रामस्तु भृशमायस्तो निःश्वसन्निव कुञ्जरः ।
जगाम सहितो भ्रात्रा मातुरन्तःपुरं वशी ॥१॥
1. rāmastu bhṛśamāyasto niḥśvasanniva kuñjaraḥ ,
jagāma sahito bhrātrā māturantaḥpuraṃ vaśī.

1. But the self-controlled (vaśī) Rama, greatly distressed and sighing like an elephant, went to his mother's inner chambers accompanied by his brother.
सो ऽपश्यत् पुरुषं तत्र वृद्धं परमपूजितम् ।
उपविष्टं गृहद्वारि तिष्ठतश्चापरान्बहून् ॥२॥
2. so'paśyat puruṣaṃ tatra vṛddhaṃ paramapūjitam ,
upaviṣṭaṃ gṛhadvāri tiṣṭhataścāparānbahūn.
2. saḥ apaśyat puruṣam tatra vṛddham paramapūjitam
upaviṣṭam gṛhadvāri tiṣṭhataḥ ca aparān bahūn

2. There he saw an old, highly revered (paramapūjitam) man seated at the entrance of the house, and many others standing.
प्रविश्य प्रथमां कक्ष्यां द्वितीयायां ददर्श सः ।
ब्राह्मणान् वेदसंपन्नान् वृद्धान् राज्ञाभिसत्कृतान् ॥३॥
3. praviśya prathamāṃ kakṣyāṃ dvitīyāyāṃ dadarśa saḥ ,
brāhmaṇān vedasaṃpannān vṛddhān rājñābhisatkṛtān.

3. Having entered the first chamber, he (Rama) then saw in the second several aged (vṛddhān) Brahmins (brāhmaṇān), well-versed in the Vedas and honored by the king.
प्रणम्य रामस्तान् वृद्धांस्तृतीयायां ददर्श सः ।
स्त्रियो वृद्धाश्च बालाश्च द्वाररक्षणतत्पराः ॥४॥
4. praṇamya rāmastān vṛddhāṃstṛtīyāyāṃ dadarśa saḥ ,
striyo vṛddhāśca bālāśca dvārarakṣaṇatatparāḥ.

4. Having bowed to those old men (the Brahmins), Rama then saw in the third chamber both aged (vṛddhāḥ) women and young women (bālāḥ) who were devoted to guarding the entrance.
वर्धयित्वा प्रहृष्टास्ताः प्रविश्य च गृहं स्त्रियः ।
न्यवेदयन्त त्वरिता राम मातुः प्रियं तदा ॥५॥
5. vardhayitvā prahṛṣṭāstāḥ praviśya ca gṛhaṃ striyaḥ ,
nyavedayanta tvaritā rāma mātuḥ priyaṃ tadā.
5. vardhayitvā prahr̥ṣṭāḥ tāḥ praviśya ca gr̥ham
striyaḥ nyavedayanta tvaritāḥ rāma mātuḥ priyam tadā

5. O Rāma, those women, having celebrated and being greatly delighted, entered the house and then swiftly announced the good news to your mother.
कौसल्यापि तदा देवी रात्रिं स्थित्वा समाहिता ।
प्रभाते त्वकरोत् पूजां विष्णोः पुत्रहितैषिणी ॥६॥
6. kausalyāpi tadā devī rātriṃ sthitvā samāhitā ,
prabhāte tvakarot pūjāṃ viṣṇoḥ putrahitaiṣiṇī.
6. kausalyā api tadā devī rātrim sthitvā samāhitā
prabhāte tu akarot pūjām viṣṇoḥ putrahitaiṣiṇī
6. tadā devī kausalyā api putrahitaiṣiṇī rātrim

6. Then, Queen Kausalyā also, having remained composed throughout the night, performed worship of Viṣṇu in the morning, desiring her son's welfare.
