कृताभिषेको रामस्तु सीता सौमित्रिरेव च ।
तस्माद्गोदावरीतीरात्ततो जग्मुः स्वमाश्रमम् ॥१॥
1. kṛtābhiṣeko rāmastu sītā saumitrireva ca ,

1. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana (Saumitri), having indeed performed their ritual bath, then departed from that bank of the Godavari and went to their own hermitage (āśrama).
आश्रमं तमुपागम्य राघवः सहलक्ष्मणः ।
कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकं कर्म पर्णशालामुपागमत् ॥२॥
2. āśramaṃ tamupāgamya rāghavaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ,
kṛtvā paurvāhṇikaṃ karma parṇaśālāmupāgamat.
2. āśramam tam upāgamya rāghavaḥ saha-lakṣmaṇaḥ

2. Having approached that hermitage (āśrama), Rama (Rāghava) with Lakshmana, after performing the morning rituals (karma), went to the leaf-hut.
स रामः पर्णशालायामासीनः सह सीतया ।
विरराज महाबाहुश्चित्रया चन्द्रमा इव ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा चकार विविधाः कथाः ॥३॥
3. sa rāmaḥ parṇaśālāyāmāsīnaḥ saha sītayā ,
virarāja mahābāhuścitrayā candramā iva ,
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā cakāra vividhāḥ kathāḥ.
3. saḥ rāmaḥ parṇaśālāyām āsīnaḥ saha
sītayā virarāja mahābāhuḥ
citrayā candramāḥ iva lakṣmaṇena saha
bhrātrā cakāra vividhāḥ kathāḥ

3. That mighty-armed Rāma, seated with Sītā in their leaf-hut, shone brightly like the moon accompanied by the star Citrā. He also conversed on various topics with his brother Lakṣmaṇa.
तदासीनस्य रामस्य कथासंसक्तचेतसः ।
तं देशं राक्षसी का चिदाजगाम यदृच्छया ॥४॥
4. tadāsīnasya rāmasya kathāsaṃsaktacetasaḥ ,
taṃ deśaṃ rākṣasī kā cidājagāma yadṛcchayā.
4. tadā āsīnasya rāmasya kathāsaṃsaktacetasaḥ
tam deśam rākṣasī kā cit ājagāma yadṛcchayā
4. tadā kathāsaṃsaktacetasaḥ āsīnasya rāmasya,
kā cit rākṣasī tam deśam yadṛcchayā ājagāma.
4. As Rāma was thus seated, his mind engaged in conversation, a certain Rākṣasī (female demon) happened to arrive in that region by chance.
सा तु शूर्पणखा नाम दशग्रीवस्य रक्षसः ।
भगिनी राममासाद्य ददर्श त्रिदशोपमम् ॥५॥
5. sā tu śūrpaṇakhā nāma daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ ,
bhaginī rāmamāsādya dadarśa tridaśopamam.
5. sā tu śūrpaṇakhā nāma daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ
bhaginī rāmam āsādya dadarśa tridaśopamam
5. sā tu śūrpaṇakhā nāma,
daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ bhaginī,

5. That Rākṣasī, whose name was Śūrpaṇakhā, the sister of the Rākṣasa Daśagrīva, approached Rāma and saw him, who was comparable to a deity.
सिंहोरस्कं महाबाहुं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम् ।
सुकुमारं महासत्त्वं पार्थिवव्यञ्जनान्वितम् ॥६॥
6. siṃhoraskaṃ mahābāhuṃ padmapatranibhekṣaṇam ,
sukumāraṃ mahāsattvaṃ pārthivavyañjanānvitam.
6. siṃhoraskam mahābāhum padmapatranibhekṣaṇam
sukumāram mahāsattvam pārthivavyañjanānvitam
6. siṃhoraskam,
mahābāhum,
padmapatranibhekṣaṇam,
sukumāram,
mahāsattvam,
pārthivavyañjanānvitam [rāmam dadarśa].
