२॥
22. mahatyā kuthayāstrīṇaṃ pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā ,
pṛthivīmiva vistīrṇāṃ sarāṣṭragṛhamālinīm.
22. mahatyā kuthayā āstīrṇām pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā
pṛthivīm iva vistīrṇām sarāṣṭragṛhamālinīm
22. mahatyā pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā kuthayā āstīrṇām

22. It was spread with a vast and splendid carpet, marked with the features of the earth. It was as expansive as the earth itself, adorned with a series of kingdoms and dwellings.
नादितां मत्तविहगैर्दिव्यगन्धाधिवासिताम् ।
परार्ध्यास्तरणोपेतां रक्षोऽधिपनिषेविताम् ॥२३॥
23. nāditāṃ mattavihagairdivyagandhādhivāsitām ,
parārdhyāstaraṇopetāṃ rakṣo'dhipaniṣevitām.
23. nāditām mattavihagaiḥ divyagandhādhivāsitām
parārdhyāstaraṇopetām rakṣo'dhipaniṣevitām
23. mattavihagaiḥ nāditām divyagandhādhivāsitām

23. It resounded with the calls of exhilarated birds, was permeated by divine fragrances, furnished with most excellent coverings, and frequented by the lord of the rakshasas.
धूम्रामगरुधूपेन विमलां हंसपाण्डुराम् ।
चित्रां पुष्पोपहारेण कल्माषीमिव सुप्रभाम् ॥२४॥
24. dhūmrāmagarudhūpena vimalāṃ haṃsapāṇḍurām ,
citrāṃ puṣpopahāreṇa kalmāṣīmiva suprabhām.
24. dhūmrām agurudhūpena vimalām haṃsapāṇḍurām
citrām puṣpopahāreṇa kalmāṣīm iva suprabhām
24. agurudhūpena dhūmrām vimalām haṃsapāṇḍurām

24. It was dusky from the smoke of aloe-wood incense, yet pure and whitish like a swan; variegated with flower offerings, shining splendidly like a spotted cow (kalmāṣī).
मनःसंह्लादजननीं वर्णस्यापि प्रसादिनीम् ।
तां शोकनाशिनीं दिव्यां श्रियः संजननीमिव ॥२५॥
25. manaḥsaṃhlādajananīṃ varṇasyāpi prasādinīm ,
tāṃ śokanāśinīṃ divyāṃ śriyaḥ saṃjananīmiva.
25. manaḥsaṃhlādajananīm varṇasya api prasādinīm
tām śokanāśinīm divyām śriyaḥ saṃjananīm iva
25. tām manaḥsaṃhlādajananīm varṇasya api prasādinīm
śokanāśinīm divyām śriyaḥ saṃjananīm iva
25. That object, which generated joy in the mind and even brightened one's complexion, destroyed sorrow, was divine, and appeared to be a generator of prosperity (śrī).
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थैस्तु पञ्च पञ्चभिरुत्तमैः ।
तर्पयामास मातेव तदा रावणपालिता ॥२६॥
26. indriyāṇīndriyārthaistu pañca pañcabhiruttamaiḥ ,
tarpayāmāsa māteva tadā rāvaṇapālitā.
26. indriyāṇi indriyārthaiḥ tu pañca pañcabhiḥ
uttamaiḥ | tarpayāmāsa mātā iva tadā rāvaṇapālitā
26. Then, the city, protected by Rāvaṇa, delighted the five senses with their five excellent corresponding sense objects, just as a mother nurtures her children.
स्वर्गो ऽयं देवलोको ऽयमिन्द्रस्येयं पुरी भवेत् ।
सिद्धिर्वेयं परा हि स्यादित्यमन्यत मारुतिः ॥२७॥
27. svargo'yaṃ devaloko'yamindrasyeyaṃ purī bhavet ,
siddhirveyaṃ parā hi syādityamanyata mārutiḥ.
27. svargaḥ ayam devalokaḥ ayam indrasya iyam purī bhavet
| siddhiḥ vai iyam parā hi syāt iti amanyata mārutiḥ
27. Māruti (Hanumān) pondered: 'This must be heaven, this must be the world of the gods, this must be Indra's city. Or perhaps, this is indeed a supreme accomplishment (siddhi).'
प्रध्यायत इवापश्यत् प्रदीपांस्तत्र काञ्चनान् ।
धूर्तानिव महाधूर्तैर्देवनेन पराजितान् ॥२८॥
28. pradhyāyata ivāpaśyat pradīpāṃstatra kāñcanān ,
dhūrtāniva mahādhūrtairdevanena parājitān.
28. pradhyāyata iva apaśyat pradīpān tatra kāñcanān
| dhūrtān iva mahādhūrtaiḥ devanena parājitān
28. As if in deep contemplation, he (Hanumān) observed there golden lamps, which appeared like gamblers defeated in a game of chance by more skilled gamblers.
दीपानां च प्रकाशेन तेजसा रावणस्य च ।
अर्चिर्भिर्भूषणानां च प्रदीप्तेत्यभ्यमन्यत ॥२९॥
29. dīpānāṃ ca prakāśena tejasā rāvaṇasya ca ,
arcirbhirbhūṣaṇānāṃ ca pradīptetyabhyamanyata.
29. dīpānām ca prakāśena tejasā rāvaṇasya ca |
arcirbhiḥ bhūṣaṇānām ca pradīptā iti abhyamanyata
29. He (Hanumān) therefore concluded that the place was brightly illuminated by the radiance of the lamps, by the splendor of Rāvaṇa himself, and by the shimmering of the ornaments.
ततो ऽपश्यत् कुथासीनं नानावर्णाम्बरस्रजम् ।
सहस्रं वरनारीणां नानावेषविभूषितम् ॥३०॥
30. tato'paśyat kuthāsīnaṃ nānāvarṇāmbarasrajam ,
sahasraṃ varanārīṇāṃ nānāveṣavibhūṣitam.
30. tataḥ apaśyat kuthā-āsīnam nānā-varṇa-ambara-srajam
| sahasram vara-nārīṇām nānā-veṣa-vibhūṣitam
30. tataḥ sahasram vara-nārīṇām kuthā-āsīnam
nānā-varṇa-ambara-srajam nānā-veṣa-vibhūṣitam apaśyat
30. Then [Hanuman] saw a thousand excellent women, seated on cushions, adorned with garlands and garments of various colors, and decorated with diverse costumes.
परिवृत्ते ऽर्धरात्रे तु पाननिद्रावशं गतम् ।
क्रीडित्वोपरतं रात्रौ सुष्वाप बलवत्तदा ॥३१॥

