उक्तवाक्यं तु राजानं कृपया कुशिकात्मजः ।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं साक्षाच्चण्डालरूपिणम् ॥१॥

1. With compassion, Viśvāmitra (the son of Kuśika) spoke sweet words to the king, who had just spoken and was directly in the form of an outcaste.
इक्ष्वाको स्वागतं वत्स जानामि त्वां सुधार्मिकम् ।
शरणं ते भविष्यामि मा भैषीर्नृपपुंगव ॥२॥
2. ikṣvāko svāgataṃ vatsa jānāmi tvāṃ sudhārmikam ,
śaraṇaṃ te bhaviṣyāmi mā bhaiṣīrnṛpapuṃgava.

śaraṇam te bhaviṣyāmi mā bhaiṣīḥ nṛpapuṅgava

2. O Ikṣvāku, dear child, welcome! I know you to be very devoted to natural law (dharma). I will be your refuge; do not be afraid, O best of kings!
अहमामन्त्रये सर्वान्महर्षीन्पुण्यकर्मणः ।
यज्ञसाह्यकरान् राजंस्ततो यक्ष्यसि निर्वृतः ॥३॥
3. ahamāmantraye sarvānmaharṣīnpuṇyakarmaṇaḥ ,
yajñasāhyakarān rājaṃstato yakṣyasi nirvṛtaḥ.
3. aham āmantraye sarvān maharṣīn puṇyakarmaṇaḥ
yajñasāhyakarān rājan tataḥ yakṣyasi nirvṛtaḥ
3. rājan aham sarvān puṇyakarmaṇaḥ yajñasāhyakarān

3. O King, I shall invite all the great sages, who are of meritorious deeds and who assist in the ritual (yajña). Then you will perform the ritual (yajña) with contentment.
गुरुशापकृतं रूपं यदिदं त्वयि वर्तते ।
अनेन सह रूपेण सशरीरो गमिष्यसि ॥४॥
4. guruśāpakṛtaṃ rūpaṃ yadidaṃ tvayi vartate ,
anena saha rūpeṇa saśarīro gamiṣyasi.
4. guruśāpakṛtam rūpam yat idam tvayi vartate
anena saha rūpeṇa saśarīraḥ gamiṣyasi
4. yat idam guruśāpakṛtam rūpam tvayi vartate

4. This form, which is present in you, created by your guru's curse – with this very form and with your physical body, you will go.
हस्तप्राप्तमहं मन्ये स्वर्गं तव नरेश्वर ।
यस्त्वं कौशिकमागम्य शरण्यं शरणं गतः ॥५॥
5. hastaprāptamahaṃ manye svargaṃ tava nareśvara ,
yastvaṃ kauśikamāgamya śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ.
5. hastaprāptam aham manye svargam tava nareśvara
yaḥ tvam kauśikam āgamya śaraṇyam śaraṇam gataḥ
5. nareśvara aham manye tava svargam hastaprāptam
yaḥ tvam śaraṇyam kauśikam āgamya śaraṇam gataḥ
5. O King (nareśvara), I consider heaven to be within your grasp, since you have sought refuge with Kauśika, who is indeed a protector worthy of refuge.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः पुत्रान्परमधार्मिकान् ।
व्यादिदेश महाप्राज्ञान्यज्ञसंभारकारणात् ॥६॥
6. evamuktvā mahātejāḥ putrānparamadhārmikān ,
vyādideśa mahāprājñānyajñasaṃbhārakāraṇāt.
6. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ putrān paramadhārmikān
vyādideśa mahāprājñān yajñasaṃbhārakāraṇāt
6. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ paramadhārmikān mahāprājñān

6. Having spoken thus, the greatly effulgent one instructed his highly righteous (dharma) and very wise sons for the sake of the materials for the Vedic ritual (yajña).
सर्वाञ् शिष्यान्
समाहूय वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥७॥
7. sarvāñ śiṣyān samāhūya
vākyametaduvāca ha.

