अथोवाच महातेजा हरिराजो महाबलः ।
किमियं व्यथिता सेना मूढवातेव नौर्जले ॥१॥

1. Then the greatly radiant and mighty king of monkeys (Sugrīva) said: 'Why is this army agitated, like a ship caught in a confused wind on the water?'
सुग्रीवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वालिपुत्रो ऽङ्गदो ऽब्रवीत् ।
न त्वं पश्यसि रामं च लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम् ॥२॥
2. sugrīvasya vacaḥ śrutvā vāliputro'ṅgado'bravīt ,
na tvaṃ paśyasi rāmaṃ ca lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābalam.

2. Having heard Sugrīva's words, Aṅgada, the son of Vāli, spoke: 'You do not see Rāma and the mighty Lakṣmaṇa.'
शरजालाचितौ वीराव् उभौ दशरथात्मजौ ।
शरतल्पे महात्मानौ शयानौ रुधिरोक्षितौ ॥३॥

3. Both sons of Daśaratha, the two heroes, the great-souled ones, are lying on a bed of arrows, covered by a net of arrows and drenched in blood.
अथाब्रवीद्वानरेन्द्रः सुग्रीवः पुत्रमङ्गदम् ।
नानिमित्तमिदं मन्ये भवितव्यं भयेन तु ॥४॥
4. athābravīdvānarendraḥ sugrīvaḥ putramaṅgadam ,
nānimittamidaṃ manye bhavitavyaṃ bhayena tu.

4. Then, Sugriva, the king of the monkeys, spoke to his son Angada: "I do not think this is without cause; indeed, it must be due to fear."
विषण्णवदना ह्येते त्यक्तप्रहरणा दिशः ।
प्रपलायन्ति हरयस्त्रासादुत्फुल्ललोचनाः ॥५॥
5. viṣaṇṇavadanā hyete tyaktapraharaṇā diśaḥ ,
prapalāyanti harayastrāsādutphullalocanāḥ.

5. Indeed, these monkeys, with dejected faces and having abandoned their weapons, are fleeing in all directions, their eyes wide open with fear.
अन्योन्यस्य न लज्जन्ते न निरीक्षन्ति पृष्ठतः ।
विप्रकर्षन्ति चान्योन्यं पतितं लङ्घयन्ति च ॥६॥
6. anyonyasya na lajjante na nirīkṣanti pṛṣṭhataḥ ,
viprakarṣanti cānyonyaṃ patitaṃ laṅghayanti ca.

viprakarṣanti ca anyonyam patitam laṅghayanti ca

6. They are not ashamed of each other, nor do they look back. They push each other away and even step over those who have fallen.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे वीरो गदापाणिर्विभीषणः ।
सुग्रीवं वर्धयामास राघवं च निरैक्षत ॥७॥
7. etasminnantare vīro gadāpāṇirvibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
sugrīvaṃ vardhayāmāsa rāghavaṃ ca niraikṣata.
7. etasmin antare vīraḥ gadāpāṇiḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ
sugrīvam vardhayāmāsa rāghavam ca niraikṣata

7. At that moment, the heroic Vibhishana, mace in hand, encouraged Sugriva and looked towards Rama.
विभीषणं तं सुग्रीवो दृष्ट्वा वानरभीषणम् ।
ऋक्षराजं समीपस्थं जाम्बवन्तमुवाच ह ॥८॥
8. vibhīṣaṇaṃ taṃ sugrīvo dṛṣṭvā vānarabhīṣaṇam ,
ṛkṣarājaṃ samīpasthaṃ jāmbavantamuvāca ha.

8. Seeing Vibhishana, who was terrifying to the monkeys, Sugriva then spoke to Jambavan, the king of the bears, who was standing nearby.
विभीषणो ऽयं संप्राप्तो यं दृष्ट्वा वानरर्षभाः ।
विद्रवन्ति परित्रस्ता रावणात्मजशङ्कया ॥९॥
9. vibhīṣaṇo'yaṃ saṃprāpto yaṃ dṛṣṭvā vānararṣabhāḥ ,
vidravanti paritrastā rāvaṇātmajaśaṅkayā.

9. "This is Vibhishana who has arrived, and seeing him, the leading monkeys flee, utterly terrified, suspecting him to be Ravana's son."
शीघ्रमेतान् सुवित्रस्तान्बहुधा विप्रधावितान् ।
पर्यवस्थापयाख्याहि विभीषणमुपस्थितम् ॥१०॥
10. śīghrametān suvitrastānbahudhā vipradhāvitān ,
paryavasthāpayākhyāhi vibhīṣaṇamupasthitam.

10. "Quickly calm down these greatly terrified monkeys who have scattered in many directions, and tell them that Vibhishana is present."
सुग्रीवेणैवमुक्तस्तु जाम्बवानृक्षपार्थिवः ।
वानरान् सान्त्वयामास संनिवर्त्य प्रहावतः ॥११॥
11. sugrīveṇaivamuktastu jāmbavānṛkṣapārthivaḥ ,
vānarān sāntvayāmāsa saṃnivartya prahāvataḥ.

