Then, having heard Aṅgada's words, all those excellent monkeys declared their individual enthusiasm for the journey, in due order.
गजो गवाक्षो गवयः शरभो गन्धमादनः ।
मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव सुषेणो जाम्बवांस्तथा ॥२॥

Gaja, Gavākṣa, Gavaya, Śarabha, and Gandhamādana, and also Mainda, Dvivida, Suṣeṇa, and Jāmbavān.
आबभाषे गजस्तत्र प्लवेयं दशयोजनम् ।
गवाक्षो योजनान्याह गमिष्यामीति विंशतिम् ॥३॥

3. ābabhāṣe gajastatra plaveyaṃ daśayojanam ,

There, Gaja declared, "I can jump ten yojanas." Gavākṣa said, "I will go twenty yojanas."
गवयो वानरस्तत्र वानरांस्तानुवाच ह ।

There, the monkey Gavaya then said to those monkeys, "O jumpers, I will go thirty yojanas."
शरभो वानरस्तत्र वानरांस्तानुवाच ह ।
चत्वारिंशद्गमिष्यामि योजनानां न संशयः ॥५॥

There, the monkey Śarabha then said to those monkeys, "I will go forty yojanas; there is no doubt."
वानरांस्तु महातेजा अब्रवीद्गन्धमादनः ।
योजनानां गमिष्यामि पञ्चाशत्तु न संशयः ॥६॥
योजनानां गमिष्यामि पञ्चाशत्तु न संशयः ॥६॥
6. vānarāṃstu mahātejā abravīdgandhamādanaḥ ,
yojanānāṃ gamiṣyāmi pañcāśattu na saṃśayaḥ.

Then the immensely energetic Gandhamādana said to the monkeys: 'I will surely go fifty yojanas; there is no doubt about it.'
मैन्दस्तु वानरस्तत्र वानरांस्तानुवाच ह ।
योजनानां परं षष्टिमहं प्लवितुमुत्सहे ॥७॥

7. maindastu vānarastatra vānarāṃstānuvāca ha ,

Then, the monkey Mainda spoke to those monkeys: 'I am capable of leaping beyond sixty yojanas.'
ततस्तत्र महातेजा द्विविदः प्रत्यभाषत ।
गमिष्यामि न संदेहः सप्ततिं योजनान्यहम् ॥८॥

8. tatastatra mahātejā dvividaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
gamiṣyāmi na saṃdehaḥ saptatiṃ yojanānyaham.

After that, the greatly energetic Dvivida replied: 'I will traverse seventy yojanas; there is no doubt.'
सुषेणस्तु हरिश्रेष्ठः प्रोक्तवान् कपिसत्तमान् ।
अशीतिं योजनानां तु प्लवेयं प्लवगर्षभाः ॥९॥

9. suṣeṇastu hariśreṣṭhaḥ proktavān kapisattamān ,
aśītiṃ yojanānāṃ tu plaveyaṃ plavagarṣabhāḥ.

Then Suṣeṇa, the foremost among the monkeys, declared to the best of the apes: 'I can leap eighty yojanas, O excellent monkeys!'
तेषां कथयतां तत्र सर्वांस्ताननुमान्य च ।
ततो वृद्धतमस्तेषां जाम्बवान्प्रत्यभाषत ॥१०॥

10. teṣāṃ kathayatāṃ tatra sarvāṃstānanumānya ca ,

And there, after listening to and assenting to all of them who were speaking, Jambavan, the eldest among them, then replied.
पूर्वमस्माकमप्यासीत् कश्चिद्गतिपराक्रमः ।
ते वयं वयसः पारमनुप्राप्ताः स्म साम्प्रतम् ॥११॥

11. pūrvamasmākamapyāsīt kaścidgatiparākramaḥ ,
te vayaṃ vayasaḥ pāramanuprāptāḥ sma sāmpratam.

pūrvam asmākam api āsīt kaścit gatiparākramaḥ

Formerly, even we possessed a certain prowess in swift movement. But now, we have reached the very end of our lifespan.
किं तु नैवं गते शक्यमिदं कार्यमुपेक्षितुम् ।
यदर्थं कपिराजश्च रामश्च कृतनिश्चयौ ॥१२॥

