ब्रह्मयोनिर्महानासीत् कुशो नाम महातपाः ।
वैदर्भ्यां जनयामास चतुरः सदृशान् सुतान् ।
कुशाम्बं कुशनाभं च आधूर्तरजसं वसुम् ॥१॥
1. brahmayonirmahānāsīt kuśo nāma mahātapāḥ ,

1. There was a great ascetic (tapas) named Kusha, who originated from (brahmayoni) Brahman. Through Vaidarbhī, he begot four sons similar to himself: Kushamba, Kushanabha, Adhūrtarajas, and Vasu.
दीप्तियुक्तान्महोत्साहान् क्षत्रधर्मचिकीर्षया ।
तानुवाच कुशः पुत्रान्धर्मिष्ठान् सत्यवादिनः ।
क्रियतां पालनं पुत्रा धर्मं प्राप्स्यथ पुष्कलम् ॥२॥
2. dīptiyuktānmahotsāhān kṣatradharmacikīrṣayā ,
tānuvāca kuśaḥ putrāndharmiṣṭhān satyavādinaḥ ,
kriyatāṃ pālanaṃ putrā dharmaṃ prāpsyatha puṣkalam.

2. Kuśa, desiring to fulfill the duty (dharma) of a warrior (kṣatra), addressed his sons, who were radiant, greatly enthusiastic, most righteous, and truthful. He said: 'O sons, let governance be established; you will thereby achieve abundant righteousness (dharma).'
कुशस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा चत्वारो लोकसंमताः ।
निवेशं चक्रिरे सर्वे पुराणां नृवरास्तदा ॥३॥
3. kuśasya vacanaṃ śrutvā catvāro lokasaṃmatāḥ ,
niveśaṃ cakrire sarve purāṇāṃ nṛvarāstadā.

niveśam cakrire sarve purāṇām nṛvarāḥ tadā

3. Having heard Kuśa's command, all four of those sons, who were respected by the people and were the best among men, then established (their own) cities.
कुशाम्बस्तु महातेजाः कौशाम्बीमकरोत् पुरीम् ।
कुशनाभस्तु धर्मात्मा परं चक्रे महोदयम् ॥४॥
4. kuśāmbastu mahātejāḥ kauśāmbīmakarot purīm ,
kuśanābhastu dharmātmā paraṃ cakre mahodayam.
4. kuśāmbaḥ tu mahātejāḥ kauśāmbīm akarot purīm
kuśanābhaḥ tu dharmātmā param cakre mahodayam
4. kuśāmbaḥ tu mahātejāḥ kauśāmbīm purīm akarot
kuśanābhaḥ tu dharmātmā param mahodayam cakre
4. Kuśāmba, the greatly resplendent, established the city of Kauśāmbī. And Kuśanābha, a righteous soul (dharmātmā), brought about supreme prosperity.
आधूर्तरजसो राम धर्मारण्यं महीपतिः ।
चक्रे पुरवरं राजा वसुश्चक्रे गिरिव्रजम् ॥५॥
5. ādhūrtarajaso rāma dharmāraṇyaṃ mahīpatiḥ ,
cakre puravaraṃ rājā vasuścakre girivrajam.

cakre puravaram rājā vasuḥ cakre girivrajam
5. rāma rājā mahīpatiḥ ādhūrtarajasaḥ dharmāraṇyam

5. O Rāma, King Ādhūrtarajasa established Dharmāraṇya as an excellent city. And King Vasu founded Girivraja.
एषा वसुमती राम वसोस्तस्य महात्मनः ।
एते शैलवराः पञ्च प्रकाशन्ते समन्ततः ॥६॥
6. eṣā vasumatī rāma vasostasya mahātmanaḥ ,
ete śailavarāḥ pañca prakāśante samantataḥ.
6. eṣā vasumatī rāma vasoḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
ete śailavarāḥ pañca prakāśante samantataḥ
6. O Rama, this wealthy land (vasumatī) belongs to that great-souled (mahātman) Vasu. These five excellent mountains shine all around.
सुमागधी नदी रम्या मागधान् विश्रुताययौ ।
पञ्चानां शैलमुख्यानां मध्ये मालेव शोभते ॥७॥
7. sumāgadhī nadī ramyā māgadhān viśrutāyayau ,
pañcānāṃ śailamukhyānāṃ madhye māleva śobhate.

