खमुत्पतन्तं तं दृष्ट्वा मैथिली जनकात्मजा ।
दुःखिता परमोद्विग्ना भये महति वर्तिनी ॥१॥

1. Seeing him (Ravana) flying up into the sky, Maithili (Sita), Janaka's daughter, was distressed and extremely agitated, abiding in great fear.
रोषरोदनताम्राक्षी भीमाक्षं राक्षसाधिपम् ।
रुदती करुणं सीता ह्रियमाणेदमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. roṣarodanatāmrākṣī bhīmākṣaṃ rākṣasādhipam ,
rudatī karuṇaṃ sītā hriyamāṇedamabravīt.

2. With her eyes reddened by anger and weeping, Sītā, as she was being carried away, piteously said this to the terrifying-eyed lord of demons.
न व्यपत्रपसे नीच कर्मणानेन रावण ।
ज्ञात्वा विरहितां यो मां चोरयित्वा पलायसे ॥३॥
3. na vyapatrapase nīca karmaṇānena rāvaṇa ,
jñātvā virahitāṃ yo māṃ corayitvā palāyase.
3. na vyapatrapase nīca karmaṇā anena rāvaṇa
jñātvā virahitām yaḥ mām corayitvā palāyase
3. rāvaṇa nīca anena karmaṇā na vyapatrapase

3. O vile Rāvaṇa, are you not ashamed by this act? You who steal me, knowing me to be separated (from my husband), and then flee.
त्वयैव नूनं दुष्टात्मन्भीरुणा हर्तुमिच्छता ।
ममापवाहितो भर्ता मृगरूपेण मायया ।
यो हि मामुद्यतस्त्रातुं सो ऽप्ययं विनिपातितः ॥४॥
4. tvayaiva nūnaṃ duṣṭātmanbhīruṇā hartumicchatā ,
mamāpavāhito bhartā mṛgarūpeṇa māyayā ,
yo hi māmudyatastrātuṃ so'pyayaṃ vinipātitaḥ.
4. tvayā eva nūnam duṣṭātman bhīruṇā
hartum icchatā mama apavāhitaḥ bhartā
mṛgarūpeṇa māyayā yaḥ hi mām udyataḥ
trātum saḥ api ayam vinipātitaḥ
4. duṣṭātman nūnam tvayā eva bhīruṇā
hartum icchatā mama bhartā mṛgarūpeṇa
māyayā apavāhitaḥ hi yaḥ mām trātum
udyataḥ saḥ ayam api vinipātitaḥ
4. O wicked-souled one, it was indeed by you, the cowardly one who wished to abduct (me), that my husband was led away by an illusory deer form (māyā). And even he, who was prepared to rescue me, this very one has been struck down.
परमं खलु ते वीर्यं दृश्यते राक्षसाधम ।
विश्राव्य नामधेयं हि युद्धे नास्ति जिता त्वया ॥५॥
5. paramaṃ khalu te vīryaṃ dṛśyate rākṣasādhama ,
viśrāvya nāmadheyaṃ hi yuddhe nāsti jitā tvayā.
5. paramam khalu te vīryam dṛśyate rākṣasādhama
viśrāvya nāmadheyam hi yuddhe na asti jitā tvayā
5. rākṣasādhama khalu te paramam vīryam dṛśyate hi
nāmadheyam viśrāvya yuddhe tvayā jitā na asti
5. O vilest of demons, indeed your supreme valor is now visible! For, a victory in battle is certainly not achieved by you when you openly declare your name.
ईदृशं गर्हितं कर्म कथं कृत्वा न लज्जसे ।
स्त्रियाश्च हरणं नीच रहिते च परस्य च ॥६॥
6. īdṛśaṃ garhitaṃ karma kathaṃ kṛtvā na lajjase ,
striyāśca haraṇaṃ nīca rahite ca parasya ca.
6. īdr̥śam garhitam karma katham kr̥tvā na lajjase
striyāḥ ca haraṇam nīca rahite ca parasya ca
6. nīca īdr̥śam garhitam karma striyāḥ ca parasya
ca haraṇam rahite ca kr̥tvā katham na lajjase
6. O despicable one, how are you not ashamed after committing such a reprehensible act? It is the abduction of another's wife, and that too, from a deserted place.
