अथ जित्वा मरुत्तं स प्रययौ राक्षसाधिपः ।
नगराणि नरेन्द्राणां युद्धकाङ्क्षी दशाननः ॥१॥
1. atha jitvā maruttaṃ sa prayayau rākṣasādhipaḥ ,

1. Then, having defeated Marutta, that lord of Rākṣasas, Daśānana, desirous of battle, proceeded towards the cities of kings.
स समासाद्य राजेन्द्रान्महेन्द्रवरुणोपमान् ।
अब्रवीद् राक्षसेन्द्रस्तु युद्धं मे दीयतामिति ॥२॥
2. sa samāsādya rājendrānmahendravaruṇopamān ,
abravīd rākṣasendrastu yuddhaṃ me dīyatāmiti.
2. saḥ samāsādya rājendrān mahendravaruṇopamān |
abravīt rākṣasendraḥ tu yuddham me dīyatām iti

2. Having approached kings who were comparable to Mahendra and Varuṇa, that chief of Rākṣasas then said, "Let battle be granted to me!"
निर्जिताः स्मेति वा ब्रूत एषो हि मम निश्चयः ।
अन्यथा कुर्वतामेवं मोक्षो वो नोपपद्यते ॥३॥
3. nirjitāḥ smeti vā brūta eṣo hi mama niścayaḥ ,
anyathā kurvatāmevaṃ mokṣo vo nopapadyate.
3. nirjitāḥ sma iti vā brūta eṣaḥ hi mama niścayaḥ
anyathā kurvatām evam mokṣaḥ vaḥ na upapadyate
3. Or say, 'We are conquered.' This is indeed my decision. Otherwise, for those who act differently in this manner, liberation (mokṣa) will not be possible for you.
ततस्तु बहवः प्राज्ञाः पार्थिवा धर्मणिश्चयाः ।
निर्जिताः स्मेत्यभाषन्त ज्ञात्वा वरबलं रिपोः ॥४॥
4. tatastu bahavaḥ prājñāḥ pārthivā dharmaṇiścayāḥ ,
nirjitāḥ smetyabhāṣanta jñātvā varabalaṃ ripoḥ.
4. tataḥ tu bahavaḥ prājñāḥ pārthivāḥ dharma-niścayāḥ
nirjitāḥ sma iti abhāṣanta jñātvā vara-balam ripoḥ
4. Then, many wise kings, firm in their adherence to natural law (dharma), declared, "We are conquered," knowing the superior strength of the enemy.
दुष्यन्तः सुरथो गाधिर्गयो राजा पुरूरवाः ।
एते सर्वे ऽब्रुवंस्तात निर्जिताः स्मेति पार्थिवाः ॥५॥
5. duṣyantaḥ suratho gādhirgayo rājā purūravāḥ ,
ete sarve'bruvaṃstāta nirjitāḥ smeti pārthivāḥ.
5. duṣyantaḥ surathaḥ gādhiḥ gayaḥ rājā purūravāḥ
ete sarve abruvan tāta nirjitāḥ sma iti pārthivāḥ
5. Dushyanta, Suratha, Gadhi, Gaya, King Pururavas – these kings, all of them, O dear one, declared, "We are conquered."
अथायोध्यां समासाद्य रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
सुगुप्तामनरण्येन शक्रेणेवामरावतीम् ॥६॥
6. athāyodhyāṃ samāsādya rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
suguptāmanaraṇyena śakreṇevāmarāvatīm.
6. atha ayodhyām samāsādya rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasa-adhipaḥ
su-guptām anaraṇyena śakreṇa iva amarāvatīm
6. Then, having reached Ayodhya, Ravana, the king of the Rākṣasas, found it well-protected by Anaranya, just like Amaravati is protected by Śakra (Indra).
प्राह राजानमासाद्य युद्धं मे संप्रदीयताम् ।
निर्जितो ऽस्मीति वा ब्रूहि ममैतदिह शासनम् ॥७॥
7. prāha rājānamāsādya yuddhaṃ me saṃpradīyatām ,
nirjito'smīti vā brūhi mamaitadiha śāsanam.
