वचो विज्ञाय हनुमान् सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ।

1. Hanuman, having understood the words of the noble (mahātman) Sugriva, then sprang from Mount Rishyamuka to where the two Raghava (Rama and Lakshmana) were located.
स तत्र गत्वा हनुमान्बलवान् वानरोत्तमः ।
उपचक्राम तौ वाग्भिर्मृद्वीभिः सत्यविक्रमः ॥२॥
2. sa tatra gatvā hanumānbalavān vānarottamaḥ ,

2. Having gone there, Hanuman, who was powerful and the foremost of monkeys, a hero of true valor, approached the two (Rama and Lakshmana) with gentle words.
स्वकं रूपं परित्यज्य भिक्षुरूपेण वानरः ।
आबभाषे च तौ वीरौ यथावत् प्रशशंस च ॥३॥
3. svakaṃ rūpaṃ parityajya bhikṣurūpeṇa vānaraḥ ,
ābabhāṣe ca tau vīrau yathāvat praśaśaṃsa ca.

3. The monkey (Hanuman), having given up his own form and taking the appearance of a mendicant, spoke to those two heroes and duly praised them.
राजर्षिदेवप्रतिमौ तापसौ संशितव्रतौ ।
देशं कथमिमं प्राप्तौ भवन्तौ वरवर्णिनौ ॥४॥
4. rājarṣidevapratimau tāpasau saṃśitavratau ,
deśaṃ kathamimaṃ prāptau bhavantau varavarṇinau.

4. How is it that you two, who resemble royal sages and gods, are ascetics performing severe austerity (tapas) and observing firm vows, and possess excellent complexions, have arrived in this region?
त्रासयन्तौ मृगगणानन्यांश्च वनचारिणः ।
पम्पातीररुहान् वृक्षान् वीक्षमाणौ समन्ततः ॥५॥
5. trāsayantau mṛgagaṇānanyāṃśca vanacāriṇaḥ ,
pampātīraruhān vṛkṣān vīkṣamāṇau samantataḥ.

5. Frightening herds of deer and other forest dwellers, they were looking all around at the trees growing on the banks of Pampa.
इमां नदीं शुभजलां शोभयन्तौ तरस्विनौ ।
धैर्यवन्तौ सुवर्णाभौ कौ युवां चीरवाससौ ॥६॥
6. imāṃ nadīṃ śubhajalāṃ śobhayantau tarasvinau ,
dhairyavantau suvarṇābhau kau yuvāṃ cīravāsasau.

6. Who are you two, mighty ones, adorning this river with pure waters, endowed with patience, golden-hued, and clad in bark garments?
सिंहविप्रेक्षितौ वीरौ सिंहातिबलविक्रमौ ।
शक्रचापनिभे चापे प्रगृह्य विपुलैर्भुजैः ॥७॥
7. siṃhaviprekṣitau vīrau siṃhātibalavikramau ,
śakracāpanibhe cāpe pragṛhya vipulairbhujaiḥ.

7. Heroic, with a lion-like gaze and strength and valor surpassing that of lions, holding bows resembling Indra's (Śakra's) bow with their mighty arms.
श्रीमन्तौ रूपसंपन्नौ वृषभश्रेष्ठविक्रमौ ।
हस्तिहस्तोपमभुजौ द्युतिमन्तौ नरर्षभौ ॥८॥
8. śrīmantau rūpasaṃpannau vṛṣabhaśreṣṭhavikramau ,
hastihastopamabhujau dyutimantau nararṣabhau.

8. They are glorious, endowed with beauty, possessing valor like the best of bulls, with arms resembling elephants' trunks, radiant, and are indeed the foremost among men.
प्रभया पर्वतेन्द्रो ऽयं युवयोरवभासितः ।
राज्यार्हावमरप्रख्यौ कथं देशमिहागतौ ॥९॥
9. prabhayā parvatendro'yaṃ yuvayoravabhāsitaḥ ,
rājyārhāvamaraprakhyau kathaṃ deśamihāgatau.