6. [She saw him as] having a lion-like chest, mighty arms, eyes resembling lotus petals, extremely delicate, possessing great strength and noble character, and endowed with the marks of a king.
राममिन्दीवरश्यामं कन्दर्पसदृशप्रभम् ।
बभूवेन्द्रोपमं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसी काममोहिता ॥७॥
7. rāmamindīvaraśyāmaṃ kandarpasadṛśaprabham ,
babhūvendropamaṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasī kāmamohitā.
7. rāmam indīvara-śyāmam kandarpa-sadṛśa-prabham
babhūva indra-upamam dṛṣṭvā rākṣasī kāma-mohitā
7. kāma-mohitā rākṣasī indīvara-śyāmam
kandarpa-sadṛśa-prabham indra-upamam rāmam dṛṣṭvā babhūva
7. A demoness, bewildered by desire (kāma), became captivated upon seeing Rāma, who was dark like a blue lotus, radiant like the god of love (Kandarpa), and resembled Indra.
सुमुखं दुर्मुखी रामं वृत्तमध्यं महोदरी ।
विशालाक्षं विरूपाक्षी सुकेशं ताम्रमूर्धजा ॥८॥
8. sumukhaṃ durmukhī rāmaṃ vṛttamadhyaṃ mahodarī ,
viśālākṣaṃ virūpākṣī sukeśaṃ tāmramūrdhajā.
8. sumukham durmukhī rāmam vṛtta-madhyam mahodarī
viśāla-akṣam virūpa-akṣī sukeśam tāmra-mūrdhajā
8. durmukhī mahodarī virūpa-akṣī tāmra-mūrdhajā (sā) sumukham
vṛtta-madhyam viśāla-akṣam sukeśam rāmam (dṛṣṭvā)
8. (Describing the contrast) While Rāma was fair-faced, slender-waisted, broad-eyed, and had beautiful hair, she (the demoness) was ugly-faced, large-bellied, ugly-eyed, and had coppery hair.
प्रियरूपं विरूपा सा सुस्वरं भैरवस्वना ।
तरुणं दारुणा वृद्धा दक्षिणं वामभाषिणी ॥९॥
9. priyarūpaṃ virūpā sā susvaraṃ bhairavasvanā ,
taruṇaṃ dāruṇā vṛddhā dakṣiṇaṃ vāmabhāṣiṇī.
9. priya-rūpam virūpā sā susvaram bhairava-svanā
taruṇam dāruṇā vṛddhā dakṣiṇam vāma-bhāṣiṇī
9. sā virūpā bhairava-svanā dāruṇā vṛddhā vāma-bhāṣiṇī (ca)
priya-rūpam susvaram taruṇam dakṣiṇam rāmam (dṛṣṭvā)
9. She was ugly, with a terrifying voice, terrible, old, and spoke offensively, while Rāma was of beautiful form, had a melodious voice, was youthful, and amiable.
न्यायवृत्तं सुदुर्वृत्ता प्रियमप्रियदर्शना ।
शरीरजसमाविष्टा राक्षसी राममब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. nyāyavṛttaṃ sudurvṛttā priyamapriyadarśanā ,
śarīrajasamāviṣṭā rākṣasī rāmamabravīt.
10. nyāya-vṛttam su-durvṛttā priyam apriya-darśanā
śarīraja-samāviṣṭā rākṣasī rāmam abravīt
10. su-durvṛttā apriya-darśanā śarīraja-samāviṣṭā
rākṣasī nyāya-vṛttam priyam rāmam abravīt
10. The extremely ill-behaved demoness, who was unpleasant to behold and overwhelmed by the god of love (śarīraja), spoke to Rāma, who was of righteous conduct and charming.
जटी तापसरूपेण सभार्यः शरचापधृक् ।
आगतस्त्वमिमं देशं कथं राक्षससेवितम् ॥११॥
11. jaṭī tāpasarūpeṇa sabhāryaḥ śaracāpadhṛk ,
āgatastvamimaṃ deśaṃ kathaṃ rākṣasasevitam.
