स तु मोहात् सुसंक्रुद्धः कृतान्तबलचोदितः ।
क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो रावणो सूतमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. sa tu mohāt susaṃkruddhaḥ kṛtāntabalacoditaḥ ,
krodhasaṃraktanayano rāvaṇo sūtamabravīt.

1. But Rāvaṇa, extremely enraged from delusion (moha) and driven by the power of fate (kṛtānta), with his eyes reddened by anger, spoke to the charioteer.
हीनवीर्यमिवाशक्तं पौरुषेण विवर्जितम् ।
भीरुं लघुमिवासत्त्वं विहीनमिव तेजसा ॥२॥
2. hīnavīryamivāśaktaṃ pauruṣeṇa vivarjitam ,
bhīruṃ laghumivāsattvaṃ vihīnamiva tejasā.
2. hīnavīryam iva aśaktam pauruṣeṇa vivarjitam
bhīrum laghum iva asattvam vihīnam iva tejasā
2. saḥ hīnavīryam aśaktam pauruṣeṇa vivarjitam
bhīrum laghum asattvam tejasā vihīnam iva
2. (Rāvaṇa spoke to the charioteer, perceiving him as) one devoid of valor, powerless, bereft of manliness, timid, insignificant, spiritless, and devoid of brilliance.
विमुक्तमिव मायाभिरस्त्रैरिव बहिष्कृतम् ।
मामवज्ञाय दुर्बुद्धे स्वया बुद्ध्या विचेष्टसे ॥३॥
3. vimuktamiva māyābhirastrairiva bahiṣkṛtam ,
māmavajñāya durbuddhe svayā buddhyā viceṣṭase.
3. vimuktam iva māyābhiḥ astraiḥ iva bahiṣkṛtam
mām avajñāya durbuddhe svayā buddhyā viceṣṭase
3. durbuddhe mām avajñāya svayā buddhyā māyābhiḥ
vimuktam iva astraiḥ bahiṣkṛtam iva viceṣṭase
3. O foolish one, (you act) as if devoid of illusions (māyā) and deprived of weapons. Disregarding me, you act by your own intellect (buddhi)!
किमर्थं मामवज्ञाय मच्छन्दमनवेक्ष्य च ।
त्वया शत्रुसमक्षं मे रथो ऽयमपवाहितः ॥४॥
4. kimarthaṃ māmavajñāya macchandamanavekṣya ca ,
tvayā śatrusamakṣaṃ me ratho'yamapavāhitaḥ.
4. kimartham mām avajñāya mat-chandam anavekṣya ca
tvayā śatrusamakṣam me rathaḥ ayam apavāhitaḥ
4. kimartham tvayā mām avajñāya ca mat-chandam
anavekṣya śatrusamakṣam me ayam rathaḥ apavāhitaḥ
4. Why, having disregarded me and not observed my will, has this chariot of mine been driven away by you in front of the enemy?
त्वयाद्य हि ममानार्य चिरकालसमार्जितम् ।
यशो वीर्यं च तेजश्च प्रत्ययश्च विनाशितः ॥५॥
5. tvayādya hi mamānārya cirakālasamārjitam ,
yaśo vīryaṃ ca tejaśca pratyayaśca vināśitaḥ.
5. tvayā adya hi mama anārya cirakālasamārjitam
yaśaḥ vīryam ca tejaḥ ca pratyayaḥ ca vināśitaḥ
5. anārya tvayā adya hi mama cirakālasamārjitam
yaśaḥ vīryam ca tejaḥ ca pratyayaḥ ca vināśitaḥ
5. Indeed, ignoble one, today you have destroyed my fame, valor, glory, and confidence, all of which were acquired over a long time.
शत्रोः प्रख्यातवीर्यस्य रञ्जनीयस्य विक्रमैः ।
पश्यतो युद्धलुब्धो ऽहं कृतः कापुरुषस्त्वया ॥६॥
6. śatroḥ prakhyātavīryasya rañjanīyasya vikramaiḥ ,
paśyato yuddhalubdho'haṃ kṛtaḥ kāpuruṣastvayā.
