उक्त वाक्ये मुनौ तस्मिन्नुभौ राघवलक्ष्मणौ ।
प्रतिनन्द्य कथां वीराव् ऊचतुर्मुनिपुंगवम् ॥१॥

1. When that sage had spoken these words, the two heroes, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, having welcomed his narration, addressed the foremost of sages.
धर्मयुक्तमिदं ब्रह्मन् कथितं परमं त्वया ।
दुहितुः शैलराजस्य ज्येष्ठाय वक्तुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. dharmayuktamidaṃ brahman kathitaṃ paramaṃ tvayā ,
duhituḥ śailarājasya jyeṣṭhāya vaktumarhasi.

duhituḥ śaila-rājasya jyeṣṭhāya vaktum arhasi

2. O Brāhmaṇa, this supreme account, which is imbued with natural law (dharma), has been narrated by you. You ought to speak concerning the eldest (daughter of the mountain king).
विस्तरं विस्तरज्ञो ऽसि दिव्यमानुषसंभवम् ।
त्रीन्पथो हेतुना केन पावयेल् लोकपावनी ॥३॥
3. vistaraṃ vistarajño'si divyamānuṣasaṃbhavam ,
trīnpatho hetunā kena pāvayel lokapāvanī.
3. vistaram vistara-jñaḥ asi divya-mānuṣa-saṃbhavam
trīn pathaḥ hetunā kena pāvayet loka-pāvanī
3. tvam vistara-jñaḥ asi; (tasyāḥ caritam) vistaram divya-mānuṣa-saṃbhavam (kathayasva).

3. You are indeed a knower of details, so please elaborate on her origin, which is both divine and human. By what cause does the purifier of worlds purify the three realms?
कथं गङ्गां त्रिपथगा विश्रुता सरिदुत्तमा ।
त्रिषु लोकेषु धर्मज्ञ कर्मभिः कैः समन्विता ॥४॥
4. kathaṃ gaṅgāṃ tripathagā viśrutā sariduttamā ,
triṣu lokeṣu dharmajña karmabhiḥ kaiḥ samanvitā.

4. dharma-jña,
katham gaṅgām tri-pathagā sarit-uttamā viśrutā triṣu lokeṣu (abhavat)? kaiḥ karmabhiḥ samanvitā (āsīt)?
4. O knower of natural law (dharma), how did Gaṅgā, the supreme river and the one who flows through three paths, become renowned in the three worlds? And with what deeds (karma) is she associated?
तथा ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे विश्वामित्रस्तपोधनः ।
निखिलेन कथां सर्वामृषिमध्ये न्यवेदयत् ॥५॥
5. tathā bruvati kākutsthe viśvāmitrastapodhanaḥ ,
nikhilena kathāṃ sarvāmṛṣimadhye nyavedayat.

5. When Kakutstha (Rama) spoke thus, Viśvāmitra, whose wealth was austerity (tapas), narrated the entire story completely among the sages.
पुरा राम कृतोद्वाहः शितिकण्ठो महातपाः ।
दृष्ट्वा च स्पृहया देवीं मैथुनायोपचक्रमे ॥६॥
6. purā rāma kṛtodvāhaḥ śitikaṇṭho mahātapāḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā ca spṛhayā devīṃ maithunāyopacakrame.

6. O Rama, long ago, Śitikaṇṭha (Shiva), who had completed his marriage and was a great ascetic (tapasvin), saw the goddess and, filled with desire, began to engage in conjugal union.
शितिकण्ठस्य देवस्य दिव्यं वर्षशतं गतम् ।
न चापि तनयो राम तस्यामासीत् परंतप ॥७॥
7. śitikaṇṭhasya devasya divyaṃ varṣaśataṃ gatam ,
na cāpi tanayo rāma tasyāmāsīt paraṃtapa.

7. O Rama, tormentor of foes (parantapa), a divine hundred years passed for the god Śitikaṇṭha, yet no son was born from her (Parvati).
ततो देवाः समुद्विग्नाः पितामहपुरोगमाः ।
यदिहोत्पद्यते भूतं कस्तत् प्रतिसहिष्यते ॥८॥
8. tato devāḥ samudvignāḥ pitāmahapurogamāḥ ,
yadihotpadyate bhūtaṃ kastat pratisahiṣyate.
8. tataḥ devāḥ samudvignāḥ pitāmahapurōgamāḥ yadi
iha utpadyate bhūtam kaḥ tat pratisahiṣyate

8. Then the gods, agitated and led by Brahmā (Pitāmaha), thought: "If a child is born here (on Earth), who will be able to withstand it?"
अभिगम्य सुराः सर्वे प्रणिपत्येदमब्रुवन् ।
देवदेव महादेव लोकस्यास्य हिते रत ।
सुराणां प्रणिपातेन प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥९॥
9. abhigamya surāḥ sarve praṇipatyedamabruvan ,
devadeva mahādeva lokasyāsya hite rata ,
surāṇāṃ praṇipātena prasādaṃ kartumarhasi.

