मारीचेन तु तद्वाक्यं क्षमं युक्तं च रावणः ।
उक्तो न प्रतिजग्राह मर्तुकाम इवौषधम् ॥१॥
1. mārīcena tu tadvākyaṃ kṣamaṃ yuktaṃ ca rāvaṇaḥ ,
ukto na pratijagrāha martukāma ivauṣadham.

1. But Rāvaṇa, although addressed by Mārīca with that suitable and proper advice, did not accept it, just as one who desires to die would not accept medicine.
तं पथ्यहितवक्तारं मारीचं राक्षसाधिपः ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यमयुक्तं कालचोदितः ॥२॥
2. taṃ pathyahitavaktāraṃ mārīcaṃ rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyamayuktaṃ kālacoditaḥ.
2. tam pathyahitavaktāram mārīcam rākṣasādhipaḥ
abravīt paruṣam vākyam ayuktam kālacoditaḥ
2. kālacoditaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ pathyahitavaktāram

2. Impelled by fate, the lord of Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) spoke harsh and improper words to that Mārīca, who was speaking beneficial and salutary advice.
यत् किलैतदयुक्तार्थं मारीच मयि कथ्यते ।
वाक्यं निष्फलमत्यर्थं बीजमुप्तमिवोषरे ॥३॥
3. yat kilaitadayuktārthaṃ mārīca mayi kathyate ,
vākyaṃ niṣphalamatyarthaṃ bījamuptamivoṣare.
3. yat kila etat ayuktārtham mārīca mayi kathyate
vākyam niṣphalam atyartham bījam uptam iva ūṣare
3. mārīca yat etat ayuktārtham vākyam mayi kathyate
atyartham niṣphalam ūṣare uptam bījam iva
3. O Maricha, this meaningless counsel that is being given to me is utterly fruitless, like a seed sown in barren soil.
त्वद्वाक्यैर्न तु मां शक्यं भेत्तुं रामस्य संयुगे ।
पापशीलस्य मूर्खस्य मानुषस्य विशेषतः ॥४॥
4. tvadvākyairna tu māṃ śakyaṃ bhettuṃ rāmasya saṃyuge ,
pāpaśīlasya mūrkhasya mānuṣasya viśeṣataḥ.
4. tvat vākyaiḥ na tu mām śakyam bhettum rāmasya
saṃyuge pāpaśīlasya mūrkhasya mānuṣasya viśeṣataḥ
4. tu na śakyam mām tvat vākyaiḥ rāmasya pāpaśīlasya
mūrkhasya mānuṣasya viśeṣataḥ saṃyuge bhettum
4. Indeed, it is not possible that I be defeated in battle by Rāma - that sinful, foolish, and especially merely human individual - through your words.
यस्त्यक्त्वा सुहृदो राज्यं मातरं पितरं तथा ।
स्त्रीवाक्यं प्राकृतं श्रुत्वा वनमेकपदे गतः ॥५॥
5. yastyaktvā suhṛdo rājyaṃ mātaraṃ pitaraṃ tathā ,
strīvākyaṃ prākṛtaṃ śrutvā vanamekapade gataḥ.
5. yaḥ tyaktvā suhṛdaḥ rājyam mātaram pitaram tathā
strīvākyam prākṛtam śrutvā vanam ekapade gataḥ
5. yaḥ suhṛdaḥ rājyam mātaram pitaram tathā tyaktvā
prākṛtam strīvākyam śrutvā ekapade vanam gataḥ
5. He who abandoned his friends, kingdom, mother, and father, and hearing the common words of a woman, immediately went to the forest.
अवश्यं तु मया तस्य संयुगे खरघातिनः ।
प्राणैः प्रियतरा सीता हर्तव्या तव संनिधौ ॥६॥
6. avaśyaṃ tu mayā tasya saṃyuge kharaghātinaḥ ,
prāṇaiḥ priyatarā sītā hartavyā tava saṃnidhau.
6. avaśyam tu mayā tasya saṃyuge kharaghātinaḥ
prāṇaiḥ priyatarā sītā hartavyā tava saṃnidhau
6. tu avaśyam mayā tava saṃnidhau saṃyuge tasya
kharaghātinaḥ prāṇaiḥ priyatarā sītā hartavyā
6. However, in your presence, I must certainly abduct Sītā, who is dearer to him than his own life, from that killer of Khara in battle.
एवं मे निश्चिता बुद्धिर्हृदि मारीच वर्तते ।
न व्यावर्तयितुं शक्या सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥७॥
7. evaṃ me niścitā buddhirhṛdi mārīca vartate ,
na vyāvartayituṃ śakyā sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ.
