तां तु पार्श्वे स्थितां प्रह्वां रामः संप्रेक्ष्य मैथिलीम् ।
हृदयान्तर्गतक्रोधो व्याहर्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥१॥
1. tāṃ tu pārśve sthitāṃ prahvāṃ rāmaḥ saṃprekṣya maithilīm ,

1. But Rama, having carefully observed Maithili (Sita) standing humbly at his side, and with anger held within his heart, began to speak.
एषासि निर्जिता भद्रे शत्रुं जित्वा मया रणे ।
पौरुषाद् यदनुष्ठेयं तदेतदुपपादितम् ॥२॥
2. eṣāsi nirjitā bhadre śatruṃ jitvā mayā raṇe ,
pauruṣād yadanuṣṭheyaṃ tadetadupapāditam.
2. eṣā asi nirjitā bhadre śatrum jitvā mayā raṇe
paurūṣāt yat anuṣṭheyam tat etat upapāditam
2. bhadre eṣā mayā raṇe śatrum jitvā nirjitā asi
yat paurūṣāt anuṣṭheyam tat etat upapāditam
2. O auspicious one, you are now fully conquered by me, who defeated the enemy in battle. That which was to be done through valor, this has been accomplished.
गतो ऽस्म्यन्तममर्षस्य धर्षणा संप्रमार्जिता ।
अवमानश्च शत्रुश्च मया युगपदुद्धृतौ ॥३॥
3. gato'smyantamamarṣasya dharṣaṇā saṃpramārjitā ,
avamānaśca śatruśca mayā yugapaduddhṛtau.
3. gataḥ asmi antam amarṣasya dharṣaṇā sampramārjitā
avamānaḥ ca śatruḥ ca mayā yugapat uddhṛtau
3. amarṣasya antam gataḥ asmi dharṣaṇā sampramārjitā
mayā yugapat avamānaḥ ca śatruḥ ca uddhṛtau
3. I have reached the end of my indignation; the affront has been completely wiped away. Both the humiliation and the enemy were simultaneously uprooted by me.
अद्य मे पौरुषं दृष्टमद्य मे सफलः श्रमः ।
अद्य तीर्णप्रतिज्ञत्वात् प्रभवामीह चात्मनः ॥४॥
4. adya me pauruṣaṃ dṛṣṭamadya me saphalaḥ śramaḥ ,
adya tīrṇapratijñatvāt prabhavāmīha cātmanaḥ.
4. adya me pauruṣam dṛṣṭam adya me saphalaḥ śramaḥ
adya tīrṇapratijñatvāt prabhavāmi iha ca ātmanaḥ
4. Today my valor has been demonstrated, and today my effort has been successful. Today, by fulfilling my pledge, I am capable of (controlling) myself here.
या त्वं विरहिता नीता चलचित्तेन रक्षसा ।
दैवसंपादितो दोषो मानुषेण मया जितः ॥५॥
5. yā tvaṃ virahitā nītā calacittena rakṣasā ,
daivasaṃpādito doṣo mānuṣeṇa mayā jitaḥ.
5. yā tvam virahitā nītā calacittena rakṣasā
daivasaṃpāditaḥ doṣaḥ mānuṣeṇa mayā jitaḥ
5. You, who were carried away, separated (from me) by a fickle-minded demon, that misfortune, which was brought about by destiny, has been conquered by me, a human.
संप्राप्तमवमानं यस्तेजसा न प्रमार्जति ।
कस्तस्य पुरुषार्थो ऽस्ति पुरुषस्याल्पतेजसः ॥६॥
6. saṃprāptamavamānaṃ yastejasā na pramārjati ,
kastasya puruṣārtho'sti puruṣasyālpatejasaḥ.
6. saṃprāptam avamānam yaḥ tejasā na pramārjati
kaḥ tasya puruṣārthaḥ asti puruṣasya alpatejasaḥ
6. What human endeavor (puruṣārtha) exists for that man of little power who does not wipe away an incurred insult with his own might?
लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्य लङ्कायाश्चावमर्दनम् ।
सफलं तस्य तच्छ्लाघ्यमद्य कर्म हनूमतः ॥७॥
7. laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya laṅkāyāścāvamardanam ,
saphalaṃ tasya tacchlāghyamadya karma hanūmataḥ.
7. laṅghanam ca samudrasya laṅkāyāḥ ca avamardanam
saphalam tasya tat ślāghyam adya karma hanūmataḥ
7. And the crossing of the ocean, and the destruction of Laṅkā – that commendable action (karma) of Hanūmān is successful today.
युद्धे विक्रमतश्चैव हितं मन्त्रयतश्च मे ।
सुग्रीवस्य ससैन्यस्य सफलो ऽद्य परिश्रमः ॥८॥
8. yuddhe vikramataścaiva hitaṃ mantrayataśca me ,
sugrīvasya sasainyasya saphalo'dya pariśramaḥ.