31. When midnight arrived, [he] had succumbed to the influence of drink and sleep. Having played and then ceased his activities during the night, he then slept soundly.
तत् प्रसुप्तं विरुरुचे निःशब्दान्तरभूषणम् ।
निःशब्दहंसभ्रमरं यथा पद्मवनं महत् ॥३२॥
32. tat prasuptaṃ viruruce niḥśabdāntarabhūṣaṇam ,
niḥśabdahaṃsabhramaraṃ yathā padmavanaṃ mahat.
32. tat prasuptam viruruce niḥ-śabda-antara-bhūṣaṇam |
niḥ-śabda-haṃsa-bhramaram yathā padma-vanam mahat
32. tat prasuptam niḥ-śabda-antara-bhūṣaṇam

32. That sleeping assembly shone, its inner ornaments now silent, and without the sound of geese or bees, just like a great lotus forest (is silent).
तासां संवृतदन्तानि मीलिताक्षाणि मारुतिः ।
अपश्यत् पद्मगन्धीनि वदनानि सुयोषिताम् ॥३३॥
33. tāsāṃ saṃvṛtadantāni mīlitākṣāṇi mārutiḥ ,
apaśyat padmagandhīni vadanāni suyoṣitām.

33. Maruti saw the faces of those beautiful women - faces with closed mouths (showing no teeth), closed eyes, and a fragrance like lotuses.
प्रबुद्धानीव पद्मानि तासां भूत्वा क्षपाक्षये ।
पुनःसंवृतपत्राणि रात्राविव बभुस्तदा ॥३४॥
34. prabuddhānīva padmāni tāsāṃ bhūtvā kṣapākṣaye ,
punaḥsaṃvṛtapatrāṇi rātrāviva babhustadā.

34. At dawn, their faces, which had been like blooming lotuses, then appeared like lotuses whose petals had closed again, as they do during the night.
इमानि मुखपद्मानि नियतं मत्तषट्पदाः ।
अम्बुजानीव फुल्लानि प्रार्थयन्ति पुनः पुनः ॥३५॥
35. imāni mukhapadmāni niyataṃ mattaṣaṭpadāḥ ,
ambujānīva phullāni prārthayanti punaḥ punaḥ.