7. evam me niścitā buddhiḥ hṛdi mārīca vartate na
vyāvartayitum śakyā sa-indraiḥ api sura-asuraiḥ
7. mārīca evam me niścitā buddhiḥ hṛdi vartate sā
sa-indraiḥ api sura-asuraiḥ na vyāvartayitum śakyā
7. O Maricha, this firm resolve is fixed in my heart. It cannot be altered even by the gods and demons, led by Indra.
दोषं गुणं वा संपृष्टस्त्वमेवं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
अपायं वाप्युपायं वा कार्यस्यास्य विनिश्चये ॥८॥
8. doṣaṃ guṇaṃ vā saṃpṛṣṭastvamevaṃ vaktumarhasi ,
apāyaṃ vāpyupāyaṃ vā kāryasyāsya viniścaye.
8. doṣam guṇam vā sampṛṣṭaḥ tvam evam vaktum arhasi
apāyam vā api upāyam vā kāryasya asya viniścaye
8. sampṛṣṭaḥ tvam asya kāryasya viniścaye doṣam
vā guṇam vā apāyam vā api upāyam vaktum arhasi
8. When questioned regarding the decision concerning this matter, you (Maricha) should thus state its defects or merits, or its disadvantages or advantages.
संपृष्टेन तु वक्तव्यं सचिवेन विपश्चिता ।
उद्यताञ्जलिना राज्ञो य इच्छेद्भूतिमात्मनः ॥९॥
9. saṃpṛṣṭena tu vaktavyaṃ sacivena vipaścitā ,
udyatāñjalinā rājño ya icchedbhūtimātmanaḥ.
9. sampṛṣṭena tu vaktavyam sacivena vipaścitā
udyata-añjalinā rājñaḥ yaḥ icchet bhūtim ātmanaḥ
9. yaḥ sacivena vipaścitā ātmanaḥ bhūtim icchet tena
sampṛṣṭena tu udyata-añjalinā rājñaḥ vaktavyam
9. Indeed, a wise minister who desires his own prosperity (bhūti) should, when questioned, speak to the king with joined palms.
वाक्यमप्रतिकूलं तु मृदुपूर्वं शुभं हितम् ।
उपचारेण युक्तं च वक्तव्यो वसुधाधिपः ॥१०॥
10. vākyamapratikūlaṃ tu mṛdupūrvaṃ śubhaṃ hitam ,
upacāreṇa yuktaṃ ca vaktavyo vasudhādhipaḥ.
10. vākyam apratikūlam tu mṛdu-pūrvam śubham hitam
upacāreṇa yuktam ca vaktavyaḥ vasudhā-adhipaḥ
10. tu apratikūlam mṛdu-pūrvam śubham hitam upacāreṇa
yuktam ca vākyam vasudhā-adhipaḥ vaktavyaḥ
10. Indeed, the king (vasudhādhipa) should be addressed with words that are agreeable, gentle in tone, auspicious, beneficial, and coupled with proper courtesy.
सावमर्दं तु यद्वाक्यं मारीच हितमुच्यते ।
नाभिनन्दति तद् राजा मानार्हो मानवर्जितम् ॥११॥
11. sāvamardaṃ tu yadvākyaṃ mārīca hitamucyate ,
nābhinandati tad rājā mānārho mānavarjitam.
11. sāvamardam tu yat vākyam mārīca hitam ucyate
na abhinandati tat rājā mānārhaḥ mānavarjitam
11. mārīca mānārhaḥ rājā yat sāvamardam mānavarjitam
hitam vākyam ucyate tat na abhinandati tu
11. O Maricha, a king who is deserving of respect does not welcome advice, even if it is beneficial, if it is uttered contemptuously and without proper deference.
पञ्चरूपाणि राजानो धारयन्त्यमितौजसः ।
अग्नेरिन्द्रस्य सोमस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य च ।
औष्ण्यं तथा विक्रमं च सौम्यं दण्डं प्रसन्नताम् ॥१२॥
12. pañcarūpāṇi rājāno dhārayantyamitaujasaḥ ,
agnerindrasya somasya yamasya varuṇasya ca ,
auṣṇyaṃ tathā vikramaṃ ca saumyaṃ daṇḍaṃ prasannatām.
12. pañca rūpāṇi rājānaḥ dhārayanti
amitojasaḥ agneḥ indrasya somasya
yamasya varuṇasya ca auṣṇyam tathā
vikramam ca saumyam daṇḍam prasannatām
12. amitojasaḥ rājānaḥ pañca rūpāṇi dhārayanti: agneḥ auṣṇyam,
indrasya vikramam,
somasya saumyam,
yamasya daṇḍam,
varuṇasya ca prasannatām.
