तया महत्या यायिन्या ध्वजिन्या वनवासिनः ।

1. Tormented by that vast, advancing army with its standards, the intoxicated (or 'rutting') leaders of the forest-dwelling herds (animals), along with their groups, scattered in all directions.
ऋक्षाः पृषतसंघाश्च रुरवश्च समन्ततः ।
दृश्यन्ते वनराजीषु गिरिष्वपि नदीषु च ॥२॥
2. ṛkṣāḥ pṛṣatasaṃghāśca ruravaśca samantataḥ ,
dṛśyante vanarājīṣu giriṣvapi nadīṣu ca.

2. Bears, herds of spotted deer, and antelopes are seen everywhere, in the forest ranges, on the mountains, and even in the rivers.
स संप्रतस्थे धर्मात्मा प्रीतो दशरथात्मजः ।
वृतो महत्या नादिन्या सेनया चतुरङ्गया ॥३॥
3. sa saṃpratasthe dharmātmā prīto daśarathātmajaḥ ,
vṛto mahatyā nādinyā senayā caturaṅgayā.

3. The righteous-souled (dharma) son of Daśaratha, pleased, set out, surrounded by a vast, noisy, four-limbed army.
सागरौघनिभा सेना भरतस्य महात्मनः ।
महीं संछादयामास प्रावृषि द्यामिवाम्बुदः ॥४॥
4. sāgaraughanibhā senā bharatasya mahātmanaḥ ,
mahīṃ saṃchādayāmāsa prāvṛṣi dyāmivāmbudaḥ.

4. Bharata's army, which resembled a surging ocean current, covered the earth, just as a cloud covers the sky during the rainy season.
तुरंगौघैरवतता वारणैश्च महाजवैः ।
अनालक्ष्या चिरं कालं तस्मिन् काले बभूव भूः ॥५॥
5. turaṃgaughairavatatā vāraṇaiśca mahājavaiḥ ,
anālakṣyā ciraṃ kālaṃ tasmin kāle babhūva bhūḥ.
5. turaṅgaughaiḥ avatatā vāraṇaiḥ ca mahājavaiḥ
anālakṣyā ciram kālam tasmin kāle babhūva bhūḥ

5. Covered by vast numbers of horses and swift elephants, the earth became invisible for a long time during that period.
स यात्वा दूरमध्वानं सुपरिश्रान्त वाहनः ।
उवाच भरतः श्रीमान् वसिष्ठं मन्त्रिणां वरम् ॥६॥
6. sa yātvā dūramadhvānaṃ supariśrānta vāhanaḥ ,
uvāca bharataḥ śrīmān vasiṣṭhaṃ mantriṇāṃ varam.
6. sa yātvā dūram adhvānam supariśrānta vāhanaḥ
uvāca bharataḥ śrīmān vasiṣṭham mantriṇām varam
6. supariśrāntavāhanaḥ śrīmān saḥ bharataḥ dūram

6. Having travelled a long distance, the glorious Bharata, whose mounts were extremely weary, spoke to Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among counselors.
यादृशं लक्ष्यते रूपं यथा चैव श्रुतं मया ।
व्यक्तं प्राप्ताः स्म तं देशं भरद्वाजो यमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. yādṛśaṃ lakṣyate rūpaṃ yathā caiva śrutaṃ mayā ,
vyaktaṃ prāptāḥ sma taṃ deśaṃ bharadvājo yamabravīt.
7. yādṛśam lakṣyate rūpam yathā ca eva śrutam mayā
vyaktam prāptāḥ sma tam deśam bharadvājaḥ yam abravīt
7. rūpam yādṛśam lakṣyate,
yathā ca eva mayā śrutam (asti),
(tena) vyaktam (vayam) tam deśam prāptāḥ sma,
yam bharadvājaḥ abravīt
7. The appearance is just as it was described and heard by me; clearly, we have reached that very region which Bharadvāja spoke of.
अयं गिरिश्चित्रकूटस्तथा मन्दाकिनी नदी ।
एतत् प्रकाशते दूरान्नीलमेघनिभं वनम् ॥८॥
8. ayaṃ giriścitrakūṭastathā mandākinī nadī ,
etat prakāśate dūrānnīlameghanibhaṃ vanam.
8. ayam giriḥ citrakūṭaḥ tathā mandākinī nadī
etat prakāśate dūrāt nīlameghanibham vanam

8. This is the Citrakūṭa mountain, and there is the Mandākinī river. This forest, resembling a dark cloud, shines from a distance.
गिरेः सानूनि रम्याणि चित्रकूटस्य संप्रति ।
वारणैरवमृद्यन्ते मामकैः पर्वतोपमैः ॥९॥
9. gireḥ sānūni ramyāṇi citrakūṭasya saṃprati ,
vāraṇairavamṛdyante māmakaiḥ parvatopamaiḥ.

