एवं तु क्रुद्धया राजा राममात्रा सशोकया ।
श्रावितः परुषं वाक्यं चिन्तयामास दुःखितः ॥१॥
1. evaṃ tu kruddhayā rājā rāmamātrā saśokayā ,
śrāvitaḥ paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ cintayāmāsa duḥkhitaḥ.

1. Thus, the king, distressed, pondered the harsh words that he had been made to hear by Rama's mother, who was angry and sorrowful.
तस्य चिन्तयमानस्य प्रत्यभात् कर्म दुष्कृतम् ।
यदनेन कृतं पूर्वमज्ञानाच्छब्दवेधिना ॥२॥
2. tasya cintayamānasya pratyabhāt karma duṣkṛtam ,
yadanena kṛtaṃ pūrvamajñānācchabdavedhinā.
2. tasya cintayamānasya pratyabhāt karma duṣkṛtam
yat anena kṛtam pūrvam ajñānāt śabdavedhinā
2. cintayamānasya tasya duṣkṛtam karma pratyabhāt

2. As he pondered, his evil deed (karma) became clear to him – that which he had committed earlier out of ignorance, he who could strike by sound (śabdavedhin).
अमनास्तेन शोकेन रामशोकेन च प्रभुः ।
दह्यमानस्तु शोकाभ्यां कौसल्यामाह भूपतिः ॥३॥
3. amanāstena śokena rāmaśokena ca prabhuḥ ,
dahyamānastu śokābhyāṃ kausalyāmāha bhūpatiḥ.
3. amanaḥ tena śokena rāmaśokena ca prabhuḥ
dahyamānaḥ tu śokābhyām kausalyām āha bhūpatiḥ
3. bhūpatiḥ prabhuḥ tena śokena rāmaśokena ca

3. The king, bewildered by that grief (due to his promise) and by grief for Rama, being consumed by these two sorrows, spoke to Kausalyā.
प्रसादये त्वां कौसल्ये रचितो ऽयं मयाञ्जलिः ।
वत्सला चानृशंसा च त्वं हि नित्यं परेष्वपि ॥४॥
4. prasādaye tvāṃ kausalye racito'yaṃ mayāñjaliḥ ,
vatsalā cānṛśaṃsā ca tvaṃ hi nityaṃ pareṣvapi.
4. prasādaye tvām kausalye racitaḥ ayam mayā añjaliḥ
vatsalā ca anṛśaṃsā ca tvam hi nityam pareṣu api
4. kausalye tvām prasādaye ayam añjaliḥ mayā racitaḥ
hi tvam nityam vatsalā ca anṛśaṃsā ca pareṣu api
4. Kausalyā, I beg for your favor; this respectful gesture (añjali) has been made by me. For you are always affectionate and kind, even towards others.
भर्ता तु खलु नारीणां गुणवान्निर्गुणो ऽपि वा ।
धर्मं विमृशमानानां प्रत्यक्षं देवि दैवतम् ॥५॥
5. bhartā tu khalu nārīṇāṃ guṇavānnirguṇo'pi vā ,
dharmaṃ vimṛśamānānāṃ pratyakṣaṃ devi daivatam.
5. bhartā tu khalu nārīṇām guṇavān nirguṇaḥ api vā
dharmam vimṛśamānānām pratyakṣam devi daivatam
5. devi tu khalu dharmam vimṛśamānānām nārīṇām bhartā
guṇavān vā nirguṇaḥ api pratyakṣam daivatam
5. Indeed, for women who contemplate their intrinsic nature (dharma), a husband, whether he possesses virtues or not, is a visible deity, O Goddess.
सा त्वं धर्मपरा नित्यं दृष्टलोकपरावर ।
नार्हसे विप्रियं वक्तुं दुःखितापि सुदुःखितम् ॥६॥
6. sā tvaṃ dharmaparā nityaṃ dṛṣṭalokaparāvara ,
nārhase vipriyaṃ vaktuṃ duḥkhitāpi suduḥkhitam.
6. sā tvam dharmaparā nityam dṛṣṭalokāparāvarā na
arhase vipriyam vaktum duḥkhitā api suduḥkhitam
6. sā tvam nityam dharmaparā dṛṣṭalokāparāvarā
duḥkhitā api suduḥkhitam vipriyam vaktum na arhase
6. You, who are always devoted to your intrinsic nature (dharma) and have seen both this world and the next, should not speak harsh words, even though you are deeply grieved.
