ततो निक्षिप्य मातॄः स अयोध्यायां दृढव्रतः ।
भरतः शोकसंतप्तो गुरूनिदमथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Then, after settling his mothers in Ayodhya, Bharata, steadfast in his vow and distressed by sorrow, spoke these words to his preceptors (guru).
नन्दिग्रामं गमिष्यामि सर्वानामन्त्रये ऽद्य वः ।
तत्र दुःखमिदं सर्वं सहिष्ये राघवं विना ॥२॥
2. nandigrāmaṃ gamiṣyāmi sarvānāmantraye'dya vaḥ ,
tatra duḥkhamidaṃ sarvaṃ sahiṣye rāghavaṃ vinā.
2. nandigrāmam gamiṣyāmi sarvān āmantraye adya vaḥ
tatra duḥkham idam sarvam sahiṣye rāghavam vinā

2. I shall go to Nandigrama; today I bid farewell to all of you. There, without Rama, I will endure all this suffering.
गतश्च हि दिवं राजा वनस्थश्च गुरुर्मम ।
रामं प्रतीक्षे राज्याय स हि राजा महायशाः ॥३॥
3. gataśca hi divaṃ rājā vanasthaśca gururmama ,
rāmaṃ pratīkṣe rājyāya sa hi rājā mahāyaśāḥ.
3. gataḥ ca hi divam rājā vanasthaḥ ca guruḥ mama
rāmam pratīkṣe rājyāya saḥ hi rājā mahāyaśāḥ
3. hi rājā divam gataḥ ca mama guruḥ vanasthaḥ ca
rāmam rājyāya pratīkṣe hi saḥ mahāyaśāḥ rājā
3. Indeed, the king has departed to heaven, and my revered elder (guru) Rama is residing in the forest. I await Rama for the sake of the kingdom, for he is truly a king of great renown.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं भरतस्य महात्मनः ।
अब्रुवन्मन्त्रिणः सर्वे वसिष्ठश्च पुरोहितः ॥४॥
4. etacchrutvā śubhaṃ vākyaṃ bharatasya mahātmanaḥ ,
abruvanmantriṇaḥ sarve vasiṣṭhaśca purohitaḥ.
4. etat śrutvā śubham vākyam bharatasya mahātmanaḥ
abruvan mantriṇaḥ sarve vasiṣṭhaḥ ca purohitaḥ
4. mahātmanaḥ bharatasya śubham vākyam etat śrutvā

4. After hearing this auspicious statement from the great-souled Bharata, all the ministers and the priest Vasiṣṭha spoke.
सदृशं श्लाघनीयं च यदुक्तं भरत त्वया ।
वचनं भ्रातृवात्सल्यादनुरूपं तवैव तत् ॥५॥
5. sadṛśaṃ ślāghanīyaṃ ca yaduktaṃ bharata tvayā ,
vacanaṃ bhrātṛvātsalyādanurūpaṃ tavaiva tat.
5. sadṛśam ślāghanīyam ca yat uktam bharata tvayā
vacanam bhrātṛvātsalyāt anurūpam tava eva tat
5. bharata tvayā yat uktam tat sadṛśam ca ślāghanīyam
tat vacanam tava bhrātṛvātsalyāt eva anurūpam
5. O Bharata, what you have said is both suitable and praiseworthy. That statement of yours is indeed appropriate, born of brotherly affection.
नित्यं ते बन्धुलुब्धस्य तिष्ठतो भ्रातृसौहृदे ।
आर्यमार्गं प्रपन्नस्य नानुमन्येत कः पुमान् ॥६॥
6. nityaṃ te bandhulubdhasya tiṣṭhato bhrātṛsauhṛde ,
āryamārgaṃ prapannasya nānumanyeta kaḥ pumān.
6. nityam te bandhulubdhasya tiṣṭhataḥ bhrātṛsauhṛde
āryamārgam prapannasya na anumanyeta kaḥ pumān
6. bandhulubdhasya bhrātṛsauhṛde nityam tiṣṭhataḥ
āryamārgam prapannasya te kaḥ pumān na anumanyeta
6. Of you, who are always devoted to your kinsmen, steadfast in brotherly affection, and following the noble path – what man would not approve of you?
मन्त्रिणां वचनं श्रुत्वा यथाभिलषितं प्रियम् ।
अब्रवीत् सारथिं वाक्यं रथो मे युज्यतामिति ॥७॥
7. mantriṇāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā yathābhilaṣitaṃ priyam ,
abravīt sārathiṃ vākyaṃ ratho me yujyatāmiti.
7. mantriṇām vacanam śrutvā yathābhilaṣitam priyam
abravīt sārathim vākyam rathaḥ me yujyatām iti
7. mantriṇām yathābhilaṣitam priyam vacanam śrutvā