vāraṇaiḥ avamṛdyante māmakaiḥ parvatopamaiḥ

9. Now, the beautiful peaks of Citrakūṭa mountain are being crushed by my elephants, which are like mountains.
मुञ्चन्ति कुसुमान्येते नगाः पर्वतसानुषु ।
नीला इवातपापाये तोयं तोयधरा घनाः ॥१०॥
10. muñcanti kusumānyete nagāḥ parvatasānuṣu ,
nīlā ivātapāpāye toyaṃ toyadharā ghanāḥ.
10. muñcanti kusumāni ete nagāḥ parvatasānuṣu
nīlāḥ iva atapāpāye toyam toyadharāḥ ghanāḥ
10. ete nagāḥ parvatasānuṣu kusumāni muñcanti atapāpāye

10. These trees on the mountain peaks drop their flowers, just as dense, dark clouds release water at the end of the hot season.
किन्नराचरितोद्देशं पश्य शत्रुघ्न पर्वतम् ।
हयैः समन्तादाकीर्णं मकरैरिव सागरम् ॥११॥
11. kinnarācaritoddeśaṃ paśya śatrughna parvatam ,
hayaiḥ samantādākīrṇaṃ makarairiva sāgaram.

hayaiḥ samantāt ākīrṇam makaraiḥ iva sāgaram
11. śatrughna kinnarācaritoddeśam parvatam paśya hayaiḥ samantāt ākīrṇam (parvatam),

11. O Śatrughna, behold this mountain, where Kinnaras roam. It is filled on all sides with horses, just as the ocean is filled with sea-monsters.
एते मृगगणा भान्ति शीघ्रवेगाः प्रचोदिताः ।
वायुप्रविद्धाः शरदि मेघराज्य इवाम्बरे ॥१२॥
12. ete mṛgagaṇā bhānti śīghravegāḥ pracoditāḥ ,
vāyupraviddhāḥ śaradi megharājya ivāmbare.
12. ete mṛgagaṇāḥ bhānti śīghravegāḥ pracoditāḥ
vāyupraviddhāḥ śaradi megharājye iva ambare
12. ete śīghravegāḥ pracoditāḥ vāyupraviddhāḥ