कथयिष्यन्ति लोकेषु पुरुषाः कर्म कुत्सितम् ।
सुनृशंसमधर्मिष्ठं तव शौण्डीर्यमानिनः ॥७॥
7. kathayiṣyanti lokeṣu puruṣāḥ karma kutsitam ,
sunṛśaṃsamadharmiṣṭhaṃ tava śauṇḍīryamāninaḥ.
7. kathayiṣyanti lokeṣu puruṣāḥ karma kutsitam
sunr̥śaṃsam adharmiṣṭham tava śauṇḍīryamāninaḥ
7. śauṇḍīryamāninaḥ puruṣāḥ lokeṣu tava kutsitam
sunr̥śaṃsam adharmiṣṭham karma kathayiṣyanti
7. Among people, even those who pride themselves on their valor will recount your despicable, extremely cruel, and most unrighteous (adharmiṣṭha) deed (karma).
धिक् ते शौर्यं च सत्त्वं च यत्त्वया कथितं तदा ।
कुलाक्रोशकरं लोके धिक् ते चारित्रमीदृशम् ॥८॥
8. dhik te śauryaṃ ca sattvaṃ ca yattvayā kathitaṃ tadā ,
kulākrośakaraṃ loke dhik te cāritramīdṛśam.
8. dhik te śauryaṃ ca sattvaṃ ca yat tvayā kathitam
tadā kulākrośakaram loke dhik te cāritram īdr̥śam
8. dhik te śauryaṃ ca sattvaṃ ca yat tvayā tadā kathitam
(tat) loke kulākrośakaram dhik te īdr̥śam cāritram
8. Shame upon your valor and strength (sattva), which you boasted of at that time! It is a disgrace to your family (kula) in the world. Shame upon such conduct (cāritra) of yours!
किं शक्यं कर्तुमेवं हि यज्जवेनैव धावसि ।
मुहूर्तमपि तिष्ठस्व न जीवन्प्रतियास्यसि ॥९॥
9. kiṃ śakyaṃ kartumevaṃ hi yajjavenaiva dhāvasi ,
muhūrtamapi tiṣṭhasva na jīvanpratiyāsyasi.
9. kim śakyam kartum evam hi yat javena eva dhāvasi
muhūrtam api tiṣṭhasva na jīvan pratiyāsyasi
9. yat javena eva dhāvasi,
(ataḥ) evam hi kim kartum śakyam? muhūrtam api tiṣṭhasva.
jīvan na pratiyāsyasi
9. What indeed can be achieved (by this), when you are running away so swiftly? Stand still for even a moment; you will not return alive!
न हि चक्षुःपथं प्राप्य तयोः पार्थिवपुत्रयोः ।
ससैन्यो ऽपि समर्तःस्त्वं मुहूर्तमपि जीवितुम् ॥१०॥
10. na hi cakṣuḥpathaṃ prāpya tayoḥ pārthivaputrayoḥ ,
sasainyo'pi samartaḥstvaṃ muhūrtamapi jīvitum.
10. na hi cakṣuḥpatham prāpya tayoḥ pārthivaputrayoḥ
sasainyaḥ api samarthaḥ tvam muhūrtam api jīvitum
10. tvam sasainyaḥ api tayoḥ pārthivaputrayoḥ cakṣuḥpatham
prāpya muhūrtam api जीवितुम् samarthaḥ na hi
10. Indeed, you, even with your army, would not be capable of surviving even for a moment if you were to come within the range of vision of those two royal princes.
न त्वं तयोः शरस्पर्शं सोढुं शक्तः कथं चन ।
वने प्रज्वलितस्येव स्पर्शमग्नेर्विहंगमः ॥११॥
11. na tvaṃ tayoḥ śarasparśaṃ soḍhuṃ śaktaḥ kathaṃ cana ,
vane prajvalitasyeva sparśamagnervihaṃgamaḥ.
11. na tvam tayoḥ śarasparśam soḍhum śaktaḥ katham cana
vane prajvalitasya iva sparśam agneḥ vihaṅgamaḥ
11. tvam tayoḥ śarasparśam soḍhum katham cana na śaktaḥ
vane prajvalitasya agneḥ sparśam vihaṅgamaḥ iva
11. You will not be able to endure the impact of their arrows in any way, just as a bird cannot endure the touch of a blazing fire in a forest.
