निवेश्य सेनां तु विभुः पद्भ्यां पादवतां वरः ।
अभिगन्तुं स काकुत्स्थमियेष गुरुवर्तकम् ॥१॥
1. niveśya senāṃ tu vibhuḥ padbhyāṃ pādavatāṃ varaḥ ,
abhigantuṃ sa kākutsthamiyeṣa guruvartakam.

1. Having stationed his army, the mighty Bharata, the foremost among those who walk on foot, indeed desired to approach Kakutstha's descendant (Rama), who followed the path of his elders, on foot.
निविष्ट मात्रे सैन्ये तु यथोद्देशं विनीतवत् ।
भरतो भ्रातरं वाक्यं शत्रुघ्नमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. niviṣṭa mātre sainye tu yathoddeśaṃ vinītavat ,
bharato bhrātaraṃ vākyaṃ śatrughnamidamabravīt.
2. niviṣṭamātre sainye tu yathā uddeśam vinītavat
bharataḥ bhrātaram vākyam śatrughnam idam abravīt
2. sainye yathoddeśam niviṣṭamātre tu (sati),
bharataḥ vinītavat idam vākyam bhrātaram śatrughnam abravīt
2. As soon as the army was stationed in its designated place, Bharata respectfully spoke this statement to his brother Shatrughna.
क्षिप्रं वनमिदं सौम्य नरसंघैः समन्ततः ।
लुब्धैश्च सहितैरेभिस्त्वमन्वेषितुमर्हसि ॥३॥
3. kṣipraṃ vanamidaṃ saumya narasaṃghaiḥ samantataḥ ,
lubdhaiśca sahitairebhistvamanveṣitumarhasi.
3. kṣipram vanam idam saumya narasaṅghaiḥ samantataḥ
lubdhaiḥ ca sahitaiḥ ebhiḥ tvam anveṣitum arhasi
3. saumya,
tvam idam vanam narasaṅghaiḥ ca ebhiḥ sahitaiḥ lubdhaiḥ ca samantataḥ kṣipram anveṣitum arhasi
3. O gentle one, you should quickly search this forest thoroughly on all sides with these groups of men, including the hunters.
यावन्न रामं द्रक्ष्यामि लक्ष्मणं वा महाबलम् ।
वैदेहीं वा महाभागां न मे शान्तिर्भविष्यति ॥४॥
4. yāvanna rāmaṃ drakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇaṃ vā mahābalam ,
vaidehīṃ vā mahābhāgāṃ na me śāntirbhaviṣyati.
4. yāvat na rāmam drakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇam vā mahābalam
vaidehīm vā mahābhāgām na me śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
4. yāvat (aham) rāmam vā mahābalam lakṣmaṇam vā mahābhāgām vaidehīm vā na drakṣyāmi,
tāvat me śāntiḥ na bhaviṣyati
4. Until I see Rama, or the mighty Lakshmana, or the highly esteemed Vaidehi (Sita), there will be no peace for me.
यावन्न चन्द्रसंकाशं द्रक्ष्यामि शुभमाननम् ।
भ्रातुः पद्मपलाशाक्षं न मे शान्तिर्भविष्यति ॥५॥
5. yāvanna candrasaṃkāśaṃ drakṣyāmi śubhamānanam ,
bhrātuḥ padmapalāśākṣaṃ na me śāntirbhaviṣyati.
5. yāvat na candrasaṃkāśam drakṣyāmi śubham ānanam
bhrātuḥ padmapalāśākṣam na me śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
5. me bhrātuḥ candrasaṃkāśam padmapalāśākṣam śubham
ānanam yāvat na drakṣyāmi na śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
5. As long as I do not see the auspicious face of my brother, which shines like the moon and has eyes like lotus petals, I will find no peace.
यावन्न चरणौ भ्रातुः पार्थिव व्यञ्जनान्वितौ ।
शिरसा धारयिष्यामि न मे शान्तिर्भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. yāvanna caraṇau bhrātuḥ pārthiva vyañjanānvitau ,
śirasā dhārayiṣyāmi na me śāntirbhaviṣyati.
