Having heard the words of Viśvāmitra, Rāma, along with Lakṣmaṇa, became extremely astonished and then spoke to Viśvāmitra.
अत्यद्भुतमिदं ब्रह्मन् कथितं परमं त्वया ।
गङ्गावतरणं पुण्यं सागरस्य च पूरणम् ॥२॥

2. atyadbhutamidaṃ brahman kathitaṃ paramaṃ tvayā ,
gaṅgāvataraṇaṃ puṇyaṃ sāgarasya ca pūraṇam.

"O Brahmin (brahman), this supreme and extremely wonderful narrative, the descent of the Gaṅgā and the filling of the ocean, has been recounted by you, and it is indeed sacred."
तस्य सा शर्वरी सर्वा सह सौमित्रिणा तदा ।
जगाम चिन्तयानस्य विश्वामित्रकथां शुभाम् ॥३॥

Then, that entire night passed for him (Rāma) along with Lakṣmaṇa (saumitri), as he pondered the auspicious story of Viśvāmitra.
ततः प्रभाते विमले विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ।

Then, in the clear morning, Rāghava, the subduer of enemies, having completed his daily rituals, spoke these words to the great sage Viśvāmitra.
गता भगवती रात्रिः श्रोतव्यं परमं श्रुतम् ।
क्षणभूतेव सा रात्रिः संवृत्तेयं महातपः ।
इमां चिन्तयतः सर्वां निखिलेन कथां तव ॥५॥
क्षणभूतेव सा रात्रिः संवृत्तेयं महातपः ।

The divine night has passed, and the supreme knowledge (śrutam) to be heard has been heard. O great ascetic (mahātapas), this night, as I contemplated your entire story completely, seemed to have become but a fleeting moment.
तराम सरितां श्रेष्ठां पुण्यां त्रिपथगां नदीम् ।
नौरेषा हि सुखास्तीर्णा ऋषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
भगवन्तमिह प्राप्तं ज्ञात्वा त्वरितमागता ॥६॥
नौरेषा हि सुखास्तीर्णा ऋषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।

6. tarāma saritāṃ śreṣṭhāṃ puṇyāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm ,
naureṣā hi sukhāstīrṇā ṛṣīṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ,
bhagavantamiha prāptaṃ jñātvā tvaritamāgatā.

Let us cross the sacred (puṇyām) river (nadī), the best of rivers (saritām), the Ganges (tripathagām), which flows in three paths. This boat (nauḥ) is indeed comfortably furnished; it has arrived quickly, for the sages (ṛṣīṇām) of virtuous deeds (puṇyakarmaṇām), knowing that the venerable one (bhagavantam) has arrived here.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राघवस्य महात्मनः ।

mahātmanaḥ rāghavasya tasya tat vacanam śrutvā

Having heard those words of the great-souled (ātman) Rāghava, he (Viśvāmitra), along with the assembly of sages and Rāghava, caused the crossing to be made.
उत्तरं तीरमासाद्य संपूज्यर्षिगणं तथ ।
गङ्गाकूले निविष्टास्ते विशालां ददृशुः पुरीम् ॥८॥

8. uttaraṃ tīramāsādya saṃpūjyarṣigaṇaṃ tatha ,

After reaching the northern bank and honoring the assembly of sages, they settled on the bank of the Gaṅgā and saw the city of Viśālā.
ततो मुनिवरस्तूर्णं जगाम सहराघवः ।
विशालां नगरीं रम्यां दिव्यां स्वर्गोपमां तदा ॥९॥

9. tato munivarastūrṇaṃ jagāma saharāghavaḥ ,
viśālāṃ nagarīṃ ramyāṃ divyāṃ svargopamāṃ tadā.

tataḥ muni-varaḥ tūrṇam jagāma saha-rāghavaḥ

Then, the best of sages, accompanied by Rāghava, quickly went to the charming city of Viśālā, which was divine and resembled heaven, at that time.
अथ रामो महाप्राज्ञो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ।
पप्रच्छ प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा विशालामुत्तमां पुरीम् ॥१०॥

