1. Having heard those words from her, who was overwhelmed by grief, Hanumān, the chief of the monkeys, gave a comforting reply.
अहं रामस्य संदेशाद्देवि दूतस्तवागतः ।
वैदेहि कुशली रामस्त्वां च कौशलमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. ahaṃ rāmasya saṃdeśāddevi dūtastavāgataḥ ,
vaidehi kuśalī rāmastvāṃ ca kauśalamabravīt.
2. aham rāmasya sandeśāt devi dūtaḥ tava āgataḥ
vaidehi kuśalī rāmaḥ tvām ca kauśalam abravīt
2. devi aham rāmasya sandeśāt tava dūtaḥ āgataḥ

2. O Goddess, I am a messenger who has come to you with Rāma's message. O Vaidehī, Rāma is well and has sent his greetings to you.
यो ब्राह्ममस्त्रं वेदांश्च वेद वेदविदां वरः ।
स त्वां दाशरथी रामो देवि कौशलमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. yo brāhmamastraṃ vedāṃśca veda vedavidāṃ varaḥ ,
sa tvāṃ dāśarathī rāmo devi kauśalamabravīt.
3. yaḥ brāhmam astram vedān ca veda vedavidām varaḥ
saḥ tvām dāśarathiḥ rāmaḥ devi kauśalam abravīt

3. O Goddess, that very Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, who knows the divine weapon (brahma-astra) and the Vedas, and is the foremost among those who know the Vedas, has sent his greetings to you.
लक्ष्मणश्च महातेजा भर्तुस्ते ऽनुचरः प्रियः ।
कृतवाञ् शोकसंतप्तः शिरसा ते ऽभिवादनम् ॥४॥
4. lakṣmaṇaśca mahātejā bhartuste'nucaraḥ priyaḥ ,
kṛtavāñ śokasaṃtaptaḥ śirasā te'bhivādanam.
4. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahātejāḥ bhartuḥ te anucaraḥ priyaḥ
kṛtavān śokasaṃtaptāḥ śirasā te abhivādanam

4. Lakshmana, your husband's dear and greatly energetic attendant, deeply distressed by sorrow, has also offered his obeisance to you with his head.
सा तयोः कुशलं देवी निशम्य नरसिंहयोः ।
प्रीतिसंहृष्टसर्वाङ्गी हनूमान्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. sā tayoḥ kuśalaṃ devī niśamya narasiṃhayoḥ ,
prītisaṃhṛṣṭasarvāṅgī hanūmāntamathābravīt.
5. sā tayoḥ kuśalam devī niśamya narasiṃhayoḥ
prītisaṃhṛṣṭasarvāṅgī hanūmantam atha abravīt
5. sā devī tayoḥ narasiṃhayoḥ kuśalam niśamya

5. The goddess (Sita), having heard of the well-being of those two lions among men (Rama and Lakshmana), her entire body bristling with delight, then spoke to Hanuman.
कल्याणी बत गथेयं लौकिकी प्रतिभाति मे ।
एहि जीवन्तमानदो नरं वर्षशतादपि ॥६॥
6. kalyāṇī bata gatheyaṃ laukikī pratibhāti me ,
ehi jīvantamānado naraṃ varṣaśatādapi.
6. kalyāṇī bata gathā iyam laukikī pratibhāti
me ehi jīvantam ānadaḥ naram varṣaśatāt api
6. ehi bata iyam laukikī gathā kalyāṇī me
pratibhāti jīvantam naram ānadaḥ varṣaśatāt api
6. Come! Indeed, this popular saying appears auspicious to me: 'Joy comes to a living person even after a hundred years.'
तयोः समागमे तस्मिन्प्रीतिरुत्पादिताद्भुता ।
परस्परेण चालापं विश्वस्तौ तौ प्रचक्रतुः ॥७॥
7. tayoḥ samāgame tasminprītirutpāditādbhutā ,
paraspareṇa cālāpaṃ viśvastau tau pracakratuḥ.
