खरं तु रामाभिमुखं प्रयान्तं वाहिनीपतिः ।
राक्षसस्त्रिशिरा नाम संनिपत्येदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. kharaṃ tu rāmābhimukhaṃ prayāntaṃ vāhinīpatiḥ ,

1. However, the demon general, Triśirā by name, encountering Khara who was proceeding towards Rama, spoke these words.
मां नियोजय विक्रान्त संनिवर्तस्व साहसात् ।
पश्य रामं महाबाहुं संयुगे विनिपातितम् ॥२॥
2. māṃ niyojaya vikrānta saṃnivartasva sāhasāt ,
paśya rāmaṃ mahābāhuṃ saṃyuge vinipātitam.
2. mām niyojaya vikrānta saṃnivartasva sāhasāt
paśya rāmam mahābāhum saṃyuge vinipātitam
2. vikrānta mām niyojaya sāhasāt saṃnivartasva
saṃyuge vinipātitam mahābāhum rāmam paśya
2. O valiant one, employ me! Retreat from this reckless action. Behold Rama, the mighty-armed, struck down in battle!
प्रतिजानामि ते सत्यमायुधं चाहमालभे ।
यथा रामं वधिष्यामि वधार्हं सर्वरक्षसाम् ॥३॥
3. pratijānāmi te satyamāyudhaṃ cāhamālabhe ,
yathā rāmaṃ vadhiṣyāmi vadhārhaṃ sarvarakṣasām.
3. pratijānāmi te satyam āyudham ca aham ālabhe
yathā rāmam vadhārham sarvarakṣasām vadhiṣyāmi
3. aham te satyam pratijānāmi ca āyudham ālabhe
yathā sarvarakṣasām vadhārham rāmam vadhiṣyāmi
3. I truly promise you, and I swear by touching my weapon, that I will slay Rama, who is deserving of death at the hands of all demons.
अहं वास्य रणे मृत्युरेष वा समरे मम ।
विनिवर्त्य रणोत्साहं मुहूर्तं प्राश्निको भव ॥४॥
4. ahaṃ vāsya raṇe mṛtyureṣa vā samare mama ,
vinivartya raṇotsāhaṃ muhūrtaṃ prāśniko bhava.
4. aham vā asya raṇe mṛtyuḥ eṣaḥ vā samare mama |
vinivartya raṇa-utsāham muhūrtam prāśnikaḥ bhava
4. aham vā asya raṇe mṛtyuḥ,
vā eṣaḥ samare mama [mṛtyuḥ] raṇa-utsāham vinivartya,
muhūrtam prāśnikaḥ bhava
4. Either I shall be his death in battle, or he shall be my death in combat. Abandon your enthusiasm for battle for a moment and become an impartial judge.
प्रहृष्टो वा हते रामे जनस्थानं प्रयास्यसि ।
मयि वा निहते रामं संयुगायोपयास्यसि ॥५॥
5. prahṛṣṭo vā hate rāme janasthānaṃ prayāsyasi ,
mayi vā nihate rāmaṃ saṃyugāyopayāsyasi.
5. prahrṛṣṭaḥ vā hate rāme janasthānam prayāsyasi
| mayi vā nihate rāmam saṃyugāya upayāsyasi
5. vā rāme hate,
[tvam] prahrṛṣṭaḥ janasthānam prayāsyasi vā mayi nihate,
[tvam] rāmam saṃyugāya upayāsyasi
5. Either, if Rāma is slain, you will joyfully return to Janasthāna, or, if I am slain, you will approach Rāma for battle.
खरस्त्रिशिरसा तेन मृत्युलोभात् प्रसादितः ।
गच्छ युध्येत्यनुज्ञातो राघवाभिमुखो ययौ ॥६॥
6. kharastriśirasā tena mṛtyulobhāt prasāditaḥ ,
gaccha yudhyetyanujñāto rāghavābhimukho yayau.
6. kharaḥ triśirasā tena mṛtyu-lobhāt prasāditaḥ |
gaccha yudhya iti anujñātaḥ rāghava-abhimukhaḥ yayau
6. kharaḥ tena triśirasā mṛtyu-lobhāt prasāditaḥ,
[ca] "gaccha yudhya" iti anujñātaḥ,
rāghava-abhimukhaḥ yayau
6. Khara, having been propitiated by that Triśiras out of greed for death (or for slaying), and authorized with the words 'Go and fight!', departed facing Rāghava.