9. All the gods, having approached Him and bowed down, spoke these words: "O God of gods, O Great God, you who are devoted to the welfare of this world, please show your grace in response to the prostration of the gods."
न लोका धारयिष्यन्ति तव तेजः सुरोत्तम ।
ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तो देव्या सह तपश्चर ॥१०॥
10. na lokā dhārayiṣyanti tava tejaḥ surottama ,
brāhmeṇa tapasā yukto devyā saha tapaścara.
10. na lokāḥ dhārayiṣyanti tava tejaḥ surottama
brāhmeṇa tapasā yuktaḥ devyā saha tapaḥ cara
10. surottama na lokāḥ tava tejaḥ dhārayiṣyanti
brāhmeṇa tapasā yuktaḥ devyā saha tapaḥ cara
10. O best among the gods, the worlds will not be able to contain your radiance (tejas). Therefore, united by supreme austerity, perform spiritual discipline (tapas) together with the Goddess.
त्रैलोक्यहितकामार्थं तेजस्तेजसि धारय ।
रक्ष सर्वानिमांल् लोकान्नालोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. trailokyahitakāmārthaṃ tejastejasi dhāraya ,
rakṣa sarvānimāṃl lokānnālokaṃ kartumarhasi.
11. trailokyahitakāmārtham tejaḥ tejasi dhāraya
rakṣa sarvān imān lokān na alokam kartum arhasi
11. trailokyahitakāmārtham tejaḥ tejasi dhāraya

11. For the welfare of the three worlds, withdraw your power (tejas) into itself. Protect all these worlds; you should not cause them to become devoid of life (aloka).
देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकमहेश्वरः ।
बाढमित्यब्रवीत् सर्वान्पुनश्चेदमुवाच ह ॥१२॥
12. devatānāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā sarvalokamaheśvaraḥ ,
bāḍhamityabravīt sarvānpunaścedamuvāca ha.
12. devatānām vacaḥ śrutvā sarvalokamaheśvaraḥ
bāḍham iti abravīt sarvān punaḥ ca idam uvāca ha
12. sarvalokamaheśvaraḥ devatānām vacaḥ śrutvā
bāḍham iti sarvān abravīt punaḥ ca idam uvāca ha
12. Having heard the words of the gods, the Great Lord of all worlds (sarvalokamaheśvara) said to all of them, "Very well," and then spoke these words again.
धारयिष्याम्यहं तेजस्तेजस्येव सहोमया ।
त्रिदशाः पृथिवी चैव निर्वाणमधिगच्छतु ॥१३॥
13. dhārayiṣyāmyahaṃ tejastejasyeva sahomayā ,
tridaśāḥ pṛthivī caiva nirvāṇamadhigacchatu.
13. dhārayiṣyāmi aham tejaḥ tejasi eva saha umayā
tridaśāḥ pṛthivī ca eva nirvāṇam adhigacchatu
13. aham umayā saha tejaḥ tejasi eva dhārayiṣyāmi
tridaśāḥ pṛthivī ca eva nirvāṇam adhigacchatu
13. I, along with Uma, will hold this splendor (tejas) within my own energy. May the gods and the earth both attain peace (nirvāṇa).
यदिदं क्षुभितं स्थानान्मम तेजो ह्यनुत्तमम् ।
धारयिष्यति कस्तन्मे ब्रुवन्तु सुरसत्तमाः ॥१४॥
14. yadidaṃ kṣubhitaṃ sthānānmama tejo hyanuttamam ,
dhārayiṣyati kastanme bruvantu surasattamāḥ.
14. yat idam kṣubhitam sthānāt mama tejaḥ hi anuttamam
dhārayiṣyati kaḥ tat me bruvantu surasattamāḥ
14. yat idam mama anuttamam tejaḥ sthānāt kṣubhitam
hi tat kaḥ me dhārayiṣyati bruvantu surasattamāḥ
14. Who will hold this supreme, agitated energy (tejas) of mine, which has been disturbed from its place? O best of gods, tell me!
एवमुक्तास्ततो देवाः प्रत्यूचुर्वृषभध्वजम् ।
यत्तेजः क्षुभितं ह्येतत्तद्धरा धारयिष्यति ॥१५॥
15. evamuktāstato devāḥ pratyūcurvṛṣabhadhvajam ,
yattejaḥ kṣubhitaṃ hyetattaddharā dhārayiṣyati.
15. evam uktāḥ tataḥ devāḥ pratyūcuḥ vṛṣabhadhvajam
yat tejaḥ kṣubhitam hi etat tat dharā dhārayiṣyati
15. evam uktāḥ tataḥ devāḥ vṛṣabhadhvajam pratyūcuḥ
yat etat kṣubhitam tejaḥ hi tat dharā dhārayiṣyati
15. Thus addressed, the gods then replied to Shiva (vṛṣabhadhvaja): "The Earth (dharā) will indeed hold this agitated energy (tejas)."
एवमुक्तः सुरपतिः प्रमुमोच महीतले ।
तेजसा पृथिवी येन व्याप्ता सगिरिकानना ॥१६॥
16. evamuktaḥ surapatiḥ pramumoca mahītale ,
tejasā pṛthivī yena vyāptā sagirikānanā.
16. evam uktaḥ surapatiḥ pramumoca mahītale
tejasā pṛthivī yena vyāptā sagirīkānanā