12. These swift-moving herds of deer, impelled and driven by the wind, appear in the sky like rows of clouds in autumn.
कुर्वन्ति कुसुमापीडाञ् शिरःसु सुरभीनमी ।
मेघप्रकाशैः फलकैर्दाक्षिणात्या यथा नराः ॥१३॥
13. kurvanti kusumāpīḍāñ śiraḥsu surabhīnamī ,
meghaprakāśaiḥ phalakairdākṣiṇātyā yathā narāḥ.
13. kurvanti kusumāpīḍān śiraḥsu surabhīn amī
meghaprakāśaiḥ phalakaiḥ dākṣiṇātyāḥ yathā narāḥ
13. amī dākṣiṇātyāḥ narāḥ yathā meghaprakāśaiḥ
phalakaiḥ śiraḥsu surabhīn kusumāpīḍān kurvanti
13. These Southern men, just like they (adorn themselves) with cloud-shining panels, adorn their heads with fragrant flower-chaplets.
निष्कूजमिव भूत्वेदं वनं घोरप्रदर्शनम् ।
अयोध्येव जनाकीर्णा संप्रति प्रतिभाति मा ॥१४॥
14. niṣkūjamiva bhūtvedaṃ vanaṃ ghorapradarśanam ,
ayodhyeva janākīrṇā saṃprati pratibhāti mā.
14. niṣkūjam iva bhūtvā idam vanam ghorapradarśanam
ayodhyā iva janākīrṇā saṃprati pratibhāti mā
14. idam vanam niṣkūjam iva bhūtvā ghorapradarśanam
saṃprati janākīrṇā ayodhyā iva mā pratibhāti
14. This forest, which had become silent and fearsome to behold, now appears to me as if it were Ayodhyā, bustling with people.
खुरैरुदीरितो रेणुर्दिवं प्रच्छाद्य तिष्ठति ।
तं वहत्यनिलः शीघ्रं कुर्वन्निव मम प्रियम् ॥१५॥
15. khurairudīrito reṇurdivaṃ pracchādya tiṣṭhati ,
taṃ vahatyanilaḥ śīghraṃ kurvanniva mama priyam.
15. khuraiḥ udīritaḥ reṇuḥ divam pracchādya tiṣṭhati
tam vahati anilaḥ śīghram kurvan iva mama priyam
15. khuraiḥ udīritaḥ reṇuḥ divam pracchādya tiṣṭhati
anilaḥ tam śīghram mama priyam kurvan iva vahati
15. The dust, stirred up by the hooves, hangs covering the sky. The wind swiftly carries it away, as if doing me a favor.
स्यन्दनांस्तुरगोपेतान् सूतमुख्यैरधिष्ठितान् ।
एतान् संपततः शीघ्रं पश्य शत्रुघ्न कानने ॥१६॥
16. syandanāṃsturagopetān sūtamukhyairadhiṣṭhitān ,
etān saṃpatataḥ śīghraṃ paśya śatrughna kānane.
16. syandanān turagopetān sūtamukhyaiḥ adhiṣṭhitān
etān saṃpatataḥ śīghram paśya śatrughna kānane
16. śatrughna etān turagopetān sūtamukhyaiḥ adhiṣṭhitān
śīghram saṃpatataḥ syandanān kānane paśya
16. O Shatrughna, behold these chariots, endowed with horses and driven by chief charioteers, as they swiftly rush through the forest.
एतान् वित्रासितान्पश्य बर्हिणः प्रियदर्शनान् ।
एतमाविशतः शैलमधिवासं पतत्रिणाम् ॥१७॥
17. etān vitrāsitānpaśya barhiṇaḥ priyadarśanān ,
etamāviśataḥ śailamadhivāsaṃ patatriṇām.
17. etān vitrāsitān paśya barhiṇaḥ priyadarśanān
etam āviśataḥ śailam adhivāsam patatriṇām
17. etān vitrāsitān priyadarśanān barhiṇaḥ
patatriṇām adhivāsam etam śailam āviśataḥ paśya
17. Behold these frightened, beautiful peacocks, entering this mountain, which is the dwelling place of birds.
अतिमात्रमयं देशो मनोज्ञः प्रतिभाति मा ।
तापसानां निवासो ऽयं व्यक्तं स्वर्गपथो यथा ॥१८॥
18. atimātramayaṃ deśo manojñaḥ pratibhāti mā ,
tāpasānāṃ nivāso'yaṃ vyaktaṃ svargapatho yathā.
18. atimātram ayam deśaḥ manojñaḥ pratibhāti mā
tāpasānām nivāsaḥ ayam vyaktam svargapathaḥ yathā
18. ayam deśaḥ mā atimātram manojñaḥ pratibhāti.
ayam tāpasānām nivāsaḥ vyaktam svargapathaḥ yathā
18. This region appears exceedingly beautiful to me. This dwelling place of ascetics is clearly like a path to heaven.
मृगा मृगीभिः सहिता बहवः पृषता वने ।
मनोज्ञ रूपा लक्ष्यन्ते कुसुमैरिव चित्रितः ॥१९॥
19. mṛgā mṛgībhiḥ sahitā bahavaḥ pṛṣatā vane ,
manojña rūpā lakṣyante kusumairiva citritaḥ.
19. mṛgāḥ mṛgībhiḥ sahitāḥ bahavaḥ pṛṣatāḥ vane
manojñarūpāḥ lakṣyante kusumaiḥ iva citritāḥ
19. vane mṛgībhiḥ sahitāḥ bahavaḥ pṛṣatāḥ mṛgāḥ
manojñarūpāḥ kusumaiḥ iva citritāḥ lakṣyante
19. Many spotted deer, accompanied by female deer, with beautiful forms, are seen in the forest, as if adorned with flowers.
साधु सैन्याः प्रतिष्ठन्तां विचिन्वन्तु च काननम् ।
यथा तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ दृश्येते रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥२०॥
20. sādhu sainyāḥ pratiṣṭhantāṃ vicinvantu ca kānanam ,
yathā tau puruṣavyāghrau dṛśyete rāmalakṣmaṇau.
20. sādhu sainyāḥ pratiṣṭhantām vicinvantu ca kānanam
yathā tau puruṣavyāghrau dṛśyete rāmalakṣmaṇau
20. sainyāḥ sādhu pratiṣṭhantām ca kānanam vicinvantu

20. Indeed, let the soldiers advance and search the forest, so that those two best among men, Rama and Lakshmana, may be seen.
भरतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पुरुषाः शस्त्रपाणयः ।
विविशुस्तद्वनं शूरा धूमं च ददृशुस्ततः ॥२१॥
21. bharatasya vacaḥ śrutvā puruṣāḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ ,
viviśustadvanaṃ śūrā dhūmaṃ ca dadṛśustataḥ.
21. bharatasya vacaḥ śrutvā puruṣāḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ
viviśuḥ tat vanam śūrāḥ dhūmam ca dadṛśuḥ tataḥ

