Sita, having recognized that distressed cry in the forest as similar to her husband's (Rama's), said to Lakshmana, "Go, and ascertain what has happened to Rama."
न हि मे जीवितं स्थाने हृदयं वावतिष्ठते ।
क्रोशतः परमार्तस्य श्रुतः शब्दो मया भृशम् ॥२॥

2. na hi me jīvitaṃ sthāne hṛdayaṃ vāvatiṣṭhate ,

Indeed, neither my life nor my heart remains at peace. I have clearly heard the loud cry of someone in extreme distress.
आक्रन्दमानं तु वने भ्रातरं त्रातुमर्हसि ।
तं क्षिप्रमभिधाव त्वं भ्रातरं शरणैषिणम् ॥३॥

You ought to save your brother, who is crying out in the forest. You, quickly rush to your brother who is seeking refuge.
रक्षसां वशमापन्नं सिंहानामिव गोवृषम् ।
न जगाम तथोक्तस्तु भ्रातुराज्ञाय शासनम् ॥४॥

4. rakṣasāṃ vaśamāpannaṃ siṃhānāmiva govṛṣam ,
na jagāma tathoktastu bhrāturājñāya śāsanam.

(Lakṣmaṇaḥ) tathā uktah tu bhrātuḥ śāsanam ājñāya
rakṣasām vaśam āpannam siṃhānām iva govr̥ṣam na jagāma

Even though he was thus instructed, he did not go, having understood his brother's command, (to help Rama who was) like a bull among cows fallen into the power of demons (rākṣasāḥ), or like a bull caught by lions.
तमुवाच ततस्तत्र कुपिता जनकात्मजा ।
सौमित्रे मित्ररूपेण भ्रातुस्त्वमसि शत्रुवत् ॥५॥

Then, the angry daughter of Janaka (Sītā) said to him, "O son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa)! You are like an enemy to your brother in the guise of a friend."
यस्त्वमस्यामवस्थायां भ्रातरं नाभिपद्यसे ।
इच्छसि त्वं विनश्यन्तं रामं लक्ष्मण मत्कृते ॥६॥

6. yastvamasyāmavasthāyāṃ bhrātaraṃ nābhipadyase ,

yah tvam asyām avasthāyām bhrātaram na abhipadyase

Lakṣmaṇa,
yah tvam asyām avasthāyām bhrātaram na abhipadyase.
(tvam) matkr̥te rāmam vinaśyantam icchasi.

(tvam) matkr̥te rāmam vinaśyantam icchasi.
6.
O Lakṣmaṇa, you who do not go to your brother in this condition! You desire Rāma to perish for my sake.
व्यसनं ते प्रियं मन्ये स्नेहो भ्रातरि नास्ति ते ।
तेन तिष्ठसि विस्रब्धस्तमपश्यन्महाद्युतिम् ॥७॥

7. vyasanaṃ te priyaṃ manye sneho bhrātari nāsti te ,

te vyasanam priyam.
te bhrātari snehaḥ na asti.

7.
I think misfortune is dear to you; there is no affection for your brother in you. Therefore, you stand confidently, not seeing that greatly radiant one.
किं हि संशयमापन्ने तस्मिन्निह मया भवेत् ।
कर्तव्यमिह तिष्ठन्त्या यत् प्रधानस्त्वमागतः ॥८॥
कर्तव्यमिह तिष्ठन्त्या यत् प्रधानस्त्वमागतः ॥८॥
8. kiṃ hi saṃśayamāpanne tasminniha mayā bhavet ,
kartavyamiha tiṣṭhantyā yat pradhānastvamāgataḥ.

kiṃ hi saṃśayam āpanne tasmin iha mayā bhavet |
kartavyam iha tiṣṭhantyā yat pradhānaḥ tvam āgataḥ

kiṃ hi mayā iha tiṣṭhantyā tasmin saṃśayam āpanne
bhavet yat tvam pradhānaḥ āgataḥ kartavyam

Indeed, what could be done by me, remaining here, if he (Rama) has fallen into danger? Since you, the principal one, have arrived, what is my duty?
इति ब्रुवाणं वैदेहीं बाष्पशोकपरिप्लुताम् ।
अब्रवील् लक्ष्मणस्त्रस्तां सीतां मृगवधूमिव ॥९॥

9. iti bruvāṇaṃ vaidehīṃ bāṣpaśokapariplutām ,

Thus, Lakshmana spoke to Vaidehi (Sita), who was overcome with tears and sorrow, and frightened, just like a doe.
देवि देवमनुष्येषु गन्धर्वेषु पतत्रिषु ।
राक्षसेषु पिशाचेषु किंनरेषु मृगेषु च ॥१०॥

10. devi devamanuṣyeṣu gandharveṣu patatriṣu ,
rākṣaseṣu piśāceṣu kiṃnareṣu mṛgeṣu ca.