तद्वाक्यं करुणं राज्ञः श्रुत्वा दीनस्य भाषितम् ।
कौसल्या व्यसृजद्बाष्पं प्रणालीव नवोदकम् ॥७॥
7. tadvākyaṃ karuṇaṃ rājñaḥ śrutvā dīnasya bhāṣitam ,
kausalyā vyasṛjadbāṣpaṃ praṇālīva navodakam.
7. tat vākyam karuṇam rājñaḥ śrutvā dīnasya bhāṣitam
kausalyā vyasṛjat bāṣpam praṇālī iva nava udakam
7. kausalyā śrutvā tat karuṇam bhāṣitam dīnasya
rājñaḥ vyasṛjat bāṣpam iva praṇālī nava udakam
7. Hearing those pitiable words spoken by the distressed king, Kausalya shed tears like a channel pouring forth fresh water.
स मूद्र्ह्णि बद्ध्वा रुदती राज्ञः पद्ममिवाञ्जलिम् ।
संभ्रमादब्रवीत्त्रस्ता त्वरमाणाक्षरं वचः ॥८॥
8. sa mūdrhṇi baddhvā rudatī rājñaḥ padmamivāñjalim ,
saṃbhramādabravīttrastā tvaramāṇākṣaraṃ vacaḥ.
8. sā mūrdhni baddhvā rudatī rājñaḥ padmam iva añjalim
saṃbhramāt abravīt trastā tvaramāṇākṣaram vacaḥ
8. sā rudatī mūrdhni baddhvā añjalim iva padmam trastā
saṃbhramāt rājñaḥ tvaramāṇākṣaram vacaḥ abravīt
8. Weeping, she placed her folded hands, like a lotus, on her head, and agitated and afraid, she spoke hurried words to the king.
प्रसीद शिरसा याचे भूमौ निततितास्मि ते ।
याचितास्मि हता देव हन्तव्याहं न हि त्वया ॥९॥
9. prasīda śirasā yāce bhūmau nitatitāsmi te ,
yācitāsmi hatā deva hantavyāhaṃ na hi tvayā.
9. prasīda śirasā yāce bhūmau nitatitā asmi te
yācitā asmi hatā deva hantavyā aham na hi tvayā
9. prasīda aham śirasā yāce bhūmau te nitatitā asmi
aham yācitā asmi hatā deva hi aham na tvayā hantavyā
9. I implore you, be gracious! With bowed head, I am prostrate on the ground before you. I have been forced to beg; I am undone, O Lord; surely, I should not be killed by you.
नैषा हि सा स्त्री भवति श्लाघनीयेन धीमता ।
उभयोर्लोकयोर्वीर पत्या या संप्रसाद्यते ॥१०॥
10. naiṣā hi sā strī bhavati ślāghanīyena dhīmatā ,
ubhayorlokayorvīra patyā yā saṃprasādyate.
10. na eṣā hi sā strī bhavati ślāghanīyena dhīmatā
ubhayoḥ lokayoḥ vīra patyā yā samprasādyate
10. vīra hi eṣā na sā strī bhavati yā ślāghanīyena
dhīmatā patyā ubhayoḥ lokayoḥ samprasādyate
10. Indeed, she is not truly a woman, O hero, who must be appeased by a praiseworthy and wise husband, both in this world and the next.
जानामि धर्मं धर्मज्ञ त्वां जाने सत्यवादिनम् ।
पुत्रशोकार्तया तत्तु मया किमपि भाषितम् ॥११॥
11. jānāmi dharmaṃ dharmajña tvāṃ jāne satyavādinam ,
putraśokārtayā tattu mayā kimapi bhāṣitam.
11. jānāmi dharmam dharmajña tvām jāne satyavādinam
putraśokārtayā tat tu mayā kim api bhāṣitam
11. dharmajña dharmam jānāmi tvām satyavādinam jāne
tu putraśokārtayā mayā tat kim api bhāṣitam
11. O knower of natural law (dharma)! I understand your principles (dharma), and I know you to be a truthful person. However, tormented by the grief for my son, something or other was said by me.
शोको नाशयते धैर्यं शोको नाशयते श्रुतम् ।
शोको नाशयते सर्वं नास्ति शोकसमो रिपुः ॥१२॥
12. śoko nāśayate dhairyaṃ śoko nāśayate śrutam ,
śoko nāśayate sarvaṃ nāsti śokasamo ripuḥ.
