And listen again, O King of kings, to my beneficial advice, just as that foremost among the gods spoke in the narrative.
इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातो भविष्यति सुधार्मिकः ।
राजा दशरथो नाम्ना श्रीमान् सत्यप्रतिश्रवः ॥२॥

2. ikṣvākūṇāṃ kule jāto bhaviṣyati sudhārmikaḥ ,

A very righteous (dhārmika) king will be born in the Ikṣvāku lineage, named Daśaratha, who will be glorious and true to his promises.
अङ्गराजेन सख्यं च तस्य राज्ञो भविष्यति ।
कन्या चास्य महाभागा शान्ता नाम भविष्यति ॥३॥

3. aṅgarājena sakhyaṃ ca tasya rājño bhaviṣyati ,
kanyā cāsya mahābhāgā śāntā nāma bhaviṣyati.

And that king (Daśaratha) will form a friendship with the king of Aṅga. The king of Aṅga will also have a greatly fortunate daughter named Śāntā.
पुत्रस्त्वङ्गस्य राज्ञस्तु लोमपाद इति श्रुतः ।

The king of Aṅga, however, is known as Lomapāda. That greatly illustrious King Daśaratha will approach him.
अनपत्यो ऽस्मि धर्मात्मञ् शान्ताभर्ता मम क्रतुम् ।
आहरेत त्वयाज्ञप्तः संतानार्थं कुलस्य च ॥५॥

“O righteous soul (dharmātman), I am childless. May Śāntā's husband, when commanded by you, perform my ritual (yajña) for the sake of offspring and my lineage.”
श्रुत्वा राज्ञो ऽथ तद्वाक्यं मनसा स विचिन्त्य च ।
प्रदास्यते पुत्रवन्तं शान्ता भर्तारमात्मवान् ॥६॥

Then, having heard those words of the king and having pondered them with his mind, the self-possessed (ātman-vān) sage will grant (him) a tranquil ruler endowed with sons.
प्रतिगृह्य च तं विप्रं स राजा विगतज्वरः ।
आहरिष्यति तं यज्ञं प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥७॥

7. pratigṛhya ca taṃ vipraṃ sa rājā vigatajvaraḥ ,

And having received that Brahmin, that king, free from anxiety, will perform that Vedic ritual (yajña) with a joyful inner self (ātman).
तं च राजा दशरथो यष्टुकामः कृताञ्जलिः ।
ऋश्यशृङ्गं द्विजश्रेष्ठं वरयिष्यति धर्मवित् ॥८॥

8. taṃ ca rājā daśaratho yaṣṭukāmaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ ,

ca rājā daśarathaḥ dharma-vit yaṣṭu-kāmaḥ kṛta-añjaliḥ

And King Daśaratha, a knower of (dharma), desirous of performing a Vedic ritual (yajña) and with joined palms (kṛtāñjali), will choose Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, the best of the twice-born.
यज्ञार्थं प्रसवार्थं च स्वर्गार्थं च नरेश्वरः ।
लभते च स तं कामं द्विजमुख्याद्विशां पतिः ॥९॥

9. yajñārthaṃ prasavārthaṃ ca svargārthaṃ ca nareśvaraḥ ,

yajña-artham prasava-artham ca svarga-artham ca nara-īśvaraḥ

ca nara-īśvaraḥ viśām patiḥ yajña-artham ca prasava-artham
ca svarga-artham tam kāmam dvija-mukhyāt sa labhate
ca svarga-artham tam kāmam dvija-mukhyāt sa labhate

And the lord of men (nareśvara), the lord of the people, obtains that desire for the sake of the Vedic ritual (yajña), for the sake of progeny, and for the sake of heaven, from the chief of the twice-born (brahmins).
पुत्राश्चास्य भविष्यन्ति चत्वारो ऽमितविक्रमाः ।
वंशप्रतिष्ठानकराः सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुताः ॥१०॥

10. putrāścāsya bhaviṣyanti catvāro'mitavikramāḥ ,

10.
His four sons, possessing immense valor, will come into being, establishing his lineage and becoming renowned throughout all worlds.
एवं स देवप्रवरः पूर्वं कथितवान् कथाम् ।
सनत्कुमारो भगवान्पुरा देवयुगे प्रभुः ॥११॥

11. evaṃ sa devapravaraḥ pūrvaṃ kathitavān kathām ,

In this manner, the revered Sanatkumāra, who is the foremost among the gods and a Lord, formerly narrated this story in the divine age.
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल तमानय सुसत्कृतम् ।
स्वयमेव महाराज गत्वा सबलवाहनः ॥१२॥

12. sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla tamānaya susatkṛtam ,
svayameva mahārāja gatvā sabalavāhanaḥ.

O tiger among men, you, O great king, should personally go with your army and conveyances and bring that well-honored one here.
अनुमान्य वसिष्ठं च सूतवाक्यं निशम्य च ।
सान्तःपुरः सहामात्यः प्रययौ यत्र स द्विजः ॥१३॥

13. anumānya vasiṣṭhaṃ ca sūtavākyaṃ niśamya ca ,

Having sought the consent of Vasiṣṭha and having heard the charioteer's (sūta) words, he, accompanied by his inner court and ministers, set out for the place where that Brahmin (dvija) resided.
वनानि सरितश्चैव व्यतिक्रम्य शनैः शनैः ।
अभिचक्राम तं देशं यत्र वै मुनिपुंगवः ॥१४॥

