वसिष्ठस्तु तदा राममुक्त्वा राजपुरोहितः ।
अब्रवीद्धर्मसंयुक्तं पुनरेवापरं वचः ॥१॥
1. vasiṣṭhastu tadā rāmamuktvā rājapurohitaḥ ,

1. Then, the royal priest Vashishta, after speaking to Rama, indeed uttered yet another statement endowed with (natural) law (dharma).
पुरुषस्येह जातस्य भवन्ति गुरवस्त्रयः ।
आचार्यश्चैव काकुत्स्थ पिता माता च राघव ॥२॥
2. puruṣasyeha jātasya bhavanti guravastrayaḥ ,
ācāryaścaiva kākutstha pitā mātā ca rāghava.

2. In this world, for a person (puruṣa) who is born, there are three revered teachers: the preceptor, O Kakutstha, and also the father and mother, O Raghava.
पिता ह्येनं जनयति पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ ।
प्रज्ञां ददाति चाचार्यस्तस्मात् स गुरुरुच्यते ॥३॥
3. pitā hyenaṃ janayati puruṣaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
prajñāṃ dadāti cācāryastasmāt sa gururucyate.

prajñām dadāti ca ācāryaḥ tasmāt saḥ guruḥ ucyate
3. puruṣarṣabha,

3. Indeed, the father begets this person (puruṣa), O best among men. And the preceptor imparts wisdom. Therefore, he (the preceptor) is called a revered teacher (guru).
स ते ऽहं पितुराचार्यस्तव चैव परंतप ।
मम त्वं वचनं कुर्वन्नातिवर्तेः सतां गतिम् ॥४॥
4. sa te'haṃ piturācāryastava caiva paraṃtapa ,
mama tvaṃ vacanaṃ kurvannātivarteḥ satāṃ gatim.

4. O tormentor of foes, I am that preceptor, both of your father and of you. By following my instruction, you should not deviate from the path of the virtuous.
इमा हि ते परिषदः श्रेणयश्च समागताः ।
एषु तात चरन्धर्मं नातिवर्तेः सतां गतिम् ॥५॥
5. imā hi te pariṣadaḥ śreṇayaśca samāgatāḥ ,
eṣu tāta carandharmaṃ nātivarteḥ satāṃ gatim.

5. Indeed, these assemblies and groups are gathered here before you. Among them, dear son, by adhering to your natural law (dharma), you must not abandon the path of the righteous.
वृद्धाया धर्मशीलाया मातुर्नार्हस्यवर्तितुम् ।
अस्यास्तु वचनं कुर्वन्नातिवर्तेः सतां गतिम् ॥६॥
6. vṛddhāyā dharmaśīlāyā māturnārhasyavartitum ,
asyāstu vacanaṃ kurvannātivarteḥ satāṃ gatim.
6. vṛddhāyāḥ dharmaśīlāyāḥ mātuḥ na arhasi avartitum
| asyāḥ tu vacanam kurvan na ativarteḥ satām gatim
6. tvam vṛddhāyāḥ dharmaśīlāyāḥ mātuḥ avartitum na arhasi
tu asyāḥ vacanam kurvan satām gatim na ativarteḥ
6. You ought not to disregard your aged, virtuous mother. By obeying her word, you will certainly not deviate from the path of the righteous.
भरतस्य वचः कुर्वन्याचमानस्य राघव ।
आत्मानं नातिवर्तेस्त्वं सत्यधर्मपराक्रम ॥७॥
7. bharatasya vacaḥ kurvanyācamānasya rāghava ,
ātmānaṃ nātivartestvaṃ satyadharmaparākrama.