10. atha rāmo mahāprājño viśvāmitraṃ mahāmunim ,

Then, the supremely wise Rāma, with folded hands (prāñjali), asked the great sage (mahāmuni) Viśvāmitra about the excellent city of Viśālā.
कतरो राजवंशो ऽयं विशालायां महामुने ।
श्रोतुमिच्छामि भद्रं ते परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥११॥

11. kataro rājavaṃśo'yaṃ viśālāyāṃ mahāmune ,
śrotumicchāmi bhadraṃ te paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me.

mahā-mune,
ayam kataraḥ rāja-vaṃśaḥ viśālāyām? śrotum icchāmi; te bhadram; hi me param kautūhalam.

11.
O great sage (mahāmuni), which royal dynasty is this in Viśālā? I wish to hear, as I have extreme curiosity (kautūhala). May good fortune be with you!

Having heard those words of Rāma, the foremost among sages then began to narrate that ancient story concerning Viśāla.
श्रूयतां राम शक्रस्य कथां कथयतः शुभाम् ।
अस्मिन्देशे हि यद्वृत्तं शृणु तत्त्वेन राघव ॥१३॥

13. śrūyatāṃ rāma śakrasya kathāṃ kathayataḥ śubhām ,

O Rāma, let the auspicious story of Śakra be heard as I narrate it. O Rāghava, listen attentively and truly to whatever happened in this very land.
पूर्वं कृतयुगे राम दितेः पुत्रा महाबलाः ।
अदितेश्च महाभागा वीर्यवन्तः सुधार्मिकाः ॥१४॥

14.
O Rāma, formerly, in the Kṛtayuga, Diti's sons were immensely powerful. And Aditi's sons were also greatly fortunate, valorous, and highly righteous (dharma).
ततस्तेषां नरश्रेष्ठ बुद्धिरासीन्महात्मनाम् ।
अमरा निर्जराश्चैव कथं स्याम निरामयाः ॥१५॥

15. tatasteṣāṃ naraśreṣṭha buddhirāsīnmahātmanām ,
amarā nirjarāścaiva kathaṃ syāma nirāmayāḥ.

tataḥ teṣām naraśreṣṭha buddhiḥ āsīt mahātmanām

naraśreṣṭha tataḥ teṣām mahātmanām buddhiḥ āsīt [iti

15.
Then, O best among men, an idea occurred to those great-souled (ātman) beings: 'How may we become immortal, ageless, and free from all afflictions?'
तेषां चिन्तयतां राम बुद्धिरासीद्विपश्चिताम् ।
क्षीरोदमथनं कृत्वा रसं प्राप्स्याम तत्र वै ॥१६॥

16. teṣāṃ cintayatāṃ rāma buddhirāsīdvipaścitām ,
kṣīrodamathanaṃ kṛtvā rasaṃ prāpsyāma tatra vai.

O Rāma, for those wise ones who were contemplating, an idea arose: "Having churned the ocean of milk, we shall indeed obtain the essence (rasa) from it."
ततो निश्चित्य मथनं योक्त्रं कृत्वा च वासुकिम् ।
मन्थानं मन्दरं कृत्वा ममन्थुरमितौजसः ॥१७॥

17. tato niścitya mathanaṃ yoktraṃ kṛtvā ca vāsukim ,
manthānaṃ mandaraṃ kṛtvā mamanthuramitaujasaḥ.