pañcānām śailamukhyānām madhye mālā iva śobhate
7. The beautiful river Sumagadhi, renowned, flowed through the Magadha region. It appears splendid like a garland amidst the five principal mountains.
सैषा हि मागधी राम वसोस्तस्य महात्मनः ।
पूर्वाभिचरिता राम सुक्षेत्रा सस्यमालिनी ॥८॥
8. saiṣā hi māgadhī rāma vasostasya mahātmanaḥ ,
pūrvābhicaritā rāma sukṣetrā sasyamālinī.
8. sā eṣā hi māgadhī rāma vasoḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
pūrvābhicaritā rāma sukṣetrā sasyamālinī
8. O Rama, this very Magadhi (river/region) indeed belongs to that great-souled (mahātman) Vasu. O Rama, it was previously cultivated, a fertile land, adorned with abundant crops.
कुशनाभस्तु राजर्षिः कन्याशतमनुत्तमम् ।
जनयामास धर्मात्मा घृताच्यां रघुनन्दन ॥९॥
9. kuśanābhastu rājarṣiḥ kanyāśatamanuttamam ,
janayāmāsa dharmātmā ghṛtācyāṃ raghunandana.
9. kuśanābhaḥ tu rājarṣiḥ kanyāśatam anuttamam
janayāmāsa dharmātmā ghṛtācyām raghunandana
9. O scion of Raghu (raghunandana), the righteous-souled (dharmātman) royal sage (rājarṣi) Kuśanābha begot a hundred peerless daughters by Ghṛtācī.
तास्तु यौवनशालिन्यो रूपवत्यः स्वलंकृताः ।
उद्यानभूमिमागम्य प्रावृषीव शतह्रदाः ॥१०॥
10. tāstu yauvanaśālinyo rūpavatyaḥ svalaṃkṛtāḥ ,
udyānabhūmimāgamya prāvṛṣīva śatahradāḥ.
10. ताः तु यौवनशालिन्यः रूपवत्यः स्वलंकृताः
उद्यानभूमिम् आगम्य प्रावृषि इव शतह्रदाः
10. Those women, radiant with youth, beautiful, and well-adorned, having arrived at the garden, appeared like flashes of lightning in the rainy season.
गायन्त्यो नृत्यमानाश्च वादयन्त्यश्च राघव ।
आमोदं परमं जग्मुर्वराभरणभूषिताः ॥११॥
11. gāyantyo nṛtyamānāśca vādayantyaśca rāghava ,
āmodaṃ paramaṃ jagmurvarābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ.
11. गायन्त्यः नृत्यमानाः च वादयन्त्यः च
राघव आमोदम् परमम् जग्मुः वराभरणभूषिताः
11. O Rāghava, singing, dancing, and playing instruments, adorned with excellent ornaments, they attained supreme joy.
अथ ताश्चारुसर्वाङ्ग्यो रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ।
उद्यानभूमिमागम्य तारा इव घनान्तरे ॥१२॥
12. atha tāścārusarvāṅgyo rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi ,
udyānabhūmimāgamya tārā iva ghanāntare.
12. अथ ताः च चारुसर्वाङ्ग्यः रूपेण अप्रतिमा
भुवि उद्यानभूमिम् आगम्य ताराः इव घनान्तरे
12. And then, those women, beautiful in all their limbs, unequalled in beauty on earth, having arrived at the garden, shone like stars in the midst of clouds.
ताः सर्वगुणसंपन्ना रूपयौवनसंयुताः ।
दृष्ट्वा सर्वात्मको वायुरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. tāḥ sarvaguṇasaṃpannā rūpayauvanasaṃyutāḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā sarvātmako vāyuridaṃ vacanamabravīt.
13. ताः सर्वगुणसंपन्नाः रूपयौवनसंयुताः दृष्ट्वा
