स्वबलं व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ।
भ्रातॄंश्च निहतान्दृष्ट्वा शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमान् ॥१॥

महोदरमहापार्श्वौ भ्रातरौ राक्षसर्षभौ ॥२॥
2. pitṛvyau cāpi saṃdṛśya samare saṃniṣūditau ,
mahodaramahāpārśvau bhrātarau rākṣasarṣabhau.

2. And having also clearly seen his two paternal uncles - Mahodara and Mahaparshva, who were brothers and chiefs among rakshasas - slain in battle.
चुकोप च महातेजा ब्रह्मदत्तवरो युधि ।
अतिकायो ऽद्रिसंकाशो देवदानवदर्पहा ॥३॥
3. cukopa ca mahātejā brahmadattavaro yudhi ,
atikāyo'drisaṃkāśo devadānavadarpahā.

3. And the exceedingly powerful Atikāya, who had received boons from Brahmā, resembling a mountain, and who had crushed the pride of both gods and demons, became enraged in battle.
स भास्करसहस्रस्य संघातमिव भास्वरम् ।
रथमास्थाय शक्रारिरभिदुद्राव वानरान् ॥४॥
4. sa bhāskarasahasrasya saṃghātamiva bhāsvaram ,
rathamāsthāya śakrārirabhidudrāva vānarān.

ratham āsthāya śakrāriḥ abhidudrāva vānarān
4. He, the enemy of Indra (Śakra), mounted a chariot that shone like the combined radiance of a thousand suns, and then rushed towards the monkeys.
स विस्फार्य महच्चापं किरीटी मृष्टकुण्डलः ।
नाम विश्रावयामास ननाद च महास्वनम् ॥५॥
5. sa visphārya mahaccāpaṃ kirīṭī mṛṣṭakuṇḍalaḥ ,
nāma viśrāvayāmāsa nanāda ca mahāsvanam.

5. He, adorned with a crown and polished earrings, drew his mighty bow, proclaimed his name, and roared loudly.
तेन सिंहप्रणादेन नामविश्रावणेन च ।
ज्याशब्देन च भीमेन त्रासयामास वानरान् ॥६॥
6. tena siṃhapraṇādena nāmaviśrāvaṇena ca ,
jyāśabdena ca bhīmena trāsayāmāsa vānarān.

jyāśabdena ca bhīmena trāsayāmāsa vānarān
6. By that lion-like roar, by the proclamation of his name, and by the dreadful sound of his bowstring, he terrified the monkeys.
ते तस्य रूपमालोक्य यथा विष्णोस्त्रिविक्रमे ।
भयार्ता वानराः सर्वे विद्रवन्ति दिशो दश ॥७॥
7. te tasya rūpamālokya yathā viṣṇostrivikrame ,
bhayārtā vānarāḥ sarve vidravanti diśo daśa.

bhayārtāḥ vānarāḥ sarve vidravanti diśaḥ daśa

7. Upon seeing his form, which was like Viṣṇu's Trivikrama manifestation, all the monkeys, afflicted by fear, fled in all ten directions.
ते ऽतिकायं समासाद्य वानरा मूढचेतसः ।
शरण्यं शरणं जग्मुर्लक्ष्मणाग्रजमाहवे ॥८॥
8. te'tikāyaṃ samāsādya vānarā mūḍhacetasaḥ ,
śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ jagmurlakṣmaṇāgrajamāhave.
8. te atikāyam samāsādya vānarāḥ mūḍhacetasaḥ
śaraṇyam śaraṇam jagmuḥ lakṣmaṇāgrajam āhave
8. te mūḍhacetasaḥ vānarāḥ atikāyam samāsādya

8. Having approached Atikāya, those bewildered monkeys sought refuge in battle with Lakṣmaṇa's elder brother (Rāma), their protector.
ततो ऽतिकायं काकुत्स्थो रथस्थं पर्वतोपमम् ।
ददर्श धन्विनं दूराद्गर्जन्तं कालमेघवत् ॥९॥
9. tato'tikāyaṃ kākutstho rathasthaṃ parvatopamam ,
dadarśa dhanvinaṃ dūrādgarjantaṃ kālameghavat.
9. tataḥ atikāyam kākutsthaḥ rathastham parvatopamam
dadarśa dhanvinam dūrāt garjantam kālameghavat

9. Then Rāma (Kākutstha), from afar, saw Atikāya on his chariot, resembling a mountain, an archer, and roaring like a dark cloud.
स तं दृष्ट्वा महात्मानं राघवस्तु सुविस्मितः ।
वानरान् सान्त्वयित्वा तु विभीषणमुवाच ह ॥१०॥
10. sa taṃ dṛṣṭvā mahātmānaṃ rāghavastu suvismitaḥ ,
vānarān sāntvayitvā tu vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha.
10. saḥ tam dṛṣṭvā mahātmānam rāghavaḥ tu suvasmitaḥ
vānarān sāntvayitvā tu vibhīṣaṇam uvāca ha
10. saḥ rāghavaḥ tu tam mahātmānam dṛṣṭvā suvasmitaḥ

10. But Rāghava, having seen that mighty being (mahātman), was greatly astonished. Then, having consoled the monkeys, he spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa.
को ऽसौ पर्वतसंकाशो धनुष्मान् हरिलोचनः ।
युक्ते हयसहस्रेण विशाले स्यन्दने स्थितः ॥११॥
11. ko'sau parvatasaṃkāśo dhanuṣmān harilocanaḥ ,
yukte hayasahasreṇa viśāle syandane sthitaḥ.

11. Who is that one, resembling a mountain, armed with a bow, with lion-like eyes, standing in a vast chariot yoked with a thousand horses?
य एष निशितैः शूलैः सुतीक्ष्णैः प्रासतोमरैः ।
अर्चिष्मद्भिर्वृतो भाति भूतैरिव महेश्वरः ॥१२॥
12. ya eṣa niśitaiḥ śūlaiḥ sutīkṣṇaiḥ prāsatomaraiḥ ,
arciṣmadbhirvṛto bhāti bhūtairiva maheśvaraḥ.
12. yaḥ eṣaḥ niśitaiḥ śūlaiḥ sutīkṣṇaiḥ prāsatumaraiḥ

12. Who is this one, surrounded by sharp spears and very keen javelins, gleaming with effulgence, like the great lord (Maheśvara) with his attendants?
कालजिह्वाप्रकाशाभिर्य एषो ऽभिविराजते ।
आवृतो रथशक्तीभिर्विद्युद्भिरिव तोयदः ॥१३॥
13. kālajihvāprakāśābhirya eṣo'bhivirājate ,
āvṛto rathaśaktībhirvidyudbhiriva toyadaḥ.
13. kālajihvāprakāśābhiḥ yaḥ eṣaḥ abhivirājate
āvṛtaḥ rathaśaktibhiḥ vidyudbhiḥ iva toyadaḥ

13. Who is this one who shines with chariot-powers (śakti) resembling the fiery tongues of Kāla, encompassed by them like a cloud (toyada) by flashes of lightning?
धनूंसि चास्य सज्यानि हेमपृष्ठानि सर्वशः ।
शोभयन्ति रथश्रेष्ठं शक्रपातमिवाम्बरम् ॥१४॥
14. dhanūṃsi cāsya sajyāni hemapṛṣṭhāni sarvaśaḥ ,
śobhayanti rathaśreṣṭhaṃ śakrapātamivāmbaram.
14. dhanūṃsi ca asya sajyāni hemapṛṣṭhāni sarvaśaḥ
śobhayanti rathaśreṣṭham śakrapātam iva ambaram

14. And all his bows, strung and gold-backed, adorn the best of chariots, like the sky (ambaram) at the fall of Indra's thunderbolt.
क एष रक्षः शार्दूलो रणभूमिं विराजयन् ।
अभ्येति रथिनां श्रेष्ठो रथेनादित्यतेजसा ॥१५॥
15. ka eṣa rakṣaḥ śārdūlo raṇabhūmiṃ virājayan ,
abhyeti rathināṃ śreṣṭho rathenādityatejasā.
15. kaḥ eṣaḥ rakṣaḥ śārdūlaḥ raṇabhūmim virājayan
abhyeti rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ rathena ādityatejasā

15. Who is this rakṣas, a tiger among them, who illuminates the battlefield? The best among charioteers, he approaches with a chariot as brilliant as the sun.
ध्वजशृङ्गप्रतिष्ठेन राहुणाभिविराजते ।
सूर्यरश्मिप्रभैर्बाणैर्दिशो दश विराजयन् ॥१६॥
16. dhvajaśṛṅgapratiṣṭhena rāhuṇābhivirājate ,
sūryaraśmiprabhairbāṇairdiśo daśa virājayan.

sūryaraśmiprabhaiḥ bāṇaiḥ diśaḥ daśa virājayan

16. With Rāhu established on the peak of his banner, he shines radiantly, illuminating the ten directions with arrows brilliant as sunbeams.
त्रिणतं मेघनिर्ह्रादं हेमपृष्ठमलंकृतम् ।
शतक्रतुधनुःप्रख्यं धनुश्चास्य विराजते ॥१७॥
17. triṇataṃ meghanirhrādaṃ hemapṛṣṭhamalaṃkṛtam ,
śatakratudhanuḥprakhyaṃ dhanuścāsya virājate.

