ज्ञातिदासी यतो जाता कैकेय्यास्तु सहोषिता ।
प्रासादं चन्द्रसंकाशमारुरोह यदृच्छया ॥१॥
1. jñātidāsī yato jātā kaikeyyāstu sahoṣitā ,
prāsādaṃ candrasaṃkāśamāruroha yadṛcchayā.

1. Kaikeyī's maidservant, who was also a relative and had resided with her, ascended the palace, which shone like the moon, by chance.
सिक्तराजपथां कृत्स्नां प्रकीर्णकमलोत्पलाम् ।
अयोध्यां मन्थरा तस्मात् प्रासादादन्ववैक्षत ॥२॥
2. siktarājapathāṃ kṛtsnāṃ prakīrṇakamalotpalām ,
ayodhyāṃ mantharā tasmāt prāsādādanvavaikṣata.

2. From that palace, Manthara gazed down upon the entire city of Ayodhya, where the royal roads had been sprinkled (with water) and lotuses and water-lilies were scattered.
पताकाभिर्वरार्हाभिर्ध्वजैश्च समलंकृताम् ।
सिक्तां चन्दनतोयैश्च शिरःस्नातजनैर्वृताम् ॥३॥
3. patākābhirvarārhābhirdhvajaiśca samalaṃkṛtām ,
siktāṃ candanatoyaiśca śiraḥsnātajanairvṛtām.

3. The city (Ayodhya) was adorned with magnificent banners and flags, sprinkled with sandalwood water, and bustling with people who had just bathed their heads.
अविदूरे स्थितां दृष्ट्वा धात्रीं पप्रच्छ मन्थरा ।
उत्तमेनाभिसंयुक्ता हर्षेणार्थपरा सती ॥४॥
4. avidūre sthitāṃ dṛṣṭvā dhātrīṃ papraccha mantharā ,
uttamenābhisaṃyuktā harṣeṇārthaparā satī.
4. avidūre sthitām dṛṣṭvā dhātrīm papraccha mantharā
uttamena abhisaṃyuktā harṣeṇa arthaparā satī

4. Manthara, who was intent on her purpose, seeing the nurse standing nearby who was filled with supreme joy, asked her.
राममाता धनं किं नु जनेभ्यः संप्रयच्छति ।
अतिमात्रं प्रहर्षो ऽयं किं जनस्य च शंस मे ।
कारयिष्यति किं वापि संप्रहृष्टो महीपतिः ॥५॥
5. rāmamātā dhanaṃ kiṃ nu janebhyaḥ saṃprayacchati ,
atimātraṃ praharṣo'yaṃ kiṃ janasya ca śaṃsa me ,
kārayiṣyati kiṃ vāpi saṃprahṛṣṭo mahīpatiḥ.
5. rāmamātā dhanam kim nu janebhyaḥ
saṃprayacchati atimātram praharṣaḥ ayam
kim janasya ca śaṃsa me kārayiṣyati
kim vā api saṃprahr̥ṣṭaḥ mahīpatiḥ
5. rāmamātā kim nu dhanam janebhyaḥ saṃprayacchati? ayam atimātram praharṣaḥ janasya kim? ca me śaṃsa.
saṃprahr̥ṣṭaḥ mahīpatiḥ kim vā api kārayiṣyati?
5. Why is Rama's mother distributing wealth to the people? What is this excessive joy among the people, and tell me: what else will the greatly delighted king cause to be done?
विदीर्यमाणा हर्षेण धात्री परमया मुदा ।
आचचक्षे ऽथ कुब्जायै भूयसीं राघवे श्रियम् ॥६॥
6. vidīryamāṇā harṣeṇa dhātrī paramayā mudā ,
ācacakṣe'tha kubjāyai bhūyasīṃ rāghave śriyam.

6. The nurse, bursting with joy and supreme delight, then told the hunchback (Manthara) of the abundant prosperity concerning Raghava (Rama).