6. yāvat na caraṇau bhrātuḥ pārthiva vyañjanānvitau
śirasā dhārayiṣyāmi na me śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
6. me bhrātuḥ pārthiva vyañjanānvitau caraṇau yāvat
śirasā na dhārayiṣyāmi na śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
6. As long as I do not bear upon my head the two feet of my brother, which are endowed with royal auspicious marks, I will find no peace.
यावन्न राज्ये राज्यार्हः पितृपैतामहे स्थितः ।
अभिषेकजलक्लिन्नो न मे शान्तिर्भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. yāvanna rājye rājyārhaḥ pitṛpaitāmahe sthitaḥ ,
abhiṣekajalaklinno na me śāntirbhaviṣyati.
7. yāvat na rājye rājyārhaḥ pitṛpaitāmahe sthitaḥ
abhiṣekajalaklinnaḥ na me śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
7. rājyārhaḥ abhiṣekajalaklinnaḥ pitṛpaitāmahe
rājye yāvat na sthitaḥ na me śāntiḥ bhaviṣyati
7. As long as the one worthy of kingship is not established in the ancestral kingdom, having been moistened by the waters of consecration, I will find no peace.
कृतकृत्या महाभागा वैदेही जनकात्मजा ।
भर्तारं सागरान्तायाः पृथिव्या यानुगच्छति ॥८॥
8. kṛtakṛtyā mahābhāgā vaidehī janakātmajā ,
bhartāraṃ sāgarāntāyāḥ pṛthivyā yānugacchati.
8. kṛtakṛtyā mahābhāgā vaidehī janakātmajā
bhartāram sāgarāntāyāḥ pṛthivyāḥ yā anugacchati
8. yā kṛtakṛtyā mahābhāgā vaidehī janakātmajā
sāgarāntāyāḥ pṛthivyāḥ bhartāram anugacchati
8. The greatly fortunate and dutiful Vaidehi, Janaka's daughter, is she who follows her husband, the lord of the entire earth bounded by the oceans.
सुभगश्चित्रकूटो ऽसौ गिरिराजोपमो गिरिः ।
यस्मिन् वसति काकुत्स्थः कुबेर इवनन्दने ॥९॥
9. subhagaścitrakūṭo'sau girirājopamo giriḥ ,
yasmin vasati kākutsthaḥ kubera ivanandane.
9. subhagaḥ citrakūṭaḥ asau girirājopamaḥ giriḥ
yasmin vasati kākutsthaḥ kuberaḥ iva nandane
9. asau subhagaḥ citrakūṭaḥ girirājopamaḥ giriḥ
yasmin kākutsthaḥ kuberaḥ iva nandane vasati
9. This charming Citrakūṭa, a mountain comparable to a king among mountains, is where Rama (Kākutstha) resides, just as Kubera dwells in Nandana (Kubera's garden).
कृतकार्यमिदं दुर्गं वनं व्यालनिषेवितम् ।
यदध्यास्ते महातेजा रामः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥१०॥
10. kṛtakāryamidaṃ durgaṃ vanaṃ vyālaniṣevitam ,
yadadhyāste mahātejā rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ.
10. kṛtakāryam idam durgam vanam vyālaniṣevitam
yat adhyāste mahātejāḥ rāmaḥ śastrabṛtām varaḥ
10. idam durgam vyālaniṣevitam vanam kṛtakāryam
yat mahātejāḥ śastrabṛtām varaḥ rāmaḥ adhyāste
10. This impenetrable forest, inhabited by fierce beasts, has achieved its purpose, because the greatly powerful Rama, the best among those who wield weapons, now dwells there.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा भरतः पुरुषर्षभः ।
पद्भ्यामेव महातेजाः प्रविवेश महद्वनम् ॥११॥
11. evamuktvā mahātejā bharataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
padbhyāmeva mahātejāḥ praviveśa mahadvanam.
11. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ bharataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ
padbhyām eva mahātejāḥ praviveśa mahat vanam
11. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ bharataḥ
mahat vanam padbhyām eva praviveśa
11. Having spoken thus, the greatly illustrious Bharata, a bull among men, himself entered the great forest on foot.
स तानि द्रुमजालानि जातानि गिरिसानुषु ।
पुष्पिताग्राणि मध्येन जगाम वदतां वरः ॥१२॥
12. sa tāni drumajālāni jātāni girisānuṣu ,
puṣpitāgrāṇi madhyena jagāma vadatāṃ varaḥ.
12. saḥ tāni drumajālāni jātāni girisānuṣu
puṣpitāgrāṇi madhyena jagāma vadatām varaḥ
12. saḥ vadatām varaḥ girisānuṣu jātāni
puṣpitāgrāṇi tāni drumajālāni madhyena jagāma
12. He, the best among orators, walked through the midst of those clusters of trees, with their tops in bloom, that had grown on the mountain slopes.
स गिरेश्चित्रकूटस्य सालमासाद्य पुष्पितम् ।
रामाश्रमगतस्याग्नेर्ददर्श ध्वजमुच्छ्रितम् ॥१३॥
13. sa gireścitrakūṭasya sālamāsādya puṣpitam ,
rāmāśramagatasyāgnerdadarśa dhvajamucchritam.
13. saḥ gireḥ citrakūṭasya sālam āsādya puṣpitam
rāmāśramagatasya agneḥ dadarśa dhvajam ucchritam
13. saḥ citrakūṭasya gireḥ puṣpitam sālam āsādya
rāmāśramagatasya agneḥ ucchritam dhvajam dadarśa
13. Upon reaching a blooming sāl tree on the Citrakūṭa mountain, he saw a high-raised banner (of smoke) belonging to the sacred fire (agni) at Rāma's hermitage (āśrama).
तं दृष्ट्वा भरतः श्रीमान्मुमोद सहबान्धवः ।
अत्र राम इति ज्ञात्वा गतः पारमिवाम्भसः ॥१४॥
14. taṃ dṛṣṭvā bharataḥ śrīmānmumoda sahabāndhavaḥ ,
atra rāma iti jñātvā gataḥ pāramivāmbhasaḥ.
14. tam dṛṣṭvā bharataḥ śrīmān mumoda saha-bāndhavaḥ
atra rāmaḥ iti jñātvā gataḥ pāram iva ambhasaḥ
14. śrīmān bharataḥ tam dṛṣṭvā saha-bāndhavaḥ mumoda
atra rāmaḥ iti jñātvā ambhasaḥ pāram iva gataḥ
14. Upon seeing that (sign), the glorious Bharata rejoiced with his kinsmen. Having realized, 'Rāma is here,' he felt as if he had successfully crossed a vast ocean (of difficulties).
स चित्रकूटे तु गिरौ निशाम्य रामाश्रमं पुण्यजनोपपन्नम् ।
गुहेन सार्धं त्वरितो जगाम पुनर्निवेश्यैव चमूं महात्मा ॥१५॥
15. sa citrakūṭe tu girau niśāmya rāmāśramaṃ puṇyajanopapannam ,
guhena sārdhaṃ tvarito jagāma punarniveśyaiva camūṃ mahātmā.
15. saḥ citrakūṭe tu girau niśāmya
rāmāśramam puṇyajanonupapannam
guhena sārdham tvaritaḥ jagāma
punaḥ niveśya eva camūm mahātmā
15. mahātmā saḥ tu citrakūṭe girau
puṇyajanonupapannam rāmāśramam
niśāmya camūm punaḥ niveśya eva
guhena sārdham tvaritaḥ jagāma
15. The great-souled (mahātmā) Bharata, having indeed perceived Rāma's hermitage (āśrama) on the Citrakūṭa mountain, (a place) frequented by virtuous people, quickly went along with Guha, after having settled his army again (in a camp).