śatakratudhanuḥprakhyam dhanuḥ ca asya virājate

17. His bow, thrice-bent, resounding like a thundercloud, adorned with a golden back, and resembling Indra's bow, shines forth.
सध्वजः सपताकश्च सानुकर्षो महारथः ।
चतुःसादिसमायुक्तो मेघस्तनितनिस्वनः ॥१८॥
18. sadhvajaḥ sapatākaśca sānukarṣo mahārathaḥ ,
catuḥsādisamāyukto meghastanitanisvanaḥ.

18. The great chariot, complete with its banner and flag, with its appendage, drawn by four horses, and roaring like a thundering cloud.
विंशतिर्दश चाष्टौ च तूणीररथमास्थिताः ।
कार्मुकाणि च भीमानि ज्याश्च काञ्चनपिङ्गलाः ॥१९॥
19. viṃśatirdaśa cāṣṭau ca tūṇīrarathamāsthitāḥ ,
kārmukāṇi ca bhīmāni jyāśca kāñcanapiṅgalāḥ.
19. viṃśatiḥ daśa ca aṣṭau ca tūṇīraratham āsthitāḥ
kārmukāṇi ca bhīmāni jyāḥ ca kāñcanapiṅgalāḥ

19. Twenty, ten, and eight quivers were situated on the chariot-quiver, along with formidable bows and golden-tawny bowstrings.
द्वौ च खड्गौ रथगतौ पार्श्वस्थौ पार्श्वशोभिनौ ।
चतुर्हस्तत्सरुचितौ व्यक्तहस्तदशायतौ ॥२०॥
20. dvau ca khaḍgau rathagatau pārśvasthau pārśvaśobhinau ,
caturhastatsarucitau vyaktahastadaśāyatau.

20. Two swords were also on the chariot, positioned on its sides and adorning them. Their hilts were four hands (hasta) long, and the swords themselves were distinctly ten hands (hasta) in length.
रक्तकण्ठगुणो धीरो महापर्वतसंनिभः ।
कालः कालमहावक्त्रो मेघस्थ इव भास्करः ॥२१॥
21. raktakaṇṭhaguṇo dhīro mahāparvatasaṃnibhaḥ ,
kālaḥ kālamahāvaktro meghastha iva bhāskaraḥ.

21. He had a red throat-cord, was resolute, and resembled a great mountain. He was like Death (kāla) with a vast, death-like mouth, and like the sun (bhāskara) situated within a cloud.
काञ्चनाङ्गदनद्धाभ्यां भुजाभ्यामेष शोभते ।
शृङ्गाभ्यामिव तुङ्गाभ्यां हिमवान्पर्वतोत्तमः ॥२२॥
22. kāñcanāṅgadanaddhābhyāṃ bhujābhyāmeṣa śobhate ,
śṛṅgābhyāmiva tuṅgābhyāṃ himavānparvatottamaḥ.
22. kāñcanāṅgadanaddhābhyām bhujābhyām eṣaḥ śobhate
śṛṅgābhyām iva tuṅgābhyām himavān parvatottamaḥ
22. eṣaḥ kāñcanāṅgadanaddhābhyām bhujābhyām śobhate,
iva tuṅgābhyām śṛṅgābhyām himavān parvatottamaḥ
22. This one shines with his two arms bound with golden armlets, just as the Himālaya, the foremost of mountains, shines with its two lofty peaks.
कुण्डलाभ्यां तु यस्यैतद्भाति वक्त्रं शुभेक्षणम् ।
पुनर्वस्वन्तरगतं पूर्णबिम्बमिवैन्दवम् ॥२३॥
23. kuṇḍalābhyāṃ tu yasyaitadbhāti vaktraṃ śubhekṣaṇam ,
punarvasvantaragataṃ pūrṇabimbamivaindavam.
23. kuṇḍalābhyām tu yasya etat bhāti vaktram śubhekṣaṇam
punarvasvantaragatam pūrṇabimbam iva aindavam

23. Whose face, with beautiful eyes, shines with these earrings, resembling the full orb of the moon when it is situated within the Punarvasu constellation.
आचक्ष्व मे महाबाहो त्वमेनं राक्षसोत्तमम् ।
यं दृष्ट्वा वानराः सर्वे भयार्ता विद्रुता दिशः ॥२४॥
24. ācakṣva me mahābāho tvamenaṃ rākṣasottamam ,
yaṃ dṛṣṭvā vānarāḥ sarve bhayārtā vidrutā diśaḥ.
24. ācakṣva me mahābāho tvam enam rākṣasottamam yam
dṛṣṭvā vānarāḥ sarve bhayārtāḥ vidrutāḥ diśaḥ
24. mahābāho tvam me enam rākṣasottamam ācakṣva,

24. O mighty-armed one, tell me about this excellent (rākṣasa), whom all the monkeys, terrified, fled in all directions upon seeing.
स पृष्ठो राजपुत्रेण रामेणामिततेजसा ।
आचचक्षे महातेजा राघवाय विभीषणः ॥२५॥
25. sa pṛṣṭho rājaputreṇa rāmeṇāmitatejasā ,
ācacakṣe mahātejā rāghavāya vibhīṣaṇaḥ.
25. saḥ pṛṣṭaḥ rājaputreṇa rāmeṇa amitatejasā
ācacakṣe mahātejāḥ rāghavāya vibhīṣaṇaḥ
25. amitatejasā rāmeṇa rājaputreṇa saḥ pṛṣṭaḥ,
mahātejāḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ rāghavāya ācacakṣe
25. Being questioned by Prince Rama, who possessed immeasurable valor, the mighty-valorous (Vibhīṣaṇa) then recounted to (Rāma) (Rāghava).
दशग्रीवो महातेजा राजा वैश्रवणानुजः ।
भीमकर्मा महोत्साहो रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ॥२६॥
26. daśagrīvo mahātejā rājā vaiśravaṇānujaḥ ,
bhīmakarmā mahotsāho rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ.

bhīmakarmā mahotsāhaḥ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ

26. This is Daśagrīva, the mighty-valorous king, the younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera). He is Rāvaṇa, the lord of (rākṣasas), known for his formidable deeds and immense energy.
तस्यासीद्वीर्यवान्पुत्रो रावणप्रतिमो रणे ।
वृद्धसेवी श्रुतधरः सर्वास्त्रविदुषां वरः ॥२७॥
27. tasyāsīdvīryavānputro rāvaṇapratimo raṇe ,
vṛddhasevī śrutadharaḥ sarvāstraviduṣāṃ varaḥ.
27. tasya āsīt vīryavān putraḥ rāvaṇa-pratimaḥ raṇe
| vṛddha-sevī śrutadharaḥ sarvāstra-viduṣām varaḥ
27. tasya vīryavān rāvaṇa-pratimaḥ raṇe putraḥ āsīt
vṛddha-sevī śrutadharaḥ sarvāstra-viduṣām varaḥ
27. He had a powerful son, who was equal to Rāvaṇa in battle. He was a server of elders, a preserver of sacred knowledge, and the foremost among those skilled in all weapons.
अश्वपृष्ठे रथे नागे खड्गे धनुषि कर्षणे ।
भेदे सान्त्वे च दाने च नये मन्त्रे च संमतः ॥२८॥
28. aśvapṛṣṭhe rathe nāge khaḍge dhanuṣi karṣaṇe ,
bhede sāntve ca dāne ca naye mantre ca saṃmataḥ.
28. aśvapṛṣṭhe rathe nāge khaḍge dhanuṣi karṣaṇe |
bhede sāntve ca dāne ca naye mantre ca saṃmataḥ

