But when that horse Vedic ritual (yajña) of the great-souled one was completed, the gods, having received their respective shares, returned from where they had come.
समाप्तदीक्षानियमः पत्नीगणसमन्वितः ।

The king, having completed his vows of consecration (dīkṣā) and accompanied by his multitude of wives, entered the city along with his servants, army, and vehicles.
यथार्हं पूजितास्तेन राज्ञा वै पृथिवीश्वराः ।
मुदिताः प्रययुर्देशान्प्रणम्य मुनिपुंगवम् ॥३॥

The lords of the earth were duly honored by that king. Delighted, they departed to their respective countries after bowing to the foremost sage.

When the lords of the earth had departed, the glorious King Daśaratha, having placed the best of the Brahmins (dvija) at the forefront, re-entered his city.
शान्तया प्रययौ सार्धमृश्यशृङ्गः सुपूजितः ।
अन्वीयमानो राज्ञाथ सानुयात्रेण धीमता ॥५॥

Highly honored, Ṛṣyaśṛṅga departed with Śāntā, accompanied by the intelligent king and his retinue.
कौसल्याजनयद् रामं दिव्यलक्षणसंयुतम् ।
विष्णोरर्धं महाभागं पुत्रमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् ॥६॥

Kausalyā gave birth to Rāma, a son endowed with divine characteristics, a greatly fortunate one, who was a part of Viṣṇu, and the delight of the Ikṣvāku lineage.

Kaushalya was adorned by that son of immeasurable splendor, just as Aditi shines by Indra (vajrapāṇinā), the chief of the gods.

From Kaikeyi was born Bharata, of true valor, who was directly a fourth portion of Vishnu (viṣṇu), endowed with all good qualities.
अथ लक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नौ सुमित्राजनयत् सुतौ ।

Then Sumitra bore two sons, Lakshmana and Shatrughna, both valiant, skilled in all weapons, and endowed with half the essence of Vishnu (viṣṇu).
राज्ञः पुत्रा महात्मानश्चत्वारो जज्ञिरे पृथक् ।
गुणवन्तो ऽनुरूपाश्च रुच्या प्रोष्ठपदोपमाः ॥१०॥

10.
The king's four great-souled (mahātman) sons were born individually, all virtuous, well-matched, and comparable to the Proṣṭhapada stars in their brilliance.
अतीत्यैकादशाहं तु नाम कर्म तथाकरोत् ।
ज्येष्ठं रामं महात्मानं भरतं कैकयीसुतम् ॥११॥

After the eleventh day had passed, he performed the naming ceremony (karma). He named the eldest Rama, and the noble-minded (mahātman) Bharata, son of Kaikeyī.
सौमित्रिं लक्ष्मणमिति शत्रुघ्नमपरं तथा ।
वसिष्ठः परमप्रीतो नामानि कृतवांस्तदा ।
तेषां जन्मक्रियादीनि सर्वकर्माण्यकारयत् ॥१२॥
वसिष्ठः परमप्रीतो नामानि कृतवांस्तदा ।

12. saumitriṃ lakṣmaṇamiti śatrughnamaparaṃ tathā ,
vasiṣṭhaḥ paramaprīto nāmāni kṛtavāṃstadā ,
teṣāṃ janmakriyādīni sarvakarmāṇyakārayat.

Similarly, the greatly pleased Vasishtha named Sumitra's son Lakshmana, and another, Shatrughna. He then performed their naming ceremonies and all other rites (karma), beginning with the birth ceremonies.
तेषां केतुरिव ज्येष्ठो रामो रतिकरः पितुः ।
बभूव भूयो भूतानां स्वयम्भूरिव संमतः ॥१३॥

13. teṣāṃ keturiva jyeṣṭho rāmo ratikaraḥ pituḥ ,

13.
Among them, the eldest Rama became like a banner [of distinction] for his father, bringing him great joy. He was also regarded with great esteem by all beings, much like Svayambhu (the Self-Existent).

All of them were knowers of the Vedas and valiant warriors. All were devoted to the welfare of the people. All were endowed with knowledge, and all were enriched with good qualities.
तेषामपि महातेजा रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
बाल्यात् प्रभृति सुस्निग्धो लक्ष्मणो लक्ष्मिवर्धनः ॥१५॥

Among them, Lakshmana, the augmenter of prosperity, was exceedingly devoted from childhood onwards to the greatly effulgent Rama, whose valor was unfailing.
रामस्य लोकरामस्य भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य नित्यशः ।

Lakshmana constantly performed every pleasing service for Rama, his elder brother who delighted the people, becoming even to Rama like another body.
लक्ष्मणो लक्ष्मिसंपन्नो बहिःप्राण इवापरः ।
न च तेन विना निद्रां लभते पुरुषोत्तमः ।
मृष्टमन्नमुपानीतमश्नाति न हि तं विना ॥१७॥
न च तेन विना निद्रां लभते पुरुषोत्तमः ।
मृष्टमन्नमुपानीतमश्नाति न हि तं विना ॥१७॥
17. lakṣmaṇo lakṣmisaṃpanno bahiḥprāṇa ivāparaḥ ,
na ca tena vinā nidrāṃ labhate puruṣottamaḥ ,
mṛṣṭamannamupānītamaśnāti na hi taṃ vinā.
na ca tena vinā nidrāṃ labhate puruṣottamaḥ ,

lakṣmīsampannaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ aparaḥ
bahiḥprāṇaḥ iva (āsīt) ca puruṣottamaḥ
tena vinā nidrām na labhate upanītam
mṛṣṭam annam api tam vinā na hi aśnāti
bahiḥprāṇaḥ iva (āsīt) ca puruṣottamaḥ
tena vinā nidrām na labhate upanītam
mṛṣṭam annam api tam vinā na hi aśnāti
17.
Lakshmana, endowed with auspicious signs, was like another external life-breath. And without him, Rama, the best among men (puruṣa), would not obtain sleep. Indeed, he would not eat delicious food even if it were brought to him, without him.
यदा हि हयमारूढो मृगयां याति राघवः ।
तदैनं पृष्ठतो ऽभ्येति सधनुः परिपालयन् ॥१८॥

18. yadā hi hayamārūḍho mṛgayāṃ yāti rāghavaḥ ,
tadainaṃ pṛṣṭhato'bhyeti sadhanuḥ paripālayan.

hi yadā rāghavaḥ hayam āruḍhaḥ mṛgayām yāti,
tadā (lakṣmaṇaḥ) enam pṛṣṭhataḥ sadhanuḥ paripālayan abhyeti
tadā (lakṣmaṇaḥ) enam pṛṣṭhataḥ sadhanuḥ paripālayan abhyeti
18.
Indeed, whenever Rama, a descendant of Raghu, mounted a horse and went hunting, Lakshmana would then follow him from behind, protecting him with his bow.
भरतस्यापि शत्रुघ्नो लक्ष्मणावरजो हि सः ।
प्राणैः प्रियतरो नित्यं तस्य चासीत्तथा प्रियः ॥१९॥

19. bharatasyāpi śatrughno lakṣmaṇāvarajo hi saḥ ,

Shatrughna, who was Lakshmana's younger brother, was also especially connected to Bharata. He (Shatrughna) was always dearer than life to Bharata, and thus equally beloved by him.

King Dasharatha, with his four greatly fortunate and beloved sons, became supremely pleased, just like Brahma (pitāmaha) with the gods.

When they (the sons) were all endowed with knowledge and fully possessed of virtues, they were modest, renowned, all-knowing, and far-sighted.

Then King Dasharatha, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, accompanied by his preceptors and relatives, began to deliberate concerning their marriages.

While that great-souled one (ātman) was deliberating among his ministers, the greatly effulgent great sage Viśvāmitra approached.

Desiring an audience with the king, he (Viśvāmitra) said to the doorkeepers, "Quickly announce that I, Kauśika, the son of Gādhi, have arrived."

Having heard his words, all of them, with bewildered minds and impelled by that command, rushed to the king's palace.

Having gone to the king's palace, they then announced the arrival of the sage Viśvāmitra to King Ikṣvāku (Daśaratha).

Having heard their words, the king, accompanied by his chief priest and with a concentrated mind, went forth to meet him, greatly delighted, just as Vāsava (Indra) would meet Brahmā (brahman).

The king, having seen the ascetic who was blazing with splendor and steadfast in his vows, then, with a joyful face, offered the oblation (arghya).

कुशलं चाव्ययं चैव पर्यपृच्छन्नराधिपम् ॥२९॥

Having accepted the oblation (arghya) from the king, performed with the ritual actions prescribed by the sacred texts, the ascetic then inquired of the ruler (narādhipa) about his welfare and lasting prosperity.

And having approached Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among sages (munipuṅgava) spoke words of welfare. He also addressed those illustrious sages appropriately.

All of them, with joyful minds, entered the palace of that king. They were honored there and seated appropriately.

Then the greatly joyful king, extremely generous, said to the great sage Viśvāmitra, honoring him.

प्रनष्टस्य यथा लाभो यथा हर्षो महोदये ।

Just as the attainment of nectar, just as rain upon a waterless land, just as the birth of a son to a childless man from a suitable wife, just as the recovery of something lost, and just as joy in a great prosperity - similarly, I consider your arrival a welcome, O great sage.

What supreme desire shall I fulfill for you? What should I do, delighted as I am? You are indeed a worthy recipient for me, O Brahmin; fortunately, you, the righteous one, have arrived. Today, my birth has become fruitful, and my life well-lived.
पूर्वं राजर्षिशब्देन तपसा द्योतितप्रभः ।

Formerly, your radiance was illumined by asceticism (tapas), and you were known as a royal sage (rājarṣi). Now, having attained the state of a brahmin sage (brahmarṣi), you are to be honored by me in many ways.

O Brahmin, this is truly a wondrous, supremely purifying experience for me. Moreover, O Lord, by merely seeing you, I feel as if I have arrived at a sacred place.

iti (ātmanvatā vinītam uktam) hṛdayasukham ca śrutisukham vākyam niśamya,
(prathitaguṇayaśāḥ guṇaiḥ viśiṣṭaḥ) paramaḥ ṛṣiḥ paramam harṣam jagāma
(prathitaguṇayaśāḥ guṇaiḥ viśiṣṭaḥ) paramaḥ ṛṣiḥ paramam harṣam jagāma
39.
Having heard these words, which were pleasing to the heart and agreeable to the ear, spoken humbly by the self-possessed (ātman), the great sage, whose fame for his qualities (guṇa) was widespread and who was distinguished by his virtues, attained supreme joy.
