प्रसक्ताश्रुमुखीत्येवं ब्रुवन्ती जनकात्मजा ।
अधोमुखमुखी बाला विलप्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥१॥

1. Thus speaking, Janaka's daughter, her face streaming with tears, the young woman, with a downcast countenance, began to lament.
उन्मत्तेव प्रमत्तेव भ्रान्तचित्तेव शोचती ।
उपावृत्ता किशोरीव विवेष्टन्ती महीतले ॥२॥
2. unmatteva pramatteva bhrāntacitteva śocatī ,
upāvṛttā kiśorīva viveṣṭantī mahītale.
2. unmattā iva pramattā iva bhrāntacittā iva
śocatī upāvṛttā kiśorī iva viveṣṭantī mahītale

2. She laments like a madwoman, like one intoxicated, or like one with a bewildered mind. Like a young girl, she is writhing and rolling on the ground.
राघवस्याप्रमत्तस्य रक्षसा कामरूपिणा ।
रावणेन प्रमथ्याहमानीता क्रोशती बलात् ॥३॥
3. rāghavasyāpramattasya rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā ,
rāvaṇena pramathyāhamānītā krośatī balāt.
3. rāghavasya apramattasya rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā
rāvaṇena pramathya aham ānītā krośatī balāt

3. While I was crying out, I was forcibly brought here by Rāvaṇa, that rākṣasa (rākṣasa) who can assume any form at will, after he overpowered me, even though Rāghava (Rāghava) is ever vigilant.
राक्षसी वशमापन्ना भर्त्यमाना सुदारुणम् ।
चिन्तयन्ती सुदुःखार्ता नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥४॥
4. rākṣasī vaśamāpannā bhartyamānā sudāruṇam ,
cintayantī suduḥkhārtā nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe.
4. rākṣasī vaśam āpannā bhartsyamānā sudāruṇam
cintayantī suduḥkhārtā na aham jīvitum utsahe
4. rākṣasī vaśam āpannā sudāruṇam bhartsyamānā

4. Having fallen into the power of these female rākṣasas (rākṣasī), being horribly threatened, and afflicted by intense sorrow as I contemplate my fate, I no longer wish to live.
न हि मे जीवितेनार्थो नैवार्थैर्न च भूषणैः ।
वसन्त्या राक्षसी मध्ये विना रामं महारथम् ॥५॥
5. na hi me jīvitenārtho naivārthairna ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
vasantyā rākṣasī madhye vinā rāmaṃ mahāratham.
5. na hi me jīvitena arthaḥ na eva arthaiḥ na ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ
vasantyāḥ rākṣasī madhye vinā rāmam mahāratham
5. hi me jīvitena arthaḥ na,
na eva arthaiḥ,
na ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ.
rāmam mahāratham vinā,
rākṣasī madhye vasantyāḥ (me arthaḥ na).
5. Indeed, there is no purpose for my life, nor for wealth, nor for ornaments while I am dwelling amidst these female rākṣasas (rākṣasī), without Rāma (Rāma), the great charioteer.
धिङ् मामनार्यामसतीं याहं तेन विना कृता ।
मुहूर्तमपि रक्षामि जीवितं पापजीविता ॥६॥
6. dhiṅ māmanāryāmasatīṃ yāhaṃ tena vinā kṛtā ,
muhūrtamapi rakṣāmi jīvitaṃ pāpajīvitā.
6. dhik mām anāryām asatīm yā aham tena vinā
kṛtā muhūrtam api rakṣāmi jīvitam pāpajīvitā
6. dhik mām anāryām asatīm yā aham tena vinā
kṛtā muhūrtam api jīvitam rakṣāmi pāpajīvitā
6. Shame on me, ignoble and unfaithful, who, separated from him, preserves this life even for a moment, a life of wretchedness.
का च मे जीविते श्रद्धा सुखे वा तं प्रियं विना ।
भर्तारं सागरान्ताया वसुधायाः प्रियं वदम् ॥७॥
7. kā ca me jīvite śraddhā sukhe vā taṃ priyaṃ vinā ,
bhartāraṃ sāgarāntāyā vasudhāyāḥ priyaṃ vadam.
7. kā ca me jīvite śraddhā sukhe vā tam priyam vinā
bhartāram sāgarāntāyāḥ vasudhāyāḥ priyaṃvadam
7. me tam priyam bhartāram sāgarāntāyāḥ vasudhāyāḥ

7. What desire (śraddhā) do I have in life, or in happiness, without that beloved husband, the kind-speaking lord of the ocean-bordered earth?
भिद्यतां भक्ष्यतां वापि शरीरं विसृजाम्यहम् ।
न चाप्यहं चिरं दुःखं सहेयं प्रियवर्जिता ॥८॥
8. bhidyatāṃ bhakṣyatāṃ vāpi śarīraṃ visṛjāmyaham ,
na cāpyahaṃ ciraṃ duḥkhaṃ saheyaṃ priyavarjitā.