28. He was respected in horsemanship, chariot driving, elephant riding, swordsmanship, archery, and drawing (the bow); as well as in division, conciliation, giving, statesmanship, and counsel.
यस्य बाहुं समाश्रित्य लङ्का भवति निर्भया ।
तनयं धान्यमालिन्या अतिकायमिमं विदुः ॥२९॥
29. yasya bāhuṃ samāśritya laṅkā bhavati nirbhayā ,
tanayaṃ dhānyamālinyā atikāyamimaṃ viduḥ.
29. yasya bāhum samāśritya laṅkā bhavati nirbhayā
| tanayam dhānyamālinyā atikāyam imam viduḥ
29. yasya bāhum samāśritya laṅkā nirbhayā bhavati

29. Taking refuge in whose arm, Laṅkā becomes fearless. They know this son, born of Dhānyamālinī, as Atikāya.
एतेनाराधितो ब्रह्मा तपसा भावितात्मना ।
अस्त्राणि चाप्यवाप्तानि रिपवश्च पराजिताः ॥३०॥
30. etenārādhito brahmā tapasā bhāvitātmanā ,
astrāṇi cāpyavāptāni ripavaśca parājitāḥ.
30. etena ārādhitaḥ brahmā tapasā bhāvita-ātmanā
| astrāṇi ca api avāptāni ripavaḥ ca parājitāḥ

30. By him, Lord Brahmā was propitiated through austerity (tapas) and a disciplined self (ātman). Weapons were also obtained, and enemies were defeated.
सुरासुरैरवध्यत्वं दत्तमस्मै स्वयम्भुवा ।
एतच्च कवचं दिव्यं रथश्चैषो ऽर्कभास्करः ॥३१॥
31. surāsurairavadhyatvaṃ dattamasmai svayambhuvā ,
etacca kavacaṃ divyaṃ rathaścaiṣo'rkabhāskaraḥ.
31. surāsuraiḥ avadhyatvam dattam asmai svayambhuvā |
etat ca kavacam divyam rathaḥ ca eṣaḥ arkabhāskaraḥ
31. svayambhuvā asmai surāsuraiḥ avadhyatvam dattam ca

31. Invulnerability against gods and demons was granted to him by Brahmā (svayambhū). And this divine armor, along with this chariot, shines like the sun.
एतेन शतशो देवा दानवाश्च पराजिताः ।
रक्षितानि च रक्षामि यक्षाश्चापि निषूदिताः ॥३२॥
32. etena śataśo devā dānavāśca parājitāḥ ,
rakṣitāni ca rakṣāmi yakṣāścāpi niṣūditāḥ.
32. etena śataśaḥ devāḥ dānavāḥ ca parājitāḥ |
rakṣitāni ca rakṣāṃsi yakṣāḥ ca api niṣūditāḥ
32. etena śataśaḥ devāḥ ca dānavāḥ parājitāḥ ca
rakṣitāni rakṣāṃsi ca api yakṣāḥ niṣūditāḥ
32. By him, hundreds of gods and demons were defeated. He protected the rākṣasas (rakṣas) and annihilated the yakṣas.
वज्रं विष्टम्भितं येन बाणैरिन्द्रस्य धीमतः ।
पाशः सलिलराजस्य युद्धे प्रतिहतस्तथा ॥३३॥
33. vajraṃ viṣṭambhitaṃ yena bāṇairindrasya dhīmataḥ ,
pāśaḥ salilarājasya yuddhe pratihatastathā.
33. vajram viṣṭambhitam yena bāṇaiḥ indrasya dhīmataḥ
| pāśaḥ salilarājasya yuddhe pratihataḥ tathā

33. By him, the thunderbolt (vajra) of the wise Indra was stopped with arrows, and similarly, the noose of Varuṇa, the king of waters, was repelled in battle.
एषो ऽतिकायो बलवान् राक्षसानामथर्षभः ।
रावणस्य सुतो धीमान्देवदनव दर्पहा ॥३४॥
34. eṣo'tikāyo balavān rākṣasānāmatharṣabhaḥ ,
rāvaṇasya suto dhīmāndevadanava darpahā.
34. eṣaḥ atikāyaḥ balavān rākṣasānām atha ṛṣabhaḥ

34. This is Atikāya, the mighty chief among rākṣasas. He is the intelligent son of Rāvaṇa, who crushes the pride of gods and demons.
तदस्मिन् क्रियतां यत्नः क्षिप्रं पुरुषपुंगव ।
पुरा वानरसैन्यानि क्षयं नयति सायकैः ॥३५॥
35. tadasmin kriyatāṃ yatnaḥ kṣipraṃ puruṣapuṃgava ,
purā vānarasainyāni kṣayaṃ nayati sāyakaiḥ.
35. tat asmin kriyatām yatnaḥ kṣipram puruṣapuṅgava
purā vānarasainyāni kṣayam nayati sāyakaiḥ
35. puruṣapuṅgava tat asmin yatnaḥ kṣipram kriyatām

35. O best among men, let effort be quickly applied to this (situation), before he brings the monkey armies to ruin with his arrows.
ततो ऽतिकायो बलवान्प्रविश्य हरिवाहिनीम् ।
विस्फारयामास धनुर्ननाद च पुनः पुनः ॥३६॥
36. tato'tikāyo balavānpraviśya harivāhinīm ,
visphārayāmāsa dhanurnanāda ca punaḥ punaḥ.

36. Then, the mighty Atikāya, after entering the monkey army, twanged his bow and roared repeatedly.
तं भीमवपुषं दृष्ट्वा रथस्थं रथिनां वरम् ।
अभिपेतुर्महात्मानो ये प्रधानाः प्लवंगमाः ॥३७॥
37. taṃ bhīmavapuṣaṃ dṛṣṭvā rathasthaṃ rathināṃ varam ,
abhipeturmahātmāno ye pradhānāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ.

37. Having seen him, of terrible form, situated in his chariot, the foremost of charioteers, the great-souled monkeys who were the leaders rushed towards him.
कुमुदो द्विविदो मैन्दो नीलः शरभ एव च ।
पादपैर्गिरिशृङ्गैश्च युगपत् समभिद्रवन् ॥३८॥
38. kumudo dvivido maindo nīlaḥ śarabha eva ca ,
pādapairgiriśṛṅgaiśca yugapat samabhidravan.