11. jaṭī tāpasarūpeṇa sabhāryaḥ śaracāpadhṛk
āgataḥ tvam imam deśam katham rākṣasasevitam
11. tvam jaṭī tāpasarūpeṇa sabhāryaḥ śaracāpadhṛk
imam rākṣasasevitam deśam katham āgataḥ
11. You, an ascetic with matted hair, accompanied by your wife and holding a bow and arrows, how have you come to this region frequented by demons (rākṣasas)?
एवमुक्तस्तु राक्षस्या शूर्पणख्या परंतपः ।
ऋजुबुद्धितया सर्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥१२॥
12. evamuktastu rākṣasyā śūrpaṇakhyā paraṃtapaḥ ,
ṛjubuddhitayā sarvamākhyātumupacakrame.
12. evam uktaḥ tu rākṣasyā śūrpaṇakhyā paraṃtapaḥ
ṛjubuddhitayā sarvam ākhyātum upacakrame
12. raākṣasyā śūrpaṇakhyā evam uktaḥ tu paraṃtapaḥ
ṛjubuddhitayā sarvam ākhyātum upacakrame
12. When thus addressed by the female demon (rākṣasī) Surpanakha, the tormentor of foes (paraṃtapaḥ) began to narrate everything, due to his straightforward nature (ṛjubuddhitayā).
आसीद्दशरथो नाम राजा त्रिदशविक्रमः ।
तस्याहमग्रजः पुत्रो रामो नाम जनैः श्रुतः ॥१३॥
13. āsīddaśaratho nāma rājā tridaśavikramaḥ ,
tasyāhamagrajaḥ putro rāmo nāma janaiḥ śrutaḥ.
13. āsīt daśarathaḥ nāma rājā tridaśavikramaḥ tasya
aham agrajaḥ putraḥ rāmaḥ nāma janaiḥ śrutaḥ
13. daśarathaḥ nāma rājā tridaśavikramaḥ āsīt tasya
aham agrajaḥ putraḥ rāmaḥ nāma janaiḥ śrutaḥ
13. There was a king named Dasharatha, whose valor was like that of the gods. I am his eldest son, known among people by the name Rama.
भ्रातायं लक्ष्मणो नाम यवीयान्मामनुव्रतः ।
इयं भार्या च वैदेही मम सीतेति विश्रुता ॥१४॥
14. bhrātāyaṃ lakṣmaṇo nāma yavīyānmāmanuvrataḥ ,
iyaṃ bhāryā ca vaidehī mama sīteti viśrutā.
14. bhrātā ayam lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma yavīyān mām anuvrataḥ
iyam bhāryā ca vaidehī mama sītā iti viśrutā
14. ayam bhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma yavīyān mām anuvrataḥ
ca iyam mama bhāryā vaidehī iti sītā viśrutā
14. This is my younger brother named Lakshmana, who is devoted to me. And this is my wife, the princess of Videha (vaidehī), renowned as Sita.
नियोगात्तु नरेन्द्रस्य पितुर्मातुश्च यन्त्रितः ।
धर्मार्थं धर्मकाङ्क्षी च वनं वस्तुमिहागतः ॥१५॥
15. niyogāttu narendrasya piturmātuśca yantritaḥ ,
dharmārthaṃ dharmakāṅkṣī ca vanaṃ vastumihāgataḥ.
15. niyogāt tu narendrasya pituḥ mātuḥ ca yantritaḥ
dharmārtham dharmakāṅkṣī ca vanam vastum iha āgataḥ
15. tu narendrasya pituḥ ca mātuḥ niyogāt yantritaḥ,
ca dharmakāṅkṣī (aham),
dharmārtham iha vanam vastum āgataḥ
15. Indeed, bound by the command of the king, my father, and my mother, and desirous of upholding righteousness (dharma), I have come here to dwell in the forest for the sake of fulfilling my intrinsic nature (dharma).
त्वां तु वेदितुमिच्छामि कथ्यतां कासि कस्य वा ।
इह वा किंनिमित्तं त्वमागता ब्रूहि तत्त्वतः ॥१६॥
16. tvāṃ tu veditumicchāmi kathyatāṃ kāsi kasya vā ,
iha vā kiṃnimittaṃ tvamāgatā brūhi tattvataḥ.
