स प्रविश्य पुरीं लङ्कां रामबाणभयार्दितः ।
भग्नदर्पस्तदा राजा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः ॥१॥

1. Having entered the city of Laṅkā, tormented by the fear of Rāma's arrows, that king then became one with shattered pride and distraught senses.
मातंग इव सिंहेन गरुडेनेव पन्नगः ।
अभिभूतो ऽभवद् राजा राघवेण महात्मना ॥२॥
2. mātaṃga iva siṃhena garuḍeneva pannagaḥ ,
abhibhūto'bhavad rājā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā.
2. mātaṅgaḥ iva siṃhena garuḍena iva pannagaḥ
abhibhūtaḥ abhavat rājā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā

2. Just as an elephant is overcome by a lion, or a serpent by Garuḍa, so too was the king overpowered by the magnanimous Rāghava.
ब्रह्मदण्डप्रकाशानां विद्युत्सदृशवर्चसाम् ।
स्मरन् राघवबाणानां विव्यथे राक्षसेश्वरः ॥३॥
3. brahmadaṇḍaprakāśānāṃ vidyutsadṛśavarcasām ,
smaran rāghavabāṇānāṃ vivyathe rākṣaseśvaraḥ.

3. Remembering the arrows of Rama, which shone like the staff of Brahma and possessed a splendor resembling lightning, the lord of demons became greatly distressed.
स काञ्चनमयं दिव्यमाश्रित्य परमासनम् ।
विक्प्रेक्षमाणो रक्षांसि रावणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. sa kāñcanamayaṃ divyamāśritya paramāsanam ,
vikprekṣamāṇo rakṣāṃsi rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt.

4. Having taken his seat upon an excellent, divine, golden throne, Ravana, observing the demons, spoke these words.
सर्वं तत् खलु मे मोघं यत्तप्तं परमं तपः ।
यत् समानो महेन्द्रेण मानुषेणास्मि निर्जितः ॥५॥
5. sarvaṃ tat khalu me moghaṃ yattaptaṃ paramaṃ tapaḥ ,
yat samāno mahendreṇa mānuṣeṇāsmi nirjitaḥ.
5. sarvam tat khalu me mogham yat taptam paramam
tapaḥ yat samānaḥ mahendreṇa mānuṣeṇa asmi nirjitaḥ
5. khalu me tat sarvam paramam tapaḥ mogham yat taptam

5. Indeed, all that supreme austerity (tapas) which I performed has become futile, because I, who was comparable to Mahendra, have been defeated by a human.
इदं तद्ब्रह्मणो घोरं वाक्यं मामभ्युपस्थितम् ।
मानुषेभ्यो विजानीहि भयं त्वमिति तत्तथा ॥६॥
6. idaṃ tadbrahmaṇo ghoraṃ vākyaṃ māmabhyupasthitam ,
mānuṣebhyo vijānīhi bhayaṃ tvamiti tattathā.
6. idam tat brahmaṇaḥ ghoram vākyam mām abhyupasthitam
mānuṣebhyaḥ vijānīhi bhayam tvam iti tat tathā
6. idam tat brahmaṇaḥ ghoram vākyam mām abhyupasthitam
iti tvam mānuṣebhyaḥ bhayam vijānīhi tat tathā
6. This terrible pronouncement of Brahma, 'Know that fear (bhaya) will come to you from humans,' has indeed befallen me. And so it is truly happening.
देवदानवगन्धर्वैर्यक्षराक्षसपन्नगैः ।
अवध्यत्वं मया प्राप्तं मानुषेभ्यो न याचितम् ॥७॥
7. devadānavagandharvairyakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ ,
avadhyatvaṃ mayā prāptaṃ mānuṣebhyo na yācitam.
7. devadānavagandharvayakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ
avadhyatvam mayā prāptam mānuṣebhyaḥ na yācitam
7. Invincibility from gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, and nagas was obtained by me; it was not requested from humans.
एतदेवाभ्युपागम्य यत्नं कर्तुमिहार्हथ ।
राक्षसाश्चापि तिष्ठन्तु चर्यागोपुरमूर्धसु ॥८॥
8. etadevābhyupāgamya yatnaṃ kartumihārhatha ,
rākṣasāścāpi tiṣṭhantu caryāgopuramūrdhasu.
8. etad eva abhyupāgamya yatnam kartum iha arhatha
rākṣasāḥ ca api tiṣṭhantu caryāgopuramūrdhasu
8. Having resorted to this very strategy, you should make efforts here. And let the rakshasas also remain on the tops of the main city gates.
स चाप्रतिमगम्भीरो देवदानवदर्पहा ।
ब्रह्मशापाभिभूतस्तु कुम्भकर्णो विबोध्यताम् ॥९॥
9. sa cāpratimagambhīro devadānavadarpahā ,
brahmaśāpābhibhūtastu kumbhakarṇo vibodhyatām.
9. saḥ ca apratimagambhīraḥ devadānavadarpahā
brahmaśāpābhibhūtaḥ tu kumbhakarṇaḥ vibodhyatām
9. And let Kumbhakarna be awakened, he who is of unequalled profundity, the destroyer of the pride of gods and demons, but who is (now) overcome by a brahmin's curse.
स पराजितमात्मानं प्रहस्तं च निषूदितम् ।
ज्ञात्वा रक्षोबलं भीममादिदेश महाबलः ॥१०॥
10. sa parājitamātmānaṃ prahastaṃ ca niṣūditam ,
jñātvā rakṣobalaṃ bhīmamādideśa mahābalaḥ.
10. saḥ parājitam ātmānam prahastam ca niṣūditam
jñātvā rakṣobalam bhīmam ādideśa mahābalaḥ
10. Realizing himself defeated and Prahasta slain, the greatly powerful one commanded the formidable army of rakshasas.
द्वारेषु यत्नः क्रियतां प्राकाराश्चाधिरुह्यताम् ।
निद्रावशसमाविष्टः कुम्भकर्णो विबोध्यताम् ॥११॥
11. dvāreṣu yatnaḥ kriyatāṃ prākārāścādhiruhyatām ,
nidrāvaśasamāviṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇo vibodhyatām.
11. dvāreṣu yatnaḥ kriyatām prākārāḥ ca adhiruhyatām
nidrāvaśasamāviṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ vibodhyatām
11. Efforts should be made at the gates, and the ramparts should be ascended. Kumbhakarna, who is completely overcome by sleep, should be awakened.
नव षट् सप्त चाष्टौ च मासान् स्वपिति राक्षसः ।
तं तु बोधयत क्षिप्रं कुम्भकर्णं महाबलम् ॥१२॥
12. nava ṣaṭ sapta cāṣṭau ca māsān svapiti rākṣasaḥ ,
taṃ tu bodhayata kṣipraṃ kumbhakarṇaṃ mahābalam.
12. nava ṣaṭ sapta ca aṣṭau ca māsān svapiti rākṣasaḥ
tam tu bodhayata kṣipram kumbhakarṇam mahābalam
12. That demon (rākṣasa) sleeps for nine, six, seven, or eight months. But you (plural) must quickly awaken that mighty (mahābala) Kumbhakarna.
स हि संख्ये महाबाहुः ककुदं सर्वरक्षसाम् ।
वानरान् राजपुत्रौ च क्षिप्रमेव वधिष्यति ॥१३॥
13. sa hi saṃkhye mahābāhuḥ kakudaṃ sarvarakṣasām ,
vānarān rājaputrau ca kṣiprameva vadhiṣyati.
13. saḥ hi saṃkhye mahābāhuḥ kakudam sarva rakṣasām
vānarān rājaputrau ca kṣipram eva vadhiṣyati
13. For indeed, that mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), who is the chief (kakuda) among all the demons (rākṣasas), will quickly and certainly kill the monkeys and the two princes.
कुम्भकर्णः सदा शेते मूढो ग्राम्यसुखे रतः ।
रामेणाभिनिरस्तस्य संग्रामो ऽस्मिन् सुदारुणे ॥१४॥
14. kumbhakarṇaḥ sadā śete mūḍho grāmyasukhe rataḥ ,
rāmeṇābhinirastasya saṃgrāmo'smin sudāruṇe.
14. kumbhakarṇaḥ sadā śete mūḍhaḥ grāmyasukhe rataḥ
rāmeṇa abhinirastasya saṃgrāmaḥ asmin sudāruṇe
14. Kumbhakarna, deluded and absorbed in mundane pleasures, always sleeps. For the one (Rāvaṇa, implied) who has been repelled by Rāma, there is an exceedingly dreadful battle (saṃgrāma) in this (situation).
भविष्यति न मे शोकः कुम्भकर्णे विबोधिते ।
किं करिष्याम्यहं तेन शक्रतुल्यबलेन हि ॥१५॥
15. bhaviṣyati na me śokaḥ kumbhakarṇe vibodhite ,
kiṃ kariṣyāmyahaṃ tena śakratulyabalena hi.
15. bhaviṣyati na me śokaḥ kumbhakarṇe vibodhite
kim kariṣyāmi aham tena śakratulyabalena hi
15. There will be no sorrow for me once Kumbhakarṇa is awakened. What indeed will I not be able to do with him, whose strength is equal to Indra's?
ईदृशे व्यसने प्राप्ते यो न साह्याय कल्पते ।
ते तु तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य राक्षसाः ॥१६॥
16. īdṛśe vyasane prāpte yo na sāhyāya kalpate ,
te tu tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rākṣasendrasya rākṣasāḥ.
16. īdṛśe vyasane prāpte yaḥ na sāhyāya kalpate te
tu tat vacanam śrutvā rākṣasendrasya rākṣasāḥ
16. When such a calamity has occurred, he who is not capable of providing assistance... But those rākṣasas, having heard the words of the king of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa)...
जग्मुः परमसंभ्रान्ताः कुम्भकर्णनिवेशनम् ।
ते रावणसमादिष्टा मांसशोणितभोजनाः ॥१७॥
17. jagmuḥ paramasaṃbhrāntāḥ kumbhakarṇaniveśanam ,
te rāvaṇasamādiṣṭā māṃsaśoṇitabhojanāḥ.
17. jagmuḥ paramasaṃbhrāntāḥ kumbhakarṇaniveśanam
te rāvaṇasamādiṣṭāḥ māṃsaśoṇitabhojanāḥ
17. They went, greatly agitated, to Kumbhakarṇa's abode. Those rākṣasas, commanded by Rāvaṇa, whose sustenance was flesh and blood...
गन्धमाल्यांस्तथा भक्ष्यानादाय सहसा ययुः ।
तां प्रविश्य महाद्वारां सर्वतो योजनायताम् ॥१८॥
18. gandhamālyāṃstathā bhakṣyānādāya sahasā yayuḥ ,
tāṃ praviśya mahādvārāṃ sarvato yojanāyatām.
18. gandhamālyān tathā bhakṣyān ādāya sahasā yayuḥ
tām praviśya mahādvārām sarvataḥ yojanāyatām
18. Having quickly gathered fragrances, garlands, and various eatables, they proceeded. Entering that vast-doored (abode), which stretched for a yojana in every direction...
कुम्भकर्णगुहां रम्यां सर्वगन्धप्रवाहिनीम् ।
प्रतिष्ठमानाः कृच्छ्रेण यत्नात् प्रविविशुर्गुहाम् ॥१९॥
19. kumbhakarṇaguhāṃ ramyāṃ sarvagandhapravāhinīm ,
pratiṣṭhamānāḥ kṛcchreṇa yatnāt praviviśurguhām.
19. kumbhakarṇaguhām ramyām sarvagandhapravāhinīm
pratiṣṭhamānāḥ kṛcchreṇa yatnāt praviviśuḥ guhām
19. pratiṣṭhamānāḥ kṛcchreṇa yatnāt ramyām