38. Kumuda, Dvivida, Mainda, Nīla, and indeed Śarabha, attacked simultaneously with trees and mountain peaks.
तेषां वृक्षांश्च शैलांश्च शरैः काञ्चनभूषणैः ।
अतिकायो महातेजाश्चिच्छेदास्त्रविदां वरः ॥३९॥
39. teṣāṃ vṛkṣāṃśca śailāṃśca śaraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
atikāyo mahātejāścicchedāstravidāṃ varaḥ.
39. teṣām vṛkṣān ca śailān ca śaraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ
atikāyaḥ mahātejāḥ ciccheda astravidām varaḥ
39. Atikāya, the immensely powerful and best among those skilled in weapons, cut down their trees and mountains with his gold-adadorned arrows.
तांश्चैव सरान् स हरीञ् शरैः सर्वायसैर्बली ।
विव्याधाभिमुखः संख्ये भीमकायो निशाचरः ॥४०॥
40. tāṃścaiva sarān sa harīñ śaraiḥ sarvāyasairbalī ,
vivyādhābhimukhaḥ saṃkhye bhīmakāyo niśācaraḥ.
40. tān ca eva sarān sa harīn śaraiḥ sarvāyasaiḥ balī
vivyādha abhimukhaḥ saṃkhye bhīmakāyaḥ niśācaraḥ
40. The mighty, huge-bodied night-ranger (niśācara), facing them in battle, pierced those lakes and monkeys with his all-iron arrows.
ते ऽर्दिता बाणबर्षेण भिन्नगात्राः प्लवंगमाः ।
न शेकुरतिकायस्य प्रतिकर्तुं महारणे ॥४१॥
41. te'rditā bāṇabarṣeṇa bhinnagātrāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ ,
na śekuratikāyasya pratikartuṃ mahāraṇe.
41. te arditāḥ bāṇabarṣeṇa bhinnagātrāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
na śekuḥ atikāyasya pratikartum mahāraṇe
41. Afflicted by the rain of arrows, their bodies shattered, those monkeys (plavaṅgama) were unable to retaliate against Atikāya in the great battle.
तत् सैन्यं हरिवीराणां त्रासयामास राक्षसः ।
मृगयूथमिव क्रुद्धो हरिर्यौवनमास्थितः ॥४२॥
42. tat sainyaṃ harivīrāṇāṃ trāsayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ ,
mṛgayūthamiva kruddho hariryauvanamāsthitaḥ.
42. tat sainyam harivīrāṇām trāsayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ
mṛgayūtham iva kruddhaḥ hariḥ yauvanam āsthitaḥ
42. The demon (rākṣasa) terrified that army of monkey-heroes, just as an enraged young lion (hari) terrifies a herd of deer.
स राषसेन्द्रो हरिसैन्यमध्ये नायुध्यमानं निजघान कं चित् ।
उपेत्य रामं सधनुः कलापी सगर्वितं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥४३॥
43. sa rāṣasendro harisainyamadhye nāyudhyamānaṃ nijaghāna kaṃ cit ,
upetya rāmaṃ sadhanuḥ kalāpī sagarvitaṃ vākyamidaṃ babhāṣe.
43. saḥ rākṣasendraḥ harisainyamadhye
na āyudhyamānam kam cit
nijaghāna rāmam upetya sadhanuḥ kalāpī
sagarvitam vākyam idam babhāṣe
43. That king of rākṣasas, in the midst of the monkey army, did not kill anyone who was not fighting. Having approached Rāma, he, equipped with a bow and quiver, spoke these arrogant words with great pride.
रथे स्थितो ऽहं शरचापपाणिर्न प्राकृतं कं चन योधयामि ।
यस्यास्ति शक्तिर्व्यवसाय युक्ता ददातुं मे क्षिप्रमिहाद्य युद्धम् ॥४४॥
44. rathe sthito'haṃ śaracāpapāṇirna prākṛtaṃ kaṃ cana yodhayāmi ,
yasyāsti śaktirvyavasāya yuktā dadātuṃ me kṣipramihādya yuddham.
44. rathe sthitaḥ aham śaracāpapāṇiḥ
na prākṛtam kam cana yodhayāmi
yasya asti śaktiḥ vyavasāya yuktā
dadātu me kṣipram iha adya yuddham
44. I, standing in my chariot with arrows and bow in hand, do not fight any ordinary person. Whoever possesses strength coupled with resolve should quickly offer me battle here today.
तत्तस्य वाक्यं ब्रुवतो निशम्य चुकोप सौमित्रिरमित्रहन्ता ।
अमृष्यमाणश्च समुत्पपात जग्राह चापं च ततः स्मयित्वा ॥४५॥
45. tattasya vākyaṃ bruvato niśamya cukopa saumitriramitrahantā ,
amṛṣyamāṇaśca samutpapāta jagrāha cāpaṃ ca tataḥ smayitvā.
45. tat tasya vākyam bruvataḥ niśamya
cukopa saumitriḥ amitrahantā
amṛṣyamāṇaḥ ca samutpapāta
jagrāha cāpam ca tataḥ smayitvā
45. Hearing those words from him, Saumitri, the slayer of foes, grew enraged. Unable to tolerate it, he sprang up and, then smiling, seized his bow.
क्रुद्धः सौमित्रिरुत्पत्य तूणादाक्षिप्य सायकम् ।
पुरस्तादतिकायस्य विचकर्ष महद्धनुः ॥४६॥
46. kruddhaḥ saumitrirutpatya tūṇādākṣipya sāyakam ,
purastādatikāyasya vicakarṣa mahaddhanuḥ.

46. Enraged Saumitri, leaping up and drawing an arrow from his quiver, then strung his great bow in front of Atikāya.
पूरयन् स महीं शैलानाकाशं सागरं दिशः ।
ज्याशब्दो लक्ष्मणस्योग्रस्त्रासयन् रजनीचरान् ॥४७॥
47. pūrayan sa mahīṃ śailānākāśaṃ sāgaraṃ diśaḥ ,
jyāśabdo lakṣmaṇasyograstrāsayan rajanīcarān.
47. pūrayan sa mahīm śailān ākāśam sāgaram diśaḥ
jyāśabdaḥ lakṣmaṇasya ugraḥ trāsayān rajanyīcarān

47. The fierce twang of Lakṣmaṇa's bowstring, filling the earth, the mountains, the sky, the ocean, and all directions, terrified the night-wanderers (rākṣasas).
सौमित्रेश्चापनिर्घोषं श्रुत्वा प्रतिभयं तदा ।
विसिष्मिये महातेजा राक्षसेन्द्रात्मजो बली ॥४८॥
48. saumitreścāpanirghoṣaṃ śrutvā pratibhayaṃ tadā ,
visiṣmiye mahātejā rākṣasendrātmajo balī.

48. Having heard the greatly terrifying twang of Lakṣmaṇa's bow, then the mighty and powerful son of the lord of rākṣasas was greatly astonished.
अथातिकायः कुपितो दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणमुत्थितम् ।
आदाय निशितं बाणमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४९॥
49. athātikāyaḥ kupito dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇamutthitam ,
ādāya niśitaṃ bāṇamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
49. atha atikāyaḥ kupitaḥ dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇam utthitam
ādāya niśitam bāṇam idam vacanam abravīt
49. atha atikāyaḥ kupitaḥ utthitam lakṣmaṇam dṛṣṭvā

49. Then, Atikāya, enraged, having seen Lakṣmaṇa standing up, took a sharpened arrow and spoke these words.
बालस्त्वमसि सौमित्रे विक्रमेष्वविचक्षणः ।
गच्छ किं कालसदृशं मां योधयितुमिच्छसि ॥५०॥
50. bālastvamasi saumitre vikrameṣvavicakṣaṇaḥ ,
gaccha kiṃ kālasadṛśaṃ māṃ yodhayitumicchasi.
50. bālaḥ tvam asi saumitre vikrameṣu avicakṣaṇaḥ
gaccha kim kālasadṛśam mām yodhayitum icchasi
50. saumitre tvam bālaḥ asi vikrameṣu avicakṣaṇaḥ
gaccha kim kālasadṛśam mām yodhayitum icchasi
50. O Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), you are a child, inexperienced in valorous deeds. Go! Why do you wish to fight me, who am like (kāla), the god of death?
न हि मद्बाहुसृष्टानामस्त्राणां हिमवानपि ।
सोढुमुत्सहते वेगमन्तरिक्षमथो मही ॥५१॥
51. na hi madbāhusṛṣṭānāmastrāṇāṃ himavānapi ,
soḍhumutsahate vegamantarikṣamatho mahī.
51. na hi madbāhusṛṣṭānām astrāṇām himavān api
soḍhum utsahate vegam antarikṣam atha u mahī
51. madbāhusṛṣṭānām astrāṇām vegam soḍhum himavān

51. Indeed, not even the Himalaya mountain, nor the atmosphere, nor the earth, is able to withstand the force of the weapons created by my arms.
सुखप्रसुप्तं कालाग्निं प्रबोधयितुमिच्छसि ।
न्यस्य चापं निवर्तस्व मा प्राणाञ्जहि मद्गतः ॥५२॥
52. sukhaprasuptaṃ kālāgniṃ prabodhayitumicchasi ,
nyasya cāpaṃ nivartasva mā prāṇāñjahi madgataḥ.
52. sukhaprasuptam kālāgnim prabodhayitum icchasi
nyasya cāpam nivartasva mā prāṇān jahi madgataḥ
52. tvam sukhaprasuptam kālāgnim prabodhayitum icchasi
cāpam nyasya nivartasva madgataḥ mā prāṇān jahi
52. You wish to awaken the destructive fire (kālāgni) that is deeply slumbering. Lay down your bow and retreat. Do not approach me, or you will lose your life.
अथ वा त्वं प्रतिष्टब्धो न निवर्तितुमिच्छसि ।
तिष्ठ प्राणान्परित्यज्य गमिष्यसि यमक्षयम् ॥५३॥
53. atha vā tvaṃ pratiṣṭabdho na nivartitumicchasi ,
tiṣṭha prāṇānparityajya gamiṣyasi yamakṣayam.
53. atha vā tvam pratiṣṭabdhaḥ na nivartitum icchasi
tiṣṭha prāṇān parityajya gamiṣyasi yamakṣayam
53. atha vā tvam pratiṣṭabdhaḥ na nivartitum icchasi
tiṣṭha prāṇān parityajya yamakṣayam gamiṣyasi
53. Or else, if you are stubborn and do not wish to retreat, then stay here; having abandoned your lives, you will go to the abode of Yama.
पश्य मे निशितान्बाणानरिदर्पनिषूदनान् ।
ईश्वरायुधसंकाशांस्तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणान् ॥५४॥
54. paśya me niśitānbāṇānaridarpaniṣūdanān ,
īśvarāyudhasaṃkāśāṃstaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇān.