O Queen, among gods and humans, among Gandharvas, among birds, among Rākṣasas, among Piśācas, among Kinnaras, and among wild animals...
दानवेषु च घोरेषु न स विद्येत शोभने ।
यो रामं प्रतियुध्येत समरे वासवोपमम् ॥११॥
यो रामं प्रतियुध्येत समरे वासवोपमम् ॥११॥
11. dānaveṣu ca ghoreṣu na sa vidyeta śobhane ,
yo rāmaṃ pratiyudhyeta samare vāsavopamam.

śobhane dānaveṣu ca ghoreṣu na sa vidyeta

And among the terrible Dānavas (demons), O beautiful one, there exists no one who could fight against Rama in battle, for he is comparable to Vāsava (Indra).
अवध्यः समरे रामो नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
न त्वामस्मिन् वने हातुमुत्सहे राघवं विना ॥१२॥
न त्वामस्मिन् वने हातुमुत्सहे राघवं विना ॥१२॥
12. avadhyaḥ samare rāmo naivaṃ tvaṃ vaktumarhasi ,
na tvāmasmin vane hātumutsahe rāghavaṃ vinā.

avadhyaḥ samare rāmaḥ na evam tvam vaktum arhasi
na tvām asmin vane hātum utsahe rāghavam vinā

rāmaḥ samare avadhyaḥ; tvam evam vaktum na arhasi;
rāghavam vinā asmin vane tvām hātum na utsahe
rāghavam vinā asmin vane tvām hātum na utsahe

Rama is invincible in battle; you should not speak like this. I cannot abandon you in this forest without Rama.
अनिवार्यं बलं तस्य बलैर्बलवतामपि ।
त्रिभिर्लोकैः समुद्युक्तैः सेश्वरैः सामरैरपि ॥१३॥

13. anivāryaṃ balaṃ tasya balairbalavatāmapi ,
tribhirlokaiḥ samudyuktaiḥ seśvaraiḥ sāmarairapi.
tribhirlokaiḥ samudyuktaiḥ seśvaraiḥ sāmarairapi.

anivāryam balam tasya balaiḥ balavatām api tribhiḥ
lokaiḥ samudyuktaiḥ sa-īśvaraiḥ sa-amaraiḥ api
lokaiḥ samudyuktaiḥ sa-īśvaraiḥ sa-amaraiḥ api
13.
tasya balam anivāryam; balavatām balaiḥ api; tribhiḥ
samudyuktaiḥ lokaiḥ sa-īśvaraiḥ sa-amaraiḥ api
samudyuktaiḥ lokaiḥ sa-īśvaraiḥ sa-amaraiḥ api
13.
His strength is irresistible, even by the mighty forces of the powerful, and by the three worlds united, along with their lords and the immortals.
हृदयं निर्वृतं ते ऽस्तु संतापस्त्यज्यतामयम् ।
आगमिष्यति ते भर्ता शीघ्रं हत्वा मृगोत्तमम् ॥१४॥

14. hṛdayaṃ nirvṛtaṃ te'stu saṃtāpastyajyatāmayam ,
āgamiṣyati te bhartā śīghraṃ hatvā mṛgottamam.

hṛdayam nirvṛtam te astu saṃtāpaḥ tyajyatām ayam
āgamiṣyati te bhartā śīghram hatvā mṛga-uttamam

te hṛdayam nirvṛtam astu; ayam saṃtāpaḥ tyajyatām;
te bhartā mṛga-uttamam hatvā śīghram āgamiṣyati
te bhartā mṛga-uttamam hatvā śīghram āgamiṣyati
14.
Let your heart be at peace; abandon this sorrow. Your husband will return soon, after killing that excellent deer.
न स तस्य स्वरो व्यक्तं न कश्चिदपि दैवतः ।
गन्धर्वनगरप्रख्या माया सा तस्य रक्षसः ॥१५॥

15. na sa tasya svaro vyaktaṃ na kaścidapi daivataḥ ,
gandharvanagaraprakhyā māyā sā tasya rakṣasaḥ.