19. With great difficulty and exertion, they entered the delightful cave of Kumbhakarna, which was filled with all sorts of fragrant breezes, and then proceeded further into the cave.
तां प्रविश्य गुहां रम्यां शुभां काञ्चनकुट्टिमाम् ।
ददृशुर्नैरृतव्याघ्रं शयानं भीमदर्शनम् ॥२०॥
20. tāṃ praviśya guhāṃ ramyāṃ śubhāṃ kāñcanakuṭṭimām ,
dadṛśurnairṛtavyāghraṃ śayānaṃ bhīmadarśanam.
20. tām praviśya guhām ramyām śubhām kāñcanakuṭṭimām
dadṛśuḥ nairṛtavyāghram śayānam bhīmadarśanam
20. tām ramyām śubhām kāñcanakuṭṭimām guhām praviśya
bhīmadarśanam śayānam nairṛtavyāghram dadṛśuḥ
20. Having entered that delightful, beautiful cave with its golden floor, they saw the formidable demon-hero (nairṛtavyāghra) lying there, terrifying to behold.
ते तु तं विकृतं सुप्तं विकीर्णमिव पर्वतम् ।
कुम्भकर्णं महानिद्रं सहिताः प्रत्यबोधयन् ॥२१॥
21. te tu taṃ vikṛtaṃ suptaṃ vikīrṇamiva parvatam ,
kumbhakarṇaṃ mahānidraṃ sahitāḥ pratyabodhayan.
21. te tu tam vikṛtam suptam vikīrṇam iva parvatam
kumbhakarṇam mahānidram sahitāḥ pratyabodhayan
21. te sahitāḥ tu vikīrṇam iva parvatam vikṛtam
suptam mahānidram tam kumbhakarṇam pratyabodhayan
21. But they, gathered together, roused that monstrous Kumbhakarna, who was sleeping profoundly, vast like a sprawling mountain.
ऊर्ध्वरोमाञ्चिततनुं श्वसन्तमिव पन्नगम् ।
त्रासयन्तं महाश्वासैः शयानं भीमदर्शनम् ॥२२॥
22. ūrdhvaromāñcitatanuṃ śvasantamiva pannagam ,
trāsayantaṃ mahāśvāsaiḥ śayānaṃ bhīmadarśanam.
22. ūrdhvaromāñcitatantum śvasantam iva pannagam
trāsayantam mahāśvāsaiḥ śayānam bhīmadarśanam
22. ūrdhvaromāñcitatantum śvasantam iva pannagam

