ततो मूर्ध्ना निपतितं वानरं वानरर्षभः ।
दृष्ट्वैवोद्विग्नहृदयो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१॥

1. tato mūrdhnā nipatitaṃ vānaraṃ vānararṣabhaḥ ,

Then, the chief of monkeys (Sugriva), seeing the monkey prostrated with his head, spoke these words with an agitated heart.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ कस्मात्त्वं पादयोः पतितो मम ।
अभयं ते भवेद्वीर सत्यमेवाभिधीयताम् ॥२॥

2. uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kasmāttvaṃ pādayoḥ patito mama ,

Rise, rise! Why have you fallen at my feet? May you be free from fear (abhayam), O hero! Let the truth indeed be spoken.
स तु विश्वासितस्तेन सुग्रीवेण महात्मना ।
उत्थाय च महाप्राज्ञो वाक्यं दधिमुखो ऽब्रवीत् ॥३॥

3. sa tu viśvāsitastena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā ,
utthāya ca mahāprājño vākyaṃ dadhimukho'bravīt.

But he, having been reassured by the noble-minded (mahātman) Sugriva, then rose, and the very wise Dadhīmukha spoke these words.
नैवर्क्षरजसा राजन्न त्वया नापि वालिना ।
वनं निसृष्टपूर्वं हि भक्षितं तत्तु वानरैः ॥४॥

4. naivarkṣarajasā rājanna tvayā nāpi vālinā ,
vanaṃ nisṛṣṭapūrvaṃ hi bhakṣitaṃ tattu vānaraiḥ.

na eva ṛkṣarajasā rājan na tvayā na api vālinā
vanam nisṛṣṭapūrvam hi bhakṣitam tat tu vānaraiḥ
vanam nisṛṣṭapūrvam hi bhakṣitam tat tu vānaraiḥ

rājan tat vanam ṛkṣarajasā na eva tvayā na api
vālinā nisṛṣṭapūrvam hi tu vānaraiḥ bhakṣitam

O King (rājan), this forest was never before granted by Ṛkṣarajas, nor by you, nor even by Vali. Yet, it has certainly been consumed by monkeys.
एभिः प्रधर्षिताश्चैव वारिता वनरक्षिभिः ।
मधून्यचिन्तयित्वेमान्भक्षयन्ति पिबन्ति च ॥५॥

5. ebhiḥ pradharṣitāścaiva vāritā vanarakṣibhiḥ ,
madhūnyacintayitvemānbhakṣayanti pibanti ca.

Even though attacked and restrained by the forest guards, these monkeys are consuming and drinking these honeys without any concern.
शिष्टमत्रापविध्यन्ति भक्षयन्ति तथापरे ।
निवार्यमाणास्ते सर्वे भ्रुवौ वै दर्शयन्ति हि ॥६॥

6. śiṣṭamatrāpavidhyanti bhakṣayanti tathāpare ,
nivāryamāṇāste sarve bhruvau vai darśayanti hi.

Here, they throw away the leftovers, while others consume them. When prevented, all of them indeed knit their brows (in defiance).
इमे हि संरब्धतरास्तथा तैः संप्रधर्षिताः ।
वारयन्तो वनात्तस्मात् क्रुद्धैर्वानरपुंगवैः ॥७॥

7. ime hi saṃrabdhatarāstathā taiḥ saṃpradharṣitāḥ ,

Indeed, these (monkeys) became very enraged, and they were severely assaulted by those enraged chief monkeys who were attempting to restrain them from that forest.

संरक्तनयनैः क्रोधाद्धरयः संप्रचालिताः ॥८॥

tataḥ taiḥ bahubhiḥ vīraiḥ vānaraiḥ vānararṣabhāḥ

tataḥ taiḥ bahubhiḥ vīraiḥ vānaraiḥ krodhāt

8.
Then, by those many brave monkeys, their eyes reddened with anger, the chief monkeys were driven away.
पाणिभिर्निहताः के चित् के चिज्जानुभिराहताः ।
प्रकृष्टाश्च यथाकामं देवमार्गं च दर्शिताः ॥९॥

9. pāṇibhirnihatāḥ ke cit ke cijjānubhirāhatāḥ ,
prakṛṣṭāśca yathākāmaṃ devamārgaṃ ca darśitāḥ.

pāṇibhiḥ nihātāḥ ke cit ke cit jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ

Some were struck down by hands, while others were assailed with knees. They were dragged about as desired and then shown the path to the celestial realm.
एवमेते हताः शूरास्त्वयि तिष्ठति भर्तरि ।
कृत्स्नं मधुवनं चैव प्रकामं तैः प्रभक्ष्यते ॥१०॥