9. This lord of mountains is illumined by your radiance. How have you two, who are worthy of kingship and resemble gods, arrived in this region?
पद्मपत्रेक्षणौ वीरौ जटामण्डलधारिणौ ।
अन्योन्यसदृशौ वीरौ देवलोकादिवागतौ ॥१०॥
10. padmapatrekṣaṇau vīrau jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇau ,
anyonyasadṛśau vīrau devalokādivāgatau.

10. You two heroes, with eyes like lotus leaves, wearing matted locks, resemble each other and appear as if you have descended from the world of the gods.
यदृच्छयेव संप्राप्तौ चन्द्रसूर्यौ वसुंधराम् ।
विशालवक्षसौ वीरौ मानुषौ देवरूपिणौ ॥११॥
11. yadṛcchayeva saṃprāptau candrasūryau vasuṃdharām ,
viśālavakṣasau vīrau mānuṣau devarūpiṇau.
11. yadṛcchayā iva samprāptau candrasūryau vasundharām
viśālavakṣasau vīrau mānuṣau devarūpiṇau
11. (yuvām) candrasūryau vasundharām yadṛcchayā iva samprāptau.
(yuvām) viśālavakṣasau vīrau mānuṣau devarūpiṇau (sthaḥ).
11. As if by chance, like the moon and sun arriving on earth, these two broad-chested heroes, though human, possess divine forms.
सिंहस्कन्धौ महासत्त्वौ समदाविव गोवृषौ ।
आयताश्च सुवृत्ताश्च बाहवः परिघोत्तमाः ।
सर्वभूषणभूषार्हाः किमर्थं न विभूषितः ॥१२॥
12. siṃhaskandhau mahāsattvau samadāviva govṛṣau ,
āyatāśca suvṛttāśca bāhavaḥ parighottamāḥ ,
sarvabhūṣaṇabhūṣārhāḥ kimarthaṃ na vibhūṣitaḥ.
12. siṁhaskandhau mahāsattvau samadau
iva govṛṣau āyatāḥ ca suvṛttāḥ ca
bāhavaḥ parighottamāḥ
sarvabhūṣaṇabhūṣārhāḥ kimartham na vibhūṣitaḥ
12. (yuvām) siṁhaskandhau mahāsattvau samadau govṛṣau iva (sthaḥ).
(yuvayoḥ) bāhavaḥ āyatāḥ ca suvṛttāḥ ca parighottamāḥ (santi).
sarvabhūṣaṇabhūṣārhāḥ (yuvām) kimartham na vibhūṣitaḥ (sthaḥ)?
12. They have shoulders like lions, possess immense strength, and resemble two rutting bulls. Their arms are long, well-rounded, and formidable like excellent iron maces. Why are they, who are worthy of all ornaments, not adorned?
उभौ योग्यावहं मन्ये रक्षितुं पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
ससागरवनां कृत्स्नां विन्ध्यमेरुविभूषिताम् ॥१३॥
13. ubhau yogyāvahaṃ manye rakṣituṃ pṛthivīmimām ,
sasāgaravanāṃ kṛtsnāṃ vindhyameruvibhūṣitām.
13. ubhau yogyau aham manye rakṣituṃ pṛthivīm imām
sa-sāgaravanām kṛtsnām vindhyameruvibhūṣitām
13. aham ubhau yogyau manye imām kṛtsnām sa-sāgaravanām
vindhyameruvibhūṣitām pṛthivīm rakṣitum
13. I consider both of them capable of protecting this entire earth, which is adorned by the Vindhya and Meru mountains and includes oceans and forests.
इमे च धनुषी चित्रे श्लक्ष्णे चित्रानुलेपने ।
प्रकाशेते यथेन्द्रस्य वज्रे हेमविभूषिते ॥१४॥
14. ime ca dhanuṣī citre ślakṣṇe citrānulepane ,
prakāśete yathendrasya vajre hemavibhūṣite.