na saḥ tasya svaraḥ vyaktam na kaścit api daivataḥ
gandharva-nagara-prakhyā māyā sā tasya rakṣasaḥ

saḥ tasya svaraḥ vyaktam na (āsa); kaścit daivataḥ api na
(āsa); sā tasya rakṣasaḥ gandharva-nagara-prakhyā māyā (āsa)
(āsa); sā tasya rakṣasaḥ gandharva-nagara-prakhyā māyā (āsa)
15.
That was not clearly his (Rama's) voice, nor was it that of any divine being. Rather, that was the illusion (māyā) of that demon (rakṣas), like a phantom city of the Gandharvas.
न्यासभूतासि वैदेहि न्यस्ता मयि महात्मना ।
रामेण त्वं वरारोहे न त्वां त्यक्तुमिहोत्सहे ॥१६॥

16. nyāsabhūtāsi vaidehi nyastā mayi mahātmanā ,
rāmeṇa tvaṃ varārohe na tvāṃ tyaktumihotsahe.

nyāsabhūtā asi vaidehi nyastā mayi mahātmanā

vaidehi varārohe tvam mahātmanā rāmeṇa mayi nyastā nyāsabhūtā asi.

16.
O Vaidehi, O lady with beautiful hips, you have been placed in my care as a sacred trust by the great-souled Rama. I cannot bring myself to abandon you here.
कृतवैराश्च कल्याणि वयमेतैर्निशाचरैः ।
खरस्य निधने देवि जनस्थानवधं प्रति ॥१७॥

17. kṛtavairāśca kalyāṇi vayametairniśācaraiḥ ,
kharasya nidhane devi janasthānavadhaṃ prati.

kṛtavairāḥ ca kalyāṇi vayam etaiḥ niśācaraiḥ
kharasya nidhane devi janasthānavadham prati

kalyāṇi devi,
kharasya nidhane janasthānavadham prati etaiḥ niśācaraiḥ vayam kṛtavairāḥ ca.
kharasya nidhane janasthānavadham prati etaiḥ niśācaraiḥ vayam kṛtavairāḥ ca.
17.
And, O auspicious one, O goddess, we have incurred the enmity of these night-roaming demons because of the slaying of Khara and the massacre in Janasthana.
राक्षसा विधिना वाचो विसृजन्ति महावने ।
हिंसाविहारा वैदेहि न चिन्तयितुमर्हसि ॥१८॥

18. rākṣasā vidhinā vāco visṛjanti mahāvane ,
hiṃsāvihārā vaidehi na cintayitumarhasi.

rākṣasāḥ vidhinā vācaḥ visṛjanti mahāvane
hiṃsāvihārāḥ vaidehi na cintayitum arhasi

hiṃsāvihārāḥ rākṣasāḥ vidhinā vācaḥ mahāvane visṛjanti.

18.
O Vaidehi, the demons, whose very sport is violence, utter their cries in this great forest. You should not worry.
लक्ष्मणेनैवमुक्ता तु क्रुद्धा संरक्तलोचना ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं लक्ष्मणं सत्यवादिनम् ॥१९॥

19. lakṣmaṇenaivamuktā tu kruddhā saṃraktalocanā ,
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ satyavādinam.

lakṣmaṇena evam uktā tu kruddhā saṃraktalocanā
abravīt paruṣam vākyam lakṣmaṇam satyavādinam

kruddhā saṃraktalocanā (sā) satyavādinam lakṣmaṇam paruṣam vākyam abravīt.

19.
But Sita, thus addressed by Lakshmana, became angry, her eyes reddened, and she spoke harsh words to Lakshmana, the truth-teller.
अनार्य करुणारम्भ नृशंस कुलपांसन ।
अहं तव प्रियं मन्ये तेनैतानि प्रभाषसे ॥२०॥
अहं तव प्रियं मन्ये तेनैतानि प्रभाषसे ॥२०॥
20. anārya karuṇārambha nṛśaṃsa kulapāṃsana ,
ahaṃ tava priyaṃ manye tenaitāni prabhāṣase.

anārya karuṇārambha nṛśaṃsa kulapāṃsana aham
tava priyam manye tena etāni prabhāṣase

anārya karuṇārambha nṛśaṃsa kulapāṃsana! aham tava priyam manye,
tena etāni prabhāṣase.