श्वः पुष्येण जितक्रोधं यौवराज्येन राघवम् ।
राजा दशरथो राममभिषेचयितानघम् ॥७॥
7. śvaḥ puṣyeṇa jitakrodhaṃ yauvarājyena rāghavam ,
rājā daśaratho rāmamabhiṣecayitānagham.

rājā daśarathaḥ rāmam abhiṣecayitā anagham
7. rājā daśarathaḥ,

7. Tomorrow, on the day of Puṣya, King Dasharatha will consecrate Rama, the blameless Raghava who has conquered anger, as heir-apparent.
धात्र्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा कुब्जा क्षिप्रममर्षिता ।
कैलास शिखराकारात् प्रासादादवरोहत ॥८॥
8. dhātryāstu vacanaṃ śrutvā kubjā kṣipramamarṣitā ,
kailāsa śikharākārāt prāsādādavarohata.

8. Hearing the words of the nurse, the hunchback (Kubjā) quickly became enraged. She descended from the palace, which resembled the peak of Mount Kailāsa.
सा दह्यमाना कोपेन मन्थरा पापदर्शिनी ।
शयानामेत्य कैकेयीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. sā dahyamānā kopena mantharā pāpadarśinī ,
śayānāmetya kaikeyīmidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

9. Burning with rage (kopa), that Mantharā, whose vision was tainted by evil, approached Kaikeyī, who was lying down, and spoke these words.
उत्तिष्ठ मूढे किं शेषे भयं त्वामभिवर्तते ।
उपप्लुतमहौघेन किमात्मानं न बुध्यसे ॥१०॥
10. uttiṣṭha mūḍhe kiṃ śeṣe bhayaṃ tvāmabhivartate ,
upaplutamahaughena kimātmānaṃ na budhyase.
10. uttiṣṭha mūḍhe kim śeṣe bhayam tvām abhivartate
upaplutam mahaughena kim ātmānam na budhyase
10. mūḍhe,
uttiṣṭha! kim śeṣe? bhayam tvām abhivartate.
mahaughena upaplutam (satī) kim ātmānam na budhyase?
10. Arise, foolish one! Why do you sleep? Fear is approaching you. Submerged as you are by a great flood (of troubles), why do you not recognize your own self (ātman)?
अनिष्टे सुभगाकारे सौभाग्येन विकत्थसे ।
चलं हि तव सौभाग्यं नद्यः स्रोत इवोष्णगे ॥११॥
11. aniṣṭe subhagākāre saubhāgyena vikatthase ,
calaṃ hi tava saubhāgyaṃ nadyaḥ srota ivoṣṇage.
11. aniṣṭe subhagākāre saubhāgyena vikatthase calam
hi tava saubhāgyam nadyaḥ srotaḥ iva uṣṇage
11. aniṣṭe subhagākāre,
saubhāgyena vikatthase.
hi tava saubhāgyam calam; uṣṇage nadyaḥ srotaḥ iva.
11. O ill-fated one (aniṣṭe), though you appear fortunate, you boast about your good fortune. Indeed, your good fortune is fickle, like the currents of rivers in the summer season.
एवमुक्ता तु कैकेयी रुष्टया परुषं वचः ।
कुब्जया पापदर्शिन्या विषादमगमत् परम् ॥१२॥
12. evamuktā tu kaikeyī ruṣṭayā paruṣaṃ vacaḥ ,
kubjayā pāpadarśinyā viṣādamagamat param.
12. evam uktā tu kaikeyī ruṣṭayā paruṣam vacaḥ
kubjayā pāpadarśinyā viṣādam agamat param
12. kaikeyī tu ruṣṭayā pāpadarśinyā kubjayā paruṣam vacaḥ evam uktā,

12. Kaikeyī, thus spoken to with harsh words by the angry, evil-minded hunchback, fell into great despondency.
कैकेयी त्वब्रवीत् कुब्जां कच्चित् क्षेमं न मन्थरे ।
विषण्णवदनां हि त्वां लक्षये भृशदुःखिताम् ॥१३॥
13. kaikeyī tvabravīt kubjāṃ kaccit kṣemaṃ na manthare ,
viṣaṇṇavadanāṃ hi tvāṃ lakṣaye bhṛśaduḥkhitām.
