वीक्षमाणस्तु मन्दासुः सर्वतो मन्दमुच्छ्वसन् ।
आदावेव तु सुग्रीवं ददर्श त्वात्मजाग्रतः ॥१॥
1. vīkṣamāṇastu mandāsuḥ sarvato mandamucchvasan ,

1. Indeed, with his life ebbing, looking all around and sighing slowly, he (Vali) first saw you, Sugriva, who stood with your son (Angada) in front.
तं प्राप्तविजयं वाली सुग्रीवं प्लवगेश्वरम् ।
आभाष्य व्यक्तया वाचा सस्नेहमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. taṃ prāptavijayaṃ vālī sugrīvaṃ plavageśvaram ,
ābhāṣya vyaktayā vācā sasnehamidamabravīt.

2. Vali, having addressed Sugriva, the lord of the monkeys who had achieved victory, spoke these words to him affectionately and with clear speech.
सुग्रीवदोषेण न मां गन्तुमर्हसि किल्बिषात् ।
कृष्यमाणं भविष्येण बुद्धिमोहेन मां बलात् ॥३॥
3. sugrīvadoṣeṇa na māṃ gantumarhasi kilbiṣāt ,
kṛṣyamāṇaṃ bhaviṣyeṇa buddhimohena māṃ balāt.
3. sugrīvadoṣeṇa na mām gantum arhasi kilbiṣāt |
kṛṣyamāṇam bhaviṣyeṇa buddhimōhena mām balāt
3. sugrīvadoṣeṇa mām na gantum arhasi kilbiṣāt
bhaviṣyeṇa buddhimōhena balāt kṛṣyamāṇam mām (asti)
3. You should not incur any wrongdoing (kilbiṣa) concerning me due to Sugriva's fault, for I am being forcibly dragged away by destiny and by a delusion of intellect.
युगपद्विहितं तात न मन्ये सुखमावयोः ।
सौहार्दं भ्रातृयुक्तं हि तदिदं जातमन्यथा ॥४॥
4. yugapadvihitaṃ tāta na manye sukhamāvayoḥ ,
sauhārdaṃ bhrātṛyuktaṃ hi tadidaṃ jātamanyathā.
4. yugapat vihitam tāta na manye sukham āvayoḥ
sauhārdam bhrātṛyuktam hi tat idam jātam anyathā
4. tāta āvayoḥ yugapat vihitam sukham na manye hi
tat idam bhrātṛyuktam sauhārdam anyathā jātam
4. Dear one, I do not believe that happiness for us both was simultaneously ordained. Indeed, this brotherly affection has turned out quite differently.
प्रतिपद्य त्वमद्यैव राज्यमेषां वनौकसाम् ।
मामप्यद्यैव गच्छन्तं विद्धि वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥५॥
5. pratipadya tvamadyaiva rājyameṣāṃ vanaukasām ,
māmapyadyaiva gacchantaṃ viddhi vaivasvatakṣayam.
5. pratipadya tvam adya eva rājyam eṣām vanaukasām
mām api adya eva gacchantam viddhi vaivasvatakṣayam
5. tvam adya eva eṣām vanaukasām rājyam pratipadya
api mām adya eva vaivasvatakṣayam gacchantam viddhi
5. You, right now, accept the kingship over these forest dwellers. And know that I too am departing right now to the abode of Yama (death).
जीवितं च हि राज्यं च श्रियं च विपुलामिमाम् ।
प्रजहाम्येष वै तूर्णं महच्चागर्हितं यशः ॥६॥
6. jīvitaṃ ca hi rājyaṃ ca śriyaṃ ca vipulāmimām ,
prajahāmyeṣa vai tūrṇaṃ mahaccāgarhitaṃ yaśaḥ.
6. jīvitam ca hi rājyam ca śriyam ca vipulām imām
prajahāmi eṣaḥ vai tūrṇam mahat ca agarhitam yaśaḥ
6. hi eṣaḥ vai aham tūrṇam jīvitam ca rājyam ca imām
vipulām śriyam ca mahat agarhitam yaśaḥ ca prajahāmi
6. Indeed, I swiftly relinquish this life, and kingdom, and vast prosperity, and also great, unblemished glory.
अस्यां त्वहमवस्थायां वीर वक्ष्यामि यद्वचः ।
यद्यप्यसुकरं राजन् कर्तुमेव तदर्हसि ॥७॥
7. asyāṃ tvahamavasthāyāṃ vīra vakṣyāmi yadvacaḥ ,
yadyapyasukaraṃ rājan kartumeva tadarhasi.