35. Intoxicated bees constantly desire these lotus-faces again and again, just as they desire blooming lotuses.
इति वामन्यत श्रीमानुपपत्त्या महाकपिः ।
मेने हि गुणतस्तानि समानि सलिलोद्भवैः ॥३६॥
36. iti vāmanyata śrīmānupapattyā mahākapiḥ ,
mene hi guṇatastāni samāni salilodbhavaiḥ.

36. Thus, the glorious great monkey (mahākapi) reasoned by inference (upapattyā), for he considered those faces to be similar in qualities to lotuses (salilodbhavaiḥ).
सा तस्य शुशुभे शाला ताभिः स्त्रीभिर्विराजिता ।
शारदीव प्रसन्ना द्यौस्ताराभिरभिशोभिता ॥३७॥
37. sā tasya śuśubhe śālā tābhiḥ strībhirvirājitā ,
śāradīva prasannā dyaustārābhirabhiśobhitā.

śāradī iva prasannā dyauḥ tārābhiḥ abhiśobhitā

37. His hall, resplendent with those women, shone like a clear autumnal sky adorned with stars.
स च ताभिः परिवृतः शुशुभे राक्षसाधिपः ।
यथा ह्युडुपतिः श्रीमांस्ताराभिरभिसंवृतः ॥३८॥
38. sa ca tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ śuśubhe rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
yathā hyuḍupatiḥ śrīmāṃstārābhirabhisaṃvṛtaḥ.

38. And the lord of rākṣasas, surrounded by those women, shone splendidly, just like the glorious moon completely encircled by stars.
याश्च्यवन्ते ऽम्बरात्ताराः पुण्यशेषसमावृताः ।
इमास्ताः संगताः कृत्स्ना इति मेने हरिस्तदा ॥३९॥
39. yāścyavante'mbarāttārāḥ puṇyaśeṣasamāvṛtāḥ ,
imāstāḥ saṃgatāḥ kṛtsnā iti mene haristadā.
39. yāḥ cyavante ambarāt tārāḥ puṇyaśeṣasamāvṛtāḥ
imāḥ tāḥ saṃgatāḥ kṛtsnāḥ iti mene hariḥ tadā

39. Then Hanumān thought, 'These women are certainly those stars that descend from the sky, having exhausted most of their merit, and are now fully assembled here.'
ताराणामिव सुव्यक्तं महतीनां शुभार्चिषाम् ।
प्रभावर्णप्रसादाश्च विरेजुस्तत्र योषिताम् ॥४०॥
40. tārāṇāmiva suvyaktaṃ mahatīnāṃ śubhārciṣām ,
prabhāvarṇaprasādāśca virejustatra yoṣitām.

prabhāvarṇaprasādāḥ ca virejuḥ tatra yoṣitām

40. There, the splendor, complexions, and grace of the women shone very distinctly, just like those of magnificent stars with brilliant light.
व्यावृत्तगुरुपीनस्रक्प्रकीर्णवरभूषणाः ।
पानव्यायामकालेषु निद्रापहृतचेतसः ॥४१॥
41. vyāvṛttagurupīnasrakprakīrṇavarabhūṣaṇāḥ ,
pānavyāyāmakāleṣu nidrāpahṛtacetasaḥ.

41. These women, whose heavy, thick garlands had fallen off and whose splendid ornaments were scattered, had their consciousness taken away by sleep during times of drinking and vigorous activity.
व्यावृत्ततिलकाः काश्चित् काश्चिदुद्भ्रान्तनूपुराः ।
पार्श्वे गलितहाराश्च काश्चित् परमयोषितः ॥४२॥
42. vyāvṛttatilakāḥ kāścit kāścidudbhrāntanūpurāḥ ,
pārśve galitahārāśca kāścit paramayoṣitaḥ.