8. bhidyatām bhakṣyatām vā api śarīram visṛjāmi aham
na ca api aham ciram duḥkham saheyām priyavarjitā
8. śarīram bhidyatām vā api bhakṣyatām.
aham visṛjāmi.
aham priyavarjitā ciram duḥkham na ca api saheyām.
8. Let my body be torn apart or even devoured; I will abandon it. I, deprived of my beloved, cannot endure this sorrow for long.
चरणेनापि सव्येन न स्पृशेयं निशाचरम् ।
रावणं किं पुनरहं कामयेयं विगर्हितम् ॥९॥
9. caraṇenāpi savyena na spṛśeyaṃ niśācaram ,
rāvaṇaṃ kiṃ punarahaṃ kāmayeyaṃ vigarhitam.
9. caraṇena api savyena na spṛśeyam niśācaram
rāvaṇam kim punaḥ aham kāmayeyam vigarhitam
9. aham savyena api caraṇena niśācaram rāvaṇam na spṛśeyam.
punaḥ kim aham vigarhitam kāmayeyam.
9. I would not even touch that night-wanderer Rāvaṇa with my left foot. How, then, could I possibly desire that despicable being?
प्रत्याख्यातं न जानाति नात्मानं नात्मनः कुलम् ।
यो नृशंस स्वभावेन मां प्रार्थयितुमिच्छति ॥१०॥
10. pratyākhyātaṃ na jānāti nātmānaṃ nātmanaḥ kulam ,
yo nṛśaṃsa svabhāvena māṃ prārthayitumicchati.
10. pratyākhyātam na jānāti na ātmānam na ātmanaḥ kulam
| yaḥ nṛśaṃsa svabhāvena mām prārthayitum icchati
10. yaḥ nṛśaṃsa svabhāvena mām prārthayitum icchati saḥ
pratyākhyātam na jānāti na ātmānam na ātmanaḥ kulam
10. He who, cruel by nature, desires to solicit me, understands neither rejection, nor his own self (ātman), nor his own lineage.
छिन्ना भिन्ना विभक्ता वा दीप्ते वाग्नौ प्रदीपिता ।
रावणं नोपतिष्ठेयं किं प्रलापेन वश्चिरम् ॥११॥
11. chinnā bhinnā vibhaktā vā dīpte vāgnau pradīpitā ,
rāvaṇaṃ nopatiṣṭheyaṃ kiṃ pralāpena vaściram.
11. chinnā bhinnā vibhaktā vā dīpte vā agnau pradīpitā
| rāvaṇam na upatiṣṭheyam kim pralāpena vaḥ ciram
11. chinnā bhinnā vibhaktā vā dīpte agnau vā pradīpitā
na rāvaṇam upatiṣṭheyam vaḥ ciram pralāpena kim
11. Even if I were cut, broken, or divided, or consumed by a blazing fire, I would not submit to Rāvaṇa. What is the use of your prolonged idle talk?
ख्यातः प्राज्ञः कृतज्ञश्च सानुक्रोशश्च राघवः ।
सद्वृत्तो निरनुक्रोशः शङ्के मद्भाग्यसंक्षयात् ॥१२॥
12. khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñaśca sānukrośaśca rāghavaḥ ,
sadvṛtto niranukrośaḥ śaṅke madbhāgyasaṃkṣayāt.
12. khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñaḥ ca sānukrośaḥ ca rāghavaḥ
| sadvṛttaḥ niranukrośaḥ śaṅke mat bhāgyasaṃkṣayāt
12. rāghavaḥ khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñaḥ ca sānukrośaḥ ca
sadvṛttaḥ mat bhāgyasaṃkṣayāt niranukrośaḥ śaṅke
12. Rāghava is renowned, wise, grateful, compassionate, and of virtuous conduct. However, I suspect that due to the decline of my fortune, he has become uncompassionate.
राक्षसानां जनस्थाने सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ।
येनैकेन निरस्तानि स मां किं नाभिपद्यते ॥१३॥
13. rākṣasānāṃ janasthāne sahasrāṇi caturdaśa ,
yenaikena nirastāni sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyate.
13. rākṣasānām janasthāne sahasrāṇi caturdaśa |
yena ekena nirastāni saḥ mām kim na abhipadyate
13. yena ekena janasthāne caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rākṣasānām nirastāni,
saḥ mām kim na abhipadyate
13. He by whom fourteen thousand demonic beings (rākṣasas) were destroyed in Janasthāna alone, why does that very one not come to me?