सा क्षौमवसना हृष्टा नित्यं व्रतपरायणा ।
अग्निं जुहोति स्म तदा मन्त्रवत् कृतमङ्गला ॥७॥
7. sā kṣaumavasanā hṛṣṭā nityaṃ vrataparāyaṇā ,
agniṃ juhoti sma tadā mantravat kṛtamaṅgalā.

agnim juhoti sma tadā mantravat kr̥tamaṅgalā

7. She, adorned in silk garments, delighted and always devoted to sacred vows, then offered oblations into the fire with sacred formulas, after performing auspicious rites.
प्रविश्य च तदा रामो मातुरन्तःपुरं शुभम् ।
ददर्श मातरं तत्र हावयन्तीं हुताशनम् ॥८॥
8. praviśya ca tadā rāmo māturantaḥpuraṃ śubham ,
dadarśa mātaraṃ tatra hāvayantīṃ hutāśanam.
8. praviśya ca tadā rāmaḥ mātuḥ antaḥpuram śubham
dadarśa mātaram tatra hāvayantīm hutāśanam
8. ca tadā rāmaḥ mātuḥ śubham antaḥpuram praviśya

8. And then Rāma, having entered his mother's beautiful inner apartment, saw his mother there offering oblations into the fire.
सा चिरस्यात्मजं दृष्ट्वा मातृनन्दनमागतम् ।
अभिचक्राम संहृष्टा किशोरं वडवा यथा ॥९॥
9. sā cirasyātmajaṃ dṛṣṭvā mātṛnandanamāgatam ,
abhicakrāma saṃhṛṣṭā kiśoraṃ vaḍavā yathā.
9. sā cirasya ātmajam dṛṣṭvā mātṛnandanam āgatam
abhicakrāma saṃhṛṣṭā kiśoram vaḍavā yathā
9. sā cirasya mātṛnandanam āgatam ātmajam dṛṣṭvā
saṃhṛṣṭā vaḍavā kiśoram yathā abhicakrāma
9. Seeing her son, who had returned after a long time and was a delight to his mother, she, greatly delighted, approached him, just as a mare approaches her colt.
तमुवाच दुराधर्षं राघवं सुतमात्मनः ।
कौसल्या पुत्रवात्सल्यादिदं प्रियहितं वचः ॥१०॥
10. tamuvāca durādharṣaṃ rāghavaṃ sutamātmanaḥ ,
kausalyā putravātsalyādidaṃ priyahitaṃ vacaḥ.
10. tam uvāca durādharṣam rāghavam sutam ātmanaḥ
kausalyā putravātsalyāt idam priyahitam vacaḥ
10. kausalyā putravātsalyāt ātmanaḥ durādharṣam
sutam rāghavam tam idam priyahitam vacaḥ uvāca
10. Kaushalya, out of motherly affection for her son, spoke these pleasing and beneficial words to her formidable son (Raghava).
वृद्धानां धर्मशीलानां राजर्षीणां महात्मनाम् ।
प्राप्नुह्यायुश्च कीर्तिं च धर्मं चोपहितं कुले ॥११॥
11. vṛddhānāṃ dharmaśīlānāṃ rājarṣīṇāṃ mahātmanām ,
prāpnuhyāyuśca kīrtiṃ ca dharmaṃ copahitaṃ kule.
11. vṛddhānām dharmaśīlānām rājarṣīṇām mahātmanām
prāpnuhi āyuḥ ca kīrtim ca dharmam ca upahitam kule
11. vṛddhānām dharmaśīlānām rājarṣīṇām mahātmanām āyuḥ
ca kīrtim ca kule upahitam dharmam ca prāpnuhi
11. May you attain the long life, fame, and the (dharma) (intrinsic nature/constitution) firmly established in your family, like (that of) the elders, the righteous, the royal sages, and the great-souled ones.
