राक्षसेन्द्रो ऽभिषिक्तस्तु भ्रातृभ्यां सहितस्तदा ।
ततः प्रदानं राक्षस्या भगिन्याः समचिन्तयत् ॥१॥
1. rākṣasendro'bhiṣiktastu bhrātṛbhyāṃ sahitastadā ,

1. The king of the rākṣasas, having been consecrated along with his two brothers at that time, then contemplated the giving (in marriage) of his demon (rākṣasī) sister.
ददौ तां कालकेयाय दानवेन्द्राय राक्षसीम् ।
स्वसां शूर्पणखां नाम विद्युज्जिह्वाय नामतः ॥२॥
2. dadau tāṃ kālakeyāya dānavendrāya rākṣasīm ,
svasāṃ śūrpaṇakhāṃ nāma vidyujjihvāya nāmataḥ.

2. He gave his sister, the demoness named Śūrpaṇakhā, to the dānava chief named Vidyujjihva, who was a Kālakeya.
अथ दत्त्वा स्वसारं स मृगयां पर्यटन्नृपः ।
तत्रापश्यत्ततो राम मयं नाम दितेः सुतम् ॥३॥
3. atha dattvā svasāraṃ sa mṛgayāṃ paryaṭannṛpaḥ ,
tatrāpaśyattato rāma mayaṃ nāma diteḥ sutam.
3. atha dattvā svasāram saḥ mṛgayām paryaṭan nṛpaḥ
tatra apaśyat tataḥ rāma mayam nāma diteḥ sutam

3. O Rāma, then, after having given his sister, that king, while wandering for hunting, saw there the son of Diti named Maya.
कन्यासहायं तं दृष्ट्वा दशग्रीवो निशाचरः ।
अपृच्छत् को भवनेको निर्मनुष्य मृगे वने ॥४॥
4. kanyāsahāyaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvo niśācaraḥ ,
apṛcchat ko bhavaneko nirmanuṣya mṛge vane.

4. Having seen him accompanied by a maiden, Daśagrīva, the night-wanderer, asked, "Who are you, alone in this uninhabited forest teeming with wild animals?"
मयस्त्वथाब्रवीद् राम पृच्छन्तं तं निशाचरम् ।
श्रूयतां सर्वमाख्यास्ये यथावृत्तमिदं मम ॥५॥
5. mayastvathābravīd rāma pṛcchantaṃ taṃ niśācaram ,
śrūyatāṃ sarvamākhyāsye yathāvṛttamidaṃ mama.
5. mayaḥ tu atha abravīt rāma pṛcchantam tam niśācaram
śrūyatām sarvam ākhyāsye yathāvṛttam idam mama

5. O Rāma, then Maya spoke to that inquiring night-wanderer: "Listen! I will relate my entire story, exactly as it transpired, regarding myself."
हेमा नामाप्सरास्तात श्रुतपूर्वा यदि त्वया ।
दैवतैर्मम सा दत्ता पौलोमीव शतक्रतोः ॥६॥
6. hemā nāmāpsarāstāta śrutapūrvā yadi tvayā ,
daivatairmama sā dattā paulomīva śatakratoḥ.
6. hemā nāma apsarāḥ tāta śrutapūrvā yadi tvayā
daivataiḥ mama sā dattā paulomī iva śatakratoḥ
6. tāta yadi tvayā apsarāḥ hemā nāma śrutapūrvā,
sā mama daivataiḥ dattā,
śatakratoḥ paulomī iva.
6. Dear son, if you have heard of an Apsara named Hema, she was given to me by the gods, just as Paulomi was given to Indra, the lord of a hundred Vedic rituals (yajña).
तस्यां सक्तमनास्तात पञ्चवर्षशतान्यहम् ।
सा च दैवत कार्येण गता वर्षं चतुर्दशम् ॥७॥
7. tasyāṃ saktamanāstāta pañcavarṣaśatānyaham ,
sā ca daivata kāryeṇa gatā varṣaṃ caturdaśam.
7. tasyām saktamanāḥ tāta pañcavarṣaśatāni aham
sā ca daivata kāryeṇa gatā varṣam caturdaśam
7. tāta aham tasyām saktamanāḥ pañcavarṣaśatāni,
ca sā daivata kāryeṇa caturdaśam varṣam gatā.