निरुद्धा रावणेनाहमल्पवीर्येण रक्षसा ।
समर्थः खलु मे भर्ता रावणं हन्तुमाहवे ॥१४॥
14. niruddhā rāvaṇenāhamalpavīryeṇa rakṣasā ,
samarthaḥ khalu me bhartā rāvaṇaṃ hantumāhave.
14. niruddhā rāvaṇena aham alpavīryeṇa rakṣasā
samarthaḥ khalu me bhartā rāvaṇam hantum āhave
14. aham alpavīryeṇa rakṣasā rāvaṇena niruddhā me
bhartā khalu āhave rāvaṇam hantum samarthaḥ
14. I have been imprisoned by Rāvaṇa, a demon (rakṣas) of little prowess. My husband is indeed capable of killing Rāvaṇa in battle.
विराधो दण्डकारण्ये येन राक्षसपुंगवः ।
रणे रामेण निहतः स मां किं नाभिपद्यते ॥१५॥
15. virādho daṇḍakāraṇye yena rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ ,
raṇe rāmeṇa nihataḥ sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyate.
15. virādhaḥ daṇḍakāraṇye yena rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ
raṇe rāmeṇa nihataḥ saḥ mām kim na abhipadyate
15. yena daṇḍakāraṇye rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ virādhaḥ
raṇe rāmeṇa nihataḥ saḥ kim mām na abhipadyate
15. Why does that Rāma, by whom the foremost demon (rākṣasapuṅgava) Virādha was killed in battle (raṇa) in the Daṇḍaka forest (daṇḍakāraṇya), not come to my aid?
कामं मध्ये समुद्रस्य लङ्केयं दुष्प्रधर्षणा ।
न तु राघवबाणानां गतिरोधी ह विद्यते ॥१६॥
16. kāmaṃ madhye samudrasya laṅkeyaṃ duṣpradharṣaṇā ,
na tu rāghavabāṇānāṃ gatirodhī ha vidyate.
16. kāmam madhye samudrasya laṅkā iyam duṣpradharṣaṇā
na tu rāghavabāṇānām gatirodhī ha vidyate
16. kāmam iyam laṅkā samudrasya madhye duṣpradharṣaṇā
tu ha rāghavabāṇānām gatirodhī na vidyate
16. Indeed, this Laṅkā, situated in the middle of the ocean (samudra), is difficult to assault. But surely, there exists no obstruction to the path of Rāghava's arrows.
किं नु तत् कारणं येन रामो दृढपराक्रमः ।
रक्षसापहृतां भार्यामिष्टां नाभ्यवपद्यते ॥१७॥
17. kiṃ nu tat kāraṇaṃ yena rāmo dṛḍhaparākramaḥ ,
rakṣasāpahṛtāṃ bhāryāmiṣṭāṃ nābhyavapadyate.
17. kim nu tat kāraṇam yena rāmaḥ dṛḍhaparākramaḥ
rakṣasā apahṛtām bhāryām iṣṭām na abhyavapadyate
17. kim nu tat kāraṇam yena dṛḍhaparākramaḥ rāmaḥ
rakṣasā apahṛtām iṣṭām bhāryām na abhyavapadyate
17. What then is that reason by which Rāma, who is of firm valor, does not recover his beloved wife, who was carried away by a demon (rakṣas)?
इहस्थां मां न जानीते शङ्के लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः ।
जानन्नपि हि तेजस्वी धर्षणां मर्षयिष्यति ॥१८॥
18. ihasthāṃ māṃ na jānīte śaṅke lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ,
jānannapi hi tejasvī dharṣaṇāṃ marṣayiṣyati.
18. iha-sthām mām na jānīte śaṅke lakṣmaṇa-pūrvajaḥ
jānan api hi tejasvī dharṣaṇām marṣayiṣyati
18. lakṣmaṇa-pūrvajaḥ mām iha-sthām na jānīte śaṅke
hi tejasvī jānan api dharṣaṇām marṣayiṣyati
18. I suspect Lakṣmaṇa's elder brother (Rāma) does not know that I am held captive here. For how could that valorous one, even if he knew, tolerate such an outrage?
हृतेति यो ऽधिगत्वा मां राघवाय निवेदयेत् ।
गृध्रराजो ऽपि स रणे रावणेन निपातितः ॥१९॥
19. hṛteti yo'dhigatvā māṃ rāghavāya nivedayet ,
gṛdhrarājo'pi sa raṇe rāvaṇena nipātitaḥ.
19. hṛtā iti yaḥ adhigatvā mām rāghavāya nivedayet
gṛdhrarājaḥ api saḥ raṇe rāvaṇena nipātitaḥ
19. yaḥ adhigatvā mām hṛtā iti rāghavāya nivedayet,
saḥ gṛdhrarājaḥ api rāvaṇena raṇe nipātitaḥ
19. The one who, having found me, would report to Rāma that I have been abducted, even that king of vultures (Jaṭāyu) was struck down by Rāvaṇa in battle.