सर्वात्मकः वायुः इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत्
13. Having seen those women, who were endowed with all good qualities and possessed of beauty and youth, Vayu, the all-pervading spirit (ātman), spoke these words.
अहं वः कामये सर्वा भार्या मम भविष्यथ ।
मानुषस्त्यज्यतां भावो दीर्घमायुरवाप्स्यथ ॥१४॥
14. ahaṃ vaḥ kāmaye sarvā bhāryā mama bhaviṣyatha ,
mānuṣastyajyatāṃ bhāvo dīrghamāyuravāpsyatha.
14. aham vaḥ kāmaye sarvāḥ bhāryāḥ mama bhaviṣyatha
mānuṣaḥ tyajyatām bhāvaḥ dīrgham āyuḥ avāpsyatha
14. aham vaḥ sarvāḥ mama bhāryāḥ bhaviṣyatha
mānuṣaḥ bhāvaḥ tyajyatām dīrgham āyuḥ avāpsyatha
14. I desire all of you; you will become my wives. Abandon your human nature (bhāva), and you will obtain a long life.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वायोरक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
अपहास्य ततो वाक्यं कन्याशतमथाब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā vāyorakliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
apahāsya tato vākyaṃ kanyāśatamathābravīt.
15. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā vāyoḥ akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
apahāsya tataḥ vākyam kanyāśatam atha abravīt
15. akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ vāyoḥ tasya tat vacanam śrutvā tataḥ
(tasya) vākyam apahāsya atha kanyāśatam abravīt
15. Having heard those words of Vāyu, whose deeds were effortless, the hundred maidens then laughed at his statement and spoke.
अन्तश्चरसि भूतानां सर्वेषां त्वं सुरोत्तम ।
प्रभावज्ञाश्च ते सर्वाः किमस्मानवमन्यसे ॥१६॥
16. antaścarasi bhūtānāṃ sarveṣāṃ tvaṃ surottama ,
prabhāvajñāśca te sarvāḥ kimasmānavamanyase.
16. antaḥ carasi bhūtānām sarveṣām tvam surottama
prabhāvajñāḥ ca te sarvāḥ kim asmān avamanyase
16. surottama! tvam sarveṣām bhūtānām antaḥ carasi.
ca sarvāḥ te prabhāvajñāḥ.
kim asmān avamanyase?
16. O best of gods, you move within all beings. All of us know your power (prabhāva). Why, then, do you despise us?
कुशनाभसुताः सर्वाः समर्थास्त्वां सुरोत्तम ।
स्थानाच्च्यावयितुं देवं रक्षामस्तु तपो वयम् ॥१७॥
17. kuśanābhasutāḥ sarvāḥ samarthāstvāṃ surottama ,
sthānāccyāvayituṃ devaṃ rakṣāmastu tapo vayam.
17. kuśanābhasutāḥ sarvāḥ samarthāḥ tvām surottama
sthānāt cyāvayitum devam rakṣāmaḥ tu tapaḥ vayam
17. surottama! vayam sarvāḥ kuśanābhasutāḥ (ca) tvām devam sthānāt cyāvayitum samarthāḥ.
tu tapaḥ rakṣāmaḥ.
17. O best of gods, all of us are daughters of Kuśanābha and are capable of displacing you from your position. Indeed, we are protecting our spiritual austerities (tapas).
मा भूत् स कालो दुर्मेधः पितरं सत्यवादिनम् ।
नावमन्यस्व धर्मेण स्वयं वरमुपास्महे ॥१८॥
18. mā bhūt sa kālo durmedhaḥ pitaraṃ satyavādinam ,