7. tayoḥ samāgame tasmin prītiḥ utpāditā adbhutā
paraspareṇa ca ālāpam viśvastau tau pracakratuḥ
7. tayoḥ tasmin samāgame adbhutā prītiḥ utpāditā

7. In that meeting between the two of them, a wonderful joy arose. And having developed mutual trust, the two of them began a conversation.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा हनूमान् हरियूथपः ।
सीतायाः शोकदीनायाः समीपमुपचक्रमे ॥८॥
8. tasyāstadvacanaṃ śrutvā hanūmān hariyūthapaḥ ,
sītāyāḥ śokadīnāyāḥ samīpamupacakrame.
8. tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā hanūmān hariyūthapaḥ
sītāyāḥ śokadīnāyāḥ samīpam upacakrame
8. Having heard her words, Hanuman, the chief of the monkey (hari) host, approached Sītā, who was overcome with sorrow.
यथा यथा समीपं स हनूमानुपसर्पति ।
तथा तथा रावणं सा तं सीता परिशङ्कते ॥९॥
9. yathā yathā samīpaṃ sa hanūmānupasarpati ,
tathā tathā rāvaṇaṃ sā taṃ sītā pariśaṅkate.
9. yathā yathā samīpam saḥ hanūmān upasarpati
tathā tathā rāvaṇam sā tam sītā pariśaṅkate
9. As Hanuman drew closer and closer, Sītā increasingly suspected him to be Rāvaṇa.
अहो धिग्धिक्कृतमिदं कथितं हि यदस्य मे ।
रूपान्तरमुपागम्य स एवायं हि रावणः ॥१०॥
10. aho dhigdhikkṛtamidaṃ kathitaṃ hi yadasya me ,
rūpāntaramupāgamya sa evāyaṃ hi rāvaṇaḥ.
10. aho dhik dhik kṛtam idam kathitam hi yat asya
me rūpāntaram upāgamya saḥ eva ayam hi rāvaṇaḥ
10. Oh, alas, alas! That I spoke to him! Having assumed a different form, this is indeed that very Rāvaṇa!
तामशोकस्य शाखां सा विमुक्त्वा शोककर्शिता ।
तस्यामेवानवद्याङ्गी धरण्यां समुपाविशत् ॥११॥
11. tāmaśokasya śākhāṃ sā vimuktvā śokakarśitā ,
tasyāmevānavadyāṅgī dharaṇyāṃ samupāviśat.
11. tām aśokasya śākhām sā vimuktvā śokakarśitā
tasyām eva anavadyāṅgī dharaṇyām samupāviśat
11. Having released that branch of the Aśoka tree, she, whose body was emaciated by sorrow (śoka) yet possessed blameless limbs, sat down on the very ground.
अवन्दत महाबाहुस्ततस्तां जनकात्मजाम् ।
सा चैनं भयवित्रस्ता भूयो नैवाभ्युदैक्षत ॥१२॥
12. avandata mahābāhustatastāṃ janakātmajām ,
sā cainaṃ bhayavitrastā bhūyo naivābhyudaikṣata.
12. avandata mahābāhuḥ tataḥ tām janakātmajām sā ca
enam bhayavitrastā bhūyaḥ na eva abhyudaikṣata
12. tataḥ mahābāhuḥ tām janakātmajām avandata ca sā
bhayavitrastā bhūyaḥ enam na eva abhyudaikṣata
12. Then, the mighty-armed one bowed to the daughter of Janaka. And she, terrified by fear, certainly did not look at him again.
तं दृष्ट्वा वन्दमानं तु सीता शशिनिभानना ।
अब्रवीद्दीर्घमुच्छ्वस्य वानरं मधुरस्वरा ॥१३॥
13. taṃ dṛṣṭvā vandamānaṃ tu sītā śaśinibhānanā ,
abravīddīrghamucchvasya vānaraṃ madhurasvarā.
13. tam dṛṣṭvā vandamānam tu sītā śaśinibhānanā
abravīt dīrgham ucchvasya vānaram madhurasvarā
13. tu śaśinibhānanā madhurasvarā sītā tam vandamānam
dṛṣṭvā dīrgham ucchvasya vānaram abravīt
13. Sītā, whose face resembled the moon and whose voice was sweet, having seen him bowing, sighed deeply and spoke to the monkey.
मायां प्रविष्टो मायावी यदि त्वं रावणः स्वयम् ।
उत्पादयसि मे भूयः संतापं तन्न शोभनम् ॥१४॥
14. māyāṃ praviṣṭo māyāvī yadi tvaṃ rāvaṇaḥ svayam ,
utpādayasi me bhūyaḥ saṃtāpaṃ tanna śobhanam.