सत्यप्रतिज्ञं पितरं राजानं पश्य राघव ।
अद्यैव हि त्वां धर्मात्मा यौवराज्ये ऽभिषेक्ष्यति ॥१२॥
12. satyapratijñaṃ pitaraṃ rājānaṃ paśya rāghava ,
adyaiva hi tvāṃ dharmātmā yauvarājye'bhiṣekṣyati.
12. satyapratijñam pitaram rājānam paśya rāghava adya
eva hi tvām dharmātmā yauvarājye abhiṣekṣyati
12. rāghava,
satyapratijñam pitaram rājānam paśya.
hi dharmātmā adya eva tvām yauvarājye abhiṣekṣyati
12. O Raghava, behold your father, the king, who is truthful to his promises. Indeed, that righteous (dharma)-souled one will consecrate you as crown prince today itself.
मातरं राघवः किं चित् प्रसार्याञ्जलिमब्रवीत् ।
स स्वभावविनीतश्च गौरवाच्च तदानतः ॥१३॥
13. mātaraṃ rāghavaḥ kiṃ cit prasāryāñjalimabravīt ,
sa svabhāvavinītaśca gauravācca tadānataḥ.
13. mātaram rāghavaḥ kim cit prasārya añjalim abravīt
| saḥ svabhāvavinītaḥ ca gauravāt ca tadā ānataḥ
13. rāghavaḥ svabhāvavinītaḥ ca gauravāt ca tadā
ānataḥ kim cit añjalim prasārya mātaram abravīt
13. Rāghava (Rāma), naturally humble and bowing then out of respect, extended his folded hands slightly and spoke to his mother.
देवि नूनं न जानीषे महद्भयमुपस्थितम् ।
इदं तव च दुःखाय वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणस्य च ॥१४॥
14. devi nūnaṃ na jānīṣe mahadbhayamupasthitam ,
idaṃ tava ca duḥkhāya vaidehyā lakṣmaṇasya ca.
14. devi nūnam na jānīṣe mahat bhayam upasthitam |
idam tava ca duḥkhāya vaidehyā lakṣmaṇasya ca
14. devi nūnam mahat upasthitam bhayam na jānīṣe
idam tava ca vaidehyā ca lakṣmaṇasya ca duḥkhāya
14. O divine mother, surely you are unaware of the great danger that has arisen. This will bring distress to you, and to Vaidehī (Sītā), and to Lakṣmaṇa.
चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि वत्स्यामि विजने वने ।
मधुमूलफलैर्जीवन् हित्वा मुनिवदामिषम् ॥१५॥
15. caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vijane vane ,
madhumūlaphalairjīvan hitvā munivadāmiṣam.
15. caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vijane vane |
madhumūlaphalaiḥ jīvan hitvā munivat āmiṣam
15. hi aham caturdaśa varṣāṇi vijane vane vatsyāmi
munivat āmiṣam hitvā madhumūlaphalaiḥ jīvan
15. Indeed, I shall dwell for fourteen years in a desolate forest, living on honey, roots, and fruits, abandoning all flesh (āmiṣa) just like a sage.
भरताय महाराजो यौवराज्यं प्रयच्छति ।
मां पुनर्दण्डकारण्यं विवासयति तापसं ॥१६॥
16. bharatāya mahārājo yauvarājyaṃ prayacchati ,
māṃ punardaṇḍakāraṇyaṃ vivāsayati tāpasaṃ.
16. bharatāya mahārājaḥ yauvarājyam prayacchati
| mām punaḥ daṇḍakāraṇyam vivāsayati tāpasam
16. mahārājaḥ bharatāya yauvarājyam prayacchati
punaḥ mām tāpasam daṇḍakāraṇyam vivāsayati
16. The great king is bestowing the crown principality upon Bharata, but he is banishing me, in the guise of an ascetic, to the Daṇḍaka forest.