7. asyām tu aham avasthāyām vīra vakṣyāmi yat vacaḥ
yadyapi asukaram rājan kartum eva tat arhasi
7. vīra rājan,
asyām avasthāyām aham tu yat vacaḥ vakṣyāmi,
tat yadyapi asukaram,
kartum eva arhasi
7. But, O hero, in this situation, I will tell you something which, O king, you must indeed do, even if it is difficult to accomplish.
सुखार्हं सुखसंवृद्धं बालमेनमबालिशम् ।
बाष्पपूर्णमुखं पश्य भूमौ पतितमङ्गदम् ॥८॥
8. sukhārhaṃ sukhasaṃvṛddhaṃ bālamenamabāliśam ,
bāṣpapūrṇamukhaṃ paśya bhūmau patitamaṅgadam.
8. sukha-arham sukha-saṃvṛddham bālam enam abāliśam
bāṣpa-pūrṇa-mukham paśya bhūmau patitam aṅgadam
8. paśya enam aṅgadam bālam sukha-arham sukha-saṃvṛddham
abāliśam bāṣpa-pūrṇa-mukham bhūmau patitam
8. Behold this Angada, a child who deserves comfort and was raised in comfort, yet is not foolish. See him with a face full of tears, fallen on the ground.
मम प्राणैः प्रियतरं पुत्रं पुत्रमिवौरसं ।
मया हीनमहीनार्थं सर्वतः परिपालय ॥९॥
9. mama prāṇaiḥ priyataraṃ putraṃ putramivaurasaṃ ,
mayā hīnamahīnārthaṃ sarvataḥ paripālaya.
9. mama prāṇaiḥ priyataram putram putram iva
aurasam mayā hīnam ahīnārtham sarvataḥ paripālaya
9. (tvam) mama prāṇaiḥ priyataram putram aurasam putram
iva mayā hīnam ahīnārtham sarvataḥ paripālaya
9. Protect this son, who is dearer to me than my own life, as if he were your own legitimate son. Now deprived of me, he is not diminished in his worth; protect him completely.
त्वमप्यस्य हि दाता च परित्राता च सर्वतः ।
भयेष्वभयदश्चैव यथाहं प्लवगेश्वर ॥१०॥
10. tvamapyasya hi dātā ca paritrātā ca sarvataḥ ,
bhayeṣvabhayadaścaiva yathāhaṃ plavageśvara.
10. tvam api asya hi dātā ca paritrātā ca sarvataḥ
bhayeṣu abhayadaḥ ca eva yathā aham plavaga-īśvara
10. plavaga-īśvara,
tvam hi asya dātā ca sarvataḥ paritrātā ca bhayeṣu abhayadaḥ ca eva,
yathā aham (āsam,
implied)
10. O lord of monkeys, you, indeed, are his provider and his complete protector from all quarters. You are also the one who gives him fearlessness in times of danger, just as I was.
एष तारात्मजः श्रीमांस्त्वया तुल्यपराक्रमः ।
रक्षसां तु वधे तेषामग्रतस्ते भविष्यति ॥११॥
11. eṣa tārātmajaḥ śrīmāṃstvayā tulyaparākramaḥ ,
rakṣasāṃ tu vadhe teṣāmagrataste bhaviṣyati.
11. eṣa tārā-ātmajaḥ śrīmān tvayā tulya-parākramaḥ
rakṣasām tu vadhe teṣām agrataḥ te bhaviṣyati
11. eṣaḥ śrīmān tārā-ātmajaḥ tvayā tulya-parākramaḥ
tu teṣām rakṣasām vadhe te agrataḥ bhaviṣyati
11. This glorious son of Tārā, whose valor is equal to yours, will certainly be at the forefront for you in the destruction of those Rākṣasas.
अनुरूपाणि कर्माणि विक्रम्य बलवान् रणे ।
करिष्यत्येष तारेयस्तरस्वी तरुणो ऽङ्गदः ॥१२॥
12. anurūpāṇi karmāṇi vikramya balavān raṇe ,
kariṣyatyeṣa tāreyastarasvī taruṇo'ṅgadaḥ.
