एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो रामेणार्तेन वानरः ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं सबाष्पं बाष्पगद्गदः ॥१॥
1. evamuktastu sugrīvo rāmeṇārtena vānaraḥ ,
abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ sabāṣpaṃ bāṣpagadgadaḥ.

1. When spoken to thus by the distressed Rāma, Sugrīva, the monkey, with folded hands, spoke words that were tearful and choked with emotion.
न जाने निलयं तस्य सर्वथा पापरक्षसः ।
सामर्थ्यं विक्रमं वापि दौष्कुलेयस्य वा कुलम् ॥२॥
2. na jāne nilayaṃ tasya sarvathā pāparakṣasaḥ ,
sāmarthyaṃ vikramaṃ vāpi dauṣkuleyasya vā kulam.
2. na jāne nilayam tasya sarvathā pāparakṣasaḥ
sāmartyam vikramam vā api dauṣkuleyasya vā kulam
2. tasya pāparakṣasaḥ nilayam sarvathā na jāne.
sāmartyam vikramam vā api dauṣkuleyasya kulam vā
2. I absolutely do not know the dwelling place of that sinful Rākṣasa. Nor do I know his strength, his prowess, or even the family (lineage) of that evil-born one.
सत्यं तु प्रतिजानामि त्यज शोकमरिंदम ।
करिष्यामि तथा यत्नं यथा प्राप्स्यसि मैथिलीम् ॥३॥
3. satyaṃ tu pratijānāmi tyaja śokamariṃdama ,
kariṣyāmi tathā yatnaṃ yathā prāpsyasi maithilīm.
3. satyam tu pratijānāmi tyaja śokam arimdam
kariṣyāmi tathā yatnam yathā prāpsyasi maithilīm
3. arimdam tu satyam pratijānāmi śokam tyaja.
tathā yatnam kariṣyāmi yathā maithilīm prāpsyasi
3. But I truly pledge, O vanquisher of foes (arimdam)! Abandon your sorrow. I will make such an effort that you will certainly regain Maithilī.
रावणं सगणं हत्वा परितोष्यात्मपौरुषम् ।
तथास्मि कर्ता नचिराद् यथा प्रीतो भविष्यसि ॥४॥
4. rāvaṇaṃ sagaṇaṃ hatvā paritoṣyātmapauruṣam ,
tathāsmi kartā nacirād yathā prīto bhaviṣyasi.
4. rāvaṇam sagaṇam hatvā paritoṣya ātmapauruṣam
tathā asmi kartā na cirāt yathā prītaḥ bhaviṣyasi
4. sagaṇam rāvaṇam hatvā ātmapauruṣam paritoṣya,
na cirāt tathā kartā asmi yathā prītaḥ bhaviṣyasi
4. After slaying Rāvaṇa along with his retinue, and thereby satisfying my own heroic valor (pauruṣa), I will soon act in such a way that you will be pleased.
अलं वैक्लव्यमालम्ब्य धैर्यमात्मगतं स्मर ।
त्वद्विधानां न सदृशमीदृशं बुद्धिलाघवम् ॥५॥
5. alaṃ vaiklavyamālambya dhairyamātmagataṃ smara ,
tvadvidhānāṃ na sadṛśamīdṛśaṃ buddhilāghavam.
5. alam vaiklavyam ālambya dhairyam ātmagatam smara
tvadvidhānām na sadṛśam īdṛśam buddhilāghavam
5. alam vaiklavyam ālambya tvadvidhānām ātmagatam
dhairyam smara na īdṛśam buddhilāghavam sadṛśam
5. Desist from clinging to despondency; remember the courage inherent within you. Such a lack of wisdom is not befitting persons like yourself.
मयापि व्यसनं प्राप्तं भार्या हरणजं महत् ।
न चाहमेवं शोचामि न च धैर्यं परित्यजे ॥६॥
6. mayāpi vyasanaṃ prāptaṃ bhāryā haraṇajaṃ mahat ,
na cāhamevaṃ śocāmi na ca dhairyaṃ parityaje.
6. mayā api vyasanam prāptam bhāryā haraṇajam mahat
na ca aham evam śocāmi na ca dhairyam parityaje
6. mayā api bhāryā haraṇajam mahat vyasanam prāptam
ca aham evam na śocāmi ca dhairyam na parityaje
6. Even I have experienced a great misfortune arising from the abduction of my wife. And yet, I do not grieve in this way, nor do I abandon my fortitude.