7. Having summoned all his disciples, he spoke these words.
सर्वानृषिवरान् वत्सा आनयध्वं ममाज्ञया ।
सशिष्यान् सुहृदश्चैव सर्त्विजः सुबहुश्रुतान् ॥८॥
8. sarvānṛṣivarān vatsā ānayadhvaṃ mamājñayā ,
saśiṣyān suhṛdaścaiva sartvijaḥ subahuśrutān.
8. sarvān ṛṣivarān vatsāḥ ānayadhvam mama ājñayā
saśiṣyān suhṛdaḥ ca eva sartvijaḥ subahuśrutān
8. vatsāḥ mama ājñayā sarvān saśiṣyān suhṛdaḥ ca
eva sartvijaḥ subahuśrutān ṛṣivarān ānayadhvam
8. O children, by my command, bring all the eminent sages, accompanied by their disciples, their friends, and their priests, who are all highly learned.
यदन्यो वचनं ब्रूयान्मद्वाक्यबलचोदितः ।
तत् सर्वमखिलेनोक्तं ममाख्येयमनादृतम् ॥९॥
9. yadanyo vacanaṃ brūyānmadvākyabalacoditaḥ ,
tat sarvamakhilenoktaṃ mamākhyeyamanādṛtam.
9. yat anyaḥ vacanam brūyāt madvākyabalacoditaḥ
tat sarvam akhilena uktam mama ākhyeyam anādṛtam
9. yat anyaḥ madvākyabalacoditaḥ vacanam brūyāt
tat sarvam akhilena uktam mama anādṛtam ākhyeyam
9. Whatever another person might say, being impelled by the power of my words, all of that, even if completely spoken, is to be considered by me as unheeded.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दिशो जग्मुस्तदाज्ञया ।
आजग्मुरथ देशेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यो ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥१०॥
10. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā diśo jagmustadājñayā ,
ājagmuratha deśebhyaḥ sarvebhyo brahmavādinaḥ.
10. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā diśaḥ jagmuḥ tadājñayā
ājagmuḥ atha deśebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ brahmavādinaḥ
10. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā tadājñayā diśaḥ jagmuḥ
atha sarvebhyaḥ deśebhyaḥ brahmavādinaḥ ājagmuḥ
10. Having heard his words, they departed in various directions according to his command. Then, the knowers of brahman (brahman) arrived from all lands.
ते च शिष्याः समागम्य मुनिं ज्वलिततेजसं ।
ऊचुश्च वचनं सर्वे सर्वेषां ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ॥११॥
11. te ca śiṣyāḥ samāgamya muniṃ jvalitatejasaṃ ,
ūcuśca vacanaṃ sarve sarveṣāṃ brahmavādinām.
11. te ca śiṣyāḥ samāgamya munim jvalitatejasam
ūcuḥ ca vacanam sarve sarveṣām brahmavādinām
11. ca te śiṣyāḥ jvalitatejasam munim samāgamya
sarve ca sarveṣām brahmavādinām vacanam ūcuḥ
11. And those disciples, having gathered before the sage blazing with splendor, all spoke the words of all the knowers of brahman (brahman).
श्रुत्वा ते वचनं सर्वे समायान्ति द्विजातयः ।
सर्वदेशेषु चागच्छन् वर्जयित्वा महोदयम् ॥१२॥
12. śrutvā te vacanaṃ sarve samāyānti dvijātayaḥ ,
sarvadeśeṣu cāgacchan varjayitvā mahodayam.
12. śrutvā te vacanam sarve samāyānti dvijātayaḥ
sarvadeśeṣu ca āgacchan varjayitvā mahodayam
12. śrutvā te vacanam sarve dvijātayaḥ samāyānti
ca sarvadeśeṣu varjayitvā mahodayam āgacchan
12. Having heard those words, all the twice-born (dvijāti) arrived. And they came from all lands, excluding Mahodaya.
वासिष्ठं तच्छतं सर्वं क्रोधपर्याकुलाक्षरम् ।