7. O Rāghava, by acceding to the plea of Bharata, who is entreating you, you yourself, O mighty one whose valor is founded on truth and natural law (dharma), would not transgress your own being (ātman).
एवं मधुरमुक्तस्तु गुरुणा राघवः स्वयम् ।
प्रत्युवाच समासीनं वसिष्ठं पुरुषर्षभः ॥८॥
8. evaṃ madhuramuktastu guruṇā rāghavaḥ svayam ,
pratyuvāca samāsīnaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
8. evam madhuram uktaḥ tu guruṇā rāghavaḥ svayam
| pratyuvāca samāsīnam vasiṣṭham puruṣarṣabhaḥ
8. evam guruṇā madhuram uktaḥ tu rāghavaḥ svayam,

8. Thus, Rāghava himself, having been gently addressed by his preceptor (guru), that chief among men, replied to Vasiṣṭha, who was seated.
यन्मातापितरौ वृत्तं तनये कुरुतः सदा ।
न सुप्रतिकरं तत्तु मात्रा पित्रा च यत् कृतम् ॥९॥
9. yanmātāpitarau vṛttaṃ tanaye kurutaḥ sadā ,
na supratikaraṃ tattu mātrā pitrā ca yat kṛtam.
9. yat mātāpitarau vṛttam tanaye kurutaḥ sadā | na
supratikaram tat tu mātrā pitrā ca yat kṛtam
9. mātāpitarau sadā yat vṛttam tanaye kurutaḥ,

9. The care that a mother and father always render to their son, that which has been done by the mother and father, is indeed impossible to repay.
यथाशक्ति प्रदानेन स्नापनाच्छादनेन च ।
नित्यं च प्रियवादेन तथा संवर्धनेन च ॥१०॥
10. yathāśakti pradānena snāpanācchādanena ca ,
nityaṃ ca priyavādena tathā saṃvardhanena ca.
10. yathāśakti pradānena snāpana ācchādanena ca |
nityam ca priyavādena tathā saṃvardhanena ca
10. yathāśakti pradānena ca,
snāpana ācchādanena ca,

10. (The service includes actions such as) by giving according to their capacity, by bathing and clothing, and constantly by speaking kindly, and similarly by nurturing.
स हि राजा जनयिता पिता दशरथो मम ।
आज्ञातं यन्मया तस्य न तन्मिथ्या भविष्यति ॥११॥
11. sa hi rājā janayitā pitā daśaratho mama ,
ājñātaṃ yanmayā tasya na tanmithyā bhaviṣyati.
11. saḥ hi rājā janayitā pitā daśarathaḥ mama |
ājñātam yat mayā tasya na tat mithyā bhaviṣyati
11. saḥ hi rājā mama janayitā pitā daśarathaḥ,
yat tasya ājñātam mayā,
tat na mithyā bhaviṣyati
11. He is indeed my father, King Dasharatha, my progenitor. Whatever command of his I have acknowledged, that will not prove false.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण भरतः प्रत्यनन्तरम् ।
उवाच परमोदारः सूतं परमदुर्मनाः ॥१२॥
12. evamuktastu rāmeṇa bharataḥ pratyanantaram ,
uvāca paramodāraḥ sūtaṃ paramadurmanāḥ.
12. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa bharataḥ prati anantaram
| uvāca paramodāraḥ sūtam paramadurmanāḥ
12. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu paramodāraḥ paramadurmanāḥ