7. Dear son, I was enamored with her for five hundred years. And she, due to a task of the gods, departed for fourteen years.
तस्याः कृते च हेमायाः सर्वं हेमपुरं मया ।
वज्रवैदूर्यचित्रं च मायया निर्मितं तदा ॥८॥
8. tasyāḥ kṛte ca hemāyāḥ sarvaṃ hemapuraṃ mayā ,
vajravaidūryacitraṃ ca māyayā nirmitaṃ tadā.
8. tasyāḥ kṛte ca hemāyāḥ sarvam hemapuram mayā
vajravaidūryacitram ca māyayā nirmitam tadā
8. ca mayā tadā tasyāḥ hemāyāḥ kṛte sarvam hemapuram vajravaidūryacitram ca māyayā nirmitam.
8. And for Hema's sake, I then constructed the entire city of Hemapura, adorned with diamonds and cat's eye gems, by means of my divine power (māyā).
तत्राहमरतिं विन्दंस्तया हीनः सुदुःखितः ।
तस्मात् पुराद्दुहितरं गृहीत्वा वनमागतः ॥९॥
9. tatrāhamaratiṃ vindaṃstayā hīnaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ ,
tasmāt purādduhitaraṃ gṛhītvā vanamāgataḥ.
9. tatra aham aratim vindan tayā hīnaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ
tasmāt purāt duhitaram gṛhītvā vanam āgataḥ
9. tatra tayā hīnaḥ,
aratim vindan,
suduḥkhitaḥ aham,
tasmāt purāt duhitaram gṛhītvā vanam āgataḥ.
9. There, experiencing restlessness and profoundly distressed due to being separated from her, I left that city and came to the forest, taking my daughter.
इयं ममात्मजा राजंस्तस्याः कुक्षौ विवर्धिता ।
भर्तारमनया सार्धमस्याः प्राप्तो ऽस्मि मार्गितुम् ॥१०॥
10. iyaṃ mamātmajā rājaṃstasyāḥ kukṣau vivardhitā ,
bhartāramanayā sārdhamasyāḥ prāpto'smi mārgitum.
10. iyam mama ātmajā rājan tasyāḥ kukṣau vivardhitā
bhartāram anayā sārdham asyāḥ prāptaḥ asmi mārgitum
10. rājan iyam mama ātmajā tasyāḥ kukṣau vivardhitā
anayā sārdham asyāḥ bhartāram mārgitum asmi prāptaḥ
10. This is my daughter, O king, who was brought up in her mother's womb. I have come with her to seek a husband for her.
कन्यापितृत्वं दुःखं हि नराणां मानकाङ्क्षिणाम् ।
कन्या हि द्वे कुले नित्यं संशये स्थाप्य तिष्ठति ॥११॥
11. kanyāpitṛtvaṃ duḥkhaṃ hi narāṇāṃ mānakāṅkṣiṇām ,
kanyā hi dve kule nityaṃ saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati.
11. kanyāpitṛtvam duḥkham hi narāṇām mānakāṅkṣiṇām
kanyā hi dve kule nityam saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati
11. mānakāṅkṣiṇām narāṇām kanyāpitṛtvam duḥkham hi
kanyā hi nityam dve kule saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati
11. For men who desire honor, being a daughter's father is indeed a sorrow. A daughter always keeps two families in a state of uncertainty.
द्वौ सुतौ तु मम त्वस्यां भार्यायां संबभूवतुः ।
मायावी प्रथमस्तात दुन्दुभिस्तदनन्तरम् ॥१२॥
12. dvau sutau tu mama tvasyāṃ bhāryāyāṃ saṃbabhūvatuḥ ,
māyāvī prathamastāta dundubhistadanantaram.
12. dvau sutau tu mama tu asyām bhāryāyām sambabhūvatuḥ
māyāvī prathamaḥ tāta dundubhiḥ tadanantaram
12. mama tu asyām bhāryāyām dvau sutau sambabhūvatuḥ
tāta māyāvī prathamaḥ dundubhiḥ tadanantaram
12. However, two sons were born to me through this wife: Māyāvī was the first, O dear one, and Dundubhi came thereafter.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं याथातथ्येन पृच्छतः ।
त्वामिदानीं कथं तात जानीयां को भवानिति ॥१३॥
13. etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ yāthātathyena pṛcchataḥ ,
tvāmidānīṃ kathaṃ tāta jānīyāṃ ko bhavāniti.