22. (They roused him) whose body had hairs standing erect, who was like a hissing serpent, terrifying with his mighty breaths, lying there with a dreadful appearance.
भीमनासापुटं तं तु पातालविपुलाननम् ।
ददृशुर्नैरृतव्याघ्रं कुम्भकर्णं महाबलम् ॥२३॥
23. bhīmanāsāpuṭaṃ taṃ tu pātālavipulānanam ,
dadṛśurnairṛtavyāghraṃ kumbhakarṇaṃ mahābalam.
23. bhīmanāsāpuṭam tam tu pātālavipulānanam
dadṛśuḥ nairṛtavyāghram kumbhakarṇam mahābalam
23. They saw Kumbhakarṇa, that mighty (rākṣasa) (nairṛtavyāghra), who had terrifying nostrils and a mouth as wide as the underworld (pātāla).
ततश्चक्रुर्महात्मानः कुम्भकर्णाग्रतस्तदा ।
मांसानां मेरुसंकाशं राशिं परमतर्पणम् ॥२४॥
24. tataścakrurmahātmānaḥ kumbhakarṇāgratastadā ,
māṃsānāṃ merusaṃkāśaṃ rāśiṃ paramatarpaṇam.
24. tataḥ cakruḥ mahātmānaḥ kumbhakarṇāgrataḥ tadā
māṃsānām merusaṃkāśam rāśim paramatarpaṇam
24. Then, the great (rākṣasas) (mahātmanas) created a supremely satisfying heap of meats, resembling Mount Meru, in front of Kumbhakarṇa at that time.
मृगाणां महिषाणां च वराहाणां च संचयान् ।
चक्रुर्नैरृतशार्दूला राशिमन्नस्य चाद्भुतम् ॥२५॥
25. mṛgāṇāṃ mahiṣāṇāṃ ca varāhāṇāṃ ca saṃcayān ,
cakrurnairṛtaśārdūlā rāśimannasya cādbhutam.
25. mṛgāṇām mahiṣāṇām ca varāhāṇām ca saṃcayān
cakruḥ nairṛtaśārdūlāḥ rāśim annasya ca adbhutam
25. And the tiger-like (rākṣasas) (nairṛtaśārdūlāḥ) made collections of deer, buffaloes, and boars, along with an amazing heap of cooked food.
ततः शोणितकुम्भांश्च मद्यानि विविधानि च ।
पुरस्तात् कुम्भकर्णस्य चक्रुस्त्रिदशशत्रवः ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ śoṇitakumbhāṃśca madyāni vividhāni ca ,
purastāt kumbhakarṇasya cakrustridaśaśatravaḥ.
26. tataḥ śoṇitakumbhān ca madyāni vividhāni ca
purastāt kumbhakarṇasya cakruḥ tridaśaśatravaḥ
26. Then, the enemies of the gods (tridaśaśatravas) placed pots of blood and various intoxicating drinks in front of Kumbhakarṇa.
लिलिपुश्च परार्ध्येन चन्दनेन परंतपम् ।
दिव्यैराच्छादयामासुर्माल्यैर्गन्धैः सुगन्धिभिः ॥२७॥
27. lilipuśca parārdhyena candanena paraṃtapam ,
divyairācchādayāmāsurmālyairgandhaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ.
27. lilipuḥ ca parārdhyena candanena paraṃtapam divyaiḥ
ācchādayāmāsuḥ mālyaiḥ gandhaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ
27. They smeared the tormentor of foes with the most excellent sandalwood, and covered him with divine, fragrant garlands and perfumes.
धूपं सुगन्धं ससृजुस्तुष्टुवुश्च परंतपम् ।
जलदा इव चोनेदुर्यातुधानाः सहस्रशः ॥२८॥
28. dhūpaṃ sugandhaṃ sasṛjustuṣṭuvuśca paraṃtapam ,
jaladā iva coneduryātudhānāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
28. dhūpam sugandham sasṛjuḥ tuṣṭuvuḥ ca paraṃtapam
jaladāḥ iva ca oneduḥ yātudhānāḥ sahasraśaḥ
28. They offered fragrant incense and praised the tormentor of foes. And the rākṣasas, in thousands, roared like thunderclouds.
शङ्खानापूरयामासुः शशाङ्कसदृशप्रभान् ।
तुमुलं युगपच्चापि विनेदुश्चाप्यमर्षिताः ॥२९॥
29. śaṅkhānāpūrayāmāsuḥ śaśāṅkasadṛśaprabhān ,
tumulaṃ yugapaccāpi vineduścāpyamarṣitāḥ.
29. śaṅkhān āpūrayāmāsuḥ śaśāṅkasadṛśaprabhān
tumulam yugapat ca api vineduḥ ca api amarṣitāḥ
29. They blew the conch shells, which shone like the moon. And, enraged, they also roared tumultuously and simultaneously.
नेदुरास्फोटयामासुश्चिक्षिपुस्ते निशाचराः ।
कुम्भकर्णविबोधार्थं चक्रुस्ते विपुलं स्वनम् ॥३०॥
30. nedurāsphoṭayāmāsuścikṣipuste niśācarāḥ ,
kumbhakarṇavibodhārthaṃ cakruste vipulaṃ svanam.
30. neduḥ āsphoṭayāmāsuḥ cikṣipuḥ te niśācarāḥ
kumbhakarṇavibodhārtham cakruḥ te vipulam svanam
30. Those night-wanderers roared, clapped their hands, and threw things. They made a tremendous noise to awaken Kumbhakarna.
सशङ्खभेरीपटहप्रणादमास्फोटितक्ष्वेडितसिंहनादम् ।
दिशो द्रवन्तस्त्रिदिवं किरन्तः श्रुत्वा विहंगाः सहसा निपेतुः ॥३१॥
31. saśaṅkhabherīpaṭahapraṇādamāsphoṭitakṣveḍitasiṃhanādam ,
diśo dravantastridivaṃ kirantaḥ śrutvā vihaṃgāḥ sahasā nipetuḥ.
31. saśaṅkhabherīpaṭahapraṇādam āsphoṭitakṣveḍitasiṃhanādam diśaḥ
dravantaḥ tridivam kirantaḥ śrutvā vihaṃgāḥ sahasā nipetuḥ
31. vihaṃgāḥ diśaḥ dravantaḥ tridivam kirantaḥ saśaṅkhabherīpaṭahapraṇādam
āsphoṭitakṣveḍitasiṃhanādam śrutvā sahasā nipetuḥ
31. Hearing the resounding blasts of conches, kettledrums, and drums, combined with arm-slapping, shouts, and lion-like roars, the birds, who were fleeing in all directions and filling the sky, suddenly fell down.
यदा भृशं तैर्निनदैर्महात्मा न कुम्भकर्णो बुबुधे प्रसुप्तः ।
ततो मुसुण्डीमुसलानि सर्वे रक्षोगणास्ते जगृहुर्गदाश्च ॥३२॥
32. yadā bhṛśaṃ tairninadairmahātmā na kumbhakarṇo bubudhe prasuptaḥ ,
tato musuṇḍīmusalāni sarve rakṣogaṇāste jagṛhurgadāśca.
32. yadā bhṛśam taiḥ ninadaiḥ mahātmā
na kumbhakarṇaḥ bubudhe
prasuptaḥ tataḥ musuṇḍīmusalāni sarve
rakṣogaṇāḥ te jagṛhuḥ gadāḥ ca
32. yadā prasuptaḥ mahātmā kumbhakarṇaḥ
taiḥ ninadaiḥ bhṛśam na
bubudhe tataḥ sarve te rakṣogaṇāḥ
musuṇḍīmusalāni gadāḥ ca jagṛhuḥ
32. When the great-souled (mahātmā) Kumbhakarṇa, who was deeply asleep, did not awaken much even with those loud noises, then all those groups of rākṣasas (demons) took up musuṇḍī maces, pestles, and clubs.
तं शैलशृङ्गैर्मुसलैर्गदाभिर्वृक्षैस्तलैर्मुद्गरमुष्टिभिश्च ।
सुखप्रसुप्तं भुवि कुम्भकर्णं रक्षांस्युदग्राणि तदा निजघ्नुः ॥३३॥
33. taṃ śailaśṛṅgairmusalairgadābhirvṛkṣaistalairmudgaramuṣṭibhiśca ,
sukhaprasuptaṃ bhuvi kumbhakarṇaṃ rakṣāṃsyudagrāṇi tadā nijaghnuḥ.
33. tam śailaśṛṅgaiḥ musalaiḥ gadābhiḥ
vṛkṣaiḥ talaiḥ mudgaramuṣṭibhiḥ ca
sukhaprasuptam bhuvi kumbhakarṇam
rakṣāṃsi udagrāṇi tadā nijaghnuḥ
33. tadā udagrāṇi rakṣāṃsi bhuvi
sukhaprasuptam tam kumbhakarṇam śailaśṛṅgaiḥ
musalaiḥ gadābhiḥ vṛkṣaiḥ
talaiḥ mudgaramuṣṭibhiḥ ca nijaghnuḥ
33. Then, the mighty rākṣasas (demons) struck that Kumbhakarṇa, who was deeply asleep and resting comfortably on the ground, with mountain peaks, pestles, clubs, trees, slaps, and hammers and fists.
तस्य निश्वासवातेन कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः ।
राक्षसा बलवन्तो ऽपि स्थातुं नाशक्नुवन्पुरः ॥३४॥
34. tasya niśvāsavātena kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ ,
rākṣasā balavanto'pi sthātuṃ nāśaknuvanpuraḥ.
34. tasya niśvāsavātena kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ
rākṣasāḥ balavantaḥ api sthātum na aśaknuvan puraḥ