10. evamete hatāḥ śūrāstvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari ,
kṛtsnaṃ madhuvanaṃ caiva prakāmaṃ taiḥ prabhakṣyate.
kṛtsnaṃ madhuvanaṃ caiva prakāmaṃ taiḥ prabhakṣyate.

evam ete hatāḥ śūrāḥ tvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari
kṛtsnam madhuvanam ca eva prakāmam taiḥ prabhakṣyate
kṛtsnam madhuvanam ca eva prakāmam taiḥ prabhakṣyate

evam ete śūrāḥ hatāḥ tvayi bhartari tiṣṭhati ca
eva kṛtsnam madhuvanam taiḥ prakāmam prabhakṣyate

Thus, these brave warriors are being killed while you, their lord, are present. And the entire Madhuvana forest is being thoroughly devoured by them at will.
एवं विज्ञाप्यमानं तु सुग्रीवं वानरर्षभम् ।
अपृच्छत्तं महाप्राज्ञो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ॥११॥

11. evaṃ vijñāpyamānaṃ tu sugrīvaṃ vānararṣabham ,
apṛcchattaṃ mahāprājño lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.

While Sugrīva, the foremost among the monkeys, was being addressed in this manner, the exceedingly wise Lakṣmaṇa, the slayer of enemy heroes, questioned him.
किमयं वानरो राजन् वनपः प्रत्युपस्थितः ।
कं चार्थमभिनिर्दिश्य दुःखितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
कं चार्थमभिनिर्दिश्य दुःखितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. kimayaṃ vānaro rājan vanapaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ ,
kaṃ cārthamabhinirdiśya duḥkhito vākyamabravīt.

kim ayam vānaraḥ rājan vanapaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ kam
ca artham abhinirdiśya duḥkhitaḥ vākyam abravīt

O King, why has this monkey, the guardian of the forest, presented himself here? And, being distressed, with what purpose did he speak these words?
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना ।
लक्ष्मणं प्रत्युवाचेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥१३॥
लक्ष्मणं प्रत्युवाचेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥१३॥
13. evamuktastu sugrīvo lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā ,
lakṣmaṇaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
lakṣmaṇaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.

evam uktaḥ tu sugrīvaḥ lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā
lakṣmaṇam prati uvāca idam vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
lakṣmaṇam prati uvāca idam vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ

mahātmanā lakṣmaṇena evam uktaḥ tu vākyaviśāradaḥ
sugrīvaḥ lakṣmaṇam prati idam vākyam uvāca

Thus addressed by the magnanimous Lakṣmaṇa, Sugrīva, who was skilled in speech, replied to Lakṣmaṇa with these words.
आर्य लक्ष्मण संप्राह वीरो दधिमुखः कपिः ।
अङ्गदप्रमुखैर्वीरैर्भक्षितं मधुवानरैः ॥१४॥

14. ārya lakṣmaṇa saṃprāha vīro dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ ,
aṅgadapramukhairvīrairbhakṣitaṃ madhuvānaraiḥ.

ārya lakṣmaṇa sampra āha vīraḥ dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ

ārya lakṣmaṇa vīraḥ kapiḥ dadhimukhaḥ sampra āha
aṅgadapramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ vānaraiḥ madhu bhakṣitam
aṅgadapramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ vānaraiḥ madhu bhakṣitam
14.
“O noble Lakṣmaṇa,” reported the brave monkey Dadhimukha, “the honey has been consumed by the valiant monkeys, led by Aṅgada.”
नैषामकृतकृत्यानामीदृशः स्यादुपक्रमः ।
वनं यथाभिपन्नं तैः साधितं कर्म वानरैः ॥१५॥
वनं यथाभिपन्नं तैः साधितं कर्म वानरैः ॥१५॥
15. naiṣāmakṛtakṛtyānāmīdṛśaḥ syādupakramaḥ ,
vanaṃ yathābhipannaṃ taiḥ sādhitaṃ karma vānaraiḥ.
vanaṃ yathābhipannaṃ taiḥ sādhitaṃ karma vānaraiḥ.

na eṣām akṛtakṛtyānām īdṛśaḥ syāt upakramaḥ vanam
yathā abhipannam taiḥ sādhitaM karma vānaraiḥ
yathā abhipannam taiḥ sādhitaM karma vānaraiḥ

eṣām akṛtakṛtyānām īdṛśaḥ upakramaḥ na syāt yathā
vanam abhipannam taiḥ vānaraiḥ karma sādhitam