12. Thus addressed by Rama, Bharata, who was exceedingly noble yet deeply distressed, immediately spoke to the charioteer.
इह मे स्थण्डिले शीघ्रं कुशानास्तर सारथे ।
आर्यं प्रत्युपवेक्ष्यामि यावन्मे न प्रसीदति ॥१३॥
13. iha me sthaṇḍile śīghraṃ kuśānāstara sārathe ,
āryaṃ pratyupavekṣyāmi yāvanme na prasīdati.
13. iha me sthaṇḍile śīghram kuśān āstara sārathe
āryam pratyupavekṣyāmi yāvat me na prasīdati
13. sārathe iha me sthaṇḍile śīghram kuśān āstara yāvat
me na prasīdati [tāvat] āryam pratyupavekṣyāmi
13. O charioteer, quickly spread kusha grass here on this purified ground for me. I will sit in protest before the venerable one until he becomes gracious towards me.
अनाहारो निरालोको धनहीनो यथा द्विजः ।
शेष्ये पुरस्ताच्छालाया यावन्न प्रतियास्यति ॥१४॥
14. anāhāro nirāloko dhanahīno yathā dvijaḥ ,
śeṣye purastācchālāyā yāvanna pratiyāsyati.
14. anāhāraḥ nirālokaḥ dhanahīnaḥ yathā dvijaḥ
śeṣye purastāt śālāyāḥ yāvat na pratiyāsyati
14. yathā anāhāraḥ nirālokaḥ dhanahīnaḥ dvijaḥ,
[aham] śālāyāḥ purastāt śeṣye,
yāvat [saḥ] na pratiyāsyati
14. Like an ascetic (dvija) who is without food, without light, and without wealth, I will lie down in front of the hut until he (Rama) decides not to depart (for exile).
स तु राममवेक्षन्तं सुमन्त्रं प्रेक्ष्य दुर्मनाः ।
कुशोत्तरमुपस्थाप्य भूमावेवास्तरत् स्वयम् ॥१५॥
15. sa tu rāmamavekṣantaṃ sumantraṃ prekṣya durmanāḥ ,
kuśottaramupasthāpya bhūmāvevāstarat svayam.
15. saḥ tu rāmam avekṣantam sumantram prekṣya durmanāḥ
kuśottaram upasthāpya bhūmau eva āstarat svayam
15. saḥ tu durmanāḥ,
rāmam avekṣantam sumantram prekṣya,
kuśottaram upasthāpya,
bhūmau eva svayam āstarat
15. But Bharata, distressed in mind, upon seeing Sumantra who was gazing at Rama, himself arranged the kusha-grass covering and spread it on the ground.
तमुवाच महातेजा रामो राजर्षिसत्तमाः ।
किं मां भरत कुर्वाणं तात प्रत्युपवेक्ष्यसि ॥१६॥
16. tamuvāca mahātejā rāmo rājarṣisattamāḥ ,
kiṃ māṃ bharata kurvāṇaṃ tāta pratyupavekṣyasi.
16. tam uvāca mahātejāḥ rāmaḥ rājarṣisattamaḥ kim
mām bharata kurvāṇam tāta pratyupavekṣyasi
16. mahātejāḥ rāmaḥ rājarṣisattamaḥ tam uvāca (saḥ) [iti] 'bharata tāta,
kim mām kurvāṇam pratyupavekṣyasi?'
16. Then Rama, who was greatly radiant and the best of royal sages, said to him: 'O Bharata, dear one, why will you sit in protest against me, who am fulfilling my duty?'
ब्राह्मणो ह्येकपार्श्वेन नरान् रोद्धुमिहार्हति ।
न तु मूर्धावसिक्तानां विधिः प्रत्युपवेशने ॥१७॥
17. brāhmaṇo hyekapārśvena narān roddhumihārhati ,
na tu mūrdhāvasiktānāṃ vidhiḥ pratyupaveśane.
17. brāhmaṇaḥ hi ekapārśvena narān roddhum iha arhati
| na tu mūrdhāvasiktānām vidhiḥ pratyupaveśane
17. hi brāhmaṇaḥ iha ekapārśvena narān roddhum arhati
tu mūrdhāvasiktānām pratyupaveśane vidhiḥ na