34. Even powerful rākṣasas (demons) were unable to stand before the wind (vāyu) of that rākṣasa (demon) Kumbhakarṇa's exhalation (niśvāsa).
ततो ऽस्य पुरतो गाढं राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः ।
मृदङ्गपणवान्भेरीः शङ्खकुम्भगणांस्तथा ।
दशराक्षससाहस्रं युगपत् पर्यवादयन् ॥३५॥
35. tato'sya purato gāḍhaṃ rākṣasā bhīmavikramāḥ ,
mṛdaṅgapaṇavānbherīḥ śaṅkhakumbhagaṇāṃstathā ,
daśarākṣasasāhasraṃ yugapat paryavādayan.
35. tataḥ asya purataḥ gāḍham rākṣasāḥ
bhīmavikramāḥ mṛdaṅgapaṇavān
bherīḥ śaṅkhakumbhagaṇān tathā

rākṣasāḥ asya purataḥ gāḍham

35. Then, ten thousand Rākṣasas of formidable might intensely and simultaneously played mṛdaṅgas, paṇavas, bherīs, and various groups of conches and pot-drums right in front of him.
नीलाञ्जनचयाकारं ते तु तं प्रत्यबोधयन् ।
अभिघ्नन्तो नदन्तश्च नैव संविविदे तु सः ॥३६॥
36. nīlāñjanacayākāraṃ te tu taṃ pratyabodhayan ,
abhighnanto nadantaśca naiva saṃvivide tu saḥ.

abhighnantaḥ nadantaḥ ca na eva saṃvivide tu saḥ

36. They indeed tried to awaken him, who was as dark as a heap of black collyrium. But even as they struck and roared, he did not become conscious at all.
यदा चैनं न शेकुस्ते प्रतिबोधयितुं तदा ।
ततो गुरुतरं यत्नं दारुणं समुपाक्रमन् ॥३७॥
37. yadā cainaṃ na śekuste pratibodhayituṃ tadā ,
tato gurutaraṃ yatnaṃ dāruṇaṃ samupākraman.
37. yadā ca enam na śekuḥ te pratibodhayitum tadā
tataḥ gurutarum yatnam dāruṇam samupākraman
37. yadā ca te enam pratibodhayitum na śekuḥ tadā
tataḥ gurutarum dāruṇam yatnam samupākraman
37. And when they were unable to awaken him, they then undertook an even greater and more formidable effort.
अश्वानुष्ट्रान् खरान्नागाञ्जघ्नुर्दण्डकशाङ्कुशैः ।
भेरीशङ्खमृदङ्गांश्च सर्वप्राणैरवादयन् ॥३८॥
38. aśvānuṣṭrān kharānnāgāñjaghnurdaṇḍakaśāṅkuśaiḥ ,
bherīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgāṃśca sarvaprāṇairavādayan.

38. They struck horses, camels, donkeys, and elephants with sticks, whips, and goads. And with all their might, they played bherīs, conches, and mṛdaṅgas.
निजघ्नुश्चास्य गात्राणि महाकाष्ठकटं करैः ।
मुद्गरैर्मुसलैश्चैव सर्वप्राणसमुद्यतैः ॥३९॥
39. nijaghnuścāsya gātrāṇi mahākāṣṭhakaṭaṃ karaiḥ ,
mudgarairmusalaiścaiva sarvaprāṇasamudyataiḥ.

39. And they struck his limbs as if he were a huge wooden log, with their hands, as well as with hammers and pestles, exerting all their strength.
तेन शब्देन महता लङ्का समभिपूरिता ।
सपर्वतवना सर्वा सो ऽपि नैव प्रबुध्यते ॥४०॥
40. tena śabdena mahatā laṅkā samabhipūritā ,
saparvatavanā sarvā so'pi naiva prabudhyate.

40. The entire city of Laṅkā, with all its mountains and forests, was completely filled by that great sound. Yet, even he (Kumbhakarṇa) did not awaken.
ततः सहस्रं भेरीणां युगपत् समहन्यत ।
मृष्टकाञ्चनकोणानामसक्तानां समन्ततः ॥४१॥
41. tataḥ sahasraṃ bherīṇāṃ yugapat samahanyata ,
mṛṣṭakāñcanakoṇānāmasaktānāṃ samantataḥ.

41. Then, a thousand kettledrums were struck simultaneously from all sides, with polished golden drumsticks, without interruption.
एवमप्यतिनिद्रस्तु यदा नैव प्रबुध्यत ।
शापस्य वशमापन्नस्ततः क्रुद्धा निशाचराः ॥४२॥
42. evamapyatinidrastu yadā naiva prabudhyata ,
śāpasya vaśamāpannastataḥ kruddhā niśācarāḥ.
42. evam api atinidraḥ tu yadā na eva prabudhyata
śāpasya vaśam āpannaḥ tataḥ kruddhāḥ niśācarāḥ
42. yadā evam api atinidraḥ tu na eva prabudhyata,
śāpasya vaśam āpannaḥ tataḥ niśācarāḥ kruddhāḥ
42. But when, even with all this, he, being in such deep sleep (literally: excessively sleepy), still did not awaken, having fallen under the power of a curse, then the night-demons (niśācarāḥ) became angry.
महाक्रोधसमाविष्टाः सर्वे भीमपराक्रमाः ।
तद् रक्षोबोधयिष्यन्तश्चक्रुरन्ये पराक्रमम् ॥४३॥
43. mahākrodhasamāviṣṭāḥ sarve bhīmaparākramāḥ ,
tad rakṣobodhayiṣyantaścakruranye parākramam.

rakṣaḥ bodhayiṣyantaḥ cakruḥ anye parākramam

43. All of them, possessing formidable prowess and overcome by great anger, made an effort to awaken that demon.
अन्ये भेरीः समाजघ्नुरन्ये चक्रुर्महास्वनम् ।
केशानन्ये प्रलुलुपुः कर्णावन्ये दशन्ति च ।
न कुम्भकर्णः पस्पन्दे महानिद्रावशं गतः ॥४४॥
44. anye bherīḥ samājaghnuranye cakrurmahāsvanam ,
keśānanye pralulupuḥ karṇāvanye daśanti ca ,
na kumbhakarṇaḥ paspande mahānidrāvaśaṃ gataḥ.