त्रिशिराश्च रथेनैव वाजियुक्तेन भास्वता ।
अभ्यद्रवद् रणे रामं त्रिशृङ्ग इव पर्वतः ॥७॥
7. triśirāśca rathenaiva vājiyuktena bhāsvatā ,
abhyadravad raṇe rāmaṃ triśṛṅga iva parvataḥ.
7. triśirāḥ ca rathena eva vāji-yuktena bhāsvatā
| abhyadravat raṇe rāmam triśṛṅgaḥ iva parvataḥ
7. ca triśirāḥ,
vāji-yuktena bhāsvatā rathena eva,
raṇe rāmam abhyadravat,
triśṛṅgaḥ parvataḥ iva
7. And Triśiras, in his chariot yoked with horses and shining brightly, rushed towards Rāma in battle, like a three-peaked mountain.
शरधारा समूहान् स महामेघ इवोत्सृजन् ।
व्यसृजत् सदृशं नादं जलार्द्रस्येव दुन्दुभेः ॥८॥
8. śaradhārā samūhān sa mahāmegha ivotsṛjan ,
vyasṛjat sadṛśaṃ nādaṃ jalārdrasyeva dundubheḥ.
8. śaradhārāsamūhān sa mahāmeghaḥ iva utsṛjan
vyasṛjat sadṛśaṃ nādaṃ jalārdrāsya iva dundubheḥ
8. sa mahāmeghaḥ iva śaradhārāsamūhān utsṛjan
jalārdrāsya dundubheḥ iva sadṛśaṃ nādaṃ vyasṛjat
8. Releasing groups of arrow-streams like a great cloud, he emitted a sound similar to that of a water-laden war-drum.
आगच्छन्तं त्रिशिरसं राक्षसं प्रेक्ष्य राघवः ।
धनुषा प्रतिजग्राह विधुन्वन् सायकाञ् शितान् ॥९॥
9. āgacchantaṃ triśirasaṃ rākṣasaṃ prekṣya rāghavaḥ ,
dhanuṣā pratijagrāha vidhunvan sāyakāñ śitān.
9. āgacchantam triśirasaṃ rākṣasaṃ prekṣya rāghavaḥ
dhanuṣā pratijagrāha vidhunvan sāyakān śitān
9. rāghavaḥ āgacchantam triśirasaṃ rākṣasaṃ prekṣya
dhanuṣā śitān sāyakān vidhunvan pratijagrāha
9. Having seen the demon Triśiras approaching, Rāghava countered him with his bow, brandishing sharp arrows.
स संप्रहारस्तुमुलो राम त्रिशिरसोर्महान् ।
बभूवातीव बलिनोः सिंहकुञ्जरयोरिव ॥१०॥
10. sa saṃprahārastumulo rāma triśirasormahān ,
babhūvātīva balinoḥ siṃhakuñjarayoriva.
10. sa saṃprahāraḥ tumulaḥ rāma triśirasoḥ mahān
babhūva atīva balinoḥ siṃhakuñjarayoḥ iva
10. rāma triśirasoḥ sa mahān tumulaḥ saṃprahāraḥ
atīva balinoḥ siṃhakuñjarayoḥ iva babhūva
10. That great and furious combat between Rama and Triśiras was like a fight between two exceedingly powerful beings, a lion and an elephant.
ततस्त्रिशिरसा बाणैर्ललाटे ताडितस्त्रिभिः ।
अमर्षी कुपितो रामः संरब्धमिदमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. tatastriśirasā bāṇairlalāṭe tāḍitastribhiḥ ,
amarṣī kupito rāmaḥ saṃrabdhamidamabravīt.
11. tataḥ triśirasā bāṇaiḥ lalāṭe tāḍitaḥ tribhiḥ
amarṣī kupitaḥ rāmaḥ saṃrabdham idam abravīt
11. tataḥ triśirasā tribhiḥ bāṇaiḥ lalāṭe tāḍitaḥ
amarṣī kupitaḥ rāmaḥ saṃrabdham idam abravīt
11. Then, struck on the forehead by Triśiras with three arrows, the furious and enraged Rama spoke these words indignantly.