6. śatroḥ prakhyātavīryasya rañjanīyasya vikramaiḥ
paśyataḥ yuddhalubdhaḥ aham kṛtaḥ kāpuruṣaḥ tvayā
6. tvayā aham yuddhalubdhaḥ śatroḥ prakhyātavīryasya
rañjanīyasya vikramaiḥ paśyataḥ kāpuruṣaḥ kṛtaḥ
6. While that enemy, whose prowess is renowned and whose heroic deeds are to be admired, looks on, you have made me, who am eager for battle, a coward.
यस्त्वं रथमिमं मोहान्न चोद्वहसि दुर्मते ।
सत्यो ऽयं प्रतितर्को मे परेण त्वमुपस्कृतः ॥७॥
7. yastvaṃ rathamimaṃ mohānna codvahasi durmate ,
satyo'yaṃ pratitarko me pareṇa tvamupaskṛtaḥ.
7. yaḥ tvam ratham imam mohāt na ca udvahasi durmate
satyaḥ ayam pratitarkaḥ me pareṇa tvam upaskṛtaḥ
7. durmate yaḥ tvam mohāt imam ratham na ca udvahasi,
me ayam pratitarkaḥ satyaḥ (asti) - tvam pareṇa upaskṛtaḥ (asi)
7. You, ill-minded one, who do not pull this chariot forward out of delusion - this suspicion of mine is true: you have been suborned by the enemy.
न हीदं विद्यते कर्म सुहृदो हितकाङ्क्षिणः ।
रिपूणां सदृशं चैतन्न त्वयैतत् स्वनुष्ठितम् ॥८॥
8. na hīdaṃ vidyate karma suhṛdo hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ,
ripūṇāṃ sadṛśaṃ caitanna tvayaitat svanuṣṭhitam.
8. na hi idam vidyate karma suhṛdaḥ hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
ripūṇām sadṛśam ca etat na tvayā etat suanuṣṭhitam
8. hi idam karma suhṛdaḥ hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ na vidyate.
ca etat ripūṇām sadṛśam (asti).
etat tvayā na suanuṣṭhitam.
8. Indeed, such an act is not found in a well-wishing friend. This action is akin to that of enemies, and it has certainly not been performed well by you.
निवर्तय रथं शीघ्रं यावन्नापैति मे रिपुः ।
यदि वाप्युषितो ऽसि त्वं स्मर्यन्ते यदि वा गुणाः ॥९॥
9. nivartaya rathaṃ śīghraṃ yāvannāpaiti me ripuḥ ,
yadi vāpyuṣito'si tvaṃ smaryante yadi vā guṇāḥ.
9. nivartaya rathaṃ śīghraṃ yāvat na apaiti me ripuḥ
yadi vā api uṣitaḥ asi tvaṃ smaryante yadi vā guṇāḥ
9. tvaṃ rathaṃ śīghraṃ nivartaya,
yāvat me ripuḥ na apaiti.
yadi vā api uṣitaḥ asi,
yadi vā guṇāḥ smaryante.
9. Turn the chariot back quickly, before my enemy retreats! Or if you have truly remained (loyal), and my good qualities are still remembered (by you).
एवं परुषमुक्तस्तु हितबुद्धिरबुद्धिना ।
अब्रवीद् रावणं सूतो हितं सानुनयं वचः ॥१०॥
10. evaṃ paruṣamuktastu hitabuddhirabuddhinā ,
abravīd rāvaṇaṃ sūto hitaṃ sānunayaṃ vacaḥ.
10. evaṃ paruṣam uktaḥ tu hitabuddhiḥ abuddhinā
abravīt rāvaṇaṃ sūtaḥ hitaṃ sānunayaṃ vacaḥ
10. hitabuddhiḥ sūtaḥ tu abuddhinā evaṃ paruṣaṃ uktaḥ ravaṇaṃ sānunayaṃ hitaṃ vacaḥ abravīt.
10. But the well-wishing charioteer, thus addressed harshly by the foolish one, spoke beneficial and humble words to Ravana.
न भीतो ऽस्मि न मूढो ऽस्मि नोपजप्तो ऽस्मि शत्रुभिः ।
न प्रमत्तो न निःस्नेहो विस्मृता न च सत्क्रिया ॥११॥
11. na bhīto'smi na mūḍho'smi nopajapto'smi śatrubhiḥ ,
na pramatto na niḥsneho vismṛtā na ca satkriyā.