20.
O ignoble one, feigning compassion, cruel, and a disgrace to your family! I believe that these words you speak are pleasing to you, which is why you utter them.
नैतच्चित्रं सपत्नेषु पापं लक्ष्मण यद्भवेत् ।
त्वद्विधेषु नृशंसेषु नित्यं प्रच्छन्नचारिषु ॥२१॥
त्वद्विधेषु नृशंसेषु नित्यं प्रच्छन्नचारिषु ॥२१॥
21. naitaccitraṃ sapatneṣu pāpaṃ lakṣmaṇa yadbhavet ,
tvadvidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityaṃ pracchannacāriṣu.
tvadvidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityaṃ pracchannacāriṣu.

na etat citram sapatneṣu pāpam lakṣmaṇa yat bhavet
tvadvidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityam pracchannacāriṣu
tvadvidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityam pracchannacāriṣu
21.
lakṣmaṇa! etat citram na (asti),
yat pāpam sapatneṣu bhavet; (api ca) tvadvidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityam pracchannacāriṣu (api etat na citram).
yat pāpam sapatneṣu bhavet; (api ca) tvadvidheṣu nṛśaṃseṣu nityam pracchannacāriṣu (api etat na citram).
21.
O Lakṣmaṇa, it is not surprising that such wickedness should occur among rivals, especially among cruel individuals like you, who always move about secretly.
सुदुष्टस्त्वं वने राममेकमेको ऽनुगच्छसि ।
मम हेतोः प्रतिच्छन्नः प्रयुक्तो भरतेन वा ॥२२॥
मम हेतोः प्रतिच्छन्नः प्रयुक्तो भरतेन वा ॥२२॥

You, being utterly wicked, follow Rāma, who is alone in the forest, all by yourself. You are disguised, sent perhaps by Bharata, for my sake.

Having sought refuge in my husband Rāma, who is dark like a blue lotus and whose eyes resemble lotuses, how could I possibly desire any other ordinary person?

O son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa), I shall certainly give up my life in your presence; there is no doubt about this. Indeed, I cannot live on this earth for even a moment without Rama.

After being thus addressed by Sītā with harsh and terrifying words, Lakṣmaṇa, his senses controlled and with folded hands, spoke to Sītā.

O daughter of Mithila (Sītā), I do not dare to give a reply, for you are my deity. However, such inappropriate speech is not surprising among women.
स्वभावस्त्वेष नारीणामेषु लोकेषु दृश्यते ।
विमुक्तधर्माश्चपलास्तीक्ष्णा भेदकराः स्त्रियः ॥२७॥

Indeed, this intrinsic nature (svabhāva) of women is observed in these worlds: women are unrestrained by natural law (dharma), fickle, sharp-tongued, and cause division.
उपशृण्वन्तु मे सर्वे साक्षिभूता वनेचराः ।
न्यायवादी यथा वाक्यमुक्तो ऽहं परुषं त्वया ॥२८॥

Let all you forest-dwellers, who are now my witnesses, listen to me! You have spoken harsh words to me, who am a speaker of justice.

स्त्रीत्वाद्दुष्टस्वभावेन गुरुवाक्ये व्यवस्थितम् ॥२९॥

Damn you! Perish this very day, for you thus suspect me due to your womanhood and wicked nature, me who am steadfast in my master's command (guru vākya).

I will go where Kākuṣṭha (Rāma) is. O beautiful-faced one, may welfare be to you. O broad-eyed one, may all the forest deities protect you.

Indeed, terrible omens appear to me. May I, having returned, see you again with Rāma.

Thus addressed by Lakshmana, Janaka's daughter (Sita), weeping and overwhelmed with tears, then replied with a severe statement.
गोदावरीं प्रवेक्ष्यामि विना रामेण लक्ष्मण ।
आबन्धिष्ये ऽथ वा त्यक्ष्ये विषमे देहमात्मनः ॥३३॥

“O Lakshmana, without Rama, I shall enter the Godavari River, or else I shall hang myself, or abandon my own body (ātman) on a cliff.”

न त्वहं राघवादन्यं पदापि पुरुषं स्पृशे ॥३४॥

“Alternatively, I shall drink potent poison or enter a fire. But I will not touch any man, other than Raghava (Rama), not even with my foot.”

Thus, having rebuked Lakshmana, Sita, overwhelmed with sorrow and weeping, then struck her abdomen with both hands out of distress.

आश्वासयामास न चैव भर्तुस्तं भ्रातरं किं चिदुवाच सीता ॥३६॥

Having seen Sita, who was distressed in appearance, dejected, weeping, and wide-eyed, Lakshmana, the son of Sumitra, comforted her. However, Sita said nothing to that brother of her husband.
ततस्तु सीतामभिवाद्य लक्ष्मणः कृताञ्जलिः किं चिदभिप्रणम्य ।
अवेक्षमाणो बहुशश्च मैथिलीं जगाम रामस्य समीपमात्मवान् ॥३७॥

Then, the resolute Lakshmana, having saluted Sita and bowed down a little with joined hands, and repeatedly looking at Maithili (Sita), went to the vicinity of Rama.