7. prāha rājānam āsādya yuddham me saṃpradīyatām
nirjitaḥ asmi iti vā brūhi mama etat iha śāsanam
7. rājānam āsādya prāha me yuddham saṃpradīyatām vā

7. Having approached the king, he said, 'Grant me battle, or else declare, "I am defeated." This is my command here.'
अनरण्यः सुसंक्रुद्धो राक्षसेन्द्रमथाब्रवीत् ।
दीयते द्वन्द्वयुद्धं ते राक्षसाधिपते मया ॥८॥
8. anaraṇyaḥ susaṃkruddho rākṣasendramathābravīt ,
dīyate dvandvayuddhaṃ te rākṣasādhipate mayā.
8. anaraṇyaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ rākṣasendram atha abravīt
dīyate dvandvayuddham te rākṣasādhipate mayā
8. atha susaṃkruddhaḥ anaraṇyaḥ rākṣasendram abravīt
rākṣasādhipate te dvandvayuddham mayā dīyate
8. Then, the greatly enraged Anaranya spoke to the lord of "rākṣasa"s, 'A duel is offered to you by me, O lord of "rākṣasa"s.'
अथ पूर्वं श्रुतार्थेन सज्जितं सुमहद्धि यत् ।
निष्क्रामत्तन्नरेन्द्रस्य बलं रक्षोवधोद्यतम् ॥९॥
9. atha pūrvaṃ śrutārthena sajjitaṃ sumahaddhi yat ,
niṣkrāmattannarendrasya balaṃ rakṣovadhodyatam.
9. atha pūrvam śrutārthena sajjitam sumahat hi yat
niṣkrāmat tat narendrasya balam rakṣovadhodyatam
9. atha yat pūrvam śrutārthena sajjitam hi sumahat
rakṣovadhodyatam tat narendrasya balam niṣkrāmat
9. Then, the king's very great army, which had been prepared in anticipation of the previously heard intention, and was ready for the destruction of the "rākṣasa"s, marched forth.
नागानां बहुसाहस्रं वाजिनामयुतं तथा ।
महीं संछाद्य निष्क्रान्तं सपदातिरथं क्षणात् ॥१०॥
10. nāgānāṃ bahusāhasraṃ vājināmayutaṃ tathā ,
mahīṃ saṃchādya niṣkrāntaṃ sapadātirathaṃ kṣaṇāt.
10. nāgānām bahusāhasram vājinām ayutam tathā mahīm
saṃchādya niṣkrāntam sapadātiratham kṣaṇāt
10. tathā nāgānām bahusāhasram vājinām ayutam
sapadātiratham mahīm saṃchādya kṣaṇāt niṣkrāntam
10. Many thousands of elephants and ten thousand horses, along with infantry and chariots, emerged in an instant, covering the earth.
तद् रावणबलं प्राप्य बलं तस्य महीपतेः ।
प्राणश्यत तदा राजन् हव्यं हुतमिवानले ॥११॥
11. tad rāvaṇabalaṃ prāpya balaṃ tasya mahīpateḥ ,
prāṇaśyata tadā rājan havyaṃ hutamivānale.
11. tad rāvaṇabalaṃ prāpya balam tasya mahīpateḥ
prāṇaśyat tadā rājan havyaṃ hutam iva anale
11. rājan,
tad rāvaṇabalaṃ tasya mahīpateḥ balam prāpya tadā anale hutam havyaṃ iva prāṇaśyat
11. O King, when Rāvaṇa's army encountered the force of that king, it was then destroyed just like an oblation offered into a fire.
सो ऽपश्यत नरेन्द्रस्तु नश्यमानं महद्बलम् ।
महार्णवं समासाद्य यथा पञ्चापगा जलम् ॥१२॥
12. so'paśyata narendrastu naśyamānaṃ mahadbalam ,
mahārṇavaṃ samāsādya yathā pañcāpagā jalam.