54. Behold my sharpened arrows, which destroy the pride of foes, resemble the weapons of the Lord, and are adorned with molten gold.
एष ते सर्पसंकाशो बाणः पास्यति शोणितम् ।
मृगराज इव क्रुद्धो नागराजस्य शोणितम् ॥५५॥
55. eṣa te sarpasaṃkāśo bāṇaḥ pāsyati śoṇitam ,
mṛgarāja iva kruddho nāgarājasya śoṇitam.
55. eṣaḥ te sarpasaṃkāśaḥ bāṇaḥ pāsyati śoṇitam
mṛgarājaḥ iva kruddhaḥ nāgarājasya śoṇitam
55. This serpent-like arrow will drink your blood, just as an enraged lion drinks the blood of a king of serpents.
श्रुत्वातिकायस्य वचः सरोषं सगर्वितं संयति राजपुत्रः ।
स संचुकोपातिबलो बृहच्छ्रीरुवाच वाक्यं च ततो महार्थम् ॥५६॥
56. śrutvātikāyasya vacaḥ saroṣaṃ sagarvitaṃ saṃyati rājaputraḥ ,
sa saṃcukopātibalo bṛhacchrīruvāca vākyaṃ ca tato mahārtham.
56. śrutvā atikāyasya vacaḥ saroṣam
sagarvitam saṃyati rājaputraḥ
saḥ saṃcukopa atibalaḥ bṛhacchrīḥ

56. Upon hearing Atikāya's angry and proud words on the battlefield, the prince (rājaputra), exceedingly powerful and greatly glorious, became very angry and then spoke highly significant words.
न वाक्यमात्रेण भवान्प्रधानो न कत्थनात् सत्पुरुषा भवन्ति ।
मयि स्थिते धन्विनि बाणपाणौ विदर्शयस्वात्मबलं दुरात्मन् ॥५७॥
57. na vākyamātreṇa bhavānpradhāno na katthanāt satpuruṣā bhavanti ,
mayi sthite dhanvini bāṇapāṇau vidarśayasvātmabalaṃ durātman.
57. na vākyamātreṇa bhavān pradhānaḥ
na katthānāt satpuruṣāḥ bhavanti

57. You are not a great person merely by speaking, nor do truly good men become so by boasting. While I, the archer, stand here with an arrow in hand, O evil-minded one, demonstrate your personal strength (ātman).
कर्मणा सूचयात्मानं न विकत्थितुमर्हसि ।
पौरुषेण तु यो युक्तः स तु शूर इति स्मृतः ॥५८॥
58. karmaṇā sūcayātmānaṃ na vikatthitumarhasi ,
pauruṣeṇa tu yo yuktaḥ sa tu śūra iti smṛtaḥ.
58. karmaṇā sūcaya ātmānam na vikatthitum arhasi
pauruṣeṇa tu yaḥ yuktaḥ saḥ tu śūraḥ iti smṛtaḥ
58. You should reveal your true self (ātman) through your actions; you ought not to boast. Indeed, he who is endowed with valor is remembered as a hero.
सर्वायुधसमायुक्तो धन्वी त्वं रथमास्थितः ।
शरैर्वा यदि वाप्यस्त्रैर्दर्शयस्व पराक्रमम् ॥५९॥
59. sarvāyudhasamāyukto dhanvī tvaṃ rathamāsthitaḥ ,
śarairvā yadi vāpyastrairdarśayasva parākramam.

śaraiḥ vā yadi vā api astraiḥ darśayasva parākramam

59. Armed with all weapons, you, the archer mounted on your chariot, should display your prowess either with arrows or with other missiles.
ततः शिरस्ते निशितैः पातयिष्याम्यहं शरैः ।
मारुतः कालसंपक्वं वृन्तात्तालफलं यथा ॥६०॥
60. tataḥ śiraste niśitaiḥ pātayiṣyāmyahaṃ śaraiḥ ,
mārutaḥ kālasaṃpakvaṃ vṛntāttālaphalaṃ yathā.
60. tataḥ śiraḥ te niśitaiḥ pātayiṣyāmi aham śaraiḥ
mārutaḥ kālasampakvam vṛntāt tālaphalām yathā

60. Then I will cut off your head with sharp arrows, just as the wind causes a time-ripened palm fruit to fall from its stalk.
अद्य ते मामका बाणास्तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाः ।
पास्यन्ति रुधिरं गात्राद्बाणशल्यान्तरोत्थितम् ॥६१॥
61. adya te māmakā bāṇāstaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ ,
pāsyanti rudhiraṃ gātrādbāṇaśalyāntarotthitam.

pāsyanti rudhiram gātrāt bāṇaśalyāntarotthitam

61. Today, my arrows, adorned with heated gold, will drink blood from your body, blood that has emerged from within the arrow-wounds.
बालो ऽयमिति विज्ञाय न मावज्ञातुमर्हसि ।
बालो वा यदि वा वृद्धो मृत्युं जानीहि संयुगे ॥६२॥
62. bālo'yamiti vijñāya na māvajñātumarhasi ,
bālo vā yadi vā vṛddho mṛtyuṃ jānīhi saṃyuge.
62. bālaḥ ayam iti vijñāya na mā avajñātum arhasi
bālaḥ vā yadi vā vṛddhaḥ mṛtyum jānīhi saṃyuge

bālaḥ vā yadi vā vṛddhaḥ saṃyuge mṛtyum jānīhi
62. Do not disrespect me, thinking 'this one is a mere boy'. Whether a boy or an old man, know that death is certain in battle.
लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हेतुमत् परमार्थवत् ।
अतिकायः प्रचुक्रोध बाणं चोत्तममाददे ॥६३॥

63. Hearing Lakṣmaṇa's logical and deeply meaningful words, Atikāya became extremely angry and picked up a superb arrow.
ततो विद्याधरा भूता देवा दैत्या महर्षयः ।
गुह्यकाश्च महात्मानस्तद् युद्धं ददृशुस्तदा ॥६४॥
64. tato vidyādharā bhūtā devā daityā maharṣayaḥ ,
guhyakāśca mahātmānastad yuddhaṃ dadṛśustadā.
64. tataḥ vidyādharāḥ bhūtāḥ devāḥ daityāḥ maharṣayaḥ
guhyakāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ tat yuddham dadṛśuḥ tadā

64. Then, the Vidyādharas, various beings, gods, Daityas, great sages (maharṣis), and the noble Guhyakas all witnessed that battle.
ततो ऽतिकायः कुपितश्चापमारोप्य सायकम् ।
लक्ष्मणस्य प्रचिक्षेप संक्षिपन्निव चाम्बरम् ॥६५॥
65. tato'tikāyaḥ kupitaścāpamāropya sāyakam ,
lakṣmaṇasya pracikṣepa saṃkṣipanniva cāmbaram.

65. Then, Atikāya, filled with rage, strung his bow with an arrow and shot it at Lakṣmaṇa, as if shrinking the very sky.
तमापतन्तं निशितं शरमाशीविषोपमम् ।
अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ॥६६॥
66. tamāpatantaṃ niśitaṃ śaramāśīviṣopamam ,
ardhacandreṇa ciccheda lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.

66. Lakṣmaṇa, the slayer of enemy heroes, intercepted that sharp, incoming arrow, which resembled a venomous snake, by cutting it with a crescent-shaped arrow.
तं निकृत्तं शरं दृष्ट्वा कृत्तभोगमिवोरगम् ।
अतिकायो भृशं क्रुद्धः पञ्चबाणान् समाददे ॥६७॥
67. taṃ nikṛttaṃ śaraṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛttabhogamivoragam ,
atikāyo bhṛśaṃ kruddhaḥ pañcabāṇān samādade.

