ततो ऽब्रवीन्महातेजा रामो लक्ष्मणमग्रतः ।
स्थितं प्राग्गामिनं वीरं याचमानं कृताञ्जलिम् ॥१॥
1. tato'bravīnmahātejā rāmo lakṣmaṇamagrataḥ ,
sthitaṃ prāggāminaṃ vīraṃ yācamānaṃ kṛtāñjalim.

1. Then, the greatly resplendent Rāma spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, the hero who was standing in front, leading the way, and respectfully imploring him with folded hands.
मयाद्य सह सौमित्रे त्वयि गच्छति तद्वनम् ।
को भरिष्यति कौसल्यां सुमित्रां वा यशस्विनीम् ॥२॥
2. mayādya saha saumitre tvayi gacchati tadvanam ,
ko bhariṣyati kausalyāṃ sumitrāṃ vā yaśasvinīm.
2. mayā adya saha saumitre tvayi gacchati tat vanam
kaḥ bhariṣyati kausalyām sumitrām vā yaśasvinīm
2. saumitre mayā adya saha tvayi tat vanam gacchati
kaḥ kausalyām vā yaśasvinīm sumitrām bhariṣyati
2. O son of Sumitrā, when you go to that forest with me today, who will support Kausalyā or the glorious Sumitrā?
अभिवर्षति कामैर्यः पर्जन्यः पृथिवीमिव ।
स कामपाशपर्यस्तो महातेजा महीपतिः ॥३॥
3. abhivarṣati kāmairyaḥ parjanyaḥ pṛthivīmiva ,
sa kāmapāśaparyasto mahātejā mahīpatiḥ.
3. abhivarṣati kāmaiḥ yaḥ parjanyaḥ pṛthivīm
iva saḥ kāmapāśaparyastaḥ mahātejāḥ mahīpatiḥ
3. yaḥ parjanyaḥ pṛthivīm iva kāmaiḥ abhivarṣati
saḥ mahātejāḥ mahīpatiḥ kāmapāśaparyastaḥ
3. He, the king, who showers (his people) with desires (kāma) like rain on the earth, that greatly resplendent one is (now) entangled in the snares of desire (kāma).
सा हि राज्यमिदं प्राप्य नृपस्याश्वपतेः सुता ।
दुःखितानां सपत्नीनां न करिष्यति शोभनम् ॥४॥
4. sā hi rājyamidaṃ prāpya nṛpasyāśvapateḥ sutā ,
duḥkhitānāṃ sapatnīnāṃ na kariṣyati śobhanam.
4. sā hi rājyam idam prāpya nṛpasya aśvapateḥ sutā
duḥkhitānām sapatnīnām na kariṣyati śobhanam
4. sā nṛpasya aśvapateḥ sutā hi idam rājyam prāpya
duḥkhitānām sapatnīnām śobhanam na kariṣyati
4. For indeed, that daughter of King Aśvapati (Kaikeyī), having obtained this kingdom, will not do good for her distressed co-wives.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्मणः श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ।
प्रत्युवाच तदा रामं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम् ॥५॥
5. evamuktastu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ ślakṣṇayā girā ,
pratyuvāca tadā rāmaṃ vākyajño vākyakovidam.
5. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ ślakṣṇayā girā
prati uvāca tadā rāmam vākyajñaḥ vākyakovidam
5. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu vākyajñaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ tadā
ślakṣṇayā girā vākyakovidam rāmam prati uvāca
5. Thus addressed by Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, a knower of speech, then replied with gentle words to Rāma, who was an expert in words.
तवैव तेजसा वीर भरतः पूजयिष्यति ।
कौसल्यां च सुमित्रां च प्रयतो नात्र संशयः ॥६॥
6. tavaiva tejasā vīra bharataḥ pūjayiṣyati ,
kausalyāṃ ca sumitrāṃ ca prayato nātra saṃśayaḥ.