prakāśete yathā indrasya vajre hemavibhūṣite

14. And these two bows, both beautiful and smooth, with colorful decorations, shine like Indra's two thunderbolts adorned with gold.
संपूर्णा निशितैर्बाणैर् तूणाश्च शुभदर्शनाः ।
जीवितान्तकरैर्घोरैर्ज्वलद्भिरिव पन्नगैः ॥१५॥
15. saṃpūrṇā niśitairbāṇair tūṇāśca śubhadarśanāḥ ,
jīvitāntakarairghorairjvaladbhiriva pannagaiḥ.
15. sampūrṇāḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ tūṇāḥ ca śubhadarśanāḥ
jīvitāntakaraiḥ ghoraiḥ jvaladbhiḥ iva pannagaiḥ
15. ca śubhadarśanāḥ tūṇāḥ niśitaiḥ jīvitāntakaraiḥ
ghoraiḥ jvaladbhiḥ iva pannagaiḥ bāṇaiḥ sampūrṇāḥ
15. And the quivers, beautiful to behold, are filled with sharp, terrible, life-ending arrows, appearing like blazing serpents.
महाप्रमाणौ विपुलौ तप्तहाटकभूषितौ ।
खड्गावेतौ विराजेते निर्मुक्तभुजगाविव ॥१६॥
16. mahāpramāṇau vipulau taptahāṭakabhūṣitau ,
khaḍgāvetau virājete nirmuktabhujagāviva.

khaḍgau etau virājete nirmuktabhujagau iva

16. These two swords, of great size and expanse, adorned with refined gold, shine brightly like two serpents that have just cast off their skin.
एवं मां परिभाषन्तं
कस्माद्वै नाभिभाषथः ॥१७॥
17. evaṃ māṃ paribhāṣantaṃ
kasmādvai nābhibhāṣathaḥ.

17. Why, then, do you two not address me, who am speaking to you in this manner?
सुग्रीवो नाम धर्मात्मा कश्चिद्वानरयूथपः ।
वीरो विनिकृतो भ्रात्रा जगद्भ्रमति दुःखितः ॥१८॥
18. sugrīvo nāma dharmātmā kaścidvānarayūthapaḥ ,
vīro vinikṛto bhrātrā jagadbhramati duḥkhitaḥ.
18. sugrīvaḥ nāma dharmātmā kaścit vānarayūthapaḥ
vīraḥ vinikṛtaḥ bhrātrā jagat bhramati duḥkhitaḥ
18. nāma kaścit dharmātmā vānarayūthapaḥ sugrīvaḥ
vīraḥ bhrātrā vinikṛtaḥ duḥkhitaḥ jagat bhramati
18. There is a certain monkey chieftain named Sugriva, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteous. This valiant one, having been wronged by his brother, wanders the world in distress.
प्राप्तो ऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन सुग्रीवेण महात्मना ।
राज्ञा वानरमुख्यानां हनुमान्नाम वानरः ॥१९॥
19. prāpto'haṃ preṣitastena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā ,
rājñā vānaramukhyānāṃ hanumānnāma vānaraḥ.
19. prāptaḥ aham preṣitaḥ tena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā
rājñā vānarāmukhyānām hanumān nāma vānaraḥ
19. aham hanumān nāma vānaraḥ prāptaḥ tena mahātmanā
vānarāmukhyānām rājñā sugrīveṇa preṣitaḥ
19. I am Hanuman, a monkey, who has arrived, having been sent by that noble-souled Sugriva, the king of the monkey leaders.
युवाभ्यां सह धर्मात्मा सुग्रीवः सख्यमिच्छति ।
तस्य मां सचिवं वित्तं वानरं पवनात्मजम् ॥२०॥
20. yuvābhyāṃ saha dharmātmā sugrīvaḥ sakhyamicchati ,
tasya māṃ sacivaṃ vittaṃ vānaraṃ pavanātmajam.
20. yuvābhyām saha dharmātmā sugrīvaḥ sakhyam icchati
tasya mām sacivam vittam vānaram pavanātmajam
20. dharmātmā sugrīvaḥ yuvābhyām saha sakhyam icchati
tasya pavanātmajam vānaram sacivam mām vittam
20. Sugriva, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteous, desires friendship with you two. Know me, the son of Vayu, to be his minister, a monkey.
भिक्षुरूपप्रतिच्छन्नं सुग्रीवप्रियकाम्यया ।
ऋश्यमूकादिह प्राप्तं कामगं कामरूपिणम् ॥२१॥
21. bhikṣurūpapraticchannaṃ sugrīvapriyakāmyayā ,
ṛśyamūkādiha prāptaṃ kāmagaṃ kāmarūpiṇam.
21. bhikṣurūpapratichannam sugrīvapriyakāmyayā
ṛśyamūkāt iha prāptam kāmagam kāmarūpiṇam
21. ṛśyamūkāt iha sugrīvapriyakāmyayā