11. When Sugriva had spoken to him in this way, Jambavan, the king of the bears, stopped the monkeys from their flight and comforted them.
ते निवृत्ताः पुनः सर्वे वानरास्त्यक्तसंभ्रमाः ।
ऋक्षराजवचः श्रुत्वा तं च दृष्ट्वा विभीषणम् ॥१२॥
12. te nivṛttāḥ punaḥ sarve vānarāstyaktasaṃbhramāḥ ,
ṛkṣarājavacaḥ śrutvā taṃ ca dṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇam.
12. te nivṛttāḥ punaḥ sarve vānarāḥ tyakta-saṃbhramāḥ
ṛkṣa-rāja-vacaḥ śrutvā tam ca dṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇam
12. ṛkṣa-rāja-vacaḥ śrutvā tam ca vibhīṣaṇam dṛṣṭvā
tyakta-saṃbhramāḥ te sarve vānarāḥ punaḥ nivṛttāḥ
12. They, all the monkeys, free from agitation, turned back again. They had heard the words of the king of the bears (ṛkṣarāja) and had seen Vibhīṣaṇa.
विभीषणस्तु रामस्य दृष्ट्वा गात्रं शरैश्चितम् ।
लक्ष्मणस्य च धर्मात्मा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः ॥१३॥
13. vibhīṣaṇastu rāmasya dṛṣṭvā gātraṃ śaraiścitam ,
lakṣmaṇasya ca dharmātmā babhūva vyathitendriyaḥ.
13. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu rāmasya dṛṣṭvā gātram śaraiḥ citam
lakṣmaṇasya ca dharmātmā babhūva vyathita-indriyaḥ
13. tu dharmātmā vibhīṣaṇaḥ rāmasya śaraiḥ citam gātram dṛṣṭvā
ca lakṣmaṇasya (gātram) (dṛṣṭvā) vyathitendriyaḥ babhūva
13. But Vibhīṣaṇa, a man of righteous nature (dharmātmā), seeing Rāma's body covered with arrows, and also Lakṣmaṇa's, became distressed in his senses.
जलक्लिन्नेन हस्तेन तयोर्नेत्रे प्रमृज्य च ।
शोकसंपीडितमना रुरोद विललाप च ॥१४॥
14. jalaklinnena hastena tayornetre pramṛjya ca ,
śokasaṃpīḍitamanā ruroda vilalāpa ca.
14. jala-klinnena hastena tayoḥ netre pramṛjya
ca śoka-saṃpīḍita-manāḥ ruroda vilalāpa ca

14. And having wiped their eyes with a hand moistened with water, his mind afflicted by sorrow (śoka), he wept and lamented.
इमौ तौ सत्त्वसंपन्नौ विक्रान्तौ प्रियसंयुगौ ।
इमामवस्थां गमितौ राकसैः कूटयोधिभिः ॥१५॥
15. imau tau sattvasaṃpannau vikrāntau priyasaṃyugau ,
imāmavasthāṃ gamitau rākasaiḥ kūṭayodhibhiḥ.
15. imau tau sattva-sampannau vikrāntau priya-saṃyugau
imām avasthām gamitau rākṣasaiḥ kūṭa-yodhibhiḥ
15. imau tau sattva-sampannau vikrāntau priya-saṃyugau
(puruṣau) kūṭa-yodhibhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ imām avasthām gamitau
15. These two, full of courage (sattva), valiant, and fond of battle, have been brought to this state by the demons (rākṣas) who fight deceitfully.
भ्रातुः पुत्रेण मे तेन दुष्पुत्रेण दुरात्मना ।
राक्षस्या जिह्मया बुद्ध्या छलिताव् ऋजुविक्रमौ ॥१६॥
16. bhrātuḥ putreṇa me tena duṣputreṇa durātmanā ,
rākṣasyā jihmayā buddhyā chalitāv ṛjuvikramau.
16. bhrātuḥ putreṇa me tena duṣputreṇa durātmanā
rākṣasyā jihmayā buddhyā chalitau ṛjuvikramau
16. ṛjuvikramau chalitau me bhrātuḥ putreṇa tena

16. Those two, straightforward in their prowess, were deceived by my brother's son - that wicked, evil-minded fellow - through a crooked, demonic intellect.
शरैरिमावलं विद्धौ रुधिरेण समुक्षितौ ।
वसुधायामिम सुप्तौ दृश्येते शल्यकाविव ॥१७॥
17. śarairimāvalaṃ viddhau rudhireṇa samukṣitau ,
vasudhāyāmima suptau dṛśyete śalyakāviva.

vasudhāyām imau suptau dṛśyete śalyakau iva

17. These two, completely pierced by arrows and bathed in blood, are seen lying on the earth like two porcupines.
ययोर्वीर्यमुपाश्रित्य प्रतिष्ठा काङ्क्षिता मया ।
ताव् उभौ देहनाशाय प्रसुप्तौ पुरुषर्षभौ ॥१८॥
18. yayorvīryamupāśritya pratiṣṭhā kāṅkṣitā mayā ,
tāv ubhau dehanāśāya prasuptau puruṣarṣabhau.