कृतं कर्म महत्तेन मां तदाभ्यवपद्यता ।
तिष्ठता रावणद्वन्द्वे वृद्धेनापि जटायुषा ॥२०॥
20. kṛtaṃ karma mahattena māṃ tadābhyavapadyatā ,
tiṣṭhatā rāvaṇadvandve vṛddhenāpi jaṭāyuṣā.
20. kṛtam karma mahat tena mām tadā abhyavapadyatā
tiṣṭhatā rāvaṇa-dvandve vṛddhena api jaṭāyuṣā
20. mahat karma tena jaṭāyuṣā vṛddhena api mām
abhyavapadyatā rāvaṇa-dvandve tiṣṭhatā kṛtam
20. A great deed was performed by him, by Jaṭāyu, who, though old, then engaged on my behalf and stood his ground in a duel against Rāvaṇa.
यदि मामिह जानीयाद्वर्तमानां स राघवः ।
अद्य बाणैरभिक्रुद्धः कुर्याल् लोकमराक्षसं ॥२१॥
21. yadi māmiha jānīyādvartamānāṃ sa rāghavaḥ ,
adya bāṇairabhikruddhaḥ kuryāl lokamarākṣasaṃ.
21. yadi mām iha jānīyāt vartamānām saḥ rāghavaḥ
adya bāṇaiḥ abhikruddhaḥ kuryāt lokam arākṣasam
21. yadi saḥ rāghavaḥ mām iha vartamānām jānīyāt,
abhikruddhaḥ adya bāṇaiḥ lokam arākṣasam kuryāt
21. If that Rāghava (Rāma) were to know that I am present here, then, enraged, he would immediately make the world free of rākṣasas with his arrows.
विधमेच्च पुरीं लङ्कां शोषयेच्च महोदधिम् ।
रावणस्य च नीचस्य कीर्तिं नाम च नाशयेत् ॥२२॥
22. vidhamecca purīṃ laṅkāṃ śoṣayecca mahodadhim ,
rāvaṇasya ca nīcasya kīrtiṃ nāma ca nāśayet.
22. vidhamet ca purīm laṅkām śoṣayet ca mahodadhim
rāvaṇasya ca nīcasya kīrtim nāma ca nāśayet
22. purīm laṅkām ca vidhamet mahodadhim ca śoṣayet
rāvaṇasya nīcasya ca kīrtim nāma ca nāśayet
22. He should destroy the city of Lanka and dry up the great ocean. He should also destroy the name and reputation of the vile Ravana.
ततो निहतनथानां राक्षसीनां गृहे गृहे ।
यथाहमेवं रुदती तथा भूयो न संशयः ।
अन्विष्य रक्षसां लङ्कां कुर्याद् रामः सलक्ष्मणः ॥२३॥
23. tato nihatanathānāṃ rākṣasīnāṃ gṛhe gṛhe ,
yathāhamevaṃ rudatī tathā bhūyo na saṃśayaḥ ,
anviṣya rakṣasāṃ laṅkāṃ kuryād rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ.
23. tataḥ nihatanāthānām rākṣasīnām gṛhe
gṛhe yathā aham evam rudatī tathā
bhūyaḥ na saṃśayaḥ anviṣya rakṣasām
laṅkām kuryāt rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ
23. rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ rakṣasām laṅkām
anviṣya kuryāt tataḥ nihatanāthānām
rākṣasīnām gṛhe gṛhe aham yathā
evam rudatī tathā bhūyaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
23. Then, in every house of the female demons whose lords have been slain, they will weep just as I am weeping now – of this, there is no doubt. Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana, having searched Lanka, the abode of the demons, should ensure this (outcome).
न हि ताभ्यां रिपुर्दृष्टो मुहूतमपि जीवति ।
चिता धूमाकुलपथा गृध्रमण्डलसंकुला ।
अचिरेण तु लङ्केयं श्मशानसदृशी भवेत् ॥२४॥
24. na hi tābhyāṃ ripurdṛṣṭo muhūtamapi jīvati ,
citā dhūmākulapathā gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṃkulā ,
acireṇa tu laṅkeyaṃ śmaśānasadṛśī bhavet.
24. na hi tābhyām ripuḥ dṛṣṭaḥ muhūrtam
api jīvati citā dhūmākulapathā
gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṃkulā acireṇa
tu laṅkā iyam śmaśānasadṛśī bhavet
24. hi tābhyām dṛṣṭaḥ ripuḥ muhūrtam
api na jīvati acireṇa tu iyam
laṅkā citādhūmākulapathā
gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṃkulā śmaśānasadṛśī bhavet
24. Indeed, no enemy seen by those two (Rama and Lakshmana) lives even for a moment. This Lanka will soon become like a cremation ground, with paths choked by funeral pyre smoke and swarming with flocks of vultures.