42. Some women had their tilaka marks askew, others had their anklets displaced. And some supremely beautiful women had their necklaces fallen to their sides.
मुखा हारवृताश्चान्याः काश्चित् प्रस्रस्तवाससः ।
व्याविद्धरशना दामाः किशोर्य इव वाहिताः ॥४३॥
43. mukhā hāravṛtāścānyāḥ kāścit prasrastavāsasaḥ ,
vyāviddharaśanā dāmāḥ kiśorya iva vāhitāḥ.
43. mukhāḥ hāravṛtāḥ ca anyāḥ kāścit prasrastavāsasaḥ

43. And others, some women had their faces covered by garlands, while some had their garments slipped off. These young women, with their girdles disarranged, appeared like fillies that have been ridden hard.
सुकुण्डलधराश्चान्या विच्छिन्नमृदितस्रजः ।
गजेन्द्रमृदिताः फुल्ला लता इव महावने ॥४४॥
44. sukuṇḍaladharāścānyā vicchinnamṛditasrajaḥ ,
gajendramṛditāḥ phullā latā iva mahāvane.

44. And still others, wearing beautiful earrings, had their garlands broken and crushed. They were like blossoming vines in a great forest, trampled by lordly elephants.
चन्द्रांशुकिरणाभाश्च हाराः कासां चिदुत्कटाः ।
हंसा इव बभुः सुप्ताः स्तनमध्येषु योषिताम् ॥४५॥
45. candrāṃśukiraṇābhāśca hārāḥ kāsāṃ cidutkaṭāḥ ,
haṃsā iva babhuḥ suptāḥ stanamadhyeṣu yoṣitām.
45. candrāṃśukiraṇābhāḥ ca hārāḥ kāsām cit utkaṭāḥ
haṃsāḥ iva babhuḥ suptāḥ stanmadhyeṣu yoṣitām

45. And the splendid necklaces of some women, gleaming like moonbeams, appeared like sleeping swans resting between their breasts.
अपरासां च वैदूर्याः कादम्बा इव पक्षिणः ।
हेमसूत्राणि चान्यासां चक्रवाका इवाभवन् ॥४६॥
46. aparāsāṃ ca vaidūryāḥ kādambā iva pakṣiṇaḥ ,
hemasūtrāṇi cānyāsāṃ cakravākā ivābhavan.

46. And for some, their lapis lazuli ornaments appeared like Kadamba birds, while for others, their golden necklaces resembled ruddy geese.
हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णाश्चक्रवाकोपशोभिताः ।
आपगा इव ता रेजुर्जघनैः पुलिनैरिव ॥४७॥
47. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāścakravākopaśobhitāḥ ,
āpagā iva tā rejurjaghanaiḥ pulinairiva.

āpagāḥ iva tāḥ rejuḥ jaghanaiḥ pulinaiḥ iva

47. Thronged with swan-like and karandava-like adornments, and graced by ruddy geese-like ornaments, those women shone like rivers, their hips resembling sandbanks.
किङ्किणीजालसंकाशास्ता हेमविपुलाम्बुजाः ।
भावग्राहा यशस्तीराः सुप्ता नद्य इवाबभुः ॥४८॥
48. kiṅkiṇījālasaṃkāśāstā hemavipulāmbujāḥ ,
bhāvagrāhā yaśastīrāḥ suptā nadya ivābabhuḥ.
48. kiṅkiṇījālasaṃkāśāḥ tāḥ hemavipulāmbujāḥ
bhāvagrāhāḥ yaśastīrāḥ suptāḥ nadyaḥ iva ababhuḥ

48. Those women, sparkling like networks of tiny bells, adorned with wide golden lotuses, having emotions like predatory water creatures and their renown as riverbanks, shone like dormant rivers.
मृदुष्वङ्गेषु कासां चित् कुचाग्रेषु च संस्थिताः ।
बभूवुर्भूषणानीव शुभा भूषणराजयः ॥४९॥
49. mṛduṣvaṅgeṣu kāsāṃ cit kucāgreṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ ,
babhūvurbhūṣaṇānīva śubhā bhūṣaṇarājayaḥ.
49. mṛduṣu aṅgeṣu kāsām cit kucāgreṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ
babhūvuḥ bhūṣaṇāni iva śubhāḥ bhūṣaṇarājayaḥ

49. On the soft limbs of some women, and also on their breast-tips, beautiful rows of ornaments were situated, appearing as perfect ornaments themselves.
अंशुकान्ताश्च कासां चिन्मुखमारुतकम्पिताः ।
उपर्युपरि वक्त्राणां व्याधूयन्ते पुनः पुनः ॥५०॥
50. aṃśukāntāśca kāsāṃ cinmukhamārutakampitāḥ ,
uparyupari vaktrāṇāṃ vyādhūyante punaḥ punaḥ.
50. aṃśukāntāḥ ca kāsām cit mukhamāruta kampitāḥ
upari upari vaktrāṇām vyādhūyante punaḥ punaḥ