tau ubhau dehanāśāya prasuptau puruṣarṣabhau

18. I had desired stability, relying on whose valor. Those two, both chiefs among men, are now deeply fallen, leading to their bodily destruction.
जीवन्नद्य विपन्नो ऽस्मि नष्टराज्यमनोरथः ।
प्राप्तप्रतिज्ञश्च रिपुः सकामो रावणः कृतः ॥१९॥
19. jīvannadya vipanno'smi naṣṭarājyamanorathaḥ ,
prāptapratijñaśca ripuḥ sakāmo rāvaṇaḥ kṛtaḥ.
19. jīvan adya vipannaḥ asmi naṣṭarājyamanorathaḥ
prāptapratijñaḥ ca ripuḥ sakāmaḥ rāvaṇaḥ kṛtaḥ
19. adya jīvan naṣṭarājyamanorathaḥ vipannaḥ asmi
ca ripuḥ rāvaṇaḥ prāptapratijñaḥ sakāmaḥ kṛtaḥ
19. Though I live today, I am ruined, my aspirations for the kingdom are destroyed. And the enemy Ravana has had his vow fulfilled and is now satisfied.
एवं विलपमानं तं परिष्वज्य विभीषणम् ।
सुग्रीवः सत्त्वसंपन्नो हरिराजो ऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ vilapamānaṃ taṃ pariṣvajya vibhīṣaṇam ,
sugrīvaḥ sattvasaṃpanno harirājo'bravīdidam.
20. evam vilapamānam tam pariṣvajya vibhīṣaṇam
sugrīvaḥ sattvasampannaḥ harirājaḥ abravīt idam
20. evam vilapamānam tam vibhīṣaṇam pariṣvajya
sattvasampannaḥ harirājaḥ sugrīvaḥ idam abravīt
20. Embracing Vibhīṣaṇa, who was thus lamenting, Sugrīva, the king of monkeys, endowed with great courage, said this.
राज्यं प्राप्स्यसि धर्मज्ञ लङ्कायां नात्र संशयः ।
रावणः सह पुत्रेण स राज्यं नेह लप्स्यते ॥२१॥
21. rājyaṃ prāpsyasi dharmajña laṅkāyāṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ ,
rāvaṇaḥ saha putreṇa sa rājyaṃ neha lapsyate.
21. rājyam prāpsyasi dharmajña laṅkāyām na atra saṃśayaḥ
rāvaṇaḥ saha putreṇa sa rājyam na iha lapsyate
21. dharmajña laṅkāyām rājyam prāpsyasi atra saṃśayaḥ
na rāvaṇaḥ sa putreṇa sa rājyam iha na lapsyate
21. O knower of (dharma), you will certainly obtain the kingdom of Laṅkā; there is no doubt about this. Rāvaṇa, along with his son, will not attain sovereignty here.
शरसंपीडितावेताव् उभौ राघवलक्ष्मणौ ।
त्यक्त्वा मोहं वधिष्येते सगणं रावणं रणे ॥२२॥
22. śarasaṃpīḍitāvetāv ubhau rāghavalakṣmaṇau ,
tyaktvā mohaṃ vadhiṣyete sagaṇaṃ rāvaṇaṃ raṇe.
22. śarasampīḍitau etau ubhau rāghavalakṣmaṇau
tyaktvā moham vadhiṣyete sagaṇam rāvaṇam raṇe
22. śarasampīḍitau etau ubhau rāghavalakṣmaṇau
moham tyaktvā rane sagaṇam rāvaṇam vadhiṣyete
22. These two, both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, even though severely afflicted by arrows, will abandon their unconsciousness and slay Rāvaṇa along with his entire retinue in battle.
तमेवं सान्त्वयित्वा तु समाश्वास्य च राक्षसं ।
सुषेणं श्वशुरं पार्श्वे सुग्रीवस्तमुवाच ह ॥२३॥
23. tamevaṃ sāntvayitvā tu samāśvāsya ca rākṣasaṃ ,
suṣeṇaṃ śvaśuraṃ pārśve sugrīvastamuvāca ha.
23. tam evam sāntvayitvā tu samāśvāsya ca rākṣasam
suṣeṇam śvaśuram pārśve sugrīvaḥ tam uvāca ha
23. evam tam rākṣasam sāntvayitvā ca samāśvāsya tu
sugrīvaḥ pārśve śvaśuram suṣeṇam tam uvāca ha
23. Having thus consoled and comforted that demon (Vibhīṣaṇa), Sugrīva then addressed his father-in-law, Suṣeṇa, who was at his side.
सह शूरैर्हरिगणैर्लब्धसंज्ञावरिंदमौ ।
गच्छ त्वं भ्रातरौ गृह्य किष्किन्धां रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥२४॥
24. saha śūrairharigaṇairlabdhasaṃjñāvariṃdamau ,
gaccha tvaṃ bhrātarau gṛhya kiṣkindhāṃ rāmalakṣmaṇau.
24. saha śūraiḥ harigaṇaiḥ labdhasaṃjña arindamau gaccha
tvaṃ bhrātarau gṛhya kiṣkindhāṃ rāmalakṣmaṇau