67. Seeing that arrow, severed like a snake with its hood cut off, Atikaya became exceedingly enraged and took up five arrows.
ताञ् शरान् संप्रचिक्षेप लक्ष्मणाय निशाचरः ।
तानप्राप्ताञ् शरैस्तीक्ष्णैश्चिच्छेद भरतानुजः ॥६८॥
68. tāñ śarān saṃpracikṣepa lakṣmaṇāya niśācaraḥ ,
tānaprāptāñ śaraistīkṣṇaiściccheda bharatānujaḥ.

68. The night-wanderer (Atikaya) hurled those arrows at Lakshmana. Bharata's younger brother (Lakshmana) then cut them down with sharp arrows before they could reach (him).
स तांश्छित्त्वा शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
आददे निशितं बाणं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ॥६९॥
69. sa tāṃśchittvā śaraistīkṣṇairlakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ,
ādade niśitaṃ bāṇaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā.

69. Having cut down those (enemy arrows) with sharp arrows, Lakshmana, the slayer of enemy heroes, then took up a sharpened arrow that was blazing with splendor.
तमादाय धनुः श्रेष्ठे योजयामास लक्ष्मणः ।
विचकर्ष च वेगेन विससर्ज च सायकम् ॥७०॥
70. tamādāya dhanuḥ śreṣṭhe yojayāmāsa lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
vicakarṣa ca vegena visasarja ca sāyakam.

70. Lakshmana, having taken that (arrow), fixed it upon his excellent bow, and swiftly drew (the bowstring), and then released the arrow.
पूर्णायतविसृष्टेन शरेणानत पर्वणा ।
ललाटे राक्षसश्रेष्ठमाजघान स वीर्यवान् ॥७१॥
71. pūrṇāyatavisṛṣṭena śareṇānata parvaṇā ,
lalāṭe rākṣasaśreṣṭhamājaghāna sa vīryavān.

71. That mighty warrior struck the chief of the rākṣasas on the forehead with an arrow, discharged from a fully drawn bow and having a straight shaft.
स ललाटे शरो मग्नस्तस्य भीमस्य रक्षसः ।
ददृशे शोणितेनाक्तः पन्नगेन्द्र इवाहवे ॥७२॥
72. sa lalāṭe śaro magnastasya bhīmasya rakṣasaḥ ,
dadṛśe śoṇitenāktaḥ pannagendra ivāhave.

72. That arrow, sunk into the forehead of that formidable rākṣasa, appeared, stained with blood, like a great serpent (pannagendra) in battle.
राक्षसः प्रचकम्पे च लक्ष्मणेषु प्रकम्पितः ।
रुद्रबाणहतं भीमं यथा त्रिपुरगोपुरम् ॥७३॥
73. rākṣasaḥ pracakampe ca lakṣmaṇeṣu prakampitaḥ ,
rudrabāṇahataṃ bhīmaṃ yathā tripuragopuram.

73. And the rākṣasa trembled, made to quake by Lakṣmaṇa's arrows, just as the mighty gate of Tripura (tripuragopura) once quaked when struck by Rudra's arrow.
चिन्तयामास चाश्वस्य विमृश्य च महाबलः ।
साधु बाणनिपातेन श्वाघनीयो ऽसि मे रिपुः ॥७४॥
74. cintayāmāsa cāśvasya vimṛśya ca mahābalaḥ ,
sādhu bāṇanipātena śvāghanīyo'si me ripuḥ.

74. And that mighty one, having composed himself and pondered, thought: 'Indeed, by this arrow's impact, you are a praiseworthy foe to me!'
विचार्यैवं विनम्यास्यं विनम्य च भुजाव् उभौ ।
स रथोपस्थमास्थाय रथेन प्रचचार ह ॥७५॥
75. vicāryaivaṃ vinamyāsyaṃ vinamya ca bhujāv ubhau ,
sa rathopasthamāsthāya rathena pracacāra ha.

75. Having thus pondered, bending his face and both his arms, he mounted the chariot's seat and then proceeded with his chariot.
एकं त्रीन्पञ्च सप्तेति सायकान् राक्षसर्षभः ।
आददे संदधे चापि विचकर्षोत्ससर्ज च ॥७६॥
76. ekaṃ trīnpañca sapteti sāyakān rākṣasarṣabhaḥ ,
ādade saṃdadhe cāpi vicakarṣotsasarja ca.

76. The chieftain among the rākṣasas took arrows, sometimes one, sometimes three, five, or seven at a time, aimed them, drew his bow, and then released them.
ते बाणाः कालसंकाशा राक्षसेन्द्रधनुश्च्युताः ।
हेमपुङ्खा रविप्रख्याश्चक्रुर्दीप्तमिवाम्बरम् ॥७७॥
77. te bāṇāḥ kālasaṃkāśā rākṣasendradhanuścyutāḥ ,
hemapuṅkhā raviprakhyāścakrurdīptamivāmbaram.

77. Those arrows, dreadful like death, with golden shafts and shining like the sun, released from the bow of the lord of the rākṣasas, made the sky appear to glow brightly.
ततस्तान् राक्षसोत्सृष्टाञ् शरौघान् रावणानुजः ।
असंभ्रान्तः प्रचिच्छेद निशितैर्बहुभिः शरैः ॥७८॥
78. tatastān rākṣasotsṛṣṭāñ śaraughān rāvaṇānujaḥ ,
asaṃbhrāntaḥ praciccheda niśitairbahubhiḥ śaraiḥ.

78. Then, Rāvaṇa's younger brother, unperturbed, intercepted and cut down those barrages of arrows discharged by the rākṣasa, using many of his own sharp arrows.
ताञ् शरान्युधि संप्रेक्ष्य निकृत्तान् रावणात्मजः ।
चुकोप त्रिदशेन्द्रारिर्जग्राह निशितं शरम् ॥७९॥
79. tāñ śarānyudhi saṃprekṣya nikṛttān rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
cukopa tridaśendrārirjagrāha niśitaṃ śaram.

79. Having seen those arrows cut off in battle, Rāvaṇa's son, the enemy of the lords of gods, became enraged and seized a sharpened arrow.
स संधाय महातेजास्तं बाणं सहसोत्सृजत् ।
ततः सौमित्रिमायान्तमाजघान स्तनान्तरे ॥८०॥
80. sa saṃdhāya mahātejāstaṃ bāṇaṃ sahasotsṛjat ,
tataḥ saumitrimāyāntamājaghāna stanāntare.

80. That very mighty one, having aimed that arrow, suddenly released it. Then, he struck Lakṣmaṇa, who was approaching, in the middle of the chest.
अतिकायेन सौमित्रिस्ताडितो युधि वक्षसि ।
सुस्राव रुधिरं तीव्रं मदं मत्त इव द्विपः ॥८१॥
81. atikāyena saumitristāḍito yudhi vakṣasi ,
susrāva rudhiraṃ tīvraṃ madaṃ matta iva dvipaḥ.

81. Struck by Atikāya on the chest in battle, Lakṣmaṇa bled profusely, like an intoxicated elephant oozing ichor.
स चकार तदात्मानं विशल्यं सहसा विभुः ।
जग्राह च शरं तीष्णमस्त्रेणापि समादधे ॥८२॥
82. sa cakāra tadātmānaṃ viśalyaṃ sahasā vibhuḥ ,
jagrāha ca śaraṃ tīṣṇamastreṇāpi samādadhe.
82. sa cakāra tadā ātmānaṃ viśalyaṃ sahasā vibhuḥ
jagrāha ca śaraṃ tīkṣṇam astreṇa api samādhe
82. tadā saḥ vibhuḥ sahasā ātmānaṃ viśalyaṃ cakāra
saḥ tīkṣṇam śaraṃ jagrāha ca astreṇa api samādhe
82. Then, that powerful one quickly freed himself of the arrow. He then took a sharp arrow and aimed it with a divine missile.
आग्नेयेन तदास्त्रेण योजयामास सायकम् ।
स जज्वाल तदा बाणो धनुश्चास्य महात्मनः ॥८३॥
83. āgneyena tadāstreṇa yojayāmāsa sāyakam ,
sa jajvāla tadā bāṇo dhanuścāsya mahātmanaḥ.

jajvāla tadā bāṇaḥ dhanuḥ ca asya mahātmanaḥ
83. Then, he fitted the arrow with the Agneya missile. At that moment, that arrow and the bow of that great-souled one blazed forth.
अतिकायो ऽतितेजस्वी सौरमस्त्रं समाददे ।
तेन बाणं भुजंगाभं हेमपुङ्खमयोजयत् ॥८४॥
84. atikāyo'titejasvī sauramastraṃ samādade ,
tena bāṇaṃ bhujaṃgābhaṃ hemapuṅkhamayojayat.

