स एवं ब्रुवतीं सीतां धर्मज्ञो धर्मवत्सलः ।
निवर्तनार्थे धर्मात्मा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. sa evaṃ bruvatīṃ sītāṃ dharmajño dharmavatsalaḥ ,
nivartanārthe dharmātmā vākyametaduvāca ha.

1. The noble-souled (dharmātman) Rama, who knew and was devoted to righteousness (dharma), then spoke this statement to Sita, who was speaking thus (insisting), for the purpose of her returning (home).
सीते महाकुलीनासि धर्मे च निरता सदा ।
इहाचर स्वधर्मं त्वं मा यथा मनसः सुखम् ॥२॥
2. sīte mahākulīnāsi dharme ca niratā sadā ,
ihācara svadharmaṃ tvaṃ mā yathā manasaḥ sukham.
2. sīte mahākulīnā asi dharme ca niratā sadā iha
ācara svadharmam tvam mā yathā manasaḥ sukham

tvam mahākulīnā asi,
ca sadā dharme niratā iha svadharmam ācara manasaḥ sukham yathā mā (ācara)
2. "O Sita, you are born of a noble family and are ever devoted to righteousness (dharma). Here (in Ayodhya), you should perform your own duty (svadharma), not according to what pleases your mind (manas)."
सीते यथा त्वां वक्ष्यामि तथा कार्यं त्वयाबले ।
वने दोषा हि बहवो वदतस्तान्निबोध मे ॥३॥
3. sīte yathā tvāṃ vakṣyāmi tathā kāryaṃ tvayābale ,
vane doṣā hi bahavo vadatastānnibodha me.

abale vane doṣā hi bahavaḥ vadatas tān nibodha me

3. "O Sita, just as I shall instruct you, so must it be done by you, O delicate one. For there are indeed many dangers in the forest; hear them from me as I speak."
सीते विमुच्यतामेषा वनवासकृता मतिः ।
बहुदोषं हि कान्तारं वनमित्यभिधीयते ॥४॥
4. sīte vimucyatāmeṣā vanavāsakṛtā matiḥ ,
bahudoṣaṃ hi kāntāraṃ vanamityabhidhīyate.
4. sīte vimucyatām eṣā vanavāsakṛtā matiḥ
bahudoṣam hi kāntāram vanam iti abhidhīyate
4. sīte eṣā vanavāsakṛtā matiḥ vimucyatām hi
kāntāram bahudoṣam vanam iti abhidhīyate
4. O Sītā, abandon this resolve (mati) to dwell in the forest. For the wilderness (kāntāra) is indeed said to be a forest (vana) with many dangers (doṣa).
हितबुद्ध्या खलु वचो मयैतदभिधीयते ।
सदा सुखं न जानामि दुःखमेव सदा वनम् ॥५॥
5. hitabuddhyā khalu vaco mayaitadabhidhīyate ,
sadā sukhaṃ na jānāmi duḥkhameva sadā vanam.
5. hitabuddhyā khalu vacaḥ mayā etat abhidhīyate
sadā sukham na jānāmi duḥkham eva sadā vanam
5. khalu etat vacaḥ mayā hitabuddhyā abhidhīyate
sadā sukham na jānāmi vanam sadā duḥkham eva
5. Indeed, this statement (vacaḥ) is spoken by me with benevolent intention (hitabuddhi). I know no happiness there ever; the forest (vana) is always only suffering (duḥkha).
गिरिनिर्झरसंभूता गिरिकन्दरवासिनाम् ।
सिंहानां निनदा दुःखाः श्रोतुं दुःखमतो वनम् ॥६॥
6. girinirjharasaṃbhūtā girikandaravāsinām ,
siṃhānāṃ ninadā duḥkhāḥ śrotuṃ duḥkhamato vanam.
6. girinirjharasaṃbhūtāḥ girikandaravāsinām siṃhānām
ninadāḥ duḥkhāḥ śrotum duḥkham ataḥ vanam
6. girinirjharasaṃbhūtāḥ ninadāḥ girikandaravāsinām
siṃhānām duḥkhāḥ śrotum ataḥ vanam duḥkham
6. The sounds (ninada) produced by mountain springs and the roars of lions dwelling in mountain caves (girikandaravāsinām) are painful to hear. Therefore, the forest (vana) is a source of misery (duḥkha).
सुप्यते पर्णशय्यासु स्वयं भग्नासु भूतले ।
रात्रिषु श्रमखिन्नेन तस्माद्दुःखतरं वनम् ॥७॥
7. supyate parṇaśayyāsu svayaṃ bhagnāsu bhūtale ,
rātriṣu śramakhinnena tasmādduḥkhataraṃ vanam.