nāvamanyasva dharmeṇa svayaṃ varamupāsmahe.
18. mā bhūt saḥ kālaḥ durmedhaḥ pitaram satyavādinam
na avamanyasva dharmeṇa svayam varam upāsmahe
18. durmedhaḥ saḥ kālaḥ mā bhūt (yadā tvaṃ) satyavādinam pitaram
na avamanyasva (api tu) dharmeṇa svayam varam upāsmahe
18. O dull-witted one, may that time never come when you disrespect your truthful father. It is by our inherent duty (dharma) that we ourselves seek a suitable groom.
पिता हि प्रभुरस्माकं दैवतं परमं हि सः ।
यस्य नो दास्यति पिता स नो भर्ता भविष्यति ॥१९॥
19. pitā hi prabhurasmākaṃ daivataṃ paramaṃ hi saḥ ,
yasya no dāsyati pitā sa no bhartā bhaviṣyati.
19. pitā hi prabhuḥ asmākam daivatam paramam hi saḥ
yasya naḥ dāsyati pitā saḥ naḥ bhartā bhaviṣyati
19. pitā asmākam prabhuḥ hi saḥ hi paramam daivatam (asti)
yasya naḥ pitā dāsyati saḥ naḥ bhartā bhaviṣyati
19. For a father is indeed our lord; he is truly our supreme deity. The one whom our father will give to us will be our husband.
तासां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वायुः परमकोपनः ।
प्रविश्य सर्वगात्राणि बभञ्ज भगवान्प्रभुः ॥२०॥
20. tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā vāyuḥ paramakopanaḥ ,
praviśya sarvagātrāṇi babhañja bhagavānprabhuḥ.
20. tāsām tat vacanam śrutvā vāyuḥ paramakopanaḥ
praviśya sarvagātrāṇi babhañja bhagavān prabhuḥ
20. tāsām tat vacanam śrutvā bhagavān prabhuḥ
paramakopanaḥ vāyuḥ sarvagātrāṇi praviśya babhañja
20. Having heard those words from them, the divine Lord Vāyu, who was exceedingly wrathful, entered all their limbs and broke them.
ताः कन्या वायुना भग्ना विविशुर्नृपतेर्गृहम् ।
दृष्ट्वा भग्नास्तदा राजा संभ्रान्त इदमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. tāḥ kanyā vāyunā bhagnā viviśurnṛpatergṛham ,
dṛṣṭvā bhagnāstadā rājā saṃbhrānta idamabravīt.
21. tāḥ kanyāḥ vāyunā bhagnāḥ viviśuḥ nṛpateḥ gṛham
dṛṣṭvā bhagnāḥ tadā rājā saṁbhrāntaḥ idam abravīt
21. vāyunā bhagnāḥ tāḥ kanyāḥ nṛpateḥ gṛham viviśuḥ
tadā rājā bhagnāḥ dṛṣṭvā saṁbhrāntaḥ idam abravīt
21. Those maidens, broken by Vāyu, entered the king's house. Seeing them thus shattered, the king was bewildered and spoke these words.
किमिदं कथ्यतां पुत्र्यः को धर्ममवमन्यते ।
कुब्जाः केन कृताः सर्वा वेष्टन्त्यो नाभिभाषथ ॥२२॥
22. kimidaṃ kathyatāṃ putryaḥ ko dharmamavamanyate ,
kubjāḥ kena kṛtāḥ sarvā veṣṭantyo nābhibhāṣatha.
22. kim idam kathyatām putryaḥ kaḥ dharmam avamanyate
kubjāḥ kena kṛtāḥ sarvāḥ veṣṭantyaḥ na abhibhāṣatha
22. putryaḥ kim idam kathyatām kaḥ dharmam avamanyate
kena sarvāḥ kubjāḥ kṛtāḥ veṣṭantyaḥ na abhibhāṣatha
22. What is this? Tell me, daughters! Who disrespects the natural law (dharma)? By whom have all of you been made hunchbacked? Why do you not speak, even though you surround me?