50. And the fringes of the fine garments of some women, stirred by the breath from their mouths, fluttered repeatedly over their faces again and again.
ताः पाताका इवोद्धूताः पत्नीनां रुचिरप्रभाः ।
नानावर्णसुवर्णानां वक्त्रमूलेषु रेजिरे ॥५१॥
51. tāḥ pātākā ivoddhūtāḥ patnīnāṃ ruciraprabhāḥ ,
nānāvarṇasuvarṇānāṃ vaktramūleṣu rejire.
51. tāḥ pātākāḥ iva uddhūtāḥ patnīnām ruciraprabhāḥ
nānāvarṇasuvarṇānām vaktramūleṣu rejire

51. Those (fringes), waved aloft like banners, shone with beautiful radiance. Belonging to wives adorned with gold of various colors, they gleamed at the base of their faces.
ववल्गुश्चात्र कासां चित् कुण्डलानि शुभार्चिषाम् ।
मुखमारुतसंसर्गान्मन्दं मन्दं सुयोषिताम् ॥५२॥
52. vavalguścātra kāsāṃ cit kuṇḍalāni śubhārciṣām ,
mukhamārutasaṃsargānmandaṃ mandaṃ suyoṣitām.
52. vavalguḥ ca atra kāsām cit kuṇḍalāni śubhārciṣām
mukhamāruta-saṃsargāt mandam mandam suyoṣitām

52. And here, the brightly shining earrings of some beautiful women gently quivered due to contact with the breath from their mouths.
शर्करासवगन्धः स प्रकृत्या सुरभिः सुखः ।
तासां वदननिःश्वासः सिषेवे रावणं तदा ॥५३॥
53. śarkarāsavagandhaḥ sa prakṛtyā surabhiḥ sukhaḥ ,
tāsāṃ vadananiḥśvāsaḥ siṣeve rāvaṇaṃ tadā.
53. śarkarāsavagandhaḥ sa prakṛtyā surabhiḥ sukhaḥ
tāsām vadananiḥśvāsaḥ siṣeve rāvaṇam tadā

53. That exhalation from the mouths of those women, naturally fragrant, pleasant, and possessing the scent of sugarcane liquor, then gratified Rāvaṇa.
रावणाननशङ्काश्च काश्चिद् रावणयोषितः ।
मुखानि स्म सपत्नीनामुपाजिघ्रन्पुनः पुनः ॥५४॥
54. rāvaṇānanaśaṅkāśca kāścid rāvaṇayoṣitaḥ ,
mukhāni sma sapatnīnāmupājighranpunaḥ punaḥ.

mukhāni sma sapatnīnām upājighran punaḥ punaḥ
54. Some of Rāvaṇa's wives, experiencing apprehension regarding Rāvaṇa's countenance, repeatedly kissed the faces of their co-wives.
अत्यर्थं सक्तमनसो रावणे ता वरस्त्रियः ।
अस्वतन्त्राः सपत्नीनां प्रियमेवाचरंस्तदा ॥५५॥
55. atyarthaṃ saktamanaso rāvaṇe tā varastriyaḥ ,
asvatantrāḥ sapatnīnāṃ priyamevācaraṃstadā.
55. atyartham saktamanasaḥ rāvaṇe tāḥ varastriyaḥ
asvatantrāḥ sapatnīnām priyam eva ācaran tadā
55. Those splendid women, whose minds were exceedingly devoted to Rāvaṇa, being dependent, then behaved only in a manner agreeable to their co-wives.
बाहूनुपनिधायान्याः पारिहार्य विभूषिताः ।
अंशुकानि च रम्याणि प्रमदास्तत्र शिश्यिरे ॥५६॥
56. bāhūnupanidhāyānyāḥ pārihārya vibhūṣitāḥ ,
aṃśukāni ca ramyāṇi pramadāstatra śiśyire.
56. bāhūn upanidhāya anyāḥ pārihārya vibhūṣitāḥ
aṁśukāni ca ramyāṇi pramadāḥ tatra śiśyire
56. Other women, adorned with armlets and lovely garments, lay down there, having placed their arms (for rest or support).
अन्या वक्षसि चान्यस्यास्तस्याः का चित् पुनर्भुजम् ।
अपरा त्वङ्कमन्यस्यास्तस्याश्चाप्यपरा भुजौ ॥५७॥
57. anyā vakṣasi cānyasyāstasyāḥ kā cit punarbhujam ,
aparā tvaṅkamanyasyāstasyāścāpyaparā bhujau.
57. anyā vakṣasi ca anyasyāḥ tasyāḥ kācit punaḥ bhujam
aparā tu aṅkam anyasyāḥ tasyāḥ ca api aparā bhujau
57. One woman lay on the chest of another, while another lay on her arm. Yet another rested on the lap of a different woman, and still another on her two arms.
ऊरुपार्श्वकटीपृष्ठमन्योन्यस्य समाश्रिताः ।
परस्परनिविष्टाङ्ग्यो मदस्नेहवशानुगाः ॥५८॥
58. ūrupārśvakaṭīpṛṣṭhamanyonyasya samāśritāḥ ,
parasparaniviṣṭāṅgyo madasnehavaśānugāḥ.

