Then, having understood his brother's (bhrātuḥ) very auspicious and pleasing command (śāsanam), he quickly went and entered Suyajña's dwelling.
तं विप्रमग्न्यगारस्थं वन्दित्वा लक्ष्मणो ऽब्रवीत् ।
सखे ऽभ्यागच्छ पश्य त्वं वेश्म दुष्करकारिणः ॥२॥

2. taṃ vipramagnyagārasthaṃ vanditvā lakṣmaṇo'bravīt ,

Lakshmana, having saluted that Brahmin who was residing in the fire-sanctuary, spoke: "Friend, come and see the dwelling of the one who performs difficult tasks."
ततः संध्यामुपास्याशु गत्वा सौमित्रिणा सह ।
जुष्टं तत् प्राविशल् लक्ष्म्या रम्यं रामनिवेशनम् ॥३॥

Then, having quickly performed the evening ritual (sandhyā) and having gone with Lakshmana, he entered that delightful dwelling of Rama, which was frequented and adorned with splendor.
तमागतं वेदविदं प्राञ्जलिः सीतया सह ।
सुयज्ञमभिचक्राम राघवो ऽग्निमिवार्चितम् ॥४॥

4. tamāgataṃ vedavidaṃ prāñjaliḥ sītayā saha ,

Rama (rāghava), with folded hands, accompanied by Sita, approached Suyajna, who had arrived and was a knower of the Vedas, and who was revered like a fire.
जातरूपमयैर्मुख्यैरङ्गदैः कुण्डलैः शुभैः ।
सहेम सूत्रैर्मणिभिः केयूरैर्वलयैरपि ॥५॥

(Adorned) with principal golden armlets, beautiful earrings, with gold threads, jewels, arm-bands, and also bracelets.
अन्यैश्च रत्नैर्बहुभिः काकुत्स्थः प्रत्यपूजयत् ।
सुयज्ञं स तदोवाच रामः सीताप्रचोदितः ॥६॥

The descendant of Kakutstha (Rama) also honored Suyajña with many other jewels. Then, prompted by Sita, he (Rama) spoke to him.
हारं च हेमसूत्रं च भार्यायै सौम्य हारय ।
रशनां चाधुना सीता दातुमिच्छति ते सखे ॥७॥

My gentle friend, present this necklace and golden chain to your wife. And now, my friend, Sita also wishes to give a girdle to you.
पर्यङ्कमग्र्यास्तरणं नानारत्नविभूषितम् ।
तमपीच्छति वैदेही प्रतिष्ठापयितुं त्वयि ॥८॥

8. paryaṅkamagryāstaraṇaṃ nānāratnavibhūṣitam ,
tamapīcchati vaidehī pratiṣṭhāpayituṃ tvayi.

Sita (Vaīdehī) also wishes to bestow upon you that couch, which has excellent coverings and is adorned with various jewels.
नागः शत्रुं जयो नाम मातुलो यं ददौ मम ।
तं ते गजसहस्रेण ददामि द्विजपुंगव ॥९॥

9. nāgaḥ śatruṃ jayo nāma mātulo yaṃ dadau mama ,
taṃ te gajasahasreṇa dadāmi dvijapuṃgava.

dvijapuṅgava aham mama mātulaḥ yam śatruñjayaḥ
nāma nāgaḥ dadau tam gajasahasreṇa te dadāmi

9.
O best among Brahmins (dvijapuṅgava), I give you that elephant named Śatruñjaya, which my maternal uncle gave to me, and which is worth a thousand elephants.
इत्युक्तः स हि रामेण सुयज्ञः प्रतिगृह्य तत् ।
रामलक्ष्मणसीतानां प्रयुयोजाशिषः शिवाः ॥१०॥

10. ityuktaḥ sa hi rāmeṇa suyajñaḥ pratigṛhya tat ,
rāmalakṣmaṇasītānāṃ prayuyojāśiṣaḥ śivāḥ.

iti uktaḥ saḥ hi rāmeṇa suyajñaḥ pratigṛhya
tat rāmalakṣmaṇasītānām prayuyoja āśiṣaḥ śivāḥ

saḥ suyajñaḥ rāmeṇa iti uktaḥ tat pratigṛhya
rāmalakṣmaṇasītānām śivāḥ āśiṣaḥ prayuyoja hi

Thus addressed by Rama, Suyajña, having accepted his words, bestowed auspicious blessings upon Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
अथ भ्रातरमव्यग्रं प्रियं रामः प्रियंवदः ।
सौमित्रिं तमुवाचेदं ब्रह्मेव त्रिदशेश्वरम् ॥११॥