44. Others beat drums, and yet others created a great din. Some pulled out his hair, while others bit his ears. But Kumbhakarna, having succumbed to a state of profound sleep, did not stir.
अन्ये च बलिनस्तस्य कूटमुद्गरपाणयः ।
मूर्ध्नि वक्षसि गात्रेषु पातयन् कूटमुद्गरान् ॥४५॥
45. anye ca balinastasya kūṭamudgarapāṇayaḥ ,
mūrdhni vakṣasi gātreṣu pātayan kūṭamudgarān.

45. And other strong ones, wielding heavy iron hammers, struck him on the head, chest, and limbs with those hammers.
रज्जुबन्धनबद्धाभिः शतघ्नीभिश्च सर्वतः ।
वध्यमानो महाकायो न प्राबुध्यत राक्षसः ॥४६॥
46. rajjubandhanabaddhābhiḥ śataghnībhiśca sarvataḥ ,
vadhyamāno mahākāyo na prābudhyata rākṣasaḥ.

46. Though being struck from all sides by 'hundred-killer' weapons (śataghnī), secured with rope bindings, the huge-bodied demon (rākṣasa) did not awaken.
वारणानां सहस्रं तु शरीरे ऽस्य प्रधावितम् ।
कुम्भकर्णस्ततो बुद्धः स्पर्शं परमबुध्यत ॥४७॥
47. vāraṇānāṃ sahasraṃ tu śarīre'sya pradhāvitam ,
kumbhakarṇastato buddhaḥ sparśaṃ paramabudhyata.
47. vāraṇānām sahasram tu asya śarīre pradhāvitam
tataḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ buddhaḥ param sparśam abudhyata
47. Indeed, a thousand elephants rushed upon his body. Then, Kumbhakarna, awakened, perceived a powerful sensation.
स पात्यमानैर्गिरिशृङ्गवृक्षैरचिन्तयंस्तान् विपुलान्प्रहारान् ।
निद्राक्षयात् क्षुद्भयपीडितश्च विजृम्भमाणः सहसोत्पपात ॥४८॥
48. sa pātyamānairgiriśṛṅgavṛkṣairacintayaṃstān vipulānprahārān ,
nidrākṣayāt kṣudbhayapīḍitaśca vijṛmbhamāṇaḥ sahasotpapāta.
48. saḥ nidrākṣayāt ca kṣudbhapīḍitaḥ
pātyamānaiḥ giriśṛṅgavṛkṣaiḥ
tān vipulān prahārān acintayan
vijṛmbhamāṇaḥ sahasā utpapāta
48. He, disregarding the immense blows from the mountain peaks and trees being hurled at him, and afflicted by hunger and fear due to lack of sleep, suddenly rose up with a yawn.
स नागभोगाचलशृङ्गकल्पौ विक्षिप्य बाहू गिरिशृङ्गसारौ ।
विवृत्य वक्त्रं वडवामुखाभं निशाचरो ऽसौ विकृतं जजृम्भे ॥४९॥
49. sa nāgabhogācalaśṛṅgakalpau vikṣipya bāhū giriśṛṅgasārau ,
vivṛtya vaktraṃ vaḍavāmukhābhaṃ niśācaro'sau vikṛtaṃ jajṛmbhe.
49. asau niśācaraḥ saḥ
nāgabhogācalaśṛṅgakalpau giriśṛṅgasārau
bāhū vikṣipya vaḍavāmukhābham
vaktram vivṛtya vikṛtam jajṛmbhe
49. That night-wanderer (niśācara), having stretched out his two arms, which resembled serpent bodies and were as strong as mountain peaks, and having opened his mouth, which was like the submarine fire (vaḍavāmukha), yawned monstrously.
तस्य जाजृम्भमाणस्य वक्त्रं पातालसंनिभम् ।
ददृशे मेरुशृङ्गाग्रे दिवाकर इवोदितः ॥५०॥
50. tasya jājṛmbhamāṇasya vaktraṃ pātālasaṃnibham ,
dadṛśe meruśṛṅgāgre divākara ivoditaḥ.

meruśṛṅgāgre uditaḥ divākaraḥ iva dadṛśe
50. While he was yawning intensely, his mouth, resembling the netherworld (pātāla), was seen like the risen sun at the summit of Mount Meru.
विजृम्भमाणो ऽतिबलः प्रतिबुद्धो निशाचरः ।
निश्वासश्चास्य संजज्ञे पर्वतादिव मारुतः ॥५१॥
51. vijṛmbhamāṇo'tibalaḥ pratibuddho niśācaraḥ ,
niśvāsaścāsya saṃjajñe parvatādiva mārutaḥ.
51. vijṛmbhamāṇaḥ atibalaḥ pratibuddhaḥ niśācaraḥ
niśvāsaḥ ca asya saṃjajñe parvatāt iva mārutaḥ

51. The exceedingly powerful night-wanderer (niśācara), now awakened and stretching, emitted a breath that arose like a wind from a mountain.
रूपमुत्तिष्ठतस्तस्य कुम्भकर्णस्य तद्बभौ ।
तपान्ते सबलाकस्य मेघस्येव विवर्षतः ॥५२॥
52. rūpamuttiṣṭhatastasya kumbhakarṇasya tadbabhau ,
tapānte sabalākasya meghasyeva vivarṣataḥ.
52. rūpam uttiṣṭhataḥ tasya kumbhakarṇasya tat babhau
tapānte sabalākasya meghasya iva vivarṣataḥ

52. As Kumbhakarna rose, his form appeared splendid, like a cloud accompanied by cranes, raining at the end of the hot season.
तस्य दीप्ताग्निसदृशे विद्युत्सदृशवर्चसी ।
ददृशाते महानेत्रे दीप्ताविव महाग्रहौ ॥५३॥
53. tasya dīptāgnisadṛśe vidyutsadṛśavarcasī ,
dadṛśāte mahānetre dīptāviva mahāgrahau.

53. His two great eyes, blazing like fire and shining with the brilliance of lightning, appeared like two radiant great planets.
आदद्बुभुक्षितो मांसं शोणितं तृषितो ऽपिबत् ।
मेदः कुम्भं च मद्यं च पपौ शक्ररिपुस्तदा ॥५४॥
54. ādadbubhukṣito māṃsaṃ śoṇitaṃ tṛṣito'pibat ,
medaḥ kumbhaṃ ca madyaṃ ca papau śakraripustadā.
54. ādat bubhukṣitaḥ māṃsam śoṇitam tṛṣitaḥ apibat
medaḥ kumbham ca madyam ca papau śakraripuḥ tadā
54. tadā bubhukṣitaḥ māṃsam ādat tṛṣitaḥ śoṇitam
apibat śakraripuḥ medaḥ kumbham ca madyam ca papau
54. Then, being hungry, he ate flesh, and being thirsty, he drank blood. The enemy of Indra (śakraripu) also drank a pot of fat and wine.
ततस्तृप्त इति ज्ञात्वा समुत्पेतुर्निशाचराः ।
शिरोभिश्च प्रणम्यैनं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥५५॥
55. tatastṛpta iti jñātvā samutpeturniśācarāḥ ,
śirobhiśca praṇamyainaṃ sarvataḥ paryavārayan.
55. tataḥ tṛptaḥ iti jñātvā samutpetuḥ niśācarāḥ
śirobhiḥ ca praṇamya enam sarvataḥ paryavārayan
55. Then, knowing that he was satisfied, the Rākṣasas (niśācarāḥ) rose up. They bowed their heads to him and surrounded him from all sides.
स सर्वान् सान्त्वयामास नैरृतान्नैरृतर्षभः ।
बोधनाद्विस्मितश्चापि राक्षसानिदमब्रवीत् ॥५६॥
56. sa sarvān sāntvayāmāsa nairṛtānnairṛtarṣabhaḥ ,
bodhanādvismitaścāpi rākṣasānidamabravīt.
56. saḥ sarvān sāntvayāmāsa nairṛtān nairṛtarṣabhaḥ
bodhanāt vismitaḥ ca api rākṣasān idam abravīt
56. He, the foremost among the Rākṣasas (nairṛtarṣabhaḥ), consoled all those Rākṣasas (nairṛtān). And, astonished by being awakened, he spoke this to them.
किमर्थमहमाहत्य भवद्भिः प्रतिबोधितः ।
कच्चित् सुकुशलं राज्ञो भयं वा नेह किं चन ॥५७॥
57. kimarthamahamāhatya bhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ ,
kaccit sukuśalaṃ rājño bhayaṃ vā neha kiṃ cana.
57. kimartham aham āhatya bhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ
kaccit sukuśalam rājñaḥ bhayam vā na iha kim cana
57. Why have I been awakened by you with such force? Is the king's welfare secure? Or is there no danger here at all?
अथ वा ध्रुवमन्येभ्यो भयं परमुपस्थितम् ।
यदर्थमेव त्वरितैर्भवद्भिः प्रतिबोधितः ॥५८॥
58. atha vā dhruvamanyebhyo bhayaṃ paramupasthitam ,
yadarthameva tvaritairbhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ.
58. atha vā dhruvam anyebhyaḥ bhayam param upasthitam
yadartham eva tvaritaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ
58. Or perhaps, surely, a great danger has arisen from others, for which very reason you have hastily awakened me.
अद्य राक्षसराजस्य भयमुत्पाटयाम्यहम् ।
पातयिष्ये महेन्द्रं वा शातयिष्ये तथानलम् ॥५९॥
59. adya rākṣasarājasya bhayamutpāṭayāmyaham ,
pātayiṣye mahendraṃ vā śātayiṣye tathānalam.
59. adya rākṣasarājasya bhayam utpāṭayāmi aham
pātayiṣye mahendram vā śātayiṣye tathā analam
59. aham adya rākṣasarājasya bhayam utpāṭayāmi vā

