स प्राङ्मुखो राजगृहादभिनिर्याय वीर्यवान् ।
ह्रादिनीं दूरपारां च प्रत्यक्स्रोतस्तरङ्गिणीम् ।
शतद्रूमतरच्छ्रीमान्नदीमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः ॥१॥
1. sa prāṅmukho rājagṛhādabhiniryāya vīryavān ,

1. That valorous (vīryavān) and glorious (śrīmān) son of Ikshvaku (ikṣvākunandanaḥ), having departed from Rājagṛha, facing east, crossed the river Sutlej (Śatadru), which was a roaring (hrādinī), wide-banked (dūrapārā) river (taraṅgiṇī) flowing westwards (pratyaksrotas).
एलधाने नदीं तीर्त्वा प्राप्य चापरपर्पटान् ।
शिलामाकुर्वतीं तीर्त्वा आग्नेयं शल्यकर्तनम् ॥२॥
2. eladhāne nadīṃ tīrtvā prāpya cāparaparpaṭān ,
śilāmākurvatīṃ tīrtvā āgneyaṃ śalyakartanam.

2. Having crossed the river at Eladhāna, and having reached the western Parpatas, (he) then crossed the "Rock-Shaping" (śilām ākurvatīm) river and the "Fiery Arrow-Cutting" (āgneyam śalyakartanam) region.
सत्यसंधः शुचिः श्रीमान्प्रेक्षमाणः शिलावहाम् ।
अत्ययात् स महाशैलान् वनं चैत्ररथं प्रति ॥३॥
3. satyasaṃdhaḥ śuciḥ śrīmānprekṣamāṇaḥ śilāvahām ,
atyayāt sa mahāśailān vanaṃ caitrarathaṃ prati.

3. He, truthful, pure, and glorious, observing the river that carries rocks, traversed the great mountains towards the Chaitraratha forest.
वेगिनीं च कुलिङ्गाख्यां ह्रादिनीं पर्वतावृताम् ।
यमुनां प्राप्य संतीर्णो बलमाश्वासयत्तदा ॥४॥
4. veginīṃ ca kuliṅgākhyāṃ hrādinīṃ parvatāvṛtām ,
yamunāṃ prāpya saṃtīrṇo balamāśvāsayattadā.

4. Having reached the swift, noisy, mountain-girt river named Kulinga, and also the Yamuna, he, having crossed (them), then comforted his army.
शीतीकृत्य तु गात्राणि क्लान्तानाश्वास्य वाजिनः ।
तत्र स्नात्वा च पीत्वा च प्रायादादाय चोदकम् ॥५॥
5. śītīkṛtya tu gātrāṇi klāntānāśvāsya vājinaḥ ,
tatra snātvā ca pītvā ca prāyādādāya codakam.

5. Having cooled their bodies and comforted the weary horses, he bathed and drank there. Then, taking water, he proceeded.
राजपुत्रो महारण्यमनभीक्ष्णोपसेवितम् ।
भद्रो भद्रेण यानेन मारुतः खमिवात्ययात् ॥६॥
6. rājaputro mahāraṇyamanabhīkṣṇopasevitam ,
bhadro bhadreṇa yānena mārutaḥ khamivātyayāt.
6. rājaputraḥ mahāraṇyam anabhīkṣṇopasevitam
bhadraḥ bhadreṇa yānena mārutaḥ kham iva atyayāt

6. The noble prince, by an excellent vehicle, traversed the great, unfrequented forest, just as the wind passes through the sky.
तोरणं दक्षिणार्धेन जम्बूप्रस्थमुपागमत् ।
वरूथं च ययौ रम्यं ग्रामं दशरथात्मजः ॥७॥
7. toraṇaṃ dakṣiṇārdhena jambūprasthamupāgamat ,
varūthaṃ ca yayau ramyaṃ grāmaṃ daśarathātmajaḥ.