7. After hearing the ministers' pleasing and desired statement, he said to the charioteer, "Let my chariot be yoked."
प्रहृष्टवदनः सर्वा मातॄः समभिवाद्य सः ।
आरुरोह रथं श्रीमाञ् शत्रुघ्नेन समन्वितः ॥८॥
8. prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ sarvā mātṝḥ samabhivādya saḥ ,
āruroha rathaṃ śrīmāñ śatrughnena samanvitaḥ.
8. prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ sarvāḥ mātṝḥ samabhivādya saḥ
āruroha ratham śrīmān śatrughnena samanvitaḥ

8. With a joyful face, he, the glorious one, having respectfully saluted all the mothers, ascended the chariot, accompanied by Shatrughna.
आरुह्य तु रथं शीघ्रं शत्रुघ्नभरताव् उभौ ।
ययतुः परमप्रीतौ वृतौ मन्त्रिपुरोहितैः ॥९॥
9. āruhya tu rathaṃ śīghraṃ śatrughnabharatāv ubhau ,
yayatuḥ paramaprītau vṛtau mantripurohitaiḥ.
9. āruhya tu ratham śīghram śatrughnabharatau ubhau
yayatuḥ paramaprītau vṛtau mantripurohitaiḥ
9. tu śīghram ratham āruhya ubhau śatrughnabharatau

9. Having quickly ascended the chariot, both Shatrughna and Bharata, greatly delighted, went forth, accompanied by ministers and priests.
अग्रतो पुरवस्तत्र वसिष्ठ प्रमुखा द्विजाः ।
प्रययुः प्राङ्मुखाः सर्वे नन्दिग्रामो यतो ऽभवत् ॥१०॥
10. agrato puravastatra vasiṣṭha pramukhā dvijāḥ ,
prayayuḥ prāṅmukhāḥ sarve nandigrāmo yato'bhavat.
10. agrataḥ puravasaḥ tatra vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ dvijāḥ
prayayuḥ prāṅmukhāḥ sarve nandigrāmaḥ yataḥ abhavat
10. agrataḥ tatra sarve puravasaḥ vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ
dvijāḥ prāṅmukhāḥ prayayuḥ yataḥ nandigrāmaḥ abhavat
10. In front, all the citizens (puravasaḥ), along with the Brahmins (dvijāḥ) headed by Vasishtha (Vasiṣṭha), proceeded eastward to where Nandigrama was located.
बलं च तदनाहूतं गजाश्वरथसंकुलम् ।
प्रययौ भरते याते सर्वे च पुरवासिनः ॥११॥
11. balaṃ ca tadanāhūtaṃ gajāśvarathasaṃkulam ,
prayayau bharate yāte sarve ca puravāsinaḥ.
11. balam ca tad anāhūtam gajāśvarathasaṅkulam
prayayau bharate yāte sarve ca puravāsinaḥ
11. ca tad anāhūtam gajāśvarathasaṅkulam balam
prayayau ca bharate yāte sarve puravāsinaḥ
11. And that unsummoned army, bustling with elephants, horses, and chariots, also departed. Furthermore, when Bharata had set out, all the city dwellers (puravāsinaḥ) also followed.
रथस्थः स तु धर्मात्मा भरतो भ्रातृवत्सलः ।
नन्दिग्रामं ययौ तूर्णं शिरस्याधाय पादुके ॥१२॥
12. rathasthaḥ sa tu dharmātmā bharato bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ,
nandigrāmaṃ yayau tūrṇaṃ śirasyādhāya pāduke.
12. rathasthaḥ saḥ tu dharmātmā bharataḥ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ
nandigrāmam yayau tūrṇam śirasi ādhāya pāduke
12. saḥ dharmātmā bhrātṛvatsalaḥ bharataḥ rathasthaḥ