12. saḥ apaśyat narendraḥ tu naśyamānaṃ mahat balam
mahārṇavaṃ samāsādya yathā pañcāpagāḥ jalam
12. tu saḥ narendraḥ naśyamānaṃ mahat balam apaśyat,
yathā pañcāpagāḥ jalam mahārṇavaṃ samāsādya
12. But that king (narendra) saw the mighty army perishing, just as the waters of the five rivers merge into the great ocean.
ततः शक्रधनुःप्रख्यं धनुर्विस्फारयन् स्वयम् ।
आसदाद नरेन्द्रास्तं रावणं क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ śakradhanuḥprakhyaṃ dhanurvisphārayan svayam ,
āsadāda narendrāstaṃ rāvaṇaṃ krodhamūrchitaḥ.
13. tataḥ śakradhanuḥprakhyaṃ dhanuḥ visphārayan svayam
āsadāda narendraḥ tam rāvaṇaṃ krodhamūrcitaḥ
13. tataḥ krodhamūrcitaḥ narendraḥ svayam śakradhanuḥprakhyaṃ
dhanuḥ visphārayan tam rāvaṇaṃ āsadāda
13. Then, maddened by rage, that king (narendra) himself strung his bow, which resembled Indra's bow, and approached Rāvaṇa.
ततो बाणशतान्यष्टौ पातयामास मूर्धनि ।
तस्य राक्षसराजस्य इक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनः ॥१४॥
14. tato bāṇaśatānyaṣṭau pātayāmāsa mūrdhani ,
tasya rākṣasarājasya ikṣvākukulanandanaḥ.
14. tataḥ bāṇaśatāni aṣṭau pātayāmāsa mūrdhani
tasya rākṣasarājasya ikṣvākukulanandanaḥ
14. tataḥ ikṣvākukulanandanaḥ tasya rākṣasarājasya
mūrdhani aṣṭau bāṇaśatāni pātayāmāsa
14. Then, the joy of the Ikṣvāku dynasty (ikṣvākukulanandana) showered eight hundred arrows upon the head of that king of rākṣasas.
तस्य बाणाः पतन्तस्ते चक्रिरे न क्षतं क्व चित् ।
वारिधारा इवाभ्रेभ्यः पतन्त्यो नगमूर्धनि ॥१५॥
15. tasya bāṇāḥ patantaste cakrire na kṣataṃ kva cit ,
vāridhārā ivābhrebhyaḥ patantyo nagamūrdhani.
15. tasya bāṇāḥ patantaḥ te cakrire na kṣatam kva cit
vāridhārāḥ iva abhrebhyaḥ patantyaḥ nagamūrdhani
15. tasya patantaḥ te bāṇāḥ kvacit kṣatam na cakrire
abhrebhyaḥ nagamūrdhani patantyaḥ vāridhārāḥ iva
15. His arrows, falling upon him, did not inflict any wound anywhere, just like streams of rain falling from clouds onto a mountain peak.
ततो राक्षसराजेन क्रुद्धेन नृपतिस्तदा ।
तलेन भिहतो मूर्ध्नि स रथान्निपपात ह ॥१६॥
16. tato rākṣasarājena kruddhena nṛpatistadā ,
talena bhihato mūrdhni sa rathānnipapāta ha.
16. tataḥ rākṣasarājena kruddhena nṛpatiḥ tadā
talena abhihataḥ mūrdhni saḥ rathāt nipapāta ha
16. tataḥ kruddhena rākṣasarājena tadā nṛpatiḥ
mūrdhni talena abhihataḥ saḥ rathāt nipapāta ha
16. Then, the enraged king of the rākṣasas struck that king on the head with his palm, and he indeed fell from his chariot.
स राजा पतितो भूमौ विह्वलाङ्गः प्रवेपितः ।
वज्रदग्ध इवारण्ये सालो निपतितो महान् ॥१७॥
17. sa rājā patito bhūmau vihvalāṅgaḥ pravepitaḥ ,
vajradagdha ivāraṇye sālo nipatito mahān.
