जिते महेन्द्रे ऽतिबले रावणस्य सुतेन वै ।
प्रजापतिं पुरस्कृत्य गता लङ्कां सुरास्तदा ॥१॥

1. When the exceedingly powerful Mahendra (Indra) had been conquered by Rāvaṇa's son, the gods then went to Laṅkā, with Prajāpati (Brahmā) at their head.
तं रावणं समासाद्य पुत्रभ्रातृभिरावृतम् ।
अब्रवीद्गगने तिष्ठन् सान्त्वपूर्वं प्रजापतिः ॥२॥
2. taṃ rāvaṇaṃ samāsādya putrabhrātṛbhirāvṛtam ,
abravīdgagane tiṣṭhan sāntvapūrvaṃ prajāpatiḥ.
2. tam rāvaṇam samāsādya putrabhrātṛbhiḥ āvṛtam
abravīt gagane tiṣṭhan sāntvapurvam prajāpatiḥ
2. prajāpatiḥ gagane tiṣṭhan,
putrabhrātṛbhiḥ āvṛtam tam rāvaṇam samāsādya,
sāntvapurvam abravīt.
2. Prajāpati, standing in the sky, approached that Rāvaṇa, who was surrounded by his sons and brothers, and spoke, beginning with words of comfort.
वत्स रावण तुष्टो ऽस्मि तव पुत्रस्य संयुगे ।
अहो ऽस्य विक्रमौदार्यं तव तुल्यो ऽधिको ऽपि वा ॥३॥
3. vatsa rāvaṇa tuṣṭo'smi tava putrasya saṃyuge ,
aho'sya vikramaudāryaṃ tava tulyo'dhiko'pi vā.
3. vatsa rāvaṇa tuṣṭaḥ asmi tava putrasya saṃyuge
aho asya vikramaudāryam tava tulyaḥ adhikaḥ api vā
3. vatsa rāvaṇa,
tava putrasya saṃyuge tuṣṭaḥ asmi.
aho asya vikramaudāryam! tava tulyaḥ adhikaḥ api vā.
3. My dear son, Rāvaṇa, I am pleased with your son in battle. Oh, his valor and generosity! He is equal to you, or even superior.
जितं हि भवता सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं स्वेन तेजसा ।
कृता प्रतिज्ञा सफला प्रीतो ऽस्मि स्वसुतेन वै ॥४॥
4. jitaṃ hi bhavatā sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ svena tejasā ,
kṛtā pratijñā saphalā prīto'smi svasutena vai.
4. jitam hi bhavatā sarvam trailokyam svena tejasā
kṛtā pratijñā saphalā prītaḥ asmi svasutena vai
4. hi bhavatā svena tejasā sarvam trailokyam jitam.
pratijñā kṛtā saphalā.
vai svasutena prītaḥ asmi.
4. Indeed, the entire triple world has been conquered by you with your own might. The vow you made has been fulfilled, and I am truly pleased with your son.
अयं च पुत्रो ऽतिबलस्तव रावणरावणिः ।
इन्द्रजित्त्विति विख्यातो जगत्येष भविष्यति ॥५॥
5. ayaṃ ca putro'tibalastava rāvaṇarāvaṇiḥ ,
indrajittviti vikhyāto jagatyeṣa bhaviṣyati.
5. ayam ca putraḥ atibalaḥ tava rāvaṇarāvaṇiḥ
indrajit tu iti vikhyātaḥ jagati eṣaḥ bhaviṣyati
5. ca rāvaṇa,
tava ayam atibalaḥ rāvaṇarāvaṇiḥ putraḥ.
eṣaḥ indrajit tu iti jagati vikhyātaḥ bhaviṣyati.
5. And this exceedingly powerful son of yours, Rāvaṇa, this son of Rāvaṇa, will indeed be renowned in the world as Indrajit.
बलवाञ् शत्रुनिर्जेता भविष्यत्येष राक्षसः ।
यमाश्रित्य त्वया राजन् स्थापितास्त्रिदशा वशे ॥६॥
6. balavāñ śatrunirjetā bhaviṣyatyeṣa rākṣasaḥ ,
yamāśritya tvayā rājan sthāpitāstridaśā vaśe.