साधु कृत्वात्मनः पथ्यं साधु मां मुञ्च रावण ।
मत्प्रधर्षणरुष्टो हि भ्रात्रा सह पतिर्मम ।
विधास्यति विनाशाय त्वं मां यदि न मुञ्चसि ॥१२॥
12. sādhu kṛtvātmanaḥ pathyaṃ sādhu māṃ muñca rāvaṇa ,
matpradharṣaṇaruṣṭo hi bhrātrā saha patirmama ,
vidhāsyati vināśāya tvaṃ māṃ yadi na muñcasi.
12. sādhu kṛtvā ātmanaḥ pathyam sādhu
mām muñca rāvaṇa matpradharṣanaruṣṭaḥ
hi bhrātrā saha patiḥ mama vidhāsyati
vināśāya tvam mām yadi na muñcasi
12. rāvaṇa ātmanaḥ pathyam sādhu kṛtvā
mām sādhu muñca hi yadi tvam mām na
muñcasi mama patiḥ matpradharṣanaruṣṭaḥ
bhrātrā saha vināśāya vidhāsyati
12. O Rāvaṇa, do what is beneficial for yourself; please release me. For if you do not release me, my husband, enraged by my abduction, will surely, along with his brother, bring about your destruction.
येन त्वं व्यवसायेन बलान्मां हर्तुमिच्छसि ।
व्यवसायः स ते नीच भविष्यति निरर्थकः ॥१३॥
13. yena tvaṃ vyavasāyena balānmāṃ hartumicchasi ,
vyavasāyaḥ sa te nīca bhaviṣyati nirarthakaḥ.
13. yena tvam vyavasāyena balāt mām hartum icchasi
vyavasāyaḥ sa te nīca bhaviṣyati nirarthakaḥ
13. nīca tvam yena vyavasāyena balāt mām hartum
icchasi saḥ vyavasāyaḥ te nirarthakaḥ bhaviṣyati
13. O wretch, that endeavor by which you seek to abduct me by force will be entirely futile for you.
न ह्यहं तमपश्यन्ती भर्तारं विबुधोपमम् ।
उत्सहे शत्रुवशगा प्राणान्धारयितुं चिरम् ॥१४॥
14. na hyahaṃ tamapaśyantī bhartāraṃ vibudhopamam ,
utsahe śatruvaśagā prāṇāndhārayituṃ ciram.
14. na hi aham tam apaśyantī bhartāram vibudhopamam
utsahe śatruvaśagā prāṇān dhārayitum ciram
14. hi aham śatruvaśagā tam vibudhopamam bhartāram
apaśyantī prāṇān ciram dhārayitum na utsahe
14. I, having fallen into the enemy's power, cannot possibly sustain my life for long without seeing that husband of mine who is like a god.
न नूनं चात्मनः श्रेयः पथ्यं वा समवेक्षसे ।
मृत्युकाले यथा मर्त्यो विपरीतानि सेवते ॥१५॥
15. na nūnaṃ cātmanaḥ śreyaḥ pathyaṃ vā samavekṣase ,
mṛtyukāle yathā martyo viparītāni sevate.
15. na nūnam ca ātmanaḥ śreyaḥ pathyam vā samavekṣase
mṛtyukāle yathā martyaḥ viparītāni sevate
15. nūnam ca ātmanaḥ śreyaḥ vā pathyam na samavekṣase
yathā martyaḥ mṛtyukāle viparītāni sevate
15. You certainly do not consider what is good or beneficial for your own self (ātman), just as a mortal person at the time of death resorts to actions that are contrary to their own welfare.
मुमूर्षूणां हि सर्वेषां यत् पथ्यं तन्न रोचते ।
पश्यामीव हि कण्ठे त्वां कालपाशावपाशितम् ॥१६॥
16. mumūrṣūṇāṃ hi sarveṣāṃ yat pathyaṃ tanna rocate ,
paśyāmīva hi kaṇṭhe tvāṃ kālapāśāvapāśitam.