17. Indeed, a Brahmin is capable of obstructing men here even by his mere presence on one side. However, there is no such prescribed rule for those whose heads have been consecrated (mūrdhāvasikta), like kings, concerning sitting down in return or sitting opposite them.
उत्तिष्ठ नरशार्दूल हित्वैतद्दारुणं व्रतम् ।
पुरवर्यामितः क्षिप्रमयोध्यां याहि राघव ॥१८॥
18. uttiṣṭha naraśārdūla hitvaitaddāruṇaṃ vratam ,
puravaryāmitaḥ kṣipramayodhyāṃ yāhi rāghava.
18. uttiṣṭha naraśārdūla hitvā etat dāruṇam vratam
| puravaryām itaḥ kṣipram ayodhyām yāhi rāghava
18. naraśārdūla rāghava,
etat dāruṇam vratam hitvā uttiṣṭha itaḥ kṣipram puravaryām ayodhyām yāhi
18. O tiger among men, O Raghava, arise! Abandon this terrible vow from here and swiftly go to Ayodhya, the best of cities.
आसीनस्त्वेव भरतः पौरजानपदं जनम् ।
उवाच सर्वतः प्रेक्ष्य किमार्यं नानुशासथ ॥१९॥
19. āsīnastveva bharataḥ paurajānapadaṃ janam ,
uvāca sarvataḥ prekṣya kimāryaṃ nānuśāsatha.
19. āsīnaḥ tu eva bharataḥ paurajānapadam janam |
uvāca sarvataḥ prekṣya kim āryam na anuśāsatha
19. bharataḥ āsīnaḥ tu eva sarvataḥ prekṣya
paurajānapadam janam uvāca kim āryam na anuśāsatha
19. Bharata, while sitting there, observing from all sides, spoke to the people from both the city and the country, asking, "Why do you not instruct (or advise) the venerable one (ārya)?"
ते तमूचुर्महात्मानं पौरजानपदा जनाः ।
काकुत्स्थमभिजानीमः सम्यग्वदति राघवः ॥२०॥
20. te tamūcurmahātmānaṃ paurajānapadā janāḥ ,
kākutsthamabhijānīmaḥ samyagvadati rāghavaḥ.
20. te tam ūcuḥ mahātmānam paurajānapadāḥ janāḥ |
kākutstham abhijānīmaḥ samyak vadati rāghavaḥ
20. te paurajānapadāḥ janāḥ mahātmānam tam ūcuḥ
rāghavaḥ samyak vadati kākutstham abhijānīmaḥ
20. Those people, the citizens and country dwellers, said to that great-souled one (mahātman, referring to Bharata): "We acknowledge Kakutstha (Rama); Raghava (Rama) speaks rightly."
एषो ऽपि हि महाभागः पितुर्वचसि तिष्ठति ।
अत एव न शक्ताः स्मो व्यावर्तयितुमञ्जसा ॥२१॥
21. eṣo'pi hi mahābhāgaḥ piturvacasi tiṣṭhati ,
ata eva na śaktāḥ smo vyāvartayitumañjasā.
21. eṣaḥ api hi mahābhāgaḥ pituḥ vacasi tiṣṭhati
ata eva na śaktāḥ smaḥ vyāvartayitum añjasā
21. eṣaḥ mahābhāgaḥ api hi pituḥ vacasi tiṣṭhati
ata eva na śaktāḥ smaḥ añjasā vyāvartayitum
21. Indeed, this noble person also adheres to his father's word. Therefore, we are certainly not able to dissuade him easily.
तेषामाज्ञाय वचनं रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
एवं निबोध वचनं सुहृदां धर्मचक्षुषाम् ॥२२॥
22. teṣāmājñāya vacanaṃ rāmo vacanamabravīt ,
evaṃ nibodha vacanaṃ suhṛdāṃ dharmacakṣuṣām.
22. teṣām ājñāya vacanam rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
evam nibodha vacanam suhṛdām dharmacakṣuṣām
22. teṣām vacanam ājñāya rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