17. saḥ rājā patitaḥ bhūmau vihvalāṅgaḥ pravepitaḥ
vajradagdhaḥ iva araṇye sālaḥ nipatitaḥ mahān
17. saḥ rājā bhūmau patitaḥ vihvalāṅgaḥ pravepitaḥ
araṇye vajradagdhaḥ mahān sālaḥ iva nipatitaḥ
17. That king, having fallen to the ground, with agitated and trembling limbs, lay like a great sal tree that has been burnt and felled by a thunderbolt in a forest.
तं प्रहस्याब्रवीद् रक्ष इक्ष्वाकुं पृथिवीपतिम् ।
किमिदानीं त्वया प्राप्तं फलं मां प्रति युध्यता ॥१८॥
18. taṃ prahasyābravīd rakṣa ikṣvākuṃ pṛthivīpatim ,
kimidānīṃ tvayā prāptaṃ phalaṃ māṃ prati yudhyatā.
18. tam prahasya abravīt rakṣaḥ ikṣvākum pṛthivīpatim
kim idānīm tvayā prāptam phalam mām prati yudhyatā
18. rakṣaḥ tam ikṣvākum pṛthivīpatim prahasya abravīt
tvayā mām prati yudhyatā idānīm kim phalam prāptam
18. Laughing loudly, the rākṣasa said to that Ikṣvāku king, the lord of the earth, 'What result have you now obtained by fighting against me?'
त्रैलोक्ये नास्ति यो द्वन्द्वं मम दद्यान्नराधिप ।
शङ्के प्रमत्तो भोगेषु न शृणोषि बलं मम ॥१९॥
19. trailokye nāsti yo dvandvaṃ mama dadyānnarādhipa ,
śaṅke pramatto bhogeṣu na śṛṇoṣi balaṃ mama.
19. trailokye na asti yaḥ dvandvam mama dadyāt narādhipa
śaṅke pramattaḥ bhogeṣu na śṛṇoṣi balam mama
19. narādhipa trailokye yaḥ mama dvandvam dadyāt na asti.
śaṅke pramattaḥ bhogeṣu na śṛṇoṣi mama balam.
19. O King, there is no one in the three worlds who can offer me a challenge. I suspect you are distracted by pleasures and thus do not hear of my power.
तस्यैवं ब्रुवतो राजा मन्दासुर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
किं शक्यमिह कर्तुं वै यत् कालो दुरतिक्रमः ॥२०॥
20. tasyaivaṃ bruvato rājā mandāsurvākyamabravīt ,
kiṃ śakyamiha kartuṃ vai yat kālo duratikramaḥ.
20. tasya evam bruvataḥ rājā manda-asuḥ vākyam abravīt
kim śakyam iha kartum vai yat kālaḥ duratikramaḥ
20. tasya evam bruvataḥ manda-asuḥ rājā vākyam abravīt.
kim vai śakyam iha kartum? yat kālaḥ duratikramaḥ.
20. As he spoke thus, the king, his life force waning, replied: 'What indeed can be done here, for time (kāla) is difficult to overcome?'
न ह्यहं निर्जितो रक्षस्त्वया चात्मप्रशंसिना ।
कालेनेह विपन्नो ऽहं हेतुभूतस्तु मे भवान् ॥२१॥
21. na hyahaṃ nirjito rakṣastvayā cātmapraśaṃsinā ,
kāleneha vipanno'haṃ hetubhūtastu me bhavān.
21. na hi aham nirjitaḥ rakṣas tvayā ca ātmapraśaṃsinā
kālena iha vipannaḥ aham hetubhūtaḥ tu me bhavān
21. rakṣas hi aham tvayā ca ātmapraśaṃsinā na nirjitaḥ.
aham iha kālena vipannaḥ.
tu bhavān me hetubhūtaḥ.
21. Certainly, O demon, I was not conquered by you, the self-praising one. I have been ruined here by time (kāla), but you have merely become the instrument for my downfall.
किं त्विदानीं मया शक्यं कर्तुं प्राणपरिक्षये ।
इक्ष्वाकुपरिभावित्वाद्वचो वक्ष्यामि राक्षस ॥२२॥
22. kiṃ tvidānīṃ mayā śakyaṃ kartuṃ prāṇaparikṣaye ,
ikṣvākuparibhāvitvādvaco vakṣyāmi rākṣasa.