Then, Rama, the sweet-speaking one, spoke these words to his beloved, tranquil brother Saumitri (Lakshmana), just as Brahma (brahmā) would address the lord of the gods (Indra).
अगस्त्यं कौशिकं चैव ताव् उभौ ब्राह्मणोत्तमौ ।
अर्चयाहूय सौमित्रे रत्नैः सस्यमिवाम्बुभिः ॥१२॥

12. agastyaṃ kauśikaṃ caiva tāv ubhau brāhmaṇottamau ,

12.
O Saumitri (Lakshmana), having summoned those two eminent Brahmins (brāhmaṇottamau), Agastya and Kauśika, honor them with precious gifts, just as crops are nourished with water.
कौसल्यां च य आशीर्भिर्भक्तः पर्युपतिष्ठति ।
आचार्यस्तैत्तिरीयाणामभिरूपश्च वेदवित् ॥१३॥

13. kausalyāṃ ca ya āśīrbhirbhaktaḥ paryupatiṣṭhati ,
ācāryastaittirīyāṇāmabhirūpaśca vedavit.

ca yaḥ bhaktaḥ āśīrbhiḥ kausalyām paryupatiṣṭhati,

13.
And he who, devoted (bhaktaḥ), attends upon Kausalya with blessings, is the preceptor (ācārya) of the Taittirīya (branch of the Veda), a distinguished scholar, and a knower of the Vedas.
तस्य यानं च दासीश्च सौमित्रे संप्रदापय ।
कौशेयानि च वस्त्राणि यावत्तुष्यति स द्विजः ॥१४॥

O son of Sumitra, arrange for his vehicle, maids, and silken garments to be given until that Brahmin is satisfied.
सूतश्चित्ररथश्चार्यः सचिवः सुचिरोषितः ।
तोषयैनं महार्हैश्च रत्नैर्वस्त्रैर्धनैस्तथा ॥१५॥

15. sūtaścitrarathaścāryaḥ sacivaḥ suciroṣitaḥ ,
toṣayainaṃ mahārhaiśca ratnairvastrairdhanaistathā.

sūtaḥ citrarathaḥ ca āryaḥ sacivaḥ suciroṣitaḥ toṣaya

sūtaḥ citrarathaḥ ca āryaḥ suciroṣitaḥ sacivaḥ toṣaya

enam mahārhaiḥ ratnaiḥ ca vastraiḥ dhanaiḥ tathā
15.
And this charioteer Chitraratha, who is a noble and long-serving minister, satisfy him with very valuable jewels, garments, and wealth.
शालिवाहसहस्रं च द्वे शते भद्रकांस्तथा ।
व्यञ्जनार्थं च सौमित्रे गोसहस्रमुपाकुरु ॥१६॥

16. śālivāhasahasraṃ ca dve śate bhadrakāṃstathā ,
vyañjanārthaṃ ca saumitre gosahasramupākuru.

O son of Sumitra, procure a thousand cartloads of rice, two hundred excellent (bulls or servants), and also a thousand cows for condiments.

17. tataḥ sa puruṣavyāghrastaddhanaṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ svayam ,

Then that tiger among men, Lakṣmaṇa himself, gave that wealth to the chief of Brahmins as commanded, just as Kubera (dhanadaḥ), the giver of wealth, does.
अथाब्रवीद्बाष्पकलांस्तिष्ठतश्चोपजीविनः ।
संप्रदाय बहु द्रव्यमेकैकस्योपजीविनः ॥१८॥

18. athābravīdbāṣpakalāṃstiṣṭhataścopajīvinaḥ ,

atha abrāvīt bāṣpakalān tiṣṭhataḥ ca upajīvinaḥ

bāṣpakalān tiṣṭhataḥ ca upajīvinaḥ abrāvīt

Then, having distributed much wealth to each of his dependents, he spoke to those standing there, who were filled with tears.
लक्ष्मणस्य च यद्वेश्म गृहं च यदिदं मम ।
अशून्यं कार्यमेकैकं यावदागमनं मम ॥१९॥

19. lakṣmaṇasya ca yadveśma gṛhaṃ ca yadidaṃ mama ,
aśūnyaṃ kāryamekaikaṃ yāvadāgamanaṃ mama.

