ततः कृतोदकं स्नातं तं गृध्रं हरियूथपाः ।
उपविष्टा गिरौ दुर्गे परिवार्य समन्ततः ॥१॥

1. Thereafter, having performed the water ritual and bathed, the chiefs of the monkeys sat down all around, surrounding that vulture (Sampati) on the rugged mountain.
तमङ्गदमुपासीनं तैः सर्वैर्हरिभिर्वृतम् ।
जनितप्रत्ययो हर्षात् संपातिः पुनरब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. tamaṅgadamupāsīnaṃ taiḥ sarvairharibhirvṛtam ,
janitapratyayo harṣāt saṃpātiḥ punarabravīt.

2. Sampati, feeling confident and joyful, again addressed Angada who was seated there, surrounded by all the monkeys.
कृत्वा निःशब्दमेकाग्राः शृण्वन्तु हरयो मम ।
तत्त्वं संकीर्तयिष्यामि यथा जानामि मैथिलीम् ॥३॥
3. kṛtvā niḥśabdamekāgrāḥ śṛṇvantu harayo mama ,
tattvaṃ saṃkīrtayiṣyāmi yathā jānāmi maithilīm.

3. Let the monkeys listen to me with concentration, making no sound. I will reveal the truth about Maithili (Sītā) as I know it.
अस्य विन्ध्यस्य शिखरे पतितो ऽस्मि पुरा वने ।
सूर्यातपपरीताङ्गो निर्दग्धः सूर्यरश्मिभिः ॥४॥
4. asya vindhyasya śikhare patito'smi purā vane ,
sūryātapaparītāṅgo nirdagdhaḥ sūryaraśmibhiḥ.

4. Long ago, I fell on the peak of this Vindhya mountain in the forest, my body afflicted by the sun's heat and scorched by the sun's rays.
लब्धसंज्ञस्तु षड्रात्राद्विवशो विह्वलन्निव ।
वीक्षमाणो दिशः सर्वा नाभिजानामि किं चन ॥५॥
5. labdhasaṃjñastu ṣaḍrātrādvivaśo vihvalanniva ,
vīkṣamāṇo diśaḥ sarvā nābhijānāmi kiṃ cana.
5. labdhasaṃjñaḥ tu ṣaḍrātrāt vivaśaḥ vihvalan iva
vīkṣamāṇaḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ na abhijānāmi kim cana
5. ṣaḍrātrāt labdhasaṃjñaḥ tu vivaśaḥ vihvalan iva
sarvāḥ diśaḥ vīkṣamāṇaḥ kim cana na abhijānāmi
5. After six nights, having regained consciousness, I was helpless and as if bewildered. Looking in all directions, I did not recognize anything at all.
ततस्तु सागराञ् शैलान्नदीः सर्वाः सरांसि च ।
वनान्यटविदेशांश्च समीक्ष्य मतिरागमत् ॥६॥
6. tatastu sāgarāñ śailānnadīḥ sarvāḥ sarāṃsi ca ,
vanānyaṭavideśāṃśca samīkṣya matirāgamat.
6. tataḥ tu sāgarān śailān nadīḥ sarvāḥ sarāṃsi
ca vanāni aṭavī deśān ca samīkṣya matiḥ āgamat
6. tataḥ tu sāgarān śailān sarvāḥ nadīḥ sarāṃsi
ca vanāni aṭavī deśān ca samīkṣya matiḥ āgamat
6. Then, having observed the oceans, mountains, all the rivers, lakes, forests, and forest regions, my consciousness returned.
हृष्टपक्षिगणाकीर्णः कन्दरान्तरकूटवान् ।
दक्षिणस्योदधेस्तीरे विन्ध्यो ऽयमिति निश्चितः ॥७॥
7. hṛṣṭapakṣigaṇākīrṇaḥ kandarāntarakūṭavān ,
dakṣiṇasyodadhestīre vindhyo'yamiti niścitaḥ.