12. kiṃ tu naivaṃ gate śakyamidaṃ kāryamupekṣitum ,
yadarthaṃ kapirājaśca rāmaśca kṛtaniścayau.

kim tu na evam gate śakyam idam kāryam upekṣitum

However, in this present situation, it is not possible to neglect this important task, for which both the king of monkeys (Sugrīva) and (Rāma) are firmly resolved.
साम्प्रतं कालभेदेन या गतिस्तां निबोधत ।
नवतिं योजनानां तु गमिष्यामि न संशयः ॥१३॥
नवतिं योजनानां तु गमिष्यामि न संशयः ॥१३॥
13. sāmprataṃ kālabhedena yā gatistāṃ nibodhata ,
navatiṃ yojanānāṃ tu gamiṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ.

sāmpratam kālabhedena yā gatiḥ tām nibodhata
navatim yojanānām tu gamiṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ

Now, listen to the range of my movement, which is diminished by time. I will certainly traverse ninety yojanas, there is no doubt.
तांश्च सर्वान् हरिश्रेष्ठाञ्जाम्बवान्पुनरब्रवीत् ।
न खल्वेतावदेवासीद्गमने मे पराक्रमः ॥१४॥

14. tāṃśca sarvān hariśreṣṭhāñjāmbavānpunarabravīt ,
na khalvetāvadevāsīdgamane me parākramaḥ.

tān ca sarvān hariśreṣṭhān jāmbavān punaḥ abravīt
| na khalu etāvat eva āsīt gamane me parākramaḥ

Jambavān then spoke again to all those foremost among the monkeys: "My might (parākrama) in traveling was certainly not limited to just this much."
मया महाबलैश्चैव यज्ञे विष्णुः सनातनः ।
प्रदक्षिणीकृतः पूर्वं क्रममाणस्त्रिविक्रमः ॥१५॥
प्रदक्षिणीकृतः पूर्वं क्रममाणस्त्रिविक्रमः ॥१५॥
15. mayā mahābalaiścaiva yajñe viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ ,
pradakṣiṇīkṛtaḥ pūrvaṃ kramamāṇastrivikramaḥ.

mayā mahābalaiḥ ca eva yajñe viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ
| pradakṣiṇīkṛtaḥ pūrvam kramamāṇaḥ trivikramaḥ
| pradakṣiṇīkṛtaḥ pūrvam kramamāṇaḥ trivikramaḥ
15.
Together with mighty ones, I previously circumambulated the eternal Viṣṇu in a (yajña), when he was striding as Trivikrama.
स इदानीमहं वृद्धः प्लवने मन्दविक्रमः ।
यौवने च तदासीन्मे बलमप्रतिमं परैः ॥१६॥
यौवने च तदासीन्मे बलमप्रतिमं परैः ॥१६॥
16. sa idānīmahaṃ vṛddhaḥ plavane mandavikramaḥ ,
yauvane ca tadāsīnme balamapratimaṃ paraiḥ.
yauvane ca tadāsīnme balamapratimaṃ paraiḥ.

saḥ idānīm aham vṛddhaḥ plavane mandavikramaḥ |
yauvane ca tadā āsīt me balam apratimam paraiḥ
yauvane ca tadā āsīt me balam apratimam paraiḥ

Now, being old, I have diminished strength in leaping. But in my youth, my power was unmatched by any other.
संप्रत्येतावतीं शक्तिं गमने तर्कयाम्यहम् ।
नैतावता च संसिद्धिः कार्यस्यास्य भविष्यति ॥१७॥
नैतावता च संसिद्धिः कार्यस्यास्य भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. saṃpratyetāvatīṃ śaktiṃ gamane tarkayāmyaham ,
naitāvatā ca saṃsiddhiḥ kāryasyāsya bhaviṣyati.

samprati etāvatīm śaktim gamane tarkayāmi aham |
na etāvatā ca saṃsiddhiḥ kāryasya asya bhaviṣyati

Currently, I estimate my ability (śakti) for traveling to be only this much. And with just this much, the completion of this particular task will not be possible.
अथोत्तरमुदारार्थमब्रवीदङ्गदस्तदा ।
अनुमान्य महाप्राज्ञो जाम्बवन्तं महाकपिम् ॥१८॥

18. athottaramudārārthamabravīdaṅgadastadā ,
anumānya mahāprājño jāmbavantaṃ mahākapim.