13. kaikeyī tu abravīt kubjām kaccit kṣemam na manthare
viṣaṇṇavadanām hi tvām lakṣaye bhṛśaduḥkhitām
13. kaikeyī tu kubjām abravīt.
manthare,
kaccit kṣemam na? hi (aham) tvām viṣaṇṇavadanām bhṛśaduḥkhitām lakṣaye.
13. Then Kaikeyī said to the hunchback, 'O Mantharā, I hope you are well? Indeed, I see you with a dejected face, appearing greatly distressed.'
मन्थरा तु वचः श्रुत्वा कैकेय्या मधुराक्षरम् ।
उवाच क्रोधसंयुक्ता वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदा ॥१४॥
14. mantharā tu vacaḥ śrutvā kaikeyyā madhurākṣaram ,
uvāca krodhasaṃyuktā vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradā.
14. mantharā tu vacaḥ śrutvā kaikeyīyā madhurākṣaram
uvāca krodhasaṃyuktā vākyam vākyaviśāradā
14. tu vākyaviśāradā mantharā kaikeyīyā madhurākṣaram vacaḥ śrutvā krodhasaṃyuktā vākyam uvāca.
14. However, Mantharā, who was skilled in speech, upon hearing Kaikeyī's sweet-worded address, spoke words imbued with anger.
सा विषण्णतरा भूत्वा कुब्जा तस्या हितैषिणी ।
विषादयन्ती प्रोवाच भेदयन्ती च राघवम् ॥१५॥
15. sā viṣaṇṇatarā bhūtvā kubjā tasyā hitaiṣiṇī ,
viṣādayantī provāca bhedayantī ca rāghavam.
15. sā viṣaṇṇatarā bhūtvā kubjā tasyāḥ hitaiṣiṇī
viṣādayantī provāca bhedayantī ca rāghavam
15. sā tasyāḥ hitaiṣiṇī kubjā viṣaṇṇatarā bhūtvā,
विषादयन्ती च राघवम् भेदयन्ती प्रोवाच।
15. That hunchback, her well-wisher, became even more dejected, and then spoke words that caused sadness and sowed discord concerning Rāghava (Rāma).
अक्षेमं सुमहद्देवि प्रवृत्तं त्वद्विनाशनम् ।
रामं दशरथो राजा यौवराज्ये ऽभिषेक्ष्यति ॥१६॥
16. akṣemaṃ sumahaddevi pravṛttaṃ tvadvināśanam ,
rāmaṃ daśaratho rājā yauvarājye'bhiṣekṣyati.
16. akṣemam sumahat devi pravṛttam tvad-vināśanam
rāmam daśarathaḥ rājā yauvarājye abhiṣekṣyati
16. devi sumahat akṣemam tvadvināśanam pravṛttam
rājā daśarathaḥ rāmam yauvarājye abhiṣekṣyati
16. O goddess, a great misfortune has begun, leading to your ruin. King Daśaratha will consecrate Rāma as the crown prince.
सास्म्यगाधे भये मग्ना दुःखशोकसमन्विता ।
दह्यमानानलेनेव त्वद्धितार्थमिहागता ॥१७॥
17. sāsmyagādhe bhaye magnā duḥkhaśokasamanvitā ,
dahyamānānaleneva tvaddhitārthamihāgatā.
17. sā asmi agādhe bhaye magnā duḥkha-śoka-samanvitā
dahyamānā analena iva tvad-hita-artham iha āgatā
17. (aham) sā asmi agādhe bhaye duḥkhaśokasammanvitā magnā
(aham) analena iva dahyamānā tvadhhitārtham iha āgatā
17. I am immersed in profound fear, beset by sorrow and grief. I have come here for your well-being, feeling as if I am being consumed by fire.