12. anurūpāṇi karmāṇi vikramya balavān raṇe
kariṣyati eṣaḥ tāreyaḥ tarasvī taruṇaḥ aṅgadaḥ
12. eṣaḥ tāreyaḥ taruṇaḥ tarasvī balavān aṅgadaḥ
raṇe vikramya anurūpāṇi karmāṇi kariṣyati
12. This Angada, son of Tārā, who is young, energetic, and powerful, will demonstrate his valor in battle and perform actions (karma) appropriate to him.
सुषेणदुहिता चेयमर्थसूक्ष्मविनिश्चये ।
औत्पातिके च विविधे सर्वतः परिनिष्ठिता ॥१३॥
13. suṣeṇaduhitā ceyamarthasūkṣmaviniścaye ,
autpātike ca vividhe sarvataḥ pariniṣṭhitā.
13. suṣeṇaduhitā ca iyam arthasūkṣmavinirṇaye
autpātike ca vividhe sarvataḥ pariniṣṭhitā
13. ca iyam suṣeṇaduhitā arthasūkṣmavinirṇaye
ca vividhe autpātike sarvataḥ pariniṣṭhitā
13. And this daughter of Suṣeṇa is fully proficient in discerning subtle meanings and in various kinds of portents.
यदेषा साध्विति ब्रूयात् कार्यं तन्मुक्तसंशयम् ।
न हि तारामतं किं चिदन्यथा परिवर्तते ॥१४॥
14. yadeṣā sādhviti brūyāt kāryaṃ tanmuktasaṃśayam ,
na hi tārāmataṃ kiṃ cidanyathā parivartate.
14. yat eṣā sādhu iti brūyāt kāryam tat muktaśaṃśayam
na hi tārāmatam kim cit anyathā parivartate
14. yat eṣā sādhu iti brūyāt tat kāryam muktaśaṃśayam
hi tārāmatam kim cit anyathā na parivartate
14. Whatever she declares to be correct, that course of action is undoubtedly sound. Indeed, Tārā's opinion never proves to be wrong.
राघवस्य च ते कार्यं कर्तव्यमविशङ्कया ।
स्यादधर्मो ह्यकरणे त्वां च हिंस्याद्विमानितः ॥१५॥
15. rāghavasya ca te kāryaṃ kartavyamaviśaṅkayā ,
syādadharmo hyakaraṇe tvāṃ ca hiṃsyādvimānitaḥ.
15. rāghavasya ca te kāryam kartavyam aviśaṅkayā syāt
adharmaḥ hi akaraṇe tvām ca hiṃsyāt vimānitaḥ
15. ca te rāghavasya kāryam aviśaṅkayā kartavyam hi
akaraṇe adharmaḥ syāt ca vimānitaḥ tvām hiṃsyāt
15. And you must perform Rāghava's (Rāma's) task without hesitation. Indeed, non-performance would constitute a violation of natural law (dharma), and a dishonored Rāma might harm you.
इमां च मालामाधत्स्व दिव्यां सुग्रीवकाञ्चनीम् ।
उदारा श्रीः स्थिता ह्यस्यां संप्रजह्यान्मृते मयि ॥१६॥
16. imāṃ ca mālāmādhatsva divyāṃ sugrīvakāñcanīm ,
udārā śrīḥ sthitā hyasyāṃ saṃprajahyānmṛte mayi.
16. imām ca mālām ādhatsva divyām sugrīva kāñcanīm
udārā śrīḥ sthitā hi asyām samprajahyāt mṛte mayi
16. sugrīva imām ca divyām kāñcanīm mālām ādhatsva
udārā śrīḥ hi asyām sthitā mayi mṛte samprajahyāt
16. And, O Sugriva, wear this divine, golden garland. Indeed, exalted fortune (śrī) resides in it, but this (fortune) would completely abandon it upon my death.
इत्येवमुक्तः सुग्रीवो वालिना भ्रातृसौहृदात् ।
हर्षं त्यक्त्वा पुनर्दीनो ग्रहग्रस्त इवोडुराट् ॥१७॥
17. ityevamuktaḥ sugrīvo vālinā bhrātṛsauhṛdāt ,
harṣaṃ tyaktvā punardīno grahagrasta ivoḍurāṭ.
17. iti evam uktaḥ sugrīvaḥ vālinā bhrātṛsauhṛdāt
harṣam tyaktvā punaḥ dīnaḥ grahagrastaḥ iva uḍurāṭ
17. vālinā bhrātṛsauhṛdāt iti evam uktaḥ sugrīvaḥ
harṣam tyaktvā punaḥ dīnaḥ uḍurāṭ grahagrastaḥ iva
17. Thus spoken to by Vālī out of brotherly affection, Sugriva, having abandoned his joy, again became dejected, like the moon (uḍurāṭ) seized by an eclipse.