16. Thus addressed, the Lord of gods (Shiva) released the energy (tejas) upon the surface of the earth, by which the earth, with its mountains and forests, was completely pervaded.
ततो देवाः पुनरिदमूचुश्चाथ हुताशनम् ।
प्रविश त्वं महातेजो रौद्रं वायुसमन्वितः ॥१७॥
17. tato devāḥ punaridamūcuścātha hutāśanam ,
praviśa tvaṃ mahātejo raudraṃ vāyusamanvitaḥ.
17. tataḥ devāḥ punaḥ idam ūcuḥ ca atha hutāśanam
praviśa tvam mahātejaḥ raudram vāyusam anvitaḥ
17. atha devāḥ punaḥ hutāśanam idam ūcuḥ he
mahātejaḥ tvam vāyusam anvitaḥ raudram praviśa
17. Then the gods again spoke to Agni, saying, 'O greatly radiant one, you, accompanied by Vayu, must enter that fierce, potent energy.'
तदग्निना पुनर्व्याप्तं संजातः श्वेतपर्वतः ।
दिव्यं शरवणं चैव पावकादित्यसंनिभम् ।
यत्र जातो महातेजाः कार्तिकेयो ऽग्निसंभवः ॥१८॥
18. tadagninā punarvyāptaṃ saṃjātaḥ śvetaparvataḥ ,
divyaṃ śaravaṇaṃ caiva pāvakādityasaṃnibham ,
yatra jāto mahātejāḥ kārtikeyo'gnisaṃbhavaḥ.
18. tat agninā punaḥ vyāptam sañjātaḥ
śvetaparvataḥ | divyam śaravaṇam ca
eva pāvakādityasaṃnibham | yatra
jātaḥ mahātejaḥ kārtikeyaḥ agnisaṃbhavaḥ
18. tat agninā punaḥ vyāptam (sat)
śvetaparvataḥ divyam śaravaṇam ca eva
pāvakādityasaṃnibham sañjātaḥ yatra
mahātejaḥ agnisaṃbhavaḥ kārtikeyaḥ jātaḥ
18. That (semen/energy), once more pervaded by Agni, manifested as the White Mountain and a divine reed thicket, gleaming like fire and the sun. It was there that the greatly radiant Kārtikeya, born from Agni, took his birth.
अथोमां च शिवं चैव देवाः सर्षि गणास्तदा ।
पूजयामासुरत्यर्थं सुप्रीतमनसस्ततः ॥१९॥
19. athomāṃ ca śivaṃ caiva devāḥ sarṣi gaṇāstadā ,
pūjayāmāsuratyarthaṃ suprītamanasastataḥ.
19. atha umām ca śivam ca eva devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ tadā
| pūjayāmāsuḥ atyartham suprītamanasaḥ tataḥ
19. atha tadā devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ umām ca śivam ca
eva atyartham suprītamanasaḥ pūjayāmāsuḥ tataḥ
19. Then, the gods, along with the sages and their attendants, worshipped Uma and Shiva with utmost devotion, their minds filled with great joy.
अथ शैल सुता राम त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत् ।
समन्युरशपत् सर्वान् क्रोधसंरक्तलोचना ॥२०॥
20. atha śaila sutā rāma tridaśānidamabravīt ,
samanyuraśapat sarvān krodhasaṃraktalocanā.
20. atha śailasutā rāma tridaśān idam abravīt |
samanyuḥ aśapat sarvān krodhasaṃraktalocanā
20. atha rāma śailasutā samanyuḥ krodhasaṃraktalocanā
idam tridaśān abravīt (ca) sarvān aśapat
20. Then, O Rama, the daughter of the mountain (Parvati), filled with rage and her eyes reddened by fury, spoke this to the gods and cursed them all.
यस्मान्निवारिता चैव संगता पुत्रकाम्यया ।
अपत्यं स्वेषु दारेषु नोत्पादयितुमर्हथ ।
अद्य प्रभृति युष्माकमप्रजाः सन्तु पत्नयः ॥२१॥
21. yasmānnivāritā caiva saṃgatā putrakāmyayā ,
apatyaṃ sveṣu dāreṣu notpādayitumarhatha ,
adya prabhṛti yuṣmākamaprajāḥ santu patnayaḥ.
21. yasmāt nivāritā ca eva saṅgatā
putrakāmyayā apatyam sveṣu dāreṣu na
utpādayitum arhatha adya prabhṛti