7. hṛṣṭapakṣigaṇākīrṇaḥ kandarāntarakūṭavān
dakṣiṇasya udadheḥ tīre vindhyaḥ ayam iti niścitaḥ

kandarāntarakūṭavān ayam vindhyaḥ iti niścitaḥ
7. It was then ascertained that this was the Vindhya mountain, crowded with joyous flocks of birds, having peaks containing caves, and situated on the shore of the southern ocean.
आसीच्चात्राश्रमं पुण्यं सुरैरपि सुपूजितम् ।
ऋषिर्निशाकरो नाम यस्मिन्नुग्रतपाभवत् ॥८॥
8. āsīccātrāśramaṃ puṇyaṃ surairapi supūjitam ,
ṛṣirniśākaro nāma yasminnugratapābhavat.
8. āsīt ca atra āśramam puṇyam suraiḥ api supūjitam
ṛṣiḥ niśākaraḥ nāma yasmin ugratapāḥ abhavat
8. ca atra puṇyam supūjitam suraiḥ api āśramam āsīt
yasmin niśākaraḥ nāma ugratapāḥ ṛṣiḥ abhavat
8. And here there was a sacred hermitage, highly revered even by the gods, in which a sage named Nishakara, devoted to severe austerities (tapas), resided.
अष्टौ वर्षसहस्राणि तेनास्मिन्नृषिणा विना ।
वसतो मम धर्मज्ञाः स्वर्गते तु निशाकरे ॥९॥
9. aṣṭau varṣasahasrāṇi tenāsminnṛṣiṇā vinā ,
vasato mama dharmajñāḥ svargate tu niśākare.
9. aṣṭau varṣasahasrāṇi tena asmin ṛṣiṇā vinā
vasataḥ mama dharmajñāḥ svargate tu niśākare
9. dharmajñāḥ,
mama asmin tena ṛṣiṇā vinā vasataḥ,
niśākare svargate tu,
aṣṭau varṣasahasrāṇi
9. O knowers of natural law (dharma), eight thousand years have passed since I have been living here without that sage, after Nishakara (the Moon) ascended to heaven.
अवतीर्य च विन्ध्याग्रात् कृच्छ्रेण विषमाच्छनैः ।
तीक्ष्णदर्भां वसुमतीं दुःखेन पुनरागतः ॥१०॥
10. avatīrya ca vindhyāgrāt kṛcchreṇa viṣamācchanaiḥ ,
tīkṣṇadarbhāṃ vasumatīṃ duḥkhena punarāgataḥ.
10. avatīrya ca vindhyāgrāt kṛcchreṇa viṣamāt śanaiḥ
tīkṣṇadarbhāṁ vasumatīṁ duḥkhena punaḥ āgataḥ
10. ca (aham) vindhyāgrāt viṣamāt kṛcchreṇa śanaiḥ avatīrya,
tīkṣṇadarbhāṁ vasumatīṁ duḥkhena punaḥ āgataḥ
10. And having descended slowly and with great difficulty from the uneven summit of the Vindhya (mountain), I have returned painfully to the earth which is covered with sharp darbha grass.
तमृषिं द्रष्टु कामो ऽस्मि दुःखेनाभ्यागतो भृशम् ।
जटायुषा मया चैव बहुशो ऽभिगतो हि सः ॥११॥
11. tamṛṣiṃ draṣṭu kāmo'smi duḥkhenābhyāgato bhṛśam ,
jaṭāyuṣā mayā caiva bahuśo'bhigato hi saḥ.
11. tam ṛṣiṁ draṣṭuṁ kāmaḥ asmi duḥkhena abhyāgataḥ
bhṛśam jaṭāyuṣā mayā ca eva bahuśaḥ abhigataḥ hi saḥ
11. (aham) tam ṛṣiṁ draṣṭuṁ kāmaḥ asmi.
bhṛśam duḥkhena abhyāgataḥ (asmi).
hi saḥ jaṭāyuṣā mayā ca eva bahuśaḥ abhigataḥ
11. I am desirous of seeing that sage, having arrived here greatly distressed. Indeed, he was often visited by Jatayu and by me.