6. balavān śatrunirjetā bhaviṣyati eṣaḥ rākṣasaḥ
yam āśritya tvayā rājan sthāpitāḥ tridaśā vaśe
6. rājan eṣaḥ rākṣasaḥ balavān śatrunirjetā bhaviṣyati
yam āśritya tvayā tridaśā vaśe sthāpitāḥ
6. O King, this demon will be mighty and a conqueror of foes, for it is by relying on whom that you have brought the gods under your control.
तन्मुच्यतां महाबाहो महेन्द्रः पाकशासनः ।
किं चास्य मोक्षणार्थाय प्रयच्छन्ति दिवौकसः ॥७॥
7. tanmucyatāṃ mahābāho mahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ ,
kiṃ cāsya mokṣaṇārthāya prayacchanti divaukasaḥ.
7. tat mucyatām mahābāho mahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ kim
ca asya mokṣaṇārthāya prayacchanti divaukasaḥ
7. mahābāho tat mahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ mucyatām.
ca divaukasaḥ asya mokṣaṇārthāya kim prayacchanti?
7. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, let Mahendra, the chastiser of Pāka, be released. And what do the gods offer for his liberation (mokṣaṇa)?
अथाब्रवीन्महातेजा इन्द्रजित् समितिंजयः ।
अमरत्वमहं देव वृणोमीहास्य मोक्षणे ॥८॥
8. athābravīnmahātejā indrajit samitiṃjayaḥ ,
amaratvamahaṃ deva vṛṇomīhāsya mokṣaṇe.
8. atha abravīt mahātejāḥ indrajit samitiṃjayaḥ
amaratvam aham deva vṛṇomi iha asya mokṣaṇe
8. atha mahātejāḥ samitiṃjayaḥ indrajit abravīt: "deva,
aham asya mokṣaṇe iha amaratvam vṛṇomi.
"
8. Then, the exceedingly refulgent Indrajit, victorious in battle, said, 'O deity, I choose immortality (amaratvam) in exchange for his release (mokṣaṇa).'
अब्रवीत्तु तदा देवो रावणिं कमलोद्भवः ।
नास्ति सर्वामरत्वं हि केषां चित् प्राणिनां भुवि ॥९॥
9. abravīttu tadā devo rāvaṇiṃ kamalodbhavaḥ ,
nāsti sarvāmaratvaṃ hi keṣāṃ cit prāṇināṃ bhuvi.
9. abravīt tu tadā devaḥ rāvaṇim kamalodbhavaḥ na
asti sarvāmaratvam hi keṣām cit prāṇinām bhuvi
9. tu tadā kamalodbhavaḥ devaḥ rāvaṇim abravīt: "hi bhuvi keṣām cit prāṇinām sarvāmaratvam na asti.
"
9. But then the lotus-born god (Brahmā) said to Rāvaṇi (Indrajit), 'Indeed, there is no absolute immortality (amaratvam) for any living being in this world.'
अथाब्रवीत् स तत्रस्थमिन्द्रजित् पद्मसंभवम् ।
श्रूयतां या भवेत् सिद्धिः शतक्रतुविमोक्षणे ॥१०॥
10. athābravīt sa tatrasthamindrajit padmasaṃbhavam ,
śrūyatāṃ yā bhavet siddhiḥ śatakratuvimokṣaṇe.
10. atha abravīt saḥ tatrastham indrajit padmasaṃbhavam
śrūyatām yā bhavet siddhiḥ śatakratuvimokṣaṇe
10. atha indrajit saḥ tatrastham padmasaṃbhavam abravīt
śatakratuvimokṣaṇe yā siddhiḥ bhavet śrūyatām
10. Then Indrajit spoke to Brahmā (padmasaṃbhava), who was present there: 'Listen, please, to what kind of success will be achieved in the release of Indra (śatakratu).'
ममेष्टं नित्यशो देव हव्यैः संपूज्य पावकम् ।
संग्राममवतर्तुं वै शत्रुनिर्जयकाङ्क्षिणः ॥११॥
11. mameṣṭaṃ nityaśo deva havyaiḥ saṃpūjya pāvakam ,
saṃgrāmamavatartuṃ vai śatrunirjayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
11. mama iṣṭam nityaśaḥ deva havyaiḥ saṃpūjya pāvakam
saṃgrāmam avatartum vai śatrunirjayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
11. deva śatrunirjayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ mama nityaśaḥ havyaiḥ
pāvakam saṃpūjya saṃgrāmam avatartum vai iṣṭam
11. O god (deva), it is my constant desire, after thoroughly worshipping the fire (pāvaka) with offerings, to enter battle, being one who desires the conquest of enemies.
