रावणग्रहणं तत्तु वायुग्रहणसंनिभम् ।
ऋषिः पुलस्त्यः शुश्राव कथितं दिवि दैवतैः ॥१॥
1. rāvaṇagrahaṇaṃ tattu vāyugrahaṇasaṃnibham ,
ṛṣiḥ pulastyaḥ śuśrāva kathitaṃ divi daivataiḥ.

ṛṣiḥ pulastyaḥ divi daivataiḥ kathitam (idam) śuśrāva.
1. But that capture of Rāvaṇa was like trying to seize the wind. Sage Pulastya heard it spoken by the deities in heaven.
ततः पुत्रसुतस्नेहात् कम्प्यमानो महाधृतिः ।
माहिष्मतीपतिं द्रष्टुमाजगाम महानृषिः ॥२॥
2. tataḥ putrasutasnehāt kampyamāno mahādhṛtiḥ ,
māhiṣmatīpatiṃ draṣṭumājagāma mahānṛṣiḥ.

2. Then, agitated by affection for his grandson and greatly resolute, the great sage came to see the lord of Māhiṣmatī.
स वायुमार्गमास्थाय वायुतुल्यगतिर्द्विजः ।
पुरीं माहिष्मतीं प्राप्तो मनःसंतापविक्रमः ॥३॥
3. sa vāyumārgamāsthāya vāyutulyagatirdvijaḥ ,
purīṃ māhiṣmatīṃ prāpto manaḥsaṃtāpavikramaḥ.
3. saḥ vāyumārgam āsthāya vāyutulyagatiḥ dvijaḥ
purīm māhiṣmatīm prāptaḥ manaḥsaṃtāpavikramaḥ
3. saḥ dvijaḥ vāyumārgam āsthāya vāyutulyagatiḥ manaḥsaṃtāpavikramaḥ māhiṣmatīm purīm prāptaḥ.
3. He, the twice-born (dvija), having taken the aerial route with speed like the wind, reached the city of Māhiṣmatī, his valor distressed by mental anguish.
सो ऽमरावतिसंकाशां हृष्टपुष्टजनावृताम् ।
प्रविवेश पुरीं ब्रह्मा इन्द्रस्येवामरावतीम् ॥४॥
4. so'marāvatisaṃkāśāṃ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtām ,
praviveśa purīṃ brahmā indrasyevāmarāvatīm.
4. saḥ amarāvatisaṃkāśām hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtām
praviveśa purīm brahmā indrasya iva amarāvatīm

4. Brahma entered the city, which resembled Amaravati and was filled with joyful and well-nourished people, just as Indra enters his capital, Amaravati.
पादचारमिवादित्यं निष्पतन्तं सुदुर्दृशम् ।
ततस्ते प्रत्यभिज्ञाय अर्जुनाय न्यवेदयन् ॥५॥
5. pādacāramivādityaṃ niṣpatantaṃ sudurdṛśam ,
tataste pratyabhijñāya arjunāya nyavedayan.
5. pādacāram iva ādityaṃ niṣpatantaṃ sudurdṛśam
tataḥ te pratyabhijñāya arjunāya nyavedayan
5. tataḥ te pādacāram iva ādityaṃ niṣpatantaṃ

5. Then, they recognized that person, who was emerging like the sun walking on foot and was extremely difficult to behold, and they reported this to Arjuna.
पुलस्त्य इति तं श्रुत्वा वचनं हैहयाधिपः ।
शिरस्यञ्जलिमुद्धृत्य प्रत्युद्गच्छद्द्विजोत्तमम् ॥६॥
6. pulastya iti taṃ śrutvā vacanaṃ haihayādhipaḥ ,
śirasyañjalimuddhṛtya pratyudgacchaddvijottamam.
6. pulastyaḥ iti tam śrutvā vacanaṃ haihayādhipaḥ
śirasi añjalim uddhṛtya pratyudgacchat dvijottamam
6. haihayādhipaḥ pulastyaḥ iti vacanaṃ tam śrutvā

6. When the Haihaya king heard "Pulastya" referring to him (the sage), he raised his hands to his head in reverence and went forth to meet the eminent Brahmin.
पुरोहितो ऽस्य गृह्यार्घ्यं मधुपर्कं तथैव च ।
पुरस्तात् प्रययौ राज्ञ इन्द्रस्येव बृहस्पतिः ॥७॥
7. purohito'sya gṛhyārghyaṃ madhuparkaṃ tathaiva ca ,
purastāt prayayau rājña indrasyeva bṛhaspatiḥ.