तामदुःखोचितां दृष्ट्वा पतितां कदलीमिव ।
रामस्तूत्थापयामास मातरं गतचेतसं ॥१७॥
17. tāmaduḥkhocitāṃ dṛṣṭvā patitāṃ kadalīmiva ,
rāmastūtthāpayāmāsa mātaraṃ gatacetasaṃ.
17. tām aduḥkhocitām dṛṣṭvā patitām kadalīm iva
rāmaḥ tu utthāpayāmāsa mātaram gatacetasam
17. rāmaḥ tu aduḥkhocitām gatacetasam kadalīm
iva patitām tām dṛṣṭvā mātaram utthāpayāmāsa
17. Seeing his mother, who was accustomed to no suffering, fallen to the ground like a plantain tree and unconscious, Rama lifted her up.
उपावृत्योत्थितां दीनां वडवामिव वाहिताम् ।
पांशुगुण्ठितसर्वाग्नीं विममर्श च पाणिना ॥१८॥
18. upāvṛtyotthitāṃ dīnāṃ vaḍavāmiva vāhitām ,
pāṃśuguṇṭhitasarvāgnīṃ vimamarśa ca pāṇinā.
18. upāvṛtya utthitām dīnām vaḍavām iva vāhitām
pāṃśuguṇṭhitasarvāṅgīm vimamarśa ca pāṇinā
18. upāvṛtya ca pāṇinā utthitām dīnām vāhitām
vaḍavām iva pāṃśuguṇṭhitasarvāṅgīm vimamarśa
18. Having approached her, who had risen, distressed like an overworked mare, her entire body covered with dust, he gently touched her with his hand.
सा राघवमुपासीनमसुखार्ता सुखोचिता ।
उवाच पुरुषव्याघ्रमुपशृण्वति लक्ष्मणे ॥१९॥
19. sā rāghavamupāsīnamasukhārtā sukhocitā ,
uvāca puruṣavyāghramupaśṛṇvati lakṣmaṇe.
19. sā rāghavam upāsīnam asukha-ārtā sukha-ucitā
uvāca puruṣa-vyāghram upaśṛṇvati lakṣmaṇe
19. asukhā-ārtā sukha-ucitā sā lakṣmaṇe upaśṛṇvati
puruṣa-vyāghram upāsīnam rāghavam uvāca
19. She, afflicted by sorrow yet accustomed to happiness, spoke to Rama, the tiger among men, who was seated near her, while Lakshmana listened nearby.
यदि पुत्र न जायेथा मम शोकाय राघव ।
न स्म दुःखमतो भूयः पश्येयमहमप्रजा ॥२०॥
20. yadi putra na jāyethā mama śokāya rāghava ,
na sma duḥkhamato bhūyaḥ paśyeyamahamaprajā.
20. yadi putra na jāyethāḥ mama śokāya rāghava na
sma duḥkham ataḥ bhūyaḥ paśyeyam aham aprajā
20. putra rāghava yadi mama śokāya na jāyethāḥ,
aprajā aham ataḥ bhūyaḥ duḥkham na sma paśyeyam
20. O son, O Rāghava, if you had not been born to cause me this sorrow, then I, childless, would not have seen a greater grief than this.
एक एव हि वन्ध्यायाः शोको भवति मानवः ।
अप्रजास्मीति संतापो न ह्यन्यः पुत्र विद्यते ॥२१॥
21. eka eva hi vandhyāyāḥ śoko bhavati mānavaḥ ,
aprajāsmīti saṃtāpo na hyanyaḥ putra vidyate.
21. eka eva hi vandhyāyāḥ śokaḥ bhavati mānavaḥ aprajā
asmi iti saṃtāpaḥ na hi anyaḥ putra vidyate
21. putra hi mānavaḥ vandhyāyāḥ ekaḥ eva śokaḥ aprajā
asmi iti saṃtāpaḥ bhavati anyaḥ na hi vidyate
21. O son, for a barren woman, the only human sorrow is the anguish (saṃtāpa) of being childless; no other sorrow exists.