नाहं तामनुशोचामि प्राकृतो वानरो ऽपि सन् ।
महात्मा च विनीतश्चा किं पुनर्धृतिमान्भवान् ॥७॥
7. nāhaṃ tāmanuśocāmi prākṛto vānaro'pi san ,
mahātmā ca vinītaścā kiṃ punardhṛtimānbhavān.
7. na aham tām anuśocāmi prākṛtaḥ vānaraḥ api san
mahātmā ca vinītaḥ ca kim punaḥ dhṛtimān bhavān
7. aham tām na anuśocāmi api prākṛtaḥ vānaraḥ san ca mahātmā ca vinītaḥ.
bhavān dhṛtimān kim punaḥ?
7. I do not grieve for her, even though I am just an ordinary monkey, and I am indeed great-souled (mahātmā) and disciplined. How much more, then, should you, being endowed with fortitude, (not grieve)?
बाष्पमापतितं धैर्यान्निग्रहीतुं त्वमर्हसि ।
मर्यादां सत्त्वयुक्तानां धृतिं नोत्स्रष्टुमर्हसि ॥८॥
8. bāṣpamāpatitaṃ dhairyānnigrahītuṃ tvamarhasi ,
maryādāṃ sattvayuktānāṃ dhṛtiṃ notsraṣṭumarhasi.
8. bāṣpam āpatitam dhairyāt nigrahītum tvam arhasi
maryādām sattvayuktānām dhṛtim na utsraṣṭum arhasi
8. tvam dhairyāt āpatitam bāṣpam nigrahītum arhasi.
tvam sattvayuktānām maryādām ca dhṛtim na utsraṣṭum arhasi.
8. You ought to restrain the tears that have fallen, doing so by your fortitude. You should not abandon the propriety and steadfastness of those endowed with virtue.
व्यसने वार्थ कृच्छ्रे वा भये वा जीवितान्तगे ।
विमृशन् वै स्वया बुद्ध्या धृतिमान्नावसीदति ॥९॥
9. vyasane vārtha kṛcchre vā bhaye vā jīvitāntage ,
vimṛśan vai svayā buddhyā dhṛtimānnāvasīdati.
9. vyasane vā artha kṛcchre vā bhaye vā jīvitāntage
vimṛśan vai svayā buddhyā dhṛtimān na avasīdati
9. dhṛtimān vai naraḥ vyasane vā artha kṛcchre vā bhaye
vā jīvitāntage svayā buddhyā vimṛśan na avasīdati
9. Indeed, a person endowed with fortitude (dhṛti), who reflects with their own intellect, does not succumb to despair, whether in misfortune, financial distress, fear, or even when facing the end of life.
बालिशस्तु नरो नित्यं वैक्लव्यं यो ऽनुवर्तते ।
स मज्जत्यवशः शोके भाराक्रान्तेव नौर्जले ॥१०॥
10. bāliśastu naro nityaṃ vaiklavyaṃ yo'nuvartate ,
sa majjatyavaśaḥ śoke bhārākrānteva naurjale.
10. bāliśaḥ tu naraḥ nityaṃ vaiklavyaṃ yaḥ anuvartate
saḥ majjati avaśaḥ śoke bhārākrāntā iva nauḥ jale
10. tu yaḥ bāliśaḥ naraḥ nityaṃ vaiklavyaṃ anuvartate
saḥ avaśaḥ bhārākrāntā nauḥ jale iva śoke majjati
10. But the foolish person who constantly succumbs to despondency (vaiklavya), he, helpless, drowns in sorrow, just like a boat overloaded with cargo sinks in water.
एषो ऽञ्जलिर्मया बद्धः प्रणयात्त्वां प्रसादये ।
पौरुषं श्रय शोकस्य नान्तरं दातुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. eṣo'ñjalirmayā baddhaḥ praṇayāttvāṃ prasādaye ,
pauruṣaṃ śraya śokasya nāntaraṃ dātumarhasi.
11. eṣaḥ añjaliḥ mayā baddhaḥ praṇayāt tvāṃ prasādaye
pauruṣaṃ śraya śokasya na antaraṃ dātum arhasi
11. mayā eṣaḥ añjaliḥ praṇayāt baddhaḥ (asti).
tvāṃ prasādaye.
pauruṣaṃ śraya.
śokasya antaram na dātum arhasi.
11. This gesture of folded hands (añjali) has been made by me out of affection; I implore you. Take refuge in valor and fortitude (pauruṣa); you ought not to give room for sorrow.
ये शोकमनुवर्तन्ते न तेषां विद्यते सुखम् ।
तेजश्च क्षीयते तेषां न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. ye śokamanuvartante na teṣāṃ vidyate sukham ,
tejaśca kṣīyate teṣāṃ na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi.