Both Lakshmana's abode and this house of mine must each be kept inhabited until my return.
इत्युक्त्वा दुःखितं सर्वं जनं तमुपजीविनम् ।
उवाचेदं धनध्यक्षं धनमानीयतामिति ।
ततो ऽस्य धनमाजह्रुः सर्वमेवोपजीविनः ॥२०॥

20. ityuktvā duḥkhitaṃ sarvaṃ janaṃ tamupajīvinam ,
uvācedaṃ dhanadhyakṣaṃ dhanamānīyatāmiti ,
tato'sya dhanamājahruḥ sarvamevopajīvinaḥ.
uvācedaṃ dhanadhyakṣaṃ dhanamānīyatāmiti ,
tato'sya dhanamājahruḥ sarvamevopajīvinaḥ.

iti uktvā duḥkhitam sarvam janam tam
upajīvinam uvāca idam dhanādhyakṣam
dhanam ānīyatām iti tataḥ asya
dhanam ājuhruḥ sarvam eva upajīvinaḥ

20.
iti duḥkhitam sarvam tam upajīvinam janam uktvā,
idam dhanādhyakṣam uvāca: "dhanam ānīyatām!" iti.
tataḥ,
asya sarvam eva dhanam upajīvinaḥ ājuhruḥ.
idam dhanādhyakṣam uvāca: "dhanam ānīyatām!" iti.
tataḥ,
asya sarvam eva dhanam upajīvinaḥ ājuhruḥ.
20.
Having thus spoken to all those distressed dependents, he then addressed the treasurer, saying, "Let the wealth be brought!" Thereupon, all the dependents brought all the wealth to him (for distribution).
ततः स पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तद्धनं सहलक्ष्मणः ।
द्विजेभ्यो बालवृद्धेभ्यः कृपणेभ्यो ऽभ्यदापयत् ॥२१॥

Then, that best of men (puruṣavyāghra), accompanied by Lakshmana, caused that wealth to be distributed to the twice-born (dvija), to children and the elderly, and to the poor.
तत्रासीत् पिङ्गलो गार्ग्यस्त्रिजटो नाम वै द्विजः ।
आ पञ्चमायाः कक्ष्याया नैनं कश्चिदवारयत् ॥२२॥

There, indeed, was a Brahmin (dvija) named Pingala Gārgya, also known as Trijata. No one prevented him from entering up to the fifth chamber.
स राजपुत्रमासाद्य त्रिजटो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
निर्धनो बहुपुत्रो ऽस्मि राजपुत्र महायशः ।
उञ्छवृत्तिर्वने नित्यं प्रत्यवेक्षस्व मामिति ॥२३॥
निर्धनो बहुपुत्रो ऽस्मि राजपुत्र महायशः ।
उञ्छवृत्तिर्वने नित्यं प्रत्यवेक्षस्व मामिति ॥२३॥
23. sa rājaputramāsādya trijaṭo vākyamabravīt ,
nirdhano bahuputro'smi rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ ,
uñchavṛttirvane nityaṃ pratyavekṣasva māmiti.

Having approached the prince (rājaputra), Trijata spoke: "O greatly renowned prince (rājaputra), I am poor and have many sons. I constantly subsist by gleaning (uñchavṛtti) in the forest. Therefore, please consider my situation."
तमुवाच ततो रामः परिहाससमन्वितम् ।
गवां सहस्रमप्येकं न तु विश्राणितं मया ।
परिक्षिपसि दण्डेन यावत्तावदवाप्स्यसि ॥२४॥
गवां सहस्रमप्येकं न तु विश्राणितं मया ।
परिक्षिपसि दण्डेन यावत्तावदवाप्स्यसि ॥२४॥
24. tamuvāca tato rāmaḥ parihāsasamanvitam ,
gavāṃ sahasramapyekaṃ na tu viśrāṇitaṃ mayā ,
parikṣipasi daṇḍena yāvattāvadavāpsyasi.

Then Rama spoke to him playfully, "I have not even bestowed a single thousand cows (meaning, 'I have nothing to give like that right now'). However, as far as you can mark out with your staff, that much you shall obtain."
स शाटीं त्वरितः कट्यां संभ्रान्तः परिवेष्ट्य ताम् ।
आविध्य दण्डं चिक्षेप सर्वप्राणेन वेगितः ॥२५॥

25. sa śāṭīṃ tvaritaḥ kaṭyāṃ saṃbhrāntaḥ pariveṣṭya tām ,

He, agitated and quickened, wrapped that cloth around his waist, then swung the staff and threw it with all his might.
उवाच च ततो रामस्तं गार्ग्यमभिसान्त्वयन् ।
मन्युर्न खलु कर्तव्यः परिहासो ह्ययं मम ॥२६॥

Then Rāma, comforting that Gārgya, spoke, "Anger should certainly not be harbored; this was indeed my jest."
ततः सभार्यस्त्रिजटो महामुनिर्गवामनीकं प्रतिगृह्य मोदितः ।
यशोबलप्रीतिसुखोपबृंहिणीस्तदाशिषः प्रत्यवदन्महात्मनः ॥२७॥

27. tataḥ sabhāryastrijaṭo mahāmunirgavāmanīkaṃ pratigṛhya moditaḥ ,

27.
Then, the great sage Trijata, accompanied by his wife, having received the multitude of cows, was delighted. He then spoke blessings, which enhanced fame, strength, affection, and happiness, for the great-souled one (mahātman).