evam dharmacakṣuṣām suhṛdām vacanam nibodha
22. Having understood their statement, Rama spoke. 'Thus, comprehend this message from friends who possess the eye of righteousness (dharma).'
एतच्चैवोभयं श्रुत्वा सम्यक् संपश्य राघव ।
उत्तिष्ठ त्वं महाबाहो मां च स्पृश तथोदकम् ॥२३॥
23. etaccaivobhayaṃ śrutvā samyak saṃpaśya rāghava ,
uttiṣṭha tvaṃ mahābāho māṃ ca spṛśa tathodakam.
23. etat ca eva ubhayam śrutvā samyak saṃpaśya rāghava
uttiṣṭha tvam mahābāho mām ca spṛśa tathā udakam
23. rāghava etat ubhayam ca eva śrutvā samyak saṃpaśya
mahābāho tvam uttiṣṭha mām ca tathā udakam spṛśa
23. Having correctly heard both of these (statements), O scion of Raghu, properly consider (them). Arise, O mighty-armed one, and touch me, and also water.
अथोत्थाय जलं स्पृष्ट्वा भरतो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
शृण्वन्तु मे परिषदो मन्त्रिणः श्रेणयस्तथा ॥२४॥
24. athotthāya jalaṃ spṛṣṭvā bharato vākyamabravīt ,
śṛṇvantu me pariṣado mantriṇaḥ śreṇayastathā.
24. atha utthāya jalam spṛṣṭvā bharataḥ vākyam abravīt
śṛṇvantu me pariṣadaḥ mantriṇaḥ śreṇayaḥ tathā
24. atha utthāya jalam spṛṣṭvā bharataḥ vākyam abravīt
me pariṣadaḥ mantriṇaḥ tathā śreṇayaḥ śṛṇvantu
24. Then, having arisen and touched water, Bharata spoke these words: 'Let the assemblies, the ministers, and the guilds listen to me.'
न याचे पितरं राज्यं नानुशासामि मातरम् ।
आर्यं परमधर्मज्ञमभिजानामि राघवम् ॥२५॥
25. na yāce pitaraṃ rājyaṃ nānuśāsāmi mātaram ,
āryaṃ paramadharmajñamabhijānāmi rāghavam.
25. na yāce pitaram rājyam na anuśāsāmi mātaram
āryam paramadharmajñam abhijānāmi rāghavam
25. na aham pitaram rājyam yāce na mātaram anuśāsāmi
rāghavam āryam paramadharmajñam abhijānāmi
25. I do not beg my father for the kingdom, nor do I instruct my mother. I recognize Raghava (Rama) to be noble and supremely knowledgeable in natural law (dharma).
यदि त्ववश्यं वस्तव्यं कर्तव्यं च पितुर्वचः ।
अहमेव निवत्स्यामि चतुर्दश वने समाः ॥२६॥
26. yadi tvavaśyaṃ vastavyaṃ kartavyaṃ ca piturvacaḥ ,
ahameva nivatsyāmi caturdaśa vane samāḥ.
26. yadi tu avaśyam vastavyam kartavyam ca pituḥ
vacaḥ aham eva nivatsyāmi caturdaśa vane samāḥ
26. yadi tu avaśyam vastavyam ca pituḥ vacaḥ
kartavyam aham eva caturdaśa samāḥ vane nivatsyāmi
26. If indeed it is essential to reside (in the forest) and the father's command must be fulfilled, then I myself will live in the forest for fourteen years.
धर्मात्मा तस्य तथ्येन भ्रातुर्वाक्येन विस्मितः ।
उवाच रामः संप्रेक्ष्य पौरजानपदं जनम् ॥२७॥
27. dharmātmā tasya tathyena bhrāturvākyena vismitaḥ ,
uvāca rāmaḥ saṃprekṣya paurajānapadaṃ janam.
27. dharmātmā tasya tathyena bhrātuḥ vākyena vismitaḥ
uvāca rāmaḥ samprekṣya paurajānapadam janam
27. dharmātmā rāmaḥ tasya bhrātuḥ tathyena vākyena
vismitaḥ paurajānapadam janam samprekṣya uvāca