7. purohitaḥ asya gṛhya arghyaṃ madhuparkaṃ tathā eva
ca purastāt prayayau rājñaḥ indrasya iva bṛhaspatiḥ
7. asya purohitaḥ arghyaṃ madhuparkaṃ tathā eva ca gṛhya
rājñaḥ purastāt bṛhaspatiḥ indrasya iva prayayau
7. His priest, taking the ritual water (arghya) and the honorific honey-mixture (madhuparka), went ahead of the king, just as Brihaspati precedes Indra.
ततस्तमृषिमायान्तमुद्यन्तमिव भास्करम् ।
अर्जुनो दृश्य संप्राप्तं ववन्देन्द्र इवेश्वरम् ॥८॥
8. tatastamṛṣimāyāntamudyantamiva bhāskaram ,
arjuno dṛśya saṃprāptaṃ vavandendra iveśvaram.
8. tatas tam ṛṣim āyāntam udyantam iva bhāskaram
arjunaḥ dṛśya samprāptam vavanda indraḥ iva īśvaram
8. tatas arjunaḥ udyantam bhāskaram iva āyāntam
samprāptam tam ṛṣim dṛśya indraḥ īśvaram iva vavanda
8. Then, upon seeing that sage approaching, who was radiant like the rising sun and had just arrived, Arjuna bowed to him as Indra bows to the lord.
स तस्य मधुपर्कं च पाद्यमर्घ्यं च दापयन् ।
पुलस्त्यमाह राजेन्द्रो हर्षगद्गदया गिरा ॥९॥
9. sa tasya madhuparkaṃ ca pādyamarghyaṃ ca dāpayan ,
pulastyamāha rājendro harṣagadgadayā girā.
9. saḥ tasya madhuparkam ca pādyam arghyam ca dāpayan
pulastyam āha rājendraḥ harṣagadgadayā girā
9. saḥ rājendraḥ tasya madhuparkam ca pādyam arghyam
ca dāpayan harṣagadgadayā girā pulastyam āha
9. The king of kings (Arjuna), presenting him (Pulastya) with the honey-mixture (madhuparka), water for the feet, and a respectful offering, spoke to Pulastya with a voice choked with joy.
अद्येयममरावत्या तुल्या माहिष्मती कृता ।
अद्याहं तु द्विजेन्द्रेन्द्र यस्मात् पश्यामि दुर्दृशम् ॥१०॥
10. adyeyamamarāvatyā tulyā māhiṣmatī kṛtā ,
adyāhaṃ tu dvijendrendra yasmāt paśyāmi durdṛśam.
10. adya iyam amarāvatyā tulyā māhiṣmatī kṛtā adya
aham tu dvijendrendra yasmāt paśyāmi durdṛśam
10. dvijendrendra adya iyam māhiṣmatī amarāvatyā
tulyā kṛtā adya tu aham yasmāt durdṛśam paśyāmi
10. Today, this city of Māhiṣmatī has been made equal to Amarāvatī. Today, O chief of chief brahmins, I am truly blessed, because I behold you, who are so difficult to see.
अद्य मे कुशलं देव अद्य मे कुलमुद्धृतम् ।
यत्ते देवगणैर्वन्द्यौ वन्दे ऽहं चरणाविमौ ॥११॥
11. adya me kuśalaṃ deva adya me kulamuddhṛtam ,
yatte devagaṇairvandyau vande'haṃ caraṇāvimau.
11. adya me kuśalam deva adya me kulam uddhṛtam yat
te devagaṇaiḥ vandyau vande aham caraṇau imau
11. deva adya me kuśalam adya me kulam uddhṛtam yat
devagaṇaiḥ vandyau te imau caraṇau aham vande
11. Today, O divine one, I experience true welfare, and today my lineage is uplifted, because I bow to these two feet of yours, which are revered even by the hosts of gods.
इदं राज्यमिमे पुत्रा इमे दारा इमे वयम् ।
ब्रह्मन् किं कुर्म किं कार्यमाज्ञापयतु नो भवान् ॥१२॥
12. idaṃ rājyamime putrā ime dārā ime vayam ,
brahman kiṃ kurma kiṃ kāryamājñāpayatu no bhavān.
12. idam rājyam ime putrāḥ ime dārāḥ ime vayam
brahman kim kurma kim kāryam ājñāpayatu naḥ bhavān
12. brahman ime rājyam ime putrāḥ ime dārāḥ ime
vayam kim kurma kim kāryam bhavān naḥ ājñāpayatu
12. This is our kingdom, these are our sons, these are our wives, and here we stand. O brahmin (brahman), what should we do? What is our task? Please command us.