Such an undertaking would not be possible for those who have not accomplished their mission. Rather, the monkeys must have fulfilled their task, just as they have entered this grove.
दृष्टा देवी न संदेहो न चान्येन हनूमता ।
न ह्यन्यः साधने हेतुः कर्मणो ऽस्य हनूमतः ॥१६॥
न ह्यन्यः साधने हेतुः कर्मणो ऽस्य हनूमतः ॥१६॥
16. dṛṣṭā devī na saṃdeho na cānyena hanūmatā ,
na hyanyaḥ sādhane hetuḥ karmaṇo'sya hanūmataḥ.
na hyanyaḥ sādhane hetuḥ karmaṇo'sya hanūmataḥ.

dṛṣṭā devī na saṃdehaḥ na ca anyena hanūmatā na
hi anyaḥ sādhane hetuḥ karmaṇaḥ asya hanūmataḥ
hi anyaḥ sādhane hetuḥ karmaṇaḥ asya hanūmataḥ

devī dṛṣṭā na saṃdehaḥ ca na anyena hanūmatā hi
asya karmaṇaḥ sādhane hanūmataḥ anyaḥ hetuḥ na
asya karmaṇaḥ sādhane hanūmataḥ anyaḥ hetuḥ na

The princess (Sītā) has certainly been seen, there is no doubt. And indeed, by none other than Hanumān. For there is no other means (hetu) for accomplishing this task (karma) than Hanumān.
कार्यसिद्धिर्हनुमति मतिश्च हरिपुंगव ।
व्यवसायश्च वीर्यं च श्रुतं चापि प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१७॥

17. kāryasiddhirhanumati matiśca haripuṃgava ,
vyavasāyaśca vīryaṃ ca śrutaṃ cāpi pratiṣṭhitam.

kāryasiddhiḥ hanumati matiḥ ca haripuṅgava
vyavasāyaḥ ca vīryam ca śrutam ca api pratiṣṭhitam
vyavasāyaḥ ca vīryam ca śrutam ca api pratiṣṭhitam

haripuṅgava kāryasiddhiḥ matiḥ ca vyavasāyaḥ ca
vīryam ca śrutam ca api hanumati pratiṣṭhitam
vīryam ca śrutam ca api hanumati pratiṣṭhitam
17.
O chief of monkeys, success in endeavors, intelligence, resolve, strength, and knowledge are all firmly established in Hanumat.
जाम्बवान्यत्र नेता स्यादङ्गदस्य बलेश्वरः ।
हनूमांश्चाप्यधिष्ठाता न तस्य गतिरन्यथा ॥१८॥
हनूमांश्चाप्यधिष्ठाता न तस्य गतिरन्यथा ॥१८॥
18. jāmbavānyatra netā syādaṅgadasya baleśvaraḥ ,
hanūmāṃścāpyadhiṣṭhātā na tasya gatiranyathā.
hanūmāṃścāpyadhiṣṭhātā na tasya gatiranyathā.

jāmbavān yatra netā syāt aṅgadasya baleśvaraḥ
hanūmān ca api adhiṣṭhātā na tasya gatiḥ anyathā

When Jambavan is the leader, and the mighty Angada (is present), and Hanumat is also the supervisor, then the outcome cannot be otherwise (i.e., it is destined for success).
अङ्गदप्रमुखैर्वीरैर्हतं मधुवनं किल ।
विचिन्त्य दक्षिणामाशामागतैर्हरिपुंगवैः ॥१९॥

19. aṅgadapramukhairvīrairhataṃ madhuvanaṃ kila ,
vicintya dakṣiṇāmāśāmāgatairharipuṃgavaiḥ.

vicintya dakṣiṇām āśām āgataiḥ haripuṅgavaiḥ

dakṣiṇām āśām vicintya āgataiḥ aṅgadapramukhaiḥ
vīraiḥ haripuṅgavaiḥ madhuvanam hatam kila

It is said that the honey-forest (Madhuvana) was destroyed by the heroic chief monkeys, led by Angada, who had returned after searching the southern direction.
आगतैश्च प्रविष्टं तद् यथा मधुवनं हि तैः ।
धर्षितं च वनं कृत्स्नमुपयुक्तं च वानरैः ।
वारिताः सहिताः पालास्तथा जानुभिराहताः ॥२०॥

20. āgataiśca praviṣṭaṃ tad yathā madhuvanaṃ hi taiḥ ,
dharṣitaṃ ca vanaṃ kṛtsnamupayuktaṃ ca vānaraiḥ ,
vāritāḥ sahitāḥ pālāstathā jānubhirāhatāḥ.
dharṣitaṃ ca vanaṃ kṛtsnamupayuktaṃ ca vānaraiḥ ,
vāritāḥ sahitāḥ pālāstathā jānubhirāhatāḥ.