27. Rama, a man of righteous nature (dharmātman), astonished by the truthful words of his brother, spoke after carefully observing the citizens and country people.
विक्रीतमाहितं क्रीतं यत् पित्रा जीवता मम ।
न तल् लोपयितुं शक्यं मया वा भरतेन वा ॥२८॥
28. vikrītamāhitaṃ krītaṃ yat pitrā jīvatā mama ,
na tal lopayituṃ śakyaṃ mayā vā bharatena vā.
28. vikrītam āhitam krītam yat pitrā jīvatā mama
na tat lopayitum śakyam mayā vā bharatena vā
28. yat mama jīvatā pitrā vikrītam āhitam krītam
tat mayā vā bharatena vā lopayitum na śakyam
28. Whatever was sold, mortgaged, or bought by my father while he was alive, that cannot be nullified by me or by Bharata.
उपधिर्न मया कार्यो वनवासे जुगुप्सितः ।
युक्तमुक्तं च कैकेय्या पित्रा मे सुकृतं कृतम् ॥२९॥
29. upadhirna mayā kāryo vanavāse jugupsitaḥ ,
yuktamuktaṃ ca kaikeyyā pitrā me sukṛtaṃ kṛtam.
29. upadhiḥ na mayā kāryaḥ vanavāse jugupsitaḥ
yuktam uktam ca kaikeyyā pitrā me sukṛtam kṛtam
29. mayā vanavāse jugupsitaḥ upadhiḥ na kāryaḥ
kaikeyyā yuktam uktam ca me pitrā sukṛtam kṛtam
29. I must not engage in any censurable deceit during my forest dwelling. What was stated by Kaikeyī was appropriate, and my father thereby performed a good deed.
जानामि भरतं क्षान्तं गुरुसत्कारकारिणम् ।
सर्वमेवात्र कल्याणं सत्यसंधे महात्मनि ॥३०॥
30. jānāmi bharataṃ kṣāntaṃ gurusatkārakāriṇam ,
sarvamevātra kalyāṇaṃ satyasaṃdhe mahātmani.
30. jānāmi bharatam kṣāntam guru-satkāra-kāriṇam
sarvam eva atra kalyāṇam satya-sandhe mahātmani
30. aham bharatam kṣāntam guru-satkāra-kāriṇam jānāmi
atra satya-sandhe mahātmani sarvam kalyāṇam eva
30. I know Bharata to be patient and respectful of his elders (guru). Indeed, all that is auspicious resides in that great-souled (mahā-ātman) one who is firm in truth.
अनेन धर्मशीलेन वनात् प्रत्यागतः पुनः ।
भ्रात्रा सह भविष्यामि पृथिव्याः पतिरुत्तमः ॥३१॥
31. anena dharmaśīlena vanāt pratyāgataḥ punaḥ ,
bhrātrā saha bhaviṣyāmi pṛthivyāḥ patiruttamaḥ.
31. anena dharma-śīlena vanāt pratyāgataḥ punaḥ
bhrātrā saha bhaviṣyāmi pṛthivyāḥ patiḥ uttamaḥ
31. aham vanāt punaḥ pratyāgataḥ anena dharma-śīlena

31. Having returned from the forest, I shall, with this virtuous (dharma-śīla) brother, again become the supreme lord of the earth.
वृतो राजा हि कैकेय्या मया तद्वचनं कृतम् ।
अनृतान्मोचयानेन पितरं तं महीपतिम् ॥३२॥
32. vṛto rājā hi kaikeyyā mayā tadvacanaṃ kṛtam ,
anṛtānmocayānena pitaraṃ taṃ mahīpatim.
32. vṛtaḥ rājā hi kaikeyyā mayā tat-vacanam kṛtam
anṛtāt mocayā anena pitaram tam mahī-patim
32. hi kaikeyyā rājā vṛtaḥ mayā tat-vacanam kṛtam
anena tam pitaram mahī-patim anṛtāt mocayā
32. Indeed, the king was bound by Kaikeyī, and that promise (her word) has been fulfilled by me. By this action, I shall deliver that king, my father, the lord of the earth (mahī-pati), from falsehood.