14. māyām praviṣṭaḥ māyāvī yadi tvam rāvaṇaḥ svayam
utpādayasi me bhūyaḥ saṃtāpam tat na śobhanam
14. yadi tvam svayam rāvaṇaḥ māyām praviṣṭaḥ māyāvī
me bhūyaḥ saṃtāpam utpādayasi tat na śobhanam
14. If you are Rāvaṇa himself, an illusionist (māyāvī) who has entered into a deceptive form, and you are causing me further distress, then that is not proper.
स्वं परित्यज्य रूपं यः परिव्राजकरूपधृत् ।
जनस्थाने मया दृष्टस्त्वं स एवासि रावणः ॥१५॥
15. svaṃ parityajya rūpaṃ yaḥ parivrājakarūpadhṛt ,
janasthāne mayā dṛṣṭastvaṃ sa evāsi rāvaṇaḥ.
15. svam parityajya rūpam yaḥ parivrājakarūpadhṛt
janasthāne mayā dṛṣṭaḥ tvam saḥ eva asi rāvaṇaḥ
15. tvam saḥ eva rāvaṇaḥ asi yaḥ svam rūpam parityajya
parivrājakarūpadhṛt janasthāne mayā dṛṣṭaḥ
15. You are indeed that same Rāvaṇa who, having abandoned your own form and assumed the guise of a wandering ascetic, was seen by me in Janasthāna.
उपवासकृशां दीनां कामरूप निशाचर ।
संतापयसि मां भूयः संतापं तन्न शोभनम् ॥१६॥
16. upavāsakṛśāṃ dīnāṃ kāmarūpa niśācara ,
saṃtāpayasi māṃ bhūyaḥ saṃtāpaṃ tanna śobhanam.
16. upavāsakṛśām dīnām kāmarūpa niśācara |
saṃtāpayasi mām bhūyaḥ saṃtāpam tat na śobhanam
16. kāmarūpa niśācara upavāsakṛśām dīnām mām
bhūyaḥ saṃtāpayasi tat saṃtāpam na śobhanam
16. O shapeshifting night-prowler, you continue to torment me, who am emaciated from fasting and filled with sorrow. Such torment is not appropriate.
यदि रामस्य दूतस्त्वमागतो भद्रमस्तु ते ।
पृच्छामि त्वां हरिश्रेष्ठ प्रिया राम कथा हि मे ॥१७॥
17. yadi rāmasya dūtastvamāgato bhadramastu te ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṃ hariśreṣṭha priyā rāma kathā hi me.
17. yadi rāmasya dūtaḥ tvam āgataḥ bhadram astu te |
pṛcchāmi tvām hariśreṣṭha priyā rāma kathā hi me
17. yadi tvam rāmasya dūtaḥ āgataḥ te bhadram astu
hariśreṣṭha tvām pṛcchāmi hi rāma kathā me priyā
17. If you have come as Rāma's messenger, then may well-being be yours. O best among monkeys, I ask you, for the story of Rāma is indeed very dear to me.
गुणान् रामस्य कथय प्रियस्य मम वानर ।
चित्तं हरसि मे सौम्य नदीकूलं यथा रयः ॥१८॥
18. guṇān rāmasya kathaya priyasya mama vānara ,
cittaṃ harasi me saumya nadīkūlaṃ yathā rayaḥ.
18. guṇān rāmasya kathaya priyasya mama vānara |
cittam harasi me saumya nadīkūlam yathā rayaḥ
18. vānara mama priyasya rāmasya guṇān kathaya
saumya yathā rayaḥ nadīkūlam me cittam harasi
18. O monkey, recount the noble qualities of my beloved Rāma. O gentle one, you captivate my mind just as a strong current erodes a riverbank.
अहो स्वप्नस्य सुखता याहमेवं चिराहृता ।
प्रेषितं नाम पश्यामि राघवेण वनौकसं ॥१९॥
19. aho svapnasya sukhatā yāhamevaṃ cirāhṛtā ,
preṣitaṃ nāma paśyāmi rāghaveṇa vanaukasaṃ.