12. Kings of immense power embody five forms or aspects, drawing from the deities Agni, Indra, Soma, Yama, and Varuna. These aspects are fierceness, also valor, gentleness, punitive authority, and graciousness.
तस्मात् सर्वास्ववस्थासु मान्याः पूज्याश्च पार्थिवाः ।
त्वं तु धर्ममविज्ञाय केवलं मोहमास्थितः ॥१३॥
13. tasmāt sarvāsvavasthāsu mānyāḥ pūjyāśca pārthivāḥ ,
tvaṃ tu dharmamavijñāya kevalaṃ mohamāsthitaḥ.
13. tasmāt sarvāsu avasthāsu mānyāḥ pūjyāḥ ca pārthivāḥ
tvam tu dharmam avijñāya kevalam moham āsthitaḥ
13. tasmāt pārthivāḥ sarvāsu avasthāsu mānyāḥ ca pūjyāḥ.
tu tvam dharmam avijñāya kevalam moham āsthitaḥ.
13. Therefore, kings are to be honored and revered in all circumstances. But you, by not understanding the natural law (dharma), have merely succumbed to delusion.
अभ्यागतं मां दौरात्म्यात् परुषं वदसीदृशम् ।
गुणदोषौ न पृच्छामि क्षमं चात्मनि राक्षस ।
अस्मिंस्तु स भवान् कृत्ये साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हति ॥१४॥
14. abhyāgataṃ māṃ daurātmyāt paruṣaṃ vadasīdṛśam ,
guṇadoṣau na pṛcchāmi kṣamaṃ cātmani rākṣasa ,
asmiṃstu sa bhavān kṛtye sāhāyyaṃ kartumarhati.
14. abhyāgatam mām daurātmyāt paruṣam
vadasi īdṛśam guṇadoṣau na pṛcchāmi
kṣamam ca ātmani rākṣasa asmin tu
saḥ bhavān kṛtye sāhāyyam kartum arhati
14. dourātmyāt tvam abhyāgatam mām īdṛśam paruṣam vadasi.
rākṣasa,
guṇadoṣau ca ātmani kṣamam na pṛcchāmi.
tu asmin kṛtye saḥ bhavān sāhāyyam kartum arhati.
14. Out of your wicked nature, you speak such harsh words to me, your guest. O Rākṣasa, I am not asking about right or wrong, nor what is proper for you personally. Rather, your honor ought to provide assistance in this particular task.
सौवर्णस्त्वं मृगो भूत्वा चित्रो रजतबिन्दुभिः ।
प्रलोभयित्वा वैदेहीं यथेष्टं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. sauvarṇastvaṃ mṛgo bhūtvā citro rajatabindubhiḥ ,
pralobhayitvā vaidehīṃ yatheṣṭaṃ gantumarhasi.
15. sauvarṇaḥ tvam mṛgaḥ bhūtvā citraḥ rajatabindubhiḥ
pralobhayitvā vaidehīm yatheṣṭam gantum arhasi
15. tvam sauvarṇaḥ rajatabindubhiḥ citraḥ mṛgaḥ bhūtvā
vaidehīm pralobhayitvā yatheṣṭam gantum arhasi
15. You, having become a golden deer variegated with silver spots, should entice Vaidehi (Sita) and then go wherever you wish.
त्वां तु मायामृगं दृष्ट्वा काञ्चनं जातविस्मया ।
आनयैनमिति क्षिप्रं रामं वक्ष्यति मैथिली ॥१६॥
16. tvāṃ tu māyāmṛgaṃ dṛṣṭvā kāñcanaṃ jātavismayā ,
ānayainamiti kṣipraṃ rāmaṃ vakṣyati maithilī.
16. tvām tu māyāmṛgam dṛṣṭvā kāñcanam jātavismayā
ānaya enam iti kṣipram rāmam vakṣyati maithilī
16. maithilī tu kāñcanam māyāmṛgam tvām dṛṣṭvā jātavismayā
sati kṣipram rāmam "enam ānaya" iti vakṣyati
16. Having seen you, a golden magical deer, Maithili (Sita), struck with wonder, will quickly say to Rama, "Bring him!"
अपक्रान्ते च काकुत्स्थे लक्ष्मणे च यथासुखम् ।
आनयिष्यामि वैदेहीं सहस्राक्षः शचीमिव ॥१७॥
17. apakrānte ca kākutsthe lakṣmaṇe ca yathāsukham ,
ānayiṣyāmi vaidehīṃ sahasrākṣaḥ śacīmiva.