rātriṣu śramakhinnena tasmāt duḥkhataram vanam

7. One sleeps on beds of leaves, gathered personally on the bare ground, during nights when one is weary from exertion (śrama). Therefore, the forest (vana) is even more miserable (duḥkhataram).
उपवासश्च कर्तव्या यथाप्राणेन मैथिलि ।
जटाभारश्च कर्तव्यो वल्कलाम्बरधारिणा ॥८॥
8. upavāsaśca kartavyā yathāprāṇena maithili ,
jaṭābhāraśca kartavyo valkalāmbaradhāriṇā.
8. upavāsaḥ ca kartavyā yathāprāṇena maithili
jaṭābhāraḥ ca kartavyaḥ valkalāmbaradhāriṇā
8. maithili yathāprāṇena upavāsaḥ ca kartavyā
valkalāmbaradhāriṇā jaṭābhāraḥ ca kartavyaḥ
8. And, O Maithili, one must undertake fasting according to one's strength. Also, one who wears garments of bark must bear matted hair.
अतीव वातस्तिमिरं बुभुक्षा चात्र नित्यशः ।
भयानि च महान्त्यत्र ततो दुःखतरं वनम् ॥९॥
9. atīva vātastimiraṃ bubhukṣā cātra nityaśaḥ ,
bhayāni ca mahāntyatra tato duḥkhataraṃ vanam.
9. atīva vātaḥ timiram bubhukṣā ca atra nityaśaḥ
bhayāni ca mahānti atra tataḥ duḥkhataram vanam
9. atra atīva vātaḥ timiram bubhukṣā ca nityaśaḥ
atra mahānti bhayāni ca tataḥ vanam duḥkhataram
9. Here, there are always extreme winds, profound darkness, and constant hunger. Also, great dangers are present here. For these reasons, the forest is a place of greater misery.
सरीसृपाश्च बहवो बहुरूपाश्च भामिनि ।
चरन्ति पृथिवीं दर्पादतो दुखतरं वनम् ॥१०॥
10. sarīsṛpāśca bahavo bahurūpāśca bhāmini ,
caranti pṛthivīṃ darpādato dukhataraṃ vanam.
10. sarīsṛpāḥ ca bahavaḥ bahurūpāḥ ca bhāmini
caranti pṛthivīm darpāt ataḥ duḥkhataram vanam
10. bhāmini bahavaḥ bahurūpāḥ ca sarīsṛpāḥ ca
darpāt pṛthivīm caranti ataḥ vanam duḥkhataram
10. And, O beautiful one, many reptiles of various forms roam the earth boldly and arrogantly. For this reason, the forest is a place of greater misery.
नदीनिलयनाः सर्पा नदीकुटिलगामिनः ।
तिष्ठन्त्यावृत्य पन्थानमतो दुःखतरं वनम् ॥११॥
11. nadīnilayanāḥ sarpā nadīkuṭilagāminaḥ ,
tiṣṭhantyāvṛtya panthānamato duḥkhataraṃ vanam.
11. nadīnilayanāḥ sarpāḥ nadīkuṭilagāminaḥ tiṣṭhanti
āvṛtya panthānam ataḥ duḥkhataram vanam
11. nadīnilayanāḥ nadīkuṭilagāminaḥ sarpāḥ panthānam
āvṛtya tiṣṭhanti ataḥ vanam duḥkhataram
11. Snakes that dwell in rivers and move with a winding gait like rivers obstruct the paths. For this reason, the forest is a place of greater misery.
पतंगा वृश्चिकाः कीटा दंशाश्च मशकैः सह ।
