ऋषेर्वचनमाज्ञाय रामः संध्यामुपासितुम् ।
उपाक्रामत् सरः पुण्यमप्सरोभिर्निषेवितम् ॥१॥
1. ṛṣervacanamājñāya rāmaḥ saṃdhyāmupāsitum ,
upākrāmat saraḥ puṇyamapsarobhirniṣevitam.

1. Having understood the sage's instruction, Rāma, in order to perform the twilight ritual, approached a sacred lake frequented by Apsaras.
तत्रोदकमुपस्पृष्श्य संध्यामन्वास्य पश्चिमाम् ।
आश्रमं प्राविशद् रामः कुम्भयोनेर्महात्मनः ॥२॥
2. tatrodakamupaspṛṣśya saṃdhyāmanvāsya paścimām ,
āśramaṃ prāviśad rāmaḥ kumbhayonermahātmanaḥ.
2. tatra udakam upaspṛśya sandhyām anvāsya paścimām
āśramam prāviśat rāmaḥ kumbhayoneḥ mahātmanaḥ

2. Having touched water there and performed the evening (sandhyā) ritual, Rama entered the hermitage of the great-souled (mahātman) Agastya (kumbhayoni).
अस्यागस्त्यो बहुगुणं फलमूलं तथौषधीः ।
शाकानि च पवित्राणि भोजनार्थमकल्पयत् ॥३॥
3. asyāgastyo bahuguṇaṃ phalamūlaṃ tathauṣadhīḥ ,
śākāni ca pavitrāṇi bhojanārthamakalpayat.
3. asya agastyaḥ bahuguṇam phalamūlam tathā oṣadhīḥ
śākāni ca pavitrāṇi bhojanārtham akalpayat
3. agastyaḥ asya bahuguṇam phalamūlam tathā ca

3. For him, Agastya arranged excellent fruits, roots, and also pure herbs and vegetables for food.
स भुक्तवान्नरश्रेष्ठस्तदन्नममृतोपमम् ।
प्रीतश्च परितुष्टश्च तां रात्रिं समुपावसत् ॥४॥
4. sa bhuktavānnaraśreṣṭhastadannamamṛtopamam ,
prītaśca parituṣṭaśca tāṃ rātriṃ samupāvasat.
4. saḥ bhuktavān naraśreṣṭhaḥ tat annam amṛtopamam
prītaḥ ca parituṣṭaḥ ca tām rātrim samupāvasat
4. saḥ naraśreṣṭhaḥ tat amṛtopamam annam bhuktavān
ca prītaḥ ca parituṣṭaḥ tām rātrim samupāvasat
4. The best among men, having eaten that nectar-like food, was pleased and fully satisfied, and thus resided there for that night.
प्रभाते काल्यमुत्थाय कृत्वाह्निकमरिंदमः ।
ऋषिं समभिचक्राम गमनाय रघूत्तमः ॥५॥
5. prabhāte kālyamutthāya kṛtvāhnikamariṃdamaḥ ,
ṛṣiṃ samabhicakrāma gamanāya raghūttamaḥ.
5. prabhāte kālyam utthāya kṛtvā āhnikam ariṃdamaḥ
ṛṣim samabhicakrāma gamanāya raghūttamaḥ
5. ariṃdamaḥ raghūttamaḥ prabhāte kālyam utthāya

5. In the morning, having risen early and performed his daily rituals, Rama, the subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), the best of the Raghus (raghūttama), approached the sage (ṛṣi) to depart.
अभिवाद्याब्रवीद् रामो महर्षिं कुम्भसंभवम् ।
आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि मामनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. abhivādyābravīd rāmo maharṣiṃ kumbhasaṃbhavam ,
āpṛcche tvāṃ gamiṣyāmi māmanujñātumarhasi.
6. abhivādya abravīt rāmaḥ maharṣim kumbhasaṃbhavam
āpṛcche tvām gamiṣyāmi mām anujñātum arhasi
6. rāmaḥ maharṣim kumbhasaṃbhavam abhivādya abravīt

6. Rama bowed and addressed the great sage Agastya, saying, "I bid you farewell, for I am about to depart. You should grant me permission."
धन्यो ऽस्म्यनुगृहीतो ऽस्मि दर्शनेन महात्मनः ।
द्रष्टुं चैवागमिष्यामि पावनार्थमिहात्मनः ॥७॥
7. dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi darśanena mahātmanaḥ ,
draṣṭuṃ caivāgamiṣyāmi pāvanārthamihātmanaḥ.
7. dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ asmi darśanena mahātmanaḥ
draṣṭum ca eva āgamiṣyāmi pāvanārtham iha ātmanaḥ
7. asmi dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ mahātmanaḥ darśanena
ca eva iha ātmanaḥ pāvanārtham draṣṭum āgamiṣyāmi
7. I am blessed, I am indeed fortunate to have had the vision of your great being. I will certainly return here to see you again for the purification of my own self (ātman).
तथा वदति काकुत्स्थे वाक्यमद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
उवाच परमप्रीतो धर्मनेत्रस्तपोधनः ॥८॥
8. tathā vadati kākutsthe vākyamadbhutadarśanam ,
uvāca paramaprīto dharmanetrastapodhanaḥ.
8. tathā vadati kākutsthe vākyam adbhutadarśanam
uvāca paramaprītaḥ dharmanetraḥ tapodhanaḥ
8. kākutsthe tathā adbhutadarśanam vākyam vadati