22. kim tu idānīm mayā śakyam kartum prāṇaparikṣaye
ikṣvākuparibhāvitvāt vacaḥ vakṣyāmi rākṣasa
22. tu idānīm prāṇaparikṣaye mayā kim śakyam kartum? rākṣasa ikṣvākuparibhāvitvāt vacaḥ vakṣyāmi.
22. But what can be done by me now, with my life force nearing its end? Because of the insult from an Ikṣvāku (king), O demon, I shall speak my word.
यदि दत्तं यदि हुतं यदि मे सुकृतं तपः ।
यदि गुप्ताः प्रजाः सम्यक् तथा सत्यं वचो ऽस्तु मे ॥२३॥
23. yadi dattaṃ yadi hutaṃ yadi me sukṛtaṃ tapaḥ ,
yadi guptāḥ prajāḥ samyak tathā satyaṃ vaco'stu me.
23. yadi dattaṃ yadi hutaṃ yadi me sukṛtaṃ tapaḥ | yadi
guptāḥ prajāḥ samyak tathā satyaṃ vacaḥ astu me
23. yadi dattaṃ yadi hutaṃ yadi me sukṛtaṃ tapaḥ yadi
prajāḥ samyak guptāḥ tathā me vacaḥ satyaṃ astu
23. If charity has been given, if offerings have been made in Vedic fire rituals (homa), if I have performed virtuous deeds and austerity (tapas), and if the subjects have been properly protected, then let my word be true.
उत्पत्स्यते कुले ह्यस्मिन्निक्ष्वाकूणां महात्मनाम् ।
राजा परमतेजस्वी यस्ते प्राणान् हरिष्यति ॥२४॥
24. utpatsyate kule hyasminnikṣvākūṇāṃ mahātmanām ,
rājā paramatejasvī yaste prāṇān hariṣyati.
24. utpatsyate kule hi asmin ikṣvākuṇām mahātmanām
| rājā paramatejasvī yaḥ te prāṇān hariṣyati
24. hi asmin kule mahātmanām ikṣvākuṇām rājā
paramatejasvī utpatsyate yaḥ te prāṇān hariṣyati
24. Indeed, in this very family of the great-souled Ikshvakus, a supremely powerful king will be born who will take your lives.
ततो जलधरोदग्रस्ताडितो देवदुन्दुभिः ।
तस्मिन्नुदाहृते शापे पुष्पवृष्टिश्च खाच्च्युता ॥२५॥
25. tato jaladharodagrastāḍito devadundubhiḥ ,
tasminnudāhṛte śāpe puṣpavṛṣṭiśca khāccyutā.
25. tataḥ jaladharodagrastāḍitaḥ devadundubhiḥ |
tasmin udāhṛte śāpe puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ ca khāt cyutā
25. tataḥ tasmin śāpe udāhṛte jaladharodagrastāḍitaḥ
devadundubhiḥ (abhūvat) ca khāt puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ cyutā
25. Then, as that curse was uttered, the celestial drum sounded, struck powerfully by clouds, and a shower of flowers fell from the sky.
ततः स राजा राजेन्द्र गतः स्थानं त्रिविष्टपम् ।
स्वर्गते च नृपे राम राक्षसः स न्यवर्तत ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ sa rājā rājendra gataḥ sthānaṃ triviṣṭapam ,
svargate ca nṛpe rāma rākṣasaḥ sa nyavartata.
26. tataḥ sa rājā rājendra gataḥ sthānaṃ triviṣṭapam
| svargate ca nṛpe rāma rākṣasaḥ sa nyavartata
26. tataḥ rājendra saḥ rājā triviṣṭapam sthānaṃ gataḥ
ca rāma nṛpe svargate saḥ rākṣasaḥ nyavartata
26. Then, O king of kings, that king went to the celestial abode. And when that king had departed to heaven, O Rāma, that demon returned.