यदाह वचनं सर्वं शृणु त्वं मुनिपुंगव ॥१३॥
13. vāsiṣṭhaṃ tacchataṃ sarvaṃ krodhaparyākulākṣaram ,
yadāha vacanaṃ sarvaṃ śṛṇu tvaṃ munipuṃgava.
13. vāsiṣṭham tat śatam sarvam krodhaparyākulākṣaram
yat āha vacanam sarvam śṛṇu tvam munipuṅgava
13. tvam munipuṅgava vāsiṣṭham tat sarvam
krodhaparyākulākṣaram yat vacanam sarvam āha śṛṇu
13. O best among sages, listen to all those hundred statements of Vasiṣṭha, which he spoke with words agitated by anger.
क्षत्रियो याजको यस्य चण्डालस्य विशेषतः ।
कथं सदसि भोक्तारो हविस्तस्य सुरर्षयः ॥१४॥
14. kṣatriyo yājako yasya caṇḍālasya viśeṣataḥ ,
kathaṃ sadasi bhoktāro havistasya surarṣayaḥ.
14. kṣatriyaḥ yājakaḥ yasya caṇḍālasya viśeṣataḥ
katham sadasi bhoktāraḥ haviḥ tasya surarṣayaḥ
14. yasya caṇḍālasya viśeṣataḥ kṣatriyaḥ yājakaḥ
tasya haviḥ sadasi surarṣayaḥ katham bhoktāraḥ
14. How can the divine sages (surarṣayaḥ) in an assembly eat the offering (havis) of a person for whom a kṣatriya serves as the sacrificing priest (yājakaḥ), especially if that person is an outcaste (caṇḍāla)?
ब्राह्मणा वा महात्मानो भुक्त्वा चण्डालभोजनम् ।
कथं स्वर्गं गमिष्यन्ति विश्वामित्रेण पालिताः ॥१५॥
15. brāhmaṇā vā mahātmāno bhuktvā caṇḍālabhojanam ,
kathaṃ svargaṃ gamiṣyanti viśvāmitreṇa pālitāḥ.
15. brāhmaṇāḥ vā mahātmānaḥ bhuktvā caṇḍālabhojanam
katham svargam gamiṣyanti viśvāmitreṇa pālitāḥ
15. mahātmānaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ vā caṇḍālabhojanam bhuktvā
viśvāmitreṇa pālitāḥ katham svargam gamiṣyanti
15. Or, how will even great-souled Brahmins (brāhmaṇāḥ), having eaten the food of an outcaste (caṇḍālabhojanam), go to heaven while being protected by Viśvāmitra?
एतद्वचनं नैष्ठुर्यमूचुः संरक्तलोचनाः ।
वासिष्ठा मुनिशार्दूल सर्वे ते समहोदयाः ॥१६॥
16. etadvacanaṃ naiṣṭhuryamūcuḥ saṃraktalocanāḥ ,
vāsiṣṭhā muniśārdūla sarve te samahodayāḥ.
16. etat vacanam naiṣṭhuryam ūcuḥ saṃraktalocanāḥ
vāsiṣṭhāḥ muniśārdūla sarve te samahodayāḥ
16. muniśārdūla saṃraktalocanāḥ te sarve vāsiṣṭhāḥ
samahodayāḥ etat naiṣṭhuryam vacanam ūcuḥ
16. O tiger among sages (muniśārdūla), all those Vasiṣṭhas, their eyes reddened, and endowed with great prosperity, spoke these harsh words.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वेषां मुनिपुंगवः ।
क्रोधसंरक्तनयनः सरोषमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā sarveṣāṃ munipuṃgavaḥ ,
krodhasaṃraktanayanaḥ saroṣamidamabravīt.
17. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā sarveṣām munipuṅgavaḥ
krodhasaṃraktanayanaḥ saroṣam idam abravīt
17. munipuṅgavaḥ sarveṣām teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā
krodhasaṃraktanayanaḥ saroṣam idam abravīt
17. Having heard those words from all of them, the foremost sage, his eyes red with rage, spoke this angrily.
यद्दूषयन्त्यदुष्टं मां तप उग्रं समास्थितम् ।
भस्मीभूता दुरात्मानो भविष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥१८॥
18. yaddūṣayantyaduṣṭaṃ māṃ tapa ugraṃ samāsthitam ,
bhasmībhūtā durātmāno bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ.