अहो विक्रमशूरस्य राक्षसस्येदृशं बलम् ।
पुष्पैरिव शरैर्यस्य ललाटे ऽस्मि परिक्षतः ।
ममापि प्रतिगृह्णीष्व शरांश्चापगुणच्युतान् ॥१२॥
12. aho vikramaśūrasya rākṣasasyedṛśaṃ balam ,
puṣpairiva śarairyasya lalāṭe'smi parikṣataḥ ,
mamāpi pratigṛhṇīṣva śarāṃścāpaguṇacyutān.
12. aho vikramaśūrasya rākṣasasya īdṛśam
balam puṣpaiḥ iva śaraiḥ yasya
lalāṭe asmi parikṣataḥ mama api
pratigṛhṇīṣva śarān ca cāpaguṇacyutān
12. aho vikramaśūrasya rākṣasasya īdṛśam
balam yasya śaraiḥ lalāṭe
puṣpaiḥ iva parikṣataḥ asmi mama api
cāpaguṇacyutān śarān pratigṛhṇīṣva
12. Oh, such is the strength of this valorous demon! I am pierced on my forehead by his arrows as if by mere flowers. Now, you too, receive these arrows released from my bowstring.
एवमुक्त्वा तु संरब्धः शरानाशीविषोपमान् ।
त्रिशिरो वक्षसि क्रुद्धो निजघान चतुर्दश ॥१३॥
13. evamuktvā tu saṃrabdhaḥ śarānāśīviṣopamān ,
triśiro vakṣasi kruddho nijaghāna caturdaśa.
13. evam uktvā tu saṃrabdhaḥ śarān āśīviṣopamān
triśirāḥ vakṣasi kruddhaḥ nijaghāna caturdaśa
13. triśirāḥ evam uktvā tu saṃrabdhaḥ kruddhaḥ
āśīviṣopamān caturdaśa śarān vakṣasi nijaghāna
13. Having spoken thus, Triśiras, enraged, furiously struck [him] on the chest with fourteen arrows resembling venomous snakes.
चतुर्भिस्तुरगानस्य शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
न्यपातयत तेजस्वी चतुरस्तस्य वाजिनः ॥१४॥
14. caturbhisturagānasya śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ,
nyapātayata tejasvī caturastasya vājinaḥ.
14. caturbhiḥ turagān asya śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ
nyapātayat tejasvī caturaḥ tasya vājinaḥ
14. tejasvī tasya caturaḥ vājinaḥ caturbhiḥ
saṃnataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ nyapātayat
14. The radiant one (Rama), with four well-formed arrows, felled his (Triśiras') four horses.
अष्टभिः सायकैः सूतं रथोपस्थे न्यपातयत् ।
रामश्चिच्छेद बाणेन ध्वजं चास्य समुच्छ्रितम् ॥१५॥
15. aṣṭabhiḥ sāyakaiḥ sūtaṃ rathopasthe nyapātayat ,
rāmaściccheda bāṇena dhvajaṃ cāsya samucchritam.
15. aṣṭabhiḥ sāyakaiḥ sūtam rathopasthe nyapātayat
rāmaḥ ciccheda bāṇena dhvajam ca asya samucchritam
15. rāmaḥ aṣṭabhiḥ sāyakaiḥ sūtam rathopasthe nyapātayat
ca bāṇena asya samucchritam dhvajam ciccheda
15. With eight arrows, (Rama) struck down the charioteer from the chariot's platform. And Rama severed his high-flying banner with an arrow.
ततो हतरथात्तस्मादुत्पतन्तं निशाचरम् ।
बिभेद रामस्तं बाणैर्हृदये सो ऽभवज्जडः ॥१६॥
16. tato hatarathāttasmādutpatantaṃ niśācaram ,
bibheda rāmastaṃ bāṇairhṛdaye so'bhavajjaḍaḥ.