तस्मिंश्चेदसमाप्ते तु जप्यहोमे विभावसोः ।
युध्येयं देव संग्रामे तदा मे स्याद्विनाशनम् ॥१२॥
12. tasmiṃścedasamāpte tu japyahome vibhāvasoḥ ,
yudhyeyaṃ deva saṃgrāme tadā me syādvināśanam.
12. tasmin cet asamāpte tu japyahome vibhāvasoḥ
yudhyeyam deva saṃgrāme tadā me syāt vināśanam
12. deva cet vibhāvasoḥ tasmin asamāpte japyahome
tu saṃgrāme yudhyeyam tadā me vināśanam syāt
12. O god (deva), if I were to fight in battle while that muttered Vedic fire ritual (japyahoma) for the fire deity (vibhāvasu) remains unfinished, then my destruction would certainly occur.
सर्वो हि तपसा चैव वृणोत्यमरतां पुमान् ।
विक्रमेण मया त्वेतदमरत्वं प्रवर्तितम् ॥१३॥
13. sarvo hi tapasā caiva vṛṇotyamaratāṃ pumān ,
vikrameṇa mayā tvetadamaratvaṃ pravartitam.
13. sarvaḥ hi tapasā ca eva vṛṇoti amaratām pumān
vikrameṇa mayā tu etat amaratvam pravartitam
13. hi sarvaḥ pumān tapasā ca eva amaratām vṛṇoti
tu etat amaratvam mayā vikrameṇa pravartitam
13. Indeed, every person (pumān) attains immortality (amaratā) through ascetic practice (tapas). But this immortality (amaratva) has been acquired by me through valor.
एवमस्त्विति तं प्राह वाक्यं देवः प्रजापतिः ।
मुक्तश्चेन्द्रजिता शक्रो गताश्च त्रिदिवं सुराः ॥१४॥
14. evamastviti taṃ prāha vākyaṃ devaḥ prajāpatiḥ ,
muktaścendrajitā śakro gatāśca tridivaṃ surāḥ.
14. evam astu iti tam prāha vākyam devaḥ prajāpatiḥ
muktaḥ ca indrajitā śakraḥ gatāḥ ca tridivam surāḥ
14. prajāpatiḥ devaḥ evam astu iti vākyam tam prāha ca
indrajitā śakraḥ muktaḥ ca surāḥ tridivam gatāḥ
14. Lord Prajāpati, the deity, said to him, "So be it." And Indra was released by Indrajit, and the gods returned to heaven.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शक्रो दीनो भ्रष्टाम्बरस्रजः ।
राम चिन्तापरीतात्मा ध्यानतत्परतां गतः ॥१५॥
15. etasminnantare śakro dīno bhraṣṭāmbarasrajaḥ ,
rāma cintāparītātmā dhyānatatparatāṃ gataḥ.
15. etasmin antare śakraḥ dīnaḥ bhraṣṭāmbarasrajaḥ
rāma cintāparītātmā dhyānatatparatām gataḥ
15. etasmin antare dīnaḥ bhraṣṭāmbarasrajaḥ rāma
cintāparītātmā śakraḥ dhyānatatparatām gataḥ
15. In the meantime, Indra, dejected, with disheveled garments and garlands, his mind (ātman) overcome with anxiety for Rāma, entered a state of deep contemplation (dhyāna).
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथाभूतं प्राह देवः प्रजापतिः ।
शक्रक्रतो किमुत्कण्ठां करोषि स्मर दुष्कृतम् ॥१६॥
16. taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā tathābhūtaṃ prāha devaḥ prajāpatiḥ ,
śakrakrato kimutkaṇṭhāṃ karoṣi smara duṣkṛtam.
16. tam tu dṛṣṭvā tathābhūtam prāha devaḥ prajāpatiḥ
śakrakrato kim utkaṇṭhām karoṣi smara duṣkṛtam
16. prajāpatiḥ devaḥ tam tathābhūtam dṛṣṭvā tu prāha
he śakrakrato kim utkaṇṭhām karoṣi duṣkṛtam smara
16. Lord Prajāpati, seeing him in that state, said: "O Indra, what longing or anxiety do you feel? Remember your past misdeed."