बाधन्ते नित्यमबले सर्वं दुःखमतो वनम् ॥१२॥
12. pataṃgā vṛścikāḥ kīṭā daṃśāśca maśakaiḥ saha ,
bādhante nityamabale sarvaṃ duḥkhamato vanam.
12. pataṅgāḥ vṛścikāḥ kīṭāḥ daṃśāḥ ca maśakaiḥ saha
bādhante nityam abale sarvam duḥkham ataḥ vanam
12. abale pataṅgāḥ vṛścikāḥ kīṭāḥ ca daṃśāḥ maśakaiḥ
saha nityam bādhante ataḥ vanam sarvam duḥkham
12. O weak woman, moths, scorpions, insects, and biting gnats, along with mosquitoes, constantly torment (one). Therefore, the forest is full of all kinds of suffering.
द्रुमाः कण्टकिनश्चैव कुशकाशाश्च भामिनि ।
वने व्याकुलशाखाग्रास्तेन दुःखतरं वनम् ॥१३॥
13. drumāḥ kaṇṭakinaścaiva kuśakāśāśca bhāmini ,
vane vyākulaśākhāgrāstena duḥkhataraṃ vanam.
13. drumāḥ kaṇṭakinaḥ ca eva kuśakāśāḥ ca bhāmini
vane vyākulaśākhāgrāḥ tena duḥkhataram vanam
13. bhāmini drumāḥ kaṇṭakinaḥ ca eva kuśakāśāḥ ca
vane vyākulaśākhāgrāḥ tena vanam duḥkhataram
13. O beautiful woman, the trees are thorny, and there are kuśa and kāśa grasses (in the forest). In the forest, the tips of their branches are tangled. For this reason, the forest is even more miserable.
तदलं ते वनं गत्वा क्षमं न हि वनं तव ।
विमृशन्निह पश्यामि बहुदोषतरं वनम् ॥१४॥
14. tadalaṃ te vanaṃ gatvā kṣamaṃ na hi vanaṃ tava ,
vimṛśanniha paśyāmi bahudoṣataraṃ vanam.
14. tat alam te vanam gatvā kṣamam na hi vanam
tava vimṛśan iha paśyāmi bahudoṣataram vanam
14. tat te vanam gatvā alam hi vanam tava na kṣamam
iha vimṛśan (aham) vanam bahudoṣataram paśyāmi
14. Therefore, there is no need for you to go to the forest. Indeed, the forest is not suitable for you. Reflecting on this here, I see the forest as having many more faults.
वनं तु नेतुं न कृता मतिस्तदा बभूव रामेण यदा महात्मना ।
न तस्य सीता वचनं चकार तत्ततो ऽब्रवीद् राममिदं सुदुःखिता ॥१५॥
15. vanaṃ tu netuṃ na kṛtā matistadā babhūva rāmeṇa yadā mahātmanā ,
na tasya sītā vacanaṃ cakāra tattato'bravīd rāmamidaṃ suduḥkhitā.
15. vanam tu netum na kṛtā matiḥ tadā
babhūva rāmeṇa yadā mahātmanā na
tasya sītā vacanam cakāra tat
tataḥ abravīt rāmam idam suduḥkhitā
15. yadā mahātmanā rāmeṇa vanam netum
matiḥ tadā na kṛtā babhūva tu sītā
tasya vacanam na cakāra tataḥ
suduḥkhitā idam rāmam abravīt tat
15. But then, when the great-souled (mahātman) Rama had not made the intention to take (her) to the forest, Sita did not heed his words. Thereupon, deeply distressed, she said this to Rama.