āgataiḥ ca praviṣṭam tat yathā
madhuvanam hi taiḥ dharṣitam ca vanam
kṛtsnam upayuktam ca vānaraiḥ vāritāḥ
sahitāḥ pālāḥ tathā jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ
madhuvanam hi taiḥ dharṣitam ca vanam
kṛtsnam upayuktam ca vānaraiḥ vāritāḥ
sahitāḥ pālāḥ tathā jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ

hi āgataiḥ taiḥ tat madhuvanam yathā
ca praviṣṭam kṛtsnam vanam ca
vānaraiḥ dharṣitam ca upayuktam vāritāḥ
sahitāḥ pālāḥ tathā jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ
ca praviṣṭam kṛtsnam vanam ca
vānaraiḥ dharṣitam ca upayuktam vāritāḥ
sahitāḥ pālāḥ tathā jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ

Indeed, the returning monkeys entered that honey-forest; the entire forest was then assailed and consumed by them. The guards, who tried to stop them, were collectively struck down by their knees.
एतदर्थमयं प्राप्तो वक्तुं मधुरवागिह ।
नाम्ना दधिमुखो नाम हरिः प्रख्यातविक्रमः ॥२१॥

For this purpose, this sweet-spoken monkey, named Dadhimukha, renowned for his valor, has arrived here to speak.
दृष्टा सीता महाबाहो सौमित्रे पश्य तत्त्वतः ।
अभिगम्य यथा सर्वे पिबन्ति मधु वानराः ॥२२॥

O mighty-armed one, O son of Sumitra, Sita has been seen! Understand this truly: just as all the monkeys approach and drink honey.
न चाप्यदृष्ट्वा वैदेहीं विश्रुताः पुरुषर्षभ ।
वनं दात्त वरं दिव्यं धर्षयेयुर्वनौकसः ॥२३॥

And, O best of men, these renowned forest-dwellers would certainly not violate this divine boon of a forest without having seen Vaidehi.
ततः प्रहृष्टो धर्मात्मा लक्ष्मणः सहराघवः ।
श्रुत्वा कर्णसुखां वाणीं सुग्रीववदनाच्च्युताम् ॥२४॥

Then, the virtuous (dharma) Lakshmana, accompanied by Rama, became greatly delighted after hearing the pleasant words that emanated from Sugriva's mouth.
प्राहृष्यत भृशं रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महायशाः ।
श्रुत्वा दधिमुखस्येदं सुग्रीवस्तु प्रहृष्य च ।
वनपालं पुनर्वाक्यं सुग्रीवः प्रत्यभाषत ॥२५॥
श्रुत्वा दधिमुखस्येदं सुग्रीवस्तु प्रहृष्य च ।

Rama and the highly renowned Lakshmana rejoiced greatly. Sugriva, having also greatly rejoiced upon hearing this from Dadhimukha, then spoke again to the guardian of the forest.
प्रीतो ऽस्मि सौम्य यद्भुक्तं वनं तैः कृतकर्मभिः ।
मर्षितं मर्षणीयं च चेष्टितं कृतकर्मणाम् ॥२६॥

26. prīto'smi saumya yadbhuktaṃ vanaṃ taiḥ kṛtakarmabhiḥ ,

My gentle friend, I am pleased that the forest was enjoyed by those who have accomplished their task. The actions of those who have fulfilled their duty are forgiven and pardonable.
इच्छामि शीघ्रं हनुमत्प्रधानान् शाखामृगांस्तान्मृगराजदर्पान् ।
द्रष्टुं कृतार्थान् सह राघवाभ्यां श्रोतुं च सीताधिगमे प्रयत्नम् ॥२७॥
द्रष्टुं कृतार्थान् सह राघवाभ्यां श्रोतुं च सीताधिगमे प्रयत्नम् ॥२७॥
27. icchāmi śīghraṃ hanumatpradhānān śākhāmṛgāṃstānmṛgarājadarpān ,
draṣṭuṃ kṛtārthān saha rāghavābhyāṃ śrotuṃ ca sītādhigame prayatnam.

I desire to quickly see those monkey chiefs, led by Hanumat and proud as lions, successful in their mission, along with Rama and Lakshmana; and to hear about their efforts (prayatna) in discovering Sita.