अमरेन्द्र मया बह्व्यः प्रजाः सृष्टाः पुरा प्रभो ।
एकवर्णाः समाभाषा एकरूपाश्च सर्वशः ॥१७॥
17. amarendra mayā bahvyaḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ purā prabho ,
ekavarṇāḥ samābhāṣā ekarūpāśca sarvaśaḥ.
17. amarendra mayā bahvyaḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ purā prabho
ekavarṇāḥ samābhāṣāḥ ekarūpāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
17. he amarendra prabho purā mayā bahvyaḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ
tāḥ ca ekavarṇāḥ samābhāṣāḥ ekarūpāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
17. O king of the gods, O Lord, in the past I created many beings. They were all of one class, spoke the same language, and had the same form in every respect.
तासां नास्ति विशेषो हि दर्शने लक्षणे ऽपि वा ।
ततो ऽहमेकाग्रमनास्ताः प्रजाः पर्यचिन्तयम् ॥१८॥
18. tāsāṃ nāsti viśeṣo hi darśane lakṣaṇe'pi vā ,
tato'hamekāgramanāstāḥ prajāḥ paryacintayam.
18. tāsām na asti viśeṣaḥ hi darśane lakṣaṇe api vā
tataḥ aham ekāgramanāḥ tāḥ prajāḥ paryacintayam
18. tāsām darśane lakṣaṇe api vā hi viśeṣaḥ na asti
tataḥ aham ekāgramanāḥ tāḥ prajāḥ paryacintayam
18. Indeed, there was no distinction among them, either in their appearance or their characteristics. Therefore, with a concentrated mind, I reflected upon those beings.
सो ऽहं तासां विशेषार्थं स्त्रियमेकां विनिर्ममे ।
यद् यत् प्रजानां प्रत्यङ्गं विशिष्टं तत्तदुद्धृतम् ॥१९॥
19. so'haṃ tāsāṃ viśeṣārthaṃ striyamekāṃ vinirmame ,
yad yat prajānāṃ pratyaṅgaṃ viśiṣṭaṃ tattaduddhṛtam.
19. saḥ aham tāsām viśeṣārtham striyam ekām vinirmame
yat yat prajānām pratyaṅgam viśiṣṭam tat tat uddhṛtam
19. saḥ aham tāsām viśeṣārtham ekām striyam vinirmame
yat yat prajānām pratyaṅgam viśiṣṭam tat tat uddhṛtam
19. So, for the purpose of creating a distinction among them, I created one woman. Whatever excellent limb each of those beings possessed, that very part was extracted (and incorporated into her).
ततो मया रूपगुणैरहल्या स्त्री विनिर्मिता ।
अहल्येत्येव च मया तस्या नाम प्रवर्तितम् ॥२०॥
20. tato mayā rūpaguṇairahalyā strī vinirmitā ,
ahalyetyeva ca mayā tasyā nāma pravartitam.
20. tataḥ mayā rūpaguṇaiḥ ahalyā strī vinirmitā
ahalyā iti eva ca mayā tasyāḥ nāma pravartitam
20. tataḥ mayā rūpaguṇaiḥ ahalyā strī vinirmitā ca
mayā tasyāḥ nāma ahalyā iti eva pravartitam
20. Then, by me, the woman Ahalya was created with exquisite qualities of form and beauty. And it was by me that her name was made current as 'Ahalya'.
निर्मितायां तु देवेन्द्र तस्यां नार्यां सुरर्षभ ।
भविष्यतीति कस्यैषा मम चिन्ता ततो ऽभवत् ॥२१॥
21. nirmitāyāṃ tu devendra tasyāṃ nāryāṃ surarṣabha ,
bhaviṣyatīti kasyaiṣā mama cintā tato'bhavat.
21. nirmitāyām tu devendra tasyām nāryām surarṣabha
bhaviṣyati iti kasya eṣā mama cintā tataḥ abhavat
21. tu devendra surarṣabha tasyām nāryām nirmitāyām
tataḥ mama cintā eṣā kasya bhaviṣyati iti abhavat
21. But, O king of gods, O best among gods, when that woman was created, then this anxiety arose in me: "Whose will this one be?"