16. mumūrṣūṇām hi sarveṣām yat pathyam tat na rocate
paśyāmi iva hi kaṇṭhe tvām kālapāśāvapāśitam
16. hi sarveṣām mumūrṣūṇām yat pathyam tat na rocate
hi iva kaṇṭhe tvām kālapāśāvapāśitam paśyāmi
16. Indeed, what is beneficial is not pleasing to all who are on the verge of death. I clearly see you as if bound by the noose of time (kālapāśa) around your neck.
यथा चास्मिन्भयस्थाने न बिभेषे दशानन ।
व्यक्तं हिरण्मयान् हि त्वं संपश्यसि महीरुहान् ॥१७॥
17. yathā cāsminbhayasthāne na bibheṣe daśānana ,
vyaktaṃ hiraṇmayān hi tvaṃ saṃpaśyasi mahīruhān.
17. yathā ca asmin bhayasthāne na bibheṣe daśānana
vyaktam hiraṇmayān hi tvam sampasyasi mahīruhān
17. ca daśānana yathā asmin bhayasthāne na bibheṣe
hi vyaktam tvam hiraṇmayān mahīruhān sampasyasi
17. O Daśānana (Rāvaṇa), how is it that you do not fear in this dangerous situation? It is clear that you must be seeing golden trees.
नदीं वैरतणीं घोरां रुधिरौघनिवाहिनीम् ।
खड्गपत्रवनं चैव भीमं पश्यसि रावण ॥१८॥
18. nadīṃ vairataṇīṃ ghorāṃ rudhiraughanivāhinīm ,
khaḍgapatravanaṃ caiva bhīmaṃ paśyasi rāvaṇa.
18. nadīm vairataṇīm ghorām rudhiraughanivāhinīm
khaḍgapatravanam ca eva bhīmam paśyasi rāvaṇa
18. rāvaṇa tvam ghorām rudhiraughanivāhinīm vairataṇīm
nadīm ca eva bhīmam khaḍgapatravanam paśyasi
18. O Rāvaṇa, you will see the terrible river Vaitaraṇī, which carries streams of blood, and also the frightening forest of sword-leaves.
तप्तकाञ्चनपुष्पां च वैदूर्यप्रवरच्छदाम् ।
द्रक्ष्यसे शाल्मलीं तीक्ष्णामायसैः कण्टकैश्चिताम् ॥१९॥
19. taptakāñcanapuṣpāṃ ca vaidūryapravaracchadām ,
drakṣyase śālmalīṃ tīkṣṇāmāyasaiḥ kaṇṭakaiścitām.
19. taptakāñcanapuṣpām ca vaidūryapravaracchadām
drakṣyase śālmalīm tīkṣṇām āyasaiḥ kaṇṭakaiḥ citām
19. tvam ca taptakāñcanapuṣpām vaidūryapravaracchadām
tīkṣṇām āyasaiḥ kaṇṭakaiḥ citām śālmalīm drakṣyase
19. And you will see the Śālmalī tree (silk-cotton tree), adorned with flowers of molten gold and excellent leaves of lapis lazuli, sharp and covered with iron thorns.
न हि त्वमीदृशं कृत्वा तस्यालीकं महात्मनः ।
धारितुं शक्ष्यसि चिरं विषं पीत्वेव निर्घृणः ॥२०॥
20. na hi tvamīdṛśaṃ kṛtvā tasyālīkaṃ mahātmanaḥ ,
dhārituṃ śakṣyasi ciraṃ viṣaṃ pītveva nirghṛṇaḥ.
20. na hi tvam īdṛśam kṛtvā tasya alīkam mahātmanaḥ
dhārayitum śakṣyasi ciram viṣam pītvā iva nirghṛṇaḥ
20. hi nirghṛṇa tvam tasya mahātmanaḥ īdṛśam alīkam
kṛtvā viṣam pītvā iva ciram dhārayitum na śakṣyasi
20. Indeed, O merciless one, having committed such an offense against that great soul (ātman), you will surely not be able to survive for long, just like one who has drunk poison.
बद्धस्त्वं कालपाशेन दुर्निवारेण रावण ।
क्व गतो लप्स्यसे शर्म भर्तुर्मम महात्मनः ॥२१॥
21. baddhastvaṃ kālapāśena durnivāreṇa rāvaṇa ,
kva gato lapsyase śarma bharturmama mahātmanaḥ.