अचिरेणैव कालेन प्राप्स्याम्येव मनोरथम् ।
दुष्प्रस्थानो ऽयमाख्याति सर्वेषां वो विपर्ययः ॥२५॥
25. acireṇaiva kālena prāpsyāmyeva manoratham ,
duṣprasthāno'yamākhyāti sarveṣāṃ vo viparyayaḥ.
25. acireṇa eva kālena prāpsyāmi eva manoratham
duṣprasthānaḥ ayam ākhyāti sarveṣām vaḥ viparyayaḥ
25. acireṇa eva kālena aham manoratham eva prāpsyāmi
ayam duṣprasthānaḥ vaḥ sarveṣām viparyayaḥ ākhyāti
25. Indeed, in a short time, I shall certainly achieve my desire. This inauspicious journey (Ravana's act of taking me) portends a downfall for all of you.
यादृशानि तु दृश्यन्ते लङ्कायामशुभानि तु ।
अचिरेणैव कालेन भविष्यति हतप्रभा ॥२६॥
26. yādṛśāni tu dṛśyante laṅkāyāmaśubhāni tu ,
acireṇaiva kālena bhaviṣyati hataprabhā.
26. yādṛśāni tu dṛśyante laṅkāyām aśubhāni tu
acireṇa eva kālena bhaviṣyati hataprabhā
26. laṅkāyām aśubhāni yādṛśāni tu dṛśyante
acireṇa eva kālena hataprabhā bhaviṣyati
26. The inauspicious signs that are indeed observed in Laṅkā indicate that, in a very short time, it will become devoid of its splendor.
नूनं लङ्का हते पापे रावणे राक्षसाधिपे ।
शोषं यास्यति दुर्धर्षा प्रमदा विधवा यथा ॥२७॥
27. nūnaṃ laṅkā hate pāpe rāvaṇe rākṣasādhipe ,
śoṣaṃ yāsyati durdharṣā pramadā vidhavā yathā.
27. nūnam laṅkā hate pāpe rāvaṇe rākṣasādhipe
śoṣam yāsyati durdharṣā pramadā vidhavā yathā
27. nūnam pāpe rāvaṇe rākṣasādhipe hate laṅkā
durdharṣā śoṣam yāsyati yathā pramadā vidhavā
27. Surely, once the wicked Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, is slain, Laṅkā, though previously unassailable, will become desolate, just like a woman (pramadā) who has become a widow.
पुष्योत्सवसमृद्धा च नष्टभर्त्री सराक्षसा ।
भविष्यति पुरी लङ्का नष्टभर्त्री यथाङ्गना ॥२८॥
28. puṣyotsavasamṛddhā ca naṣṭabhartrī sarākṣasā ,
bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā naṣṭabhartrī yathāṅganā.
28. puṣyotsavasamṛddhā ca naṣṭabhartrī sarākṣasā
bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā naṣṭabhartrī yathā aṅganā
28. purī laṅkā puṣyotsavasamṛddhā ca sarākṣasā
naṣṭabhartrī bhaviṣyati yathā aṅganā naṣṭabhartrī
28. The city of Laṅkā, which was prosperous with Puṣya (constellation) festivals and populated by rākṣasas, will become like a woman (aṅganā) who has lost her husband, indeed having lost its own master.
नूनं राक्षसकन्यानां रुदन्तीनां गृहे गृहे ।
श्रोष्यामि नचिरादेव दुःखार्तानामिह ध्वनिम् ॥२९॥
29. nūnaṃ rākṣasakanyānāṃ rudantīnāṃ gṛhe gṛhe ,
śroṣyāmi nacirādeva duḥkhārtānāmiha dhvanim.
29. nūnam rākṣasakanyānām rudantīnām gṛhe gṛhe
śroṣyāmi nacirāt eva duḥkhārtānām iha dhvanim
29. nūnam nacirāt eva iha gṛhe gṛhe rākṣasakanyānām
rudantīnām duḥkhārtānām dhvanim śroṣyāmi
29. Surely, very soon, I shall hear here the lamentations of the weeping rākṣasa maidens, who are afflicted by sorrow, from house to house.
सान्धकारा हतद्योता हतराक्षसपुंगवा ।
भविष्यति पुरी लङ्का निर्दग्धा रामसायकैः ॥३०॥
30. sāndhakārā hatadyotā hatarākṣasapuṃgavā ,
bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā nirdagdhā rāmasāyakaiḥ.

30. The city of Laṅkā will become filled with darkness, its light destroyed, its foremost rākṣasas slain, and utterly consumed by Rāma's arrows.
यदि नाम स शूरो मां रामो रक्तान्तलोचनः ।
जानीयाद्वर्तमानां हि रावणस्य निवेशने ॥३१॥
31. yadi nāma sa śūro māṃ rāmo raktāntalocanaḥ ,
jānīyādvartamānāṃ hi rāvaṇasya niveśane.