19. aho svapnasya sukhatā yā aham evam cirāhṛtā
| preṣitam nāma paśyāmi rāghaveṇa vanaukasam
19. aho svapnasya sukhatā yā aham evam cirāhṛtā
rāghaveṇa preṣitam nāma vanaukasam paśyāmi
19. Oh, what a pleasant dream it is! For I, who have been long separated (from Rāma), now indeed see a forest-dweller (vānara) sent by Rāghava (Rāma).
स्वप्ने ऽपि यद्यहं वीरं राघवं सहलक्ष्मणम् ।
पश्येयं नावसीदेयं स्वप्नो ऽपि मम मत्सरी ॥२०॥
20. svapne'pi yadyahaṃ vīraṃ rāghavaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ,
paśyeyaṃ nāvasīdeyaṃ svapno'pi mama matsarī.
20. svapne api yadi aham vīram rāghavam sahalakṣmaṇam
paśyeyam na avasīdeyam svapnaḥ api mama matsarī
20. yadi aham svapne api vīram rāghavam sahalakṣmaṇam paśyeyam,
na avasīdeyam.

20. Even in a dream, if I were to see the heroic Rāghava (Rāma) with Lakṣmaṇa, I would not fall into despair. Yet, even my dream seems uncooperative with me.
नाहं स्वप्नमिमं मन्ये स्वप्ने दृष्ट्वा हि वानरम् ।
न शक्यो ऽभ्युदयः प्राप्तुं प्राप्तश्चाभ्युदयो मम ॥२१॥
21. nāhaṃ svapnamimaṃ manye svapne dṛṣṭvā hi vānaram ,
na śakyo'bhyudayaḥ prāptuṃ prāptaścābhyudayo mama.
21. na aham svapnam imam manye svapne dṛṣṭvā hi vānaram na
śakyaḥ abhyudayaḥ prāptum prāptaḥ ca abhyudayaḥ mama
21. aham imam svapnam na manye,
hi svapne vānaram dṛṣṭvā abhyudayaḥ prāptum na śakyaḥ,
ca mama abhyudayaḥ prāptaḥ.
21. I do not consider this a dream, for it is impossible to attain prosperity after seeing a monkey in a dream, yet prosperity has been attained by me.
किं नु स्याच्चित्तमोहो ऽयं भवेद्वातगतिस्त्वियम् ।
उन्मादजो विकारो वा स्यादियं मृगतृष्णिका ॥२२॥
22. kiṃ nu syāccittamoho'yaṃ bhavedvātagatistviyam ,
unmādajo vikāro vā syādiyaṃ mṛgatṛṣṇikā.
22. kim nu syāt citta-mohaḥ ayam bhavet vāta-gatiḥ tu
iyam unmāda-jaḥ vikāraḥ vā syāt iyam mṛgatṛṣṇikā
22. kim nu ayam citta-mohaḥ syāt? vāta-gatiḥ tu iyam
bhavet? vā unmāda-jaḥ vikāraḥ? vā iyam mṛgatṛṣṇikā syāt?
22. What could this be? Is this a delusion of the mind? Or perhaps it is a mere gust of wind? Is it a disturbance born of madness, or could this be a mirage?
अथ वा नायमुन्मादो मोहो ऽप्युन्मादलक्ष्मणः ।
संबुध्ये चाहमात्मानमिमं चापि वनौकसं ॥२३॥
23. atha vā nāyamunmādo moho'pyunmādalakṣmaṇaḥ ,
saṃbudhye cāhamātmānamimaṃ cāpi vanaukasaṃ.
23. atha vā na ayam unmādaḥ mohaḥ api unmāda-lakṣmaṇaḥ
sambudhye ca aham ātmanam imam ca api vanaukasam
23. atha vā ayam unmādaḥ na,
mohaḥ api unmāda-lakṣmaṇaḥ na.
ca aham ātmanam ca imam vanaukasam api sambudhye.
23. Or rather, this is not madness, nor is it a delusion characterized by madness. I fully perceive my own self (ātman) and also this forest-dweller.
इत्येवं बहुधा सीता संप्रधार्य बलाबलम् ।
रक्षसां कामरूपत्वान्मेने तं राक्षसाधिपम् ॥२४॥
24. ityevaṃ bahudhā sītā saṃpradhārya balābalam ,
rakṣasāṃ kāmarūpatvānmene taṃ rākṣasādhipam.