24. You go to Kiṣkindhā, taking the two brothers Rama and Lakshmana, those renowned subduers of enemies, along with the brave hosts of monkeys.
अहं तु रावणं हत्वा सपुत्रं सहबान्धवम् ।
मैथिलीमानयिष्यामि शक्रो नष्टामिव श्रियम् ॥२५॥
25. ahaṃ tu rāvaṇaṃ hatvā saputraṃ sahabāndhavam ,
maithilīmānayiṣyāmi śakro naṣṭāmiva śriyam.
25. ahaṃ tu rāvaṇaṃ hatvā saputraṃ sahabāndhavam
maithilīm ānayiṣyāmi śakraḥ naṣṭām iva śriyam
25. But I, after killing Ravana along with his sons and kinsmen, will bring back Maithili, just as Indra restores lost prosperity (śrī).
श्रुत्वैतद्वानरेन्द्रस्य सुषेणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
देवासुरं महायुद्धमनुभूतं सुदारुणम् ॥२६॥
26. śrutvaitadvānarendrasya suṣeṇo vākyamabravīt ,
devāsuraṃ mahāyuddhamanubhūtaṃ sudāruṇam.
26. śrutvā etat vānarendrasya suṣeṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
devāsuram mahāyuddham anubhūtam sudāruṇam
26. Having heard this, Suṣeṇa spoke these words to the king of monkeys (Sugriva): 'The exceedingly terrible great war between the gods and asuras has been experienced (by me/us).'
तदा स्म दानवा देवाञ् शरसंस्पर्शकोविदाः ।
निजघ्नुः शस्त्रविदुषश्छादयन्तो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥२७॥
27. tadā sma dānavā devāñ śarasaṃsparśakovidāḥ ,
nijaghnuḥ śastraviduṣaśchādayanto muhurmuhuḥ.
27. tadā sma dānavāḥ devān śarasaṃsparśakovidaḥ
nijaghnuḥ śastraviduṣaḥ chādayantaḥ muhurmuhuḥ
27. At that time, the Danavas (demons), skilled in arrow-combat, repeatedly struck down and overwhelmed the gods who were proficient in weaponry.
तानार्तान्नष्टसंज्ञांश्च परासूंश्च बृहस्पतिः ।
विध्याभिर्मन्त्रयुक्ताभिरोषधीभिश्चिकित्सति ॥२८॥
28. tānārtānnaṣṭasaṃjñāṃśca parāsūṃśca bṛhaspatiḥ ,
vidhyābhirmantrayuktābhiroṣadhībhiścikitsati.
28. tān ārtān naṣṭasaṃjñān ca parāsūn ca bṛhaspatiḥ
vidyābhiḥ mantrayuktābhiḥ oṣadhībhiḥ ca cikitsati
28. bṛhaspatiḥ tān ārtān naṣṭasaṃjñān ca parāsūn ca
mantrayuktābhiḥ vidyābhiḥ oṣadhībhiḥ ca cikitsati
28. Brihaspati treats those who are suffering, have lost consciousness, and are lifeless, using specialized knowledge (vidyā) combined with potent incantations (mantra) and medicinal herbs.
तान्यौषधान्यानयितुं क्षीरोदं यान्तु सागरम् ।
जवेन वानराः शीघ्रं संपाति पनसादयः ॥२९॥
29. tānyauṣadhānyānayituṃ kṣīrodaṃ yāntu sāgaram ,
javena vānarāḥ śīghraṃ saṃpāti panasādayaḥ.
29. tāni oṣadhīni ānayitum kṣīrodam yāntu sāgaram
javena vānarāḥ śīghram saṃpāti panasādayaḥ
29. saṃpāti panasādayaḥ vānarāḥ javena śīghram
kṣīrodam sāgaram tāni oṣadhīni ānayitum yāntu
29. Let those monkeys, especially Sampati, Panasa, and others, quickly go with speed to the Milk Ocean (kṣīroda) to bring those medicinal herbs.
हरयस्तु विजानन्ति पार्वती ते महौषधी ।
संजीवकरणीं दिव्यां विशल्यां देवनिर्मिताम् ॥३०॥
30. harayastu vijānanti pārvatī te mahauṣadhī ,
saṃjīvakaraṇīṃ divyāṃ viśalyāṃ devanirmitām.
30. harayaḥ tu vijānanti pārvati te mahauṣadhīm
saṃjīvakaraṇīm divyām viśalyām devanirmitām
30. pārvati harayaḥ tu te divyām saṃjīvakaraṇīm
viśalyām devanirmitām mahauṣadhīm vijānanti
30. But, O Pārvatī, the monkeys know your great medicinal herb: the divine, life-restoring, arrow-removing (viśalyā) one, created by the gods.
चन्द्रश्च नाम द्रोणश्च पर्वतौ सागरोत्तमे ।
अमृतं यत्र मथितं तत्र ते परमौषधी ॥३१॥