6. tava eva tejasā vīra bharataḥ pūjayiṣyati
kausalyām ca sumitrām ca prayataḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ
6. vīra tava eva tejasā bharataḥ prayataḥ kausalyām
ca sumitrām ca pūjayiṣyati atra saṃśayaḥ na
6. O hero, Bharata, being dutiful, will surely honor Kausalya and Sumitra by your very prowess. There is no doubt about this.
कौसल्या बिभृयादार्या सहस्रमपि मद्विधान् ।
यस्याः सहस्रं ग्रामाणां संप्राप्तमुपजीवनम् ॥७॥
7. kausalyā bibhṛyādāryā sahasramapi madvidhān ,
yasyāḥ sahasraṃ grāmāṇāṃ saṃprāptamupajīvanam.
7. kausalyā bibhṛyāt āryā sahasram api madvidhān
yasyāḥ sahasram grāmāṇām samprāptam upajīvanam
7. āryā kausalyā madvidhān sahasram api bibhṛyāt
yasyāḥ grāmāṇām sahasram upajīvanam samprāptam
7. Noble Kausalya could maintain even a thousand people like me, considering that a thousand villages have been obtained as her means of livelihood.
धनुरादाय सशरं खनित्रपिटकाधरः ।
अग्रतस्ते गमिष्यामि पन्थानमनुदर्शयन् ॥८॥
8. dhanurādāya saśaraṃ khanitrapiṭakādharaḥ ,
agrataste gamiṣyāmi panthānamanudarśayan.
8. dhanuḥ ādāya saśaram khanitrapaṭakādharaḥ
agrataḥ te gamiṣyāmi panthānam anudarśayan
8. saśaram dhanuḥ ādāya khanitrapaṭakādharaḥ
te agrataḥ panthānam anudarśayan gamiṣyāmi
8. I will go ahead of you, carrying a bow with arrows and bearing a spade and a basket, while showing the way.
आहरिष्यामि ते नित्यं मूलानि च फलानि च ।
वन्यानि यानि चान्यानि स्वाहाराणि तपस्विनाम् ॥९॥
9. āhariṣyāmi te nityaṃ mūlāni ca phalāni ca ,
vanyāni yāni cānyāni svāhārāṇi tapasvinām.
9. āhariṣyāmi te nityam mūlāni ca phalāni ca
vanyāni yāni ca anyāni svāhārāṇi tapasvinām
9. te nityam mūlāni ca phalāni ca yāni ca anyāni
vanyāni tapasvinām svāhārāṇi (santi) āhariṣyāmi
9. I will always bring you roots, fruits, and other wild provisions that are suitable foods for ascetics who practice spiritual austerities (tapas).
भवांस्तु सह वैदेह्या गिरिसानुषु रंस्यते ।
अहं सर्वं करिष्यामि जाग्रतः स्वपतश्च ते ॥१०॥
10. bhavāṃstu saha vaidehyā girisānuṣu raṃsyate ,
ahaṃ sarvaṃ kariṣyāmi jāgrataḥ svapataśca te.
10. bhavān tu saha vaidehyā giri-sānuṣu raṃsyate |
aham sarvam kariṣyāmi jāgrataḥ svapataḥ ca te
10. bhavān tu vaidehyā saha giri-sānuṣu raṃsyate
aham te jāgrataḥ svapataḥ ca sarvam kariṣyāmi
10. But you, along with Vaidehī (Sītā), will enjoy yourselves on the mountain slopes. I will attend to all your needs, whether you are awake or asleep.
रामस्त्वनेन वाक्येन सुप्रीतः प्रत्युवाच तम् ।
व्रजापृच्छस्व सौमित्रे सर्वमेव सुहृज्जनम् ॥११॥
11. rāmastvanena vākyena suprītaḥ pratyuvāca tam ,
vrajāpṛcchasva saumitre sarvameva suhṛjjanam.