16. tvām tu veditum icchāmi kathyatām kā asi kasya
vā iha vā kimnimittam tvam āgatā brūhi tattvataḥ
16. tu (aham) tvām veditum icchāmi.
(tvam) kā asi,
vā kasya (asi),
(iti) kathyatām.
vā kimnimittam tvam iha āgatā (asi iti) tattvataḥ brūhi.
16. Indeed, I wish to know you. Please tell me, who are you, and to whom do you belong? Also, for what reason have you come here? Speak the truth (tattvataḥ).
साब्रवीद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षसी मदनार्दिता ।
श्रूयतां राम वक्ष्यामि तत्त्वार्थं वचनं मम ॥१७॥
17. sābravīdvacanaṃ śrutvā rākṣasī madanārditā ,
śrūyatāṃ rāma vakṣyāmi tattvārthaṃ vacanaṃ mama.
17. sā abravīt vacanam śrutvā rākṣasī madanārditā
śrūyatām rāma vakṣyāmi tattvārtham vacanam mama
17. sā rākṣasī madanārditā (sati) (mama vacanam) śrutvā (evam) abravīt.
"(he) rāma,
śrūyatām! mama tattvārtham vacanam (idam) vakṣyāmi.
"
17. Having heard [his words], the demoness, tormented by love, spoke. 'O Rāma,' she said, 'listen! I will speak my words, which convey the essential truth (tattvārtha).'
अहं शूर्पणखा नाम राक्षसी कामरूपिणी ।
अरण्यं विचरामीदमेका सर्वभयंकरा ॥१८॥
18. ahaṃ śūrpaṇakhā nāma rākṣasī kāmarūpiṇī ,
araṇyaṃ vicarāmīdamekā sarvabhayaṃkarā.
18. ahaṃ śūrpaṇakhā nāma rākṣasī kāmarūpiṇī
araṇyaṃ vicarāmi idam ekā sarvabhayaṅkarā
18. ahaṃ nāma śūrpaṇakhā kāmarūpiṇī rākṣasī
ekā sarvabhayaṅkarā idam araṇyaṃ vicarāmi
18. I am a demoness named Shurpanakha, capable of assuming any form at will. I wander alone in this forest, terrifying to all.
रावणो नाम मे भ्राता राक्षसो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
प्रवृद्धनिद्रश्च सदा कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः ॥१९॥
19. rāvaṇo nāma me bhrātā rākṣaso rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
pravṛddhanidraśca sadā kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ.
19. rāvaṇaḥ nāma me bhrātā rākṣasaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
pravṛddhanidraḥ ca sadā kumbhakarṇaḥ mahābalaḥ
19. me bhrātā rāvaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
ca kumbhakarṇaḥ sadā pravṛddhanidraḥ mahābalaḥ
19. My brother is Ravana, the lord of demons. And Kumbhakarna, who is always deeply asleep and immensely powerful, is also my brother.
विभीषणस्तु धर्मात्मा न तु राक्षसचेष्टितः ।
प्रख्यातवीर्यौ च रणे भ्रातरौ खरदूषणौ ॥२०॥
20. vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā na tu rākṣasaceṣṭitaḥ ,
prakhyātavīryau ca raṇe bhrātarau kharadūṣaṇau.
20. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu dharmātmā na tu rākṣasaceṣṭitaḥ
prakhyātavīryau ca raṇe bhrātarau kharadūṣaṇau
20. tu vibhīṣaṇaḥ dharmātmā tu rākṣasaceṣṭitaḥ na
ca kharadūṣaṇau bhrātarau raṇe prakhyātavīryau
20. But Vibhishana is righteous (dharmātmā) and does not engage in demon-like activities. And my two brothers, Khara and Dushana, are renowned for their valor in battle.