31. Two mountains named Candra and Droṇa are located in the most excellent part of the ocean (sāgarottama), where the nectar (amṛta) was churned. There, your supreme medicinal herb is found.
ते तत्र निहिते देवैः पर्वते परमौषधी ।
अयं वायुसुतो राजन् हनूमांस्तत्र गच्छतु ॥३२॥
32. te tatra nihite devaiḥ parvate paramauṣadhī ,
ayaṃ vāyusuto rājan hanūmāṃstatra gacchatu.

32. O King, on that mountain, two supremely potent medicinal herbs were placed by the gods. Let this Hanumān, the son of Vāyu, go there.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे वायुर्मेघांश्चापि सविद्युतः ।
पर्यस्यन् सागरे तोयं कम्पयन्निव पर्वतान् ॥३३॥
33. etasminnantare vāyurmeghāṃścāpi savidyutaḥ ,
paryasyan sāgare toyaṃ kampayanniva parvatān.
33. etasmin antare vāyuḥ meghān ca api savidyutaḥ
paryasyan sāgare toyam kampayan iva parvatān

33. In the meantime, Vāyu, scattering water into the ocean and also clouds accompanied by lightning, was making the mountains tremble.
महता पक्षवातेन सर्वे द्वीपमहाद्रुमाः ।
निपेतुर्भग्नविटपाः समूला लवणाम्भसि ॥३४॥
34. mahatā pakṣavātena sarve dvīpamahādrumāḥ ,
nipeturbhagnaviṭapāḥ samūlā lavaṇāmbhasi.

34. By the mighty wind generated by his wings, all the great trees on the islands, with their branches broken and roots exposed, fell into the salty ocean.
अभवन्पन्नगास्त्रस्ता भोगिनस्तत्रवासिनः ।
शीघ्रं सर्वाणि यादांसि जग्मुश्च लवणार्णवम् ॥३५॥
35. abhavanpannagāstrastā bhoginastatravāsinaḥ ,
śīghraṃ sarvāṇi yādāṃsi jagmuśca lavaṇārṇavam.

35. The hooded serpents residing there became terrified. And all the aquatic creatures quickly went to the salty ocean.
ततो मुहूर्तद्गरुडं वैनतेयं महाबलम् ।
वानरा ददृशुः सर्वे ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम् ॥३६॥
36. tato muhūrtadgaruḍaṃ vainateyaṃ mahābalam ,
vānarā dadṛśuḥ sarve jvalantamiva pāvakam.
36. tataḥ muhūrtāt garuḍam vainateyam mahābalam
vānarāḥ dadṛśuḥ sarve jvalantam iva pāvakam
36. Then, in a moment, all the monkeys saw Garuḍa, the greatly powerful son of Vinatā, blazing like fire.
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य नागास्ते विप्रदुद्रुवुः ।
यैस्तौ सत्पुरुषौ बद्धौ शरभूतैर्महाबलौ ॥३७॥
37. tamāgatamabhiprekṣya nāgāste vipradudruvuḥ ,
yaistau satpuruṣau baddhau śarabhūtairmahābalau.
37. tam āgatam abhiprekṣya nāgāḥ te vipradudruvuḥ
yaiḥ tau satpuruṣau baddhau śarabhūtaiḥ mahābalau
37. Upon seeing him arrive, those serpents, who had bound those two immensely powerful noble persons (puruṣa) with arrow-like forms, fled away.
ततः सुपर्णः काकुत्स्थौ दृष्ट्वा प्रत्यभिनन्द्य च ।
विममर्श च पाणिभ्यां मुखे चन्द्रसमप्रभे ॥३८॥
38. tataḥ suparṇaḥ kākutsthau dṛṣṭvā pratyabhinandya ca ,
vimamarśa ca pāṇibhyāṃ mukhe candrasamaprabhe.

38. Then Suparṇa, having seen the two princes of the Kakutstha lineage and greeted them, gently stroked their moon-like radiant faces with both his hands.
वैनतेयेन संस्पृष्टास्तयोः संरुरुहुर्व्रणाः ।
सुवर्णे च तनू स्निग्धे तयोराशु बभूवतुः ॥३९॥
39. vainateyena saṃspṛṣṭāstayoḥ saṃruruhurvraṇāḥ ,
suvarṇe ca tanū snigdhe tayorāśu babhūvatuḥ.
39. vainateyena samspṛṣṭāḥ tayoḥ sam ruruhuḥ vraṇāḥ
suvarṇe ca tanū snigdhe tayoḥ āśu babhūvatuḥ
39. Their wounds, once touched by the son of Vinatā, quickly healed. And their bodies instantly became radiant and smooth.
तेजो वीर्यं बलं चौज उत्साहश्च महागुणाः ।
प्रदर्शनं च बुद्धिश्च स्मृतिश्च द्विगुणं तयोः ॥४०॥
40. tejo vīryaṃ balaṃ cauja utsāhaśca mahāguṇāḥ ,
pradarśanaṃ ca buddhiśca smṛtiśca dviguṇaṃ tayoḥ.

40. Radiance, prowess, strength, vitality, enthusiasm, and great virtues, along with keen perception, intellect, and memory - all these are doubled in those two.
ताव् उत्थाप्य महावीर्यौ गरुडो वासवोपमौ ।
उभौ तौ सस्वजे हृष्टौ रामश्चैनमुवाच ह ॥४१॥
41. tāv utthāpya mahāvīryau garuḍo vāsavopamau ,
ubhau tau sasvaje hṛṣṭau rāmaścainamuvāca ha.