14. vanāni saritaścaiva vyatikramya śanaiḥ śanaiḥ ,

Slowly, having crossed forests and rivers, he approached that region where the eminent sage resided.
आसाद्य तं द्विजश्रेष्ठं लोमपादसमीपगम् ।
ऋषिपुत्रं ददर्शादौ दीप्यमानमिवानलम् ॥१५॥

15. āsādya taṃ dvijaśreṣṭhaṃ lomapādasamīpagam ,

Having approached that best of Brahmins (dvijaśreṣṭha) who was near Lomapāda, he first saw the sage's son, glowing like a fire.
ततो राजा यथान्यायं पूजां चक्रे विशेषतः ।
सखित्वात्तस्य वै राज्ञः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥१६॥

16. tato rājā yathānyāyaṃ pūjāṃ cakre viśeṣataḥ ,

Then, the king offered worship (pūjā) to him appropriately and with special reverence. He did this with a greatly delighted inner self (antarātman), on account of his friendship with King Lomapāda.
लोमपादेन चाख्यातमृषिपुत्राय धीमते ।
सख्यं संबन्धकं चैव तदा तं प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥१७॥

17. lomapādena cākhyātamṛṣiputrāya dhīmate ,
sakhyaṃ saṃbandhakaṃ caiva tadā taṃ pratyapūjayat.

And by Lomapāda, friendship and their relationship were explained to the wise sage's son. Then, the sage's son honored him (Lomapāda) in return.
एवं सुसत्कृतस्तेन सहोषित्वा नरर्षभः ।
सप्ताष्टदिवसान् राजा राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥

18. evaṃ susatkṛtastena sahoṣitvā nararṣabhaḥ ,
saptāṣṭadivasān rājā rājānamidamabravīt.

Having thus been well-received by him and having stayed together for seven or eight days, King Daśaratha, the best among men, spoke this to King Romapāda.

O king, O lord of the people, let your daughter Shāntā go to my city with her husband, for indeed, a great task has arisen.

20. tatheti rājā saṃśrutya gamanaṃ tasya dhīmataḥ ,

Having assented with 'So be it,' to the intelligent (Daśaratha's request for) his departure, the king (Romapāda) then spoke these words to the Brahmin (Ṛśyaśṛṅga): 'You, go with your wife!'

The son of the sage (Ṛśyaśṛṅga), having assented with 'So be it,' then spoke thus to the king (Romapāda). He, having been granted leave by the king, departed with his wife.
तावन्योन्याञ्जलिं कृत्वा स्नेहात् संश्लिष्य चोरसा ।
ननन्दतुर्दशरथो लोमपादश्च वीर्यवान् ॥२२॥

22. tāvanyonyāñjaliṃ kṛtvā snehāt saṃśliṣya corasā ,

Having offered each other the añjali gesture and having embraced affectionately, both Dasharatha and the valiant Lomapāda rejoiced.
ततः सुहृदमापृच्छ्य प्रस्थितो रघुनन्दनः ।
पौरेभ्यः प्रेषयामास दूतान् वै शीघ्रगामिनः ।
क्रियतां नगरं सर्वं क्षिप्रमेव स्वलंकृतम् ॥२३॥

23. tataḥ suhṛdamāpṛcchya prasthito raghunandanaḥ ,
paurebhyaḥ preṣayāmāsa dūtān vai śīghragāminaḥ ,
kriyatāṃ nagaraṃ sarvaṃ kṣiprameva svalaṃkṛtam.

Then, having taken leave of his friend, the descendant of Raghu (Raghunandana) departed. He sent swift messengers to the citizens, with the message: "Let the entire city be swiftly and well adorned."
ततः प्रहृष्टाः पौरास्ते श्रुत्वा राजानमागतम् ।
तथा प्रचक्रुस्तत् सर्वं राज्ञा यत् प्रेषितं तदा ॥२४॥

Then, those citizens, delighted upon hearing that the king had arrived, promptly carried out all that which had been commanded by the king at that time.
ततः स्वलंकृतं राजा नगरं प्रविवेश ह ।
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः पुरस्कृत्य द्विजर्षभम् ॥२५॥

Then the king entered the well-adorned city, placing the chief of Brahmins in front, amidst the sounds of conches and drums.
ततः प्रमुदिताः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा तं नागरा द्विजम् ।
प्रवेश्यमानं सत्कृत्य नरेन्द्रेणेन्द्रकर्मणा ॥२६॥

Then, all the citizens, seeing that Brahmin (dvija) being led in and honored by the king, whose actions resembled those of Indra, became greatly overjoyed.
अन्तःपुरं प्रवेश्यैनं पूजां कृत्वा तु शास्त्रतः ।
कृतकृत्यं तदात्मानं मेने तस्योपवाहनात् ॥२७॥

Having led him into the inner palace and performed worship according to the sacred texts, he then considered his own self (ātman) to have accomplished its purpose by assisting him.
अन्तःपुराणि सर्वाणि शान्तां दृष्ट्वा तथागताम् ।
सह भर्त्रा विशालाक्षीं प्रीत्यानन्दमुपागमन् ॥२८॥

All the women of the inner palace, having seen the peaceful, wide-eyed lady (viśālākṣī) who had arrived with her husband, experienced great joy and delight.
पूज्यमाना च ताभिः सा राज्ञा चैव विशेषतः ।
उवास तत्र सुखिता कं चित् कालं सह द्विजा ॥२९॥

29. pūjyamānā ca tābhiḥ sā rājñā caiva viśeṣataḥ ,

And she, being honored by those women and especially by the king, happily dwelt there for some time, O Brahmin (dvija).
