Then, with a distressed heart, remembering his own humiliation (nigraha), sighing repeatedly, he had formed an enmity with the great soul.
स दक्षिणां दिशं गत्वा महिष्या सह राघव ।
तताप परमं घोरं विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
फलमूलाशनो दान्तश्चचार परमं तपः ॥२॥

2. sa dakṣiṇāṃ diśaṃ gatvā mahiṣyā saha rāghava ,
tatāpa paramaṃ ghoraṃ viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
phalamūlāśano dāntaścacāra paramaṃ tapaḥ.

rāghava saḥ mahātapaḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahiṣyā saha dakṣiṇām diśam gatvā paramam ghoram tapaḥ tatāpa.
phalamūlāśanaḥ dāntaḥ ca paramam tapaḥ cacāra.

O Rāghava, that great ascetic (mahātapas) Viśvāmitra, having gone to the southern direction with his queen, undertook an extremely severe ascetic practice (tapas). Eating fruits and roots and being self-controlled, he practiced supreme penance (tapas).
अथास्य जज्ञिरे पुत्राः सत्यधर्मपरायणाः ।
हविष्पन्दो मधुष्पन्दो दृढनेत्रो महारथः ॥३॥

Then, sons devoted to truth (satya) and natural law (dharma) were born to him. Their names were Haviṣpanda, Madhuṣpanda, Dṛḍhanetra, and Mahāratha.
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम् ॥४॥

4. pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ ,

Indeed, when a full thousand years had passed, Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds and the supreme lord of the beings, spoke gentle words to Viśvāmitra, whose wealth was his ascetic practice (tapas).
जिता राजर्षिलोकास्ते तपसा कुशिकात्मज ।
अनेन तपसा त्वां हि राजर्षिरिति विद्महे ॥५॥

5. jitā rājarṣilokāste tapasā kuśikātmaja ,
anena tapasā tvāṃ hi rājarṣiriti vidmahe.

O son of Kuśika, you have conquered the worlds of the royal sages through your asceticism (tapas). Indeed, it is by this very asceticism (tapas) that we now recognize you as a royal sage.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा जगाम सह दैवतैः ।
त्रिविष्टपं ब्रह्मलोकं लोकानां परमेश्वरः ॥६॥

6. evamuktvā mahātejā jagāma saha daivataiḥ ,

Having spoken thus, the greatly effulgent one, the supreme lord of the worlds, went with the deities to Triloka (heaven) and Brahmaloka.

दुःखेन महताविष्टः समन्युरिदमब्रवीत् ॥७॥

7. viśvāmitro'pi tacchrutvā hriyā kiṃ cidavāṅmukhaḥ ,
duḥkhena mahatāviṣṭaḥ samanyuridamabravīt.

Viśvāmitra also, having heard that, became somewhat downcast due to shame. Overwhelmed by great sorrow and filled with resentment, he spoke these words.
तपश्च सुमहत्तप्तं राजर्षिरिति मां विदुः ।
देवाः सर्षिगणाः सर्वे नास्ति मन्ये तपःफलम् ॥८॥
देवाः सर्षिगणाः सर्वे नास्ति मन्ये तपःफलम् ॥८॥
8. tapaśca sumahattaptaṃ rājarṣiriti māṃ viduḥ ,
devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve nāsti manye tapaḥphalam.

tapaḥ ca sumahat taptam rājarṣiḥ iti mām viduḥ
devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve na asti manye tapasphalam

Although I have performed very great austerities (tapas), and all the gods, along with groups of sages, know me as a royal sage, I believe there is no true fruit (phalam) to these ascetic practices (tapas).
एवं निश्चित्य मनसा भूय एव महातपाः ।
तपश्चचार काकुत्स्थ परमं परमात्मवान् ॥९॥

9. evaṃ niścitya manasā bhūya eva mahātapāḥ ,

O Kakutstha (Rāma), having thus resolved in his mind, that great ascetic, being supremely self-controlled, again performed the highest form of austerity (tapas).
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः ।
त्रिशङ्कुरिति विख्यात इक्ष्वाकु कुलनन्दनः ॥१०॥

10. etasminneva kāle tu satyavādī jitendriyaḥ ,

Indeed, at this very time, there lived a renowned man from the Ikṣvāku lineage, Triśaṅku by name, who was truthful and had conquered his senses.
तस्य बुद्धिः समुत्पन्ना यजेयमिति राघव ।
गच्छेयं स्वशरीरेण देवानां परमां गतिम् ॥११॥

11. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā yajeyamiti rāghava ,
gaccheyaṃ svaśarīreṇa devānāṃ paramāṃ gatim.

O Rāghava, this thought arose in his mind: 'I should perform a great Vedic ritual (yajña) so that I may attain the supreme state of the gods with my own physical body.'
स वसिष्ठं समाहूय कथयामास चिन्तितम् ।
अशक्यमिति चाप्युक्तो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥१२॥

12. sa vasiṣṭhaṃ samāhūya kathayāmāsa cintitam ,
aśakyamiti cāpyukto vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā.