तं धर्मे ऽग्निषु भृत्येषु शिवं पृष्ट्वाथ पार्थिवम् ।
पुलस्त्योवाच राजानं हैहयानां तदार्जुनम् ॥१३॥
13. taṃ dharme'gniṣu bhṛtyeṣu śivaṃ pṛṣṭvātha pārthivam ,
pulastyovāca rājānaṃ haihayānāṃ tadārjunam.
13. tam dharme agniṣu bhṛtyeṣu śivam pṛṣṭvā atha pārthivam
pulastyaḥ uvāca rājānam haihayānām tat arjunam
13. atha pulastyaḥ haihayānām rājānam tat arjunam tam
pārthivam dharme agniṣu bhṛtyeṣu śivam pṛṣṭvā uvāca
13. Then, after inquiring about the king's well-being concerning his constitution (dharma), his sacred fires, and his servants, Pulastya spoke to Arjuna, that king of the Haihayas.
राजेन्द्रामलपद्माक्षपूर्णचन्द्रनिभानन ।
अतुलं ते बलं येन दशग्रीवस्त्वया जितः ॥१४॥
14. rājendrāmalapadmākṣapūrṇacandranibhānana ,
atulaṃ te balaṃ yena daśagrīvastvayā jitaḥ.
14. rājendrāmalapadmākṣapūrṇacandranibhānana
atulam te balam yena daśagrīvaḥ tvayā jitaḥ
14. rājendrāmalapadmākṣapūrṇacandranibhānana te
atulam balam (asti) yena daśagrīvaḥ tvayā jitaḥ
14. O best of kings, whose eyes are like spotless lotuses, and whose face resembles the full moon! Your strength is incomparable, by which Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) was conquered by you.
भयाद् यस्यावतिष्ठेतां निष्पन्दौ सागरानिलौ ।
सो ऽयमद्य त्वया बद्धः पौत्रो मे ऽतीवदुर्जयः ॥१५॥
15. bhayād yasyāvatiṣṭhetāṃ niṣpandau sāgarānilau ,
so'yamadya tvayā baddhaḥ pautro me'tīvadurjayaḥ.
15. bhayāt yasya avatiṣṭhetām niṣpandau sāgarānilau saḥ
ayam adya tvayā baddhaḥ pautraḥ me atīvadurjayaḥ
15. yasya bhayāt sāgarānilau niṣpandau avatiṣṭhetām saḥ
ayam me pautraḥ atīvadurjayaḥ adya tvayā baddhaḥ
15. That grandson of mine, before whom both the ocean and the wind would stand motionless out of fear, that very one has now been bound by you, though he is exceedingly difficult to overcome.
तत् पुत्रक यशः स्फीतं नाम विश्रावितं त्वया ।
मद्वाक्याद् याच्यमानो ऽद्य मुञ्च वत्स दशाननम् ॥१६॥
16. tat putraka yaśaḥ sphītaṃ nāma viśrāvitaṃ tvayā ,
madvākyād yācyamāno'dya muñca vatsa daśānanam.
16. tat putraka yaśaḥ sphītam nāma viśrāvitam tvayā
mad-vākyāt yācyamānaḥ adya muñca vatsa daśānanam
16. putraka vatsa tvayā sphītam nāma yaśaḥ viśrāvitam
tat adya mad-vākyāt yācyamānaḥ muñca daśānanam
16. My son, you have indeed made your great fame known. Therefore, now, being requested by my words, O dear one, release Daśānana (Rāvaṇa).
पुलस्त्याज्ञां स गृह्याथ अकिंचनवचो ऽर्जुनः ।
मुमोच पार्थिवेन्द्रेन्द्रो राक्षसेन्द्रं प्रहृष्टवत् ॥१७॥
17. pulastyājñāṃ sa gṛhyātha akiṃcanavaco'rjunaḥ ,
mumoca pārthivendrendro rākṣasendraṃ prahṛṣṭavat.
17. pulastya ājñām saḥ gṛhya atha akiñcana vacaḥ arjunaḥ
mumoca pārthivendra-indraḥ rākṣasendra-m prahṛṣṭavat
17. atha saḥ arjunaḥ pārthivendra-indraḥ pulastya ājñām
akiñcana vacaḥ gṛhya prahṛṣṭavat rākṣasendra-m mumoca
17. Then, Arjuna (Kārtavīrya), the lord among kings, having received Pulastya's command and the plea of the helpless one, joyfully released the king of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa).
स तं प्रमुक्त्वा त्रिदशारिमर्जुनः प्रपूज्य दिव्याभरणस्रगम्बरैः ।
अहिंसाकं सख्यमुपेत्य साग्निकं प्रणम्य स ब्रह्मसुतं गृहं ययौ ॥१८॥
18. sa taṃ pramuktvā tridaśārimarjunaḥ prapūjya divyābharaṇasragambaraiḥ ,
ahiṃsākaṃ sakhyamupetya sāgnikaṃ praṇamya sa brahmasutaṃ gṛhaṃ yayau.