11. na bhītaḥ asmi na mūḍhaḥ asmi na upajaptaḥ asmi śatrubhiḥ
na pramattaḥ na niḥsnehaḥ vismṛtā na ca satkriyā
11. aham na bhītaḥ asmi,
na mūḍhaḥ asmi,
na śatrubhiḥ upajaptaḥ asmi.
na pramattaḥ,
na niḥsnehaḥ,
ca na satkriyā vismṛtā.
11. I am not afraid, nor am I deluded. I have not been bribed by enemies. I am not heedless, nor am I devoid of affection, nor have proper actions been forgotten.
मया तु हितकामेन यशश्च परिरक्षता ।
स्नेहप्रस्कन्नमनसा प्रियमित्यप्रियं कृतम् ॥१२॥
12. mayā tu hitakāmena yaśaśca parirakṣatā ,
snehapraskannamanasā priyamityapriyaṃ kṛtam.
12. mayā tu hitakāmena yaśaḥ ca parirakṣatā
snehapraskannamanasā priyam iti apriyaṃ kṛtam
12. tu mayā hitakāmena ca yaśaḥ parirakṣatā snehapraskannamanasā priyam iti apriyaṃ kṛtam.
12. Indeed, by me, a well-wisher, and by one protecting your fame, with a mind overflowing with affection, this unpleasant act was done, (which I considered) beneficial.
नास्मिन्नर्थे महाराज त्वं मां प्रियहिते रतम् ।
कश्चिल् लघुरिवानार्यो दोषतो गन्तुमर्हसि ॥१३॥
13. nāsminnarthe mahārāja tvaṃ māṃ priyahite ratam ,
kaścil laghurivānāryo doṣato gantumarhasi.
13. na asmin arthe mahārāja tvam mām priyahite ratam
kaścid laghuḥ iva anāryaḥ doṣataḥ gantum arhasi
13. O great king, you should not, like some insignificant, ignoble person, consider me at fault in this matter, as I am devoted to your well-being and benefit.
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि यन्निमित्तं मया रथः ।
नदीवेग इवाम्भोभिः संयुगे विनिवर्तितः ॥१४॥
14. śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi yannimittaṃ mayā rathaḥ ,
nadīvega ivāmbhobhiḥ saṃyuge vinivartitaḥ.
14. śrūyatām abhidhāsyāmi yat nimittam mayā rathaḥ
nadīvegaḥ iva ambhobhiḥ saṃyuge vinivartitaḥ
14. Please listen, I shall explain the reason for which I turned back the chariot in battle, just as a river's current is held back by its waters.
श्रमं तवावगच्छामि महता रणकर्मणा ।
न हि ते वीर सौमुख्यं प्रहर्षं वोपधारये ॥१५॥
15. śramaṃ tavāvagacchāmi mahatā raṇakarmaṇā ,
na hi te vīra saumukhyaṃ praharṣaṃ vopadhāraye.
15. śramam tava avagacchāmi mahatā raṇakarmaṇā na
hi te vīra saumukhyam praharṣam vā upadhāraye
15. O hero, I perceive your exhaustion from the great exertions of battle. Indeed, I do not observe in you either a cheerful countenance or a sense of joy.
रथोद्वहनखिन्नाश्च त इमे रथवाजिनः ।
दीना घर्मपरिश्रान्ता गावो वर्षहता इव ॥१६॥
16. rathodvahanakhinnāśca ta ime rathavājinaḥ ,
dīnā gharmapariśrāntā gāvo varṣahatā iva.
16. rathodvahanakhinnāḥ ca te ime rathavājinaḥ
dīnāḥ gharmapariśrāntāḥ gāvaḥ varṣahatāḥ iva
16. And these chariot horses are exhausted from pulling the chariot, appearing distressed and thoroughly worn out by the heat, just like cows beaten down by rain.
निमित्तानि च भूयिष्ठं यानि प्रादुर्भवन्ति नः ।
तेषु तेष्वभिपन्नेषु लक्षयाम्यप्रदक्षिणम् ॥१७॥
17. nimittāni ca bhūyiṣṭhaṃ yāni prādurbhavanti naḥ ,
teṣu teṣvabhipanneṣu lakṣayāmyapradakṣiṇam.