21. After hearing Bharata's words, the brave men, armed with weapons, entered that forest and then saw smoke.
ते समालोक्य धूमाग्रमूचुर्भरतमागताः ।
नामनुष्ये भवत्यग्निर्व्यक्तमत्रैव राघवौ ॥२२॥
22. te samālokya dhūmāgramūcurbharatamāgatāḥ ,
nāmanuṣye bhavatyagnirvyaktamatraiva rāghavau.
22. te samālokya dhūmāgram ūcuḥ bharatam āgatāḥ na
amanuṣye bhavati agniḥ vyaktam atra eva rāghavau
22. āgatāḥ te dhūmāgram samālokya bharatam ūcuḥ
amanuṣye agniḥ na bhavati vyaktam rāghavau atra eva
22. Having approached Bharata, and clearly seeing the top of the smoke, they said: 'Fire does not exist where there are no humans; clearly, the two Raghava (Rama and Lakshmana) are right here.'
अथ नात्र नरव्याघ्रौ राजपुत्रौ परंतपौ ।
अन्ये रामोपमाः सन्ति व्यक्तमत्र तपस्विनः ॥२३॥
23. atha nātra naravyāghrau rājaputrau paraṃtapau ,
anye rāmopamāḥ santi vyaktamatra tapasvinaḥ.
23. atha na atra naravyāghrau rājaputrau paraṃtapau
anye rāmopamāḥ santi vyaktam atra tapasvinaḥ
23. atha atra naravyāghrau rājaputrau paraṃtapau na
vyaktam atra anye rāmopamāḥ tapasvinaḥ santi
23. But if the two best among men, the princes, the tormentors of foes (Rama and Lakshmana), are not present here, then clearly other ascetics, similar to Rama, are present here.
तच्छ्रुत्वा भरतस्तेषां वचनं साधु संमतम् ।
सैन्यानुवाच सर्वांस्तानमित्रबलमर्दनः ॥२४॥
24. tacchrutvā bharatasteṣāṃ vacanaṃ sādhu saṃmatam ,
sainyānuvāca sarvāṃstānamitrabalamardanaḥ.
24. tat śrutvā bharataḥ teṣām vacanam sādhu saṃmatam
sainyān uvāca sarvān tān amitrabalmardanaḥ
24. amitrabalmardanaḥ bharataḥ teṣām sādhu saṃmatam
vacanam tat śrutvā sarvān tān sainyān uvāca
24. Having heard their good and approved words, Bharata, the destroyer of enemy forces, addressed all those soldiers.
यत्ता भवन्तस्तिष्ठन्तु नेतो गन्तव्यमग्रतः ।
अहमेव गमिष्यामि सुमन्त्रो गुरुरेव च ॥२५॥
25. yattā bhavantastiṣṭhantu neto gantavyamagrataḥ ,
ahameva gamiṣyāmi sumantro gurureva ca.
25. yattāḥ bhavantaḥ tiṣṭhantu na itaḥ gantavyam
agrataḥ aham eva gamiṣyāmi sumantraḥ guruḥ eva ca
25. bhavantaḥ yattāḥ tiṣṭhantu na itaḥ agrataḥ gantavyam.
aham eva gamiṣyāmi sumantraḥ guruḥ eva ca
25. You yourselves stay ready; one must not proceed from here. I myself will go, along with Sumantra and the preceptor (guru).
एवमुक्तास्ततः सर्वे तत्र तस्थुः समन्ततः ।
भरतो यत्र धूमाग्रं तत्र दृष्टिं समादधत् ॥२६॥
26. evamuktāstataḥ sarve tatra tasthuḥ samantataḥ ,
bharato yatra dhūmāgraṃ tatra dṛṣṭiṃ samādadhat.
26. evam uktāḥ tataḥ sarve tatra tasthuḥ samantataḥ
bharataḥ yatra dhūma agram tatra dṛṣṭim samādadhat
26. evam uktāḥ sarve tataḥ samantataḥ tatra tasthuḥ.
bharataḥ yatra dhūma agram tatra dṛṣṭim samādadhat
26. Having been addressed thus, all of them then stood still all around. Bharata, meanwhile, fixed his gaze there, where the forefront of the smoke was visible.
व्यवस्थिता या भरतेन सा चमूर्निरीक्षमाणापि च धूममग्रतः ।
बभूव हृष्टा नचिरेण जानती प्रियस्य रामस्य समागमं तदा ॥२७॥
27. vyavasthitā yā bharatena sā camūrnirīkṣamāṇāpi ca dhūmamagrataḥ ,
babhūva hṛṣṭā nacireṇa jānatī priyasya rāmasya samāgamaṃ tadā.
27. vyavasthitā yā bharatena sā camūḥ
nirīkṣamāṇā api ca dhūmam agrataḥ
babhūva hṛṣṭā na cireṇa jānantī
priyasya rāmasya samāgamam tadā
27. bharatena व्यवस्थिता या sā camūḥ अग्रतः dhūmam nirīkṣamāṇā api ca,
na cireṇa priyasya rāmasya samāgamam jānantī tadā hṛṣṭā babhūva
27. That army, which had been positioned by Bharata, observing the smoke ahead, soon became joyful, realizing at that moment the imminent reunion with their dear Rama.