41. Garuḍa, having lifted up those two exceedingly valorous heroes, who were like Indra, embraced both of them while they were joyful. And Rama then spoke to him.
भवत्प्रसादाद्व्यसनं रावणिप्रभवं महत् ।
आवामिह व्यतिक्रान्तौ शीघ्रं च बलिनौ कृतौ ॥४२॥
42. bhavatprasādādvyasanaṃ rāvaṇiprabhavaṃ mahat ,
āvāmiha vyatikrāntau śīghraṃ ca balinau kṛtau.
42. bhavatprasādāt vyasanam rāvaṇiprabhavam mahat
āvām iha vyatikrāntau śīghram ca balinau kṛtau

42. By your grace, we two have here overcome the great calamity born of Rāvaṇa's son, and have been quickly made strong.
यथा तातं दशरथं यथाजं च पितामहम् ।
तथा भवन्तमासाद्य हृषयं मे प्रसीदति ॥४३॥
43. yathā tātaṃ daśarathaṃ yathājaṃ ca pitāmaham ,
tathā bhavantamāsādya hṛṣayaṃ me prasīdati.

tathā bhavantam āsādya hṛṣayam me prasīdati

43. Just as I regard father Daśaratha and grandfather Aja, so too, by having met you, my heart is greatly pleased.
को भवान् रूपसंपन्नो दिव्यस्रगनुलेपनः ।
वसानो विरजे वस्त्रे दिव्याभरणभूषितः ॥४४॥
44. ko bhavān rūpasaṃpanno divyasraganulepanaḥ ,
vasāno viraje vastre divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ.

44. Who are you, endowed with a beautiful form, adorned with divine garlands and anointments, wearing spotless garments, and embellished with divine ornaments?
तमुवाच महातेजा वैनतेयो महाबलः ।
पतत्रिराजः प्रीतात्मा हर्षपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥४५॥
45. tamuvāca mahātejā vainateyo mahābalaḥ ,
patatrirājaḥ prītātmā harṣaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ.

45. The greatly effulgent son of Vinatā (Garuda), the immensely powerful king of birds, whose soul was pleased and whose eyes were restless with joy, spoke to him.
अहं सखा ते काकुत्स्थ प्रियः प्राणो बहिश्चरः ।
गरुत्मानिह संप्राप्तो युवयोः साह्यकारणात् ॥४६॥
46. ahaṃ sakhā te kākutstha priyaḥ prāṇo bahiścaraḥ ,
garutmāniha saṃprāpto yuvayoḥ sāhyakāraṇāt.
46. aham sakhā te kākutstha priyaḥ prāṇaḥ bahiścaraḥ
garutmān iha saṃprāptaḥ yuvayoḥ sāhyakāraṇāt
46. aham te priyaḥ sakhā bahiścaraḥ prāṇaḥ kākutstha
garutmān iha yuvayoḥ sāhyakāraṇāt saṃprāptaḥ
46. “O Kākutstha, I am your dear friend, your very life-breath (prāṇa) moving outside your body. Garuda has arrived here for the purpose of helping you two.”
असुरा वा महावीर्या दानवा वा महाबलाः ।
सुराश्चापि सगन्धर्वाः पुरस्कृत्य शतक्रतुम् ॥४७॥
47. asurā vā mahāvīryā dānavā vā mahābalāḥ ,
surāścāpi sagandharvāḥ puraskṛtya śatakratum.

surāḥ ca api sagandharvāḥ puraskṛtya śatakratum

47. Neither the greatly valiant asuras, nor the immensely powerful dānavas, nor even the gods accompanied by the gandharvas, with Indra (śatakratu) at their head...
नेमं मोक्षयितुं शक्ताः शरबन्धं सुदारुणम् ।
माया बलादिन्द्रजिता निर्मितं क्रूरकर्मणा ॥४८॥
48. nemaṃ mokṣayituṃ śaktāḥ śarabandhaṃ sudāruṇam ,
māyā balādindrajitā nirmitaṃ krūrakarmaṇā.
48. na imam mokṣayitum śaktāḥ śarabandham sudāruṇam
māyā balāt indrajitā nirmitam krūrakarmaṇā
48. na śaktāḥ imam sudāruṇam śarabandham mokṣayitum
krūrakarmaṇā indrajitā māyā balāt nirmitam
48. No one is able to release [us] from this exceedingly dreadful bond of arrows, which was created by Indrajit, the perpetrator of cruel deeds, through the power of his illusion (māyā).
एते नागाः काद्रवेयास्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राविषोल्बणाः ।
रक्षोमाया प्रभावेन शरा भूत्वा त्वदाश्रिताः ॥४९॥
49. ete nāgāḥ kādraveyāstīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāviṣolbaṇāḥ ,
rakṣomāyā prabhāvena śarā bhūtvā tvadāśritāḥ.
49. ete nāgāḥ kādraveyāḥ tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāviṣolbaṇāḥ
rakṣomāyāḥ prabhāvena śarāḥ bhūtvā tvadāśritāḥ
49. ete kādraveyāḥ tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāviṣolbaṇāḥ nāgāḥ
rakṣomāyāḥ prabhāvena śarāḥ bhūtvā tvadāśritāḥ
49. These serpents, the Kādraveya-s, fierce with sharp fangs and potent venom, have, by the power of the demon's illusion (māyā), become arrows and are now lodged in you.
सभाग्यश्चासि धर्मज्ञ राम सत्यपराक्रम ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा समरे रिपुघातिना ॥५०॥
50. sabhāgyaścāsi dharmajña rāma satyaparākrama ,
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā samare ripughātinā.

lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā samare ripughātinā

50. O Rāma, knower of natural law (dharma), O one of true valor, you are indeed fortunate to be accompanied in battle by your brother Lakṣmaṇa, the slayer of enemies.
इमं श्रुत्वा तु वृत्तान्तं त्वरमाणो ऽहमागतः ।
सहसा युवयोः स्नेहात् सखित्वमनुपालयन् ॥५१॥
51. imaṃ śrutvā tu vṛttāntaṃ tvaramāṇo'hamāgataḥ ,
sahasā yuvayoḥ snehāt sakhitvamanupālayan.
51. imam śrutvā tu vṛttāntam tvaramāṇaḥ aham āgataḥ
sahasā yuvayoḥ snehāt sakhitvam anupālayan

51. Indeed, upon hearing this news, I have arrived here quickly, hastening to uphold the bond of friendship (sakhitva) out of affection for you both.
मोक्षितौ च महाघोरादस्मात् सायकबन्धनात् ।
अप्रमादश्च कर्तव्यो युवाभ्यां नित्यमेव हि ॥५२॥
52. mokṣitau ca mahāghorādasmāt sāyakabandhanāt ,
apramādaśca kartavyo yuvābhyāṃ nityameva hi.
52. mokṣitau ca mahāghorāt asmāt sāyakabandhanāt
apramādaḥ ca kartavyaḥ yuvābhyām nityam eva hi
52. yuvābhyām asmāt mahāghorāt sāyakabandhanāt mokṣitau ca,
nityam eva hi apramādaḥ ca kartavyaḥ.
52. You two have been freed from this dreadful binding by arrows. However, you both must always maintain vigilance.
प्रकृत्या राक्षसाः सर्वे संग्रामे कूटयोधिनः ।
शूराणां शुद्धभावानां भवतामार्जवं बलम् ॥५३॥
53. prakṛtyā rākṣasāḥ sarve saṃgrāme kūṭayodhinaḥ ,
śūrāṇāṃ śuddhabhāvānāṃ bhavatāmārjavaṃ balam.
53. prakṛtyā rākṣasāḥ sarve saṃgrāme kūṭayodhinaḥ
śūrāṇām śuddhabhāvānām bhavatām ārjavam balam
53. prakṛtyā sarve rākṣasāḥ saṃgrāme kūṭayodhinaḥ.
śūrāṇām śuddhabhāvānām bhavatām ārjavam balam.
53. By their very nature (prakṛti), all rākṣasas are deceitful fighters in battle. But for noble and pure-hearted ones like you, straightforwardness is your strength.
तन्न विश्वसितव्यं वो राक्षसानां रणाजिरे ।
एतेनैवोपमानेन नित्यजिह्मा हि राक्षसाः ॥५४॥
54. tanna viśvasitavyaṃ vo rākṣasānāṃ raṇājire ,
etenaivopamānena nityajihmā hi rākṣasāḥ.
54. tat na viśvasitavyam vaḥ rākṣasānām raṇājire
etena eva upamānena nityajihmāḥ hi rākṣasāḥ
54. tat,
vaḥ rākṣasānām raṇājire na viśvasitavyam.
hi rākṣasāḥ etena eva upamānena nityajihmāḥ.
54. Therefore, you should not trust the rākṣasas on the battlefield. For, by this very standard, rākṣasas are inherently always deceitful.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो रामं सुपर्णः सुमहाबलः ।
परिष्वज्य सुहृत्स्निग्धमाप्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥५५॥
55. evamuktvā tato rāmaṃ suparṇaḥ sumahābalaḥ ,
pariṣvajya suhṛtsnigdhamāpraṣṭumupacakrame.
55. evam uktvā tataḥ rāmam suparṇaḥ sumahābalaḥ
pariṣvajya suhṛtsnigdham āpraṣṭum upacakrame
55. evam uktvā,
tataḥ sumahābalaḥ suparṇaḥ rāmam suhṛtsnigdham pariṣvajya āpraṣṭum upacakrame.
55. Having spoken thus, the exceedingly mighty Suparṇa then affectionately embraced Rama, like a friend, and began to take his leave.
सखे राघव धर्मज्ञ रिपूणामपि वत्सल ।
अभ्यनुज्ञातुमिच्छामि गमिष्यामि यथागतम् ॥५६॥
56. sakhe rāghava dharmajña ripūṇāmapi vatsala ,
abhyanujñātumicchāmi gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam.

abhyanujñātum icchāmi gamiṣyāmi yathā āgatam

56. O friend, Rāghava, you who know natural law (dharma) and are affectionate even towards your enemies! I wish to be permitted to depart; I will return the way I came.
बालवृद्धावशेषां तु लङ्कां कृत्वा शरोर्मिभिः ।
रावणं च रिपुं हत्वा सीतां समुपलप्स्यसे ॥५७॥
57. bālavṛddhāvaśeṣāṃ tu laṅkāṃ kṛtvā śarormibhiḥ ,
rāvaṇaṃ ca ripuṃ hatvā sītāṃ samupalapsyase.
57. bālavṛddhāvaśeṣām tu laṅkām kṛtvā śara ūrmibhiḥ
rāvaṇam ca ripum hatvā sītām samupalapsyase
57. śara ūrmibhiḥ bālavṛddhāvaśeṣām laṅkām kṛtvā

