ऋश्यमूकात्तु हनुमान् गत्वा तं मलयं गिरम् ।
आचचक्षे तदा वीरौ कपिराजाय राघवौ ॥१॥

1. Then Hanuman, having indeed gone from Ṛṣyamūka to that Malaya mountain, informed the king of the monkeys (Sugrīva) about the two heroes, the Raghavas (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa).
अयं रामो महाप्राज्ञः संप्राप्तो दृढविक्रमः ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा रामो ऽयं सत्यविक्रमः ॥२॥
2. ayaṃ rāmo mahāprājñaḥ saṃprāpto dṛḍhavikramaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā rāmo'yaṃ satyavikramaḥ.
2. ayam rāmaḥ mahāprājñaḥ samprāptaḥ dṛḍhavikramaḥ |

2. This is the greatly wise Rama, who has arrived possessing firm valor. This Rama, accompanied by his brother Lakshmana, possesses true might.
इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातो रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
धर्मे निगदितश्चैव पितुर्निर्देशपालकः ॥३॥
3. ikṣvākūṇāṃ kule jāto rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
dharme nigaditaścaiva piturnirdeśapālakaḥ.

3. Born in the lineage of the Ikṣvākus, this Rama is the son of Daśaratha. He is also declared to be dedicated to his intrinsic nature (dharma) and a protector of his father's instructions.
तस्यास्य वसतो ऽरण्ये नियतस्य महात्मनः ।
रक्षसापहृता भार्या स त्वां शरणमागतः ॥४॥
4. tasyāsya vasato'raṇye niyatasya mahātmanaḥ ,
rakṣasāpahṛtā bhāryā sa tvāṃ śaraṇamāgataḥ.
4. tasya asya vasataḥ araṇye niyatasya mahātmanaḥ
| rakṣasā apahṛtā bhāryā saḥ tvām śaraṇam āgataḥ
4. tasya asya niyatasya mahātmanaḥ araṇye vasataḥ
(sataḥ) bhāryā rakṣasā apahṛtā saḥ tvām śaraṇam āgataḥ
4. While that great-souled (mahātman) one, disciplined in his vows, was dwelling in the forest, his wife was abducted by a Rākṣasa. He has come to you for refuge.
राजसूयाश्वमेधैश्च वह्निर्येनाभितर्पितः ।
दक्षिणाश्च तथोत्सृष्टा गावः शतसहस्रशः ॥५॥
5. rājasūyāśvamedhaiśca vahniryenābhitarpitaḥ ,
dakṣiṇāśca tathotsṛṣṭā gāvaḥ śatasahasraśaḥ.
5. rājasūyāśvamedhaiḥ ca vahniḥ yena abhitarpitaḥ |
dakṣiṇāḥ ca tathā utsṛṣṭāḥ gāvaḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
5. yena rājasūyāśvamedhaiḥ ca vahniḥ abhitarpitaḥ
tathā ca dakṣiṇāḥ gāvaḥ śatasahasraśaḥ utsṛṣṭāḥ
5. He has indeed propitiated the fire with Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (Vedic rituals). Similarly, hundreds of thousands of cows have been offered as ritual fees.
तपसा सत्यवाक्येन वसुधा येन पालिता ।
स्त्रीहेतोस्तस्य पुत्रो ऽयं रामस्त्वां शरणं गतः ॥६॥
6. tapasā satyavākyena vasudhā yena pālitā ,
strīhetostasya putro'yaṃ rāmastvāṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ.
6. tapasā satyavākyena vasudhā yena pālitā | strīhetoḥ
tasya putraḥ ayam rāmaḥ tvām śaraṇam gataḥ
6. yena tapasā satyavākyena vasudhā pālitā strīhetoḥ

6. This Rama, the son of the one who protected the earth through his asceticism (tapas) and truthful speech, has come to you for refuge because of a woman.
भवता सख्यकामौ तौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
प्रतिगृह्यार्चयस्वेमौ पूजनीयतमाव् उभौ ॥७॥
7. bhavatā sakhyakāmau tau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
pratigṛhyārcayasvemau pūjanīyatamāv ubhau.

| pratigṛhya arcayasva imau pūjanīyatamau ubhau
7. bhavatā sakhyakāmau tau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau

7. You should accept these two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, who seek friendship, and honor both of them, as they are most worthy of reverence.
श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वाक्यं सुग्रीवो हृष्टमानसः ।
भयं स राघवाद्घोरं प्रजहौ विगतज्वरः ॥८॥
8. śrutvā hanumato vākyaṃ sugrīvo hṛṣṭamānasaḥ ,
bhayaṃ sa rāghavādghoraṃ prajahau vigatajvaraḥ.
8. śrutvā hanumataḥ vākyam sugrīvaḥ hṛṣṭamānasaḥ |
bhayam sa rāghavāt ghoram prajahau vigatajvaraḥ
8. hanumataḥ vākyam śrutvā hṛṣṭamānasaḥ vigatajvaraḥ
sa sugrīvaḥ rāghavāt ghoram bhayam prajahau
8. Having heard Hanuman's words, Sugriva, whose mind was gladdened and who was freed from anxiety, abandoned the terrible fear he had of Rama.
स कृत्वा मानुषं रूपं सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः ।
दर्शनीयतमो भूत्वा प्रीत्या प्रोवाच राघवम् ॥९॥
9. sa kṛtvā mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ ,
darśanīyatamo bhūtvā prītyā provāca rāghavam.
9. sa kṛtvā mānuṣam rūpam sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ
| darśanīyatamaḥ bhūtvā prītyā provāca rāghavam
9. sa plavagādhipaḥ sugrīvaḥ mānuṣam rūpam kṛtvā