17. nimittāni ca bhūyiṣṭham yāni prādurbhavanti naḥ
teṣu teṣu abhipanneṣu lakṣayāmi apradakṣiṇam
17. yāni bhūyiṣṭham nimittāni ca naḥ prādurbhavanti,
teṣu teṣu abhipanneṣu apradakṣiṇam lakṣayāmi.
17. And the many omens that appear to us, I perceive them as inauspicious when they manifest.
देशकालौ च विज्ञेयौ लक्षणानीङ्गितानि च ।
दैन्यं हर्षश्च खेदश्च रथिनश्च बलाबलम् ॥१८॥
18. deśakālau ca vijñeyau lakṣaṇānīṅgitāni ca ,
dainyaṃ harṣaśca khedaśca rathinaśca balābalam.
18. deśakālau ca vijñeyau lakṣaṇāni iṅgitāni ca
dainyam harṣaḥ ca khedaḥ ca rathinaḥ ca balābalam
18. deśakālau ca vijñeyau; lakṣaṇāni iṅgitāni ca (vijñeyāni); rathinaḥ dainyam harṣaḥ ca khedaḥ ca balābalam ca (vijñeyam).
18. One should ascertain the place and time, as well as the signs and indications (of the enemy). Also (one should know) the charioteer's dejection, joy, weariness, and his strength and weakness.
स्थलनिम्नानि भूमेश्च समानि विषमाणि च ।
युद्धकालश्च विज्ञेयः परस्यान्तरदर्शनम् ॥१९॥
19. sthalanimnāni bhūmeśca samāni viṣamāṇi ca ,
yuddhakālaśca vijñeyaḥ parasyāntaradarśanam.
19. sthalanimnāni bhūmeḥ ca samāni viṣamāṇi ca
yuddhakālaḥ ca vijñeyaḥ parasya antara darśanam
19. bhūmeḥ sthalanimnāni samāni ca viṣamāṇi ca (vijñeyāni).
Yuddhakālaḥ ca vijñeyaḥ,
parasya antara darśanam ca (vijñeyam).
19. And the high and low grounds of the land, both level and uneven, should be known. The proper time for battle should also be ascertained, along with discerning the enemy's vulnerable points.
उपयानापयाने च स्थानं प्रत्यपसर्पणम् ।
सर्वमेतद् रथस्थेन ज्ञेयं रथकुटुम्बिना ॥२०॥
20. upayānāpayāne ca sthānaṃ pratyapasarpaṇam ,
sarvametad rathasthena jñeyaṃ rathakuṭumbinā.
20. upayānāpayāne ca sthānam pratyapasarpaṇam
sarvam etat rathasthena jñeyam rathakuṭumbinā
20. etat sarvam upayānāpayāne ca sthānam pratyapasarpaṇam ca rathasthena rathakuṭumbinā jñeyam.
20. Approaching and retreating, holding one's ground, and tactical repositioning - all this must be understood by the charioteer, the master of the chariot.
तव विश्रामहेतोस्तु तथैषां रथवाजिनाम् ।
रौद्रं वर्जयता खेदं क्षमं कृतमिदं मया ॥२१॥
21. tava viśrāmahetostu tathaiṣāṃ rathavājinām ,
raudraṃ varjayatā khedaṃ kṣamaṃ kṛtamidaṃ mayā.
21. tava viśrāma-hetoḥ tu tathā eṣām ratha-vājinām
raudram varjayatā khedam kṣamam kṛtam idam mayā
21. mayā idam kṣamam kṛtam tava viśrāma-hetoḥ tu
tathā eṣām ratha-vājinām raudram khedam varjayatā
21. Indeed, this appropriate action was taken by me for your rest, and similarly, to prevent severe exhaustion in these chariots and horses.
न मया स्वेच्छया वीर रथो ऽयमपवाहितः ।
भर्तृस्नेहपरीतेन मयेदं यत्कृतं विभो ॥२२॥
22. na mayā svecchayā vīra ratho'yamapavāhitaḥ ,
bhartṛsnehaparītena mayedaṃ yatkṛtaṃ vibho.