84. Atikaya, exceedingly powerful, took up the solar missile. With its power, he fitted an arrow that resembled a snake and had a golden shaft.
ततस्तं ज्वलितं घोरं लक्ष्मणः शरमाहितम् ।
अतिकायाय चिक्षेप कालदण्डमिवान्तकः ॥८५॥
85. tatastaṃ jvalitaṃ ghoraṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ śaramāhitam ,
atikāyāya cikṣepa kāladaṇḍamivāntakaḥ.
85. tataḥ tam jvalitam ghoram lakṣmaṇaḥ śaram
āhitam atikāyāya cikṣepa kāladaṇḍam iva antakaḥ
85. Then Lakshmana, like Yama (the god of death) with his rod of demise, shot that blazing, terrible arrow, already fitted (to the bowstring), at Atikaya.
आग्नेयेनाभिसंयुक्तं दृष्ट्वा बाणं निशाचरः ।
उत्ससर्ज तदा बाणं दीप्तं सूर्यास्त्रयोजितम् ॥८६॥
86. āgneyenābhisaṃyuktaṃ dṛṣṭvā bāṇaṃ niśācaraḥ ,
utsasarja tadā bāṇaṃ dīptaṃ sūryāstrayojitam.

utsasarja tadā bāṇam dīptam sūryāstrayojitam
86. Having seen the arrow empowered by the Agneya missile, the night-wanderer (Atikaya) then discharged his own blazing arrow, fitted with the Sūryāstra (solar missile).
ताव् उभावम्बरे बाणावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ।
तेजसा संप्रदीप्ताग्रौ क्रुद्धाविव भुजं गमौ ॥८७॥
87. tāv ubhāvambare bāṇāvanyonyamabhijaghnatuḥ ,
tejasā saṃpradīptāgrau kruddhāviva bhujaṃ gamau.
87. tau ubhau ambare bāṇau anyonyam abhijaghmatuḥ
tejasā sampradīptāgrau kruddhāu iva bhujamgamau

87. Both those arrows, blazing brightly with energy at their tips like two enraged serpents, struck each other in the sky.
तावन्योन्यं विनिर्दह्य पेततुर्धरणीतले ।
निरर्चिषौ भस्मकृतौ न भ्राजेते शरोत्तमौ ॥८८॥
88. tāvanyonyaṃ vinirdahya petaturdharaṇītale ,
nirarciṣau bhasmakṛtau na bhrājete śarottamau.

88. Having completely consumed each other, those two excellent arrows, now flameless and reduced to ashes, fell to the ground and did not shine.
ततो ऽतिकायः संक्रुद्धस्त्वस्त्रमैषीकमुत्सृजत् ।
तत् प्रचिच्छेद सौमित्रिरस्त्रमैन्द्रेण वीर्यवान् ॥८९॥
89. tato'tikāyaḥ saṃkruddhastvastramaiṣīkamutsṛjat ,
tat praciccheda saumitrirastramaindreṇa vīryavān.

89. Then Atikāya, greatly enraged, unleashed the Aiṣīka missile. The valorous son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa) countered that by severing it with the Aindra missile.
ऐषीकं निहतं दृष्ट्वा कुमारो रावणात्मजः ।
याम्येनास्त्रेण संक्रुद्धो योजयामास सायकम् ॥९०॥
90. aiṣīkaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā kumāro rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,
yāmyenāstreṇa saṃkruddho yojayāmāsa sāyakam.

90. Seeing the Aiṣīka missile destroyed, the prince, Rāvaṇa's son (Indrajit), became greatly enraged and equipped his arrow with the Yamya missile.
ततस्तदस्त्रं चिक्षेप लक्ष्मणाय निशाचरः ।
वायव्येन तदस्त्रं तु निजघान स लक्ष्मणः ॥९१॥
91. tatastadastraṃ cikṣepa lakṣmaṇāya niśācaraḥ ,
vāyavyena tadastraṃ tu nijaghāna sa lakṣmaṇaḥ.

91. Then the night-wanderer (demon) hurled that weapon at Lakshmana. But Lakshmana, with the Vāyavya weapon, struck down that very weapon.
अथैनं शरधाराभिर्धाराभिरिव तोयदः ।
अभ्यवर्षत संक्रुद्धो लक्ष्मणो रावणात्मजम् ॥९२॥
92. athainaṃ śaradhārābhirdhārābhiriva toyadaḥ ,
abhyavarṣata saṃkruddho lakṣmaṇo rāvaṇātmajam.

abhyavarṣata saṃkruddhaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ rāvaṇātmajam

92. Then Lakshmana, greatly enraged, showered him, Ravana's son, with streams of arrows, just as a cloud pours down streams of rain.
ते ऽतिकायं समासाद्य कवचे वज्रभूषिते ।
भग्नाग्रशल्याः सहसा पेतुर्बाणा महीतले ॥९३॥
93. te'tikāyaṃ samāsādya kavace vajrabhūṣite ,
bhagnāgraśalyāḥ sahasā peturbāṇā mahītale.

93. Those arrows, upon striking Atikaya's armor, which was adorned with diamonds (or thunderbolts), suddenly fell to the ground with their points shattered.
तान्मोघानभिसंप्रेक्ष्य लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
अभ्यवर्षत बाणानां सहस्रेण महायशाः ॥९४॥
94. tānmoghānabhisaṃprekṣya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ,
abhyavarṣata bāṇānāṃ sahasreṇa mahāyaśāḥ.

94. Lakshmana, the slayer of enemy warriors, observing those arrows to be futile, then showered (Atikaya) with a thousand (more) arrows, he who was highly renowned.
स वर्ष्यमाणो बाणौघैरतिकायो महाबलः ।
अवध्यकवचः संख्ये राक्षसो नैव विव्यथे ॥९५॥
95. sa varṣyamāṇo bāṇaughairatikāyo mahābalaḥ ,
avadhyakavacaḥ saṃkhye rākṣaso naiva vivyathe.
95. saḥ varṣyamāṇaḥ bāṇaughaiḥ atikāyaḥ mahābalaḥ
avadhyakavacaḥ saṃkhye rākṣasaḥ na eva vivyathe
95. atikāyaḥ saḥ mahābalaḥ rākṣasaḥ avadhyakavacaḥ
saṃkhye bāṇaughaiḥ varṣyamāṇaḥ na eva vivyathe
95. The mighty Atikaya, the demon protected by an invulnerable armor in battle, was not at all wounded even when being showered by torrents of arrows.
न शशाक रुजं कर्तुं युधि तस्य नरोत्तमः ।
अथैनमभ्युपागम्य वायुर्वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥९६॥
96. na śaśāka rujaṃ kartuṃ yudhi tasya narottamaḥ ,
athainamabhyupāgamya vāyurvākyamuvāca ha.
96. na śaśāka rujam kartum yudhi tasya narottamaḥ
atha enam abhyupāgamya vāyuḥ vākyam uvāca ha
96. narottamaḥ tasya rujam yudhi kartum na śaśāka

96. The best of men (Lakṣmaṇa) was unable to inflict any wound upon him (Atikaya) in battle. Then Vayu, the wind god, approached him and spoke these words.
ब्रह्मदत्तवरो ह्येष अवध्य कवचावृतः ।
ब्राह्मेणास्त्रेण भिन्ध्येनमेष वध्यो हि नान्यथा ॥९७॥
97. brahmadattavaro hyeṣa avadhya kavacāvṛtaḥ ,
brāhmeṇāstreṇa bhindhyenameṣa vadhyo hi nānyathā.
97. brahmadattavaraḥ hi eṣaḥ avadhya kavacāvṛtaḥ brāhmeṇa
astreṇa bhindhi enam eṣaḥ vadhyaḥ hi na anyathā

97. Indeed, this one (Atikaya) has been granted a boon by Brahmā and is covered by an invulnerable armor. Pierce him with a divine weapon (brāhmam astra); he is vulnerable only in this way, not otherwise.
ततः स वायोर्वचनं निशम्य सौमित्रिरिन्द्रप्रतिमानवीर्यः ।
समाददे बाणममोघवेगं तद्ब्राह्ममस्त्रं सहसा नियोज्य ॥९८॥
98. tataḥ sa vāyorvacanaṃ niśamya saumitririndrapratimānavīryaḥ ,
samādade bāṇamamoghavegaṃ tadbrāhmamastraṃ sahasā niyojya.

saumitriḥ indrapratimānavīryaḥ
samādade bāṇam amoghavegam
tat brāhmam astram sahasā niyojya

98. Then, having heard Vayu's words, Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), whose valor was equal to Indra's, quickly took up an arrow of unfailing power, empowering it with that divine Brahmā weapon (brāhmam astra).
तस्मिन् वरास्त्रे तु नियुज्यमाने सौमित्रिणा बाणवरे शिताग्रे ।
दिशः सचन्द्रार्कमहाग्रहाश्च नभश्च तत्रास ररास चोर्वी ॥९९॥
99. tasmin varāstre tu niyujyamāne saumitriṇā bāṇavare śitāgre ,
diśaḥ sacandrārkamahāgrahāśca nabhaśca tatrāsa rarāsa corvī.