13. etat te sarvam ākhyātam yāthātathyena pṛcchataḥ
tvām idānīm katham tāta jānīyām kaḥ bhavān iti
13. pṛcchataḥ te etat sarvam yāthātathyena ākhyātam
tāta idānīm tvām kaḥ bhavān iti katham jānīyām
13. All this has been told to you truthfully, as you asked. Now, O dear one, how am I to know who you are?
एवमुक्तो राक्षसेन्द्रो विनीतमिदमब्रवीत् ।
अहं पौलस्त्य तनयो दशग्रीवश्च नामतः ॥१४॥
14. evamukto rākṣasendro vinītamidamabravīt ,
ahaṃ paulastya tanayo daśagrīvaśca nāmataḥ.
14. evam uktaḥ rākṣasendraḥ vinītam idam abravīt
aham paulastya tanayaḥ daśagrīvaḥ ca nāmataḥ
14. evam uktaḥ rākṣasendraḥ vinītam idam abravīt

14. When addressed in this manner, the king of rākṣasas humbly replied, saying, 'I am the son of Pulastya, and my name is Daśagrīva.'
ब्रह्मर्षेस्तं सुतं ज्ञात्वा मयो हर्षमुपागतः ।
दातुं दुहितरं तस्य रोचयामास तत्र वै ॥१५॥
15. brahmarṣestaṃ sutaṃ jñātvā mayo harṣamupāgataḥ ,
dātuṃ duhitaraṃ tasya rocayāmāsa tatra vai.
15. brahmarṣeḥ tam sutam jñātvā mayaḥ harṣam upāgataḥ
dātum duhitaram tasya rocayām āsa tatra vai
15. mayaḥ tam brahmarṣeḥ sutam jñātvā harṣam upāgataḥ
tatra tasya duhitaram dātum vai rocayām āsa
15. Upon realizing him to be the son of the brahmin sage, Maya was filled with joy. He then desired to give his daughter to him there.
प्रहसन्प्राह दैत्येन्द्रो राक्षसेन्द्रमिदं वचः ।
इयं ममात्मजा राजन् हेमयाप्सरसा धृता ।
कन्या मन्दोदरी नाम पत्न्यर्थं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥१६॥
16. prahasanprāha daityendro rākṣasendramidaṃ vacaḥ ,
iyaṃ mamātmajā rājan hemayāpsarasā dhṛtā ,
kanyā mandodarī nāma patnyarthaṃ pratigṛhyatām.
16. prahasan prāha daityendraḥ rākṣasendram
idam vacaḥ iyam mama ātmajā
rājan hemayā apsarasā dhṛtā kanyā
mandodarī nāma patnyartham pratigṛhyatām

16. Smiling, the king of daityas (Maya) spoke these words to the king of rākṣasas: 'This daughter of mine, O king, was conceived by the apsaras Hemā. Let this maiden, named Mandodarī, be accepted as your wife.'
बाढमित्येव तं राम दशग्रीवो ऽभ्यभाषत ।
प्रज्वाल्य तत्र चैवाग्निमकरोत् पाणिसंग्रहम् ॥१७॥
17. bāḍhamityeva taṃ rāma daśagrīvo'bhyabhāṣata ,
prajvālya tatra caivāgnimakarot pāṇisaṃgraham.
17. bāḍham iti eva tam rāma daśagrīvaḥ abhyabhāṣata
prajvālya tatra ca eva agnim akarot pāṇisaṃgraham
17. rāma bāḍham iti eva daśagrīvaḥ tam abhyabhāṣata
ca tatra agnim prajvālya pāṇisaṃgraham akarot
17. Saying, 'So be it!', O Rāma, Daśagrīva then spoke to him. Having kindled a fire there, he performed the ritual of 'taking the hand' (marriage).
न हि तस्य मयो राम शापाभिज्ञस्तपोधनात् ।
विदित्वा तेन सा दत्ता तस्य पैतामहं कुलम् ॥१८॥
18. na hi tasya mayo rāma śāpābhijñastapodhanāt ,
viditvā tena sā dattā tasya paitāmahaṃ kulam.