He summoned Vasiṣṭha and told him what he had planned (or his concern). And he was even told by the great-souled (mahātman) Vasiṣṭha that "this is impossible."
प्रत्याख्यातो वसिष्ठेन स ययौ दक्षिणां दिशम् ।
वसिष्ठा दीर्घ तपसस्तपो यत्र हि तेपिरे ॥१३॥

13. pratyākhyāto vasiṣṭhena sa yayau dakṣiṇāṃ diśam ,

Rejected by Vasiṣṭha, he went to the southern region, where the Vasiṣṭhas (Vasiṣṭha's sons or lineage) had indeed performed extensive asceticism (tapas).
त्रिशङ्कुः सुमहातेजाः शतं परमभास्वरम् ।
वसिष्ठपुत्रान्ददृशे तप्यमानान्यशस्विनः ॥१४॥

Triśaṅku, who was exceedingly radiant, saw a hundred of Vasiṣṭha's sons, who were supremely effulgent, renowned, and engaged in severe asceticism (tapas).
सो ऽभिगम्य महात्मानः सर्वानेव गुरोः सुतान् ।
अभिवाद्यानुपूर्व्येण ह्रिया किं चिदवाङ्मुखः ।
अब्रवीत् सुमहातेजाः सर्वानेव कृताञ्जलिः ॥१५॥

15. so'bhigamya mahātmānaḥ sarvāneva guroḥ sutān ,
abhivādyānupūrvyeṇa hriyā kiṃ cidavāṅmukhaḥ ,
abravīt sumahātejāḥ sarvāneva kṛtāñjaliḥ.
abhivādyānupūrvyeṇa hriyā kiṃ cidavāṅmukhaḥ ,
abravīt sumahātejāḥ sarvāneva kṛtāñjaliḥ.

saḥ abhigamya mahātmānaḥ sarvān eva
guroḥ sutān | abhivādya ānupūrvyeṇa
hriyā kiñcit avāṅmukhaḥ | abravīt
sumahātejāḥ sarvān eva kṛtāñjaliḥ
guroḥ sutān | abhivādya ānupūrvyeṇa

sumahātejāḥ saḥ mahātmānaḥ guroḥ
sarvān eva sutān abhigamya ānupūrvyeṇa
abhivādya hriyā kiñcit
avāṅmukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ eva sarvān abravīt
sarvān eva sutān abhigamya ānupūrvyeṇa

15.
He (Triśaṅku), that exceedingly radiant one, having approached all those great-souled (mahātman) sons of his teacher (guru) (Vasiṣṭha), and having saluted them in sequence, with some shame and a downcast face, spoke to them all with folded hands.
शरणं वः प्रपद्ये ऽहं शरण्याञ् शरणागतः ।
प्रत्याख्यातो ऽस्मि भद्रं वो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥१६॥

16. śaraṇaṃ vaḥ prapadye'haṃ śaraṇyāñ śaraṇāgataḥ ,
pratyākhyāto'smi bhadraṃ vo vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā.

śaraṇam vaḥ prapadye aham śaraṇyān śaraṇāgataḥ |

I, having come for refuge, approach you who are worthy of providing refuge. I have been rejected by the great-souled Vasiṣṭha; may good fortune be upon you.
यष्टुकामो महायज्ञं तदनुज्ञातुमर्थथ ।
गुरुपुत्रानहं सर्वान्नमस्कृत्य प्रसादये ॥१७॥

17. yaṣṭukāmo mahāyajñaṃ tadanujñātumarthatha ,
guruputrānahaṃ sarvānnamaskṛtya prasādaye.

I, desiring to perform a great Vedic ritual (yajña), request permission for it. Having bowed to all the sons of the guru (guru), I implore their favor.
शिरसा प्रणतो याचे ब्राह्मणांस्तपसि स्थितान् ।
ते मां भवन्तः सिद्ध्यर्थं याजयन्तु समाहिताः ।
सशरीरो यथाहं हि देवलोकमवाप्नुयाम् ॥१८॥
ते मां भवन्तः सिद्ध्यर्थं याजयन्तु समाहिताः ।
सशरीरो यथाहं हि देवलोकमवाप्नुयाम् ॥१८॥
18. śirasā praṇato yāce brāhmaṇāṃstapasi sthitān ,
te māṃ bhavantaḥ siddhyarthaṃ yājayantu samāhitāḥ ,
saśarīro yathāhaṃ hi devalokamavāpnuyām.

śirasā praṇataḥ yāce brāhmaṇān tapasi
sthitān | te mām bhavantaḥ
siddhyartham yājayantu samāhitāḥ | saśarīraḥ
yathā aham hi devalokam avāpnuyām
sthitān | te mām bhavantaḥ
siddhyartham yājayantu samāhitāḥ | saśarīraḥ
yathā aham hi devalokam avāpnuyām

aham śirasā praṇataḥ tapasi sthitān
brāhmaṇān yāce samāhitāḥ te bhavantaḥ
mām siddhyartham yājayantu yathā
aham hi saśarīraḥ devalokam avāpnuyām
brāhmaṇān yāce samāhitāḥ te bhavantaḥ

18.
With my head bowed, I entreat the Brahmins who are established in austerity (tapas). May you, being concentrated, cause me to perform the sacrifice for the sake of accomplishment, so that I may indeed attain the world of the gods (devaloka) with my body.
प्रत्याख्यातो वसिष्ठेन गतिमन्यां तपोधनाः ।
गुरुपुत्रानृते सर्वान्नाहं पश्यामि कां चन ॥१९॥

19. pratyākhyāto vasiṣṭhena gatimanyāṃ tapodhanāḥ ,
guruputrānṛte sarvānnāhaṃ paśyāmi kāṃ cana.

19.
O venerable ascetics (tapasvinaḥ), having been rejected by Vasiṣṭha, I see no other recourse, except for all the sons of the guru (guru).
इक्ष्वाकूणां हि सर्वेषां पुरोधाः परमा गतिः ।
तस्मादनन्तरं सर्वे भवन्तो दैवतं मम ॥२०॥

Indeed, for all members of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, the family priest is the ultimate refuge (गति). Therefore, after him, all of you venerable ones are my deities.