31. yadi nāma saḥ śūraḥ mām rāmaḥ raktāntalocanaḥ
jānīyāt vartamānām hi rāvaṇasya niveśane
31. yadi nāma saḥ śūraḥ raktāntalocanaḥ rāmaḥ

31. If indeed that brave Rāma, whose eyes have red corners, were to know that I am currently residing in Rāvaṇa's abode...
अनेन तु नृशंसेन रावणेनाधमेन मे ।
समयो यस्तु निर्दिष्टस्तस्य कालो ऽयमागतः ॥३२॥
32. anena tu nṛśaṃsena rāvaṇenādhamena me ,
samayo yastu nirdiṣṭastasya kālo'yamāgataḥ.
32. anena tu nṛśaṃsena rāvaṇena adhamena me samayaḥ
yaḥ tu nirdiṣṭaḥ tasya kālaḥ ayam āgataḥ
32. anena tu nṛśaṃsena adhamena rāvaṇena me yaḥ
samayaḥ nirdiṣṭaḥ tasya ayam kālaḥ āgataḥ
32. But the appointed time which was stipulated for me by this cruel, despicable Rāvaṇa - that time has now come.
अकार्यं ये न जानन्ति नैरृताः पापकारिणः ।
अधर्मात्तु महोत्पातो भविष्यति हि साम्प्रतम् ॥३३॥
33. akāryaṃ ye na jānanti nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ ,
adharmāttu mahotpāto bhaviṣyati hi sāmpratam.
33. akāryam ye na jānanti nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ
adharmāt tu mahotpātaḥ bhaviṣyati hi sāmpratam
33. ye nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ akāryam na jānanti
adharmāt tu hi sāmpratam mahotpātaḥ bhaviṣyati
33. Those rākṣasas who do not understand wrong (akāryam), those evil-doers - indeed, a great catastrophe will now arise from their lack of natural law (adharma).
नैते धर्मं विजानन्ति राक्षसाः पिशिताशनाः ।
ध्रुवं मां प्रातराशार्थे राक्षसः कल्पयिष्यति ॥३४॥
34. naite dharmaṃ vijānanti rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ ,
dhruvaṃ māṃ prātarāśārthe rākṣasaḥ kalpayiṣyati.
34. na ete dharmam vijānanti rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ
dhruvam mām prātarāśārthe rākṣasaḥ kalpayiṣyati
34. ete piśitāśanāḥ rākṣasāḥ dharmam na vijānanti
dhruvam rākṣasaḥ mām prātarāśārthe kalpayiṣyati
34. These flesh-eating demons (rākṣasāḥ) do not understand natural law (dharma). Surely, a demon will prepare me for their morning meal.
साहं कथं करिष्यामि तं विना प्रियदर्शनम् ।
रामं रक्तान्तनयनमपश्यन्ती सुदुःखिता ॥३५॥
35. sāhaṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi taṃ vinā priyadarśanam ,
rāmaṃ raktāntanayanamapaśyantī suduḥkhitā.
35. sā aham katham kariṣyāmi tam vinā priyadarśanam
rāmam raktāntanayanam apaśyantī suduḥkhitā
35. sā suduḥkhitā aham priyadarśanam raktāntanayanam
tam rāmam vinā apaśyantī katham kariṣyāmi
35. How can I, so sorrowful, live without him, the one with a lovely appearance, without seeing Rāma, whose eyes have reddish corners?
यदि कश्चित् प्रदाता मे विषस्याद्य भवेदिह ।
क्षिप्रं वैवस्वतं देवं पश्येयं पतिना विना ॥३६॥
36. yadi kaścit pradātā me viṣasyādya bhavediha ,
kṣipraṃ vaivasvataṃ devaṃ paśyeyaṃ patinā vinā.
36. yadi kaścit pradātā me viṣasya adya bhavet iha
kṣipram vaivasvatam devam paśyeyam patinā vinā
36. yadi iha kaścit viṣasya pradātā me adya bhavet
patinā vinā kṣipram vaivasvatam devam paśyeyam
36. If someone here would give me poison today, I would quickly see the god of death (Vaivasvata), without my husband.
नाजानाज्जीवतीं रामः स मां लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः ।
जानन्तौ तौ न कुर्यातां नोर्व्यां हि मम मार्गणम् ॥३७॥
37. nājānājjīvatīṃ rāmaḥ sa māṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ,
jānantau tau na kuryātāṃ norvyāṃ hi mama mārgaṇam.
37. na ajānāt jīvatīm rāmaḥ saḥ mām lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ
jānantau tau na kuryātām na urvyām hi mama mārgaṇam
37. saḥ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ rāmaḥ mām jīvatīm na ajānāt
tau jānantau hi mama mārgaṇam urvyām na kuryātām
37. Rāma, the elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, did not know that I was alive. If they (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) knew, they would surely search for me on Earth.