तस्याश्रमपदाभ्याशे ववुर्वाताः सुगन्धिनः ।
वृक्षो नापुष्पितः कश्चिदफलो वा न दृश्यते ॥१२॥
12. tasyāśramapadābhyāśe vavurvātāḥ sugandhinaḥ ,
vṛkṣo nāpuṣpitaḥ kaścidaphalo vā na dṛśyate.
12. tasya āśramapadābhyāśe vavuḥ vātāḥ sugandhinaḥ
vṛkṣaḥ na apuṣpitaḥ kaścit aphalaḥ vā na dṛśyate
12. tasya āśramapadābhyāśe sugandhinaḥ vātāḥ vavuḥ.
kaścit vṛkṣaḥ apuṣpitaḥ vā aphalaḥ na dṛśyate
12. Near his hermitage, fragrant winds blew. No tree was to be seen that was without blossoms or without fruit.
उपेत्य चाश्रमं पुण्यं वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रितः ।
द्रष्टुकामः प्रतीक्षे च भगवन्तं निशाकरम् ॥१३॥
13. upetya cāśramaṃ puṇyaṃ vṛkṣamūlamupāśritaḥ ,
draṣṭukāmaḥ pratīkṣe ca bhagavantaṃ niśākaram.
13. upetya ca āśramam puṇyam vṛkṣamūlam upāśritaḥ
draṣṭukāmaḥ pratīkṣe ca bhagavantam niśākaram
13. Having reached the sacred hermitage and taken shelter at the foot of a tree, I awaited the venerable moon, wishing to behold him.
अथापश्यमदूरस्थमृषिं ज्वलिततेजसं ।
कृताभिषेकं दुर्धर्षमुपावृत्तमुदङ्मुखम् ॥१४॥
14. athāpaśyamadūrasthamṛṣiṃ jvalitatejasaṃ ,
kṛtābhiṣekaṃ durdharṣamupāvṛttamudaṅmukham.
14. atha apaśyam adūrastham ṛṣim jvalitatejasam
kṛtābhiṣekam durdharṣam upāvṛttam udaṅmukham
14. Then, not far off, I saw a formidable (ṛṣi), blazing with splendor, who had performed his ritual bath and returned, facing north.
तमृक्षाः सृमरा व्याघ्राः सिंहा नागाः सरीसृपाः ।
परिवार्योपगच्छन्ति दातारं प्राणिनो यथा ॥१५॥
15. tamṛkṣāḥ sṛmarā vyāghrāḥ siṃhā nāgāḥ sarīsṛpāḥ ,
parivāryopagacchanti dātāraṃ prāṇino yathā.
15. tam ṛkṣāḥ sṛmarāḥ vyāghrāḥ siṃhāḥ nāgāḥ sarīsṛpāḥ
parivārya upagacchanti dātāram prāṇinaḥ yathā
15. Bears, wild yaks, tigers, lions, elephants, and reptiles approached him, having surrounded him, just as creatures approach a giver (dātāram).
ततः प्राप्तमृषिं ज्ञात्वा तानि सत्त्वानि वै ययुः ।
प्रविष्टे राजनि यथा सर्वं सामात्यकं बलम् ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ prāptamṛṣiṃ jñātvā tāni sattvāni vai yayuḥ ,
praviṣṭe rājani yathā sarvaṃ sāmātyakaṃ balam.
16. tataḥ prāptam ṛṣim jñātvā tāni sattvāni vai yayuḥ
praviṣṭe rājani yathā sarvam sāmātyakam balam
16. Then, realizing the (ṛṣi) had arrived, those creatures indeed departed, just as an entire army, accompanied by its ministers, disperses when the king has entered.
ऋषिस्तु दृष्ट्वा मां तुष्टः प्रविष्टश्चाश्रमं पुनः ।
मुहूर्तमात्रान्निष्क्रम्य ततः कार्यमपृच्छत ॥१७॥
17. ṛṣistu dṛṣṭvā māṃ tuṣṭaḥ praviṣṭaścāśramaṃ punaḥ ,
muhūrtamātrānniṣkramya tataḥ kāryamapṛcchata.