Then, the greatly wise Angada, having gained the approval of the great monkey Jambavan, spoke a profoundly meaningful reply.
अहमेतद्गमिष्यामि योजनानां शतं महत् ।
निवर्तने तु मे शक्तिः स्यान्न वेति न निश्चितम् ॥१९॥
निवर्तने तु मे शक्तिः स्यान्न वेति न निश्चितम् ॥१९॥
19. ahametadgamiṣyāmi yojanānāṃ śataṃ mahat ,
nivartane tu me śaktiḥ syānna veti na niścitam.

I will go this great distance of a hundred yojanas. However, whether I will have the strength for the return journey or not is not certain.
तमुवाच हरिश्रेष्ठो जाम्बवान् वाक्यकोविदः ।
ज्ञायते गमने शक्तिस्तव हर्यृक्षसत्तम ॥२०॥

20. tamuvāca hariśreṣṭho jāmbavān vākyakovidaḥ ,
jñāyate gamane śaktistava haryṛkṣasattama.

hariśreṣṭhaḥ vākyakovidaḥ jāmbavān tam uvāca
he haryṛkṣasattama! tava gamane śaktiḥ jñāyate
he haryṛkṣasattama! tava gamane śaktiḥ jñāyate
20.
To him spoke Jambavan, the chief of the Vānaras and an eloquent speaker: 'Your ability to go is known, O best among monkeys and bears!'
कामं शतसहस्रं वा न ह्येष विधिरुच्यते ।
योजनानां भवाञ् शक्तो गन्तुं प्रतिनिवर्तितुम् ॥२१॥

21. kāmaṃ śatasahasraṃ vā na hyeṣa vidhirucyate ,
yojanānāṃ bhavāñ śakto gantuṃ pratinivartitum.

kāmam śatasahasram vā na hi eṣaḥ vidhiḥ ucyate
yojanānām bhavān śaktaḥ gantum pratinivartitum
yojanānām bhavān śaktaḥ gantum pratinivartitum

kāmam śatasahasram vā hi eṣaḥ vidhiḥ na ucyate
bhavān yojanānām gantum pratinivartitum śaktaḥ

Indeed, you are capable of (traveling) even a hundred thousand (yojanas). For this principle (of uncertainty about returning) is certainly not stated (for you). You, Sir, are capable of going and returning (over a distance of many) yojanas.
न हि प्रेषयिता तत स्वामी प्रेष्यः कथं चन ।
भवतायं जनः सर्वः प्रेष्यः प्लवगसत्तम ॥२२॥

22. na hi preṣayitā tata svāmī preṣyaḥ kathaṃ cana ,
bhavatāyaṃ janaḥ sarvaḥ preṣyaḥ plavagasattama.

Indeed, a sender, O dear one, who is a master, is never a mere servant in any way. O best among monkeys, this entire populace is to be dispatched by you as messengers.
भवान् कलत्रमस्माकं स्वामिभावे व्यवस्थितः ।
स्वामी कलत्रं सैन्यस्य गतिरेषा परंतप ॥२३॥

23. bhavān kalatramasmākaṃ svāmibhāve vyavasthitaḥ ,
svāmī kalatraṃ sainyasya gatireṣā paraṃtapa.

You are our support, established in the position of a master. A master is indeed the protection of the army; this is the proper course of action, O tormentor of foes.
तस्मात् कलत्रवत्तात प्रतिपाल्यः सदा भवान् ।
अपि चैतस्य कार्यस्य भवान्मूलमरिंदम ॥२४॥

24. tasmāt kalatravattāta pratipālyaḥ sadā bhavān ,
api caitasya kāryasya bhavānmūlamariṃdama.