24. iti evam bahudhā sītā sampradhārya balābalam
rakṣasām kāmarūpatvāt mene tam rākṣasādhipam
24. iti evam bahudhā sītā rakṣasām balābalam
kāmarūpatvāt sampradhārya tam rākṣasādhipam mene
24. Having thus considered in many ways the relative strengths and weaknesses, and due to the rākṣasas' ability to assume any form they desired, Sita concluded that he was the lord of the rākṣasas.
एतां बुद्धिं तदा कृत्वा सीता सा तनुमध्यमा ।
न प्रतिव्याजहाराथ वानरं जनकात्मजा ॥२५॥
25. etāṃ buddhiṃ tadā kṛtvā sītā sā tanumadhyamā ,
na prativyājahārātha vānaraṃ janakātmajā.
25. etām buddhim tadā kṛtvā sītā sā tanumadhyamā
na prativyājahāra atha vānaram janakātmajā
25. tadā etām buddhim kṛtvā sā tanumadhyamā
janakātmajā sītā vānaram na prativyājahāra atha
25. At that time, having come to this conclusion, Sita, the slender-waisted daughter of Janaka, did not respond to the monkey.
सीतायाश्चिन्तितं बुद्ध्वा हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
श्रोत्रानुकूलैर्वचनैस्तदा तां संप्रहर्षयत् ॥२६॥
26. sītāyāścintitaṃ buddhvā hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ,
śrotrānukūlairvacanaistadā tāṃ saṃpraharṣayat.
26. sītāyāḥ cintitam buddhvā hanumān mārutātmajaḥ
śrotrānukūlaiḥ vacanaiḥ tadā tām sampraharṣayat
26. sītāyāḥ cintitam buddhvā mārutātmajaḥ hanumān
tadā śrotrānukūlaiḥ vacanaiḥ tām sampraharṣayat
26. Having understood Sita's thought, Hanuman, the son of Maruta (Vāyu), then gladdened her with words pleasing to her ears.
आदित्य इव तेजस्वी लोककान्तः शशी यथा ।
राजा सर्वस्य लोकस्य देवो वैश्रवणो यथा ॥२७॥
27. āditya iva tejasvī lokakāntaḥ śaśī yathā ,
rājā sarvasya lokasya devo vaiśravaṇo yathā.
27. ādityaḥ iva tejasvī lokakāntaḥ śaśī yathā
rājā sarvasya lokasya devaḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ yathā
27. tejasvī ādityaḥ iva,
lokakāntaḥ śaśī yathā,
sarvasya lokasya rājā devaḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ yathā
27. Radiant like the sun, beloved by the world like the moon; he is the king of all people, like the god Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera).
विक्रमेणोपपन्नश्च यथा विष्णुर्महायशाः ।
सत्यवादी मधुरवाग्देवो वाचस्पतिर्यथा ॥२८॥
28. vikrameṇopapannaśca yathā viṣṇurmahāyaśāḥ ,
satyavādī madhuravāgdevo vācaspatiryathā.
28. vikrameṇa upapannaḥ ca yathā viṣṇuḥ mahāyaśāḥ
satyavādī madhuravāk devaḥ vācaspatiḥ yathā
28. ca vikrameṇa upapannaḥ yathā mahāyaśāḥ viṣṇuḥ,
satyavādī madhuravāk ca yathā devaḥ vācaspatiḥ
28. And he is endowed with valor, just like the highly renowned (Viṣṇu). He is a speaker of truth and sweet-voiced, just like the divine lord of speech (Vācaspati).
रूपवान् सुभगः श्रीमान् कन्दर्प इव मूर्तिमान् ।
स्थानक्रोधप्रहर्ता च श्रेष्ठो लोके महारथः ।
बाहुच्छायामवष्टब्धो यस्य लोको महात्मनः ॥२९॥
29. rūpavān subhagaḥ śrīmān kandarpa iva mūrtimān ,
sthānakrodhaprahartā ca śreṣṭho loke mahārathaḥ ,
bāhucchāyāmavaṣṭabdho yasya loko mahātmanaḥ.