17. ṛṣiḥ tu dṛṣṭvā mām tuṣṭaḥ praviṣṭaḥ ca āśramam
punaḥ muhūrtamātrāt niṣkramya tataḥ kāryam apṛcchata
17. ṛṣiḥ tu mām dṛṣṭvā tuṣṭaḥ ca punaḥ āśramam praviṣṭaḥ.
muhūrtamātrāt niṣkramya tataḥ kāryam apṛcchata.
17. The sage, upon seeing me, was pleased and re-entered his hermitage. After just a moment, he emerged and then inquired about the reason for my presence.
सौम्य वैकल्यतां दृष्ट्वा रोंणां ते नावगम्यते ।
अग्निदग्धाविमौ पक्षौ त्वक् चैव व्रणिता तव ॥१८॥
18. saumya vaikalyatāṃ dṛṣṭvā roṃṇāṃ te nāvagamyate ,
agnidagdhāvimau pakṣau tvak caiva vraṇitā tava.
18. saumya vaikalyatām dṛṣṭvā roṇām te na avagamyate
agnidagdhau imau pakṣau tvak ca eva vraṇitā tava
18. saumya,
tava vaikalyatām dṛṣṭvā roṇām te na avagamyate.
imau pakṣau agnidagdhau,
ca tava tvak eva vraṇitā.
18. O gentle one, seeing your disabled condition, the nature of your wounds is not (fully) understood by you. These two wings of yours are burnt by fire, and your skin is also wounded.
द्वौ गृध्रौ दृष्टपूर्वौ मे मातरिश्वसमौ जवे ।
गृध्राणां चैव राजानौ भ्रातरौ कामरूपिणौ ॥१९॥
19. dvau gṛdhrau dṛṣṭapūrvau me mātariśvasamau jave ,
gṛdhrāṇāṃ caiva rājānau bhrātarau kāmarūpiṇau.
19. dvau gṛdhrau dṛṣṭapūrvau me mātariśvasamau jave
gṛdhrāṇām ca eva rājānau bhrātarau kāmarūpiṇau
19. me dvau gṛdhrau dṛṣṭapūrvau.
jave mātariśvasamau,
ca eva gṛdhrāṇām rājānau,
bhrātarau kāmarūpiṇau.
19. I have seen two vultures before, who were equal to the wind god (Mātariśvan) in speed, and indeed, they were the kings of vultures, two brothers capable of assuming any form they desired (kāmarūpiṇau).
ज्येष्ठस्त्वं तु च संपातिर्जटायुरनुजस्तव ।
मानुषं रूपमास्थाय गृह्णीतां चरणौ मम ॥२०॥
20. jyeṣṭhastvaṃ tu ca saṃpātirjaṭāyuranujastava ,
mānuṣaṃ rūpamāsthāya gṛhṇītāṃ caraṇau mama.
20. jyeṣṭhaḥ tvam tu ca sampātiḥ jaṭāyuḥ anujaḥ tava
mānuṣam rūpam āsthāya gṛhṇītām caraṇau mama
20. tvam tu jyeṣṭhaḥ sampātiḥ ca.
tava anujaḥ jaṭāyuḥ.
mānuṣam rūpam āsthāya mama caraṇau gṛhṇītām.
20. You are indeed Sampāti, the elder, and Jaṭāyu is your younger brother. Assuming a human form, let both of you touch my feet.
किं ते व्याधिसमुत्थानं पक्षयोः पतनं कथम् ।
दण्डो वायं धृतः केन सर्वमाख्याहि पृच्छतः ॥२१॥
21. kiṃ te vyādhisamutthānaṃ pakṣayoḥ patanaṃ katham ,
daṇḍo vāyaṃ dhṛtaḥ kena sarvamākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ.
21. kim te vyādhi-samutthānam pakṣayoḥ patanam katham
daṇḍaḥ vā ayam dhṛtaḥ kena sarvam ākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ
21. te vyādhi-samutthānam kim pakṣayoḥ patanam katham
vā ayam daṇḍaḥ kena dhṛtaḥ pṛcchataḥ sarvam ākhyāhi
21. What is the cause of your affliction? How did your wings fall off? And by whom was this staff wielded? Please tell me everything, as I inquire.