12. ye śokam anuvartante na teṣāṃ vidyate sukham
tejaḥ ca kṣīyate teṣāṃ na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi
12. ye śokam anuvartante teṣāṃ sukham na vidyate.
ca teṣāṃ tejaḥ kṣīyate.
tvaṃ na śocitum arhasi.
12. Happiness is not found for those who yield to sorrow (śoka). Their vitality (tejas) also diminishes. You ought not to grieve.
हितं वयस्य भावेन ब्रूहि नोपदिशामि ते ।
वयस्यतां पूजयन्मे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥१३॥
13. hitaṃ vayasya bhāvena brūhi nopadiśāmi te ,
vayasyatāṃ pūjayanme na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi.
13. hitam vayasya bhāvena brūhi na upadiśāmi te
vayasyatām pūjayan me na tvam śocitum arhasi
13. tvam me vayasyatām pūjayan na śocitum arhasi,
vayasya bhāvena hitam brūhi,
te na upadiśāmi
13. Speak to me as a friend, offering what is beneficial; I am not instructing you. By honoring our friendship, you should not mourn.
मधुरं सान्त्वितस्तेन सुग्रीवेण स राघवः ।
मुखमश्रुपरिक्लिन्नं वस्त्रान्तेन प्रमार्जयत् ॥१४॥
14. madhuraṃ sāntvitastena sugrīveṇa sa rāghavaḥ ,
mukhamaśrupariklinnaṃ vastrāntena pramārjayat.
14. madhuram sāntvitaḥ tena sugrīveṇa saḥ rāghavaḥ
mukham aśrupariklinnam vastrāntena pramārjayat
14. tena sugrīveṇa madhuram sāntvitaḥ saḥ rāghavaḥ
aśrupariklinnam mukham vastrāntena pramārjayat
14. Sweetly consoled by Sugriva, Rama (rāghava) then wiped his face, which was wet with tears, with the edge of his garment.
प्रकृतिष्ठस्तु काकुत्स्थः सुग्रीववचनात् प्रभुः ।
संपरिष्वज्य सुग्रीवमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. prakṛtiṣṭhastu kākutsthaḥ sugrīvavacanāt prabhuḥ ,
saṃpariṣvajya sugrīvamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
15. prakṛtisthaḥ tu kākutsthaḥ sugrīvavacanāt prabhuḥ
sampariṣvajya sugrīvam idam vacanam abravīt
15. tu sugrīvavacanāt prakṛtisthaḥ prabhuḥ kākutsthaḥ
sugrīvam sampariṣvajya idam vacanam abravīt
15. Indeed, the lord Rama (kākutstha), having become composed by Sugriva's words, embraced Sugriva and spoke these words.
कर्तव्यं यद्वयस्येन स्निग्धेन च हितेन च ।
अनुरूपं च युक्तं च कृतं सुग्रीव तत्त्वया ॥१६॥
16. kartavyaṃ yadvayasyena snigdhena ca hitena ca ,
anurūpaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca kṛtaṃ sugrīva tattvayā.
16. kartavyam yat vayasyena snigdhena ca hitena ca
anurūpam ca yuktam ca kṛtam sugrīva tat tvayā
16. sugrīva,
yat kartavyam,
(ca) vayasyena snigdhena ca hitena ca,
(ca) anurūpam ca yuktam,
tat tvayā kṛtam
16. Oh Sugriva, that which should be done by a friend - by one who is affectionate and well-wishing, and which is also appropriate and right - that has been accomplished by you.
एष च प्रकृतिष्ठो ऽहमनुनीतस्त्वया सखे ।
दुर्लभो हीदृशो बन्धुरस्मिन् काले विशेषतः ॥१७॥
17. eṣa ca prakṛtiṣṭho'hamanunītastvayā sakhe ,
durlabho hīdṛśo bandhurasmin kāle viśeṣataḥ.
17. eṣa ca prakṛtiṣṭhaḥ aham anunītaḥ tvayā sakhe
durlabhaḥ hi īdṛśaḥ bandhuḥ asmin kāle viśeṣataḥ
17. sakhe eṣa aham ca prakṛtiṣṭhaḥ tvayā anunītaḥ hi
asmin kāle viśeṣataḥ īdṛśaḥ bandhuḥ durlabhaḥ
17. O friend, I am now restored to my natural state (prakṛti) and have been convinced by you. Indeed, such a companion is rare, especially in these times.