18. saḥ tam pramuktvā tridaśārim arjunaḥ
prapūjya divya-ābharaṇa-srak-ambaraiḥ
ahiṃsākam sakhyam upetya sa-agnikam
praṇamya saḥ brahmasutam gṛham yayau
18. arjunaḥ saḥ tam tridaśārim pramuktvā
divya-ābharaṇa-srak-ambaraiḥ prapūjya
ahiṃsākam sa-agnikam sakhyam upetya
brahmasutam praṇamya saḥ gṛham yayau
18. Having released that enemy of the gods (Rāvaṇa), Arjuna (Kārtavīrya) honored him with divine ornaments, garlands, and garments. Then, having established a friendship based on non-harming (ahiṃsā) and consecrated by a fire ritual (sāgnikam), and having bowed down to Pulastya, the son of Brahmā, he went home.
पुलस्त्येनापि संगम्य राक्षसेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् ।
परिष्वङ्गकृतातिथ्यो लज्जमानो विसर्जितः ॥१९॥
19. pulastyenāpi saṃgamya rākṣasendraḥ pratāpavān ,
pariṣvaṅgakṛtātithyo lajjamāno visarjitaḥ.
19. pulastyena api saṅgamya rākṣasendraḥ pratāpavān
pariṣvaṅga-kṛta-ātithyaḥ lajjamānaḥ visarjitaḥ
19. pratāpavān rākṣasendraḥ pulastyena api saṅgamya
pariṣvaṅga-kṛta-ātithyaḥ lajjamānaḥ visarjitaḥ
19. The powerful king of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), after meeting with Pulastya and being honored with an embrace as a guest, was also dismissed by him, feeling ashamed.
पितामहसुतश्चापि पुलस्त्यो मुनिसत्तमः ।
मोचयित्वा दशग्रीवं ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम सः ॥२०॥
20. pitāmahasutaścāpi pulastyo munisattamaḥ ,
mocayitvā daśagrīvaṃ brahmalokaṃ jagāma saḥ.
20. pitāmaha-sutaḥ ca api pulastyaḥ muni-sattamaḥ
mocayitvā daśagrīvam brahmalokam jagāma saḥ
20. And Pulastya, the best of sages and son of Brahmā, after releasing Daśagrīva, went to the world of Brahmā (brahmaloka).
एवं स रावणः प्राप्तः कार्तवीर्यात्तु धर्षणात् ।
पुलस्त्यवचनाच्चापि पुनर्मोक्षमवाप्तवान् ॥२१॥
21. evaṃ sa rāvaṇaḥ prāptaḥ kārtavīryāttu dharṣaṇāt ,
pulastyavacanāccāpi punarmokṣamavāptavān.
21. evam saḥ rāvaṇaḥ prāptaḥ kārtavīryāt tu dharṣaṇāt
pulastya-vacanāt ca api punaḥ mokṣam avāptavān
21. In this way, that Rāvaṇa, having experienced humiliation from Kārtavīrya, obtained release (mokṣa) once again due to the command of Pulastya.
एवं बलिभ्यो बलिनः सन्ति राघवनन्दन ।
नावज्ञा परतः कार्या य इच्छेच्छ्रेय आत्मनः ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ balibhyo balinaḥ santi rāghavanandana ,
nāvajñā parataḥ kāryā ya icchecchreya ātmanaḥ.
22. evam balibhyaḥ balinaḥ santi rāghava-nandana na
avajñā parataḥ kāryā yaḥ icchet śreyaḥ ātmanaḥ
22. Thus, O delight of Raghu (Rāma), there are those who are stronger than the strong. One who desires their own welfare (śreyaḥ) should not show disrespect towards others.
ततः स राजा पिशिताशनानां सहस्रबाहोरुपलभ्य मैत्रीम् ।
पुनर्नराणां कदनं चकार चचार सर्वां पृथिवीं च दर्पात् ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ sa rājā piśitāśanānāṃ sahasrabāhorupalabhya maitrīm ,
punarnarāṇāṃ kadanaṃ cakāra cacāra sarvāṃ pṛthivīṃ ca darpāt.
23. tataḥ saḥ rājā piśitāśanānām
sahasrabāhoḥ upalabhya maitrīm
punaḥ narāṇām kadanam cakāra
cacāra sarvām pṛthivīm ca darpāt
23. Then that king of flesh-eaters (Rāvaṇa), having gained friendship from Sahasrabāhu (Kārtavīrya Arjuna), again wrought destruction upon humans and traversed the entire earth out of arrogance.