तव दुःखेन कैकेयि मम दुःखं महद्भवेत् ।
त्वद्वृद्धौ मम वृद्धिश्च भवेदत्र न संशयः ॥१८॥
18. tava duḥkhena kaikeyi mama duḥkhaṃ mahadbhavet ,
tvadvṛddhau mama vṛddhiśca bhavedatra na saṃśayaḥ.
18. tava duḥkhena kaikeyī mama duḥkham mahat bhavet
tvad-vṛddhau mama vṛddhiḥ ca bhavet atra na saṃśayaḥ
18. kaikeyī tava duḥkhena mama mahat duḥkham bhavet ca
tvadvṛddhau atra mama vṛddhiḥ bhavet na saṃśayaḥ
18. O Kaikeyī, if you suffer distress, I too would suffer great sorrow. And in your prosperity, my own prosperity would surely lie; there is no doubt about this.
नराधिपकुले जाता महिषी त्वं महीपतेः ।
उग्रत्वं राजधर्माणां कथं देवि न बुध्यसे ॥१९॥
19. narādhipakule jātā mahiṣī tvaṃ mahīpateḥ ,
ugratvaṃ rājadharmāṇāṃ kathaṃ devi na budhyase.
19. nara-adhipa-kule jātā mahiṣī tvam mahīpateḥ
ugratvam rāja-dharmāṇām katham devi na budhyase
19. devi tvam narādhipakule jātā mahīpateḥ mahiṣī
(asi) rājadarmāṇām ugratvam katham na budhyase
19. Born in a royal lineage, you are the queen of a great monarch. O goddess, how is it that you do not comprehend the stern nature of the principles of kingship (dharma)?
धर्मवादी शठो भर्ता श्लक्ष्णवादी च दारुणः ।
शुद्धभावे न जानीषे तेनैवमतिसंधिता ॥२०॥
20. dharmavādī śaṭho bhartā ślakṣṇavādī ca dāruṇaḥ ,
śuddhabhāve na jānīṣe tenaivamatisaṃdhitā.
20. dharma-vādī śaṭhaḥ bhartā ślakṣṇa-vādī ca dāruṇaḥ
śuddha-bhāve na jānīṣe tena eva ati-saṃdhitā
20. bhartā dharma-vādī śaṭhaḥ ca ślakṣṇa-vādī dāruṇaḥ (asti).
śuddha-bhāve (tvam tam) na jānīṣe.
tena eva (tvam) ati-saṃdhitā (asi).
20. Your husband, who speaks of natural law (dharma) yet is deceitful, and who speaks softly yet is cruel, you, with your pure nature, do not recognize him. Because of this, you have been completely outwitted.
उपस्थितं प्रयुञ्जानस्त्वयि सान्त्वमनर्थकम् ।
अर्थेनैवाद्य ते भर्ता कौसल्यां योजयिष्यति ॥२१॥
21. upasthitaṃ prayuñjānastvayi sāntvamanarthakam ,
arthenaivādya te bhartā kausalyāṃ yojayiṣyati.
21. upasthitam prayuñjānaḥ tvayi sāntvam anarthakam
arthena eva adya te bhartā kausalyām yojayiṣyati
21. (Your) bhartā (now) adya upasthitam anarthakam sāntvam tvayi prayuñjānaḥ (san) arthena eva kausalyām yojayiṣyati.
21. Your husband is employing meaningless conciliatory words towards you right now. Today, your husband will ally himself with Kaushalya solely for his own benefit.
अपवाह्य स दुष्टात्मा भरतं तव बन्धुषु ।
काल्यं स्थापयिता रामं राज्ये निहतकण्टके ॥२२॥
22. apavāhya sa duṣṭātmā bharataṃ tava bandhuṣu ,
kālyaṃ sthāpayitā rāmaṃ rājye nihatakaṇṭake.
22. apavāhya saḥ duṣṭa-ātmā bharatam tava bandhuṣu
kālyam sthāpayitā rāmam rājye nihata-kaṇṭake
22. saḥ duṣṭa-ātmā tava bandhuṣu bharatam apavāhya kālyam nihata-kaṇṭake rājye rāmam sthāpayitā.