21. baddhaḥ tvam kālapāśena durnivāreṇa rāvaṇa |
kva gataḥ lapsyase śarma bhartuḥ mama mahātmanaḥ
21. rāvaṇa tvam durnivāreṇa kālapāśena baddhaḥ asi
kva gataḥ mama mahātmanaḥ bhartuḥ śarma lapsyase
21. O Rāvaṇa, you are bound by the irresistible noose of time/death. Where will you go and obtain peace from my great-souled master (mahātman)?
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण विना भ्रातरमाहवे ।
राक्षसा निहता येन सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥२२॥
22. nimeṣāntaramātreṇa vinā bhrātaramāhave ,
rākṣasā nihatā yena sahasrāṇi caturdaśa.
22. nimeṣāntaramātreṇa vinā bhrātaram āhave |
rākṣasāḥ nihatāḥ yena sahasrāṇi caturdaśa
22. yena bhrātaram vinā āhave caturdaśa
sahasrāṇi rākṣasāḥ nimeṣāntaramātreṇa nihatāḥ
22. By whom, in battle, without his brother's aid, fourteen thousand Rākṣasas were slain in a mere moment.
स कथं राघवो वीरः सर्वास्त्रकुशलो बली ।
न त्वां हन्याच्छरैस्तीक्ष्णैरिष्टभार्यापहारिणम् ॥२३॥
23. sa kathaṃ rāghavo vīraḥ sarvāstrakuśalo balī ,
na tvāṃ hanyāccharaistīkṣṇairiṣṭabhāryāpahāriṇam.
23. sa katham rāghavaḥ vīraḥ sarvāstrakusalaḥ balī |
na tvām hanyāt śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ iṣṭabhāryāpahāriṇam
23. saḥ vīraḥ sarvāstrakusalaḥ balī rāghavaḥ
iṣṭabhāryāpahāriṇam tvām tīkṣṇaiḥ śaraiḥ katham na hanyāt?
23. How can that heroic Rāma (Rāghava), who is powerful and skilled in all weapons, not kill you with his sharp arrows, you who abducted his beloved wife?
एतच्चान्यच्च परुषं वैदेही रावणाङ्कगा ।
भयशोकसमाविष्टा करुणं विललाप ह ॥२४॥
24. etaccānyacca paruṣaṃ vaidehī rāvaṇāṅkagā ,
bhayaśokasamāviṣṭā karuṇaṃ vilalāpa ha.
24. etat ca anyat ca paruṣam vaidehī rāvaṇāṅkagā
| bhayaśokasamāviṣṭā karuṇam vilalāpa ha
24. rāvaṇāṅkagā bhayaśokasamāviṣṭā vaidehī etat
ca anyat ca paruṣam karuṇam ha vilalāpa
24. Vaidehī, who was sitting on Rāvaṇa's lap, overcome with fear and grief, wailed piteously, speaking these and other harsh words.
तथा भृशार्तां बहु चैव भाषिणीं विललाप पूर्वं करुणं च भामिनीम् ।
जहार पापस्तरुणीं विवेष्टतीं नृपात्मजामागतगात्रवेपथुम् ॥२५॥
25. tathā bhṛśārtāṃ bahu caiva bhāṣiṇīṃ vilalāpa pūrvaṃ karuṇaṃ ca bhāminīm ,
jahāra pāpastaruṇīṃ viveṣṭatīṃ nṛpātmajāmāgatagātravepathum.
25. tathā bhṛśārtām bahu ca eva bhāṣiṇīm
vilalāpa pūrvam karuṇam ca bhāminīm
| jahāra pāpaḥ taruṇīm viveṣṭatīm
nṛpātmajām āgatagātravapathum
25. tathā bhṛśārtām bahu ca eva bhāṣiṇīm
bhāminīm (sā) pūrvam karuṇam vilalāpa
pāpaḥ taruṇīm viveṣṭatīm nṛpātmajām
āgatagātravapathum (tām) jahāra
25. Thus, the greatly distressed, profusely speaking, and enraged woman had previously wailed piteously; then the sinner abducted the young princess, who was writhing with a trembling body.