नूनं ममैव शोकेन स वीरो लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
देवलोकमितो यातस्त्यक्त्वा देहं महीतले ॥३८॥
38. nūnaṃ mamaiva śokena sa vīro lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ,
devalokamito yātastyaktvā dehaṃ mahītale.
38. nūnam mama eva śokena saḥ vīraḥ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ
devalokam itaḥ yātaḥ tyaktvā deham mahītale
38. nūnam mama eva śokena saḥ vīraḥ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ
itaḥ devalokam mahītale deham tyaktvā yātaḥ
38. Surely, that hero, Lakṣmaṇa's elder brother (Rāma), has departed from here to the celestial world, having abandoned his body on the earth's surface, due to my sorrow.
धन्या देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
मम पश्यन्ति ये नाथं रामं राजीवलोचनम् ॥३९॥
39. dhanyā devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
mama paśyanti ye nāthaṃ rāmaṃ rājīvalocanam.
39. dhanyāḥ devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca paramarṣayaḥ
mama paśyanti ye nātham rāmam rājīvalocanam
39. dhanyāḥ ye devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca paramarṣayaḥ

39. Blessed are the gods, along with the gandharvas, the siddhas, and the great sages, who see my lord Rāma, the lotus-eyed one.
अथ वा न हि तस्यार्थे धर्मकामस्य धीमतः ।
मया रामस्य राजर्षेर्भार्यया परमात्मनः ॥४०॥
40. atha vā na hi tasyārthe dharmakāmasya dhīmataḥ ,
mayā rāmasya rājarṣerbhāryayā paramātmanaḥ.
40. atha vā na hi tasya arthe dharmakāmasya dhīmataḥ
mayā rāmasya rājarṣeḥ bhāryayā paramātmanaḥ
40. atha vā na hi tasya dharmakāmasya dhīmataḥ arthe
mayā rāmasya rājarṣeḥ paramātmanaḥ bhāryayā
40. Or indeed, it is not without purpose concerning that wise one, devoted to his intrinsic nature (dharma), for me, the wife of Rāma, the royal sage, the supreme cosmic person (puruṣa).
दृश्यमाने भवेत् प्रीतः सौहृदं नास्त्यपश्यतः ।
नाशयन्ति कृतघ्रास्तु न रामो नाशयिष्यति ॥४१॥
41. dṛśyamāne bhavet prītaḥ sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaśyataḥ ,
nāśayanti kṛtaghrāstu na rāmo nāśayiṣyati.
41. dṛśyamāne bhavet prītaḥ sauhṛdam na asti apaśyataḥ
nāśayanti kṛtaghnāḥ tu na rāmaḥ nāśayiṣyati
41. dṛśyamāne prītaḥ bhavet; apaśyataḥ sauhṛdam na
asti; kṛtaghnāḥ tu nāśayanti; rāmaḥ na nāśayiṣyati
41. Affection arises when one is seen; there is no friendship for one who is not seen. Ungrateful people indeed destroy (relationships), but Rāma will not destroy (me/our bond).
किं नु मे न गुणाः के चित् किं वा भाग्य क्षयो हि मे ।
याहं सीता वरार्हेण हीना रामेण भामिनी ॥४२॥
42. kiṃ nu me na guṇāḥ ke cit kiṃ vā bhāgya kṣayo hi me ,
yāhaṃ sītā varārheṇa hīnā rāmeṇa bhāminī.
42. kim nu me na guṇāḥ ke cit kim vā bhāgyakṣayaḥ hi
me | yā aham sītā varārheṇa hīnā rāmeṇa bhāminī
42. kim nu me na ke cit guṇāḥ vā me bhāgyakṣayaḥ hi
kim yā aham bhāminī sītā varārheṇa rāmeṇa hīnā
42. What then, do I truly possess no virtues, or is it rather a decline of my fortune? For I, Sita, O noble lady, am bereft of Rama, who is worthy of the most excellent.
श्रेयो मे जीवितान्मर्तुं विहीना या महात्मना ।
रामादक्लिष्टचारित्राच्छूराच्छत्रुनिबर्हणात् ॥४३॥
43. śreyo me jīvitānmartuṃ vihīnā yā mahātmanā ,
rāmādakliṣṭacāritrācchūrācchatrunibarhaṇāt.
43. śreyaḥ me jīvitāt martum vihīnā yā mahātmanā
| rāmāt akliṣṭacāritrāt śūrāt śatrunibarhaṇāt
43. yā mahātmanā akliṣṭacāritrāt śūrāt śatrunibarhaṇāt rāmāt vihīnā,
me jīvitāt martum śreyaḥ
43. It is better for me to die than to live, I who am bereft of the magnanimous (mahātman) Rama, whose character is untainted, who is heroic, and the destroyer of enemies.