त्वं तु शक्र तदा नारीं जानीषे मनसा प्रभो ।
स्थानाधिकतया पत्नी ममैषेति पुरंदर ॥२२॥
22. tvaṃ tu śakra tadā nārīṃ jānīṣe manasā prabho ,
sthānādhikatayā patnī mamaiṣeti puraṃdara.
22. tvam tu śakra tadā nārīm jānīṣe manasā prabho
sthānādhikatayā patnī mama eṣā iti purandara
22. śakra prabho purandara tvam tu tadā manasā
nārīm jānīṣe mama eṣā patnī sthānādhikatayā iti
22. But you, O Śakra, O Lord, O Purandara, at that time considered that woman in your mind, thinking, 'This is my wife, because of my superior position.'
सा मया न्यासभूता तु गौतमस्य महात्मनः ।
न्यस्ता बहूनि वर्षाणि तेन निर्यातिता च सा ॥२३॥
23. sā mayā nyāsabhūtā tu gautamasya mahātmanaḥ ,
nyastā bahūni varṣāṇi tena niryātitā ca sā.
23. sā mayā nyāsabhūtā tu gautamasya mahātmanaḥ
nyastā bahūni varṣāṇi tena niryātitā ca sā
23. sā tu mayā nyāsabhūtā mahātmanaḥ gautamasya
bahūni varṣāṇi nyastā ca tena niryātitā
23. However, she had been placed by me as a trust with the great-souled Gautama for many years. And by him, she was returned.
ततस्तस्य परिज्ञाय मया स्थैर्यं महामुनेः ।
ज्ञात्वा तपसि सिद्धिं च पत्न्यर्थं स्पर्शिता तदा ॥२४॥
24. tatastasya parijñāya mayā sthairyaṃ mahāmuneḥ ,
jñātvā tapasi siddhiṃ ca patnyarthaṃ sparśitā tadā.
24. tataḥ tasya parijñāya mayā sthairyam mahāmuneḥ
jñātvā tapasi siddhim ca patnīartham sparśitā tadā
24. tataḥ mayā tasya mahāmuneḥ sthairyam parijñāya ca
tapasi siddhim jñātvā tadā patnīartham sparśitā
24. Therefore, having fully comprehended his steadfastness and having recognized his success (siddhi) in ascetic practice (tapas), she was then offered to him as a wife.
स तया सह धर्मात्मा रमते स्म महामुनिः ।
आसन्निराशा देवास्तु गौतमे दत्तया तया ॥२५॥
25. sa tayā saha dharmātmā ramate sma mahāmuniḥ ,
āsannirāśā devāstu gautame dattayā tayā.
25. saḥ tayā saha dharmātmā ramate sma mahāmuniḥ
āsan nirāśā devāḥ tu gautame dattayā tayā
25. saḥ dharmātmā mahāmuniḥ tayā saha ramate sma
tu devāḥ gautame dattayā tayā nirāśā āsan
25. That great sage (mahāmuni), whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, was enjoying himself with her. But the gods became hopeless because she was given to Gautama.
त्वं क्रुद्धस्त्विह कामात्मा गत्वा तस्याश्रमं मुनेः ।
दृष्टवांश्च तदा तां स्त्रीं दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥२६॥
26. tvaṃ kruddhastviha kāmātmā gatvā tasyāśramaṃ muneḥ ,
dṛṣṭavāṃśca tadā tāṃ strīṃ dīptāmagniśikhāmiva.
26. tvam kruddhaḥ tu iha kāmātmā gatvā tasya āśramam
muneḥ dṛṣṭavān ca tadā tām strīm dīptām agniśikhām iva
26. tvam kruddhaḥ kāmātmā tu iha muneḥ tasya āśramam
gatvā tadā ca dīptām agniśikhām iva tām strīm dṛṣṭavān
26. Then you, enraged and driven by desire, went to the hermitage (āśrama) of that sage (muni) and saw that woman, radiant like a flame of fire.
सा त्वया धर्षिता शक्र कामार्तेन समन्युना ।
दृष्टस्त्वं च तदा तेन आश्रमे परमर्षिणा ॥२७॥
27. sā tvayā dharṣitā śakra kāmārtena samanyunā ,
dṛṣṭastvaṃ ca tadā tena āśrame paramarṣiṇā.