18. na hi tasya mayaḥ rāma śāpābhijñaḥ tapodhanāt
viditvā tena sā dattā tasya paitāmahaṃ kulam
18. rāma hi mayaḥ tapodhanāt śāpābhijñaḥ
viditvā tena sā tasya paitāmahaṃ kulam dattā
18. Indeed, O Rāma, Maya, being aware of the curse from the ascetic, gave her (Mandodarī) into his (Rāvaṇa's) ancestral family.
अमोघां तस्य शक्तिं च प्रददौ परमाद्भुताम् ।
परेण तपसा लब्धां जघ्निवांल् लक्ष्मणं यया ॥१९॥
19. amoghāṃ tasya śaktiṃ ca pradadau paramādbhutām ,
pareṇa tapasā labdhāṃ jaghnivāṃl lakṣmaṇaṃ yayā.
19. amoghāṃ tasya śaktiṃ ca pradadau paramādbhutām
pareṇa tapasā labdhāṃ jaghnivān lakṣmaṇaṃ yayā
19. ca tasya amoghām paramādbhutām śaktim pareṇa
tapasā labdhām pradadau yayā lakṣmaṇam jaghnivān
19. And he gave him an unfailing and supremely wonderful weapon (śakti), which had been obtained through great asceticism (tapas), and by which Lakṣmaṇa was struck down.
एवं स कृतदारो वै लङ्कायामीश्वरः प्रभुः ।
गत्वा तु नगरं भार्ये भ्रातृभ्यां समुदावहत् ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ sa kṛtadāro vai laṅkāyāmīśvaraḥ prabhuḥ ,
gatvā tu nagaraṃ bhārye bhrātṛbhyāṃ samudāvahat.
20. evam saḥ kṛtadāraḥ vai laṅkāyām īśvaraḥ prabhuḥ
gatvā tu nagaraṃ bhārye bhrātṛbhyām samudāvahat
20. evam saḥ vai laṅkāyām īśvaraḥ prabhuḥ kṛtadāraḥ
tu nagaram gatvā bhrātṛbhyām bhārye samudāvahat
20. Thus, he, the powerful lord of Laṅkā, having himself taken a wife, then went to the city and arranged marriages for his two brothers.
वैरोचनस्य दौहित्रीं वज्रज्वालेति नामतः ।
तां भार्यां कुम्भकर्णस्य रावणः समुदावहत् ॥२१॥
21. vairocanasya dauhitrīṃ vajrajvāleti nāmataḥ ,
tāṃ bhāryāṃ kumbhakarṇasya rāvaṇaḥ samudāvahat.
21. vairocanasya dauhitrīṃ vajrajvālā iti nāmataḥ
tām bhāryām kumbhakarṇasya rāvaṇaḥ samudāvahat
21. rāvaṇaḥ vairocanasya dauhitrīm vajrajvālā iti
nāmataḥ tām kumbhakarṇasya bhāryām samudāvahat
21. Rāvaṇa arranged the marriage of Vajrajvālā, the granddaughter of Virocana, to be Kumbhakarṇa's wife.
गन्धर्वराजस्य सुतां शैलूषस्य महात्मन ।
सरमा नाम धर्मज्ञो लेभे भार्यां विभीषणः ॥२२॥
22. gandharvarājasya sutāṃ śailūṣasya mahātmana ,
saramā nāma dharmajño lebhe bhāryāṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ.
22. gandharvarājasya sutām śailūṣasya mahātmanaḥ
saramā nāma dharmajñaḥ lebhe bhāryām vibhīṣaṇaḥ
22. vibhīṣaṇaḥ dharmajñaḥ mahātmanaḥ gandharvarājasya
śailūṣasya saramā nāma sutām bhāryām lebhe
22. The righteous Vibhīṣaṇa obtained as his wife Saramā, the daughter of the great-souled Gandharva king Shailūṣa.
तीरे तु सरसः सा वै संजज्ञे मानसस्य च ।
मानसं च सरस्तात ववृधे जलदागमे ॥२३॥
23. tīre tu sarasaḥ sā vai saṃjajñe mānasasya ca ,
mānasaṃ ca sarastāta vavṛdhe jaladāgame.