59. Today, I shall eradicate the fear of the king of rākṣasas. I will fell the great Indra or likewise destroy Agni.
न ह्यल्पकारणे सुप्तं बोधयिष्यति मां भृशम् ।
तदाख्यातार्थतत्त्वेन मत्प्रबोधनकारणम् ॥६०॥
60. na hyalpakāraṇe suptaṃ bodhayiṣyati māṃ bhṛśam ,
tadākhyātārthatattvena matprabodhanakāraṇam.
60. na hi alpakāraṇe suptam bodhayiṣyati mām bhṛśam
tat ākhyāta arthatattvena matprabodhanakāraṇam
60. hi alpakāraṇe suptam mām bhṛśam na bodhayiṣyati
tat arthatattvena matprabodhanakāraṇam ākhyāta
60. One should certainly not awaken me, who am deeply asleep, for a trivial reason. Therefore, explain to me the true nature of the cause for my awakening.
एवं ब्रुवाणं संरब्धं कुम्भकर्णमरिंदमम् ।
यूपाक्षः सचिवो राज्ञः कृताञ्जलिरुवाच ह ॥६१॥
61. evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ saṃrabdhaṃ kumbhakarṇamariṃdamam ,
yūpākṣaḥ sacivo rājñaḥ kṛtāñjaliruvāca ha.
61. evam bruvāṇam saṃrabdham kumbhakarṇam arindamam
yūpākṣaḥ sacivaḥ rājñaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ uvāca ha
61. rājñaḥ sacivaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ yūpākṣaḥ evam bruvāṇam
saṃrabdham arindamam kumbhakarṇam ha uvāca
61. To Kumbhakarna, who was speaking thus, enraged and foe-subduing, Yūpākṣa, the king's minister, indeed spoke with folded hands.
न नो देवकृतं किं चिद्भयमस्ति कदा चन ।
न दैत्यदानवेभ्यो वा भयमस्ति हि तादृशम् ।
यादृशं मानुषं राजन्भयमस्मानुपस्थितम् ॥६२॥
62. na no devakṛtaṃ kiṃ cidbhayamasti kadā cana ,
na daityadānavebhyo vā bhayamasti hi tādṛśam ,
yādṛśaṃ mānuṣaṃ rājanbhayamasmānupasthitam.
62. na naḥ devakṛtam kim cit bhayam asti
kadā cana na daityadānavebhyaḥ
vā bhayam asti hi tādṛśam yādṛśam
mānuṣam rājan bhayam asmān upasthitam
62. rājan naḥ devakṛtam kim cit bhayam
kadā cana na asti na vā daityadānavebhyaḥ
tādṛśam bhayam hi asti
yādṛśam mānuṣam bhayam asmān upasthitam
62. O King, we certainly have no fear from the gods at any time, nor is there such a fear from daityas or dānavas. Rather, a fear such as this, caused by humans, has arisen for us.
वानरैः पर्वताकारैर्लङ्केयं परिवारिता ।
सीताहरणसंतप्ताद् रामान्नस्तुमुलं भयम् ॥६३॥
63. vānaraiḥ parvatākārairlaṅkeyaṃ parivāritā ,
sītāharaṇasaṃtaptād rāmānnastumulaṃ bhayam.
63. vānaraiḥ parvatākāraiḥ laṅkā iyam parivāritā
sītāharaṇasaṃtaptāt rāmāt naḥ tumulam bhayam
63. iyam laṅkā parvatākāraiḥ vānaraiḥ parivāritā
sītāharaṇasaṃtaptāt rāmāt naḥ tumulam bhayam
63. This Laṅkā is surrounded by mountain-sized monkeys. From Rāma, who is agitated by the abduction of Sītā, there is immense fear for us.
एकेन वानरेणेयं पूर्वं दग्धा महापुरी ।
कुमारो निहतश्चाक्षः सानुयात्रः सकुञ्जरः ॥६४॥
64. ekena vānareṇeyaṃ pūrvaṃ dagdhā mahāpurī ,
kumāro nihataścākṣaḥ sānuyātraḥ sakuñjaraḥ.
64. ekena vāṇareṇa iyam pūrvam dagdhā mahāpurī
kumāraḥ nihataḥ ca akṣaḥ sānuyātraḥ sakuñjaraḥ
64. pūrvam ekena vāṇareṇa iyam mahāpurī dagdhā ca
kumāraḥ akṣaḥ sānuyātraḥ sakuñjaraḥ nihataḥ
64. Previously, this great city was burnt by a single monkey. And Prince Akṣa, along with his retinue and elephants, was killed.
स्वयं रक्षोऽधिपश्चापि पौलस्त्यो देवकण्टकः ।
मृतेति संयुगे मुक्तारामेणादित्यतेजसा ॥६५॥
65. svayaṃ rakṣo'dhipaścāpi paulastyo devakaṇṭakaḥ ,
mṛteti saṃyuge muktārāmeṇādityatejasā.
65. svayam ca api rakṣaḥ adhipaḥ paulastyaḥ devakaṇṭakaḥ
ādityatejasā rāmeṇa saṃyuge mṛtā iti muktā

ādityatejasā rāmeṇa saṃyuge mṛtā iti (sītā) muktā
65. Indeed, the lord of the rākṣasas (rakṣas) himself, Rāvaṇa, a descendant of Pulastya and a tormentor of the gods, (was the one from whom) Sītā, thought to be dead, was released in battle by Rāma, who possesses the splendor of the sun.
यन्न देवैः कृतो राजा नापि दैत्यैर्न दानवैः ।
कृतः स इह रामेण विमुक्तः प्राणसंशयात् ॥६६॥
66. yanna devaiḥ kṛto rājā nāpi daityairna dānavaiḥ ,
kṛtaḥ sa iha rāmeṇa vimuktaḥ prāṇasaṃśayāt.
66. yat na devaiḥ kṛtaḥ rājā na api daityaiḥ na dānavaiḥ
kṛtaḥ saḥ iha rāmeṇa vimuktaḥ prāṇasaṃśayāt
66. yat rājā devaiḥ na kṛtaḥ,
na api daityaiḥ,
na dānavaiḥ kṛtaḥ,
saḥ iha rāmeṇa prāṇasaṃśayāt vimuktaḥ
66. That king (Vibhīṣaṇa) who was not appointed by the gods, nor by the daityas, nor by the dānavas, was here released from mortal danger by Rāma.
स यूपाक्षवचः श्रुत्वा भ्रातुर्युधि पराजयम् ।
कुम्भकर्णो विवृत्ताक्षो यूपाक्षमिदमब्रवीत् ॥६७॥
67. sa yūpākṣavacaḥ śrutvā bhrāturyudhi parājayam ,
kumbhakarṇo vivṛttākṣo yūpākṣamidamabravīt.