तद्वालिवचनाच्छान्तः कुर्वन्युक्तमतन्द्रितः ।
जग्राह सो ऽभ्यनुज्ञातो मालां तां चैव काञ्चनीम् ॥१८॥
18. tadvālivacanācchāntaḥ kurvanyuktamatandritaḥ ,
jagrāha so'bhyanujñāto mālāṃ tāṃ caiva kāñcanīm.
18. tat vālivacanāt śāntaḥ kurvan yuktam atandritaḥ
jagrāha saḥ abhyanujñātaḥ mālām tām ca eva kāñcanīm
18. saḥ vālivacanāt śāntaḥ yuktam kurvan atandritaḥ
abhyanujñātaḥ ca eva tām kāñcanīm mālām jagrāha
18. Calmed by Vālī's words, and acting properly and vigilantly, he (Sugriva), having been permitted, indeed took that golden garland.
तां मालां काञ्चनीं दत्त्वा वाली दृष्ट्वात्मजं स्थितम् ।
संसिद्धः प्रेत्य भावाय स्नेहादङ्गदमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. tāṃ mālāṃ kāñcanīṃ dattvā vālī dṛṣṭvātmajaṃ sthitam ,
saṃsiddhaḥ pretya bhāvāya snehādaṅgadamabravīt.
19. tām mālām kāñcanīm dattvā vālī dṛṣṭvā ātmajam sthitam
saṃsiddhaḥ pretya bhāvāya snehāt aṅgadam abravīt
19. vālī tām kāñcanīm mālām dattvā sthitam ātmajam dṛṣṭvā
pretya bhāvāya saṃsiddhaḥ snehāt aṅgadam abravīt
19. Having given that golden garland, Vālī, seeing his son (ātmaja) Aṅgada standing there, and himself having become fully prepared for the afterlife (pretya bhāvāya saṃsiddhaḥ), spoke to Aṅgada out of affection.
देशकालौ भजस्वाद्य क्षममाणः प्रियाप्रिये ।
सुखदुःखसहः काले सुग्रीववशगो भव ॥२०॥
20. deśakālau bhajasvādya kṣamamāṇaḥ priyāpriye ,
sukhaduḥkhasahaḥ kāle sugrīvavaśago bhava.
20. deśakālau bhajasva adya kṣamamāṇaḥ priyāpriye
sukhaduḥkhasahaḥ kāle sugrīvavaśagaḥ bhava
20. adya deśakālau bhajasva priyāpriye kṣamamāṇaḥ
sukhaduḥkhasahaḥ kāle sugrīvavaśagaḥ bhava
20. Today, you should adapt yourself to the specific time and circumstances, patiently enduring both favorable and unfavorable experiences. Tolerant of happiness and sorrow, be obedient to Sugrīva when the time is right.
यथा हि त्वं महाबाहो लालितः सततं मया ।
न तथा वर्तमानं त्वां सुग्रीवो बहु मंस्यते ॥२१॥
21. yathā hi tvaṃ mahābāho lālitaḥ satataṃ mayā ,
na tathā vartamānaṃ tvāṃ sugrīvo bahu maṃsyate.
21. yathā hi tvaṃ mahābāho lālitaḥ satataṃ mayā na
tathā vartamānaṃ tvāṃ sugrīvaḥ bahu maṃsyate
21. mahābāho yathā hi tvaṃ mayā satataṃ lālitaḥ na
tathā vartamānaṃ tvāṃ sugrīvaḥ bahu maṃsyate
21. Indeed, O mighty-armed one, just as you have been constantly cherished by me, Sugrīva will not think highly of you behaving thus.
मास्यामित्रैर्गतं गच्छेर्मा शत्रुभिररिंदम ।
भर्तुरर्थपरो दान्तः सुग्रीववशगो भव ॥२२॥
22. māsyāmitrairgataṃ gacchermā śatrubhirariṃdama ,
bharturarthaparo dāntaḥ sugrīvavaśago bhava.
22. mā asya amitraiḥ gataṃ gaccheḥ mā śatrubhiḥ arimdama
bhartuḥ arthaparaḥ dāntaḥ sugrīvavaśagaḥ bhava
22. arimdama mā asya amitraiḥ gataṃ gaccheḥ mā śatrubhiḥ
bhartuḥ arthaparaḥ dāntaḥ sugrīvavaśagaḥ bhava
22. O destroyer of foes, do not associate with his enemies, nor with any other adversaries. You must be dedicated to your master's purpose, be self-controlled, and remain subservient to Sugrīva.