9. Sugriva, the chief of monkeys, having assumed a human form and become most handsome, spoke to Rama with affection.
भवान्धर्मविनीतश्च विक्रान्तः सर्ववत्सलः ।
आख्याता वायुपुत्रेण तत्त्वतो मे भवद्गुणाः ॥१०॥
10. bhavāndharmavinītaśca vikrāntaḥ sarvavatsalaḥ ,
ākhyātā vāyuputreṇa tattvato me bhavadguṇāḥ.
10. bhavān dharmavinītaḥ ca vikrāntaḥ sarvavatsalaḥ
| ākhyātā vāyuputreṇa tattvataḥ me bhavadguṇāḥ
10. bhavān dharmavinītaḥ ca vikrāntaḥ sarvavatsalaḥ
vāyuputreṇa tattvataḥ me bhavadguṇāḥ ākhyātā
10. You are respectful of natural law (dharma), courageous, and benevolent towards all creatures. Your excellent qualities have been accurately described to me by the son of Vāyu (Hanumān).
तन्ममैवैष सत्कारो लाभश्चैवोत्तमः प्रभो ।
यत्त्वमिच्छसि सौहार्दं वानरेण मया सह ॥११॥
11. tanmamaivaiṣa satkāro lābhaścaivottamaḥ prabho ,
yattvamicchasi sauhārdaṃ vānareṇa mayā saha.
11. tat mama eva eṣaḥ satkāraḥ lābhaḥ ca eva uttamaḥ
prabho | yat tvam icchasi sauhārdaṃ vāṇareṇa mayā saha
11. prabho tat mama eva eṣaḥ satkāraḥ ca eva uttamaḥ
lābhaḥ yat tvam mayā vāṇareṇa saha sauhārdaṃ icchasi
11. Therefore, this is indeed a great honor for me, and the supreme advantage, O Lord, that you desire friendship with me, a monkey.
रोचते यदि वा सख्यं बाहुरेष प्रसारितः ।
गृह्यतां पाणिना पाणिर्मर्यादा वध्यतां ध्रुवा ॥१२॥
12. rocate yadi vā sakhyaṃ bāhureṣa prasāritaḥ ,
gṛhyatāṃ pāṇinā pāṇirmaryādā vadhyatāṃ dhruvā.
12. rocate yadi vā sakhyaṃ bāhuḥ eṣaḥ prasāritaḥ |
gṛhyatāṃ pāṇinā pāṇiḥ maryādā vadhyatāṃ dhruvā
12. yadi vā sakhyaṃ rocate (tarhi) eṣaḥ bāhuḥ prasāritaḥ
pāṇinā pāṇiḥ gṛhyatāṃ dhruvā maryādā vadhyatāṃ
12. If indeed this friendship (sakhya) is agreeable, then this arm of mine is extended (towards you). Let hand be grasped by hand, and a firm, lasting bond be established.
एतत्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवस्य सुभाषितम् ।
संप्रहृष्टमना हस्तं पीडयामास पाणिना ।
हृद्यं सौहृदमालम्ब्य पर्यष्वजत पीडितम् ॥१३॥
13. etattu vacanaṃ śrutvā sugrīvasya subhāṣitam ,
saṃprahṛṣṭamanā hastaṃ pīḍayāmāsa pāṇinā ,
hṛdyaṃ sauhṛdamālambya paryaṣvajata pīḍitam.
13. etat tu vacanaṃ śrutvā sugrīvasya
subhāṣitam | samprahṛṣṭamanāḥ hastaṃ
pīḍayām āsa pāṇinā | hṛdyaṃ
sauhṛdam ālambya paryaṣvajata pīḍitam
13. sugrīvasya etat subhāṣitam vacanaṃ
tu śrutvā samprahṛṣṭamanāḥ (rāmaḥ)
pāṇinā hastaṃ pīḍayām āsa hṛdyaṃ
sauhṛdam ālambya pīḍitam paryaṣvajata
13. Having heard these well-spoken words of Sugrīva, Rāma, with a thoroughly joyful mind, grasped his hand with his own. Sustaining their heartfelt friendship (sauhṛda), he embraced him closely.
ततो हनूमान् संत्यज्य भिक्षुरूपमरिंदमः ।
काष्ठयोः स्वेन रूपेण जनयामास पावकम् ॥१४॥
14. tato hanūmān saṃtyajya bhikṣurūpamariṃdamaḥ ,
kāṣṭhayoḥ svena rūpeṇa janayāmāsa pāvakam.
14. tataḥ hanumān saṃtyajya bhikṣurūpam ariṃdamaḥ
kāṣṭhayoḥ svena rūpeṇa janayāmāsa pāvakam
14. tataḥ ariṃdamaḥ hanumān bhikṣurūpam saṃtyajya
kāṣṭhayoḥ svena rūpeṇa pāvakam janayāmāsa
14. Then, Hanuman, the subduer of foes, abandoning his mendicant disguise, produced fire from two pieces of wood in his true form.
दीप्यमानं ततो वह्निं पुष्पैरभ्यर्च्य सत्कृतम् ।
तयोर्मध्ये तु सुप्रीतो निदधे सुसमाहितः ॥१५॥
15. dīpyamānaṃ tato vahniṃ puṣpairabhyarcya satkṛtam ,
tayormadhye tu suprīto nidadhe susamāhitaḥ.
15. dīpyamānam tataḥ vahṇim puṣpaiḥ abhyarcya satkṛtam
tayoḥ madhye tu suprītaḥ nidadhe susamāhitaḥ
15. tataḥ puṣpaiḥ dīpyamānam satkṛtam vahṇim abhyarcya
suprītaḥ susamāhitaḥ tu tayoḥ madhye nidadhe
15. Then, after worshipping the blazing, honored fire with flowers, Hanuman, being very pleased and perfectly composed, placed it between the two (Rama and Sugriva).
ततो ऽग्निं दीप्यमानं तौ चक्रतुश्च प्रदक्षिणम् ।
सुग्रीवो राघवश्चैव वयस्यत्वमुपागतौ ॥१६॥
16. tato'gniṃ dīpyamānaṃ tau cakratuśca pradakṣiṇam ,
sugrīvo rāghavaścaiva vayasyatvamupāgatau.
16. tataḥ agnim dīpyamānam tau cakratuḥ ca pradakṣiṇam
sugrīvaḥ rāghavaḥ ca eva vayasyatvam upāgatau
16. tataḥ tau dīpyamānam agnim pradakṣiṇam cakratuḥ
ca sugrīvaḥ rāghavaḥ ca eva vayasyatvam upāgatau
16. Then, the two of them (Rama and Sugriva) circumambulated the blazing fire. And thus, Sugriva and Rama certainly attained friendship.
ततः सुप्रीत मनसौ ताव् उभौ हरिराघवौ ।
अन्योन्यमभिवीक्षन्तौ न तृप्तिमुपजग्मतुः ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ suprīta manasau tāv ubhau harirāghavau ,
anyonyamabhivīkṣantau na tṛptimupajagmatuḥ.
17. tataḥ suprītamanasau tau ubhau harirāghavau
anyonyam abhivīkṣantau na tṛptim upajagmatuḥ

17. Then, both Sugriva and Rama, with their minds greatly pleased, kept looking at each other and could not get enough of it (did not attain satisfaction).
ततः सर्वार्थविद्वांसं रामं दशरथात्मजम् ।
सुग्रीवः प्राह तेजस्वी वाक्यमेकमनास्तदा ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sarvārthavidvāṃsaṃ rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam ,
sugrīvaḥ prāha tejasvī vākyamekamanāstadā.
18. tataḥ sarvārthavidvāṃsaṃ rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam
sugrīvaḥ prāha tejasvī vākyam ekamanāḥ tadā
18. tadā tejasvī sugrīvaḥ ekamanāḥ tataḥ sarvārthavidvāṃsaṃ

18. Then, the radiant Sugriva, with a concentrated mind, addressed a single statement to Rama, the son of Dasharatha, who was knowledgeable in all affairs.