किं तु यत्नस्त्वया कार्यो मैथिल्याः परिमार्गणे ।
राक्षसस्य च रौद्रस्य रावणस्य दुरात्मनः ॥१८॥
18. kiṃ tu yatnastvayā kāryo maithilyāḥ parimārgaṇe ,
rākṣasasya ca raudrasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ.
18. kim tu yatnaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ maithilyāḥ parimārgaṇe
rākṣasasya ca raudrasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ
18. kim tu tvayā maithilyāḥ parimārgaṇe ca raudrasya
durātmanaḥ rākṣasasya rāvaṇasya yatnaḥ kāryaḥ
18. However, an effort must be made by you for the search of Sita (Maithilī) and also for the terrible, evil-minded demon Ravana.
मया च यदनुष्ठेयं विस्रब्धेन तदुच्यताम् ।
वर्षास्विव च सुक्षेत्रे सर्वं संपद्यते तव ॥१९॥
19. mayā ca yadanuṣṭheyaṃ visrabdhena taducyatām ,
varṣāsviva ca sukṣetre sarvaṃ saṃpadyate tava.
19. mayā ca yat anuṣṭheyam visrabdhena tat ucyatām
varṣāsu iva ca sukṣetre sarvam saṃpadyate tava
19. ca yat mayā anuṣṭheyam tat visrabdhena ucyatām
ca varṣāsu sukṣetre iva sarvam tava saṃpadyate
19. And whatever duty is to be performed by me, let that be told to me confidently. For all your endeavors will succeed, just as everything prospers in a fertile field during the rainy season.
मया च यदिदं वाक्यमभिमानात् समीरितम् ।
तत्त्वया हरिशार्दूल तत्त्वमित्युपधार्यताम् ॥२०॥
20. mayā ca yadidaṃ vākyamabhimānāt samīritam ,
tattvayā hariśārdūla tattvamityupadhāryatām.
20. mayā ca yat idam vākyam abhimānāt samīritam
tat tvayā hariśārdūla tattvam iti upadhāryatām
20. hariśārdūla ca yat idam vākyam mayā abhimānāt
samīritam tat tvayā tattvam iti upadhāryatām
20. And whatever statement I have made with a sense of self-assurance, O lion among men (Hariśārdūla), let that be understood by you as the truth (tattva).
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे न च वक्ष्ये कदा चन ।
एतत्ते प्रतिजानामि सत्येनैव शपामि ते ॥२१॥
21. anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ me na ca vakṣye kadā cana ,
etatte pratijānāmi satyenaiva śapāmi te.
21. anṛtam na uktapūrvam me na ca vakṣye kadā cana
etat te pratijānāmi satyena eva śapāmi te
21. me anṛtam na uktapūrvam ca kadā cana na vakṣye
etat te pratijānāmi te satyena eva śapāmi
21. An untruth has never been spoken by me before, nor will I ever speak one. This I promise to you; indeed, I swear to you by truth.
ततः प्रहृष्टः सुग्रीवो वानरैः सचिवैः सह ।
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रतिज्ञातं विशेषतः ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ sugrīvo vānaraiḥ sacivaiḥ saha ,
rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā pratijñātaṃ viśeṣataḥ.
22. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ sugrīvaḥ vānaraiḥ sacivaiḥ saha
rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā pratijñātam viśeṣataḥ
22. tataḥ rāghavasya vacaḥ viśeṣataḥ pratijñātam
śrutvā prahṛṣṭaḥ vānaraiḥ sacivaiḥ saha sugrīvaḥ
22. Then, having heard Rama's words, especially what was promised, Sugriva, greatly delighted, was with his monkey ministers.
महानुभावस्य वचो निशम्य हरिर्नराणामृषभस्य तस्य ।
कृतं स मेने हरिवीर मुख्यस्तदा स्वकार्यं हृदयेन विद्वान् ॥२३॥
23. mahānubhāvasya vaco niśamya harirnarāṇāmṛṣabhasya tasya ,
kṛtaṃ sa mene harivīra mukhyastadā svakāryaṃ hṛdayena vidvān.
23. mahānubhāvasya vacaḥ niśamya hariḥ narāṇām ṛṣabhasya tasya
kṛtam sa mene harivīramukhyaḥ tadā svakāryam hṛdayena vidvān
23. tadā mahānubhāvasya narāṇām ṛṣabhasya tasya vacaḥ niśamya saḥ
harivīramukhyaḥ hariḥ vidvān hṛdayena svakāryam kṛtam mene
23. Then, having heard the words of that highly esteemed best of men, the chief of monkey heroes, Sugriva, inwardly understanding, considered his own objective achieved.