17. apakrānte ca kākutsthe lakṣmaṇe ca yathāsukham
ānayiṣyāmi vaidehīm sahasrākṣaḥ śacīm iva
17. ca kākutsthe ca lakṣmaṇe yathāsukham apakrānte sati
sahasrākṣaḥ śacīm iva aham vaidehīm ānayiṣyāmi
17. And when Kakutstha (Rama) and Lakshmana have comfortably departed, I will bring Vaidehi (Sita) just as Indra (sahasrākṣaḥ) brought Sachi.
एवं कृत्वा त्विदं कार्यं यथेष्टं गच्छ राक्षस ।
राज्यस्यार्धं प्रदास्यामि मारीच तव सुव्रत ॥१८॥
18. evaṃ kṛtvā tvidaṃ kāryaṃ yatheṣṭaṃ gaccha rākṣasa ,
rājyasyārdhaṃ pradāsyāmi mārīca tava suvrata.
18. evam kṛtvā tu idam kāryam yatheṣṭam gaccha rākṣasa
rājyasya ardham pradāsyāmi marīca tava suvratā
18. rākṣasa! marīca! suvratā! tvam evam idam kāryam kṛtvā yatheṣṭam gaccha.
tava rājyasya ardham pradāsyāmi.
18. Having accomplished this task in this manner, go wherever you wish, O demon! O Maricha, I will give you half of my kingdom, O one of good vows!
गच्छ सौम्य शिवं मार्गं कार्यस्यास्य विवृद्धये ।
प्राप्य सीतामयुद्धेन वञ्चयित्वा तु राघवम् ।
लङ्कां प्रति गमिष्यामि कृतकार्यः सह त्वया ॥१९॥
19. gaccha saumya śivaṃ mārgaṃ kāryasyāsya vivṛddhaye ,
prāpya sītāmayuddhena vañcayitvā tu rāghavam ,
laṅkāṃ prati gamiṣyāmi kṛtakāryaḥ saha tvayā.
19. gaccha saumya śivam mārgam kāryasya
asya vivṛddhaye prāpya sītām ayuddhena
vañcayitvā tu rāghavam laṅkām
prati gamiṣyāmi kṛtakāryaḥ saha tvayā
19. saumya asya kāryasya vivṛddhaye śivam
mārgam gaccha ayuddhena sītām
prāpya rāghavam tu vañcayitvā tvayā
saha kṛtakāryaḥ laṅkām prati gamiṣyāmi
19. Go, gentle one, on an auspicious path for the advancement of this task. Having obtained Sita without a battle, and having deceived Rama, I will return to Lanka, my work accomplished, along with you.
एतत् कार्यमवश्यं मे बलादपि करिष्यसि ।
राज्ञो हि प्रतिकूलस्थो न जातु सुखमेधते ॥२०॥
20. etat kāryamavaśyaṃ me balādapi kariṣyasi ,
rājño hi pratikūlastho na jātu sukhamedhate.
20. etat kāryam avaśyam me balāt api kariṣyasi
rājñaḥ hi pratikūlasthaḥ na jātu sukham edhate
20. etat kāryam me avaśyam balāt api kariṣyasi hi
rājñaḥ pratikūlasthaḥ jātu na sukham edhate
20. You will certainly accomplish this task for me, even by force. Indeed, one who opposes the king never prospers happily.
आसाद्य तं जीवितसंशयस्ते मृत्युर्ध्रुवो ह्यद्य मया विरुध्य ।
एतद् यथावत् परिगृह्य बुद्ध्या यदत्र पथ्यं कुरु तत्तथा त्वम् ॥२१॥
21. āsādya taṃ jīvitasaṃśayaste mṛtyurdhruvo hyadya mayā virudhya ,
etad yathāvat parigṛhya buddhyā yadatra pathyaṃ kuru tattathā tvam.
21. āsādya tam jīvitasaṃśayaḥ te mṛtyuḥ
dhruvaḥ hi adya mayā virudhya
etat yathāvat parigṛhya buddhyā
yat atra pathyam kuru tat tathā tvam
21. tam āsādya te jīvitasaṃśayaḥ mayā
virudhya hi adya mṛtyuḥ dhruvaḥ
tvam etat yathāvat buddhyā parigṛhya
atra yat pathyam tat tathā kuru
21. By confronting him, your life will be in doubt, and indeed, death is certain for you today by opposing me. Therefore, having properly grasped this with your intellect, you should do whatever is beneficial in this situation.