27. sā tvayā dharṣitā śakra kāmārtena samanyunā
dṛṣṭaḥ tvam ca tadā tena āśrame paramarṣiṇā
27. śakra sā tvayā kāmārtena samanyunā dharṣitā
ca tadā tvam tena paramarṣiṇā āśrame dṛṣṭaḥ
27. O Śakra, she was violated by you, who were tormented by desire and filled with wrath. And then, at that very moment, you were seen in the hermitage (āśrama) by that supreme sage (paramarṣi).
ततः क्रुद्धेन तेनासि शप्तः परमतेजसा ।
गतो ऽसि येन देवेन्द्र दशाभागविपर्ययम् ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ kruddhena tenāsi śaptaḥ paramatejasā ,
gato'si yena devendra daśābhāgaviparyayam.
28. tataḥ kruddhena tena asi śaptaḥ paramatejasā
gataḥ asi yena devendra daśābhāgaviparyayam
28. devendra tataḥ kruddhena paramatejasā tena
asi śaptaḥ yena daśābhāgaviparyayam gataḥ asi
28. Then, by that enraged sage of supreme power, you were cursed, O King of Gods (Devendra), such that you underwent a complete reversal of your state (daśā).
यस्मान्मे धर्षिता पत्नी त्वया वासव निर्भयम् ।
तस्मात्त्वं समरे राजञ् शत्रुहस्तं गमिष्यसि ॥२९॥
29. yasmānme dharṣitā patnī tvayā vāsava nirbhayam ,
tasmāttvaṃ samare rājañ śatruhastaṃ gamiṣyasi.
29. yasmāt me dharṣitā patnī tvayā vāsava nirbhayam
tasmāt tvam samare rājan śatruhastam gamiṣyasi
29. vāsava rājan yasmāt me patnī tvayā nirbhayam
dharṣitā tasmāt tvam samare śatruhastam gamiṣyasi
29. Because my wife was violated by you fearlessly, O Vāsava, therefore, O King, you will fall into the hands of your enemies in battle.
अयं तु भावो दुर्बुद्धे यस्त्वयेह प्रवर्तितः ।
मानुषेष्वपि सर्वेषु भविष्यति न संशयः ॥३०॥
30. ayaṃ tu bhāvo durbuddhe yastvayeha pravartitaḥ ,
mānuṣeṣvapi sarveṣu bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.
30. ayam tu bhāvaḥ durbuddhe yaḥ tvayā iha pravartitaḥ
mānuṣeṣu api sarveṣu bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
30. durbuddhe ayam tu bhāvaḥ yaḥ tvayā iha pravartitaḥ
(saḥ) sarveṣu mānuṣeṣu api bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
30. But this very disposition, O evil-minded one, which has been initiated by you here, will certainly manifest among all humans as well; there is no doubt about it.
तत्राधर्मः सुबलवान् समुत्थास्यति यो महान् ।
तत्रार्धं तस्य यः कर्ता त्वय्यर्धं निपतिष्यति ॥३१॥
31. tatrādharmaḥ subalavān samutthāsyati yo mahān ,
tatrārdhaṃ tasya yaḥ kartā tvayyardhaṃ nipatiṣyati.
31. tatra adharmaḥ su-balavān sam-utthāsyati yaḥ mahān
tatra ardham tasya yaḥ kartā tvayi ardham nipatiṣyati
31. tatra mahān su-balavān adharmaḥ yaḥ samutthāsyati,
tasya ardham yaḥ kartā (tasmin nipatiṣyati),
ardham tvayi nipatiṣyati
31. There, a great and very powerful unrighteousness (adharma) will arise. Half of that (adharma) will fall upon its doer, and the other half will fall upon you.
न च ते स्थावरं स्थानं भविष्यति पुरंदर ।
एतेनाधर्मयोगेन यस्त्वयेह प्रवर्तितः ॥३२॥
32. na ca te sthāvaraṃ sthānaṃ bhaviṣyati puraṃdara ,
etenādharmayogena yastvayeha pravartitaḥ.
32. na ca te sthāvaram sthānam bhaviṣyati purandara
etena adharma-yogena yaḥ tvayā iha pravartitaḥ
32. purandara te sthāvaram sthānam na ca bhaviṣyati
etena adharma-yogena yaḥ tvayā iha pravartitaḥ
32. And there will be no permanent abode for you, O Purandara, because of this unrighteous act (adharma-yoga) which has been initiated by you here.