अथ वा न्यस्तशस्त्रौ तौ वने मूलफलाशनौ ।
भ्रातरौ हि नर श्रेष्ठौ चरन्तौ वनगोचरौ ॥४४॥
44. atha vā nyastaśastrau tau vane mūlaphalāśanau ,
bhrātarau hi nara śreṣṭhau carantau vanagocarau.
44. atha vā nyastaśastrau tau vane mūlaphalāśanau |
bhrātarau hi naraśreṣṭhau carantau vanagocarau
44. atha vā tau nyastaśastrau mūlaphalāśanau hi
naraśreṣṭhau bhrātarau vane vanagocarau carantau
44. Or perhaps those two brothers, the best among men, having laid aside their weapons in the forest, consuming roots and fruits, are wandering about as forest dwellers.
अथ वा राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना ।
छद्मना घातितौ शूरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥४५॥
45. atha vā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā ,
chadmanā ghātitau śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
45. atha vā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā |
chadmanā ghātitau śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau
45. atha vā rākṣasendreṇa durātmanā rāvaṇena
chadmanā śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ghātitau
45. Or perhaps the two heroic brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, were slain by the evil-minded lord of rākṣasas (rākṣasendra), Ravana, through deception.
साहमेवंगते काले मर्तुमिच्छामि सर्वथा ।
न च मे विहितो मृत्युरस्मिन्दुःखे ऽपि वर्तति ॥४६॥
46. sāhamevaṃgate kāle martumicchāmi sarvathā ,
na ca me vihito mṛtyurasminduḥkhe'pi vartati.
46. sā aham evaṃgate kāle martum icchāmi sarvathā na
ca me vihitaḥ mṛtyuḥ asmin duḥkhe api vartati
46. sā aham evaṃgate kāle sarvathā martum icchāmi ca
asmin duḥkhe api me mṛtyuḥ vihitaḥ na vartati
46. Therefore, in this state, I absolutely wish to die. Yet, death is not ordained for me even amidst this suffering.
धन्याः खलु महात्मानो मुनयः सत्यसंमताः ।
जितात्मानो महाभागा येषां न स्तः प्रियाप्रिये ॥४७॥
47. dhanyāḥ khalu mahātmāno munayaḥ satyasaṃmatāḥ ,
jitātmāno mahābhāgā yeṣāṃ na staḥ priyāpriye.
47. dhanyāḥ khalu mahātmānaḥ munayaḥ satyasaṃmatāḥ
jitātmānaḥ mahābhāgāḥ yeṣām na staḥ priyāpriye
47. khalu dhanyāḥ mahātmānaḥ satyasaṃmatāḥ jitātmānaḥ
mahābhāgāḥ munayaḥ yeṣām priyāpriye na staḥ
47. Indeed, blessed are the great-souled (mahātman) sages (muni) who are esteemed for their truthfulness. They are the highly fortunate ones who have conquered their inner self (ātman), for whom there exist neither likes nor dislikes.
प्रियान्न संभवेद्दुःखमप्रियादधिकं भयम् ।
ताभ्यां हि ये वियुज्यन्ते नमस्तेषां महात्मनाम् ॥४८॥
48. priyānna saṃbhavedduḥkhamapriyādadhikaṃ bhayam ,
tābhyāṃ hi ye viyujyante namasteṣāṃ mahātmanām.
48. priyāt na saṃbhavet duḥkham apriyāt adhikam bhayam
tābhyām hi ye viyujyante namaḥ teṣām mahātmanām
48. priyāt duḥkham na saṃbhavet apriyāt adhikam bhayam
hi ye tābhyām viyujyante teṣām mahātmanām namaḥ
48. From what is dear, sorrow does not arise, nor does excessive fear arise from what is unpleasant. Indeed, salutations (namas) to those great-souled (mahātman) beings who are liberated from both of these (likes and dislikes).
साहं त्यक्ता प्रियेणेह रामेण विदितात्मना ।
प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यामि पापस्य रावणस्य गता वशम् ॥४९॥
49. sāhaṃ tyaktā priyeṇeha rāmeṇa viditātmanā ,
prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi pāpasya rāvaṇasya gatā vaśam.
49. sā aham tyaktā priyeṇa iha rāmeṇa viditātmanā
prāṇān tyakṣyāmi pāpasya rāvaṇasya gatā vaśam
49. sā aham iha priyeṇa rāmeṇa viditātmanā tyaktā
pāpasya rāvaṇasya vaśam gatā prāṇān tyakṣyāmi
49. Having been abandoned here by my beloved Rāma, who is knowledgeable of his inner self (ātman), I, now fallen under the sway of the sinful Rāvaṇa, will give up my life.