58. With their thighs, sides, waists, and backs leaning against each other, their limbs intertwined, the women were under the sway of intoxication and affection.
अन्योन्यस्याङ्गसंस्पर्शात् प्रीयमाणाः सुमध्यमाः ।
एकीकृतभुजाः सर्वाः सुषुपुस्तत्र योषितः ॥५९॥
59. anyonyasyāṅgasaṃsparśāt prīyamāṇāḥ sumadhyamāḥ ,
ekīkṛtabhujāḥ sarvāḥ suṣupustatra yoṣitaḥ.

59. All the slender-waisted women, delighted by the touch of each other's bodies, their arms intertwined, slept there.
अन्योन्यभुजसूत्रेण स्त्रीमालाग्रथिता हि सा ।
मालेव ग्रथिता सूत्रे शुशुभे मत्तषट्पदा ॥६०॥
60. anyonyabhujasūtreṇa strīmālāgrathitā hi sā ,
māleva grathitā sūtre śuśubhe mattaṣaṭpadā.

60. Indeed, she (the group of women), with their arms forming a connecting thread, appeared like a garland of women strung together. She shone beautifully, like a garland adorned with intoxicated bees.
लतानां माधवे मासि फुल्लानां वायुसेवनात् ।
अन्योन्यमालाग्रथितं संसक्तकुसुमोच्चयम् ॥६१॥
61. latānāṃ mādhave māsi phullānāṃ vāyusevanāt ,
anyonyamālāgrathitaṃ saṃsaktakusumoccayam.

anyonyamālāgrathitam saṃsaktakusumoccayam
61. It was like an accumulation of flowers from blooming creepers, clinging and intertwined into each other's garlands, moved by the wind in the month of Madhava (spring).
व्यतिवेष्टितसुस्कन्थमन्योन्यभ्रमराकुलम् ।
आसीद्वनमिवोद्धूतं स्त्रीवनं रावणस्य तत् ॥६२॥
62. vyativeṣṭitasuskanthamanyonyabhramarākulam ,
āsīdvanamivoddhūtaṃ strīvanaṃ rāvaṇasya tat.

62. That multitude of Ravana's women, with their beautiful shoulders intertwined and agitated by their mutual bustling, became like a shaken forest.
उचितेष्वपि सुव्यक्तं न तासां योषितां तदा ।
विवेकः शक्य आधातुं भूषणाङ्गाम्बरस्रजाम् ॥६३॥
63. uciteṣvapi suvyaktaṃ na tāsāṃ yoṣitāṃ tadā ,
vivekaḥ śakya ādhātuṃ bhūṣaṇāṅgāmbarasrajām.

vivekaḥ śakyaḥ ādhātum bhūṣaṇāṅgāmbarasrajām

63. At that time, even with a clear view, it was not possible to distinguish between the ornaments, body parts, garments, and garlands of those women.
रावणे सुखसंविष्टे ताः स्त्रियो विविधप्रभाः ।
ज्वलन्तः काञ्चना दीपाः प्रेक्षन्तानिमिषा इव ॥६४॥
64. rāvaṇe sukhasaṃviṣṭe tāḥ striyo vividhaprabhāḥ ,
jvalantaḥ kāñcanā dīpāḥ prekṣantānimiṣā iva.