यश्च यश्च सुरेन्द्रः स्याद्ध्रुवः स न भविष्यति ।
एष शापो मया मुक्त इत्यसौ त्वां तदाब्रवीत् ॥३३॥
33. yaśca yaśca surendraḥ syāddhruvaḥ sa na bhaviṣyati ,
eṣa śāpo mayā mukta ityasau tvāṃ tadābravīt.
33. yaḥ ca yaḥ ca sura-indraḥ syāt dhruvaḥ sa na bhaviṣyati
eṣaḥ śāpaḥ mayā muktaḥ iti asau tvām tadā abravīt
33. yaḥ ca yaḥ ca sura-indraḥ syāt,
saḥ dhruvaḥ na bhaviṣyati.
iti asau tadā tvām abravīt: "eṣaḥ śāpaḥ mayā muktaḥ"
33. And whoever may become the lord of the gods (Surendra) will not be permanent. 'This curse has been released by me,' so he then spoke to you.
तां तु भार्यां विनिर्भर्त्स्य सो ऽब्रवीत् सुमहातपाः ।
दुर्विनीते विनिध्वंस ममाश्रमसमीपतः ॥३४॥
34. tāṃ tu bhāryāṃ vinirbhartsya so'bravīt sumahātapāḥ ,
durvinīte vinidhvaṃsa mamāśramasamīpataḥ.
34. tām tu bhāryām vinirbhartsya saḥ abravīt sumahātapāḥ
durvinīte vinidhvaṃsa mama āśrama samīpataḥ
34. sumahātapāḥ saḥ tām bhāryām vinirbhartsya abravīt
durvinīte mama āśrama samīpataḥ vinidhvaṃsa
34. The man of great austerity, after rebuking his wife, spoke to her: "O ill-behaved one, vanish from the vicinity of my hermitage!"
रूपयौवनसंपन्ना यस्मात्त्वमनवस्थिता ।
तस्माद् रूपवती लोके न त्वमेका भविष्यसि ॥३५॥
35. rūpayauvanasaṃpannā yasmāttvamanavasthitā ,
tasmād rūpavatī loke na tvamekā bhaviṣyasi.
35. rūpayauvanasampannā yasmāt tvam anavasthitā
tasmāt rūpavatī loke na tvam ekā bhaviṣyasi
35. yasmāt tvam rūpayauvanasampannā anavasthitā
tasmāt tvam loke ekā rūpavatī na bhaviṣyasi
35. Because you are unstable, though endowed with beauty and youth, therefore, you will not be the only beautiful woman in the world.
रूपं च तत् प्रजाः सर्वा गमिष्यन्ति सुदुर्लभम् ।
यत्तवेदं समाश्रित्य विभ्रमे ऽयमुपस्थितः ॥३६॥
36. rūpaṃ ca tat prajāḥ sarvā gamiṣyanti sudurlabham ,
yattavedaṃ samāśritya vibhrame'yamupasthitaḥ.
36. rūpam ca tat prajāḥ sarvāḥ gamiṣyanti sudurlabham
yat tava idam samāśritya vibhrame ayam upasthitaḥ
36. ca prajāḥ sarvāḥ tat sudurlabham rūpam gamiṣyanti
yat idam tava samāśritya ayam vibhrame upasthitaḥ
36. And that very rare beauty, which you possess, all beings will obtain; for it is by relying on this (rūpa) that this delusion has arisen.
तदा प्रभृति भूयिष्ठं प्रजा रूपसमन्विताः ।
शापोत्सर्गाद्धि तस्येदं मुनेः सर्वमुपागतम् ॥३७॥
37. tadā prabhṛti bhūyiṣṭhaṃ prajā rūpasamanvitāḥ ,
śāpotsargāddhi tasyedaṃ muneḥ sarvamupāgatam.
37. tadā prabhṛti bhūyiṣṭham prajāḥ rūpasamanvitāḥ
śāpotsargāt hi tasya idam muneḥ sarvam upāgatam
37. tadā prabhṛti bhūyiṣṭham prajāḥ rūpasamanvitāḥ
hi idam sarvam tasya muneḥ śāpotsargāt upāgatam
37. From that time onwards, the majority of beings became endowed with beauty, for all of this has indeed come to pass from the utterance of that sage's curse.