12. Bharata, who was righteous (dharmātmā) and affectionate towards his brothers, quickly went to Nandigrama, having placed the two sandals (pāduke) on his head, while situated in his chariot.
ततस्तु भरतः क्षिप्रं नन्दिग्रामं प्रविश्य सः ।
अवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णं गुरूनिदमुवाच ह ॥१३॥
13. tatastu bharataḥ kṣipraṃ nandigrāmaṃ praviśya saḥ ,
avatīrya rathāttūrṇaṃ gurūnidamuvāca ha.
13. tataḥ tu bharataḥ kṣipram nandigrāmam praviśya
saḥ avatīrya rathāt tūrṇam gurūn idam uvāca ha
13. tataḥ tu saḥ bharataḥ kṣipram nandigrāmam praviśya
rathāt tūrṇam avatīrya gurūn idam uvāca ha
13. Then, Bharata, having quickly entered Nandigrama and quickly descended from the chariot, said this to the venerable teachers (gurus).
एतद् राज्यं मम भ्रात्रा दत्तं संन्यासवत् स्वयम् ।
योगक्षेमवहे चेमे पादुके हेमभूषिते ।
तमिमं पालयिष्यामि राघवागमनं प्रति ॥१४॥
14. etad rājyaṃ mama bhrātrā dattaṃ saṃnyāsavat svayam ,
yogakṣemavahe ceme pāduke hemabhūṣite ,
tamimaṃ pālayiṣyāmi rāghavāgamanaṃ prati.
14. etat rājyam mama bhrātrā dattam
saṃnyāsavat svayam yogakṣemavahe ca
ime pāduke hemabhūṣite tam imam
pālayiṣyāmi rāghavāgamanam prati
14. etat rājyam mama bhrātrā svayam saṃnyāsavat dattam.