न चातिप्रणयः कार्यः कर्तव्यो ऽप्रणयश्च ते ।
उभयं हि महादोषं तस्मादन्तरदृग्भव ॥२३॥
23. na cātipraṇayaḥ kāryaḥ kartavyo'praṇayaśca te ,
ubhayaṃ hi mahādoṣaṃ tasmādantaradṛgbhava.
23. na ca atipraṇayaḥ kāryaḥ kartavyaḥ apraṇayaḥ ca
te ubhayaṃ hi mahādoṣaṃ tasmāt antaradṛk bhava
23. te ca atipraṇayaḥ na kāryaḥ ca apraṇayaḥ na
kartavyaḥ hi ubhayaṃ mahādoṣaṃ tasmāt antaradṛk bhava
23. Neither excessive familiarity should be shown by you, nor should a complete lack of familiarity be displayed. For both of these are indeed great flaws. Therefore, be discerning.
इत्युक्त्वाथ विवृत्ताक्षः शरसंपीडितो भृशम् ।
विवृतैर्दशनैर्भीमैर्बभूवोत्क्रान्तजीवितः ॥२४॥
24. ityuktvātha vivṛttākṣaḥ śarasaṃpīḍito bhṛśam ,
vivṛtairdaśanairbhīmairbabhūvotkrāntajīvitaḥ.
24. iti uktvā atha vivṛttākṣaḥ śarasaṃpīḍitaḥ bhṛśam
vivṛtaiḥ daśanaiḥ bhīmaiḥ babhūva utkrāntajīvitaḥ
24. iti uktvā atha śarasaṃpīḍitaḥ bhṛśam vivṛttākṣaḥ
bhīmaiḥ vivṛtaiḥ daśanaiḥ utkrāntajīvitaḥ babhūva
24. Having spoken thus, he (Valin), with eyes wide open, deeply afflicted by the arrows, and with dreadful, exposed teeth, then expired.
हते तु वीरे प्लवगाधिपे तदा प्लवंगमास्तत्र न शर्म लेभिरे ।
वनेचराः सिंहयुते महावने यथा हि गावो निहते गवां पतौ ॥२५॥
25. hate tu vīre plavagādhipe tadā plavaṃgamāstatra na śarma lebhire ,
vanecarāḥ siṃhayute mahāvane yathā hi gāvo nihate gavāṃ patau.
25. hate tu vīre plavagādhipe tadā
plavaṅgamāḥ tatra na śarma lebhire
vanecharāḥ siṃhayute mahāvane
yathā hi gāvaḥ nihate gavāṃ patau
25. tadā vīre plavagādhipe hate tu plavaṅgamāḥ tatra śarma na lebhire,
yathā hi gavāṃ patau nihate siṃhayute mahāvane vanecharāḥ gāvaḥ
25. When that brave lord of monkeys (Valin) was slain, the other monkeys there found no peace, just as forest-dwelling cows in a great lion-infested forest find no peace when their lord (bull) has been killed.
ततस्तु तारा व्यसनार्णव प्लुता मृतस्या भर्तुर्वदनं समीक्ष्य सा ।
जगाम भूमिं परिरभ्य वालिनं महाद्रुमं छिन्नमिवाश्रिता लता ॥२६॥
26. tatastu tārā vyasanārṇava plutā mṛtasyā bharturvadanaṃ samīkṣya sā ,
jagāma bhūmiṃ parirabhya vālinaṃ mahādrumaṃ chinnamivāśritā latā.
26. tataḥ tu tārā vyasanārṇavaplutā
mṛtasya bhartuḥ vadanaṃ samīkṣya sā
jagāma bhūmiṃ parirabhya vālinaṃ
mahādrumaṃ chinnaṃ iva āśritā latā
26. tataḥ tu vyasanārṇavaplutā sā tārā
mṛtasya bhartuḥ vadanaṃ samīkṣya
vālinaṃ parirabhya chinnaṃ
mahādrumaṃ āśritā latā iva bhūmiṃ jagāma
26. Then, Tara, submerged in an ocean of grief, beholding the face of her dead husband, fell to the ground, embracing Valin, like a creeper clinging to a great felled tree.