yuṣmākam aprajāḥ santu patnayaḥ
21. yasmāt nivāritā ca eva putrakāmyayā
saṅgatā na arhatha utpādayitum
apatyam sveṣu dāreṣu adya prabhṛti
yuṣmākam patnayaḥ aprajāḥ santu
21. Because she was prevented from uniting [with you] even though she desired a son, you shall not be able to produce offspring with your own wives. From today onwards, your wives shall be childless.
एवमुक्त्वा सुरान् सर्वाञ् शशाप पृथिवीमपि ।
अवने नैकरूपा त्वं बहुभार्या भविष्यसि ॥२२॥
22. evamuktvā surān sarvāñ śaśāpa pṛthivīmapi ,
avane naikarūpā tvaṃ bahubhāryā bhaviṣyasi.
22. evam uktvā surān sarvān śaśāpa pṛthivīm api
avane na ekarūpā tvam bahubhāryā bhaviṣyasi
22. evam uktvā saḥ sarvān surān api pṛthivīm śaśāpa
avane! tvam na ekarūpā bahubhāryā bhaviṣyasi
22. Having spoken thus, he cursed all the gods and even the Earth. [He said,] 'O Earth, you shall be of many forms and have many husbands.'
न च पुत्रकृतां प्रीतिं मत्क्रोधकलुषी कृता ।
प्राप्स्यसि त्वं सुदुर्मेधे मम पुत्रमनिच्छती ॥२३॥
23. na ca putrakṛtāṃ prītiṃ matkrodhakaluṣī kṛtā ,
prāpsyasi tvaṃ sudurmedhe mama putramanicchatī.
23. na ca putrakṛtām prītim matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtā
prāpsyasi tvam sudurmedhe mama putram anicchati
23. ca na sudurmedhe tvam matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtā mama
putram anicchati putrakṛtām prītim prāpsyasi
23. Nor, O extremely foolish one, having been sullied by my anger, will you attain the joy that comes from a son, you who are unwilling to accept my son.
तान् सर्वान् व्रीडितान्दृष्ट्वा सुरान् सुरपतिस्तदा ।
गमनायोपचक्राम दिशं वरुणपालिताम् ॥२४॥
24. tān sarvān vrīḍitāndṛṣṭvā surān surapatistadā ,
gamanāyopacakrāma diśaṃ varuṇapālitām.
24. tān sarvān vrīḍitān dṛṣṭvā surān surapatiḥ
tadā gamanāya upacakrāma diśam varuṇapālitām
24. tadā surapatiḥ tān sarvān vrīḍitān surān
dṛṣṭvā gamanāya varuṇapālitām diśam upacakrāma
24. Seeing all those gods ashamed, the lord of the gods then set out to go towards the direction protected by Varuṇa.
स गत्वा तप आतिष्ठत् पार्श्वे तस्योत्तरे गिरेः ।
हिमवत्प्रभवे शृङ्गे सह देव्या महेश्वरः ॥२५॥
25. sa gatvā tapa ātiṣṭhat pārśve tasyottare gireḥ ,
himavatprabhave śṛṅge saha devyā maheśvaraḥ.
25. sa gatvā tapaḥ ātiṣṭhat pārśve tasya uttare
gireḥ himavatprabhave śṛṅge saha devyā maheśvaraḥ
25. Maheśvara (Maheśvara), accompanied by the goddess, went and undertook severe penance (tapas) on a peak originating from Himavat, specifically on the northern side of that mountain.
एष ते विस्तरो राम शैलपुत्र्या निवेदितः ।
गङ्गायाः प्रभवं चैव शृणु मे सहलक्ष्मणः ॥२६॥
26. eṣa te vistaro rāma śailaputryā niveditaḥ ,
gaṅgāyāḥ prabhavaṃ caiva śṛṇu me sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.
26. eṣa te vistaraḥ rāma śailaputryā niveditaḥ
gaṅgāyāḥ prabhavaṃ ca eva śṛṇu me sahalakṣmaṇaḥ
26. O Rāma, this detailed account of the daughter of the mountain (Śailaputrī) has been told to you. Now, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, listen to me about the origin of the Gaṅgā as well.