Therefore, O dear one, you must always be protected like dependents. Moreover, you are the very foundation of this mission, O subduer of enemies.
मूलमर्थस्य संरक्ष्यमेष कार्यविदां नयः ।

The foundation of any undertaking must be protected; this is the principle of those who understand affairs. For indeed, when the root is present, secondary outcomes like flowers and fruits thrive.
तद्भवानस्या कार्यस्य साधने सत्यविक्रमः ।
बुद्धिविक्रमसंपन्नो हेतुरत्र परंतपः ॥२६॥

26. tadbhavānasyā kāryasya sādhane satyavikramaḥ ,

Therefore, O tormentor of foes, you possess true valor in accomplishing this task. You are indeed the capable agent here, endowed with both intelligence and prowess.
गुरुश्च गुरुपुत्रश्च त्वं हि नः कपिसत्तम ।
भवन्तमाश्रित्य वयं समर्था ह्यर्थसाधने ॥२७॥

Indeed, O best among monkeys, you are both our revered teacher (guru) and the son of our teacher. It is by relying on you that we shall certainly be capable of achieving our objective.
उक्तवाक्यं महाप्राज्ञं जाम्बवन्तं महाकपिः ।
प्रत्युवाचोत्तरं वाक्यं वालिसूनुरथाङ्गदः ॥२८॥

Then, the great monkey Angada, son of Valī, replied to the highly wise Jāmbavān, who had just spoken, with a counter-statement.
यदि नाहं गमिष्यामि नान्यो वानरपुंगवः ।
पुनः खल्विदमस्माभिः कार्यं प्रायोपवेशनम् ॥२९॥

29. yadi nāhaṃ gamiṣyāmi nānyo vānarapuṃgavaḥ ,
punaḥ khalvidamasmābhiḥ kāryaṃ prāyopaveśanam.

If neither I nor any other excellent monkey is to go, then indeed, the only course of action left for us is again to undertake a fast unto death.
न ह्यकृत्वा हरिपतेः संदेशं तस्य धीमतः ।
तत्रापि गत्वा प्राणानां पश्यामि परिरक्षणम् ॥३०॥

30. na hyakṛtvā haripateḥ saṃdeśaṃ tasya dhīmataḥ ,

Indeed, without first executing the message of that wise lord of monkeys, I do not see how we can preserve our lives, even if we were to go there.
स हि प्रसादे चात्यर्थं कोपे च हरिरीश्वरः ।
अतीत्य तस्य संदेशं विनाशो गमने भवेत् ॥३१॥

31. sa hi prasāde cātyarthaṃ kope ca harirīśvaraḥ ,

Indeed, he (Sugrīva), the lord (īśvara) of monkeys, is greatly powerful both in showing favor and in expressing anger. Therefore, if we transgress his message, our departure itself will lead to destruction.
तद् यथा ह्यस्य कार्यस्य न भवत्यन्यथा गतिः ।
तद्भवानेव दृष्टार्थः संचिन्तयितुमर्हति ॥३२॥

32. tad yathā hyasya kāryasya na bhavatyanyathā gatiḥ ,

Therefore, since the outcome of this task must not be otherwise, Your Honor, being one who has a clear perception of the objective, should deliberate carefully on it.
सो ऽङ्गदेन तदा वीरः प्रत्युक्तः प्लवगर्षभः ।
जाम्बवानुत्तरं वाक्यं प्रोवाचेदं ततो ऽङ्गदम् ॥३३॥

33. so'ṅgadena tadā vīraḥ pratyuktaḥ plavagarṣabhaḥ ,

Then, that hero, the chief of monkeys, having been addressed by Aṅgada, Jāmbavān subsequently spoke this reply to Aṅgada.
अस्य ते वीर कार्यस्य न किं चित् परिहीयते ।
एष संचोदयाम्येनं यः कार्यं साधयिष्यति ॥३४॥
एष संचोदयाम्येनं यः कार्यं साधयिष्यति ॥३४॥
34. asya te vīra kāryasya na kiṃ cit parihīyate ,
eṣa saṃcodayāmyenaṃ yaḥ kāryaṃ sādhayiṣyati.

O hero, nothing of this task of yours is left incomplete. I shall now urge him who will accomplish the objective.
ततः प्रतीतं प्लवतां वरिष्ठमेकान्तमाश्रित्य सुखोपविष्टम् ।
संचोदयामास हरिप्रवीरो हरिप्रवीरं हनुमन्तमेव ॥३५॥

Then, Jāmbavān, the foremost of the monkeys, urged Hanuman – who was himself a chief among the monkeys, confident, having resorted to a solitary place, and comfortably seated.