8. As Rama (kākutstha) thus uttered those remarkably profound words, the sage, who was guided by natural law (dharma) and whose wealth was austerity (tapas), spoke, greatly pleased.
अत्यद्भुतमिदं वाक्यं तव राम शुभाक्षरम् ।
पावनः सर्वलोकानां त्वमेव रघुनन्दन ॥९॥
9. atyadbhutamidaṃ vākyaṃ tava rāma śubhākṣaram ,
pāvanaḥ sarvalokānāṃ tvameva raghunandana.
9. atyadbhutam idam vākyam tava rāma śubhākṣaram
pāvanaḥ sarvalokānām tvam eva raghunandana
9. rāma tava idam atyadbhutam śubhākṣaram vākyam
raghunandana tvam eva sarvalokānām pāvanaḥ
9. O Rama, these words of yours are truly marvelous and filled with auspiciousness. O scion of Raghu (raghunandana), you alone are the sanctifier of all worlds.
मुहूर्तमपि राम त्वां ये नु पश्यन्ति के चन ।
पाविताः स्वर्गभूतास्ते पूज्यन्ते दिवि दैवतैः ॥१०॥
10. muhūrtamapi rāma tvāṃ ye nu paśyanti ke cana ,
pāvitāḥ svargabhūtāste pūjyante divi daivataiḥ.
10. muhūrtam api rāma tvām ye nu paśyanti ke cana
pāvitāḥ svargabhūtāḥ te pūjyante divi daivataiḥ
10. rāma ye ke cana api muhūrtam tvām paśyanti te
pāvitāḥ svargabhūtāḥ divi daivataiḥ pūjyante
10. O Rāma, those who merely gaze upon you for a moment become purified and transformed into celestial beings, worshipped by the deities in heaven.
ये च त्वां घोरचक्षुर्भिरीक्षन्ते प्राणिनो भुवि ।
हतास्ते यमदण्डेन सद्यो निरयगामिनः ॥११॥
11. ye ca tvāṃ ghoracakṣurbhirīkṣante prāṇino bhuvi ,
hatāste yamadaṇḍena sadyo nirayagāminaḥ.
11. ye ca tvām ghoracakṣubhiḥ īkṣante prāṇinaḥ
bhuvi hatāḥ te yamadaṇḍena sadyaḥ nirayagāminaḥ
11. ye ca prāṇinaḥ bhuvi tvām ghoracakṣubhiḥ īkṣante
te sadyaḥ yamadaṇḍena hatāḥ nirayagāminaḥ
11. And those creatures on earth who gaze at you with hostile eyes are immediately struck down by the rod of Yama and are destined for hell.
गच्छ चारिष्टमव्यग्रः पन्थानमकुतोभयम् ।
प्रशाधि राज्यं धर्मेण गतिर्हि जगतो भवान् ॥१२॥
12. gaccha cāriṣṭamavyagraḥ panthānamakutobhayam ,
praśādhi rājyaṃ dharmeṇa gatirhi jagato bhavān.
12. gaccha ca ariṣṭam avyagraḥ panthānam akutobhayam
praśādhi rājyam dharmeṇa gatiḥ hi jagataḥ bhavān
12. avyagraḥ tvam ariṣṭam akutobhayam panthānam gaccha
ca rājyam dharmeṇa praśādhi hi bhavān jagataḥ gatiḥ
12. Proceed, undistracted, on an auspicious and safe path. Rule the kingdom with righteousness (dharma), for you are indeed the protector of the world.
एवमुक्तस्तु मुनिना प्राञ्जलिः प्र्पग्रहो नृपः ।
अभ्यवादयत प्राज्ञस्तमृषिं पुण्यशीलिनम् ॥१३॥
13. evamuktastu muninā prāñjaliḥ prpagraho nṛpaḥ ,
abhyavādayata prājñastamṛṣiṃ puṇyaśīlinam.
13. evam uktaḥ tu muninā prāñjaliḥ prapragrahaḥ
nṛpaḥ abhyavādayata prājñaḥ tam ṛṣim puṇyaśīlinam
13. evam muninā uktaḥ tu prājñaḥ nṛpaḥ prāñjaliḥ
prapragrahaḥ tam puṇyaśīlinam ṛṣim abhyavādayata
13. Thus addressed by the sage (muni), the wise king, with folded hands and humble demeanor, bowed to that virtuous sage.
अभिवाद्य मुनिश्रेष्ठं तांश्च सर्वांस्तपोधनान् ।
अध्यारोहत्तदव्यग्रः पुष्पकं हेमभूषितम् ॥१४॥
14. abhivādya muniśreṣṭhaṃ tāṃśca sarvāṃstapodhanān ,
adhyārohattadavyagraḥ puṣpakaṃ hemabhūṣitam.
14. abhivādya muniśreṣṭham tān ca sarvān tapodhanān
adhyārohat tat avyagraḥ puṣpakam hemabhūṣitam
14. muniśreṣṭham tān ca sarvān tapodhanān abhivādya
tat avyagraḥ hemabhūṣitam puṣpakam adhyārohat
14. Having saluted the foremost sage and all those ascetics (tapas), he then, unperturbed, boarded the gold-adorned Puṣpaka chariot.
तं प्रयान्तं मुनिगणा आशीर्वादैः समन्ततः ।
अपूजयन्महेन्द्राभं सहस्राक्षमिवामराः ॥१५॥
15. taṃ prayāntaṃ munigaṇā āśīrvādaiḥ samantataḥ ,
apūjayanmahendrābhaṃ sahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ.
15. tam prayāntam munigaṇāḥ āśīrvādaiḥ samantataḥ
apūjayan mahendrābham sahasrākṣam iva amarāḥ
15. munigaṇāḥ samantataḥ āśīrvādaiḥ tam prayāntam
mahendrābham sahasrākṣam iva amarāḥ apūjayan
15. As he departed, the groups of sages (muni), from all sides, honored him with blessings, just as the gods (amarāḥ) would worship Mahendra (Indra), the thousand-eyed one.
स्वस्थः स ददृशे रामः पुष्पके हेमभूषिते ।
शशी मेघसमीपस्थो यथा जलधरागमे ॥१६॥
16. svasthaḥ sa dadṛśe rāmaḥ puṣpake hemabhūṣite ,
śaśī meghasamīpastho yathā jaladharāgame.