न दृष्टपूर्वं कल्याणं सुखं वा पतिपौरुषे ।
अपि पुत्रे विपश्येयमिति रामास्थितं मया ॥२२॥
22. na dṛṣṭapūrvaṃ kalyāṇaṃ sukhaṃ vā patipauruṣe ,
api putre vipaśyeyamiti rāmāsthitaṃ mayā.
22. na dṛṣṭapūrvam kalyāṇam sukham vā patipauruṣe
api putre vipaśyeyam iti rāma āsthitam mayā
22. rāma mayā patipauruṣe kalyāṇam vā sukham na
dṛṣṭapūrvam api putre vipaśyeyam iti āsthitam
22. O Rāma, I have never before experienced well-being or happiness in my husband's valor; I had hoped that I might find it in a son – this was my resolve.
सा बहून्यमनोज्ञानि वाक्यानि हृदयच्छिदाम् ।
अहं श्रोष्ये सपत्नीनामवराणां वरा सती ।
अतो दुःखतरं किं नु प्रमदानां भविष्यति ॥२३॥
23. sā bahūnyamanojñāni vākyāni hṛdayacchidām ,
ahaṃ śroṣye sapatnīnāmavarāṇāṃ varā satī ,
ato duḥkhataraṃ kiṃ nu pramadānāṃ bhaviṣyati.
23. sā bahūni amanojñāni vākyāni
hṛdayacchidām aham śroṣye sapatnīnām
avarāṇām varā satī ataḥ duḥkhataram
kim nu pramadānām bhaviṣyati
23. sā aham varā satī bahūni amanojñāni
hṛdayacchidām avarāṇām sapatnīnām
vākyāni śroṣye ataḥ pramadānām
kim nu duḥkhataram bhaviṣyati
23. Even I, being superior, will have to listen to many unpleasant, heart-rending words from my inferior co-wives. What, indeed, could be more sorrowful for women than this?
त्वयि संनिहिते ऽप्येवमहमासं निराकृता ।
किं पुनः प्रोषिते तात ध्रुवं मरणमेव मे ॥२४॥
24. tvayi saṃnihite'pyevamahamāsaṃ nirākṛtā ,
kiṃ punaḥ proṣite tāta dhruvaṃ maraṇameva me.
24. tvayi saṃnihite api evam aham āsam nirākṛtā
kim punaḥ proṣite tāta dhruvam maraṇam eva me
24. tvayi saṃnihite api aham evam nirākṛtā āsam
tāta proṣite punaḥ kim me dhruvam maraṇam eva
24. Even with you present, I was thus scorned. How much more so, O dear one, when you are far away? Surely, only death (maraṇa) awaits me.
यो हि मां सेवते कश्चिदथ वाप्यनुवर्तते ।
कैकेय्याः पुत्रमन्वीक्ष्य स जनो नाभिभाषते ॥२५॥
25. yo hi māṃ sevate kaścidatha vāpyanuvartate ,
kaikeyyāḥ putramanvīkṣya sa jano nābhibhāṣate.
25. yaḥ hi mām sevate kaścit atha vā api anuvaṛtate |
kaikeyyāḥ putram anvīkṣya saḥ janaḥ na abhibhāṣate
25. hi yaḥ kaścit mām sevate atha vā api anuvaṛtate
saḥ janaḥ kaikeyyāḥ putram anvīkṣya na abhibhāṣate
25. Indeed, any person who serves me or follows me, upon seeing Kaikeyī's son, no longer speaks to me.
दश सप्त च वर्षाणि तव जातस्य राघव ।
अतीतानि प्रकाङ्क्षन्त्या मया दुःखपरिक्षयम् ॥२६॥
26. daśa sapta ca varṣāṇi tava jātasya rāghava ,
atītāni prakāṅkṣantyā mayā duḥkhaparikṣayam.