8. yuddhe vikramataḥ ca eva hitam mantrayataḥ ca me
sugrīvasya sasainyasya saphalaḥ adya pariśramaḥ
8. sugrīvasya sasainyasya me yuddhe vikramataḥ ca
hitam mantrayataḥ ca pariśramaḥ adya saphalaḥ eva
8. Today, the efforts of Sugriva, along with his army, have become fruitful, both in his valiant fighting and his beneficial counsel to me.
निर्गुणं भ्रातरं त्यक्त्वा यो मां स्वयमुपस्थितः ।
विभीषणस्य भक्तस्य सफलो ऽद्य परिश्रमः ॥९॥
9. nirguṇaṃ bhrātaraṃ tyaktvā yo māṃ svayamupasthitaḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇasya bhaktasya saphalo'dya pariśramaḥ.
9. nirguṇam bhrātaram tyaktvā yaḥ mām svayam upasthitaḥ
vibhīṣaṇasya bhaktasya saphalaḥ adya pariśramaḥ
9. yaḥ nirguṇam bhrātaram tyaktvā mām svayam upasthitaḥ
bhaktasya vibhīṣaṇasya pariśramaḥ adya saphalaḥ
9. Today, the efforts of devoted (bhakta) Vibhishana are fruitful, as he personally came to me, abandoning his brother who lacked good qualities.
इत्येवं ब्रुवतस्तस्य सीता रामस्य तद्वचः ।
मृगीवोत्फुल्लनयना बभूवाश्रुपरिप्लुता ॥१०॥
10. ityevaṃ bruvatastasya sītā rāmasya tadvacaḥ ,
mṛgīvotphullanayanā babhūvāśrupariplutā.
10. iti evam bruvataḥ tasya sītā rāmasya tat vacaḥ
mṛgī iva utphullanayanā babhūva aśrupariplutā
10. rāmasya tat evam bruvataḥ vacaḥ sītā mṛgī
iva utphullanayanā aśrupariplutā babhūva iti
10. As Rama spoke thus, Sita, upon hearing his words, became flooded with tears, her eyes wide open like those of a doe.
पश्यतस्तां तु रामस्य भूयः क्रोधो ऽभ्यवर्तत ।
प्रभूताज्यावसिक्तस्य पावकस्येव दीप्यतः ॥११॥
11. paśyatastāṃ tu rāmasya bhūyaḥ krodho'bhyavartata ,
prabhūtājyāvasiktasya pāvakasyeva dīpyataḥ.
11. paśyataḥ tām tu rāmasya bhūyaḥ krodhaḥ abhyavartata
prabhūtājyāvasiktasya pāvakasya iva dīpyataḥ
11. tu tām paśyataḥ rāmasya krodhaḥ bhūyaḥ abhyavartata
prabhūtājyāvasiktasya dīpyataḥ pāvakasya iva
11. But to Rama, as he saw her, anger again surged, just like a fire (pāvaka) blazing brighter when abundant clarified butter (ājya) is poured upon it.
स बद्ध्वा भ्रुकुटिं वक्त्रे तिर्यक्प्रेक्षितलोचनः ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं सीतां मध्ये वानररक्षसाम् ॥१२॥
12. sa baddhvā bhrukuṭiṃ vaktre tiryakprekṣitalocanaḥ ,
abravīt paruṣaṃ sītāṃ madhye vānararakṣasām.
12. sa baddhvā bhrukuṭim vaktre tiryagprekṣitalocanaḥ
abravīt paruṣam sītām madhye vānarakṣasām
12. sa vaktre bhrukuṭim baddhvā tiryagprekṣitalocanaḥ
vānarakṣasām madhye sītām paruṣam abravīt
12. He, knitting a frown on his face and with sideways-glancing eyes, spoke harshly to Sītā in the midst of the monkeys and rākṣasas.
यत् कर्तव्यं मनुष्येण धर्षणां परिमार्जता ।
तत् कृतं सकलं सीते शत्रुहस्तादमर्षणात् ॥१३॥
13. yat kartavyaṃ manuṣyeṇa dharṣaṇāṃ parimārjatā ,
tat kṛtaṃ sakalaṃ sīte śatruhastādamarṣaṇāt.
13. yat kartavyam manuṣyeṇa dharṣaṇām parimārjatā
tat kṛtam sakalam sīte śatruhastāt amarṣaṇāt
13. sīte dharṣaṇām parimārjatā manuṣyeṇa yat
kartavyam tat sakalam śatruhastāt amarṣaṇāt kṛtam
13. O Sītā, whatever must be done by a man seeking to wipe away an insult, that entire task has been accomplished, driven by indignation against the enemy.