18. yat dūṣayanti aduṣṭam mām tapaḥ ugram samāsthitam
bhasmībhūtāḥ durātmānaḥ bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
18. yat aduṣṭam ugram tapaḥ samāsthitam mām dūṣayanti
durātmānaḥ bhasmībhūtāḥ bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
18. Because they condemn me, an innocent person engaged in severe penance (tapas), those wicked souls will undoubtedly be reduced to ashes.
अद्य ते कालपाशेन नीता वैवस्वतक्षयम् ।
सप्तजातिशतान्येव मृतपाः सन्तु सर्वशः ॥१९॥
19. adya te kālapāśena nītā vaivasvatakṣayam ,
saptajātiśatānyeva mṛtapāḥ santu sarvaśaḥ.
19. adya te kālapaśena nītāḥ vaivasvatakṣayam
saptajātiśatāni eva mṛtapāḥ santu sarvaśaḥ
19. adya te kālapaśena vaivasvatakṣayam nītāḥ
saptajātiśatāni eva sarvaśaḥ mṛtapāḥ santu
19. Today, they are led by the noose of Time (kālapaśa) to the realm of Yama. For seven hundred births, let them verily be entirely feeders on the dead.
श्वमांसनियताहारा मुष्टिका नाम निर्घृणाः ।
विकृताश्च विरूपाश्च लोकाननुचरन्त्विमान् ॥२०॥
20. śvamāṃsaniyatāhārā muṣṭikā nāma nirghṛṇāḥ ,
vikṛtāśca virūpāśca lokānanucarantvimān.
20. śvamāṃsaniyatāhārāḥ muṣṭikāḥ nāma nirghṛṇāḥ
vikṛtāḥ ca virūpāḥ ca lokān anucarantu imān
20. nāma muṣṭikāḥ śvamāṃsaniyatāhārāḥ nirghṛṇāḥ
vikṛtāḥ ca virūpāḥ ca imān lokān anucarantu
20. Let those merciless and cruel ones, named Muṣṭikas, whose fixed diet is dog-flesh, and who are deformed and hideous, wander about these worlds.
महोदयश्च दुर्बुद्धिर्मामदूष्यं ह्यदूषयत् ।
दूषिटः सर्वलोकेषु निषादत्वं गमिष्यति ॥२१॥
21. mahodayaśca durbuddhirmāmadūṣyaṃ hyadūṣayat ,
dūṣiṭaḥ sarvalokeṣu niṣādatvaṃ gamiṣyati.
21. mahodayaḥ ca durbuddhiḥ mām adūṣyam hi adūṣayat
dūṣitaḥ sarvalokeṣu niṣādatvam gamiṣyati
21. durbuddhiḥ mahodayaḥ ca adūṣyam mām hi adūṣayat
sarvalokeṣu dūṣitaḥ niṣādatvam gamiṣyati
21. And that great, yet wicked person indeed blamed me, who was faultless. Being condemned by all people, he will attain the state of a Niṣāda (a low-caste hunter).
प्राणातिपातनिरतो निरनुक्रोशतां गतः ।
दीर्घकालं मम क्रोधाद्दुर्गतिं वर्तयिष्यति ॥२२॥
22. prāṇātipātanirato niranukrośatāṃ gataḥ ,
dīrghakālaṃ mama krodhāddurgatiṃ vartayiṣyati.

dīrghakālam mama krodhāt durgatim vartayiṣyati
22. prāṇātipātanirataḥ niranukrośatām gataḥ mama

22. Engaged in taking lives, and having become merciless, he will, due to my anger, endure a miserable fate for a long time.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
विरराम महातेजा ऋषिमध्ये महामुनिः ॥२३॥
23. etāvaduktvā vacanaṃ viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
virarāma mahātejā ṛṣimadhye mahāmuniḥ.
23. etāvat uktvā vacanam viśvāmitraḥ mahātapāḥ
virarāma mahātejāḥ ṛṣimadhye mahāmuniḥ
23. mahātapāḥ mahātejāḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ
etāvat vacanam uktvā ṛṣimadhye virarāma
23. Having uttered these words, Viśvāmitra, the great sage (mahāmuni) of immense asceticism (tapas) and great splendor, ceased speaking among the other sages.