varūtham ca yayau ramyam grāmam daśarathātmajaḥ

7. The son of Daśaratha (Bharata) approached Jambūprastha through its southern gate, and he went to the beautiful village of Varūtha.
तत्र रम्ये वने वासं कृत्वासौ प्राङ्मुखो ययौ ।
उद्यानमुज्जिहानायाः प्रियका यत्र पादपाः ॥८॥
8. tatra ramye vane vāsaṃ kṛtvāsau prāṅmukho yayau ,
udyānamujjihānāyāḥ priyakā yatra pādapāḥ.
8. tatra ramye vane vāsam kṛtvā asau prāṅmukhaḥ
yayau udyānam ujjihānāyāḥ priyakā yatra pādapāḥ

8. Having made a stay in that charming forest, he (Bharata) went facing east, to the garden of Ujjihānā, where Priyaka trees grew.
सालांस्तु प्रियकान्प्राप्य शीघ्रानास्थाय वाजिनः ।
अनुज्ञाप्याथ भरतो वाहिनीं त्वरितो ययौ ॥९॥
9. sālāṃstu priyakānprāpya śīghrānāsthāya vājinaḥ ,
anujñāpyātha bharato vāhinīṃ tvarito yayau.
9. sālān tu priyakān prāpya śīghrān āsthāya vājinaḥ
anujñāpya atha bharataḥ vāhinīm tvaritaḥ yayau

9. Then Bharata, having reached the Sala and Priyaka trees, mounted swift horses and, after dismissing his army, quickly departed.
वासं कृत्वा सर्वतीर्थे तीर्त्वा चोत्तानकां नदीम् ।
अन्या नदीश्च विविधाः पार्वतीयैस्तुरंगमैः ॥१०॥
10. vāsaṃ kṛtvā sarvatīrthe tīrtvā cottānakāṃ nadīm ,
anyā nadīśca vividhāḥ pārvatīyaisturaṃgamaiḥ.
10. vāsam kṛtvā sarvatīrthe tīrtvā ca uttānakām nadīm
anyāḥ nadīḥ ca vividhāḥ pārvatīyaiḥ turaṅgamaiḥ

10. After making a stay at Sarvatīrtha and crossing the Uttānakā River, he then traversed various other rivers with his mountain-bred horses.
हस्तिपृष्ठकमासाद्य कुटिकामत्यवर्तत ।
ततार च नरव्याघ्रो लौहित्ये स कपीवतीम् ।
एकसाले स्थाणुमतीं विनते गोमतीं नदीम् ॥११॥
11. hastipṛṣṭhakamāsādya kuṭikāmatyavartata ,
tatāra ca naravyāghro lauhitye sa kapīvatīm ,
ekasāle sthāṇumatīṃ vinate gomatīṃ nadīm.

atyavartata tatāra ca naravyāghraḥ
lauhitye saḥ kapīvatīm ekasāle

11. Having mounted an elephant's back, the tiger among men (Bharata) crossed the Kuṭikā river. He then crossed the Kapīvatī in the Lauhitya, the Sthāṇumatī in Ekasāla, and the Gomatī river in Vinatā.
कलिङ्ग नगरे चापि प्राप्य सालवनं तदा ।
भरतः क्षिप्रमागच्छत् सुपरिश्रान्तवाहनः ॥१२॥
12. kaliṅga nagare cāpi prāpya sālavanaṃ tadā ,
bharataḥ kṣipramāgacchat supariśrāntavāhanaḥ.
12. kaliṅga nagare ca api prāpya sālavanam tadā
bharataḥ kṣipram āgacchat supariśrāntavāhanaḥ
12. tadā bharataḥ supariśrāntavāhanaḥ kaliṅga

12. Then, having reached the sāla forest in the city of Kalinga, Bharata quickly arrived, his vehicles extremely weary.
वनं च समतीत्याशु शर्वर्यामरुणोदये ।
अयोध्यां मनुना राज्ञा निर्मितां स ददर्श ह ॥१३॥
13. vanaṃ ca samatītyāśu śarvaryāmaruṇodaye ,
ayodhyāṃ manunā rājñā nirmitāṃ sa dadarśa ha.
13. vanam ca samatītya āśu śarvaryām aruṇodaye
ayodhyām manunā rājñā nirmitām saḥ dadarśa ha
13. saḥ ha āśu vanam ca samatītya śarvaryām
aruṇodaye manunā rājñā nirmitām ayodhyām dadarśa
13. And having swiftly crossed the forest, he indeed saw Ayodhyā, built by King Manu, at dawn.
तां पुरीं पुरुषव्याघ्रः सप्तरात्रोषिटः पथि ।
अयोध्यामग्रतो दृष्ट्वा रथे सारथिमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. tāṃ purīṃ puruṣavyāghraḥ saptarātroṣiṭaḥ pathi ,
ayodhyāmagrato dṛṣṭvā rathe sārathimabravīt.
14. tām purīm puruṣavyāghraḥ saptarātroṣitaḥ pathi
ayodhyām agrataḥ dṛṣṭvā rathe sārathim abravīt
14. pathi saptarātroṣitaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ agrataḥ