21. (He) arrived here from R̥śyamūka mountain, disguised in the form of a mendicant, capable of moving and assuming any form at will, all out of the desire to please Sugrīva.
एवमुक्त्वा तु हनुमांस्तौ वीरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
वाक्यज्ञौ वाक्यकुशलः पुनर्नोवाच किं चन ॥२२॥
22. evamuktvā tu hanumāṃstau vīrau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
vākyajñau vākyakuśalaḥ punarnovāca kiṃ cana.
22. evam uktvā tu hanumān tau vīrau rāmalakṣmaṇau
vākyajñau vākyakuśalaḥ punaḥ na uvāca kim cana
22. hanumān vākyakuśalaḥ evam uktvā tu,
vākyajñau tau vīrau rāmalakṣmaṇau punaḥ kim cana na uvāca
22. Having spoken thus, Hanumān, who was adept at speaking, did not say anything further to those two heroes, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, who were themselves experts in speech.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ।
प्रहृष्टवदनः श्रीमान्भ्रातरं पार्श्वतः स्थितम् ॥२३॥
23. etacchrutvā vacastasya rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt ,
prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ śrīmānbhrātaraṃ pārśvataḥ sthitam.
23. etat śrutvā vacaḥ tasya rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
prahr̥ṣṭavadanaḥ śrīmān bhrātaram pārśvataḥ sthitam
23. śrīmān prahr̥ṣṭavadanaḥ rāmaḥ tasya etat vacaḥ śrutvā,
pārśvataḥ sthitam bhrātaram lakṣmaṇam abravīt
23. Having heard his words, the glorious Rāma, with a joyful face, spoke to his brother Lakṣmaṇa, who was standing beside him.
सचिवो ऽयं कपीन्द्रस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ।
तमेव काङ्क्षमाणस्य ममान्तिकमुपागतः ॥२४॥
24. sacivo'yaṃ kapīndrasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ ,
tameva kāṅkṣamāṇasya mamāntikamupāgataḥ.
24. sacivaḥ ayam kapīndrasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ
tam eva kāṅkṣamāṇasya mama antikam upāgataḥ
24. ayam kapīndrasya mahātmanaḥ sugrīvasya sacivaḥ.
tam eva kāṅkṣamāṇasya mama antikam upāgataḥ
24. This one is the minister of the great-souled Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys. He has approached my presence, as I was indeed longing for that very Sugrīva.
तमभ्यभाष सौमित्रे सुग्रीवसचिवं कपिम् ।
वाक्यज्ञं मधुरैर्वाक्यैः स्नेहयुक्तमरिंदमम् ॥२५॥
25. tamabhyabhāṣa saumitre sugrīvasacivaṃ kapim ,
vākyajñaṃ madhurairvākyaiḥ snehayuktamariṃdamam.
25. tam abhyabhāṣa saumitre sugrīva-sacivam kapim
vākya-jñam madhuraiḥ vākyaiḥ sneha-yuktam arindamam
25. saumitre tam vākya-jñam sneha-yuktam arindamam
sugrīva-sacivam kapim madhuraiḥ vākyaiḥ abhyabhāṣa
25. O son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa), address that monkey - Sugrīva's minister, who is skilled in words, affectionate, and a vanquisher of enemies - with sweet words.