निर्जिता जीवलोकस्य तपसा भावितात्मना ।
अगस्त्येन दुराधर्षा मुनिना दक्षिणेव दिक् ॥१४॥
14. nirjitā jīvalokasya tapasā bhāvitātmanā ,
agastyena durādharṣā muninā dakṣiṇeva dik.
14. nirjitā jīvalokasya tapasā bhāvitātmanā
agastyena durādharṣā muninā dakṣiṇā iva dik
14. jīvalokasya durādharṣā dakṣiṇā dik tapasā
bhāvitātmanā muninā agastyena nirjitā iva
14. Just as the southern direction, unconquerable for living beings, was subdued by the sage (muni) Agastya, whose inner self (ātman) was purified through severe austerity (tapas).
विदितश्चास्तु भद्रं ते यो ऽयं रणपरिश्रमः ।
स तीर्णः सुहृदां वीर्यान्न त्वदर्थं मया कृतः ॥१५॥
15. viditaścāstu bhadraṃ te yo'yaṃ raṇapariśramaḥ ,
sa tīrṇaḥ suhṛdāṃ vīryānna tvadarthaṃ mayā kṛtaḥ.
15. viditaḥ ca astu bhadram te yaḥ ayam raṇapariśramaḥ
saḥ tīrṇaḥ suhṛdām vīryāt na tvadartham mayā kṛtaḥ
15. te bhadram ca astu yaḥ ayam raṇapariśramaḥ saḥ suhṛdām
vīryāt tīrṇaḥ mayā tvadartham na kṛtaḥ viditaḥ astu
15. And let it be known to you – may good fortune be with you – that this arduous effort in battle, which was accomplished through the valor of my friends, was not undertaken by me for your sake.
रक्षता तु मया वृत्तमपवादं च सर्वशः ।
प्रख्यातस्यात्मवंशस्य न्यङ्गं च परिमार्जता ॥१६॥
16. rakṣatā tu mayā vṛttamapavādaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ,
prakhyātasyātmavaṃśasya nyaṅgaṃ ca parimārjatā.
16. rakṣatā tu mayā vṛttam apavādam ca sarvaśaḥ |
prakhyātasy ātmavaṃśasya nyaṅgam ca parimārjatā
16. mayā tu vṛttam ca apavādam sarvaśaḥ rakṣatā
prakhyātasy ātmavaṃśasya nyaṅgam ca parimārjatā
16. I acted, protecting my character and entirely removing any blame, while also wiping away the disgrace from my renowned ancestral lineage.
प्राप्तचारित्रसंदेहा मम प्रतिमुखे स्थिता ।
दीपो नेत्रातुरस्येव प्रतिकूलासि मे दृढम् ॥१७॥
17. prāptacāritrasaṃdehā mama pratimukhe sthitā ,
dīpo netrāturasyeva pratikūlāsi me dṛḍham.
17. prāptacāritrasaṃdehā mama pratimukhe sthitā |
dīpaḥ netrāturasya iva pratikūlā asi me dṛḍham
17. prāptacāritrasaṃdehā mama pratimukhe sthitā tvam
me netrāturasya dīpaḥ iva dṛḍham pratikūlā asi
17. You, who have incurred suspicion regarding your character, stand before me. You are profoundly disagreeable to me, like a lamp to one suffering from an eye ailment.
तद्गच्छ ह्यभ्यनुज्ञाता यतेष्टं जनकात्मजे ।
एता दश दिशो भद्रे कार्यमस्ति न मे त्वया ॥१८॥
18. tadgaccha hyabhyanujñātā yateṣṭaṃ janakātmaje ,
etā daśa diśo bhadre kāryamasti na me tvayā.
18. tat gaccha hi abhyanujñātā yata iṣṭam janakātmaje
| etāḥ daśa diśaḥ bhadre kāryam asti na me tvayā
18. janakātmaje bhadre,
tat hi (tvam) abhyanujñātā yata iṣṭam gaccha etāḥ daśa diśaḥ (santi) me tvayā kāryam na asti
18. Therefore, go now, as you are permitted, wherever you wish, O daughter of Janaka. These ten directions are open to you, O auspicious lady; I have no more need of you.
कः पुमान् हि कुले जातः स्त्रियं परगृहोषिताम् ।
तेजस्वि पुनरादद्यात् सुहृल्लेखेन चेतसा ॥१९॥
19. kaḥ pumān hi kule jātaḥ striyaṃ paragṛhoṣitām ,
tejasvi punarādadyāt suhṛllekhena cetasā.
19. kaḥ pumān hi kule jātaḥ striyam paragṛhoṣitām
| tejasvi punaḥ ādadhyāt suhṛllekhena cetasā
19. hi,
kule jātaḥ kaḥ pumān paragṛhoṣitām striyam tejasvi punaḥ suhṛllekhena cetasā ādadhyāt?
19. What man, indeed, born into a noble family, would spiritedly take back a woman who has resided in another's house, even with a mind full of affection?