29. rūpavān subhagaḥ śrīmān kandarpaḥ
iva mūrtimān sthānakrodhaprahartā ca
śreṣṭhaḥ loke mahārathaḥ bāhucchāyām
avaṣṭabdhaḥ yasya lokaḥ mahātmanaḥ
29. rūpavān subhagaḥ śrīmān mūrtimān kandarpaḥ iva,
ca sthānakrodhaprahartā śreṣṭhaḥ mahārathaḥ loke.
yasya mahātmanaḥ bāhucchāyām lokaḥ avaṣṭabdhaḥ
29. He is handsome, charming, and glorious, like an embodied Kamadeva. And he is one who inflicts punishment at the proper time and place, the best and a great warrior in the world. The world (loka) relies upon the protection of this great-souled one (mahātman).
अपकृष्याश्रमपदान्मृगरूपेण राघवम् ।
शून्ये येनापनीतासि तस्य द्रक्ष्यसि यत् फलम् ॥३०॥
30. apakṛṣyāśramapadānmṛgarūpeṇa rāghavam ,
śūnye yenāpanītāsi tasya drakṣyasi yat phalam.
30. apakṛṣya āśramapadāt mṛgarūpeṇa rāghavam śūnye
yena apanītā asi tasya drakṣyasi yat phalam
30. yena mṛgarūpeṇa rāghavam āśramapadāt apakṛṣya,
śūnye apanītā asi,
tasya yat phalam drakṣyasi
30. You will see the consequence of that person who, after luring Rāghava away from the hermitage by assuming the form of a deer, then abducted you into an empty place.
नचिराद् रावणं संख्ये यो वधिष्यति वीर्यवान् ।
रोषप्रमुक्तैरिषुभिर्ज्वलद्भिरिव पावकैः ॥३१॥
31. nacirād rāvaṇaṃ saṃkhye yo vadhiṣyati vīryavān ,
roṣapramuktairiṣubhirjvaladbhiriva pāvakaiḥ.
31. nacirāt rāvaṇam saṃkhye yaḥ vadhiṣyati vīryavān
roṣapramuktaiḥ iṣubhiḥ jvaladbhiḥ iva pāvakaiḥ
31. yaḥ vīryavān nacirāt saṃkhye rāvaṇam vadhiṣyati
roṣapramuktaiḥ jvaladbhiḥ pāvakaiḥ iva iṣubhiḥ
31. The valorous one who will soon kill Rāvaṇa in battle with arrows released in wrath, blazing like fires.
तेनाहं प्रेषितो दूतस्त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः ।
त्वद्वियोगेन दुःखार्तः स त्वां कौशलमब्रवीत् ॥३२॥
32. tenāhaṃ preṣito dūtastvatsakāśamihāgataḥ ,
tvadviyogena duḥkhārtaḥ sa tvāṃ kauśalamabravīt.
32. tena aham preṣitaḥ dūtaḥ tvat sakāśam iha āgataḥ
tvat viyogena duḥkha ārtaḥ saḥ tvām kauśalam abravīt
32. tena preṣitaḥ dūtaḥ aham iha tvat sakāśam āgataḥ
tvat viyogena duḥkha ārtaḥ saḥ tvām kauśalam abravīt
32. Sent by him, I, a messenger, have come here to your presence. He, distressed by your separation, conveys his well-being to you.
लक्ष्मणश्च महातेजाः सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः ।
अभिवाद्य महाबाहुः सो ऽपि कौशलमब्रवीत् ॥३३॥
33. lakṣmaṇaśca mahātejāḥ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ ,
abhivādya mahābāhuḥ so'pi kauśalamabravīt.
33. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahātejāḥ sumitrā ānanda vardhanaḥ
abhivādya mahābāhuḥ saḥ api kauśalam abravīt
33. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahātejāḥ sumitrā ānanda vardhanaḥ
mahābāhuḥ abhivādya saḥ api kauśalam abravīt
33. Lakṣmaṇa, too, of great brilliance, who enhances Sumitrā's joy, after respectfully bowing, that mighty-armed one also conveyed his well-being.
रामस्य च सखा देवि सुग्रीवो नाम वानरः ।
राजा वानरमुख्यानां स त्वां कौशलमब्रवीत् ॥३४॥
34. rāmasya ca sakhā devi sugrīvo nāma vānaraḥ ,
rājā vānaramukhyānāṃ sa tvāṃ kauśalamabravīt.