11. rāmaḥ tu anena vākyena suprītaḥ pratyuvāca tam |
vraja āpṛcchasva saumitre sarvam eva suhṛt-janam
11. rāmaḥ tu anena vākyena suprītaḥ tam pratyuvāca
saumitre vraja sarvam eva suhṛt-janam āpṛcchasva
11. Rāma, exceedingly pleased by these words, replied to him: 'Sāumitra, go and bid farewell to all your dear ones.'
ये च राज्ञो ददौ दिव्ये महात्मा वरुणः स्वयम् ।
जनकस्य महायज्ञे धनुषी रौद्रदर्शने ॥१२॥
12. ye ca rājño dadau divye mahātmā varuṇaḥ svayam ,
janakasya mahāyajñe dhanuṣī raudradarśane.
12. ye ca rājñaḥ dadau divye mahā-ātmā varuṇaḥ svayam
| janakasya mahā-yajñe dhanuṣī raudra-darśane
12. ca ye divye raudra-darśane dhanuṣī varuṇaḥ
mahā-ātmā svayam janakasya mahā-yajñe rājñaḥ dadau
12. And those two divine, fearsome-looking bows, which the great-souled (mahātman) Varuṇa himself had given to the king during Janaka's great ritual (yajña).
अभेद्यकवचे दिव्ये तूणी चाक्षयसायकौ ।
आदित्यविमलौ चोभौ खड्गौ हेमपरिष्कृतौ ॥१३॥
13. abhedyakavace divye tūṇī cākṣayasāyakau ,
ādityavimalau cobhau khaḍgau hemapariṣkṛtau.
13. abhedya-kavace divye tūṇī ca akṣaya-sāyakau |
āditya-vimalau ca ubhau khaḍgau hema-pariṣkṛtau
13. ca divye abhedya-kavace ca akṣaya-sāyakau tūṇī
ca ubhau āditya-vimalau hema-pariṣkṛtau khaḍgau
13. Also, two divine, impenetrable armors, two quivers with inexhaustible arrows, and two swords, as pure as the sun and adorned with gold.
सत्कृत्य निहितं सर्वमेतदाचार्यसद्मनि ।
स त्वमायुधमादाय क्षिप्रमाव्रज लक्ष्मण ॥१४॥
14. satkṛtya nihitaṃ sarvametadācāryasadmani ,
sa tvamāyudhamādāya kṣipramāvraja lakṣmaṇa.
14. satskṛtya nihitam sarvam etat ācāryasadmani
saḥ tvam āyudham ādāya kṣipram āvraja lakṣmaṇa
14. lakṣmaṇa saḥ tvam āyudham ādāya kṣipram āvraja
etat sarvam ācāryasadmani satskṛtya nihitam
14. All this (equipment) has been respectfully deposited in the teacher's (guru) house. Therefore, Lakshmana, you should quickly take up those weapons and come.
स सुहृज्जनमामन्त्र्य वनवासाय निश्चितः ।
इक्ष्वाकुगुरुमामन्त्र्य जग्राहायुधमुत्तमम् ॥१५॥
15. sa suhṛjjanamāmantrya vanavāsāya niścitaḥ ,
ikṣvākugurumāmantrya jagrāhāyudhamuttamam.
15. saḥ suhṛj-janam āmantrya vanavāsāya niścitaḥ
ikṣvāku-gurum āmantrya jagrāha āyudham uttamam
15. saḥ vanavāsāya niścitaḥ suhṛj-janam āmantrya
ikṣvāku-gurum āmantrya uttamam āyudham jagrāha
15. He, resolved upon dwelling in the forest (vanavāsa), having bid farewell to his friends and to the spiritual teacher (guru) of the Ikshvaku (Ikṣvāku) lineage, took up the excellent weapon.
तद्दिव्यं राजशार्दूलः सत्कृतं माल्यभूषितम् ।
रामाय दर्शयामास सौमित्रिः सर्वमायुधम् ॥१६॥
16. taddivyaṃ rājaśārdūlaḥ satkṛtaṃ mālyabhūṣitam ,
rāmāya darśayāmāsa saumitriḥ sarvamāyudham.