14. Having been on the road for seven nights, the tiger among men (Bharata), upon seeing that city, Ayodhyā, ahead, spoke to his charioteer in the chariot.
एषा नातिप्रतीता मे पुण्योद्याना यशस्विनी ।
अयोध्या दृश्यते दूरात् सारथे पाण्डुमृत्तिका ॥१५॥
15. eṣā nātipratītā me puṇyodyānā yaśasvinī ,
ayodhyā dṛśyate dūrāt sārathe pāṇḍumṛttikā.

ayodhyā dṛśyate dūrāt sārathe pāṇḍumṛttikā

15. O charioteer, this Ayodhya - renowned, with sacred gardens, and characterized by its pale earth - is visible to me from afar, though not yet very clearly discernible.
यज्वभिर्गुणसंपन्नैर्ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः ।
भूयिष्ठमृद्धैराकीर्णा राजर्षिवरपालिता ॥१६॥
16. yajvabhirguṇasaṃpannairbrāhmaṇairvedapāragaiḥ ,
bhūyiṣṭhamṛddhairākīrṇā rājarṣivarapālitā.
16. yajvabhiḥ guṇasampannaiḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ vedapāragaiḥ
bhūyiṣṭham ṛddhaiḥ ākīrṇā rājarṣivarapālitā
16. rājarṣivarapālitā bhūyiṣṭham yajvabhiḥ guṇasampannaiḥ
vedapāragaiḥ ṛddhaiḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ ākīrṇā
16. It (the city/land) is mostly filled with prosperous Brahmins, who are endowed with virtues, have mastered the Vedas, and are performers of Vedic rituals (yajña); and it is protected by excellent royal sages.
अयोध्यायां पुराशब्दः श्रूयते तुमुलो महान् ।
समन्तान्नरनारीणां तमद्य न शृणोम्यहम् ॥१७॥
17. ayodhyāyāṃ purāśabdaḥ śrūyate tumulo mahān ,
samantānnaranārīṇāṃ tamadya na śṛṇomyaham.
17. ayodhyāyām purā śabdaḥ śrūyate tumulaḥ mahān
samantāt naranārīṇām tam adya na śṛṇomi aham
17. purā ayodhyāyām samantāt naranārīṇām mahān
tumulaḥ śabdaḥ śrūyate adya aham tam na śṛṇomi
17. Previously, a great and tumultuous sound of men and women was heard from all directions in Ayodhya. However, today, I do not hear that (sound).
उद्यानानि हि सायाह्ने क्रीडित्वोपरतैर्नरैः ।
समन्ताद्विप्रधावद्भिः प्रकाशन्ते ममान्यदा ॥१८॥
18. udyānāni hi sāyāhne krīḍitvoparatairnaraiḥ ,
samantādvipradhāvadbhiḥ prakāśante mamānyadā.
18. udyānāni hi sāyāhne krīḍitvā uparataiḥ naraiḥ
samantāt vipradhāvaddbhiḥ prakāśante mama anyadā
18. hi anyadā sāyāhne krīḍitvā uparataiḥ samantāt
vipradhāvaddbhiḥ naraiḥ udyānāni mama prakāśante
18. Indeed, at other times (formerly), in the evening, the gardens used to appear radiant to me, (bustling) with men who, having played and then ceased their specific games, were running about in all directions.
तान्यद्यानुरुदन्तीव परित्यक्तानि कामिभिः ।
अरण्यभूतेव पुरी सारथे प्रतिभाति मे ॥१९॥
19. tānyadyānurudantīva parityaktāni kāmibhiḥ ,
araṇyabhūteva purī sārathe pratibhāti me.
