एतदाख्यानं तत् सर्वं हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
भूयः समुपचक्राम वचनं वक्तुमुत्तरम् ॥१॥
1. etadākhyānaṃ tat sarvaṃ hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ,
bhūyaḥ samupacakrāma vacanaṃ vaktumuttaram.

1. Hanuman, the son of Māruta, again began to speak further words, narrating all this.
सफलो राघवोद्योगः सुग्रीवस्य च संभ्रमः ।
शीलमासाद्य सीताया मम च प्लवनं महत् ॥२॥
2. saphalo rāghavodyogaḥ sugrīvasya ca saṃbhramaḥ ,
śīlamāsādya sītāyā mama ca plavanaṃ mahat.
2. saphalaḥ rāghavodyogaḥ sugrīvasya ca saṃbhramaḥ
śīlam āsādya sītāyāḥ mama ca plavanam mahat
2. Rāghava's endeavor and Sugrīva's effort have been fruitful. My great leap, too, has been fruitful, having discovered Sītā's pure character.
आर्यायाः सदृशं शीलं सीतायाः प्लवगर्षभाः ।
तपसा धारयेल् लोकान् क्रुद्धा वा निर्दहेदपि ॥३॥
3. āryāyāḥ sadṛśaṃ śīlaṃ sītāyāḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ ,
tapasā dhārayel lokān kruddhā vā nirdahedapi.

tapasā dhārayet lokān kruddhā vā nirdahet api

3. O best among monkeys, Sītā's character is fitting for a noble lady. Even angered, she could sustain the worlds by her ascetic power (tapas) or burn them down.
सर्वथातिप्रवृद्धो ऽसौ रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
यस्य तां स्पृशतो गात्रं तपसा न विनाशितम् ॥४॥
4. sarvathātipravṛddho'sau rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
yasya tāṃ spṛśato gātraṃ tapasā na vināśitam.
4. sarvathā atipravṛddhaḥ asau rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
yasya tām spṛśataḥ gātram tapasā na vināśitam

4. The demon king Rāvaṇa is utterly arrogant, for his body was not destroyed by the ascetic power (tapas) of Sītā when he touched her.
न तदग्निशिखा कुर्यात् संस्पृष्टा पाणिना सती ।
जनकस्यात्मजा कुर्यादुत्क्रोधकलुषीकृता ॥५॥
5. na tadagniśikhā kuryāt saṃspṛṣṭā pāṇinā satī ,
janakasyātmajā kuryādutkrodhakaluṣīkṛtā.
5. na tat agniśikhā kuryāt saṃspṛṣṭā pāṇinā satī
janakasyātmajā kuryāt utkrodhakaluṣīkṛtā
5. pāṇinā saṃspṛṣṭā satī agniśikhā tat na kuryāt

5. Even a flame, when touched by hand, would not do that (damage). But Janaka's daughter, when made impure by immense anger, could do it.
अशोकवनिकामध्ये रावणस्य दुरात्मनः ।
अधस्ताच्छिंशपावृक्षे साध्वी करुणमास्थिता ॥६॥
6. aśokavanikāmadhye rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ,
adhastācchiṃśapāvṛkṣe sādhvī karuṇamāsthitā.

adhastāt śiṃśapāvṛkṣe sādhvī karuṇam āsthitā

6. The virtuous lady (Sītā) was situated sorrowfully under a śiṃśapā tree, within the Aśoka grove of the evil-minded Rāvaṇa.
राक्षसीभिः परिवृता शोकसंतापकर्शिता ।
मेघलेखापरिवृता चन्द्रलेखेव निष्प्रभा ॥७॥
7. rākṣasībhiḥ parivṛtā śokasaṃtāpakarśitā ,
meghalekhāparivṛtā candralekheva niṣprabhā.

7. She was surrounded by female demons, emaciated by sorrow and anguish, and like a crescent moon enveloped by a bank of clouds, she was without luster.
अचिन्तयन्ती वैदेही रावणं बलदर्पितम् ।
पतिव्रता च सुश्रोणी अवष्टब्धा च जानकी ॥८॥
8. acintayantī vaidehī rāvaṇaṃ baladarpitam ,
pativratā ca suśroṇī avaṣṭabdhā ca jānakī.

8. Vaidehī (Sītā), a chaste wife (pativratā) with beautiful hips (suśroṇī), disregarded Rāvaṇa, who was arrogant due to his strength, and Jānakī (Sītā) remained steadfast, though held captive.
अनुरक्ता हि वैदेही रामं सर्वात्मना शुभा ।
अनन्यचित्ता रामे च पौलोमीव पुरंदरे ॥९॥
9. anuraktā hi vaidehī rāmaṃ sarvātmanā śubhā ,
ananyacittā rāme ca paulomīva puraṃdare.
9. anuraktā hi vaidehī rāmam sarvātmanā śubhā
ananyacittā rāme ca paulomī iva purandare
9. hi śubhā vaidehī rāmam sarvātmanā anuraktā