śaśī meghasamīpasthaḥ yathā jaladharāgame
16. saḥ rāmaḥ svasthaḥ hemabhūṣite puṣpake dadṛśe,

16. Rama, serene and composed (svasthaḥ), was seen in the gold-adorned Puṣpaka chariot, resembling the moon positioned near clouds during the onset of the rainy season.
ततो ऽर्धदिवसे प्राप्ते पूज्यमानस्ततस्ततः ।
अयोध्यां प्राप्य काकुत्स्थो विमानादवरोहत ॥१७॥
17. tato'rdhadivase prāpte pūjyamānastatastataḥ ,
ayodhyāṃ prāpya kākutstho vimānādavarohata.
17. tataḥ ardhacivase prāpte pūjyamānaḥ tataḥ tataḥ
ayodhyām prāpya kākutsthaḥ vimānāt avarohat
17. tataḥ ardhacivase prāpte tataḥ tataḥ pūjyamānaḥ
kākutsthaḥ ayodhyām prāpya vimānāt avarohat
17. Then, when midday (ardhadivase) arrived, after being honored from all directions, Rama (kākutstha), having reached Ayodhya, descended from the aerial car.
ततो विसृज्य रुचिरं पुष्पकं कामगामिनम् ।
कक्ष्यान्तरविनिक्षिप्तं द्वाःस्थं रामो ऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥१८॥
18. tato visṛjya ruciraṃ puṣpakaṃ kāmagāminam ,
kakṣyāntaravinikṣiptaṃ dvāḥsthaṃ rāmo'bravīdvacaḥ.
18. tataḥ visṛjya ruciram puṣpakam kāmagāminam
kakṣyāntaravinikṣiptam dvāḥstham rāmaḥ abravīt vacaḥ
18. tataḥ rāmaḥ kāmagāminam ruciram puṣpakam visṛjya
kakṣyāntaravinikṣiptam dvāḥstham vacaḥ abravīt
18. Then, dismissing the beautiful Puṣpaka (chariot), which could travel at will, Rāma spoke these words to the doorkeeper who was stationed in the inner chamber.
लक्ष्मणं भरतं चैव गत्वा तौ लघुविक्रमौ ।
ममागमनमाख्याय शब्दापय च मां चिरम् ॥१९॥
19. lakṣmaṇaṃ bharataṃ caiva gatvā tau laghuvikramau ,
mamāgamanamākhyāya śabdāpaya ca māṃ ciram.
19. lakṣmaṇam bharatam ca eva gatvā tau laghuvikramau
mama āgamanam ākhyāya śabdāpaya ca mām ciram
19. gatvā tau laghuvikramau lakṣmaṇam bharatam ca
eva mama āgamanam ākhyāya mām ca ciram śabdāpaya
19. (You, doorkeeper,) go swiftly, and, announcing my arrival to Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata - those two swift-moving ones - summon them to me without delay.