22. That wicked individual, having sent Bharata to your relatives, will tomorrow install Rama in a kingdom free of adversaries.
शत्रुः पतिप्रवादेन मात्रेव हितकाम्यया ।
आशीविष इवाङ्केन बाले परिधृतस्त्वया ॥२३॥
23. śatruḥ patipravādena mātreva hitakāmyayā ,
āśīviṣa ivāṅkena bāle paridhṛtastvayā.
23. śatruḥ pati-pravādena mātrā iva hita-kāmyayā
āśī-viṣaḥ iva aṅkena bāle paridhṛtaḥ tvayā
23. bāle,
śatruḥ pati-pravādena mātrā iva hita-kāmyayā āśī-viṣaḥ iva aṅkena tvayā paridhṛtaḥ (asti).
23. O innocent one, that enemy, under the guise of being your husband and with a desire for your welfare like a mother's, has been cherished by you on your lap just like a venomous serpent.
यथा हि कुर्यात् सर्पो वा शत्रुर्वा प्रत्युपेक्षितः ।
राज्ञा दशरथेनाद्य सपुत्रा त्वं तथा कृता ॥२४॥
24. yathā hi kuryāt sarpo vā śatrurvā pratyupekṣitaḥ ,
rājñā daśarathenādya saputrā tvaṃ tathā kṛtā.
24. yathā hi kuryāt sarpaḥ vā śatruḥ vā pratyupekṣitaḥ
rājñā daśarathena adya saputrā tvam tathā kṛtā
24. yathā hi pratyupekṣitaḥ sarpaḥ vā śatruḥ vā kuryāt
tathā tvam saputrā adya rājñā daśarathena kṛtā
24. Just as a neglected snake or enemy would act, so too have you, along with your son, been treated by King Dasharatha today.
पापेनानृतसान्त्वेन बाले नित्यं सुखोचिते ।
रामं स्थापयता राज्ये सानुबन्धा हता ह्यसि ॥२५॥
25. pāpenānṛtasāntvena bāle nityaṃ sukhocite ,
rāmaṃ sthāpayatā rājye sānubandhā hatā hyasi.
25. pāpena anṛtasāntvena bāle nityam sukhocite
rāmam sthāpayatā rājye sānubandhā hatā hi asi
25. bāle nityam sukhocite hi asi sānubandhā hatā
pāpena anṛtasāntvena rāmam rājye sthāpayatā
25. O naive one (bālā), always accustomed to comfort, you have indeed been destroyed, along with your family and dependants (sānubandhā), by that sinful man whose soothing words were false, by his action of establishing Rama in the kingdom.
सा प्राप्तकालं कैकेयि क्षिप्रं कुरु हितं तव ।
त्रायस्व पुत्रमात्मानं मां च विस्मयदर्शने ॥२६॥
26. sā prāptakālaṃ kaikeyi kṣipraṃ kuru hitaṃ tava ,
trāyasva putramātmānaṃ māṃ ca vismayadarśane.
26. sā prāptakālam kaikeyi kṣipram kuru hitam tava
trāyasva putram ātmānam mām ca vismayadarśane
26. sā vismayadarśane kaikeyi prāptakālam tava hitam
kṣipram kuru putram ātmānam mām ca trāyasva
26. O Kaikeyī, whose appearance causes astonishment, quickly act for your own good now that the opportune moment has arrived. Protect your son, your own self (ātman), and me.
मन्थराया वचः श्रुत्वा शयनात् सा शुभानना ।
एकमाभरणं तस्यै कुब्जायै प्रददौ शुभम् ॥२७॥
27. mantharāyā vacaḥ śrutvā śayanāt sā śubhānanā ,
ekamābharaṇaṃ tasyai kubjāyai pradadau śubham.