9. Indeed, the auspicious Vaidehī (Sītā) was deeply devoted to Rāma with her entire being (sarvātmā), her mind fixed solely on him, just as Paulomī is devoted to Purandara (Indra).
तदेकवासःसंवीता रजोध्वस्ता तथैव च ।
शोकसंतापदीनाङ्गी सीता भर्तृहिते रता ॥१०॥
10. tadekavāsaḥsaṃvītā rajodhvastā tathaiva ca ,
śokasaṃtāpadīnāṅgī sītā bhartṛhite ratā.
10. tadekavāsaḥsaṃvītā rajaḥdhvastā tathā eva
ca śokasaṃtāpadīnāṅgī sītā bhartṛhite ratā
10. sītā tadekavāsaḥsaṃvītā rajaḥdhvastā tathā
eva ca śokasaṃtāpadīnāṅgī bhartṛhite ratā
10. Sītā was clothed in a single garment, covered with dust, her limbs emaciated by sorrow and anguish, and she was devoted to her husband's welfare.
सा मया राक्षसी मध्ये तर्ज्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुः ।
राक्षसीभिर्विरूपाभिर्दृष्टा हि प्रमदा वने ॥११॥
11. sā mayā rākṣasī madhye tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ ,
rākṣasībhirvirūpābhirdṛṣṭā hi pramadā vane.
11. sā mayā rākṣasī madhye tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ
rākṣasībhiḥ virūpābhiḥ dṛṣṭā hi pramadā vane
11. sā pramadā hi mayā vane rākṣasī madhye virūpābhiḥ

11. Indeed, I saw that lady (Sitā) in the grove, amidst demonesses, repeatedly being threatened by those hideous demonesses.
एकवेणीधरा दीना भर्तृचिन्तापरायणा ।
अधःशय्या विवर्णाङ्गी पद्मिनीव हिमागमे ॥१२॥
12. ekaveṇīdharā dīnā bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā ,
adhaḥśayyā vivarṇāṅgī padminīva himāgame.
12. ekaveṇīdharā dīnā bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā
adhaḥśayyā vivarṇāṅgī padminī iva himāgame
12. ekaveṇīdharā dīnā bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā

12. She wore a single braid, was dejected, intensely absorbed in thoughts of her husband, sleeping on the bare ground, and her body was discolored, just like a lotus plant at the arrival of winter.
रावणाद्विनिवृत्तार्था मर्तव्यकृतनिश्चया ।
कथं चिन्मृगशावाक्षी विश्वासमुपपादिता ॥१३॥
13. rāvaṇādvinivṛttārthā martavyakṛtaniścayā ,
kathaṃ cinmṛgaśāvākṣī viśvāsamupapāditā.
13. rāvaṇāt vinivṛttārthā martavyakṛtaniścayā
katham cit mṛgaśāvākṣī viśvāsam upapāditā
13. vinivṛttārthā rāvaṇāt martavyakṛtaniścayā

13. Having completely turned away from (any compliance with) Rāvaṇa, and firmly resolved to die, how was that fawn-eyed lady somehow made to place her trust (in me)?
ततः संभाषिता चैव सर्वमर्थं च दर्शिता ।
रामसुग्रीवसख्यं च श्रुत्वा प्रीतिमुपागता ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ saṃbhāṣitā caiva sarvamarthaṃ ca darśitā ,
rāmasugrīvasakhyaṃ ca śrutvā prītimupāgatā.
14. tataḥ saṃbhāṣitā ca eva sarvam artham ca darśitā
rāmasugrīvasakhyam ca śrutvā prītim upāgatā
14. tataḥ sā eva saṃbhāṣitā ca sarvam artham ca
darśitā rāmasugrīvasakhyam ca śrutvā prītim upāgatā
14. Thereupon, I spoke to her and revealed all the details. And having heard about the alliance (sakhya) between Rāma and Sugrīva, she attained great joy.
नियतः समुदाचारो
भक्तिर्भर्तरि चोत्तमा ॥१५॥
15. niyataḥ samudācāro
bhaktirbhartari cottamā.

15. niyataḥ samudācāraḥ ca
uttamā bhaktiḥ bhartari
15. There is disciplined good conduct, and supreme devotion (bhakti) towards the husband.
यन्न हन्ति दशग्रीवं स महात्मा दशाननः ।
निमित्तमात्रं रामस्तु वधे तस्य भविष्यति ॥१६॥
16. yanna hanti daśagrīvaṃ sa mahātmā daśānanaḥ ,
nimittamātraṃ rāmastu vadhe tasya bhaviṣyati.
16. yat na hanti daśagrīvam saḥ mahātmā daśānanaḥ
nimittamātram rāmaḥ tu vadhe tasya bhaviṣyati
16. yat daśagrīvam na hanti saḥ mahātmā daśānanaḥ
tu rāmaḥ tasya vadhe nimittamātram bhaviṣyati
16. Because Daśagrīva is not slain [by anyone else], that great soul is Daśānana himself [who will cause his own downfall]. But Rāma will merely be an instrument in his slaying.
एवमास्ते महाभागा सीता शोकपरायणा ।
यदत्र प्रतिकर्तव्यं तत् सर्वमुपपाद्यताम् ॥१७॥
17. evamāste mahābhāgā sītā śokaparāyaṇā ,
yadatra pratikartavyaṃ tat sarvamupapādyatām.
17. evam āste mahābhāgā sītā śokaparāyaṇā yat
atra pratikartavyam tat sarvam upapādyatām
17. evam mahābhāgā sītā śokaparāyaṇā āste yat
atra pratikartavyam tat sarvam upapādyatām
17. Thus, the noble lady Sītā remains deeply immersed in sorrow. Whatever needs to be done here, let all that be brought about.