26. daśa sapta ca varṣāṇi tava jātasya rāghava |
atītāni prakāṅkṣantyā mayā duḥkhaparikṣayam
26. rāghava tava jātasya daśa sapta ca varṣāṇi
mayā duḥkhaparikṣayam prakāṅkṣantyā atītāni
26. O Rāghava, seventeen years have passed since your birth, years during which I (the speaker) was longing for the cessation of sorrow.
उपवासैश्च योगैश्च बहुभिश्च परिश्रमैः ।
दुःखं संवर्धितो मोघं त्वं हि दुर्गतया मया ॥२७॥
27. upavāsaiśca yogaiśca bahubhiśca pariśramaiḥ ,
duḥkhaṃ saṃvardhito moghaṃ tvaṃ hi durgatayā mayā.
27. upavāsaiḥ ca yogaiḥ ca bahubhiḥ ca pariśramaiḥ |
duḥkham saṃvardhitaḥ mogham tvam hi durgatayā mayā
27. hi tvam mayā durgatayā upavāsaiḥ ca yogaiḥ ca
bahubhiḥ ca pariśramaiḥ duḥkham mogham saṃvardhitaḥ
27. Indeed, by fasts, spiritual practices (yoga), and many efforts, you were sadly raised in vain by me, an unfortunate woman.
स्थिरं तु हृदयं मन्ये ममेदं यन्न दीर्यते ।
प्रावृषीव महानद्याः स्पृष्टं कूलं नवाम्भसा ॥२८॥
28. sthiraṃ tu hṛdayaṃ manye mamedaṃ yanna dīryate ,
prāvṛṣīva mahānadyāḥ spṛṣṭaṃ kūlaṃ navāmbhasā.
28. sthiram tu hṛdayam manye mama idam yat na dīryate
| prāvṛṣi iva mahānadyāḥ spṛṣṭam kūlam navāmbhasā
28. tu aham idam mama hṛdayam sthiram manye yat na dīryate
prāvṛṣi navāmbhasā spṛṣṭam mahānadyāḥ kūlam iva
28. However, I consider this heart of mine to be steadfast, because it does not break, just like a riverbank touched by fresh water from a great river in the rainy season.
ममैव नूनं मरणं न विद्यते न चावकाशो ऽस्ति यमक्षये मम ।
यदन्तको ऽद्यैव न मां जिहीर्षति प्रसह्य सिंहो रुदतीं मृगीमिव ॥२९॥
29. mamaiva nūnaṃ maraṇaṃ na vidyate na cāvakāśo'sti yamakṣaye mama ,
yadantako'dyaiva na māṃ jihīrṣati prasahya siṃho rudatīṃ mṛgīmiva.
29. mama eva nūnam maraṇam na vidyate na
ca avakāśaḥ asti yama-kṣaye mama
yat antakaḥ adya eva na mām jihīrṣati
prasahya siṃhaḥ rudatīm mṛgīm iva
29. nūnam mama maraṇam eva na vidyate ca mama yama-kṣaye avakāśaḥ na asti.
yat antakaḥ adya eva mām prasahya rudatīm mṛgīm iva siṃhaḥ na jihīrṣati.
29. Certainly, my death does not exist, nor is there a place for me in the realm of Yama (Death). This is because Death (antaka) himself does not forcibly desire to take me even today, just as a lion would [take] a weeping doe.
स्थिरं हि नूनं हृदयं ममायसं न भिद्यते यद्भुवि नावदीर्यते ।
अनेन दुःखेन च देहमर्पितं ध्रुवं ह्यकाले मरणं न विद्यते ॥३०॥
30. sthiraṃ hi nūnaṃ hṛdayaṃ mamāyasaṃ na bhidyate yadbhuvi nāvadīryate ,
anena duḥkhena ca dehamarpitaṃ dhruvaṃ hyakāle maraṇaṃ na vidyate.