12. śokaḥ nāśayate dhairyam śokaḥ nāśayate śrutam
śokaḥ nāśayate sarvam na asti śokasamaḥ ripuḥ
12. śokaḥ dhairyam nāśayate śokaḥ śrutam nāśayate
śokaḥ sarvam nāśayate śokasamaḥ ripuḥ na asti
12. Grief (śoka) destroys fortitude; grief (śoka) destroys learning. Grief (śoka) destroys everything. There is no enemy comparable to grief (śoka).
शयमापतितः सोढुं प्रहरो रिपुहस्ततः ।
सोढुमापतितः शोकः सुसूक्ष्मो ऽपि न शक्यते ॥१३॥
13. śayamāpatitaḥ soḍhuṃ praharo ripuhastataḥ ,
soḍhumāpatitaḥ śokaḥ susūkṣmo'pi na śakyate.
13. śayam āpatitaḥ soḍhum praharaḥ ripuhastataḥ
soḍhum āpatitaḥ śokaḥ susūkṣmaḥ api na śakyate
13. ripuhastataḥ śayam āpatitaḥ praharaḥ soḍhum
āpatitaḥ susūkṣmaḥ api śokaḥ na śakyate
13. A destructive blow (prahara) from an enemy's hand can be endured. But grief (śoka) that has befallen, even if very subtle, cannot be borne.
वनवासाय रामस्य पञ्चरात्रो ऽद्य गण्यते ।
यः शोकहतहर्षायाः पञ्चवर्षोपमो मम ॥१४॥
14. vanavāsāya rāmasya pañcarātro'dya gaṇyate ,
yaḥ śokahataharṣāyāḥ pañcavarṣopamo mama.
14. vanavāsāya rāmasya pañcarātraḥ adya gaṇyate
yaḥ śokahataharṣāyāḥ pañcavarṣopamaḥ mama
14. rāmasya vanavāsāya pañcarātraḥ adya gaṇyate
yaḥ mama śokahataharṣāyāḥ pañcavarṣopamaḥ
14. Today, five nights are counted since Rama went to the forest. This period (of five nights) now feels to me, whose joy is destroyed by grief (śoka), like five years.
तं हि चिन्तयमानायाः शोको ऽयं हृदि वर्धते ।
अदीनामिव वेगेन समुद्रसलिलं महत् ॥१५॥
15. taṃ hi cintayamānāyāḥ śoko'yaṃ hṛdi vardhate ,
adīnāmiva vegena samudrasalilaṃ mahat.
15. tam hi cintayamānāyāḥ śokaḥ ayam hṛdi vardhate
adīnām iva vegena samudra-salilam mahat
15. hi tam cintayamānāyāḥ ayam śokaḥ hṛdi vardhate
mahat samudra-salilam adīnām iva vegena
15. Indeed, as she meditated upon him, this sorrow grew in her heart, just as the vast, undiminished waters of the ocean swell rapidly.
एवं हि कथयन्त्यास्तु कौसल्यायाः शुभं वचः ।
मन्दरश्मिरभूत् सुर्यो रजनी चाभ्यवर्तत ॥१६॥
16. evaṃ hi kathayantyāstu kausalyāyāḥ śubhaṃ vacaḥ ,
mandaraśmirabhūt suryo rajanī cābhyavartata.
16. evam hi kathayantyāḥ tu kausalyāyāḥ śubham vacaḥ
manda-raśmiḥ abhūt sūryaḥ rajanī ca abhyavartata
16. hi evam kausalyāyāḥ śubham vacaḥ kathayantyāḥ tu
sūryaḥ manda-raśmiḥ abhūt ca rajanī abhyavartata
16. Indeed, as Kauśalyā was thus speaking her auspicious words, the sun became dim-rayed and night approached.
अथ प्रह्लादितो वाक्यैर्देव्या कौसल्यया नृपः ।
शोकेन च समाक्रान्तो निद्राया वशमेयिवान् ॥१७॥
17. atha prahlādito vākyairdevyā kausalyayā nṛpaḥ ,
śokena ca samākrānto nidrāyā vaśameyivān.
17. atha prahlāditaḥ vākyaiḥ devyā kausalyayā nṛpaḥ
śokena ca samākrāntaḥ nidrāyāḥ vaśam eyivān
17. atha nṛpaḥ devyā kausalyayā vākyaiḥ prahlāditaḥ
ca śokena samākrāntaḥ nidrāyāḥ vaśam eyivān
17. Then the king, delighted by the words of Queen Kauśalyā, yet also overcome by sorrow, succumbed to sleep.