16. tat divyam rājaśārdūlaḥ satkṛtam mālyabhūṣitam
rāmāya darśayāmāsa saumitriḥ sarvam āyudham
16. saumitriḥ rājaśārdūlaḥ tat divyam satkṛtam
mālyabhūṣitam sarvam āyudham rāmāya darśayāmāsa
16. Saumitri (Saumitriḥ), that tiger among kings, showed all those divine weapons, which were consecrated and adorned with garlands, to Rama (Rāma).
तमुवाचात्मवान् रामः प्रीत्या लक्ष्मणमागतम् ।
काले त्वमागतः सौम्य काङ्क्षिते मम लक्ष्मण ॥१७॥
17. tamuvācātmavān rāmaḥ prītyā lakṣmaṇamāgatam ,
kāle tvamāgataḥ saumya kāṅkṣite mama lakṣmaṇa.
17. tam uvāca ātmavān rāmaḥ prītyā lakṣmaṇam āgatam
kāle tvam āgataḥ saumya kāṅkṣite mama lakṣmaṇa
17. ātmavān rāmaḥ prītyā āgatam lakṣmaṇam tam uvāca
sauṃya lakṣmaṇa tvam mama kāṅkṣite kāle āgataḥ
17. Self-possessed (ātmavān) Rama (Rāma) lovingly addressed Lakshmana (Lakṣmaṇa), who had arrived, saying: 'You have come at the perfect and desired time, O gentle Lakshmana (Lakṣmaṇa)!'
अहं प्रदातुमिच्छामि यदिदं मामकं धनम् ।
ब्राह्मणेभ्यस्तपस्विभ्यस्त्वया सह परंतप ॥१८॥
18. ahaṃ pradātumicchāmi yadidaṃ māmakaṃ dhanam ,
brāhmaṇebhyastapasvibhyastvayā saha paraṃtapa.
18. aham pradātum icchāmi yat idam māmakam dhanam
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ tapasvibhyaḥ tvayā saha paraṃtapa
18. tvayā saha aham māmakam idam dhanam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
tapasvibhyaḥ pradātum icchāmi paraṃtapa
18. O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), I wish to give this wealth of mine to Brahmins and ascetics, accompanied by you.
वसन्तीह दृढं भक्त्या गुरुषु द्विजसत्तमाः ।
तेषामपि च मे भूयः सर्वेषां चोपजीविनाम् ॥१९॥
19. vasantīha dṛḍhaṃ bhaktyā guruṣu dvijasattamāḥ ,
teṣāmapi ca me bhūyaḥ sarveṣāṃ copajīvinām.
19. vasanti iha dṛḍham bhaktyā guruṣu dvijasattamāḥ
teṣām api ca me bhūyaḥ sarveṣām ca upajīvinām
19. iha guruṣu dṛḍham bhaktyā dvijasattamāḥ vasanti
teṣām api ca me bhūyaḥ sarveṣām upajīvinām
19. Here, the best among the twice-born (dvijasattamāḥ) dwell with firm devotion (bhakti) towards their teachers (gurus). And also to them, and furthermore, to all my dependants.
वसिष्ठपुत्रं तु सुयज्ञमार्यं त्वमानयाशु प्रवरं द्विजानाम् ।
अभिप्रयास्यामि वनं समस्तानभ्यर्च्य शिष्टानपरान्द्विजातीन् ॥२०॥
20. vasiṣṭhaputraṃ tu suyajñamāryaṃ tvamānayāśu pravaraṃ dvijānām ,
abhiprayāsyāmi vanaṃ samastānabhyarcya śiṣṭānaparāndvijātīn.
20. vasiṣṭhaputram tu suyajñam āryam
tvam ānaya āśu pravaram dvijānām
abhiprayāsyāmi vanam samastān
abhyarcya śiṣṭān aparān dvijātīn
20. tvam āśu vasiṣṭhaputram āryam
dvijānām pravaram suyajñam ānaya
samastān śiṣṭān aparān dvijātīn
abhyarcya vanam abhiprayāsyāmi
20. Indeed, you quickly bring Suyajña, the noble son of Vasiṣṭha, who is the foremost among the twice-born. (Meanwhile,) after honoring all other remaining twice-born (dvijātīn) individuals, I will depart for the forest.