34. rāmasya ca sakhā devi sugrīvaḥ nāma vānaraḥ
rājā vānara mukhyānām saḥ tvām kauśalam abravīt
34. devi rāmasya ca sakhā sugrīvaḥ nāma vānaraḥ
vānara mukhyānām rājā saḥ tvām kauśalam abravīt
34. And, O goddess, Sugrīva by name, the (vānara), friend of Rāma, the king of the chief (vānara)s, he also conveys his well-being to you.
नित्यं स्मरति रामस्त्वां ससुग्रीवः सलक्ष्मणः ।
दिष्ट्या जीवसि वैदेहि राक्षसी वशमागता ॥३५॥
35. nityaṃ smarati rāmastvāṃ sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ ,
diṣṭyā jīvasi vaidehi rākṣasī vaśamāgatā.
35. nityam smarati rāmaḥ tvām sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ
diṣṭyā jīvasi vaidehi rākṣasī vaśam āgatā
35. vaidehi rāmaḥ sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ tvām nityam
smarati diṣṭyā rākṣasī vaśam āgatā jīvasi
35. Rāma, along with Sugrīva and Lakṣmaṇa, constantly remembers you. Fortunately, O Vaidehī, you are still alive, even though you have fallen into the clutches of a demoness.
नचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसे रामं लक्ष्मणं च महारथम् ।
मध्ये वानरकोटीनां सुग्रीवं चामितौजसं ॥३६॥
36. nacirāddrakṣyase rāmaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahāratham ,
madhye vānarakoṭīnāṃ sugrīvaṃ cāmitaujasaṃ.
36. na cirāt drakṣyase rāmam lakṣmaṇam ca mahāratham
madhye vānarakoṭīnām sugrīvam ca amitaujasam
36. na cirāt rāmam lakṣmaṇam ca mahāratham sugrīvam
ca amitaujasam vānarakoṭīnām madhye drakṣyase
36. Soon you will see Rama and Lakshmana, great warriors, and Sugriva of immeasurable might, amidst millions of monkeys.
अहं सुग्रीवसचिवो हनूमान्नाम वानरः ।
प्रविष्टो नगरीं लङ्कां लङ्घयित्वा महोदधिम् ॥३७॥
37. ahaṃ sugrīvasacivo hanūmānnāma vānaraḥ ,
praviṣṭo nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ laṅghayitvā mahodadhim.
37. aham sugrīvasacivaḥ hanūmān nāma vānaraḥ
praviṣṭaḥ nagarīm laṅkām laṅghayitvā mahodadhim
37. aham sugrīvasacivaḥ hanūmān nāma vānaraḥ
mahodadhim laṅghayitvā nagarīm laṅkām praviṣṭaḥ
37. I am Hanuman by name, a monkey, the minister of Sugriva. Having crossed the great ocean, I have entered the city of Lanka.
कृत्वा मूर्ध्नि पदन्यासं रावणस्य दुरात्मनः ।
त्वां द्रष्टुमुपयातो ऽहं समाश्रित्य पराक्रमम् ॥३८॥
38. kṛtvā mūrdhni padanyāsaṃ rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ,
tvāṃ draṣṭumupayāto'haṃ samāśritya parākramam.
38. kṛtvā mūrdhni padanyāsam rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ
tvām draṣṭum upayātaḥ aham samāśritya parākramam
38. aham durātmanaḥ rāvaṇasya mūrdhni padanyāsam
kṛtvā parākramam samāśritya tvām draṣṭum upayātaḥ
38. Having placed my foot on the head of the evil-minded Ravana, I have come to see you, relying on my might.
नाहमस्मि तथा देवि यथा मामवगच्छसि ।
विशङ्का त्यज्यतामेषा श्रद्धत्स्व वदतो मम ॥३९॥
39. nāhamasmi tathā devi yathā māmavagacchasi ,
viśaṅkā tyajyatāmeṣā śraddhatsva vadato mama.
39. na aham asmi tathā devi yathā mām avagacchasi
viśaṅkā tyajyatām eṣā śraddhatsva vadataḥ mama
39. devi yathā mām avagacchasi tathā aham na asmi
eṣā viśaṅkā tyajyatām mama vadataḥ śraddhatsva
39. O Goddess, I am not as you perceive me to be. Let this suspicion be abandoned. Believe what I say.