67. Upon hearing Yūpākṣa's words about his brother's defeat in battle, Kumbhakarṇa, with wide, rolling eyes, said the following to Yūpākṣa.
सर्वमद्यैव यूपाक्ष हरिसैन्यं सलक्ष्मणम् ।
राघवं च रणे हत्वा पश्चाद्द्रक्ष्यामि रावणम् ॥६८॥
68. sarvamadyaiva yūpākṣa harisainyaṃ salakṣmaṇam ,
rāghavaṃ ca raṇe hatvā paścāddrakṣyāmi rāvaṇam.
68. sarvam adya eva yūpākṣa harisainyam salakṣmaṇam
rāghavam ca raṇe hatvā paścāt drakṣyāmi rāvaṇam
68. yūpākṣa adya eva raṇe salakṣmaṇam rāghavam ca
sarvam harisainyam hatvā paścāt rāvaṇam drakṣyāmi
68. O Yūpākṣa, having killed the entire monkey army along with Lakṣmaṇa and Rāma (rāghava) in battle today itself, I will then go to see Rāvaṇa.
राक्षसांस्तर्पयिष्यामि हरीणां मांसशोणितैः ।
रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापि स्वयं पास्यामि शोणितम् ॥६९॥
69. rākṣasāṃstarpayiṣyāmi harīṇāṃ māṃsaśoṇitaiḥ ,
rāmalakṣmaṇayoścāpi svayaṃ pāsyāmi śoṇitam.
69. rākṣasān tarpayiṣyāmi harīṇām māṃsaśoṇitaiḥ
rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ ca api svayam pāsyāmi śoṇitam
69. harīṇām māṃsaśoṇitaiḥ rākṣasān tarpayiṣyāmi
ca api svayam rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ śoṇitam pāsyāmi
69. I will satiate the rākṣasas with the flesh and blood of the monkeys, and I myself will even drink the blood of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
तत्तस्य वाक्यं ब्रुवतो निशम्य सगर्वितं रोषविवृद्धदोषम् ।
महोदरो नैरृतयोधमुख्यः कृताञ्जलिर्वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥७०॥
70. tattasya vākyaṃ bruvato niśamya sagarvitaṃ roṣavivṛddhadoṣam ,
mahodaro nairṛtayodhamukhyaḥ kṛtāñjalirvākyamidaṃ babhāṣe.

sagarvitam roṣavivṛddhadoṣam
mahodaraḥ nairṛtayodhamukhyaḥ

70. Having heard those words of his, spoken with pride and swelling with anger and arrogance, Mahodara, the chief of the rākṣasa (nairṛta) warriors, then spoke these words with folded hands (kṛtāñjali).
रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा गुणदोषु विमृश्य च ।
पश्चादपि महाबाहो शत्रून्युधि विजेष्यसि ॥७१॥
71. rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā guṇadoṣu vimṛśya ca ,
paścādapi mahābāho śatrūnyudhi vijeṣyasi.

71. After hearing Rāvaṇa's words and pondering on their merits and demerits, O mighty-armed one, you will later conquer the enemies in battle.
महोदरवचः श्रुत्वा राक्षसैः परिवारितः ।
कुम्भकर्णो महातेजाः संप्रतस्थे महाबलः ॥७२॥
72. mahodaravacaḥ śrutvā rākṣasaiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
kumbhakarṇo mahātejāḥ saṃpratasthe mahābalaḥ.

72. After hearing Mahodara's words, Kumbhakarṇa, mighty and greatly effulgent, surrounded by demons, set out.
तं समुत्थाप्य भीमाक्षं भीमरूपपराक्रमम् ।
राक्षसास्त्वरिता जग्मुर्दशग्रीवनिवेशनम् ॥७३॥
73. taṃ samutthāpya bhīmākṣaṃ bhīmarūpaparākramam ,
rākṣasāstvaritā jagmurdaśagrīvaniveśanam.

rākṣasāḥ tvaritāḥ jagmuḥ daśagrīvaniveśanam

73. Having roused him, who had terrifying eyes and fearsome form and valor, the demons swiftly went to Rāvaṇa's abode.
ततो गत्वा दशग्रीवमासीनं परमासने ।
ऊचुर्बद्धाञ्जलिपुटाः सर्व एव निशाचराः ॥७४॥
74. tato gatvā daśagrīvamāsīnaṃ paramāsane ,
ūcurbaddhāñjalipuṭāḥ sarva eva niśācarāḥ.
74. tataḥ gatvā daśagrīvam āsīnam paramāsane
ūcuḥ baddhāñjalipuṭāḥ sarve eva niśācarāḥ

74. Then, having approached Rāvaṇa, who was seated on a magnificent throne, all the night-wandering demons spoke to him with folded hands.
प्रबुद्धः कुम्भकर्णो ऽसौ भ्राता ते राक्षसर्षभ ।
कथं तत्रैव निर्यातु द्रक्ष्यसे तमिहागतम् ॥७५॥
75. prabuddhaḥ kumbhakarṇo'sau bhrātā te rākṣasarṣabha ,
kathaṃ tatraiva niryātu drakṣyase tamihāgatam.
75. prabuddhaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ asau bhrātā te rākṣasarṣabha
katham tatra eva niryātu drakṣyase tam iha āgatam
75. rākṣasarṣabha te asau prabuddhaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ

75. Your brother, that awakened Kumbhakarṇa, O chief among rākṣasas! Why should he go out there? You will see him arriving here.
रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्धृष्टो यथान्यायं च पूजितम् ।
द्रष्टुमेनमिहेच्छामि यथान्यायं च पूजितम् ॥७६॥
76. rāvaṇastvabravīddhṛṣṭo yathānyāyaṃ ca pūjitam ,
draṣṭumenamihecchāmi yathānyāyaṃ ca pūjitam.
76. rāvaṇaḥ tu abravīt hṛṣṭaḥ yathānyāyam ca pūjitam
draṣṭum enam iha icchāmi yathānyāyam ca pūjitam
76. rāvaṇaḥ tu hṛṣṭaḥ abravīt draṣṭum enam iha icchāmi
yathānyāyam ca pūjitam yathānyāyam ca pūjitam
76. Rāvaṇa, pleased, then spoke: 'I wish to see him here, duly honored.'
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे पुनरागम्य राक्षसाः ।
कुम्भकर्णमिदं वाक्यमूचू रावणचोदिताः ॥७७॥
77. tathetyuktvā tu te sarve punarāgamya rākṣasāḥ ,
kumbhakarṇamidaṃ vākyamūcū rāvaṇacoditāḥ.
77. tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve punaḥ āgamya rākṣasāḥ
kumbhakarṇam idam vākyam ūcuḥ rāvaṇacoditāḥ
77. tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve rāvaṇacoditāḥ rākṣasāḥ
punaḥ āgamya kumbhakarṇam idam vākyam ūcuḥ
77. Having said 'So be it!', all those rākṣasas, urged by (Rāvaṇa), returned and spoke these words to Kumbhakarṇa.
द्रष्टुं त्वां काङ्क्षते राजा सर्वराक्षसपुंगवः ।
गमने क्रियतां बुद्धिर्भ्रातरं संप्रहर्षय ॥७८॥
78. draṣṭuṃ tvāṃ kāṅkṣate rājā sarvarākṣasapuṃgavaḥ ,
gamane kriyatāṃ buddhirbhrātaraṃ saṃpraharṣaya.
78. draṣṭum tvām kāṅkṣate rājā sarvarākṣasapuṅgavaḥ
gamane kriyatām buddhiḥ bhrātaram sampraharṣaya
78. sarvarākṣasapuṅgavaḥ rājā tvām draṣṭum kāṅkṣate
gamane buddhiḥ kriyatām bhrātaram sampraharṣaya
78. The king, the foremost among all rākṣasas, desires to see you. Therefore, resolve to come forth (for him to see you); gladden your brother greatly.
कुम्भकर्णस्तु दुर्धर्षो भ्रातुराज्ञाय शासनम् ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा महावीर्यः शयनादुत्पपात ह ॥७९॥
79. kumbhakarṇastu durdharṣo bhrāturājñāya śāsanam ,
tathetyuktvā mahāvīryaḥ śayanādutpapāta ha.
79. कुम्भकर्णः तु दुर्धर्षः भ्रातुः आज्ञाय शासनम्
तथा इति उक्त्वा महावीर्यः शयनात् उत्पपात ह
79. दुर्धर्षः महावीर्यः कुम्भकर्णः तु भ्रातुः
शासनम् आज्ञाय तथा इति उक्त्वा शयनात् उत्पपात ह
79. The mighty and unassailable Kumbhakarṇa, upon understanding his brother's command, said "So be it" and rose from his bed.
प्रक्षाल्य वदनं हृष्टः स्नातः परमभूषितः ।
पिपासुस्त्वरयामास पानं बलसमीरणम् ॥८०॥
80. prakṣālya vadanaṃ hṛṣṭaḥ snātaḥ paramabhūṣitaḥ ,
pipāsustvarayāmāsa pānaṃ balasamīraṇam.
80. प्रक्षाल्य वदनम् हृष्टः स्नातः परमभूषितः
पिपासुः त्वरयामास पानम् बलसमीरणम्
80. हृष्टः स्नातः परमभूषितः पिपासुः वदनम्
प्रक्षाल्य बलसमीरणम् पानम् त्वरयामास
80. Joyful, having washed his face, bathed, and greatly adorned, he, being thirsty, eagerly sought a strength-invigorating drink.
ततस्ते त्वरितास्तस्य राज्षसा रावणाज्ञया ।
मद्यं भक्ष्यांश्च विविधान् क्षिप्रमेवोपहारयन् ॥८१॥
81. tataste tvaritāstasya rājṣasā rāvaṇājñayā ,
madyaṃ bhakṣyāṃśca vividhān kṣipramevopahārayan.
81. ततः ते त्वरिताः तस्य राक्षसाः रावणाज्ञया मद्यम्
भक्ष्यान् च विविधान् क्षिप्रम् एव उपहारयन्
81. ततः रावणाज्ञया ते त्वरिताः राक्षसाः तस्य मद्यम्
विविधान् भक्ष्यान् च क्षिप्रम् एव उपहारयन्
81. Then, by Rāvaṇa's command, those swift rākṣasas quickly brought him liquor and various kinds of food.

स गमनायोपचक्रमे ॥८२॥
82. pītvā ghaṭasahasraṃ
sa gamanāyopacakrame.

82. After drinking a thousand pots (of liquor), he prepared to depart.
ईषत्समुत्कटो मत्तस्तेजोबलसमन्वितः ।
कुम्भकर्णो बभौ हृष्टः कालान्तकयमोपमः ॥८३॥
83. īṣatsamutkaṭo mattastejobalasamanvitaḥ ,
kumbhakarṇo babhau hṛṣṭaḥ kālāntakayamopamaḥ.
83. īṣat samutkaṭaḥ mattaḥ tejobalasamanvitaḥ
kumbhakarṇaḥ babhau hṛṣṭaḥ kālāntakayamopamaḥ
83. Kumbhakarna, somewhat formidable and mighty, endowed with splendor and strength, appeared joyful, resembling Yama, the god who brings an end to time.
भ्रातुः स भवनं गच्छन् रक्षोबलसमन्वितः ।
कुम्भकर्णः पदन्यासैरकम्पयत मेदिनीम् ॥८४॥
84. bhrātuḥ sa bhavanaṃ gacchan rakṣobalasamanvitaḥ ,
kumbhakarṇaḥ padanyāsairakampayata medinīm.

kumbhakarṇaḥ padanyāsaiḥ akampayata medinīm
84. As he, Kumbhakarna, went to his brother's palace, accompanied by the demon forces, he made the earth tremble with his footsteps.
स राजमार्गं वपुषा प्रकाशयन् सहस्ररश्मिर्धरणीमिवांशुभिः ।
जगाम तत्राञ्जलिमालया वृतः शतक्रतुर्गेहमिव स्वयम्भुवः ॥८५॥
85. sa rājamārgaṃ vapuṣā prakāśayan sahasraraśmirdharaṇīmivāṃśubhiḥ ,
jagāma tatrāñjalimālayā vṛtaḥ śatakraturgehamiva svayambhuvaḥ.

85. He (Kumbhakarna), illuminating the royal road with his immense body, just as the sun illuminates the earth with its rays, went there, surrounded by a multitude of reverent salutations, like (Indra) Śatakratu going to the abode of (Brahmā) Svayambhū.
के चिच्छरण्यं शरणं स्म रामं व्रजन्ति के चिद्व्यथिताः पतन्ति ।
के चिद्दिशः स्म व्यथिताः प्रयान्ति के चिद्भयार्ता भुवि शेरते स्म ॥८६॥
86. ke ciccharaṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ sma rāmaṃ vrajanti ke cidvyathitāḥ patanti ,
ke ciddiśaḥ sma vyathitāḥ prayānti ke cidbhayārtā bhuvi śerate sma.
86. ke cit śaraṇyam śaraṇam sma rāmam
vrajanti ke cit vyathitāḥ patanti
ke cit diśaḥ sma vyathitāḥ prayānti
ke cit bhayārtāḥ bhuvi śerate sma
86. Some resorted to Rāma, who is worthy of refuge; some, distressed, fell down; some, agitated, fled in various directions; and some, tormented by fear, lay on the ground.
तमद्रिशृङ्गप्रतिमं किरीटिनं स्पृशन्तमादित्यमिवात्मतेजसा ।
वनौकसः प्रेक्ष्य विवृद्धमद्भुतं भयार्दिता दुद्रुविरे ततस्ततः ॥८७॥
87. tamadriśṛṅgapratimaṃ kirīṭinaṃ spṛśantamādityamivātmatejasā ,
vanaukasaḥ prekṣya vivṛddhamadbhutaṃ bhayārditā dudruvire tatastataḥ.

87. Seeing him, who was like a mountain peak, wearing a crown, and with his own radiance seemed to touch the sun, having grown enormously and appearing wondrously terrifying, the forest-dwelling monkeys, tormented by fear, scattered in all directions.