Then, having decided upon the churning and having made Vāsuki the serpent their rope, and Mandara mountain their churning rod, those immensely powerful beings churned.
अथ धन्वन्तरिर्नाम अप्सराश्च सुवर्चसः ।
अप्सु निर्मथनादेव रसात्तस्माद्वरस्त्रियः ।
उत्पेतुर्मनुजश्रेष्ठ तस्मादप्सरसो ऽभवन् ॥१८॥
अप्सु निर्मथनादेव रसात्तस्माद्वरस्त्रियः ।
उत्पेतुर्मनुजश्रेष्ठ तस्मादप्सरसो ऽभवन् ॥१८॥
18. atha dhanvantarirnāma apsarāśca suvarcasaḥ ,
apsu nirmathanādeva rasāttasmādvarastriyaḥ ,
utpeturmanujaśreṣṭha tasmādapsaraso'bhavan.
apsu nirmathanādeva rasāttasmādvarastriyaḥ ,
utpeturmanujaśreṣṭha tasmādapsaraso'bhavan.

atha dhanvantariḥ nāma apsarāḥ ca
suvarcasaḥ apsu nirmathanāt eva
rasāt tasmāt varastriyaḥ utpetuḥ
manuja-śreṣṭha tasmāt apsarasaḥ abhavan

rasāt tasmāt varastriyaḥ utpetuḥ

manuja-śreṣṭha atha tasmāt nirmathanāt
eva rasāt apsu dhanvantariḥ
nāma ca suvarcasaḥ varastriyaḥ apsarāḥ

18.
O best of men, then from the essence (rasa) of that churning in the waters, Dhanvantari by name, and brilliant Apsaras, excellent women, arose. From that, they became known as Apsaras.
षष्टिः कोट्यो ऽभवंस्तासामप्सराणां सुवर्चसाम् ।
असंख्येयास्तु काकुत्स्थ यास्तासां परिचारिकाः ॥१९॥

ṣaṣṭiḥ koṭyaḥ abhavan tāsām apsarāṇām suvarcasām

asaṃkhyeyāḥ tu kākutstha yāḥ tāsām paricārikāḥ

kākutstha tāsām suvarcasām apsarāṇām ṣaṣṭiḥ koṭyaḥ
abhavan tu yāḥ tāsām paricārikāḥ asaṃkhyeyāḥ
abhavan tu yāḥ tāsām paricārikāḥ asaṃkhyeyāḥ

O Kākutstha, sixty crores (six hundred million) of those radiant Apsaras came into being. But their attendants were innumerable.
न ताः स्म प्रतिगृह्णन्ति सर्वे ते देवदानवाः ।
अप्रतिग्रहणाच्चैव तेन साधारणाः स्मृताः ॥२०॥

All those gods and demons did not accept them (referring to the previously mentioned substances). And indeed, because of that non-acceptance, they were considered common (or shared).

Then, O delight of Raghu, the greatly fortunate daughter of Varuṇa, Varuṇī, emerged, seeking acceptance (or a partner).

O Rāma, the sons of Diti did not accept that daughter of Varuṇa. But O hero, the sons of Aditi accepted that blameless one.
असुरास्तेन दैतेयाः सुरास्तेनादितेः सुताः ।
हृष्टाः प्रमुदिताश्चासन् वारुणी ग्रहणात् सुराः ॥२३॥

Therefore, the Daityas (sons of Diti) were called Asuras (demons). And because of that (acceptance), the sons of Aditi were called Suras (gods). The gods were delighted and greatly pleased by the acceptance of Varuṇī.
उच्चैःश्रवा हयश्रेष्ठो मणिरत्नं च कौस्तुभम् ।

O best among men, Uccaiḥśravas, the foremost of horses, and the Kaustubha jewel-gem, likewise the excellent elixir of immortality, emerged.
अथ तस्य कृते राम महानासीत् कुलक्षयः ।

O Rāma, thereupon for his sake, a great destruction of lineages occurred. Then, indeed, the sons of Aditi began destroying the sons of Diti.

The valiant sons (ātmaja) of Aditi killed the sons of Diti. In that dreadful, great battle between the Daityas and the Adityas, (they fought) intensely.
निहत्य दितिपुत्रांस्तु राज्यं प्राप्य पुरंदरः ।
शशास मुदितो लोकान् सर्षिसंघान् सचारणान् ॥२७॥

Having killed the sons of Diti and having obtained the kingdom, Indra (Purandara), delighted, ruled the worlds, along with the assemblies of sages and the Charanas.