तानहं समतिक्रान्ता राम त्वापूर्वदर्शनात् ।
समुपेतास्मि भावेन भर्तारं पुरुषोत्तमम् ।
चिराय भव भर्ता मे सीतया किं करिष्यसि ॥२१॥
21. tānahaṃ samatikrāntā rāma tvāpūrvadarśanāt ,
samupetāsmi bhāvena bhartāraṃ puruṣottamam ,
cirāya bhava bhartā me sītayā kiṃ kariṣyasi.
21. tān ahaṃ samatikrāntā rāma tvā
apūrvadarśanāt samupetā asmi bhāvena
bhartāraṃ puruṣottamam cirāya
bhava bhartā me sītayā kiṃ kariṣyasi
21. rāma apūrvadarśanāt ahaṃ tān
samatikrāntā bhāvena tvā puruṣottamam
bhartāraṃ samupetā asmi cirāya me
bhartā bhava sītayā kiṃ kariṣyasi
21. O Rama, disregarding them (my brothers), and upon seeing you for the first time, I have come to you with affection, desiring you as my husband, the best among men (puruṣottama). Be my husband for a long time! What will you do with Sita?
विकृता च विरूपा च न सेयं सदृशी तव ।
अहमेवानुरूपा ते भार्यारूपेण पश्य माम् ॥२२॥
22. vikṛtā ca virūpā ca na seyaṃ sadṛśī tava ,
ahamevānurūpā te bhāryārūpeṇa paśya mām.
22. vikṛtā ca virūpā ca na sā iyam sadṛśī tava
aham eva anurūpā te bhāryārūpeṇa paśya mām
22. sā iyam vikṛtā ca virūpā ca tava sadṛśī na
aham eva te anurūpā mām bhāryārūpeṇa paśya
22. This woman is deformed and ugly; she is not suitable for you. I alone am appropriate for you; behold me as your wife.
इमां विरूपामसतीं करालां निर्णतोदरीम् ।
अनेन सह ते भ्रात्रा भक्षयिष्यामि मानुषीम् ॥२३॥
23. imāṃ virūpāmasatīṃ karālāṃ nirṇatodarīm ,
anena saha te bhrātrā bhakṣayiṣyāmi mānuṣīm.
23. imām virūpām asatīm karālām nirṇatodarīm
anena saha te bhrātrā bhakṣayiṣyāmi mānuṣīm
23. aham te anena bhrātrā saha imām virūpām asatīm
karālām nirṇatodarīm mānuṣīm bhakṣayiṣyāmi
23. I will devour this ugly, wicked, dreadful woman with a protruding belly, this human, along with your brother.
ततः पर्वतशृङ्गाणि वनानि विविधानि च ।
पश्यन् सह मया कान्त दण्डकान् विचरिष्यसि ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ parvataśṛṅgāṇi vanāni vividhāni ca ,
paśyan saha mayā kānta daṇḍakān vicariṣyasi.
24. tataḥ parvataśṛṅgāṇi vanāni vividhāni ca
paśyan saha mayā kānta daṇḍakān vicariṣyasi
24. kānta tataḥ mayā saha paśyan vividhāni
parvataśṛṅgāṇi ca vanāni ca daṇḍakān vicariṣyasi
24. Then, beloved, seeing various mountain peaks and forests, you will roam through the Daṇḍaka region with me.
इत्येवमुक्तः काकुत्स्थः प्रहस्य मदिरेक्षणाम् ।
इदं वचनमारेभे वक्तुं वाक्यविशारदः ॥२५॥
25. ityevamuktaḥ kākutsthaḥ prahasya madirekṣaṇām ,
idaṃ vacanamārebhe vaktuṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
25. iti evam uktaḥ kākutsthaḥ prahasya madirekṣaṇām
idam vacanam ārabhe vaktum vākyaviśāradaḥ
25. vākyaviśāradaḥ kākutsthaḥ iti evam uktaḥ
madirekṣaṇām prahasya idam vacanam vaktum ārabhe
25. Having been addressed in this manner, Rāma (Kākutstha), an expert in speech, smiled at the woman with intoxicating eyes and then began to utter these words.