19. tāni adya anurudanti iva parityaktāni kāmibhiḥ
araṇyabhūtā iva purī sārathe pratibhāti me
19. sārathe adya kāmibhiḥ parityaktāni tāni yānāni
iva anurudanti purī me araṇyabhūtā iva pratibhāti
19. O charioteer, those conveyances, abandoned by lovers, seem to be weeping today. The city appears to me as if it has turned into a forest.
न ह्यत्र यानैर्दृश्यन्ते न गजैर्न च वाजिभिः ।
निर्यान्तो वाभियान्तो वा नरमुख्या यथापुरम् ॥२०॥
20. na hyatra yānairdṛśyante na gajairna ca vājibhiḥ ,
niryānto vābhiyānto vā naramukhyā yathāpuram.
20. na hi atra yānaiḥ dṛśyante na gajaiḥ na ca vājibhiḥ
niryāntaḥ vā abhiyāntaḥ vā naramukhyāḥ yathāpuram
20. hi atra naramukhyāḥ yathāpuram yānaiḥ na gajaiḥ na
ca vājibhiḥ na niryāntaḥ vā abhiyāntaḥ vā dṛśyante
20. Indeed, here, no prominent people are seen departing or arriving in their vehicles, or on elephants, or on horses, as they were before.
अनिष्टानि च पापानि पश्यामि विविधानि च ।
निमित्तान्यमनोज्ञानि तेन सीदति ते मनः ॥२१॥
21. aniṣṭāni ca pāpāni paśyāmi vividhāni ca ,
nimittānyamanojñāni tena sīdati te manaḥ.
21. aniṣṭāni ca pāpāni paśyāmi vividhāni ca
nimittāni amanojñāni tena sīdati te manaḥ
21. aham aniṣṭāni ca pāpāni ca vividhāni amanojñāni
nimittāni paśyāmi tena te manaḥ sīdati
21. I see various undesirable, evil, and unpleasant omens. Therefore, your mind (manas) is sinking into dejection.
द्वारेण वैजयन्तेन प्राविशच्छ्रान्तवाहनः ।
द्वाःस्थैरुत्थाय विजयं पृष्टस्तैः सहितो ययौ ॥२२॥
22. dvāreṇa vaijayantena prāviśacchrāntavāhanaḥ ,
dvāḥsthairutthāya vijayaṃ pṛṣṭastaiḥ sahito yayau.
22. dvāreṇa vaijayantena prāviśat śrāntavāhanaḥ
dvāḥsthaiḥ utthāya vijayam pṛṣṭaḥ taiḥ sahitaḥ yayau
22. śrāntavāhanaḥ vaijayantena dvāreṇa prāviśat
dvāḥsthaiḥ utthāya vijayam pṛṣṭaḥ taiḥ sahitaḥ yayau
22. He, whose vehicle was weary, entered through the Vaijayanta gate. After the gatekeepers rose and greeted him with 'Victory!', he proceeded accompanied by them.
स त्वनेकाग्रहृदयो द्वाःस्थं प्रत्यर्च्य तं जनम् ।
सूतमश्वपतेः क्लान्तमब्रवीत्तत्र राघवः ॥२३॥
23. sa tvanekāgrahṛdayo dvāḥsthaṃ pratyarcya taṃ janam ,
sūtamaśvapateḥ klāntamabravīttatra rāghavaḥ.
23. saḥ tu anekāgra-hṛdayaḥ dvāḥstham pratyarcya tam
janam sūtam aśvapateḥ klāntam abravīt tatra rāghavaḥ
23. rāghavaḥ tu anekāgra-hṛdayaḥ dvāḥstham tam janam
pratyarcya tatra aśvapateḥ klāntam sūtam abravīt
23. Bharata, his heart deeply agitated, first respectfully greeted that doorkeeper, and then spoke there to the weary charioteer of King Aśvapati.
श्रुता नो यादृशाः पूर्वं नृपतीनां विनाशने ।