रावणाङ्कपरिभ्रष्टां दृष्टां दुष्टेन चक्षुषा ।
कथं त्वां पुनरादद्यां कुलं व्यपदिशन्महत् ॥२०॥
20. rāvaṇāṅkaparibhraṣṭāṃ dṛṣṭāṃ duṣṭena cakṣuṣā ,
kathaṃ tvāṃ punarādadyāṃ kulaṃ vyapadiśanmahat.
20. rāvaṇāṅkaparibhraṣṭām dṛṣṭām duṣṭena cakṣuṣā
katham tvām punaḥ ādadyām kulam vyapadiśan mahat
20. How can I take you back, having fallen from Rāvaṇa's lap and been gazed upon by wicked eyes, while upholding my great lineage?
तदर्थं निर्जिता मे त्वं यशः प्रत्याहृतं मया ।
नास्ति मे त्वय्यभिष्वङ्गो यथेष्टं गम्यतामितः ॥२१॥
21. tadarthaṃ nirjitā me tvaṃ yaśaḥ pratyāhṛtaṃ mayā ,
nāsti me tvayyabhiṣvaṅgo yatheṣṭaṃ gamyatāmitaḥ.
21. tat artham nirjitā me tvam yaśaḥ pratyāhṛtam mayā na
asti me tvayi abhiṣvaṅgaḥ yathā iṣṭam gamyatām itaḥ
21. It was for that purpose that you were conquered by me, and my honor was restored. I have no attachment to you; you may go wherever you wish from here.
इति प्रव्याहृतं भद्रे मयैतत् कृतबुद्धिना ।
लक्ष्मणे भरते वा त्वं कुरु बुद्धिं यथासुखम् ॥२२॥
22. iti pravyāhṛtaṃ bhadre mayaitat kṛtabuddhinā ,
lakṣmaṇe bharate vā tvaṃ kuru buddhiṃ yathāsukham.
22. iti pravyāhṛtam bhadre mayā etat kṛtabuddhinā
lakṣmaṇe bharate vā tvam kuru buddhim yathāsukham
22. O noble lady, this has been declared by me, for I have made up my mind. Direct your thoughts towards Lakṣmaṇa or Bharata, as you wish.
सुग्रीवे वानरेन्द्रे वा राक्षसेन्द्रे विभीषणे ।
निवेशय मनः सीते यथा वा सुखमात्मनः ॥२३॥
23. sugrīve vānarendre vā rākṣasendre vibhīṣaṇe ,
niveśaya manaḥ sīte yathā vā sukhamātmanaḥ.
23. sugrīve vānarèndre vā rākṣasèndre vibhīṣaṇe
niveśaya manaḥ sīte yathā vā sukham ātmanaḥ
23. O Sītā, fix your mind on Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, or on Vibhīṣaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, or indeed, as your own happiness (sukham) dictates.
न हि त्वां रावणो दृष्ट्वा दिव्यरूपां मनोरमाम् ।
मर्षयते चिरं सीते स्वगृहे परिवर्तिनीम् ॥२४॥
24. na hi tvāṃ rāvaṇo dṛṣṭvā divyarūpāṃ manoramām ,
marṣayate ciraṃ sīte svagṛhe parivartinīm.
24. na hi tvām rāvaṇaḥ dṛṣṭvā divyarūpām manoramām
marṣayate ciram sīte svagṛhe parivartinīm
24. hi sīte rāvaṇaḥ tvām divyarūpām manoramām
svagṛhe parivartinīm dṛṣṭvā ciram na marṣayate
24. Indeed, Sītā, having seen you, who possess a divine and captivating form, Rāvaṇa will certainly not tolerate you for long while you are residing in his own house.
ततः प्रियार्हश्वरणा तदप्रियं प्रियादुपश्रुत्य चिरस्य मैथिली ।
मुमोच बाष्पं सुभृशं प्रवेपिता गजेन्द्रहस्ताभिहतेव वल्लरी ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ priyārhaśvaraṇā tadapriyaṃ priyādupaśrutya cirasya maithilī ,
mumoca bāṣpaṃ subhṛśaṃ pravepitā gajendrahastābhihateva vallarī.
25. tataḥ priyārha-caraṇā tat-apriyam
priyāt upaśrutya cirasya maithilī
mumoca bāṣpam subhṛśam pravepitā
gajendra-hasta-abhihatā iva vallarī
25. tataḥ cirasya maithilī priyārha-caraṇā
priyāt tat-apriyam upaśrutya
pravepitā gajendra-hasta-abhihatā
iva vallarī subhṛśam bāṣpam mumoca
25. Then, Maithilī, whose feet were worthy of honor, having heard that unpleasant news from her beloved after a long time, shed copious tears, trembling intensely like a creeper struck by the trunk of a mighty elephant.