27. mantharāyāḥ vacaḥ śrutvā śayanāt sā śubhānanā
ekam ābharaṇam tasyai kubjāyai pradadau śubham
27. mantharāyāḥ vacaḥ śrutvā sā śubhānanā śayanāt
tasyai kubjāyai ekam śubham ābharaṇam pradadau
27. Having heard Manthara's words, she of the beautiful face (Kaikeyī), from her couch, gave one auspicious ornament to that hunchbacked woman.
दत्त्वा त्वाभरणं तस्यै कुब्जायै प्रमदोत्तमा ।
कैकेयी मन्थरां हृष्टा पुनरेवाब्रवीदिदम् ॥२८॥
28. dattvā tvābharaṇaṃ tasyai kubjāyai pramadottamā ,
kaikeyī mantharāṃ hṛṣṭā punarevābravīdidam.
28. dattvā ābharaṇam tasyai kubjāyai pramadottamā
kaikeyī mantharām hṛṣṭā punaḥ eva abravīt idam
28. pramadottamā kaikeyī hṛṣṭā dattvā ābharaṇam
tasyai kubjāyai mantharām punaḥ eva idam abravīt
28. The excellent lady Kaikeyī, delighted, having given an ornament to that hunchback (Mantharā), spoke this again to Mantharā.
इदं तु मन्थरे मह्यमाख्यासि परमं प्रियम् ।
एतन्मे प्रियमाख्यातुः किं वा भूयः करोमि ते ॥२९॥
29. idaṃ tu manthare mahyamākhyāsi paramaṃ priyam ,
etanme priyamākhyātuḥ kiṃ vā bhūyaḥ karomi te.
29. idam tu manthare mahyam ākhyāsi paramam priyam
etat me priyam ākhyātuḥ kim vā bhūyaḥ karomi te
29. manthare,
tvam idam paramam priyam mahyam ākhyāsi.
etat priyam me ākhyātuḥ te kim vā bhūyaḥ karomi?
29. O Mantharā, you indeed tell me this supremely pleasing news. What more shall I do for you, the teller of this dear thing to me?
रामे वा भरते वाहं विशेषं नोपलक्षये ।
तस्मात्तुष्टास्मि यद् राजा रामं राज्ये ऽभिषेक्ष्यति ॥३०॥
30. rāme vā bharate vāhaṃ viśeṣaṃ nopalakṣaye ,
tasmāttuṣṭāsmi yad rājā rāmaṃ rājye'bhiṣekṣyati.
30. rāme vā bharate vā aham viśeṣam na upalakṣaye
tasmāt tuṣṭā asmi yat rājā rāmam rājye abhiṣekṣyati
30. aham rāme vā bharate vā viśeṣam na upalakṣaye.
tasmāt,
yat rājā rāmam rājye abhiṣekṣyati,
[tena] tuṣṭā asmi.
30. I perceive no difference (viśeṣa) between Rāma and Bharata. Therefore, I am pleased that the king will consecrate Rāma to the kingdom.
न मे परं किं चिदितस्त्वया पुनः प्रियं प्रियार्हे सुवचं वचो वरम् ।
तथा ह्यवोचस्त्वमतः प्रियोत्तरं वरं परं ते प्रददामि तं वृणु ॥३१॥
31. na me paraṃ kiṃ ciditastvayā punaḥ priyaṃ priyārhe suvacaṃ vaco varam ,
tathā hyavocastvamataḥ priyottaraṃ varaṃ paraṃ te pradadāmi taṃ vṛṇu.
31. na me param kim cit itaḥ tvayā punaḥ
priyam priyārhe suvacam vacaḥ varam
tathā hi avocāḥ tvam ataḥ priyottaram
varam param te pradadāmi tam vṛṇu
31. priyārhe,
tvayā punaḥ itaḥ param priyam suvacam varam vacaḥ me na [uktam].
hi tvam tathā avocāḥ.
ataḥ,
te param priyottaram varam pradadāmi.
tam vṛṇu.
31. O worthy of love, no other dear, well-spoken, excellent word has been spoken by you that is more pleasing to me than this. Since you have spoken thus, I therefore grant you a supreme boon (vara) that is even more precious. Choose that!