57. After rendering Laṅkā with only children and old people remaining, using waves of your arrows, and after killing your enemy Rāvaṇa, you will then recover Sītā.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं सुपर्णः शीघ्रविक्रमः ।
रामं च विरुजं कृत्वा मध्ये तेषां वनौकसाम् ॥५८॥
58. ityevamuktvā vacanaṃ suparṇaḥ śīghravikramaḥ ,
rāmaṃ ca virujaṃ kṛtvā madhye teṣāṃ vanaukasām.
58. iti evam uktvā vacanam suparṇaḥ śīghravikramaḥ
rāmam ca virujam kṛtvā madhye teṣām vanaukasām
58. iti evam vacanam uktvā śīghravikramaḥ suparṇaḥ

58. Having thus spoken, Suparṇa, swift in valor, and having healed Rāma in the midst of those forest-dwellers (vanaukasām)...
प्रदक्षिणं ततः कृत्वा परिष्वज्य च वीर्यवान् ।
जगामाकाशमाविश्य सुपर्णः पवनो यथा ॥५९॥
59. pradakṣiṇaṃ tataḥ kṛtvā pariṣvajya ca vīryavān ,
jagāmākāśamāviśya suparṇaḥ pavano yathā.
59. pradakṣiṇam tataḥ kṛtvā pariṣvajya ca vīryavān
jagāma ākāśam āviśya suparṇaḥ pavanaḥ yathā

59. Then, the powerful (vīryavān) Suparṇa, having circumambulated [Rāma] and embraced [him], entered the sky and departed like the wind.
विरुजौ राघवौ दृष्ट्वा ततो वानरयूथपाः ।
सिंहनादांस्तदा नेदुर्लाङ्गूलं दुधुवुश्च ते ॥६०॥
60. virujau rāghavau dṛṣṭvā tato vānarayūthapāḥ ,
siṃhanādāṃstadā nedurlāṅgūlaṃ dudhuvuśca te.

60. Upon seeing Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa free from wounds, the monkey chiefs then roared loudly, and they wagged their tails.
ततो भेरीः समाजघ्नुर्मृदङ्गांश्च व्यनादयन् ।
दध्मुः शङ्खान् संप्रहृष्टाः क्ष्वेलन्त्यपि यथापुरम् ॥६१॥
61. tato bherīḥ samājaghnurmṛdaṅgāṃśca vyanādayan ,
dadhmuḥ śaṅkhān saṃprahṛṣṭāḥ kṣvelantyapi yathāpuram.
61. tataḥ bherīḥ samājaghnuḥ mṛdaṅgān ca vyanādayan
dadhmuḥ śaṅkhān samprahṛṣṭāḥ kṣvelanti api yathāpuram

vyanādayan śaṅkhān dadhmuḥ api yathāpuram kṣvelanti
61. Then, highly delighted, they beat the kettledrums, sounded the mṛdaṅgas, and blew conches, roaring just as they used to.
आस्फोट्यास्फोट्य विक्रान्ता वानरा नगयोधिनः ।
द्रुमानुत्पाट्य विविधांस्तस्थुः शतसहस्रशः ॥६२॥
62. āsphoṭyāsphoṭya vikrāntā vānarā nagayodhinaḥ ,

62. Having clapped their arms repeatedly, the valiant monkeys, who fight with trees, stood in hundreds of thousands, uprooting various trees.
विसृजन्तो महानादांस्त्रासयन्तो निशाचरान् ।
लङ्काद्वाराण्युपाजग्मुर्योद्धुकामाः प्लवंगमाः ॥६३॥
63. visṛjanto mahānādāṃstrāsayanto niśācarān ,
laṅkādvārāṇyupājagmuryoddhukāmāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ.

laṅkādvārāṇi upājagmuḥ yoddhukāmāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
63. yoddhukāmāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ mahānādān visṛjantaḥ
niśācarān trāsayantaḥ laṅkādvārāṇi upājagmuḥ
63. The monkeys, eager to fight, approached the gates of Laṅkā, letting out mighty roars and terrifying the night-prowlers.
ततस्तु भीमस्तुमुलो निनादो बभूव शाखामृगयूथपानाम् ।
क्षये निदाघस्य यथा घनानां नादः सुभीमो नदतां निशीथे ॥६४॥
64. tatastu bhīmastumulo ninādo babhūva śākhāmṛgayūthapānām ,
kṣaye nidāghasya yathā ghanānāṃ nādaḥ subhīmo nadatāṃ niśīthe.
64. tataḥ tu bhīmaḥ tumulaḥ ninādaḥ
babhūva śākhāmṛgayūthapānām
kṣaye nidāghasya yathā ghanānām
nādaḥ subhīmaḥ nadatām niśīthe

bhīmaḥ tumulaḥ ninādaḥ babhūva

64. Then, a terrible, mighty roar arose from the leaders of the monkey hordes, like the exceedingly dreadful sound of thundering clouds in the deep night at the close of summer.