16. tataḥ hata-rathāt tasmāt utpatantam niśācaram
bibheda rāmaḥ tam bāṇaiḥ hṛdaye saḥ abhavat jaḍaḥ
16. rāmaḥ tataḥ tasmāt hata-rathāt utpatantam tam
niśācaram bāṇaiḥ hṛdaye bibheda saḥ jaḍaḥ abhavat
16. Then, Rama pierced that night-stalker (niśācara), who was leaping up from his broken chariot, in the heart with arrows. The demon became motionless.
सायकैश्चाप्रमेयात्मा सामर्षस्तस्य रक्षसः ।
शिरांस्यपातयत्त्रीणि वेगवद्भिस्त्रिभिः शतैः ॥१७॥
17. sāyakaiścāprameyātmā sāmarṣastasya rakṣasaḥ ,
śirāṃsyapātayattrīṇi vegavadbhistribhiḥ śataiḥ.
17. sāyakaiḥ ca aprameya-ātmā sa-amarṣaḥ tasya rakṣasaḥ
śirāṃsi apātayat trīṇi vegavat-bhiḥ tribhiḥ śataiḥ
17. aprameya-ātmā sa-amarṣaḥ ca tasya rakṣasaḥ vegavat-bhiḥ
tribhiḥ śataiḥ sāyakaiḥ trīṇi śirāṃsi apātayat
17. And the immeasurable-souled (aprameyātman) Rama, filled with indignation, struck down three heads of that demon (rakṣas) with three hundred swift arrows.
स भूमौ शोणितोद्गारी रामबाणाभिपीडितः ।
न्यपतत् पतितैः पूर्वं स्वशिरोभिर्निशाचरः ॥१८॥
18. sa bhūmau śoṇitodgārī rāmabāṇābhipīḍitaḥ ,
nyapatat patitaiḥ pūrvaṃ svaśirobhirniśācaraḥ.
18. saḥ bhūmau śoṇita-udgārī rāma-bāṇa-abhipīḍitaḥ
nyapatat patitaiḥ pūrvam sva-śirobhiḥ niśācaraḥ
18. saḥ niśācaraḥ śoṇita-udgārī rāma-bāṇa-abhipīḍitaḥ
pūrvam patitaiḥ sva-śirobhiḥ bhūmau nyapatat
18. That night-stalker (niśācara), spouting blood and severely afflicted by Rama's arrows, fell to the ground, joining his own heads that had already fallen.
हतशेषास्ततो भग्ना राक्षसाः खरसंश्रयाः ।
द्रवन्ति स्म न तिष्ठन्ति व्याघ्रत्रस्ता मृगा इव ॥१९॥
19. hataśeṣāstato bhagnā rākṣasāḥ kharasaṃśrayāḥ ,
dravanti sma na tiṣṭhanti vyāghratrastā mṛgā iva.
19. hata-śeṣāḥ tataḥ bhagnāḥ rākṣasāḥ khara-saṃśrayāḥ
dravanti sma na tiṣṭhanti vyāghra-trastāḥ mṛgāḥ iva
19. tataḥ hata-śeṣāḥ bhagnāḥ khara-saṃśrayāḥ rākṣasāḥ
vyāghra-trastāḥ mṛgāḥ iva dravanti sma na tiṣṭhanti
19. Then, the remaining demons (rākṣasas), who had sought refuge with Khara and were now routed, fled without stopping, just like deer terrified by a tiger.
तान् खरो द्रवतो दृष्ट्वा निवर्त्य रुषितः स्वयम् ।
राममेवाभिदुद्राव राहुश्चन्द्रमसं यथा ॥२०॥
20. tān kharo dravato dṛṣṭvā nivartya ruṣitaḥ svayam ,
rāmamevābhidudrāva rāhuścandramasaṃ yathā.
20. tān kharaḥ dravataḥ dṛṣṭvā nivartya ruṣitaḥ svayam
rāmam eva abhidudrāva rāhuḥ candramasam yathā
20. kharaḥ dravataḥ tān dṛṣṭvā svayam ruṣitaḥ nivartya
rāmam eva abhidudrāva rāhuḥ candramasam yathā
20. Seeing those (demons) fleeing, Khara, enraged, himself turned back and charged directly at Rama, just as Rahu attacks the moon.