64. When Ravana was comfortably resting, those women of diverse brilliance watched him like unblinking, shining golden lamps.
राजर्षिपितृदैत्यानां गन्धर्वाणां च योषितः ।
रक्षसां चाभवन् कन्यास्तस्य कामवशं गताः ॥६५॥
65. rājarṣipitṛdaityānāṃ gandharvāṇāṃ ca yoṣitaḥ ,
rakṣasāṃ cābhavan kanyāstasya kāmavaśaṃ gatāḥ.

65. The wives of royal sages, ancestors, and (daitya) demons, and of (gandharva) celestial musicians, as well as the daughters of (rākṣasa) demons, all came under his (Ravana's) sway of desire (kāma).
न तत्र का चित् प्रमदा प्रसह्य वीर्योपपन्नेन गुणेन लब्धा ।
न चान्यकामापि न चान्यपूर्वा विना वरार्हां जनकात्मजां तु ॥६६॥
66. na tatra kā cit pramadā prasahya vīryopapannena guṇena labdhā ,
na cānyakāmāpi na cānyapūrvā vinā varārhāṃ janakātmajāṃ tu.

66. No woman was abducted there by force, nor was any obtained by a man endowed with valor. None of them desired another man, nor had any previously belonged to another, except for Janaka's daughter (Sītā), who is truly worthy.
न चाकुलीना न च हीनरूपा नादक्षिणा नानुपचार युक्ता ।
भार्याभवत्तस्य न हीनसत्त्वा न चापि कान्तस्य न कामनीया ॥६७॥
67. na cākulīnā na ca hīnarūpā nādakṣiṇā nānupacāra yuktā ,
bhāryābhavattasya na hīnasattvā na cāpi kāntasya na kāmanīyā.

adakṣiṇā na anupacārayuktā bhāryā
abhavat tasya na hīnasattvā

67. She (Sītā) was not of ignoble birth, nor of inferior beauty. She was not ungenerous, nor lacking in proper conduct. She became his wife; she was not of weak character, nor was she undesirable to her beloved (husband).
बभूव बुद्धिस्तु हरीश्वरस्य यदीदृशी राघवधर्मपत्नी ।
इमा यथा राक्षसराजभार्याः सुजातमस्येति हि साधुबुद्धेः ॥६८॥
68. babhūva buddhistu harīśvarasya yadīdṛśī rāghavadharmapatnī ,
imā yathā rākṣasarājabhāryāḥ sujātamasyeti hi sādhubuddheḥ.

yadi īdṛśī rāghavadharma-patnī
imāḥ yathā rākṣasarāja-bhāryāḥ
sujātam asya iti hi sādhubuddheḥ
68. harīśvarasya buddhiḥ tu babhūva (iti): "yadi rāghavadharma-patnī īdṛśī (na) yathā imāḥ rākṣasarāja-bhāryāḥ,
hi asya sujātam!" sādhubuddheḥ (iti).
68. But the monkey king's (Hanuman's) thought was, "If Rāghava's devoted wife (dharma-patnī) is like this (so pure and distinguished), unlike these wives of the demon king (Rāvaṇa) – truly, this is noble birth (sujātam) for her!" Such was the reasoning of his pure intellect.
पुनश्च सो ऽचिन्तयदार्तरूपो ध्रुवं विशिष्टा गुणतो हि सीता ।
अथायमस्यां कृतवान्महात्मा लङ्केश्वरः कष्टमनार्यकर्म ॥६९॥
69. punaśca so'cintayadārtarūpo dhruvaṃ viśiṣṭā guṇato hi sītā ,
athāyamasyāṃ kṛtavānmahātmā laṅkeśvaraḥ kaṣṭamanāryakarma.
69. punaḥ ca saḥ acintayat ārtarūpaḥ
dhruvam viśiṣṭā guṇataḥ hi sītā
atha ayam asyām kṛtavān mahātmā
laṅkeśvaraḥ kaṣṭam anāryakarma
69. punaḥ ca ārtarūpaḥ saḥ acintayat: "dhruvam hi sītā guṇataḥ viśiṣṭā.
atha ayam mahātmā laṅkeśvaraḥ asyām kaṣṭam anāryakarma kṛtavān.
"
69. Again, appearing distressed, he (Hanuman) pondered: "Surely Sītā is exceptionally distinguished by her qualities. Yet, this great and powerful lord of Laṅkā (Rāvaṇa) has committed a terrible, ignoble deed against her."