22. na mayā sva-icchayā vīra rathaḥ ayam apavāhitaḥ
bhartṛ-sneha-parītena mayā idam yat kṛtam vibho
22. vīra vibho! ayam rathaḥ mayā sva-icchayā na apavāhitaḥ.
yat idam kṛtam,
tat bhartṛ-sneha-parītena mayā (kṛtam).
22. O hero, this chariot was not driven by me of my own accord. Whatever action I have taken, O lord, was done because I was overwhelmed by affection for my master.
आज्ञापय यथातत्त्वं वक्ष्यस्यरिनिषूदन ।
तत् करिष्याम्यहं वीरं गतानृण्येन चेतसा ॥२३॥
23. ājñāpaya yathātattvaṃ vakṣyasyariniṣūdana ,
tat kariṣyāmyahaṃ vīraṃ gatānṛṇyena cetasā.
23. ājñāpaya yathā-tattvam vakṣyasi ariniṣūdana
tat kariṣyāmi aham vīram gata-ānṛṇyena cetasā
23. ariniṣūdana! yathā-tattvam ājñāpaya.
yat vakṣyasi,
tat aham vīram gata-ānṛṇyena cetasā kariṣyāmi.
23. O destroyer of enemies, instruct me precisely as it should be. Whatever you will say, that I will perform heroically with a mind free from obligation.
संतुष्टस्तेन वाक्येन रावणस्तस्य सारथेः ।
प्रशस्यैनं बहुविधं युद्धलुब्धो ऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥२४॥
24. saṃtuṣṭastena vākyena rāvaṇastasya sāratheḥ ,
praśasyainaṃ bahuvidhaṃ yuddhalubdho'bravīdidam.
24. santuṣṭaḥ tena vākyena rāvaṇaḥ tasya sāratheḥ
praśasya enam bahu-vidham yuddha-lubdhaḥ abravīt idam
24. tena vākyena santuṣṭaḥ yuddha-lubdhaḥ rāvaṇaḥ tasya sāratheḥ enam bahu-vidham praśasya idam abravīt.
24. Pleased by that speech of his charioteer, Rāvaṇa, who was eager for battle, praised him in many ways and then said this.
रथं शीघ्रमिमं सूत राघवाभिमुखं कुरु ।
नाहत्वा समरे शत्रून्निवर्तिष्यति रावणः ॥२५॥
25. rathaṃ śīghramimaṃ sūta rāghavābhimukhaṃ kuru ,
nāhatvā samare śatrūnnivartiṣyati rāvaṇaḥ.
25. ratham śīghram imam sūta rāghavābhimukham kuru
na ahatvā samare śatrūn nivartiṣyati rāvaṇaḥ
25. Charioteer, quickly turn this chariot towards Rāghava (Rāma). Rāvaṇa will not return from battle without having killed his enemies.
एवमुक्त्वा ततस्तुष्टो रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
ददौ तस्य शुभं ह्येकं हस्ताभरणमुत्तमम् ॥२६॥
26. evamuktvā tatastuṣṭo rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
dadau tasya śubhaṃ hyekaṃ hastābharaṇamuttamam.
26. evam uktvā tataḥ tuṣṭaḥ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
dadau tasya śubham hi ekam hastābharaṇam uttamam
26. Having spoken thus, Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, being pleased, then gave him an excellent and auspicious arm ornament.
ततो द्रुतं रावणवाक्यचोदितः प्रचोदयामास हयान् स सारथिः ।
स राक्षसेन्द्रस्य ततो महारथः क्षणेन रामस्य रणाग्रतो ऽभवत् ॥२७॥
27. tato drutaṃ rāvaṇavākyacoditaḥ pracodayāmāsa hayān sa sārathiḥ ,
sa rākṣasendrasya tato mahārathaḥ kṣaṇena rāmasya raṇāgrato'bhavat.
27. tataḥ drutam rāvaṇavākyacoditaḥ
pracodayāmāsa hayān saḥ sārathiḥ
saḥ rākṣasendrasya tataḥ mahārathaḥ
kṣaṇena rāmasya raṇāgrataḥ abhavat
27. Then, swiftly urged by Rāvaṇa's words, that charioteer drove the horses. Consequently, the great chariot of the lord of rākṣasas appeared before Rāma at the forefront of the battle in an instant.