14. “This kingdom was given by my brother himself, as if it were an offering of renunciation (saṃnyāsa). And these two sandals (pāduke), adorned with gold, are the bearers of security and welfare (yogakṣema). I shall protect this (kingdom) until the return of Raghava.”
क्षिप्रं संयोजयित्वा तु राघवस्य पुनः स्वयम् ।
चरणौ तौ तु रामस्य द्रक्ष्यामि सहपादुकौ ॥१५॥
15. kṣipraṃ saṃyojayitvā tu rāghavasya punaḥ svayam ,
caraṇau tau tu rāmasya drakṣyāmi sahapādukau.
15. kṣipram saṃyojayitvā tu rāghavasya punaḥ svayam
caraṇau tau tu rāmasya drakṣyāmi sahapādukau
15. kṣipram punaḥ svayam rāghavasya saṃyojayitvā tu,
tau sahapādukau rāmasya caraṇau drakṣyāmi
15. Having quickly placed (the sandals) again upon Raghava's feet myself, I shall then behold those two feet of Rama, along with the sandals.
ततो निक्षिप्तभारो ऽहं राघवेण समागतः ।
निवेद्य गुरवे राज्यं भजिष्ये गुरुवृत्तिताम् ॥१६॥
16. tato nikṣiptabhāro'haṃ rāghaveṇa samāgataḥ ,
nivedya gurave rājyaṃ bhajiṣye guruvṛttitām.
16. tataḥ nikṣiptabhāraḥ aham rāghaveṇa samāgataḥ
nivedya gurave rājyam bhajiṣye guruvṛttitām
16. aham tataḥ rāghaveṇa samāgataḥ nikṣiptabhāraḥ
gurave rājyam nivedya guruvṛttitām bhajiṣye
16. Then, having relinquished my burden, I will meet with Rama. After offering the kingdom to my elder brother (guru), I shall adopt the conduct befitting a disciple (guruvṛttitām).
राघवाय च संन्यासं दत्त्वेमे वरपादुके ।
राज्यं चेदमयोध्यां च धूतपापो भवामि च ॥१७॥
17. rāghavāya ca saṃnyāsaṃ dattveme varapāduke ,
rājyaṃ cedamayodhyāṃ ca dhūtapāpo bhavāmi ca.
17. rāghavāya ca saṃnyāsam dattvā ime varapāduke
rājyam ca idam ayodhyām ca dhūtapāpaḥ bhavāmi ca
17. ca dattvā ime varapāduke ca saṃnyāsam rāghavāya
ca idam rājyam ayodhyām ca bhavāmi dhūtapāpaḥ
17. And by giving these excellent sandals and my renunciation (saṃnyāsa) to Rama, along with this kingdom and Ayodhya, I shall become one whose sins are purified (dhūtapāpa).
अभिषिक्ते तु काकुत्स्थे प्रहृष्टमुदिते जने ।
प्रीतिर्मम यशश्चैव भवेद् राज्याच्चतुर्गुणम् ॥१८॥
18. abhiṣikte tu kākutsthe prahṛṣṭamudite jane ,
prītirmama yaśaścaiva bhaved rājyāccaturguṇam.
18. abhiṣikte tu kākutsthe praḥṛṣṭamudite jane prītiḥ
mama yaśaḥ ca eva bhavet rājyāt caturguṇam
18. tu kākutsthe abhiṣikte jane praḥṛṣṭamudite mama
prītiḥ ca eva yaśaḥ rājyāt caturguṇam bhavet
18. Indeed, once Rama (the descendant of Kakutstha) is consecrated and the people are joyful and delighted, my contentment and fame will be four times greater than what I would gain from the kingdom itself.
एवं तु विलपन्दीनो भरतः स महायशाः ।
नन्दिग्रामे ऽकरोद् राज्यं दुःखितो मन्त्रिभिः सह ॥१९॥
19. evaṃ tu vilapandīno bharataḥ sa mahāyaśāḥ ,
nandigrāme'karod rājyaṃ duḥkhito mantribhiḥ saha.
19. evam tu vilapan dīnaḥ bharataḥ saḥ mahāyaśāḥ
nandigrāme akarot rājyam duḥkhitaḥ mantribhiḥ saha
19. evam tu saḥ mahāyaśāḥ dīnaḥ vilapan bharataḥ
nandigrāme mantribhiḥ saha duḥkhitaḥ rājyam akarot
19. Thus, Bharata, the greatly renowned and wretchedly lamenting one, ruled the kingdom from Nandigrama, remaining distressed, accompanied by his ministers.
स वल्कलजटाधारी मुनिवेषधरः प्रभुः ।
नन्दिग्रामे ऽवसद्वीरः ससैन्यो भरतस्तदा ॥२०॥
20. sa valkalajaṭādhārī muniveṣadharaḥ prabhuḥ ,
nandigrāme'vasadvīraḥ sasainyo bharatastadā.
20. sa valkalajaṭādhārī muniveṣadharaḥ prabhuḥ
nandigrāme avasat vīraḥ sasainyaḥ bharataḥ tadā
20. tadā vīraḥ prabhuḥ sasainyaḥ bharataḥ
valkalajaṭādhārī muniveṣadharaḥ nandigrāme avasat
20. Then, the heroic lord Bharata, wearing garments of bark and matted hair, having adopted the appearance of an ascetic (muni), resided in Nandigrama with his army.
रामागमनमाकाङ्क्षन्भरतो भ्रातृवत्सलः ।
भ्रातुर्वचनकारी च प्रतिज्ञापारगस्तदा ॥२१॥
21. rāmāgamanamākāṅkṣanbharato bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ,
bhrāturvacanakārī ca pratijñāpāragastadā.
21. rāma āgamanam ākaṅkṣan bharataḥ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ
bhrātuḥ vacanakārī ca pratijñāpāragaḥ tadā
21. tadā bharataḥ rāma āgamanam ākaṅkṣan bhrātṛvatsalaḥ
ca bhrātuḥ vacanakārī pratijñāpāragaḥ
21. Then, Bharata, longing for Rama's return, affectionate towards his brother, and fulfilling both his brother's command and his own vow (pratijñā).
पादुके त्वभिषिच्याथ नन्दिग्रामे ऽवसत्तदा ।
भरतः शासनं सर्वं पादुकाभ्यां न्यवेदयत् ॥२२॥
22. pāduke tvabhiṣicyātha nandigrāme'vasattadā ,
bharataḥ śāsanaṃ sarvaṃ pādukābhyāṃ nyavedayat.
22. pāduke tu abhiṣicya atha nandigrāme avasat tadā
bharataḥ śāsanam sarvam pādukābhyām nyavedayat
22. atha pāduke abhiṣicya bharataḥ tadā nandigrāme avasat
bharataḥ sarvam śāsanam pādukābhyām nyavedayat
22. Then, after consecrating the two sandals, Bharata resided in Nandigrama. He submitted all governance to the two sandals.