तत् स्मर त्वं महाबाहो दुष्कृतं यत्त्वया कृतम् ।
येन त्वं ग्रहणं शत्रोर्गतो नान्येन वासव ॥३८॥
38. tat smara tvaṃ mahābāho duṣkṛtaṃ yattvayā kṛtam ,
yena tvaṃ grahaṇaṃ śatrorgato nānyena vāsava.
38. tat smara tvam mahābāho duṣkṛtam yat tvayā kṛtam
yena tvam grahaṇam śatroḥ gataḥ na anyena vāsava
38. mahābāho vāsava tvam yat tvayā kṛtam duṣkṛtam
smara yena tvam śatroḥ grahaṇam gataḥ na anyena
38. O mighty-armed one, O Vasava, remember that misdeed which you committed, by which you were captured by the enemy, and not by any other means.
शीघ्रं यजस्व यज्ञं त्वं वैष्णवं सुसमाहितः ।
पावितस्तेन यज्ञेन यास्यसि त्रिदिवं ततः ॥३९॥
39. śīghraṃ yajasva yajñaṃ tvaṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ susamāhitaḥ ,
pāvitastena yajñena yāsyasi tridivaṃ tataḥ.
39. śīghram yajasva yajñam tvam vaiṣṇavam susamāhitaḥ
pāvitaḥ tena yajñena yāsyasi tridivam tataḥ
39. tvam susamāhitaḥ vaiṣṇavam yajñam śīghram yajasva
tena yajñena pāvitaḥ tataḥ tridivam yāsyasi
39. You, being fully attentive, should quickly perform the Vaiṣṇava (yajña). Purified by that (yajña), you will then ascend to heaven.
पुत्रश्च तव देवेन्द्र न विनष्टो महारणे ।
नीतः संनिहितश्चैव अर्यकेण महोदधौ ॥४०॥
40. putraśca tava devendra na vinaṣṭo mahāraṇe ,
nītaḥ saṃnihitaścaiva aryakeṇa mahodadhau.
40. putraḥ ca tava devendra na vinaṣṭaḥ mahāraṇe
nītaḥ saṃnihitaḥ ca eva aryakeṇa mahodadhau
40. devendra tava putraḥ ca mahāraṇe na vinaṣṭaḥ
aryakeṇa mahodadhau nītaḥ ca eva saṃnihitaḥ
40. And your son, O king of gods, was not killed in the great battle. He was taken and indeed kept safe by Aryaka in the great ocean.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महेन्द्रस्तु यज्ञमिष्ट्वा च वैष्णवम् ।
पुनस्त्रिदिवमाक्रामदन्वशासच्च देवताः ॥४१॥
41. etacchrutvā mahendrastu yajñamiṣṭvā ca vaiṣṇavam ,
punastridivamākrāmadanvaśāsacca devatāḥ.
41. etat śrutvā mahendraḥ tu yajñam iṣṭvā ca vaiṣṇavam
punaḥ tridivam ākrāmat anvaśāsat ca devatāḥ
41. mahendraḥ tu etat śrutvā vaiṣṇavam yajñam ca
iṣṭvā punaḥ tridivam ākrāmat ca devatāḥ anvaśāsat
41. Having heard this, Mahendra (Indra) then performed the Vaiṣṇava (yajña). He then ascended to heaven again and ruled over the deities.
एतदिन्द्रजितो राम बलं यत् कीर्तितं मया ।
निर्जितस्तेन देवेन्द्रः प्राणिनो ऽन्ये च किं पुनः ॥४२॥
42. etadindrajito rāma balaṃ yat kīrtitaṃ mayā ,
nirjitastena devendraḥ prāṇino'nye ca kiṃ punaḥ.
42. etat indrajitaḥ rāma balam yat kīrtitam mayā
nirjitaḥ tena devendraḥ prāṇinaḥ anye ca kim punaḥ
42. rāma mayā yat indrajitaḥ etat balam kīrtitam tena
devendraḥ nirjitaḥ anye prāṇinaḥ ca kim punaḥ
42. O Rāma, this is the power of Indrajit that I have described. By him, even Indra, the lord of the gods, was conquered; what then of other beings?