99. When that excellent, sharp-pointed supreme arrow, the weapon, was being fixed by Lakshmana, the directions along with the moon, sun, and great planets, and also the sky, trembled, and the earth roared.
तं ब्रह्मणो ऽस्त्रेण नियुज्य चापे शरं सुपुङ्खं यमदूतकल्पम् ।
सौमित्रिरिन्द्रारिसुतस्य तस्य ससर्ज बाणं युधि वज्रकल्पम् ॥१००॥
100. taṃ brahmaṇo'streṇa niyujya cāpe śaraṃ supuṅkhaṃ yamadūtakalpam ,
saumitririndrārisutasya tasya sasarja bāṇaṃ yudhi vajrakalpam.
100. tam brahmaṇaḥ astreṇa niyujya cāpe
śaram supuṅkham yamadūtakalpam
saumitriḥ indrārisutasya tasya
sasarja bāṇam yudhi vajrakalpam
100. saumitriḥ tam supuṅkham yamadūtakalpam śaram brahmaṇaḥ astreṇa cāpe niyujya,
tasya indrārisutasya bāṇam vajrakalpam yudhi sasarja.
100. Having fixed that well-feathered arrow, which was like a messenger of Yama, on his bow as a Brahma weapon, Lakshmana then shot that arrow, which was like a thunderbolt, at the son of Indra's enemy (Atikāya) in battle.
तं लक्ष्मणोत्सृष्टममोघवेगं समापतन्तं ज्वलनप्रकाशम् ।
सुवर्णवज्रोत्तमचित्रपुङ्खं तदातिकायः समरे ददर्श ॥१०१॥
101. taṃ lakṣmaṇotsṛṣṭamamoghavegaṃ samāpatantaṃ jvalanaprakāśam ,
suvarṇavajrottamacitrapuṅkhaṃ tadātikāyaḥ samare dadarśa.

101. tadā atikāyaḥ samare tam lakṣmaṇotsṛṣṭam amoghavegam samāpatantam jvalanaprakāśam suvarṇavajrottamacitrapuṅkham dadarśa.
101. Then in battle, Atikāya saw that arrow, released by Lakshmana, which had unfailing speed, was approaching (him), shone like fire, and had an excellent, variegated feather-end of gold and diamond.
तं प्रेक्षमाणः सहसातिकायो जघान बाणैर्निशितैरनेकैः ।
स सायकस्तस्य सुपर्णवेगस्तदातिवेगेन जगाम पार्श्वम् ॥१०२॥
102. taṃ prekṣamāṇaḥ sahasātikāyo jaghāna bāṇairniśitairanekaiḥ ,
sa sāyakastasya suparṇavegastadātivegena jagāma pārśvam.
102. tam prekṣamāṇaḥ sahasā atikāyaḥ
jaghāna bāṇaiḥ niśitaiḥ anekaiḥ
saḥ sāyakaḥ tasya suparṇavegaḥ
tadā ativegena jagāma pārśvam
102. atikāyaḥ tam prekṣamāṇaḥ sahasā niśitaiḥ anekaiḥ bāṇaiḥ jaghāna.
tadā saḥ tasya sāyakaḥ suparṇavegaḥ ativegena pārśvam jagāma.
102. Suddenly, Atikāya, observing that (approaching arrow), struck it with many sharp arrows. (However,) that arrow (from Lakshmana), swift as a divine eagle, then passed with great speed to his (Atikāya's) side.
तमागतं प्रेक्ष्य तदातिकायो बाणं प्रदीप्तान्तककालकल्पम् ।
जघान शक्त्यृष्टिगदाकुठारैः शूलैर्हलैश्चाप्यविपन्नचेष्टः ॥१०३॥
103. tamāgataṃ prekṣya tadātikāyo bāṇaṃ pradīptāntakakālakalpam ,
jaghāna śaktyṛṣṭigadākuṭhāraiḥ śūlairhalaiścāpyavipannaceṣṭaḥ.
103. tam āgatam prekṣya tadā atikāyaḥ
bāṇam pradīptāntakakālakalpam
jaghāna śaktyṛṣṭigadākuṭhāraiḥ
śūlaiḥ halaiḥ ca api avipannaceṣṭaḥ
103. tadā avipannaceṣṭaḥ atikāyaḥ
pradīptāntakakālakalpam āgatam tam
bāṇam prekṣya śaktyṛṣṭigadākuṭhāraiḥ
śūlaiḥ halaiḥ ca api jaghāna
103. Then, Atikāya, undeterred in his actions, upon seeing that approaching arrow - which resembled the blazing Kāla, the deity of ultimate destruction - struck it with spears, javelins, maces, axes, lances, and heavy clubs.
तान्यायुधान्यद्भुतविग्रहाणि मोघानि कृत्वा स शरो ऽग्निदीप्तः ।
प्रसह्य तस्यैव किरीटजुष्टं तदातिकायस्य शिरो जहार ॥१०४॥
104. tānyāyudhānyadbhutavigrahāṇi moghāni kṛtvā sa śaro'gnidīptaḥ ,
prasahya tasyaiva kirīṭajuṣṭaṃ tadātikāyasya śiro jahāra.
104. tāni āyudhāni adbhutavigrahāṇi
moghāni kṛtvā saḥ śaraḥ agnidīptaḥ
prasahya tasya eva kirīṭajuṣṭam
tadā atikāyasya śiraḥ jahāra
104. agnidīptaḥ saḥ śaraḥ adbhutavigrahāṇi
tāni āyudhāni moghāni
kṛtvā tadā tasya eva atikāyasya
kirīṭajuṣṭam śiraḥ prasahya jahāra
104. That arrow, blazing like fire, rendered those wondrous and powerful weapons useless, and then forcefully severed the crown-adorned head of Atikāya himself.
तच्छिरः सशिरस्त्राणं लक्ष्मणेषुप्रपीडितम् ।
पपात सहसा भूमौ शृङ्गं हिमवतो यथा ॥१०५॥
105. tacchiraḥ saśirastrāṇaṃ lakṣmaṇeṣuprapīḍitam ,
papāta sahasā bhūmau śṛṅgaṃ himavato yathā.
105. tat śiraḥ saśirastrāṇam lakṣmaṇeṣuprapīḍitam
papāta sahasā bhūmau śṛṅgam himavataḥ yathā
105. saśirastrāṇam lakṣmaṇeṣuprapīḍitam tat śiraḥ

105. That head, still bearing its helmet and severely struck by Lakṣmaṇa's arrow, suddenly fell to the ground, just like a peak severed from the Himalayas.
प्रहर्षयुक्ता बहवस्तु वानरा प्रबुद्धपद्मप्रतिमाननास्तदा ।
अपूजयंल् लक्ष्मणमिष्टभागिनं हते रिपौ भीमबले दुरासदे ॥१०६॥
106. praharṣayuktā bahavastu vānarā prabuddhapadmapratimānanāstadā ,
apūjayaṃl lakṣmaṇamiṣṭabhāginaṃ hate ripau bhīmabale durāsade.

106. Then, many monkeys, filled with great joy and with faces resembling blooming lotuses, honored Lakṣmaṇa, who had achieved his desired success, as the formidable and terribly powerful enemy was slain.