30. sthiram hi nūnam hṛdayam mama āyasam
na bhidyate yat bhuvi na avadīryate
anena duḥkhena ca deham arpitam
dhruvam hi akāle maraṇam na vidyate
30. hi nūnam mama āyasam hṛdayam sthiram.
yat na bhidyate bhuvi na avadīryate.
ca anena duḥkhena deham arpitam.
hi dhruvam akāle maraṇam na vidyate.
30. Indeed, my heart must surely be firm and made of iron, for it is not broken nor does it shatter on the ground. And my body is subjected to this sorrow. Truly, untimely death certainly does not exist.
इदं तु दुःखं यदनर्थकानि मे व्रतानि दानानि च संयमाश्च हि ।
तपश्च तप्तं यदपत्यकारणात् सुनिष्फलं बीजमिवोप्तमूषरे ॥३१॥
31. idaṃ tu duḥkhaṃ yadanarthakāni me vratāni dānāni ca saṃyamāśca hi ,
tapaśca taptaṃ yadapatyakāraṇāt suniṣphalaṃ bījamivoptamūṣare.
31. idam tu duḥkham yat anarthakāni me
vratāni dānāni ca saṃyamāḥ ca hi
tapas ca taptam yat apatya-kāraṇāt
suniṣphalam bījam iva uptam ūṣare
31. tu idam duḥkham yat me vratāni dānāni ca saṃyamāḥ hi anarthakāni.
ca yat apatya-kāraṇāt taptam tapas suniṣphalam ūṣare uptam bījam iva.
31. But this is the sorrow: that my vows, charitable gifts (dāna), and self-restraints (saṃyama) have all become meaningless. And the austerity (tapas) that I performed for the sake of offspring has been utterly fruitless, like a seed sown in barren soil.
यदि ह्यकाले मरणं स्वयेच्छया लभेत कश्चिद्गुरु दुःख कर्शितः ।
गताहमद्यैव परेत संसदं विना त्वया धेनुरिवात्मजेन वै ॥३२॥
32. yadi hyakāle maraṇaṃ svayecchayā labheta kaścidguru duḥkha karśitaḥ ,
gatāhamadyaiva pareta saṃsadaṃ vinā tvayā dhenurivātmajena vai.
32. yadi hi akāle maraṇam svā-icchyā
labheta kaścit guru duḥkha-karśitaḥ
gatā aham adya eva pareta-saṃsadam
vinā tvayā dhenuḥ iva ātmajena vai
32. hi yadi kaścit guru duḥkha-karśitaḥ svā-icchyā akāle maraṇam labheta.
aham adya eva tvayā vinā ātmajena dhenuḥ iva pareta-saṃsadam gatā vai.
32. If someone greatly afflicted by sorrow could obtain an untimely death by their own will, then I would indeed go right now to the assembly of the departed (pretas), without you, like a cow separated from her calf.
भृशमसुखममर्षिता तदा बहु विललाप समीक्ष्य राघवम् ।
व्यसनमुपनिशाम्य सा महत् सुतमिव बद्धमवेक्ष्य किंनरी ॥३३॥
33. bhṛśamasukhamamarṣitā tadā bahu vilalāpa samīkṣya rāghavam ,
vyasanamupaniśāmya sā mahat sutamiva baddhamavekṣya kiṃnarī.
33. bhṛśam asukham amarṣitā tadā
bahu vilalāpa samīkṣya rāghavam
vyasanam upaniśāmya sā mahat
sutam iva baddham avekṣya kiṁnarī
33. tadā sā amarṣitā rāghavam samīkṣya
mahat vyasanam upaniśāmya
baddham sutam iva avekṣya bhṛśam
asukham bahu vilalāpa kiṁnarī
33. Then, indignant and overcome with intense sorrow, she lamented profusely upon seeing Rāghava and perceiving the great misfortune. She was like a Kinnarī beholding her son bound.