आकारास्तानहं सर्वानिह पश्यामि सारथे ॥२४॥
24. śrutā no yādṛśāḥ pūrvaṃ nṛpatīnāṃ vināśane ,
ākārāstānahaṃ sarvāniha paśyāmi sārathe.
24. śrutāḥ naḥ yādṛśāḥ pūrvam nṛpatīnām vināśane
ākārān tān aham sarvān iha paśyāmi sārathe
24. sārathe,
pūrvam nṛpatīnām vināśane yādṛśāḥ ākārāḥ naḥ śrutāḥ,
tān sarvān aham iha paśyāmi
24. O charioteer, I see here all those signs that we have previously heard indicate the downfall of kings.
मलिनं चाश्रुपूर्णाक्षं दीनं ध्यानपरं कृशम् ।
सस्त्री पुंसं च पश्यामि जनमुत्कण्ठितं पुरे ॥२५॥
25. malinaṃ cāśrupūrṇākṣaṃ dīnaṃ dhyānaparaṃ kṛśam ,
sastrī puṃsaṃ ca paśyāmi janamutkaṇṭhitaṃ pure.
25. malinam ca aśru-pūrṇa-akṣam dīnam dhyāna-param kṛśam
sa-strī puṃsam ca paśyāmi janam utkaṇṭhitam pure
25. aham pure sa-strī puṃsam ca janam malinam ca aśru-pūrṇa-akṣam
dīnam dhyāna-param kṛśam utkaṇṭhitam paśyāmi
25. I also see the people in the city, both men and women, looking soiled, with eyes full of tears, miserable, immersed in deep thought (dhyāna), emaciated, and anxious.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा भरतः सूतं तं दीनमानसः ।
तान्यनिष्टान्ययोध्यायां प्रेक्ष्य राजगृहं ययौ ॥२६॥
26. ityevamuktvā bharataḥ sūtaṃ taṃ dīnamānasaḥ ,
tānyaniṣṭānyayodhyāyāṃ prekṣya rājagṛhaṃ yayau.
26. iti evam uktvā bharataḥ sūtam tam dīna-mānasaḥ
tāni aniṣṭāni ayodhyāyām prekṣya rāja-gṛham yayau
26. bharataḥ dīna-mānasaḥ,
iti evam tam sūtam uktvā,
ayodhyāyām tāni aniṣṭāni prekṣya,
rāja-gṛham yayau
26. Having said this to the charioteer, Bharata, with a miserable mind, and after observing those inauspicious signs in Ayodhyā, went to the royal palace.
तां शून्यशृङ्गाटकवेश्मरथ्यां रजोऽरुणद्वारकपाटयन्त्राम् ।
दृष्ट्वा पुरीमिन्द्रपुरी प्रकाशां दुःखेन संपूर्णतरो बभूव ॥२७॥
27. tāṃ śūnyaśṛṅgāṭakaveśmarathyāṃ rajo'ruṇadvārakapāṭayantrām ,
dṛṣṭvā purīmindrapurī prakāśāṃ duḥkhena saṃpūrṇataro babhūva.
27. tām śūnyaśṛṅgāṭakaveśmarathyām
rajaḥ aruṇadvārakapāṭayantrām
dṛṣṭvā purīm indrapurī prakāśām
duḥkhena saṃpūrṇataraḥ babhūva

27. Having seen that city, which once shone like Indra's city, now with its crossroads, houses, and streets deserted, and its door panels and bolts reddened with dust, he became completely overwhelmed with sorrow.
बहूनि पश्यन्मनसो ऽप्रियाणि यान्यन्न्यदा नास्य पुरे बभूवुः ।
अवाक्शिरा दीनमना नहृष्टः पितुर्महात्मा प्रविवेश वेश्म ॥२८॥
28. bahūni paśyanmanaso'priyāṇi yānyannyadā nāsya pure babhūvuḥ ,
avākśirā dīnamanā nahṛṣṭaḥ piturmahātmā praviveśa veśma.
28. bahūni paśyan manasaḥ apriyāṇi
yāni anyadā na asya pure babhūvuḥ
avākśirā dīnamanā na hṛṣṭaḥ
pituḥ mahātmā praviveśa veśma