23. tīre tu sarasaḥ sā vai saṃjajñe mānasasya
ca mānasam ca saraḥ tāta vavṛdhe jaladāgame
23. tāta sā vai tīre tu mānasasya sarasaḥ saṃjajñe
ca jaladāgame mānasam saraḥ ca vavṛdhe
23. Indeed, she was born on the bank of that very lake Mānasa. And, dear one, the lake Mānasa expanded with the onset of the rainy season.
मात्रा तु तस्याः कन्यायाः स्नेहनाक्रन्दितं वचः ।
सरो मा वर्धतेत्युक्तं ततः सा सरमाभवत् ॥२४॥
24. mātrā tu tasyāḥ kanyāyāḥ snehanākranditaṃ vacaḥ ,
saro mā vardhatetyuktaṃ tataḥ sā saramābhavat.
24. mātrā tu tasyāḥ kanyāyāḥ snehena ākranditam vacaḥ
saraḥ mā vardhate iti uktam tataḥ sā saramā abhavat
24. tu mātrā tasyāḥ kanyāyāḥ snehena ākranditam vacaḥ
saraḥ mā vardhate iti uktam tataḥ sā saramā abhavat
24. But with affection, the mother of that daughter cried out these words: "Lake, do not grow!" From that, she became Saramā.
एवं ते कृतदारा वै रेमिरे तत्र राक्षसाः ।
स्वां स्वां भार्यामुपादाय गन्धर्वा इव नन्दने ॥२५॥
25. evaṃ te kṛtadārā vai remire tatra rākṣasāḥ ,
svāṃ svāṃ bhāryāmupādāya gandharvā iva nandane.
25. evam te kṛtadārāḥ vai remire tatra rākṣasāḥ svām
svām bhāryām upādāya gandharvāḥ iva nandane
25. evam te kṛtadārāḥ rākṣasāḥ svām svām bhāryām
upādāya vai tatra nandane gandharvāḥ iva remire
25. Thus, those Rākṣasas, having obtained their respective wives, indeed delighted there like Gandharvas in the Nandana grove.
ततो मन्दोदरी पुत्रं मेघनादमसूयत ।
स एष इन्द्रजिन्नाम युष्माभिरभिधीयते ॥२६॥
26. tato mandodarī putraṃ meghanādamasūyata ,
sa eṣa indrajinnāma yuṣmābhirabhidhīyate.
26. tataḥ mandodarī putram meghanādam asūyata
saḥ eṣaḥ indrajit nāma yuṣmābhiḥ abhidhīyate
26. Then Mandodari gave birth to her son, Meghanada. He is the one whom you call Indrajit.
जातमात्रेण हि पुरा तेन राक्षससूनुना ।
रुदता सुमहान्मुक्तो नादो जलधरोपमः ॥२७॥
27. jātamātreṇa hi purā tena rākṣasasūnunā ,
rudatā sumahānmukto nādo jaladharopamaḥ.
27. jātamātreṇa hi purā tena rākṣasasūnunā
rudatā sumahān muktaḥ nādaḥ jaladharopamaḥ
27. Indeed, in the past, immediately upon his birth, that son of a demon (rākṣasa) let out a tremendous, cloud-like roar while crying.
जडीकृतायां लङ्कायां तेन नादेन तस्य वै ।
पिता तस्याकरोन्नाम मेघनाद इति स्वयम् ॥२८॥
28. jaḍīkṛtāyāṃ laṅkāyāṃ tena nādena tasya vai ,
pitā tasyākaronnāma meghanāda iti svayam.
28. jaḍīkṛtāyām laṅkāyām tena nādena tasya vai
pitā tasya akarot nāma meghanāda iti svayam
28. Indeed, when Lanka was stunned by that roar of his, his father himself gave him the name "Meghanada."
सो ऽवर्धत तदा राम रावणान्तःपुरे शुभे ।
रक्ष्यमाणो वरस्त्रीभिश्छन्नः काष्ठैरिवानलः ॥२९॥
29. so'vardhata tadā rāma rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhe ,
rakṣyamāṇo varastrībhiśchannaḥ kāṣṭhairivānalaḥ.
29. saḥ avardhata tadā rāma rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhe
rakṣyamāṇaḥ varastrībhiḥ channaḥ kāṣṭhaiḥ iva analaḥ
29. O Rama, he then grew up in Ravana's beautiful inner palace, protected by the finest women, hidden like a fire (anala) covered by wood.
